Quality all around in a magical two weeks on the Gold Coast
W Mark Scully SETTING THE SCENE
HATEVER it is you are looking for, the Magic Millions Gold Coast National Sale is the place to be during these coming weeks. Looking for a quality prospect to pinhook? Plenty of the youngsters listed in the 542-strong weanling catalogue will surely be back here in January to be offered among some of Australia’s finest yearlings. Pierro (Lonhro), Zoustar (Northern Meteor) and Redzel (Snitzel) are just some of the stars seen first at this very sale. Maybe you are in the market for breeding stock, in which case the Broodmare Sale catalogue is the place to focus the attention. Almost 1,000
lots are up for grabs and competition should be fierce, with the likes of Group 1 winners Abbey Marie (Redoute’s Choice) and Miss Cover Girl (Monashee Mountain) among a high-class offering of race fillies, breeding prospects and proven Group 1 producers. The opportunities do not stop there, with 528 yearlings catalogued to sell as May ticks over into June. Stallions represented include proven producers of quality like Fastnet Rock (Danehill), Snitzel (Redoute’s Choice), Pierro and Redoute’s Choice (Danehill), as well as emerging sires such as Spirit Of Boom (Sequalo) and Dundeel (High Chaparral). This mammoth auction concludes with the Racehorse Sale, which saw an
international buying bench generate competition that delivered a clearance rate of 97 per cent 12 months ago and is likely once again to prove among the finest opportunities to pick up a tried horse. And what better place for it all to take place than the Gold Coast? This is a backdrop against which some of the greats of the Australian turf have emerged down the years. Thrilling news stories are just waiting to be written – and it all starts here.

Steve Moran BARRY BOWDITCH INTERVIEW
T
HE Magic Millions National Sales will be the first, of course, under the direction of recently appointed managing director Barry Bowditch – and he is understandably keen to see it maintain its prominence, the auction having been buoyed by the inclusion of several outstanding mares in the National Broodmare section. “This sale has transformed into something which now has the industry globally paying significant attention to it and rightly so, given its history and that the line-up of race fillies and broodmares this year is quite extraordinary,” Bowditch says. That line-up was recently boosted by the supplementary entry of triple Group 1 winner Jameka (Myboycharlie), who completed the unprecedented double of the 2016 VRC Oaks (Gr 1, 2,500m) and the 2017 Caulfield Cup (Gr 1, 2,400m). She joins seven other Group 1 winners, including such notables as Abbey Marie (Redoute’s Choice), Silent Sedition (War Chant) and Miss Cover Girl (Monashee Mountain). The dams of a further ten Group 1 winners will also be offered at the broodmare sale, which begins on May 29 and highlights more than two weeks of selling mares, yearlings, weanlings and racehorses – under the National banner – from May 24. The broodmare auction has returned remarkable results on the track over recent years including this season via the Charge Forward (Red Ransom) mare Response, who was purchased at the sale in 2015 by Katsumi Yoshida for $1.5 million from the Newgate Stud draft carrying this season’s Golden Slipper Stakes (Gr 1, 1,200m) winning filly Estijaab (Snitzel). Other notable recent purchases at the auction include the dams of none other than Winx (Street Cry), along with high-class filly Shoals (Fastnet Rock), plus recent The Championships Group 1 winners Levendi (Pierro) and Hiyaam (High Chaparral). Bowditch, five months into his new role, believes the cornerstone of the National sales is the diversity of product which appeals to vendors and buyers across the board. He says: “We very much look forward to playing host to all of our loyal vendors and buyers, both local and international, over the two weeks of sale. The Gold Coast is always a sensational place to be and the vibe should be great this month, with the great diversity of horses and people. “The depth and diversity of this year’s catalogue will give buyers at all ends of the market massive opportunities. This is a sale for all budgets and the catalogue reflects that. “In recent years there have been so many success stories at all ends of the market – dams of the Slipper, Derby

‘The Gold Coast is a sensational place to be and the vibe should be great with the diversity of horses and people’ and Oaks winners all coming from this sale. “Our weanling sale looks again to have plenty of opportunities at all levels. The pedigrees this year look as strong as ever, as has been the support from our vendors, and we’re excited to be able to market these weanlings on their behalf. “Over the two weeks we believe there’s a horse for everyone, whether it be a weanling, broodmare, yearling or racehorse. I think we genuinely have all markets covered for quality and quantity.” The Broodmare sales will certainly create worldwide interest, with the Michael Kent trained Group 1 winner Abbey Marie being a case in point – offered as part of a strong Segenhoe Stud draft, which also includes Miss Cover Girl. Given the success of Redoute’s Choice (Danehill) mares, it is not hard to imagine the Australasian Oaks (Gr 1, 2,000m) winner Abbey Marie to be much sought after. She is a sister to ATC Australian Oaks (Gr 1, 2,400m) winner Absolutely (also trained by Kent) and her dam, Catshaan (Catrail), is a half-sister to Japanese Champion miler and multiple Group 1 winner Kinshasa No Kiseki (Fuji Kiseki). Miss Cover Girl, who won the 2016 Tattersall’s Tiara (Gr 1, 1400m), is offered in foal to Newgate’s Golden Slipper-winning stallion Capitalist (Written Tycoon). “I remember Abbey Marie as a yearling and she was a lovely, beautiful, scopey specimen and she’s developed and matured into a beautiful mare. Anybody looking for a top-class diamond, she’s the one,” says Segenhoe’s Peter O’Brien. All the indicators are
Barry Bowditch on the Gold Coast
propitious for the new man at the helm. “I’ve been in my new role now for five months and must say the transition has been smooth,” Bowditch says. “Magic Millions has had sensational yearling sales results thus far with significant increases at all sales. “The smooth transition and success in the sales ring can be mainly attributed to the team we have here at Magic Millions. Their dedication and support has been phenomenal.” The 35 year-old originally hails from Wagga Wagga and his father Barry (senior) and mother Helen have been active industry participants, principally
training, for most of their lives. The wider family includes his first cousin, the prominent South Australian jockey Joe Bowditch. Bowditch himself has not known a working life other than that of the sales and bloodstock industry. “I started at Inglis at 17, about five months after finishing year 12 at school and I left Inglis five years to the day after I started,” he recalled at the time of his appointment. “I was looking to move back to the Gold Coast, where the family had moved when I was 12, and going to Magic Millions was the obvious next step for me.” Bowditch is a great believer in ‘type’ and is confident there are plenty of good specimens on offer among the weanlings and yearlings. “At the end, the thing which really makes a race horse is his or her physical attributes. Over the years we’ve sold a raft of horses who proved themselves regardless of their background and I’m sure that will be the case again this month,” he says.

‘She’s an absolute queen’ Superstar Jameka among this year’s highlights
T
HE Magic Millions National Broodmare Sale catalogue received a huge boost with the news that former Ciaron Maher-trained triple Group 1 winner Jameka (Myboycharlie) would be offered. With her having gone on to become a top-drawer middle-distance mare, it is easy to forget that Jameka also proved herself to be a top-class two-year-old, finishing third in the Inglis 2YO Premier (RL, 1,000m) on her second start, before going on to break her maiden in the Sires’ Produce Stakes (Gr 2, 1,400m) two starts later in the autumn of her juvenile year. “We’re honoured to have been entrusted to offer Jameka at the National Broodmare Sale – she’s an absolute queen,” said Magic Millions’ Managing Director Barry Bowditch. “As a racehorse Jameka proved her class from winning a VRC Sires’ Produce Stakes at two to her barnstorming win in the Caulfield Cup. And who can forget her last run – a six-and-a-half-length demolition of Humidor and co in The BMW. “Ciaron Maher did a remarkable job with Jameka, developing her from a Group 2-winning juvenile to one of the stars of Australian racing. “We thank him and his team for giving Magic Millions the opportunity to offer their prized mare to a global audience.”

Les Young PICK OF THE BROODMARE CATALOGUE
T
HE Magic Millions National Broodmare Sale at the Gold Coast has in recent years become the best place to find the widest selection of top-quality broodmares and potential broodmares of any Australian auction. Book 1 of the 2018 sale has a truly mouth-watering array of more than 850 lots to be followed by more than 100 others in Book 2 so, if you’re in the market for a mare, you should be at the Gold Coast on May 29, 30 and 31, staying on for the book 2 offerings on June 1. Dams of such current stars as Winx (Street Cry), Trapeze Artist (Snitzel), Estijaab (Snitzel), Shoals (Fastnet Rock), Levendi (Pierro) and Sunlight (Zoustar) have all been bought at this sale but this year’s catalogue looks the strongest yet, unmatched previously except perhaps in years which featured a major stud dispersal. The book is packed with stakes-winning mares, stakes place-getters and daughters of top sires, many in foal to Australia’s leading stallions. Highlighting the best and most appealing offerings is no easy task, but the following may be helpful to potential buyers.

As a three-time Group 1 winner, namely the 2015 VRC Oaks (Gr 1, 2,500m), 2016 Caulfield Cup (Gr 1, 2,400m) and 2017 The BMW (registered as H E Tancred Stakes) (Gr 1, 2,400m), Jameka may well bring a record price for this sale but supporting her are many more stakes winners with lots on the shortlist including: Lot 606 Abbey Marie (Redoute’s Choice), Winner of the SAJC Schweppes Oaks (Gr 1, 2,000m).
