Derek O’Connor Straight to the Point

The season’s most thrilling finish – but I don’t want to relive it

I

’M IN no hurry to relive the experience, but if you haven’t seen the finish of the QuinnBet Hunters Chase at Naas on Saturday you should try to get a look at a replay. There were only two horses involved, but it was probably one of the most dramatic finishes of the season. My mount, the Emmet Mullins-trained Its On The Line, just hung on to win by a head from Billaway. You often hear of horses coming from an impossible position but this was something else. Billaway was the early leader under Patrick Mullins. Maxine O’Sullivan took over on Ramillies at the fourth and led until the ninth when I sent Its On The Line to the front. By the time Ramillies overtook me again at the 12th, Billaway had dropped away. Between the last two, it developed into a straight match between Maxine and me, and when we jumped the last I knew I was winning that battle. But I also knew I had to keep riding my fellow because he can be extremely idle without company. At the same time, he has a great will to win a battle. He senses horses around him, and on this occasion he kept finding just enough to hold off Billaway who made up a huge amount of ground from the last. This showed he can find reserves when needed, and he should be in perfect shape for Cheltenham, where he was second to Premier Magic last March. Emmet plans to put the cheekpieces back on for the St James’s Place, and that should be a help. Premier Magic has impressed in two outings in Britain since his return, and Billaway will be a serious opponent too. For a 12-year-old making his seasonal debut, Saturday’s run was very encouraging. If I hadn’t been riding the winner I would have been thrilled to see him take the race for the fifth year in a row. He has often needed a run in the past and this was probably a much better performance than when he beat weaker opposition 12 months ago. Let’s not forget David Christie’s Ferns Lock, who has won in brilliant style at Thurles since finishing second to Its On The Line at Down Royal’s Christmas meeting. He’s the same age as Emmet’s horse, and I’m sure he’s going to be a major contender at Cheltenham.

Saturday’s Naas card also featured a good win for the Terence O’Brientrained Answer To Kayf, who started his career with a second placing in a maiden at Knockanard in the autumn campaign of 2022. He recorded his second win over hurdles by beating the Willie Mullinstrained favourite in the Red Mills Auction Novice Hurdle. He’s a halfbrother to You Wear It Well who won the Jack de Bromhead Mares’ Novice Hurdle at last year’s Cheltenham Festival and could travel next month with a choice of the Albert Bartlett or the Martin Pipe. The final of the Red Mills series at Punchestown is a

potential target for him also. Saturday’s card ended with a bumper win for Kap De Triomphe, trained by Pat Doyle who has few equals in his ability to produce talented young horses for the pointto-point field. He’s no stranger to bumper success either. In 2012 he finished first in the big point-to-point bumper at Fairyhouse with Rogue Angel (demoted to second), who went on to win the Irish Grand National for Mouse Morris. More recently he won a bumper at Thurles with Flame Bearer, who was a Grade 1 novice chase winner for Willie Mullins last season after winning two Grade 2 events and finishing second to State Man in a Grade 1 during his novice hurdling season with Pat at Holycross.

Pat is enjoying a good campaign in points. He brought his score to eight for the season with a double at the Scarteen meeting at Comea. Pa King, who was on the bumper winner on Saturday, partnered the Mahler gelding Youdecide to win the fouryear-old maiden from the only other finisher. Later on, Pat’s daughter Susie extended her lead in the race for the lady riders’ title when riding Cicero Grimes to a maiden win. She is now on the seven-winner mark, four ahead of Hannah Phillips. The other weekend four-year-old maidens went to Wexford stables. Mick Goff was on the mark at Kirkistown on Saturday with the French-bred Karma Police, and Ellen Doyle struck at Tallow with Idaho Valley, ridden by Brian Dunleavy. He’s a nice type for the sales and just got the better of my mount Dont Tell Jack, an Ellmarie Holden-trained gelding who should also have a good

future. We finished a long way ahead of the remainder. I was delighted that David Russell, a youngster from Tipperary town, had his first point-to-point winner at Comea. He rode the Enda Bolgertrained Albaquirky, a possible Ladies’ Cup contender for his Kildare-based owner-breeder Charles O’Reilly, in a maiden for older horses. David is gaining great experience with Enda, and he comes to me once a week to help out. He’s a good lad and I’m sure it’s the first of many winners for him. Finally this week, it was also great to hear that Richard Pugh has been appointed to an important new role with Horse Racing Ireland. He’s a massive supporter of pointto-point racing and a great communicator, always willing to listen as well as come up with ideas. He’s deeply committed to the sport, knows every aspect of the industry, and has always acted in the best interest of qualified riders.

IN FOCUS Pat Doyle on the maiden victory of Lady Mags and the highs and lows of ownership

I

T WAS great to see Lady Mags win her maiden so well at Ballinaboola two weekends ago as it was her first run in a year. We ran her in Tinahely last year and she hated the ground going down the hill. She was a bit jarred up so I decided I wasn’t going to run her again until she had a bit of cut in the ground. Despite it being a year since her last outing I was hopeful of a big run, but I didn’t declare that, I kept it to myself. You’re never sure when you are going to the races; there’s always one there to beat you, but at the same time, I knew that the one that was going to beat me would have known she was in a race the way that my mare had been working at home. The way the race went played into our hands. They didn’t go a good gallop on the first circuit, which was ideal as I had only loose-schooled her recently. The last time I had taken her away to school was October or November, so that helped her warm up into the race. Almost all of mine are homebred, and Lady Mags traces back to the horse who I started it all with, her granddam The Parson’s Line. I used to be involved in the showing business with a friend of mine when we used to show horses in hand. We had five Dublin winners and when I was up at the sales one day my friend was with me and he made me buy The Parson’s Line. She was a mare by The Parson, and that’s how the ‘disease’ started. It was 30 years ago, and it has become a

NEWS AND VIEWS TEESHAN, one of the stars of the 2023 autumn term, came through his first test under rules with flying colours last Sunday, when he won the bumper at Exeter on his first outing for his new trainer Paul Nicholls. The son of Westerner started his career under the care of Ger Quinn and Philip McBurney, for whom he took apart an 1 1 - r u n n e r f o u r- y e a r- o l d maiden at Loughanmore last October in a style that is rarely seen. Coincidentally, four hours before his rules debut, the form of his Loughanmore perform ance was boosted with the success at Comea of Boyles Hill, the horse who had trailed in 41 lengths adrift of him at the Antrim venue four months earlier. After his Loughanmore display, the five-year-old was

very expensive hobby! I do it for the buzz, not for any money I would get out of it but, naturally, you like to win. I have three broodmares at the moment – Tilly’s Delight, Lady Mangan and Mangan Sue – and all three of them won point-to-points for me. Unfortunately, you have some bad luck along the way, but you have to take the good with the bad. Lady Mangan won her

maiden in Tinahely and went on to win a mares’ open at Lisronagh in 2020 when she beat the previous year’s champion mare Longhouse Music. I got so fond of her that when we came home after her win in Lisronagh I fed her too many nuts and, unfortunately, she got colic the next morning. I had to bring her to the equine hospital in Kildare and they were able to save her.

She is a great staying horse, so with a bit of luck I’m hoping she might breed a good one – we’ll dream about that anyway. Tilly’s Delight won a fouryear-old maiden for me at Boulta in 2015. Unfortunately, she was brought down in a maiden hurdle after that and injured her pelvis. I could never get her back to the form that she was in and when they X-rayed her they found a hairline fracture of her pelvis.

Mangan Sue is my other broodmare and she won twice for me until we had some bad luck. We ran her in Tramore, and she picked up a screw in the stable that went up into the sole of her foot. Although she finished third, she ended up with a ‘leg’. They tell me she was a good one; she had finished second in a maiden hurdle at Wexford after winning at Borris House and Bartlemy.

Stunning points winner Teeshan passes first rules test for Nicholls already a 14-1 shot for the Grade 1 Champion Bumper at the Cheltenham Festival, a price that was cut further following his seven-length victory at Exeter, leaving him 7-1 joint-third favour ite behind fellow pointing export Jalon D’Oudairies.

Thriller helps shape hunter chase division

The pecking order in the Irish hunter chase division before the big spring festivals often becomes clearer after the QuinnBet Hunter Chase at Na a s , w h i c h s e r v e d u p a

thrilling finish last weekend. There was no shortage of depth to the race, with four of the seven runners having won an open lightweight this season, alongside the former champion hunter chaser Billaway, who was attempting to win the race for a fifth year in succession. In spite of a gallant effort to retain his crown, Billaway was d e t h ro n e d b y t h e E m m e t Mullins-trained Its On The Line, who followed up wins at Da m ma Hou s e a n d D ow n Royal to remain unbeaten for the campaign as he prepares to

go one better than his second in last year’s festival hunter chase. With Ferns Lock and Its On The Line filling the top positions in the Cheltenham ante-post market, there is a strong look to the race for challengers from this side of the Irish Sea, although the British picture will begin to take shape from this Saturday when Haydock hosts the Walrus hunter chase. Next week, the British handicapper will publish the weights for the 2024 Grand National, and it will be interesting to see what mark he allocates to Its

On The Line, who is an intriguing entry at Aintree. Although that will be irrelevant should he run in the Cheltenham Festival hunter chase, it will be interesting to see how the handicapper weighs the current hunter chase form against the form of horses in open handicap chases and Graded contests.

Victor Tango continues Kelly’s breeding success

Victory in the older maiden at Kirkistown for Victor Tango had great significance for his handler, Noel Kelly, as the

I suppose when you are into horses, that is what happens, you have the ups and the downs. She is sound as a bell now, thankfully, and is in foal to Workforce, so it’s not all too bad. I do a lot of the work myself here, where I train on Bert Allen’s track in Newtown. I had a friend, Ger Murphy, who used to ride out with me, but unfortunately, he passed away from cancer. I was the main Peugeot dealer for North Wexford. We are now the main dealer for MG, and we also sell for Subaru. It’s a family business. My father started it in 1950, and I took it over in 1964, so hopefully, it will continue another bit longer. I have two sons who are in the motor business and we are building a new showroom for MG in Enniscorthy. I have retired now, really, and I’m taking a bit of a back seat to the boys. It gives me the time for the horses and, hopefully, we’ll have a good season. I have a gelding, Sir Ollie, who was coughing for four weeks after he ran in Dromahane at Christmas. I hope he will do something for me when I get him back on track on some nicer ground, and I have a mare by September Storm that I like. Lady Mags came home flying from Ballinaboola. She went out into the field the next day bucking and leaping off the ground, not a bother on her. I could nearly have run her again last Sunday if I had wanted to; she had come out of it in great form. I hope to run her at Knockanard. It’s the only mares’ winner-of-one coming up,and I’m told it’s a good, tough track, which is what she likes. I’m no expert in the job, I’m just hoping it will go right. PAT DOYLE WAS TALKING TO EOGHAIN WARD

Eoghain Ward seven-year-old is the latest offspring of Charlie’s Vic to hit the track. She was an early flagbearer for Kelly’s Draperstown stable, w i n n i n g a f o u r- y e a r- o l d maiden at Necarne on her debut in 2011 under Jamie Codd, before progressing to win five times on the track, including in the 2013 Dawn Run Mares’ Novice Chase at Limerick. T h a t w a s Ke l l y ’s b re a kthrough first victory at Graded level and since being retired to the paddocks she has already p ro d u c e d a f o u r- y e a r- o l d maiden winner in Comes Recommended who, like Victor Tango, is a son of Ocovango. He won at Monksgrange in 2020. On the evidence of Victor Tango’s own pointing success on Saturday, he looks set to continue the stable’s successful association with the pedigree.

WEEKEND REPORTS

NORTH DOWN AT KIRKISTOWN SATURDAY

Gorthill continues McCaldin’s hot form CAROLINE McC ALDIN’S string has returned from the northern region’s mid-season break in flying form as Gorthill showed in the James Murdoch Contracts open. A third winner for the Dromara handler from two fixtures in the region in 2024, the French-bred had not been seen since being beaten 44 lengths on his hurdling debut at Perth in June, but the lightly raced eight-year-old made an immediate impact on his first step into open company. Noel McParlan struck the front along the back straight on the Rail Link gelding, who soon had victory wrapped up to return ten lengths clear of the recent Tyrella runner-up Jay Bee Why. “He’s been a very fun horse and a great addition to the yard,” McCaldin said. “He has progressed through the ranks and will contest another open in a couple of weeks.” As comfortable as that success was, McParlan had

Winning handler Ger Quinn was delighted with the performance, suggesting she had shown great improvement this season and was likely to contest another mares’ winners’ contest in the coming weeks. Declan Laver y will have gained great satisfaction from

“It’s Hard To Know is a lovely model. We always liked his work and the plan now is to head to the sales,” handler Patrick Turley said. Fellow Downpatrick handler Brian Hamilton snr, who has taken over the licence of his

“ It ’s a l w a y s n i c e t o g e t another winner for Aidan and Susan Archdeacon as they’re a pleasure to train for,” Gleeson said. “He’s a grand horse who’s been running away very nicely this season. He was runner-up in a maiden hunter chase in Cork last Easter and that’s probably where we will go with him again now.” Gleeson was mob-handed in his bid to win back-to-back

It was Wait At The Gate who fared best of his trio in fourth, but he was no match for Cicero Grimes and D’Jo Dela Barriere, who served up a thrilling finish. The latter was a short-priced favourite having finished third to the subsequent Grade 2 winner Loughglynn in a Punchestown maiden hurdle i n Nov e m b e r, b u t h e w a s outbattled by Cicero Grimes, whose narrow victory was a seventh of the campaign for Susie Doyle. There was even more drama in the following Ryan Cusack Memorial, Conack Construction and Tattersalls NH fiveyear-old geldings’ maiden as the complexion of the race changed completely with the final-fence fall of the strongtravelling Dixie Mafia. His nearest pursuer

Powerofjet also came to grief in an independent fall at the fence, and although Line Em Up was left in front, he was collared on the run-in by the fast-finishing Boyles Hill. Sophie Gold failed to complete in last year’s Gain mares’ final but a second tilt at the valuable prize at Ballynoe is on the cards for the sevenyear-old after she bounced back to form in the Gain Equine Nutr ition mares’ maiden. Fifth on her first start in ten months at Turtulla four weeks earlier, Mikey O ’Connor ’s daughter of Multiplex proved a cut above her eight rivals as she accounted for the Tyrella-third Nellies Magic by five lengths. Track recruit Albaquirky

supplied 20-year-old David Russell with a moment he won’t forget when he rode his first winner in the Alpha Automation and Controls older geldings’ maiden. To make the victory all the sweeter, the fixture is at his local venue and Russell gave his Enda Bolger-trained mount a big pat down the neck after he carried him home one and a half lengths in front of The Last Minute. “It’s brilliant to get my first winner at my local point-topoint track,” Russell said. “Enda has been brilliant to me over the last couple of seasons, giving me loads of spins. “He’s a great man to work for. I’ve learned so much from him and I can’t thank him enough.”

Lonesome Boatman, who finished second for former handler Martin Brassil in a Galway festival maiden hurdle in July 2021, was having his first start in open grade having won a Lingstown maiden on his previous outing in November. Gaspard Du Seuil led from four out and still appeared the most likely winner approaching the final fence. However, he lost momentum after a mistake as Lonesome Boatman swept past on the flat to score by a widening five and a half lengths.
