BLOODSTOCK SPECIAL BREEDING ON A BUDGET

O

UR previous supplement, New Sires for 2020, featured on the cover freshmen who will be standing their debut seasons for £50,000 (Too Darn Hot) and €45,000 (Blue Point). That illustrious pair are out of reach for those mare owners lacking deep pockets and beyond the scope of our focus here, which is on those who stand in what we consider to be the budget bracket of £10,000/€12,500 or under. Crystal Ocean, incidentally, was the third star performer to grace the cover of our supplement a fortnight ago, and while he is, somewhat sadly, aimed at the jumps sector, it is to be hoped and encouraged that Flat breeders don’t put a line through him. At €8,000, and with his best efforts having come over a mile and a quarter or a mile and a half, he is not a ‘commercial’ stallion but is surely a viable ‘budget’ option. In these pages you’ll find plenty of them. First up, Martin Stevens highlights some shining examples from the last 12 months of how a ‘cheap’ covering can work out brilliantly. He then makes insightful use of our statistics that reveal the percentage of a sire’s progeny in Britain and Ireland with Racing Post Ratings of at least 80, 100 or 115, producing a fascinating and thoughtprovoking analysis focused on those at the budget end of the stallion ranks. Following on from our picking the brains of a nap hand of bloodstock jurors in a bid to unearth some pearls of wisdom, James Thomas ramps up the pace from page 9 with a hurtle through some of the options for breeders in Britain and Ireland at £10,000/€12,500 or under. James takes care of five of the six sections of our in-depth directory, identifying some star value picks on the way, with Tom Peacock taking on the baton for the established/ veteran stallions of 2020. Breeding is not an exact science – and, let’s face it, where would the fun in that be? – and there is no huge reason why the next big thing could not spring from a £5,000 cover. Have faith in your convictions, stock, and opinion as to physique, pedigree and race-record matching suitability, and even at the Less Darn Hot end of the business you may just end up with your mare in the news and on a big-spender’s wishlist. 3yo ch c Footstepsinthesand - Colomone Cross (Xaar) Jaws dropped when Mums Tipple cruised to an 11-length success in the Goffs UK Premier Yearling Stakes last August and he was reportedly subject of big money offers afterwards. Owners Marian Lyons and Patricia Zanelli chose to keep hold of their prized asset, though, and he showed some class when seventh, beaten under five lengths, in the Middle Park Stakes. The Abbey Bloodstock-bred colt is by Coolmore’s stalwart

budget option Footstepsinthesand, the source of 59 stakes winners and available for €10,000 from 2010 to 2019. After one of the best seasons yet for the son of Giant’s Causeway, in which he also delivered Gimcrack and Champagne Stakes scorer Threat, his price has been pushed up to €15,000.

Safe Voyage Mums Tipple

8yo b g Tagula - Come April (Singspiel) Henry Candy’s popular sprinter, a dual Group 1 winner in his heyday, showed he retained some of his sparkle at the age of seven last year by winning the Criterion Stakes and running second in the Challenge Stakes. With 13 wins and seven other podium finishes to his name he now boasts just shy of £1.4 million in prize-money. Not bad considering he was bred by Seamus Phelan by sending his Singspiel mare Come April, bought for buttons, to value sire Tagula, who is about to embark on his 24th covering season at Rathbarry Stud at a fee of €4,000.

7yo b g Fast Company -Shishangaan (Mujadil) Fast Company has a fabulous flag bearer in Safe Voyage, who won the John of Gaunt

Stakes and finished placed in the Minstrel, Hungerford and Queen Elizabeth II Stakes last year at the age of six. The John Quinn-trained gelding was bred by Adolf Schneider, who paid just €5,000 for the nomination when his sire stood at Rathasker Stud. Fast Company switched to Kildangan Stud in 2017, where he is available at a fee of €12,000, and with his first more expensively bred two-year-olds set to run in 2020 it could very well be a big year ahead for him.

Safe Voyage

Oxted

4yo b g Mayson - Charlotte Rosina (Choisir) Oxted looks a sprinter to follow in 2020 after finishing second to Khaadem in the Carnarvon Stakes and winning the Portland Handicap off a mark of 105 for Roger Teal last year. The four-year-old gelding was bred by Homecroft Wealth Racing by sending their Choisir mare Charlotte Rosina to July Cup winner Mayson when he stood at Cheveley Park Stud at £6,000. Mayson has supplied 20 black-type performers from his first four crops and is even better value in 2020, as his fee has been clipped to £5,000.

Pierre Lapin

3yo b c Cappella Sansevero - Beatrix Potter (Cadeaux Genereux) Paul McCartan is a true hero for budget breeders having bought back Beatrix Potter, a daughter of Cadeaux Genereux he bred and sold as a yearling for €120,000, inexpensively in a private deal. He sent the mare to Dark Angel when he stood at Yeomanstown Stud for €12,500 to produce sprint ace Harry Angel and to Cappella Sansevero in his first season when he stood at €4,500 to produce last year’s unbeaten Mill Reef Stakes winner Pierre Lapin. Beatrix Potter was then sold to the China Horse Club for big money. Pierre Lapin is a fine advertisement for Cappella Sansevero, whose small first crop also produced the promising novice/maiden stakes winners Eloy D’Amerval and Panic Room. The son of Showcasing is standing at Starfield Stud at a fee of €7,000 in 2020.

Living In The Past

3yo b f Bungle Inthejungle - Ayr Missile (Cadeaux Genereux) The Karl Burke-trained Lowther Stakes winner, bred by Newlands House Stud, was the highlight of the second crop of Rathasker Stud’s up-and-coming sire Bungle Inthejungle, a dual Group 3-winning son of Exceed And Excel. Bungle Inthejungle’s first crop produced Molecomb Stakes scorer and Middle Park Stakes third Rumble Inthejungle among a slew of winners and he consequently covered a bigger book of 109 mares last year. That means breeders who use Bungle Inthejungle at €12,000 this season will have a yearling to sell in the year the sire has his better-bred two-year-olds running for him.

A’Ali

3yo b c Society Rock - Motion La ass (Motivator) Society Rock looks a serious loss to commercial breeders, his three seaso ons standing at Tally-Ho Stud at fees betw ween €6,000 and €8,000 having yielded 13 blacktype horses including stars Unfortunately and The Mackem Bulllet. A’Ali, from Society Rock’s final cro op and bred by Tally-Ho Stud, was onee of the leading two-year-old sprinterrs of 2019, winning the Norfolk Stakess, Prix Robert Papin and Flying Childers Stakes. Although Society Rock is no longer around, Unfortunately is carrying the flame for his sire line and the Prix Morny winner stands his second season at Springgfield House Stud at a fee of €5,500 this year. y

Gustavu us Weston

4yo br g Equia ano - Chrissycross (Cape Cross) Gustavus Westo on exemplifies the dream of all small breeders as he was w bred by Micheal Orlandi and John Harrod byy sending their cheaply bought Cape Cross mare Chrrissycross to Equiano when he stood at Newsells Parrk Stud at £8,000. The gelding w went on to win the Group 3 Phoenix Sprint Stakes for Joe Murphy and Ch hrissycross was subsequen ntly sold at the recent Tattersalls December Marres’ Sale for 95,000gns. Gustavus Weston is one o of 17 stakes scorers, along with top-level winners Belvoirr Bay and The Tin n Man, for Equiano, who iss priced at £6,0000 this year.

OR a simple guide to the quality a sire is imparting to his stock, it is hard to beat the tables the Racing Post website hosts in its statistics section that order names by the percentage of their progeny in Britain and Ireland rated at least 80, 100 or 115. Unlike those tables that order sires by progeny earnings, which can be skewed by a handful of valuable races, or number of winners, which can be achieved with huge volumes of runners and therefore low strike-rates, these take into account both achievement and opportunity. In a recent article in this paper, I highlighted the nine sires who had half or more of their runners achieve a Racing Post Rating of 80 – around the mark needed to win a maiden of fair quality and where resale value kicks in – or higher in 2019. In some respects it made for a sobering lesson that you get what you pay for, as the leaders in this field included Frankel (stud fee: £175,000), Dubawi (£250,000), Galileo (private but astronomical), Sea The Stars (€150,000) and Kingman (£150,000), while the table-topper Scat Daddy was due to stand at $100,000 when he died suddenly before he was able to cover his most expensive book. However, there were glimmers of hope for smaller breeders in the list, though. Fourth-placed Declaration Of War was advertised at $25,000 before he was transferred to Japan, while seventh-placed Night Of Thunder had fallen to £15,000 in the two seasons before he had runners but is now up to €25,000 after excelling in his freshman season, and the limited spaces in his book are being fought

over by the leading operations. The other sire among the nine, Lane’s End Farm resident Noble Mission, could reward those with less budget but willing to have mares covered in Kentucky as he commanded a fee of just $15,000 in 2019 and is up to a still affordable $20,000 for 2020. You have to scroll down further through the table to find those sires who are active in Britain and Ireland and stand at a budget price this season – £10,000/€12,000 or less – but there are a dozen who managed strike-rates of between 40 and 25 per cent runners rated 80 or more last year, meaning they may be good value for breeders operating on a shoestring. Charm Spirit, the threetime Group 1 winner by Invincible Spirit who had Night Of Thunder behind when he triumphed in the Queen Elizabeth II Stakes, came out best in this subset with that mark of 40 per cent. He has been represented by two full crops of racing age in Europe, the first conceived at Tweenhills in Gloucestershire and the second at Haras de Bonneval in Normandy, and it is fair to say he has so far lacked a superstar to put his

name in lights – hence his fee has dropped from an opening mark of £25,000 to £8,500. But there are grounds for thinking he is worth a punt at that price. Clearly he is a solid source of useful, if not outstanding performers, and as well as having aboveaverage sorts like Kick On and Lyndon B staying in training, his two-year-olds of 2020 are the result of a book of 100 mares, 12 of them black-type winners, covered at Tweenhills in 2017. Raven’s Pass is next best on this particular list, with 35 per cent of his offspring in Britain and Ireland running to an RPR of at least 80 in 2019. Even taking into consideration libido issues that have restricted the son of Elusive Quality’s racecourse representation, his output has been a little disappointing considering his own enormous ability, with none of his progeny getting any closer to his own peak rating than 10lb. However, he enjoyed something of a moment in 2019, with his two highest rated performers emerging ten years after he retired to Kildangan Stud – seven-length All-Weather Middle-Distance

Championship scorer Matterhorn and Japanese Grade 1-winning sprinter Tower Of London. Intriguingly, Matterhorn is out of a mare by Darshaan, and Tower Of London is out of a mare by Darshaan’s son Dalakhani. The Raven’s Pass-Darshaan cross is also responsible for earlier Group winners Kataniya and Steeler. Initially retired at a fee of €40,000, Raven’s Pass is available at Kildangan at a far more palatable price of €10,000 this year. Mayson, a five-length July Cup winner by Invincible Spirit, awaits a first Patternwinning offspring even with four crops to have raced. That does not tell the full story of his ability as a sire though, as he does have six Listed winners to his name and 14 other stakes performers besides. As this table shows, he also had a healthy 33 per cent of his progeny achieve an RPR of 80 or higher in 2019. Mayson also has a lot of runners in the pipeline – 141 mares covered in 2017, 83 in 2018 and 90 last year – so a small fee reduction from £6,000 to £5,000 at Cheveley Park Stud this year looks generous. Passing Glance is better known as a jumps sire these days but as Australian Group 1 winner and Queen Anne Stakes third Side Glance showed, he can get classy performers on the Flat too. Indeed, from only 16 runners on the Flat in Britain and

Ireland in 2019, five ran to a mark of 80 or higher, or 31 per cent. With the booming market for horses in training in mind, the son of Polar Falcon also boasts a highly respectable lifetime strike-rate of 44 per cent winners to runners over jumps. Available for just £3,000 at Batsford Stud, he should be on the shortlist of all owner-breeders who do not need to worry about sire fashion at yearling sales. The enduring appeal of two elder statesmen of the stallion ranks is illustrated in these figures, with both Sir Percy and Tamayuz turning out 80-plus rated runners in 2019 at a clip of 30 per cent. Unbeaten Group 1-winning two-year-old and Derby victor Sir Percy has proved as versatile at stud as he was on the track and is value at £7,000 at Lanwades Stud. Tamayuz, a top-class miler by Nayef, has had his price at Derrinstown Stud snipped into €10,000 even in the year after his son

Main picture: Raven’s Pass; (top right) Side Glance proved a fine advertisement for his sire Passing Glance; (above right); Slade Power

Mustashry landed the Lockinge Stakes to become his fourth Group 1 winner after Blond Me, G Force and Precieuse. Orientor, who stands at Sidehouse Farm Stud in Scotland at just £1,500, rubs shoulders with some flashier names and even outdoes many of them, with 29 per cent of his 17 runners attaining an RPR of at least 80 last year. Another less star-studded name, Tough As Nails at Old Meadow Stud, has a reasonable concentration of quality in his small racecourse delegation – four out of 15 runners on an RPR of 80 or higher in 2019. Sixties Icon continues to knock in a fair amount of smart performers, including

The beautifully bred son of Epsom Classic winners Galileo and Love Divine remains good value at £6,000 at Norman Court Stud. Make Believe, the Classicwinning son of Makfi who stands at Ballylinch Stud at €12,000, fared best of last year’s first-season sires who figure in our price bracket in this table, with 26 per cent of his runners rated 80 or higher. He is one for budget buyers too, with daughter Rose Of Kildare (out of a mare by Sixties Icon) sourced by trainer Mark Johnston for just €3,000 but earning £115,000 after winning five races including the Firth of Clyde Stakes and Oh So Sharp Stakes. Which new sires for 2020 who stand at £10,000/€12,500 or less offer the best value for money?

Phoenix Of Spain – you’d find the extra €2,500 to gain access to an Irish 2,000 Guineas winner who saw off a champion two-year-old with ease. Inns Of Court looks well priced while Soldier’s Call will be popular. Crystal Ocean is being marketed as a jumps sire, which generally rules out the commercial market, but it’s all about breeding winners and with the right type of mare he could sire Group winners.

Soldier’s Call was very fast and a champion two-year-old in France by a very progressive stallion in Showcasing. Invincible Army is another fast horse who is a good-looking type out of a Group 1-winning mare and by Invincible Spirit. Inns Of Court is another good-looking Invincible Spirit who won multiple Group 2s. All three stand at proven farms who support their stallions.

Eqtidaar. A Group 1 winner by Invincible Spirit (a champion sire of sires) and half-brother to a Group 2 winner in Massaat, he is a very taking individual and for £6,500, that is value! Crystal Ocean is nominated to the jumping ranks but is great value for such a top-class and tough racehorse with the looks.

Le Brivido has a very attractive fee of £7,000. He’s the highest rated horse by his sire Siyouni and rated higher than Siyouni himself. If his progeny look as good as him and perform half as good as Siyouni and Pivotal’s progeny have done, you will be on to a winner. Soldier’s Call is another one who catches my eye in that price range, and Invincible Army is also definitely worth a mention.

Land Force, Eqtidaar, Invincible Army and Le Brivido are by sires standing for €100,000 or more. The impeccably bred Land Force showed good speed to win the Richmond Stakes, while Eqtidaar is the only Group 1 winner within this budget to retire to stud in Britain or Ireland. Invincible Army was tough and consistent, while Le Brivido was impressive in winning the Jersey Stakes.

Who was your pick of last year’s first-season sires (first two-yearolds) from that price bracket and why?

Make Believe. We foaled and raised some lovely horses by him at Oghill, none better than Mark Johnston’s dual Group-3 winning two-year-old Rose Of Kildare. Make Believe was at his best at three and the way he quickened when breaking the track record (beating Limato) in the Prix de la Foret was very taking. The fact he’s made such a good start with his juveniles is extremely encouraging.

Havana Grey and Sioux Nation (below) looked good value last year. Both were good two-yearon olds and wo est at the highe level. They were well supported st in their firs season and both could have an exciting batch of juveniles.

Due Diligence (below) – he produced three stakes horses in his first year and many winners. The added v value to your mare to get a runner and a winner is v very high on my criteria – he upgrades his mares.

Due Diligence has definitely started off on the right foot with his two-year-old runners, including the stakes winners from a first crop of 85 foals. He’s from a great sire line and they have kept his fee reasonable this season. We have a mare in foal to him and have had a few of his offspring here, and they have always been very straightforward with a good attitude. Gutaifan is another one who has started out well with his first crop.

Of the sires still standing up to £10,000/€12,500 both Due Diligence and Make Believe are the standouts from 2019. Both sires had three stakes winners apiece, of which two were Group winners. Make Believe was a Classic winner and is by a Classic winner from the Dubawi line, while Due Diligence, a son of War Front, looks to bring good speed to his progeny. Gutaifan sired over 30 winners with his first crop and has two big crops to follow.

Which other young sires (with or without runners) in that price range take your fancy and why?

One we’ll be supporting this year is Unfortunately. His sire, Society Rock, is sadly missed so it’s great his best son is in Ireland. Buratino was an exceptionally fast two-year-old and had the pedigree. We had some nice foals by Belardo, Decorated Knight and National Defense so we’ll be using them again. Kodi Bear, Prince Of Lir and Cotai Glory gave us nice types too so there are plenty of exciting young sires available.

Kuroshio and Bungle IntheJungle made good starts with their first crops. Both covered decent-sized books last year and when it comes to selling your yearling you might find they have made a bigger impact. I also like the first foals by Profitable. They sold well and caught the eye.

I really liked the El Kabeir foals at the sales and I would imagine they will develop into racey sorts. Belardo wasn’t fancied much in the sales ring but I wouldn’t be surprised if his two-year-olds were racking up the winners come late summer.

Belardo had a fantastic race record and demonstrated soundness racing from two to four at the top level. There’s a lot of good talk about his two-year-olds and he has a good chance of being the next Night Of Thunder. As a son of Lope De Vega he’s bred to succeed and we’ll be sending a mare to him this season. I also like Postponed – we’ve had a few fantastic looking foals by him.

Although Highland Reel and Postponed are about to enter their third seasons at stud, both had strong returns at 2019 foals sales. Galileo’s son Highland Reel looks fantastic value at €12,500. Postponed, a three-time Group 1 winner, stands at just £10,000. The French-based Toronado finished second to Kingman on number of winners on the 2019 second-crop sires list, with 64 winners.

Three obvious ones just above the threshold are Dandy Man, Bated Breath and Farhh but there are plenty of others to consider. Bungle Inthejungle is definitely one breeders seeking fast two-year-olds should be looking at. Fast Company and Camacho have both sired Guineas winners, while Tamayuz and Raven’s Pass can both throw you a good one too and would suit maidens starting off.

Dragon Pulse (below) has been churning out winners for the last few seasons. He’s good value and is a good option to start a mare off.

Havana Gold – he was a Group 1 winner and has already produced a Group 1 winner in top-class sprinter Havana Grey (below). He produces you a racehorse, which at the end of the day n aim. is the main any Fast Compa n has had an n upgrade in his mares and 2020 could be a big one for him too.

Havana Gold has been very consistent with his runners and his stats add up well, while dropping his stud fee back down this season is also a positive. Bungle Inthejungle and Camacho have also been very consistent with their progeny in the sales ring and on the track with great twoyear-old results, which is what the breeders want from both aspects if you’re buying to sell or race.

Of the well-established sires the French-based Dream Ahead sired six stakes winners, including two Group 1 winners. Camacho, a Danehill half-brother to Showcasing, gets plenty of winners every year and is commercial within the yearling market. Although Raven’s Pass covers restricted numbers, he has good statistics and Equiano, who sired a Breeders’ Cup winner in 2019, is more than capable of getting Group winners too.

Try to distract Joe Foley (below) and then take his notes! Failing that, just do as researc as much research time perm mits and look att as many horses as you ca an. You can’t bea at doing the hom mework an nd it always pays off.

Work the sales hard and try to think outside of the box! For instance, mares in foal to less-popular stallions often offer value and it can be worth forgiving on pedigree to get a better-looking horse.

I like to follow families and I’m always trying to keep an eye on what’s happening in the family. I usually follow anything I liked at the sales that I couldn’t afford and then see if I can have a bit of luck before it all becomes too obvious! This has led me to finding mares in a variety of places . . . recently Facebook was one.

All of the European sales have options for all levels of breeder and if you do your homework a few slip through the cracks. You need something with a good pedigree to back you up in case the foal isn’t a standout. I like a good-walking mare in hope she passes that on. If you can’t afford a young mare with a good page, then maybe an older mare who might not be good for some could be your diamond among stones.

Do plenty of research and look at as many mares/fillies as you can. Pedigree is an important factor. A good page can help when offering the offspring at auction, particularly when using sires at this level. Older exposed mares can offer value. Fillies and mares from the major breeding operations can mean there could be plenty happening within the pedigree that is not on the catalogue page.

Which other older or more established sires are worth using at those prices and why?

Any tips for sourcing a mare cheaply to send to those stallions?

Royal Ascot star Soldier’s Call looks a safe bet to make his mark THE DIRECTORY James Thomas guides you through a selection of British and Irish stallions standing for £10,000/€12,500 or less New for 2020

Those looking for a horse who possessed brazen speed and knockout good looks need search no further than Soldier’s Call, who will stand alongside the ever-popular Dandy Man at Joe Foley’s Ballyhane Stud in County Carlow. The son of Showcasing – himself one of the stallions to progress from budget level to blue-chip status – was precocious enough to win the Windsor Castle Stakes, which makes him the only Royal Ascot juvenile winner to retire to stud in 2020 at less than £10,000/€12,500. He reaffirmed his class when he claimed the Group 2 Flying Childers Stakes, before being beaten just a neck by Mabs Cross in the Prix de l’Abbaye. Soldier’s Call kept exalted company at three, most notably when he reached the frame behind Blue Point in the King’s Stand Stakes and

Battaash in the Nunthorpe. Upon his retirement he received glowing praise from his trainer Archie Watson, who said: “He showed brilliance right from the start and he was a joy to train. He’s such a goodlooking colt with a wonderful temperament and attitude.” The exploits of Kingman, Cable Bay and Australian champion I Am Invincible have suggested that Invincible Spirit is on the cusp of becoming an important sire of sires, and three more sons of the Irish National Stud linchpin have entered the more affordable end of the stallion market for 2020. Shadwell’s Nunnery Stud welcomes homebred Group 1 scorer Eqtidaar, who progressed from a smart winning two-year-old into a high-class sprinting threeyear-old, whose career highlight came when the Sir Michael Stoute-trained colt landed the Commonwealth

Cup at Royal Ascot. Not only is Eqtidaar by a burgeoning sire of sires, he is also the third foal out of Madany, a two-year-old winner by Acclamation whose other offspring are headed by the Group 2-winning Massaat. Yeomanstown Stud introduces Invincible Army, a five-year-old who boasted talent and toughness in equal measure. He won six races during three seasons in training with James Tate, most notably the Group 3 Sirenia Stakes at two – in which he handed out the first of two beatings to Eqtidaar – the Pavilion Stakes at three and the Group 2 Duke of York Stakes at four. Completing Invincible Spirit’s triumvirate is Inns Of Court, who begins his stallion career at Tally-Ho Stud in County Westmeath. Classy and precocious enough to win on debut at two, Darley homebred Inns Of Court was kept in training into his fiveyear-old campaign by Andre Fabre. He ran 18 times, winning seven races, including the Group 2 Prix du Gros-Chene over five furlongs, which he won by two and a half lengths. He also won a trio of Group 3s, and only narrowly missed out Continues page 10

on Group 1 laurels when beaten a short head by Al Wukair in the Prix Jacques le Marois, before going down by the same margin behind One Master in the Prix de la Foret. With the rise and rise of Siyouni showing no signs of slowing, his son Le Brivido looks an interesting recruit to Overbury Stud. He trounced subsequent triple Grade 1 winner Uni by no less than two lengths on his debut, and quickly made up into a high-class performer at three. He was beaten just a short head in the Group 1 Poule d’Essai des Poulains, before dropping back to seven furlongs to win the Jersey Stakes. It is worth noting that

First Foals of 2020

Having covered a full book of 145 mares in 2019, the stallion career of Whitsbury Manor Stud’s Havana Grey looks to have some notably firm foundations in place, with quantity underpinned by an ample amount of quality. As a Group 1-winning sprinter whose pedigree combines the blood of Galileo and Dark Angel, it is easy to see why breeders have latched on to Havana Grey, and with

BLOODSTOCK SPECIAL BREEDING ON A BUDGET From page 11

Stakes-winning son of Scat Daddy, proved a smash hit with breeders at Coolmore’s Castlehyde Stud, having covered 241 mares in his first book. This weight of numbers means the good-looking five-year-old will be on plenty of radars as his stud career progresses, and he has quality as well as quantity on his side, with 33 stakes performers and the dams of Dandy Man, Exospheric and Glory Awaits among his concubines. Kessaar returned home to the O’Callaghan family’s TallyHo Stud where he was bred, and now stands alongside his own sire Kodiac, who also started his stallion career at the more affordable end of the pricing spectrum. Given the commercial success his sire enjoyed, allied to a race record that includes ready successes in the Group 3 Sirenia Stakes and the Group 2 Mill Reef Stakes, a fee of €6,000 is likely to tempt plenty. Another product of the TallyHo production line is Unfortunately, who has returned to Ireland to take up residency at Linda and Reddy Coffey’s Oak Lodge Stud in County Tipperary. The Group 1 Prix Morny winner didn’t really receive the kind of recognition from breeders that his pedigree and race record deserve during his stint at Cheveley Park Stud, but being a son of the muchmissed Society Rock should pique people’s interest now that he is back in Ireland, while a fee of €5,500 will undoubtedly look money well spent if he throws foals in his own image. James Garfield landed the Mill Reef the year before Kessaar, and the son of Exceed And Excel now stands at Rathbarry Stud. The likes of Excelebration, Helmet and Kuroshio have already shown Exceed And Excel in a positive light as a sire of sires, while James Garfield is also from a female line containing the

Kessaar’s standing fee of €6,000 at Tally-Ho will be tempting for many names of some notable stallions, namely half-brothers Invincible Spirit and Kodiac. The same family also produced Gustav Klimt, who is out of Massarra, a Listedwinning daughter of the influential Rafha, and by the all-conquering Galileo. The Group 2 Superlative Stakes winner covered a book of 117 mares at Coolmore’s Castlehyde Stud, including nine stakes performers, and has had his fee clipped in

ahead of his second season on covering duty. Another Castlehyde resident is Order Of St George, who proved the busiest new sire of 2019, with 275 mares in his debut book. The majority of those will have been jumps mares, including the dams of Total Recall, The Worlds End and Bobs Worth, but at €6,500 the three-time Group 1 winner, who scored over a mile at two, could be an absolute gift to Flat breeders

with the right type of mare. Lightning Spear may lack the numbers that some of his peers have, with the subfertile son of Pivotal having produced 55 foals in his debut crop, but that does mean those breeders willing to chance sending him a mare can do so for a bargain sum. Tweenhills have reduced his fee by 41 per cent ahead of his second season at stud, while the first 50 mares booked will transfer from October 1

contracts to lifetime breeding rights, if the mare is safely in foal come the start of October. Given Lightning Spear, who raced from two right through to his Sussex Stakes-winning seven-year-old campaign, also possesses a solid pedigree and the looks to have commanded 260,000gns as a yearling, he offers breeders an awful lot of bang for their buck. Massaat has had his fee held at £5,000 at Mickley Stud, and rightfully so given he won the Group 2 Hungerford Stakes and was Group 1-placed at two, behind Air Force Blue in the Dewhurst, and at three, behind Galileo Gold in the 2,000 Guineas. His introductory book consisted of 84 mares, including Flirtinaskirt, the dam of Liberty Beach. If he passes on his own impressive physicality to his foals, he seems certain to outperform his modest fee. Given the success of the Scat Daddy line, Smooth Daddy always seemed likely to attract his fair share of attention, and he duly covered 72 mares under the Compas Stallions banner at Clongiffen Stud in 2019. Micheal Orlandi’s stallions are now housed at Starfield Stud, and with Scat Daddy fever showing no sign

of abating, Smooth Daddy, who beat Time Test when winning the Grade 3 Fort Marcy Stakes, should find his services in demand again. Rajasinghe broke the juvenile track record when winning the 2017 Coventry Stakes, and also shares his sire, Choisir, with Starspangledbanner, whose progeny include the likes of The Wow Signal, Home Of The Brave and Millisle.

First Yearlings of 2020

No first-crop sire’s foals received quite the reception that Postponed’s got in the sales ring last year, with his sons and daughters averaging 61,8120gns, headed by the half-brother to Tropbeau, who was bought by Stroud Coleman Bloodstock for 280,000gns, and a sibling to Cormorant, who went the way of Yeomanstown Stud for 150,000gns. Foals from the debut crop of the four-time Group 1 winner were conceived at a cost of £20,000, yet the son of Dubawi is available to breeders at just half that price in 2020. When the popularity of his early progeny, his top-class race record and appealing pedigree,

not least that he shares his sire with Night Of Thunder, are taken into account, a fee of £10,000 looks exceptional value. Another well-credentialed son of Dubawi whose first yearlings hit the market later this year is Time Test, the Juddmonte homebred who

stands his third year at the National Stud at an unchanged fee of £8,500. The dual Group 2 winner, has covered 204 mares across his two books, including the likes of Lynnwood Chase – dam of Star Catcher and Cannock Chase – and Scuffle – dam of St Leger hero Logician – indicating strength in depth

from the Acclamation sire line which is responsible for the likes of Dark Angel and Equiano. The Prix de la Foret winner, a powerful physical model who shares his page with the mighty Montjeu, covered 160 mares in his first year, and hit three figures again in year two, while his first foals fetched up to €120,000. It hardly seems believable that a three-time Group 1-winning son of Galileo from an exceptional family could qualify to be included in this list, but, at a generous-looking €9,000, that is precisely where the Irish National Stud’s Decorated Knight finds himself. The now eight-year-old won the Jebel Hatta, Tattersalls Gold Cup and Irish Champion Stakes, in which he beat no less a rival than Poet’s Word, before taking up stallion duties, when his owners Blue Diamond Stud announced they would be lending their colour bearer support both in terms of mares and in the sales ring. They have made good on their word in a big way, not only sending Decorated Knight a host of blue-chip mares, but signing for a number of his foals at public auction, purchases that contributed to a healthy foal average of 58,715gns. However, it was Jamie Railton who went to 190,000gns for Decorated

Star value Decorated Knightt Top Topclass and blue-blooded, the son of Galileo boasts all the credentials of a stallion who should stand for significantly more Postponed A blue-chip prospect standing at a budget fee, the popularity of his debut foals seems unlikely to be the last we hear of him Profitable A textbook example of a commercial stallion, whose early progeny would appear to be in the image of their sire

Decorated Knight has the looks and the class to prove top value at his current price Knight’s most expensive offspring, a colt out of Princess Noor. As if all that weren’t enough, Decorated Knight – who is out of Pearling, a sister to Giant’s Causeway and You’resothrilling, dam of Gleneagles – has also let down into a stunning-looking physical model. The sum total of those attributes makes his fee look very appealing indeed. Similar comments apply to Highland Reel, who claimed seven Group/Grade 1 wins on his globetrotting exploits but yet now stands at a reduced fee of just €12,500. There have been few performers in recent times who have commanded the following that Highland Reel did, and that duly followed him into his stud career, having covered 181 mares during his first season at Coolmore. Among that number were 42 stakes performers – a punchy 23 per cent – while the resulting foals fetched up to 150,000gns. Highland Reel also offers plenty of pedigree power, not only being by Galileo but as brother to the Group 1-winning Cape Of Good Hope, the dual Group 2 scorer Idaho and out of Hveger, a Danehill sister to five-time elite winner Elvstroem and a half-sister to Queen Anne Stakes victor

‘There have been few performers in recent times who have commanded the following that Highland Reel did, and that duly followed him into his stud career’ Haradasun. If his progeny inherit only a modicum of their sire’s talent and looks, they should find favour easy to come by. The Irish National Stud will also see the first yearling crop of National Defense head to the sales this autumn, with the Group 1-winning son of Invincible Spirit standing his third term at €8,000. Darley also launch their own son of Invincible Spirit into the yearling market in the shape of Profitable, winner of the King’s Stand Stakes. Profitable covered 185 mares in 2018 and welcomed 143 the following year, the quantity being backed up by quality, with 45 stakes performers spread across his two books so far. Profitable ticks so many of the boxes required by the modern commercial sire,

namely sire-line and a penchant for speed, and his first crop of foals duly caused a stir at the sales, with three youngsters fetching a six-figure sum, including the €205,000 half-brother to Jash bought by Hamish Macauley. Cotai Glory, who ran second to Profitable in the King’s Stand Stakes, has every

chance of furthering the reputation of Exceed And Excel as a sire of sires, having covered 180 mares in his first

year at Tally-Ho Stud, where he also serviced 118 mares in 2019. A tough and talented sprinter, he bears all the

Decorated Knight has been sent a host of blue-chip mares

hallmarks of a sire that pinhookers could latch on to in a big way. Tally-Ho is also represented by Galileo Gold, another relation to Montjeu. The son of Paco Boy is best remembered for his Classic-winning threeyear-old season, when he

landed the 2,000 Guineas and St James’s Palace Stakes, but he was also a high-class juvenile too, having claimed the Group 2 Vintage Stakes. With 141 mares covered in his debut book, he will have plenty of ammunition to aim at the yearling sales.

The same is also true of Yeomanstown Stud’s El Kabeir, with the striking grey son of Scat Daddy having covered books of 151 and 90 in his first years standing in Ireland. Noted judge Philip Stauffenberg bought El Kabeir’s priciest foal, a colt

who fetched 65,000gns at Tattersalls. While the likes of Tally-Ho and Yeomanstown are past masters at sending stallions on their way to success, Geoff Turnbull’s Elwick Stud is a newcomer to the sector. Nonetheless, the operation’s

Mondialiste clearly made a few fans at the foal sales, with Peter and Ross Doyle, who bought the colt out of Dame Hester for 60,000gns, and Mags O’Toole, who signed for the colt out of Moghrama Harbour at €50,000, among his supporters. As a dual Grade

1-winning son of Galileo from a deep Wertheimer family, he has every right to punch above a fee of £6,000. As a breeze-up sales-topper who went on to land the Windsor Castle Stakes at Royal Continues page 16

WHITSBURY MANOR STUD

Adaay, who made a winning debut himself at two, can get his stud career off to a flying start

Ascot followed by the Group 2 Flying Childers Stakes, Overbury Stud’s Ardad, a son of the ever-popular Kodiac, fits the brief for many a commercial operator. He covered 132 mares in his first year at stud, among which were 11 stakes performers, while the resulting foals fetched up to 52,000gns, having been conceived at just £6,500.

First Two-YearOlds of 2020

Whitsbury Manor Stud’s Adaay has all the hallmarks of a sire who can get his stud career off to a flying start, with the son of Kodiac, who fetched 240,000gns at the breeze-ups, having made a winning debut in May of his own two-yearold season. He progressed at three, winning the Group 2 Sandy Lane Stakes, and lacked nothing in support upon retiring to stud, having covered 127 mares in his debut season. His yearlings fetched up to £210,000, with Shadwell securing the half-brother to Heartache and Heartwarming. Kodiac has three other sire sons fielding their first runners in 2020, the best of which on the racetrack was the classy Kodi Bear, winner of the Group 2 Celebration Mile. The eight-year-old covered 109 mares in his first season at Rathbarry Stud, while China Horse Club purchased his most expensive yearling, a colt out of Arbeel for €100,000. Another first-crop sire son of Kodiac is Prince Of Lir – winner of the Norfolk Stakes, a race with a recent roll of honour that includes sire on fire No Nay Never. The Ballyhane Stud resident had a debut book of 126 mares and, despite his first crop being conceived at a fee of just €5,000, his yearlings included a 260,000gns colt bought by Sackville Donald. Rounding off Kodiac’s four-pronged attack on the first-season sire standings is Rathasker Stud’s Coulsty. The Prix de Meautry scorer has a smaller representation in his debut crop than others in his peer group, but bucked the

Sons of Kodiac poised to make a big impression trend by covering more mares in year two, with 106 concubines in his second book of mares. Kodiac himself is, of course, the linchpin of the Tally-Ho Stud ranks, and this year the O’Callaghan family’s operation will also be represented by two sires with their debut juveniles, including July and Richmond Stakes scorer Mehmas. Not only does Mehmas share his

sire with the mighty Dark Angel, source of talents such as Battaash and Harry Angel, he is also bred on precisely the same cross, being out of a daughter of Machiavellian. With breeders sending him 187 mares in his first year, followed by 177 in year two, Mehmas could well be about to follow in the footsteps of other Tally-Ho celebrities such Continues page 18

as Kodiac and Society Rock. The O’Callaghans also launch something a little different in Vadamos, a Group 1-winning son of Monsun. The Prix du Moulin winner, who later raced against wondermare Winx in Australia, was well received by breeders, with 187 mares in his first year giving him a serious chance of making a big impression, particularly as 27 of those (14 per cent) were stakes performers. Four members of the Darley roster who stand for less than £10,000/€12,000 in 2020 have their first runners on the track this year, including The Last Lion, who packed a lot into his sole season in training by winning the Brocklesby on his debut and bringing the curtain down on his racing career with victory in the Middle Park Stakes. The son of Choisir, who shares his sire with Starspangledbanner, saw his first crop fetch an average of €40,000, including a 170,000gns half-brother to Soldier’s Call. The Last Lion’s Kildangan Stud stablemate Belardo, who beat Kodi Bear when winning the Dewhurst Stakes during his own juvenile career, also has his first two-year-olds in 2020. The son of Lope De Vega, who later added the Lockinge Stakes to his racing CV,

Markaz, a brother to sprint sensation Mecca’s Angel, has around 78 two-year-olds to run for him. The dual Group 3-winning son of Dark Angel looks all about speed, having been at his best over six furlongs, while he is out of a through-and-through sprinter too. Tara Stud’s Estidhkaar, another son of Dark Angel, has a two-year-old representation numbering around 106. The Superlative and Champagne Stakes winner covered his debut book at a fee of €5,000, and supplied three six-figure yearlings, headed by a 140,000gns colt signed for by Roger Varian. There has been plenty of buzz around the debut crop of Cheveley Park Stud’s Twilight Son, with the dual Group 1-winning sprinter looking a potential successor to his own sire, Kyllachy. With 122 juveniles to run for him, Twilight Son certainly has the ammunition to make a big impression. The Aga Khan’s Harzand

Fascinating Rock was trained by Dermot Weld, as was Bobby’s Kitten, who is at the same stage of his burgeoning stud career, with 77 juveniles on the ground. The Lanwades Stud sire, winner of the Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint and the Cork Stakes, saw his yearlings go the way of noted judges such as Shadwell, BBA Ireland and Mark Johnston. Pearl Secret may have just the 42 two-year-olds to run for him, but the progeny of the Temple Stakes-winning son of Compton Place certainly caught the eye at the sales, as his yearlings fetched up £55,000, having been bred at a mere £4,000. promising Group 3 winners Good Vibes and Streamline, as well as Listed scorer Sir Boris. The son of War Front developed into a high-class sprinter at three, finishing runner-up to Slade Power in the Diamond Jubilee Stakes. If his progeny follow suit, Due Diligence’s fee of £8,500 could look very good value indeed. The race between this year’s sophomore sires looks a competitive one, but after a strong showing from his first two-year-olds, Ballylinch Stud’s Make Believe looks to have all the ammunition needed for a big season. He sired 16 winners across Europe, including dual Group 3 scorer Rose Of Kildare, while the likes of wide-margin maiden victor Mishriff are entitled to have Classic aspirations. No first-crop sire in 2019 supplied more winners than Yeomanstown Stud’s Gutaifan, who blazed a trail from the off, and rounded off the season with 32 of his sons and daughters having scored across Europe, having hit that figure at a clip of 35 per cent. Despite such punchy numbers, the son of Dark Angel stands for just €6,000 in 2020, less than half of what his fee was when he remained totally unproven. Every young stallion needs a flagship horse to help put their name in lights, and in Pierre

BLOODSTOCK SPECIAL BREEDING ON A BUDGET

Cappella Sansevero could prove a real snip From page 20

Lapin, Cappella Sansevero has precisely that. The Roger Varian-trained colt, a halfbrother to Harry Angel, went unbeaten during his juvenile season, a run that included a ready victory in the Group 2 Mill Reef Stakes. Should he progress as seems likely, Cappella Sansevero’s fee at the new Starfield Stud could well look like a snip. Another young sire who supplied a sizeable amount of two-year-old winners last year is Darley’s Outstrip, who fielded 22 successful runners across Europe. That roll of honour is headed by the hardy Flippa The Strippa, winner of two races, including the Listed National Stakes. The exploits of Weatherbys

Super Sprint winner Bettys Hope advertised the talents of Rathasker Stud’s Anjaal, while the likes of Above, a three-time winner and Group 3-placed colt owned by Qatar Racing, were among the sire’s 19 first-crop winners. Any stakes winner is a feather in the cap of a first-crop sire, and that is what Free Eagle’s son Justifier became when he won a Listed event at Tipperary. The son of High Chaparral was also responsible for the Listed-placed Auxilia

among a respectable total of 12 winners, all of which augurs well for a horse who progressed markedly from two to three and was at his best as a four-yearold. It would be a surprise if his runners don’t do the same. Hot Streak was another of last year’s freshmen to supply a black type winner when daughter Flaming Princess landed the Listed Prix Cavalassur de la Vallee d’Auge. The Tweenhills-based son of Iffraaj sired ten other winners in his debut crop.

Tom Peacock looks at the established/ veteran veteran stallions of 2020 FINDING a proven Group 1 sire from this price category might appear a difficult task but several have managed to provide a reasonable answer to the question. Tamayuz, who has already claimed Classic success in France, added a fourth Group 1 to his tally from Derrinstown

when late developer Mustashry beat Laurens in the Lockinge at Newbury. Although his progeny are not quite selling at their previous peak, his yearlings averaged out at a three-fold return on his stud fee in 2019. Meanwhile Raven’s Pass made the Group 1 breakthrough in 2018 with Royal Marine in the Prix Jean-Luc Lagardere and doubled his tally last year when a member of Darley’s Japanese brigade, Tower Of
