KEENELAND SEPTEMBER YEARLING SALE
All set for the biggest show in town
W
ELCOME to the daddy of all yearling sales. A whopping 4,644 were catalogued for the Keeneland September Yearling Sale, to be held from September 9 to 22. This year the format of Books 1 and 2 have been tweaked again. In 2018 Book 1 was held over four days and comprised 989 hips, whereas this time it’s three days and 569 offerings. Twelve months ago Book 2 was held
on the first Saturday and Sunday of the sale, but this time it’s the Friday and Saturday and, as with Book 1, has a trimmed-down number of yearlings for sale, at 730, against 826 in 2018. While the Book 1 and Book 2 numbers have been reduced to give buyers more time to inspect potential purchases, the number of Keeneland graduates to have won Grade 1s this year is up on the same stage of 2018 – well over 30, and counting, of this year’s top-level contests have fallen
to Keeneland September Yearling horses. Justify was the poster boy in 2018, but while another Triple Crown hero would have been asking too much, the Preakness (War Of Will) and Belmont (Sir Winston) were taken out by Keeneland old boys this year, while both Pegasus World Cup contests fell to Keeneland alumni in City Of Light (dirt) and Bricks And Mortar (turf). More recently, the Whitney Stakes was won by 2016 Keeneland buy
– and a fantastic one at that at $170,000 – McKinzie, who trainer Bob Baffert considers the best horse in the US, although Bricks And Mortars’ connections might have something to say about that. Dreams of recruiting a top-flight flyer extend beyond the confines of North America, however, as Roaring Lion, Hawkbill and Mr Melody have shown in Europe and Japan within the past year, and the Keeneland sales grounds will again have a united
nations feel to it, with potential buyers having jetted in from all corners. All that they, and you, need to know ahead of the frenzy are contained in these pages. Once the action is under way, racingpost.com/ bloodstock and the Racing Post newspaper will keep you informed. Keeneland will have live coverage of the entire sale at keeneland.com. Exciting young sires and big-hitters well represented
A
SPENDING splurge 12 months ago resulted in no fewer than 26 yearlings at Book 1 selling for $1 million or more, with dollars and bids reminiscent of the Keeneland of a decade or so earlier, writes Andrew Scutts. That was twice as many million-dollar-plus yearlings as sold in 2017, and it will be interesting to see what September 9-11 brings this year, with the Book 1 session dropping to three days from four. As you would imagine from a sale that catalogued 2,332 males and 2,312 fillies, the 231 sires represented amount to a ‘who’s who’ of established and first-season stallions. American Pharoah, Candy Ride, Curlin, Distorted Humor, Dubawi, Galileo, Giant’s Causeway, Into Mischief, Medaglia
D’Oro, No Nay Never, Oasis Dream, Pioneerof the Nile, Quality Road, Tapit, Uncle Mo and War Front are just a small selection of the more established sires – some of those more established than others, of course. While from among the exciting crop of those with their first yearlings in the sale are the likes of Air Force Blue, California Chrome, Frosted, Nyquist, Runhappy, Speightster, The Gurkha and Vancouver. In terms of numbers, American Pharoah, who stands at Coolmore, just shades catalogued Book 1 hips with 42 from Curlin (Hill ‘n’ Dale, 41) and Medaglia D’Oro (Darley, 39).
Nyquist: his first yearlings will be on offer at Keeneland
It was War Front who had the honour of being sire of last year’s sale-topper, the colt out of Smart Strike mare Streaming consigned by Hill ‘n’ Dale who was knocked down to MV Magnier for $2.4m. Named St James’s Square, and in training with Aidan O’Brien, he is yet to run. War Front also hit the top-ten board with a filly out of Forestry mare Seeking Gabrielle consigned by Hinkle Farms, who fetched $1.75m to a bid from Godolphin. American Pharoah also figured twice on last year’s leaderboard, his colt out of Indian Charlie mare Kindle consigned by Woods Edge Farm going for $2.2m to Godolphin, while the other yearling to break the $2m barrier 12 months ago was the Medaglia D’Oro colt out of Exotic Bloom consigned by Taylor Made who took the eye of Phoenix Thoroughbreds, to the extent they went to $2.1m to secure him.

KEENELAND SEPTEMBER YEARLING SALE Beholder
Henny Hughes-Leslie’s Lady (Tricky Creek) A bid of $180,000 can get you an awful lot of bang for your buck, as B Wayne Hughes found out at the 2011 September Sale. The Spendthrift Farm owner parted with that sum for hip 962 from the Clarkland Farm draft, a bay filly by Henny Hughes. That filly turned out to be none other than Beholder, the four-time champion and 11-time Grade 1 winner. Sent into training with Richard Mandella, Beholder displayed an abundance of early talent that reached a peak with success in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies, the first of her top-level victories. The filly was kept in training until the end of her six-year-old season when she signed off with a fitting win in the Breeders’ Cup Distaff, her second success in that particular contest, in which she got the better of another great mare in Songbird in a pulsating finish. By the time Beholder retired to the paddocks she had amassed earnings of $6,156,600, a monumental haul given her sale price, and she had been crowned a champion at two, three, five and six.
Scat Daddy
Johannesburg-Love Style (Mr Prospector) Trainer Todd Pletcher signed for just one horse during the 2005 September Sale, but his purchase went on to leave an indelible mark on the very breed itself. A bid of $250,000 was required to secure the Johannesburg colt out of Love Style consigned by Hunter Valley Farm as hip 270, who went on to be known as Scat Daddy. The colt ran in the colours of owner James Scatuorchio and wasted little time proving his talent, winning the Grade 1 Champagne Stakes and the Sanford Stakes during a productive two-year-old campaign. He returned at three to add the Fountain of Youth Stakes and the Florida Derby to his top-class racing résumé. However, it was when Scat Daddy retired to Coolmore’s Ashford Stud in 2008 that things began to get really interesting. He sired a galaxy of stars, including major talents including Caravaggio, Daddy Long Legs, Lady Aurelia and No Nay Never. He sadly passed away in late 2015 but not before he sired his magnum opus Justify, who etched his name into the history books when sweeping the 2018 Triple Crown. With a burgeoning band of sire sons, Scat Daddy has left a legacy that looks set to run and run.

Zenyatta
Street Cry-Vertigineux (Kris S) One of the most talented mares to ever set foot on a racetrack, with a record of 19 straight victories including 13 at the highest level, Jerry and Ann Moss needed a bid of just $60,000 to acquire Zenyatta from the 2005 September Sale. Admittedly the daughter of Street Cry was suffering with a bout of ringworm at the time, which perhaps concealed her true majesty, but how other bidders must rue not being more forgiving when hip 703 entered the ring as part of the Winter Quarter Farm draft. Sent into training with John Shirreffs, Zenyatta proved to be something out of the ordinary as she swept through four seasons in training, winning major prizes, including the 2009 Breeders’ Cup Classic, with her customary surge up the stretch. The mighty mare was famously denied the perfect send off when she lost her unbeaten status by a fast-diminishing head as she attempted to retain her Breeders’ Cup Classic crown in 2010. Despite that gut-wrenching reversal behind Blame, she retired having amassed a huge $7,304,580 in prize-money earnings, claimed countless awards and can now boast of a life-size statue at Santa Anita Park. She will always be remembered as one of the true queens of the sport of kings.

Scat Daddy-Stage Magic (Ghostzapper) After the untimely passing of Scat Daddy in December 2015, demand for his progeny at the sales skyrocketed. During the 2016 September Yearling Sale the China Horse Club and Maverick Racing partnered at $500,000 to secure one of Scat Daddy’s sons out of the Ghostzapper mare Stage Magic. It proved to be money well spent. That colt was, of course, Justify, who memorably swept the 2018 Triple Crown. The Bob Baffert-trained chestnut powerhouse not only made history by landing the Kentucky Derby, Preakness Stakes and the Belmont Stakes, but also laid to rest the ‘Curse of Apollo’ by winning the Triple Crown despite not having raced at two. Justify followed in the footsteps of the great Seattle Slew by maintaining an unbeaten record through a Triple Crown-winning run, and as the Belmont proved to be his final outing, he became the only undefeated Triple Crown winner in history. Speculation was rife as to who would stand Justify during his breeding career long before he won the Belmont, with Coolmore being the name on almost everyone’s lips. In September 2018, almost two years to the day since the horse went through the Keeneland ring, part-owner WinStar Farm confirmed the worst-kept secret in racing, that Justify would begin his stallion career at Coolmore’s Ashford Stud alongside the 12th winner of the Triple Crown, American Pharoah. While spending $500,000 on a yearling is a sizeable risk, in this instance it paid off in spectacular fashion, as the deal to secure the breeding rights to Justify was reported in some quarters to be worth as much as $75 million.
MR MELODY defeated 17 horses winning the G1 Takamatsunomiya Kinen in Japan
Roaring Lion
Kitten’s Joy-Vionnet (Street Sense) When David Redvers and his assistant Hannah Wall began combing the Keeneland barns ahead of the 2016 September Sale, even their wildest dreams would have struggled to foretell the monster talent they were soon to find. Having unearthed the son of Kitten’s Joy, who was consigned by Taylor Made Sales Agency, from among the 4,479 hips that September, Redvers set out to secure the colt on behalf of Qatar Racing. He has admitted to being “stunned” that the gavel came down in his favour at only $160,000, particularly as the average for that session was $319,730. It is a price that has repeatedly been made to look a bargain of incredibly rare proportions. A top-class juvenile, Roaring Lion was shipped to Britain and sent to John Gosden and duly stormed through his first three races without tasting defeat, before losing out by just a neck to subsequent 2,000 Guineas winner Saxon Warrior in the Group 1 Racing Post Trophy. He took a couple of runs to find his feet at three, but when he did the results were devastating. He went on to land four consecutive Group 1s, beginning with the Coral-Eclipse and taking in the Juddmonte International, the Irish Champion Stakes and the Queen Elizabeth II Stakes, before retiring as a genuine champion. He retired to Tweenhills Farm & Stud where he covered a glittering debut book of mares that looks set to ensure his influence won’t be confined to his own racing career.

G
ULFSTREAM PARK on January 26 this year provided the perfect springboard for Keeneland to showcase its September Yearling Sale graduates as the Pegasus World Cup dirt and turf races went the way of 2015 hips. Turf winner Bricks And Mortar was a Book 1 buy four years ago, the son of Giant’s Causeway out of Beyond The Waves selling to Oaks Bluff Partners for $200,000, having been consigned by Stone Farm and bred by George Strawbridge. Six days later, on the first day of Book 3, City Of Light, who followed Arrogate and
Gun Runner in winning the Pegasus World Cup on the dirt, went through the ring and did rather better. Indeed, the son of Quality Road out of Paris Notion bred by Noreen O’Neill’s Ann Marie Farm topped the session at $710,000, the successful bid coming from Mark Reid, managing partner for Walnut Green. It was the highest price paid at Book 3 for eight years. “I liked everything about him,” Reid told reporters. “He’s a beautifully framed colt who we think will mature.” Breeder O’Neill, for whom the colt was the farm’s highest-priced sale at auction, admitted: “I wasn’t expecting
that, we’re just dumbfounded. The horse was beautiful. We handled him right. He did everything right, never got excited. I’m glad he went to a good home. I really can’t believe it, I’m just so happy.” Those who bought City Of Light had reason to be happy too, for he would go on to secure six of his 11 starts, including four Grade 1s, highlighted by a dazzling five-and-three-quarter-length swansong success in the rain in Florida at the end of January. Running for Mr and Mrs William K Warren jnr, and trained by Michael McCarthy, he earned $5,662,600 in prize-money. City Of Light headed off into
the sunset to begin a stallion career with Lane’s End, who were the vendors four years earlier when he sold at Keeneland. As for Bricks And Mortar, he boasts an even better strike-rate having now won ten of his 12 races, four at Grade 1 level, and in contrast to City Of Light, Pegasus day at Gulfstream Park was where his career took off. Trained by Chad Brown and owned by Klaravich Stables and William H Lawrence, Bricks And Mortar has blossomed, going on to win a Grade 2 at Fair Grounds, the Grade 1 Turf Classic at Churchill Downs, Grade 1 Manhattan Stakes at
Belmont Park and Grade 1 Arlington Million at Arlington Park. He has already amassed $4,885,650 in earnings, with the promise of more to come, and caught the eye of Teruya Yoshida’s Shadai Farm, which has purchased the breeding rights. Brown said after the Manhattan Stakes success: “[Bloodstock agent] Mike Ryan and I bought him as a yearling and Mike does all the scouting for us. Stonestreet broke the horse and they rehabbed him every time he had an injury. “Ian Brennan and his staff have done a remarkable job. There was one point I didn’t

KEENELAND SEPTEMBER YEARLING SALE
‘He’s a big, good-looking individual, all quality and a pleasure to be around. He’s a very straightforward and uncomplicated horse’ Martin Stevens talks to Ashford Stud’s Dermot Ryan about star stallion Uncle Mo
A
N IMPORTANT consideration when studying yearling sale catalogues is the ‘bounce factor’ among the sires represented; that is, who served improved books of mares in 2017 on the back of progeny success on the racecourse and now have better bred youngsters available to buy. One striking example this year is Uncle Mo, the son of Indian Charlie who was American’s champion juvenile of 2010 after recording wide-margin victories in the Champagne Stakes and Breeders’ Cup Juvenile, and came back at three to win the Kelso Handicap and be beaten just a nose in the King’s Bishop Stakes. His debut two-year-olds hit the track in 2015, and he made a dazzling first impression by supplying three-time Grade 1 winner and champion juvenile Nyquist, Alcibiades heroine Gomo, Grade 3 scorer Sanford, and Forevamo, Lost Raven, Mo Tom and Uncle Brennie, all successful at Listed level. Unsurprisingly, his fee at Ashford Stud in Kentucky was trebled to $75,000 for the 2016 covering season and the resultant foals, now aged two, include the North American maiden winners Dixie Mo, Memorable, Mo Mystery and Tick Tack Mo, as well as Serein, who has won on her sole start in Japan. Even better was to come on
the racecourse as Uncle Mo’s first crop turned three. Nyquist landed the Florida Derby and became only the second horse to complete the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile-Kentucky Derby double; Outwork took the Wood Memorial; Laoban and Mokat struck at Grade 2 level; and Auntie Joy, Front Pocket Money and Unbridled Mo scored in Grade 3s. The sire’s next generation of two-year-old runners, meanwhile, included the impressive Grade 2 Remsen Stakes winner Mo Town. Uncle Mo’s fee was consequently doubled to $150,000 in 2017 and he covered a bumper book of 204 mares that year, and it is the resultant offspring who are coming up for auction as yearlings this year. Five sold for $300,000 or more at Saratoga in August, headed by a filly out of dual Grade 1 winner Artemis Agrotera sold to White Birch Farm for $500,000 and a brother to Jim Dandy Stakes scorer Laoban knocked down to Lael Stable for $475,000. There is no shortage of choice of Uncle Mo yearlings at Keeneland in September, with 86 on offer. Reflecting on Uncle Mo’s stallion career, Ashford Stud manager Dermot Ryan says: “Ever since his first crop hit the racetrack he’s been shattering records. The total earnings of his two-year-olds in his freshman year was an all-time record that no other sire has got close to in the meantime. “Uncle Mo’s massive total of 25 stakes winners from his first crop is also an all-time record; he raced in the colours of Mike Repole, who got him off to a great start with his first Grade 1 winner in Outwork. “It’s amazing to think that the horse is only 11 years old and has already sired six Grade 1 winners on dirt, turf and synthetic.” Asked what he thinks the
secret of Uncle Mo’s success as a stallion is, Ryan replies: “He’s a big, good-looking individual, all quality and a pleasure to be around. He’s a very straightforward and uncomplicated horse, expertly handled by his groom Renee, who has looked after him since he came to Ashford. “As well as being so good-looking, Uncle Mo was a seriously talented racehorse. Breeders identified this and have been extremely supportive of him throughout his career.” Ryan reports that Uncle Mo’s “phenomenal” book in 2017 included the brilliant racemare Beholder, Zenyatta’s Grade 1-winning half-sister Balance and Starlet Stakes scorer Diplomat Lady, as well as Miss Macy Sue, the dam of Liam’s Map and Not This Time, and Mythical Bride, the dam of Vino Rosso.
S
INCE that stunning sophomore season in 2016, Uncle Mo’s offspring Dream Tree, Mo Town and Unbridled Mo have also won Grade 1 contests, and this year Epical, Life’s A Parlay, Miss Mo Mentum and Moon Colony have delivered Graded stakes victories. In all, with his oldest crop aged six, the stallion is credited with 25 Pattern winners and another 25 Listed winners, with 84 stakes performers in total (up to mid-August). That has been achieved mainly by his first four crops who were bred off fees ranging from $25,000 to $35,000. Strong support for Uncle Mo naturally continued to this year’s covering season, when he stood at $125,000. Among the mares he was sent were Circle Of Life and Dream Of Summer, Grade 1 winners themselves and dams of Grade 1 winners Circular Quay and Creative Cause; further Grade 1 scorers Heavenly Love
and Intangaroo; and the dams of Bricks And Mortar, Lines Of Battle, Stormy Liberal, Sweet Loretta and World Of Trouble. With that huge draft of yearlings on offer at Keeneland, and agents, owners and trainers from all around the world set to converge on the sale on the lookout for future stars – not just on dirt but also on turf and synthetics in a multitude of jurisdictions – it is worth pointing out that Uncle Mo has already hinted strongly that he is an all-rounder when it comes to surface. His progeny Auntie Joy, Epical, Forty Under, Hot Springs, Mokat, Moon Colony, Mo Town and Ultra Brat have all won Pattern contests on turf in America, while his shuttle trips to Coolmore in Australia have yielded the Group 2-winning sprinter Man From Uncle. Uncle Mo has not had significant representation in Europe yet, but his pedigree contains plenty of comfort for anyone worrying, for whatever reason, that he would not be as effective on the other side of the Atlantic. His sire Indian Charlie is by In Excess, winner of the King Charles II Stakes at Newmarket for Bill O’Gorman and later Grade 1-placed in the US. In Excess, in turn a son of Prix Morny and Poule d’Essai des Poulains victor Siberian Express, also sired the French Classic winner Musical Chimes. For good measure, Uncle Mo’s half-sister by War Front, Could It Be Love, ran second in the Irish 1,000 Guineas last year, while damsire Arch was responsible for talented European turf performers such as Arch Swing, Les Arcs and Nyaleti.
Uncle Mo, below, and taking a stroll at Ashford Stud in Kentucky
There is, though, a good chance that European racegoers will start to see more of Uncle Mo’s stock race locally as breeders appear to have targeted the sire as an outcross for some mares carrying Sadler’s Wells blood.
T
HAT much is apparent from the pedigrees of several yearlings at Keeneland, including Blandford Stud’s filly out of Pretty Polly Stakes heroine Diamondsandrubies, a daughter of Fastnet Rock out of Sadler’s Wells’ Group 1-winning daughter Quarter Moon, and the Taylor Made-consigned filly out of Grade 1 winner and dual
Guineas runner-up Together, a Galileo three-parts sister to Jan Vermeer who has already produced stakes performers Battle Of Jericho and Earring to War Front and Dansili. Another Uncle Mo at Keeneland with an intriguing international pedigree is Eaton Sales’ colt out of Australian Thousand Guineas heroine Irish Lights, a daughter of Fastnet Rock who has produced the Group 1 Golden Rose second Omei Sword. If the improved pedigrees of the Uncle Mo yearlings and enhanced demand for them translate into even better racecourse results, then the sire might just go on to become one of the modern greats.

KEENELAND SEPTEMBER YEARLING SALE
‘When breeders came to see Runhappy the horse sold himself and was booked full within the first month of him being at Claiborne’ Nancy Sexton speaks to Walker Hancock of Claiborne Farm about its exciting stallion line-up and 2019 draft
T
HE very definition of speed manifested itself in the form of Runhappy back in 2015. While American Pharoah was thundering through his iconic Triple Crown campaign, a similar aura of invincibility was evolving around his contemporary, a horse blessed with blistering pace and the ability to carry it to multiple stakes records. Few horses came close to challenging Runhappy as he racked up his sequence of high-flying wins in the colours of James McIngvale. There was that first leap into Grade 1 company in the King’s Bishop Stakes at Saratoga, in which he “broke from the gate like a monster” – in the words of The Saratoga Special’s Sean Clancy – and stayed there, shrugging off his foes to win by four lengths in a stakes record of 1min 20.54sec. From there, Runhappy won the Grade 3 Stoll Keenon Ogden Phoenix Stakes at Keeneland to set him up for the Breeders’ Cup Sprint, again back at Keeneland, where he did not disappoint, out-kicking Private Zone to win in another track record. A wide-margin victory in the Grade 1 Malibu Stakes at Santa Anita Park crowned an exceptional championship season of six wins, three of them at Grade 1 level, in three
different states. All the while he raced medication free, almost unheard of nowadays in American competition. Such a résumé sets an incredibly high bar for Runhappy to match at stud, while making him one of the most exciting young first-crop sires of 2019. He retired to Claiborne in 2017 as the most accomplished son of Super Saver to stud and has been consistently popular since then at a fee of $25,000. Now it is crunch time as his first crop of yearlings come under the microscope at auction – and so far the omens are good. “He was an extremely easy sell,” says Walker Hancock, president of Claiborne Farm. “When breeders came to see him at the farm the horse sold himself and he was booked full within the first month of him being at Claiborne. “Every breeder had heard of Runhappy and there was a lot of interest in him before he came to stud based on his performance at the track.” Claiborne’s storied past is one of the most respected in the industry. The stallion cemetery is testament to the history that seeps through the farm, celebrating as it does the time that Nasrullah, Bold Ruler, Secretariat, Buckpasser, Nijinsky, Mr Prospector and Danzig each spent on its roster. And of course today the farm remains at the top of its game through the deeds of War Front, himself in the midst of another memorable season as the sire of two top dirt talents in War Of Will and Omaha Beach. Time will tell whether Runhappy, who occupies the same stall as Bold Ruler and Secretariat, can join that pantheon of Claiborne giants, but he is in a position where lack of opportunity can never be an excuse, particularly as he also continues to have the backing of McIngvale.
‘Mattress Mack’ McIngvale owns and operates the Houston-based Gallery Furniture retail chain and is therefore well placed to appreciate the importance of savvy marketing. Between them, Runhappy’s connections have launched a series of initiatives to promote the stallion, including a $100,000 bonus to the owner of any Runhappy two-year-old who wins a maiden special weight during the 2020 summer meets at Saratoga, Del Mar and Kentucky Downs. “Mr McIngvale has been a huge supporter of his horse and believes in the fundamentals of advertising to sell a product,” explains Hancock. “He sees this as a huge opportunity to continue to promote Runhappy – and it has clearly worked as we’re talking about it right now! “Many owners and breeders have mentioned the bonus as helping them sell their horses as well as looking to buy them in the sales ring to win the bonus.”
T
HERE was certainly plenty of chat about the bonus on the sale grounds in Saratoga recently. Having said that, however, momentum had already been building behind the horse prior to the official launch. Reports on his first foals were positive out of last year’s breeding-stock sales, where his 11 six-figure representatives led to an average of $148,667. And that has carried over into this year, which has already featured a $650,000 yearling out of Always In My Heart sold to Cromwell Bloodstock at Saratoga – Runhappy ended Fasig-Tipton’s Saratoga Sale as the leading freshman sire by average on a figure of $395,000.
“He’s passing down his stunning good looks and athleticism,” says Hancock. “His progeny are very balanced, racy and have good minds just like their father. “He truly is stamping his offspring in a uniform fashion, much like we’ve seen War Front and Blame do here at the farm.” He adds: “We have three very solid Runhappys we’re offering at Keeneland. One is so nice we decided to place him in Book 1. He’s a standout physical and I believe many foreign and domestic buyers will see him and he’ll set the standard and hopefully gain some early momentum for Runhappy to have a big September sale. “Our other two are very nice as well and fit the mould for a typical Runhappy. We’re excited to offer all three prospects and believe they’ll be very well received.” The Book 1 colt in question is hip 43, the second foal out of Rapid Repair, a winning Arch half-sister to Grade 3 winner Kitten’s Point. He is joined in the Claiborne draft by hip 596, a half-brother to four stakes scorers including the Grade 2-winning and Grade 1-placed filly Well Monied, and hip 1428, a daughter of Listed winner Tiz The Argument. In all, Runhappy has 54 yearlings to represent him in the sale, among them the half-siblings to Grade 1 winners Fault (1107; colt from James B Keogh) and Hunter O’Riley (1301; filly from Elm Tree Farm), as well as a daughter of top two-year-old Meadow Breeze (535) from Betz Thoroughbreds. As was his style on the track, it has to be said that Runhappy is well placed to now also hit the gates running at stud.
High hopes for fellow young sire Ironicus HOPES are also running high at Claiborne over the prospects of the farm’s other young stallion, Ironicus. Trained by Shug McGaughey, Ironicus won six races, including the Grade 2 Dixie Stakes, and was runner-up in the Grade 1 Shadwell Turf Mile and Manhattan Stakes, writes Nancy Sexton. Although the Stuart Janney homebred (below) does not have the numerical firepower of some of his contemporaries (he has 33 first-crop yearlings on the ground bred off a fee of $7,500), he was a record-setting millionaire and is a son of Distorted Humor from a successful family, giving plenty to recommend him. “He has the pedigree and looks to certainly be a great stallion,” Walker Hancock says of the attractive grey who is one of six stakes winners out of Janney’s remarkable mare Meghan’s Joy. “Sons of Distorted Humor are doing very well at stud and with his pedigree he’ll have a great chance to make it. “Unfortunately he’s going to have to do it the hard way. He hasn’t had the luxury
of huge books to appeal to commercial buyers, but if a few come out running he’ll have a great chance to be a sire here for many years to come.” He adds: “We’re keeping a couple to race ourselves to ensure they end up in the right hands with good trainers. We’re offering one who I believe will be our Book 5 topper [hip 3320; a colt out of the Arch mare Hurrah]. He’s a strong, athletic colt and looks like he’ll have a great turn of foot, much like his father possessed. There are only seven in the sale so it will be interesting to see how they’ll be received.”

War Front colt in Book 1 ‘looks like he’ll fit the European style of racing’ FOR the past decade War Front has reigned as a driving force behind the fortunes of Keeneland’s September Yearling Sale, his allure intensified by his strong international appeal. Since 2014 he has accounted for 14 million-dollar yearlings and currently boasts a lifetime yearling average of approximately $360,000. And with yet another loaded draft to represent him, chances are he plays a similarly influential role at this year’s renewal. Among his draft of 34 yearlings are eight from Claiborne, five of whom are slated for Book 1. They include a colt out of the Group 3-placed Queen Nefertiti, herself a sister to The Gurkha (hip 37), and a half-brother to Grade 1 winner Force The Pass (95). “Hopefully with the success of War Of Will and Omaha Beach on dirt this year, more domestic buyers will look at War Front’s to race in the US on dirt,” says Walker Hancock. “One of the War Fronts in Book 1 is out of a sister to The Gurkha, which many Europeans will know and like. He looks like he’ll fit the European style of racing so he should be popular among international buyers.” He adds: “We also have a few nice yearlings by Curlin as well as Flatter. I think top to bottom this is the strongest Book 1 and 2 horses we’ve had in quite some time.” Claiborne’s 56-strong draft represents a fair cross spectrum of the farm’s roster. In addition to Flatter, the ever reliable First Samurai is well represented as is his son Lea, a remarkably versatile performer whose
first two-year-olds include the highly regarded Saratoga winner Vast. “No-one really expected him to have this much early success as he didn’t race until May of his three-year-old year,” says Hancock. “I know there are plenty who are expecting to debut this fall who are well regarded.” In all, the next few months promise to be an exciting time for the farm, as not only do they have the youngstock by Runhappy, Ironicus and Lea to look forward to, but also the first foals by Mastery. In addition, the Belmont Derby and Travers Stakes winner Catholic Boy is slated to join the roster for 2020. “We’re excited by our Mastery foals,” says Hancock of the unbeaten winner of the Cash Call Futurity for Bob Baffert who was booked full at 139 mares in his first season at a fee of $25,000. “Someone asked me to describe them the other day and I told them to think Candy Ride but with more athleticism and substance. With Twirling Candy having a big year, it appears Candy Ride will be a sire of sires, and we believe Mastery will be one of them.” He continues: “We’re also excited to add Catholic Boy to our roster next year. He’s a stakes winner on turf and dirt at two, three and hopefully four. Being by international sire More Than Ready, he’ll have plenty of appeal domestically and internationally. He’s the perfect size and we’re excited to add him to our stallion barn this winter.” Nancy Sexton

KEENELAND SEPTEMBER YEARLING SALE
From an idea hatched over a drink or two by four friends to a consigning colossus KEENELAND
Tom Peacock talks to Adrian Regan and Fergus Galvin of leading Keeneland vendor Hunter Valley
W
HEN four members of America’s large Irish diaspora gathered to discuss the idea of buying a farm together, none of the quartet imagined that the behemoth of Hunter Valley would emerge from a table of empty drinking vessels. In its 15 years of operation, Adrian Regan and Fergus Galvin, along with their silent partners Tony Hegarty and John Wade, have developed the business into one that sells more than 200 horses a year and regularly features among Keeneland’s leading consignors of both foals and yearlings. “I think we were all out one night and, after maybe a drink or two, we hatched this idea,” Galvin recalls. “Next morning we called everybody, ‘is everyone still on board?’, and they were, so we went looking for a farm. It just so happened there was one very conveniently located only ten minutes from Keeneland, it used to be called Golden Gate Stud, and ironically enough there was an Irish Derby winner, Zagreb, raised here back in the day.” Hegarty and Wade, who own a construction business in Chicago, helped to give Regan and Galvin a financial footing and in 2004 the old friends who were on the Irish National Stud course together set to work drumming up interest. “You could imagine how nervous we were,” says Regan. “At the time the country wasn’t exactly booming, we didn’t really start it at the best of financial times but we got lucky with a couple of pinhooks straight away and things kept going. We had confidence in ourselves that we could go and do it, but you have to have a certain amount of luck. “I’d been managing Crescent Hill for the Stiltz family. Basically I had to bring in the clients and they employed me to do that as well as manage the farm. I’d been doing three years of hard hustling and it was a continuation of what I’d been doing, except we had to make ends meet as we also paid the bills!” With Galvin also known in the trade from long stints
Despite both having spent a quarter of a century in Kentucky, the pair’s Irish accents are undiminished and they attempt to get home most years if possible, although this is something of a gruelling experience for Galvin, who has four young children. With an ever-expanding business, though, neither feels they are likely to relocate any time soon. “It’s a different game over there to here,” says Regan. “If I went home, which I don’t think will happen, I’d have to take a year out and follow someone around to realise how it’s done.”
I Fergus Galvin (left) and Adrian Regan: together with two silent partners, the Irishmen operate Hunter Valley Farm in Kentucky
at Pin Oak, Newgate and Coolmore, the pair had enough of a reputation to be able to take a decent-sized consignment to the September Yearling Sale in 2005. And it contained one particular $250,000 youngster who was to set them on the right path. “I think the very first yearling we put through the ring was Scat Daddy himself,” Galvin says. “He has sort of been our poster child of sorts, so it wasn’t a bad way to start off your initial venture into the horse business. “What he went on to accomplish [in the Champagne Stakes and Florida Derby], it certainly stuck with our name a little bit, so to speak, and we also sold [son] No
Nay Never, although he was a weanling. Those two horses in themselves are great advertisements for the farm. It’s a few moons now but it doesn’t seem that long ago.”
T
HE results kept coming through the likes of multiple Grade 1 winner and promising stallion The Factor, and Hunter Valley acquired major international clients including Qatar Racing, for whom it sold dual Oaks runner-up Secret Gesture for $3,500,000. Neither Galvin nor Regan are the types to shout their success from the rooftops, nor do they believe there to be a particular reason as to how
they have broken into the top tier. “I suppose people know that we work hard outside the barn and we represent everybody the same,” says the latter. “I think that’s been recognised and more and more people are entrusting us to sell their horses, which is really appreciated.” Galvin also explains that it helps to maintain a healthy mixture of clients. “We’ve got several pinhooking partnerships ourselves, a lot of people come in with us, and us with other people as well, we’ll take a piece, and everyone has fun doing it,” he says. “We’re maybe half pinhooks, half homebreds, and we sell for
others who just send them to us for the sales. “I guess it spreads the risk a bit, you get more people involved. There probably aren’t two horses on the farm owned the same way, but people come in and like what we do.” It helps Hunter Valley to take the rough with the smooth. “Obviously sales times can be stressful, it’s your whole year’s work on the line,” Galvin says. “You try to enjoy it but I’m not saying it’s a cakewalk by any means. You enjoy it when the hammer drops, anyway. “We’ve had so many and owned so many, it’s the bigger picture we look at really. You’re going to stub your toe along the way, but just move on.”
RONICALLY, managing a stud was not Regan’s intention when he set foot in America in the mid-1990s. “I had one of those Morrison visas, I was intending coming to do six months to qualify for the full visa, but I soon realised after half of that that I was loving it, and I knew it was going to be a longer stint,” he says. “I had in my head when I came over that I was wanting to be a trainer, but I went to Padraig and Aveen Campion at Blandford Stud, they really gave me a wide experience at everything. Padraig was pre-training and also gave me an introduction to the sales – to this day he’s one of the best men to sell a horse at the sales I’ve ever known. “I was still thinking I was going to be a trainer, but Padraig got me in touch with Eoin Harty, who was with Bob Baffert at the time. I soon realised that the hours that go into it and the chances of being the next Bob Baffert were slim. I made a decision that I had to go and try to get a stud job and go down the road that a lot of my friends were.” It is a road that has sent him in very much the right direction, particularly after that one hazy night.
‘We have a real quality Quality Road colt – I suppose I should say an outstanding one’ HUNTER VALLEY will be consigning more than 70 yearlings through the 13 sessions of Keeneland. Included among the 14 Book 1 offerings are five sons and daughters of American Pharoah, and Fergus Galvin says that they have been firmly behind the Triple Crown hero. “We’re big fans of Pharoah,” he says. “The ones we have up at the farm are all very good. They’re very athletic horses, that’s the one common thing about them. They’re great movers and he’s got off to a great start, so we’re pretty excited about those.” While reluctant to single out
individuals, Galvin gives a good mention to a Medaglia D’Oro colt (hip 453) who is a half-brother to Grade 1 Del Mar Futurity winner Klimt. Adrian Regan adds another to the shortlist. “We have a real quality Quality Road colt [566] – I suppose I should say an outstanding one,” he says. “I’d say it probably is our largest consignment for September and I think we have a strong group in each book. Even in Book 5 there are some good individuals, I know the Europeans have been staying longer and longer, and I’m really hoping they stay the
trip as we promise them quality throughout!” Galvin also voices his approval of the decision by Keeneland to abbreviate Book 1 to three days from four. “Last year there were questions a little about the format, I think quite a few people thought it was just a stretch, that there wasn’t enough quality to fill four days of Book 1,” he says. “Maybe the numbers weren’t there for four, and perhaps a few people got slightly aggravated. I think the shorter format should work. “From start to finish you’re getting different audiences, not completely
different but at stages new people come in. The high-end Europeans stay maybe Books 1 and 2, then the pinhooking-type Europeans come from the first weekend on. As long as they can stay here, they like to stay here, because there are so many horses. “When you go back into the books, with 300, 400 horses a day, they go pretty quick and that’s where the bargains are found sometimes, in the middle of a big crowd. They might be back in Book 4 or 5, but there have been some big pinhooks done to Europe at relatively modest prices.” TOM PEACOCK
