BLOODSTOCK SPECIAL CHELTENHAM FESTIVAL REVIEW
A
WARM welcome to the first Cheltenham Review supplement the bloodstock department has produced. Hard to believe it has already been a week since the Gold Cup, in which Minella Indo and Jack Kennedy put Beat Hollow on the sires’ leaderboard. Half a dozen of the sires who had at least one winner at Prestbury Park were by Sadler’s Wells, perhaps not a surprise but his name definitely rang out. Yeats was among them, and he certainly had a cracking week, siring four winners in Heaven Help Us, Chantry House, Flooring Porter and Mount Ida. Two other sires likewise notched an impressive four winners, but sadly Yeats is the only one of the three still with us, Jeremy and Stowaway having died in 2014 and 2015 respectively. Jeremy was only 11 and had sired just the two dedicated jumps crops, while, although aged 21, Stowaway was far from done with either. Cheltenham Festival week brought with it the usual heady mix of heaven and heartbreak for breeders across Ireland and Britain, and France, and in the pages that follow Martin Stevens and Nancy Sexton turn the spotlight on some of the sires who shone over the four days. We also bring you the roll of honour (two-legged as well as four), along with a reminder of the results at jump racing’s Olympics. Like everyone, breeders watched on from home, rather than at Cheltenham, but hopefully this time next year some will be able to not just reflect on a winner or two but be able to say, I was there’. Win, lose or draw, congratulations to anyone who had so much as a runner last week, with the journey from birth to racecourse fraught with hazards, and here’s to looking forward to a more conventional 2022 festival.

Stowaway Ronnie O’Neill had to show fellow National Hunt breeders the way after he secured Stowaway for his Whytemount Stud at the turn of the millennium, covering mostly his own mares with the Group 2-winning son of Slip Anchor at the outset. Stowaway’s resulting first crops, foaled between 2002 and 2009, comprised 15, 25, 22, 22, 21, 22, 36 and 24 foals; paltry numbers, but from them emerged several useful runners, including Away We Go, Rightway Star and Western Leader early on. Slowly, momentum began to grow behind the stallion. He sired 66 foals in 2010 and 100 in 2011, when he became Britain and Ireland’s busiest sire on the back of Champagne Fever, Hidden Cyclone, Aland Islands and Mart Lane materialising as further promising talents for him. He covered 325 mares that year to give him a bumper 2012 crop of 183. That was followed by 172 foals in 2013, another 172 in 2014 and 138 in 2015 — the demand for his services sustained by the arrival of Outlander and Kilcooley on the scene – before his death in February 2015 at the age of 21. It is the members of those larger crops who excelled at the Cheltenham Festival this month, and could even propel Stowaway to a first champion National Hunt sire title. Four of them scored at Prestbury Park, led by the mare Put The Kettle On grinding out success in the Champion Chase and Monkfish confirming himself the most exciting novice chaser around with a decisive victory in the Brown Advisory. Another daughter, Telmesomethinggirl, notched an impressive win in the mares’ novice hurdle, while son The Shunter might have won at a lower level but is equally as laudable, having added the Paddy Power Plate to his earlier triumphs in the Greatwood and Morebattle hurdles this season. Stowaway also got two Grade 1 runners-up on the scoresheet at this year’s festival – Fiddlerontheroof in the Brown Advisory and Kilcruit in the Champion Bumper – and a third-place finisher, with Tea Clipper taking bronze in the Coral Cup. No doubt about it, the sire was a serious force for good in National Hunt breeding. With his youngest crop aged six, there will be few opportunities for traders to sell his stock any more, although breeders will no doubt be keen to add daughters of such a good sire to their broodmare bands. The remarkable rags-to-riches story of Stowaway should also serve as a reminder that the less obvious names in the ranks of jumps stallions, even those

little used by other breeders, are worthy of consideration.
Yeats Legendary stayer Yeats looked a shoo-in to become a successful National Hunt sire when he retired to Castlehyde Stud in 2010. He was, after all, a four-time winner of the Gold Cup and a son of the mighty Sadler’s Wells out of a Top Ville mare, just like the influential Montjeu. His second career has not played out nearly so smoothly, though, as evidenced by the fact his 2021 fee of €5,000 is half his introductory asking price. Yeats sired 331 foals from his first three crops, many out of
blue-chip National Hunt broodmares and the odd Flat producer. Those generations are now aged between eight and ten, and include the Flat stakes scorers Lord Yeats and Montaly, Grade 1-winning jumps racemares Augusta Kate and Shattered Love, plus Ladbrokes Trophy hero De Rasher Counter. Not a bad return at all. Coolmore lowered Yeats’ fee to €6,000 in the following three seasons, which encouraged even more breeders to use him. He has 167 seven-year-olds, 172 six-year-olds and 174 five-year-olds resulting from those matings.
Intriguingly, it is those cheaper crops that gave the sire his best Cheltenham Festival, with the six-year-old Flooring Porter leading his rivals a merry dance in the Stayers’ Hurdle, seven-year-old Chantry House winning the Marsh, and the same-aged mares Heaven Help Us and Mount Ida taking the Coral Cup and Fulke Walwyn Kim Muir Challenge Cup respectively. His older progeny, who are proving to be admirably durable sorts, were also on the premises at the meeting though, with Aye Right and ten-year-olds Shattered Love and Some Neck finishing third.
Racing Post stats confirm the impression that runners by Yeats tend to improve with age, as he boasts a 25 per cent winners-to-runners strike-rate in bumpers that increases to 45 per cent in hurdles and 54 per cent in chases. Yeats suffered a little dip in popularity after those bigger books, and has 92 four-year-olds, 50 three-year-olds, 60 two-year-olds and 88 yearlings. He covered 123 mares last year, a solid number but by no means large by Coolmore National Hunt standards. With Flooring Porter and co representing him to such good

Jeremy A tragedy of what might have been. Jeremy had given a clue that he would be an important source of jumping talent when his earlier Flat-bred crops conceived at the Irish National Stud yielded Grade 1 winners Jer’s Girl, Our Conor and Whiskey Sour. However, he had only time to sire two National Hunt-bred crops at his second home of Garryrichard Stud before an injury sustained during
exercise necessitated his euthanisation aged only 11 in 2014. Those two generations have confirmed he was indeed a wonderful influence in the winter game, and magnified the sadness of his early death. The older cohort, comprising 174 seven-year-olds, includes two of the sire’s four winners at this year’s Cheltenham Festival – Supreme Novices’ Hurdle hero Appreciate It and determined Close Brothers Mares’ Hurdle scorer Black Tears. Appreciate It and Black Tears are among a remarkable 15 National Hunt black-type winners from that crop, still relatively young in age. The others include big names such as Birchdale, Mister Fisher, Reserve Tank, Scarlet And Dove and The Glancing Queen. There are five black type-placed seven-year-olds by Jeremy besides, including Ultima Handicap Chase runner-up Happygolucky, as well as another 16 multiple winners and 21 one-time winners in this group. Jeremy’s two other festival winners this month were his six-year-olds Sir Gerhard, who struck in the Champion Bumper, and Belfast Banter, who delivered a smooth success in the County Hurdle. This crop of 156 also contains the Listed-winning mares Castra Vetera and Enjoy It, four other black type-placed performers, and 16 further winners — including big-priced point-to-point graduates Lets Go Champ and Only The Bold. With Jeremy long gone and no more of his young stock left to trade, breeders and agents can only shake their heads in disbelief at the sire’s posthumous success. Garryrichard Stud does at least have a worthy successor to Jeremy on its roster, though, in the shape of Hillstar. Another son of Danehill Dancer, he is a Grade 1 and Royal Ascot-winning half-brother to joint-world champion Crystal Ocean. His first foals are four-year-olds, and if it had been an ordinary year we would have surely seen one or
two of his early runners storm to success in the Irish point-to-point field by now. The only son of the sorely missed Jeremy at stud in Britain and Ireland, meanwhile, is the hard-knocking Group 2 winner Success Days, who is standing his second season at Kilbarry Lodge Stud.
Flemensfirth Beeches Stud stalwart Flemensfirth wasted little time in setting out his stall as a fine source of jumping talent. The first crop sired by the Group 1-winning son of Alleged, foaled way back in 1999, contained Champion Bumper heroine Total Enjoyment, fellow Cheltenham Festival winner Idole First, Feltham Novices’ Chase scorer Joe Lively and Grand National runner-up King Johns Castle. That opened the floodgates to a rush of success for him, with the likes of Beshabar, Flemenstar, Foxrock, Imperial Commander, Lostintranslation, Magic Of Light, Muirhead, Pandorama, Relegate, The Last Samuri, Tidal Bay, Topofthegame and Waiting Patiently following. Flemensfirth added another two festival winners to that illustrious roll of honour this year, both mares: Colreevy in the inaugural Mrs Paddy Power Mares’ Chase and Mrs Milner in the Pertemps Final. He was also on the mark at the meeting with Coral Cup runner-up Craigneiche and Ryanair Chase third Tornado Flyer. Sadly, they aren’t making them by Flemensfirth any more, as the multiple champion National Hunt sire was given a well-earned retirement after his 23rd covering season last year. But, on a brighter note, he has plenty of young stock coming through the system. He has a final crop of around 50 yearlings, and the cream of those were predictably in strong demand at the foal sales over the winter. Two fillies fetched €80,000, with Rathmore Stud paying that figure for a half-sister to Irish Saint and Jane Mangan matching it for a daughter of Grade 3 winner Morning Run.
Flemensfirth also has 76 two-year-olds, 93 three-year-olds and 118 four-year-olds. The last-named crop lit up last season’s store sales, with Coolmore giving €155,000 for a half-sister to Black Tears and Ronnie O’Leary going to €150,000 to secure a gelding out of Grade 2-winning hurdler Shadow Eile. We should hear plenty more from the sire even further into the future, as his daughters have excelled in the breeding shed. Among the Grade 1 winners they have already produced are Identity Thief, Next Destination and Roksana.
Colreevy makes an especially appealing broodmare prospect, not just because she is a Grade 1 winner by Flemensfirth. She is also a half-sister to Munster National winner Spider Web, Martin Pipe Conditional Jockeys’ Hurdle third Runfordave and Henry de Bromhead’s exciting novice chaser January Jets.
Sholokhov It feels as though Sholokhov has been a fixture in National Hunt breeding for years, but in fact the 22-year-old son of Sadler’s Wells’ two winners at this year’s Cheltenham Festival
— seven-year-old Arkle hero Shishkin and the year-younger Ballymore scorer Bob Olinger — hail from his first Irish-conceived crops. Sholokhov — bred by Jim Bolger out of Listed winner La Meilleure, making him a half-brother to the dam of Soldier Of Fortune — was campaigned by Coolmore, for whom he won the Gran Criterium at two and finished second in the Irish Derby and Coral-Eclipse at three. He was sold by the powerhouse operation late in his racing career, and carried Gary Tanaka’s colours Continues page 4

thereafter. So when it came to his retirement he headed not to the Coolmore National Hunt ranks, as might have been expected of a Group 1-winning son of Sadler’s Wells trained by Aidan O’Brien, but to Germany instead. Sholokhov stood at Gestüt Etzean from 2004 until 2012, and proved a fine servant to his custodians and other German breeders. He supplied Preis der Diana and Grosser Preis von Baden heroine Night Magic, crowned horse of the year in her native country, along with her Group 3-winning brother Night Wish (now ensconced in the stallion boxes at Haras de Montaigu) and Group 2 scorer Monami (dam of last year’s Preis der Diana winner Miss Yoda). Much to the delight of stud manager Ralf Kredel, an ex-showjumper who enjoys watching horses tackle obstacles, Etzean bred brilliant Cheltenham Gold Cup hero Don Cossack from Sholokhov. German breeders were also to thank for Sholokhov’s other early jumps stars Esmondo, a dual Grade 1 winner at Auteuil, Kruzhlinin, a Grade 3 scorer over fixed brush hurdles turned point-to-point luminary, and Dell’ Arca, a

but by no means the only good one among that number. There is also Msassa, fourth in the Punchestown Champion four-year-old hurdle, and Sunrise Ruby, a three-time winner for Nicky Henderson. Listed winner at Auteuil, while £410,000 point-to-point graduate Wide Receiver has won a bumper and 20-runner maiden hurdle for Gordon Elliott. Their peers Facile A Vivre, Seelotmorebusiness, Slige Dala and Tullybeg are all multiple winners too. There was a quirky subplot to Sholokhov’s successful week at Cheltenham this year as his son Timos, an earlier German-bred Listed winner on the Flat who had stood as a stallion in obscurity in France, was represented by impressive Martin Pipe victor Galopin Des Champs.

Saint Des Saints It might seem strange to single out for praise a sire who did not supply a winner at the Cheltenham Festival for the second year running. But Saint
Des Saints’ record at the meeting in 2020 and 2021 would be the envy of other stallion masters, even without a runner who finished first past the post. Saint Des Saints was on the mark last year with three seconds – Lord Du Mesnil (National Hunt Chase), Saint Calvados (Ryanair Chase) and Dolcita (mares’ novice hurdle) – and two thirds in Elfile (Close Brothers Mares’ Hurdle) and Saint D’Oroux (Boodles Juvenile Hurdle). It was a remarkably similar story 12 months later as the sire delivered another three runners-up – Fusil Raffles (Marsh Novices’ Chase), Gaillard Du Mesnil (Ballymore Novices’ Hurdle) and Saint Sam (Boodles Juvenile Hurdle) – and one third-place finisher, in Haut
En Couleurs (Triumph Hurdle). And there’s more. In those two years, Saint Des Saints has been represented as damsire by Appreciate It, runner-up in the Champion Bumper and then 24-length winner of the Supreme; Envoi Allen, easy winner of the Ballymore and then an unlucky faller in the Marsh; and 2020 County Hurdle scorer Saint Roi. They are following in the footsteps of two megastar maternal grandchildren of Saint Des Saints: Douvan, the dazzling winner of eight Grade 1 races, and De Bon Coeur, the darling of Auteuil. Saint Des Saints has established himself as one of the leading National Hunt sires in France, and has more than earned his right to a punchy covering fee of €15,000 at the age of 23 at Haras d’Etreham. Among his other leading offspring are Aux Ptit Soins, Djakadam, Lyreen Legend, Quel Esprit, Quito De La Roque, Salut Flo and Storm Of Saintly. Unsurprisingly, there is a lot of love for his stock in the industry. Ronnie O’Leary gave €80,000 for one of his geldings at last year’s Goffs Land Rover sale and Paul and Louise Bowtell paid €70,000 for a filly at the Tattersalls Ireland Derby sale. Saint Des Saints’ progeny are set to be a fixture of National Hunt racing even beyond those youngsters reaching maturity on the track, as he has 69 three-year-olds of 2021, 59 two-year-olds and 49 yearlings, and he covered another 78 mares last year. You can’t blame breeders for wanting to use this wonderful wellspring of jumping talent while they still can.

Authorized’s most famous son in the jumps sphere, the indomitable Tiger Roll, gained his 13th career success by treating the Cross Country Chase as a stroll in the park. The Derby-winning son of Montjeu was also represented by mares’ novice hurdle third Mighty Blue, while maternal grandson Sir Gerhard landed the Champion Bumper. Such a pity he is now out of jumps breeders’ reach in Turkey. Beat Hollow continued Ballylinch Stud’s fine tradition of standing dual-purpose stallions, following the likes of Bob Back and King’s Theatre, who also delivered top-flight winners under both codes. The son of Sadler’s Wells’ jumps record was given the ultimate seal of approval at this year’s festival as son Minella Indo ran out a decisive winner of the Gold Cup.
Cloudings proved once again that he is a dab hand with a staying chaser, with Vintage Clouds (below) winning the Ultima at the fifth attempt and Cloudy Glen running second in the Fulke Walwyn Kim Muir Challenge Cup. They both carry the silks of Trevor Hemmings, as did the Old Road Stud sire’s Grand National hero Many Clouds and Grade 2 winners Cloudy Dream and Cloudy Lane. Kapgarde, an elder statesman of the French stallion ranks still in service at Haras de la Hetraie at the age of 22, is the sire of A Plus Tard, who lost little caste in defeat when second in the Gold Cup, and Fakir D’Oudairies, a creditable albeit distant second to Allaho in the Ryanair Chase. As is the case with Saint Des Saints, breeders would be wise
to use him while he is still at their disposal. Maxios, who became Britain and Ireland’s busiest sire when he moved from Germany to Castlehyde Stud last year and was welcomed with 298 mares, supplied his second four-year-old festival winner in as many years as Quilixios stormed to victory in the Triumph Hurdle. The son of Monsun was also on the mark with Aramax in the Boodles in 2020, much to the relief of his numerous supporters. No Risk At All continues to live up to his name as a jumps sire. Haras de Montaigu’s son of My Risk came up with one of the most impressive winners of the meeting in Ryanair Chase victor Allaho, while last year’s Champion Hurdle heroine Epatante – another member of the sire’s first crop of seven-year-olds – ran a creditable third behind Honeysuckle in the same race 12 months later.

Martin Stevens talks to Catherine Cashman of Glenview Stud, whose latest star had two festival winners
N
O DOUBT about it, Sholokhov just has a knack for siring superstar jumpers. First there was Cheltenham Gold Cup hero Don Cossack and now he is responsible for two of the most exciting young horses around in Bob Olinger and Shishkin. It is telling that he is owned by Glenview Stud, the National Hunt arm of Rathbarry Stud, as the County Cork operation also seems to have a knack – for selecting and standing blue-chip stallions such as him. Strong Gale set the standard for the stud in the modern era. His progeny roll of honour reads like a who’s who of jumps celebrities of the 1990s – Ask Tom, Cab On Target, Katabatic, Life Of A Lord, Marlborough, Merry Gale, Opera Hat, Strong Promise, Travado and so on. Then there was Phardante, who gave us the likes of Hanakham, Truckers Tavern and Urubande, and multiple champion sire Presenting, whose long list of Grade 1 winners is headed by the immortal Denman and fellow Cheltenham Gold Cup victor War Of Attrition. Anshan, Good Thyne, King’s Ride and Robin Des Champs also did sterling service for the stud. Catherine Cashman, whose much-missed late husband Liam grew the National Hunt side of the business by expanding into Glenview Stud in 1991, pauses for thought when asked whether she thinks Sholokhov has done enough yet to be mentioned in the same breath as those earlier great sires. “He’s certainly able to get those big festival horses like the others, but you have to remember these are very different times,” she reflects. “We had the likes of Strong Gale and Presenting here from day one of their stallion careers, and there was probably a larger mare population and a smaller pool
studs, neatly illustrating Cashman’s earlier point that breeders insist on proven names nowadays. But the operation remains undaunted by the prospect of launching its own new stallion, as it did so successfully with Presenting, Strong Gale and others, and is introducing Old Persian to the market this year.
‘Sholokhov is laid-back and great to manage’ of stallions in those days, so they were covering 200 or more for a good number of years. “Sholokhov therefore wouldn’t have the same volume of winners as those earlier stallions, but that’s chiefly because he doesn’t have nearly as many foals on the ground.” The nature of the market has changed over the last few decades too, with so many more stallions imported to the Irish National Hunt ranks from mainland Europe after their early French- or German-bred runners have shone over jumps. That was the case with Gran Criterium winner and Irish Derby runner-up Sholokhov, who stood at Gestut Etzean for the first nine years of his second career. He joined Glenview Stud in 2013. “It’s so hard to launch a National Hunt sire straight after they’ve been retired from the track nowadays,” says Cashman. “Everyone is looking for the proven stallion, be it Flat or National Hunt. But it’s especially important for National Hunt stallions to have soldiers on the ground. “We had Sholokhov bought when he was only 13, and of course he was 14 when he stood his first season here and Shishkin [above right] was conceived. Now that he’s the name on everyone’s lips, he’s getting on at 22. “It takes time all right, and it’s often said that all the good National Hunt stallions are nearly dead before they have their name made. They’re a long-term investment but, sure, we have to keep trying!”
In spite of his advanced years, Cashman confirms Sholokhov is in excellent health. “We’ve been looking after him and have limited his book in recent seasons, so he’s covered around 100 to 120 mares and that’s grand,” she says. “That creates its own headaches, though, especially in a year like this when everyone’s looking to use him. But we have to be selective for the sake of the horse. “In fairness to him, he’s very healthy and a very easy horse to manage – he’s never given us any worries that way – so you’d be hoping, touch wood, there would be a good few more years with him yet.” Cashman suggests it is Sholokhov’s easy-going nature, and his ability to transmit that quality to his progeny, that contributes so much to his success. “He’s very laid-back and a great horse to handle,” she says. “The highly charged fellas, they’ll be walking their box and be highly strung, but this one just eats and sleeps. He doesn’t get lit up until he comes into the covering shed.” Importantly, Sholokhov is also able to throw foals who grow into strong, sizable youngsters. “The thing about him is he’s 16.1 hands, but by and large he breeds bigger than himself,” says Cashman. “When you think about Don Cossack,
T
he was nearly 17 hands, Shishkin is 16.3, and I believe Bob Olinger is a good 16.2. “He’s a bit different from the usual Sadler’s Wells horses that way, as on the whole they didn’t tend to breed them overly big, although of course a certain amount of size comes from the mares too.”
S
HOLOKHOV had been in strong demand long before Bob Olinger and Shishkin converted their potential into more Grade 1 laurels at Prestbury Park this month. “He’s been popular with our more established clients since they started booking mares for this season, as they were already on board with him,” explains Cashman. “But since Cheltenham the phones at Glenview have been red hot, with other breeders being so impressed and wanting to get involved now.” Glenview may not be able to accommodate all the breeders who want to send mares to Sholokhov this year, so it is just as well it has a roster bursting at the seams with other stallions who hold significant commercial appeal. Blue Bresil, who arrived in Cork last year Catherine Cashman: “It’s important for National Hunt stallions to have soldiers on the ground”

via Haras de Croix Sonnet in France and Yorton Farm in Britain, has been highly sought after. The son of Smadoun covered 190 mares last year. “There’s a lot of buzz around him and he’s booked full,” says Cashman. “He’s very popular because he breeds good, strong individuals and it’s all about size at the sales now. Buyers want to see big, robust horses who will jump fences in time but have that bit of speed too. “Blue Bresil delivers that. He’s proven he can do it with the likes of Mick Jazz, Le Prezien and L’Autonomie in France, and he’s had a few nice point-to-point winners in Ireland in the last few years who are getting to the races now.” Blue Bresil’s son Royale Pagaille has made rapid progress through the chasing ranks for Venetia Williams this season, and in the circumstances probably did well to finish sixth in the Gold Cup this month. Cashman is willing to give the seven-year-old more chances, and reasons: “He was thrown in at the deep end at Cheltenham, and he likes it soft but faced drying ground there. He was also missing two hind shoes after the race. There had to be something amiss, as he has shown he’s a brilliant jumper and he wasn’t jumping so well on this occasion.” Glenview Stud has also secured high-class racehorses turned proven jumps sires Malinas, Shirocco and Youmzain from various other
HE son of Dubawi, out of a Singspiel mare from the magnificent Miesque family, was an impressively tough winner of the King Edward VII Stakes and Great Voltigeur Stakes at three and picked up top-level victories in the Dubai Sheema Classic and Northern Dancer Turf Stakes at four. “He’s going down very well with breeders,” reports Cashman. “He has size and scope, and if he breeds them in his own image he should have some very nice foals on the ground next year. “He has the ideal stallion’s profile. He won at two, three and four, and like Presenting and Sholokhov won over a mile at two before going on to excel over middle distances at three.” Old Persian becomes the first son of Dubawi to stand as a National Hunt stallion in Ireland, although Poet’s Word, Dubawi’s paternal grandson via Poet’s Voice, is now in his second season at Boardsmill Stud. “Dubawi might be a little different,” says Cashman, “but don’t forget his son Dodging Bullets won the Champion Chase and Hisaabaat won a couple of Grade 1 hurdles. He’s proving to be an important sire of sires in Flat breeding, and he throws all these beautiful yearlings who make fortunes at the sales. “I can’t see why he won’t work in National Hunt breeding and, besides, I remember when Liam bought Presenting, it was unheard of for Mtoto to be the sire of a jumps stallion. It shows you have to keep trying new things.” With Strong Gale, Presenting and now Sholokhov among the great jumps sires who have graced the Rathbarry and Glenview Studs stallion boxes over the years, we would do well to trust Cashman’s instincts on these matters.

BLOODSTOCK SPECIAL CHELTENHAM FESTIVAL REVIEW
DANEHILL DANCER CLAN Nancy Sexton on the rags-to-riches sire with several sons and grandsons now finding their feet in the jumps stallion ranks
D
ANEHILL, bar the odd exception, has never gained much of a foothold within jumps breeding. Several of his more stamina-oriented sons have stood with success under a jumps banner, notably Ascot Gold Cup winner Westerner, who retired directly to Coolmore’s National Hunt division, and Champs Elysees, a Classic sire on the Flat who died not long after his reinvention as a dual-purpose stallion at Castlehyde Stud. Yet, for the most part, Danehill and his descendants have remained the domain of the commercial Flat breeder, as to be expected given the line’s propensity for two-year-old talent and a general physicality that lends itself to fast-ground speed. There is, however, an unlikely source of Danehill jumps talent emerging in his rags-to-riches son Danehill Dancer. One of numerous fast and precocious sons of his sire, it was Danehill Dancer’s ability to throw to type that originally got him off the ground as a Ir4,000gns stallion. But, over time, he also began to sire horses capable of staying further than he did with greater regularity, most likely in response to the increased numbers of Classic-type mares who headed his way as his reputation grew. Add in his progeny’s ability to cope with softer conditions and their honest demeanours and perhaps it is not so surprising that several of his sons and grandsons are now finding their feet as jumps stallions. Chief among them is the much-missed Jeremy, whose strong showing at the Cheltenham Festival provided further cause to lament his early death. Jeremy, a flashy grandson of Wind In Her Hair and therefore related to Deep Impact, was a seven-furlong specialist who stretched out to a mile in later life, notably when successful in the Sandown Mile. He was retired to the Irish National Stud where, viewed as a commercial proposition likely to impart his share of pace, he was duly well supported. Jeremy has had his moments as a Flat sire thanks to Success Days and Kool Kompany among others. Even so, it is notable how
swiftly Garryrichard Stud struck to add the stallion to its roster; Jeremy headed to County Wexford for the 2013 season just as his first crop turned four and not long after was represented by the runaway Triumph Hurdle winner Our Conor, thereby setting the seal on his reputation as a young jumps sire of note. Breeders between them sent Jeremy a total of 467 mares over the course of the 2013 and 2014 seasons. Yet, sadly, no sooner had his worth as a jumps sire been truly appreciated, than he was dead. Aged only 11 at the time, he sustained an injury at exercise that necessitated surgery, only for him to break bones in a carpal joint while in recovery that left no option besides euthanasia. The fruits of those two seasons at Garryrichard were on real show during the festival, with the stallion supplying four winners including three at Grade 1 level. A double on the opening day was secured by Appreciate It, who ran away with the Supreme Novices’ Hurdle, and Black Tears, who wore down Concertista to snatch the Close Brothers Mares’ Hurdle. The following day, Sir Gerhard (below) maintained his unbeaten record in the Champion Bumper, before Belfast Banter closed the quartet with a 33-1 victory in Friday’s County Hurdle. Jeremy is not the first son of Danehill Dancer to taste success over jumps. Where Or When, a dismal stallion on the Flat, fared better in the winter game as the sire of Tolworth Hurdle winner Melodic Rendezvous, while Fast Company hit the festival scoresheet in 2019 when Band Of Outlaws struck in the Fred Winter Juvenile Handicap Hurdle. However, Jeremy is the first one to succeed on a major scale, something which naturally whets the appetite for the prospects of his only son at stud, Success Days, in addition to the array of other
‘Success Days has a similar profile to his sire Jeremy’
jumps-oriented Danehill Dancer sons coming through. Success Days certainly owns the attributes to become successful. Based at Kilbarry Lodge Stud in County Waterford at a fee of €2,000, he retired for the 2020 season having won six races – four at Pattern level – for Ken Condon, including the York Stakes. “It’s a great sire line but how many of them have a damline like Jeremy, as a grandson of Wind In Her Hair?” says Con O’Keeffe of Kilbarry Lodge Stud. “Success Days has a similar profile to his sire Jeremy. He ran to the same official rating of 117, both liked soft ground, and he’s a similar size with a good temperament. He was a sound, tough horse
who raced until he was six, and was best over ten furlongs. And he has a good French female line, being related to [Group 1 winner] Execute and [Group 2 winner] Tot Ou Tard, both of whom are sires in France.” Meanwhile, Garryrichard Stud has understandably returned to the Danehill Dancer well, as the base of Group 1 winner Hillstar.
H
ILLSTAR is an interesting option for jumps breeders as a two-year-old winner who went on to land the King Edward VII Stakes and run third in the King George at three. A typical Sir Michael Stoute improver thereafter and sound to go with it, he also landed a Group 1 win in the Canadian International at four. Added to that, he is the elder half-brother to Prince of
Wales’s Stakes winner Crystal Ocean, another whose talent and tough constitution is standing him in good stead in his fledgling stud career under Coolmore’s National Hunt banner. For his part, Hillstar has covered good-sized books throughout (rising to 119 last season), which suggests that breeders like what they see from his young stock. His first crop are four-year-olds. At Coolmore’s Castlehyde Stud, St Leger and Racing Post Trophy winner Kingston Hill has made the switch to full-time jumps sire and a major uptick in popularity has followed; after siring 150 foals in his first two crops, he has covered close to 600 mares in the past three seasons and has had jumps-bred foals sell for up to €72,000. Nor will the productive winter enjoyed by his sire Mastercraftsman have passed breeders by – with the earners
of £220,000 to his name led by Tolworth Hurdle winner Metier, Mastercraftsman sits among the season’s top 25 active jump sires. His sons at stud also include LM Stallions’ Group 3 winner Master Carpenter. In Boardsmill Stud’s new addition Sumbal, there is the option of a Group 2-winning representative out of a mare by Linamix – long regarded as a positive influence in this sphere.
‘I saw him in France two years ago and liked him. He stands 16.1½ hands high and he’s correct with a good walk’ John Flood speaks highly of Sumbal

Bravemansgame His six-length success in the Prix Greffulhe was the culmination of a three-race winning streak for Francis Graffard and preceded a closing fifth in the Prix du Jockey Club and runner-up effort in the Prix d’Harcourt. He joins Boardsmill at a fee of €2,500 following seasons at Haras de Grandcamp and Anshoon Stud. Throughout that time, however, the stud always had an eye on the horse as a potential recruit, as Boardsmill’s John Flood explains. “I saw him in France two years ago and liked him,” he says. “He stands 16.1½ hands high and he’s correct with a good walk. There was obviously the Danehill Dancer aspect to him, with Jeremy going so well, and so I kept an eye on him. “I’ve seen half a dozen of his foals in France and was impressed. His first book was
split about 50-50 between Flat and jumps mares, so he’ll have some representation on the Flat.” He adds: “He’s been well received this year. Everyone who has seen him likes him and plenty of prominent breeders are using him.”
N
OT to be outdone, the British jumps stallion ranks has gained its own son of Danehill Dancer in Planteur. Purchased by Simon Davies to stand with Roisin Close at Chapel Stud in Worcestershire last summer, the Prix Ganay winner is a stakes producer under both codes from his time at Haras de Bouquetot; high-class stayer Trueshan is the headline act of his runners on the Flat, while the Italian Group 2-winning jumper Edidindo and last year’s Prix Wild Risk winner Henry
Brulard are among his early jumpers of note. He is set to be well supported by his new owner and, at a fee of £3,000, should garner plenty of outside attention as well. Overall, the festival once again illustrated just how reliant jumps breeding is on the Sadler’s Wells sire line, which ended the week as the source of 12 winners overall. The Monsun clan, so ably represented by the likes of Getaway and Shirocco, continues to be put forward as a viable and commercial alternative, and no doubt its supporters will have been buoyed by the early results of his son Maxios, who hit the scoresheet with Triumph Hurdle winner Quilixios. Nevertheless, it would be desirable to see other lines of a similarly recent era thrive and, in the unlikely form of Danehill Dancer, one may have just been found.

HAT 13 of the 28 winners at Cheltenham last week were Irish point-to-point graduates was one of the elements in the discussions around the Irish domination of the festival, and has been expertly expanded upon by colleague James Thomas in a Bloodstock Big Read to look forward to. James’s research has separately found that the average price of a Cheltenham Festival winner between 2012 and this year was

£74,220, with the 2021 class weighing in at an above-average £96,625, though that was down on 2020’s £113,290. Well, yes. And there’s probably only one place to start, and that’s with Stayers’ Hurdle hero Flooring Porter. By Ascot Gold Cup legend and now Coolmore sire Yeats, for whom he was one of four festival winners last week, and out of Sean Murphy’s Revoque mare Lillymile, he was initially picked out as a

He was later led out unsold at the 2018 Land Rover sale, but when his current owners spotted a Facebook advert, they took a chance for a reported €40,000, and what a decision it has proven to be. buys a very cheap store, so it’s a bit of a fairytale really – it just goes to show that dreams can still happen.” Also in dreamland were connections of Minella Indo, another bought for well under the average cost of the winners this season but who took out the most valuable and prestigious prize of the week when landing the Gold Cup. Like Flooring Porter, the son of Beat Hollow out of the Lalor family’s Supreme Leader mare Carrigeen Lily was also a foal purchase, in his case from Tattersalls Ireland in 2013 for €24,000 to John Nallen, having been consigned by Rathkenty Stud. Nallen trained him to win a point-to-point at the foundation stone that is Dromahane, before
he was sold privately into Henry de Bromhead’s yard. He runs now in the silks of Barry Maloney. For Nallen, it was love at first sight when he saw him in his box at Fairyhouse, as he told Martin Stevens last year. “He had a really good presence to him, he was just the real deal,” he recalled. “He’ll do me, I thought, and it was only after I’d done the bidding that someone pointed out to me that he was the last foal out of a 22-year-old mare.” It was far from plain sailing with Minella Indo as a youngster but he has matured to become the real deal and at Cheltenham was taking his earnings to £498,038. Like Flooring Porter, he now has six victories under rules to his name.

A key theme of last week was mares. They are guaranteed to win three of the races of course, but there were five other mares on the roll of honour, notably Honeysuckle in the Champion Hurdle and Put The Kettle On in the Champion Chase. Put The Kettle On, by Stowaway out of Quest For Fame mare Name For Fame, was offered by breeder Butlersgrove Stud as a three-year-old store at the Goffs Land Rover sale in 2017, when she was snapped up for €22,000 by Keith Phelan. The now seven-year-old has proven a dream to own, winning an impressive nine of her 16 runs and, fortunately for the One For Luck Racing Syndicate, has taken a particular liking to

Cheltenham, where she has won four times. Having got the better of geldings in the Arkle last year, she chinned them again in the two-mile chasing crown last week to seal the middle leg of De Bromhead’s dazzling championship treble. The owners are Phelan and the Dermody family, with John Dermody explaining that the mare’s name comes from something his late father used to say – frequently! He said: “When dad was older he wasn’t working much on the farm and anytime mam would be coming home he’d say, ‘Lads, put the kettle on!’” Put The Kettle On has now steamed to earnings of £395,382, with the promise of more to come.
