Autumn Yearlings Bargainbuys

FRANCE hashad its turn, and soonitwill be time for the best of the yearling sales in Ireland and Britain to takecentrestage Whittlingdownthe top-notch catalogues for the Goffs Orbyand Tattersalls Book 1auctions into a shortish listoflots to note is easier said than done as thereare closerelations to bignames everywhereyou look

Personal preference, rather than unbiased assessment, would playa partindictatingwhich colts and fillies youmakeanote of,but surely an obvious one at the Orbyisthe brother to Luxembourg.

He mightnot be one of Aidan O’Brien’sabsolute top-notchersbut rare are horses who winaGroup 1at two, three, fourand five, and the sonofCamelot out of Attirebeing sold via The Castlebridge Consignmenta weekonTuesdayoughtto be popular

At Book 1, the sister to Alpinista would probably be installedasfavourite to top the sale, for all that sire Frankel is not blazingaway this year quiteashehas done in the lastfew years He is alreadyat100 Group winners, however, Lake Victoria’s victoryat Newmarketlastmonth seeingher sireintothe recordbooks as thequickest tothree figures, his 3,144 days duckingunder the time it took Danehill, DeepImpact,Galileoor Dubawi

Hurricane Lane’s brother should command plenty of attentiontoo. The dual Classic winner wassigned forbyGodolphin for 200,000gns and, while the family doesn’t scream speed, which alot of buyers arelooking for thesedays, it’s hard to arguewith a matingthat hasalready produceda three-time Group1winner, while dam Gale Forcealsohas Group2 winner SweetWilliam on her CV

Autumn Yearlings Interview

Lincoln Collins and Jacob West aretwo US-based agents crossing the Atlanticin search of abargain

IT IS nothing new for Europeancentred buyers to have battledfor the spoils at the biggest American yearlingsales, with Coolmoreand Darley interest shapingthe bloodstock landscapeand providingsome of its mostcaptivatingtales alongthe way.

Thereverse,ofStateside investorsarrivingtoperusethe offerings at the likes of Tattersalls and Goffs, isamore recentphenomenon. They have quickly become among the mostimportantvisitors at the Octoberand Orby auctions British-born but Kentucky-based agentLincoln Collins, who hasservedasthe NorthAmerican representative at Tattersalls for the last22 years, remembers the developmentwell.

“Therewas aperiod when the pound wasverystrong, which ledtomorehorses comingoverfromthe US to sell at Tattersalls,” he says “Jimmy George [marketing director] andI hadalwaysfelt that given the increasing amountofgrass racinginthe US that American buyers should be coming, too.

“Arguably the best grass pedigrees in the worldare in Britain, Ireland and France Foralongtime we were trying to getpeople to come to the sale in Newmarketbecause if we couldget enough to buy horses to demonstratethe validity of ourthoughts about howtheywould do in the US, then the US would become a strong market for Tattersalls

“ChadBrown wasthe first one to bite the bullet and come over, and he and othershave done extremely well since.” Collins pointstoBrown’s Newspaperofrecord, a 200,000gns Book1purchaseby KlaravichStables in 2017, and Aunt Pearl, whowas found for 280,000gns by LizCrowtwo years later and endedupwith Brad Cox, as twoofthe most obvious trendsettersgiven they both galloped to resounding gloryatthe Breeders’Cup not longafterwards.

“The main buyers to date have beenKlaravich,Peter Brantand variousother people who Mike Ryan and Chad Brownbuy for,but nowIthink the successofthe horses that come outofthe October sales inthe US hasreally piquedthe interestofAmerican buyers,” he says “I suspectwe’re goingtosee increasingnumbers as longas the exchange rate remains relatively favourable and the horses continue to be successful here.”

The€400,000 KingmancoltsignedbyJacob West (right, below) at last year’s Goffs Orby Sale; LincolnCollins(right) feelsthe exchange rateis favourable forUSbuyersatEuropeanauctions

‘The horses aren’t as expensiveastheyused to be –they’re good valu

Jacob West, another leading agentinAmerica, took on a similar role at Goffs in 2021 and hasmadeabig push to replicatesuchinterestatthe flagship OrbySale

He signedfor a€400,000 Kingmancolt lastyear on behalf of the flamboyant Mike Repole, while names such as Clay Scherer and KimValerio alsoboughtatbig six-figure sums

“Weall see what’s goingon and youlookatthe success Chad Brownhas hadoverthe years,” says West

“The horses on offer at Goffs are, as awhole, justavery good group. It really got started with Gatewood Bell beforeme, gettingAmericans to come over, and Ijustpickedup the ball and carried it from there.

“Once we getpeople over, theyfall in love with it.They lovethe horsesthat arethere and the Irish breeders get rewarded from the Americans that show up.”

West adds that atrip to Europe, perhaps taking

in some racingorvisiting studs, helps as apull factor in itself

“You’reseeing awhole new partofthe world, too,”he says.“We’restillworking a horse salelikewedoin Americabut you’remeeting new people, experiencing new things. That’s partofthe allurethat haspeople come over.”

Therewas another pivotal swing, from the wider world, that Collins believes must be factored in “Whatmadeitattractivein the firstplace wasaswitch over the last20years in the relative strength of the pound and the dollar,” he says

“The horsessimplyaren’tas expensiveastheyusedtobe, despite obviouslyhaving to go to theexpenseofbringing them back. They look likegood value, tothe extentthat you cancomparethem with similar horses in the US.”

Once shippedbackacross the Atlantic, ofcourse, they canbegin to recoup that outlay.

“You just have to look at the prize-moneythat’s on offer in Americawith the turf racing,” says West

“Takethe Kentucky Downs meetingwe’ve just had; itseemedlikeevery other daytheywererunninga seven-figure race there. That’s broughta lot of attentionand puteveryoneon notice that turf racingin Americahas beentaken to another level.”

Both agents areoptimistic that therewillbeplenty of American voices heardaround the salesgrounds on eachside of the Irish Seathis autumn once again.

Another successful Saratoga meetingfor Brownand Klaravich, includingTattersalls purchasesIdeaGeneration and McKulickfillingfirst and thirdinthe Grade 2Flower Bowl Stakes, shouldkeep interesttickingover.

“I’m hopeful there’ll be quite afew,”saysCollins

“I mightbemistaken butI think Chad hashad aGrade 1 winner from practically every

groupthat he’s boughtatthe OctoberSale, certainly lots of Graded stakes winners anyway

s d me s see ue

“I think by far the most successin Americafor European-bred horses hascom from Tattersalls and I’dliketosee some more people come to Book 2, because Ithink thereare alot of opportunities thereas well.

“Not everyone canaffordto buyatBook1and thereare very nicehorses in Book 2that arethe righttypefor America and probably representgood value, again compared to similar in the US.”

It is tooearlyinWest’sstint at Goffs to be able to see equivalentevidence on the track, buthebelieves there have beenencouraging signs.

“I think there’ll be some old faces, but some new faces too,” he says “The likes of Bo Bromagen and the Legion Bloodstock team have hadsomesuccess already. We’rewaitingonthat one real, true breakouthorse, butit’scoming.

“Every year Americans are spendingmoreand more, thereare moreand more horses comingout of Goffs backhere. It’s bound to happen sooner rather than later.”
