Derek O’Connor Straight to the Point

My three top picks for the future from a strong four-year-old crop

W

E’RE getting near the end of a successful autumn campaign. The standard of racing has been consistently high in the four-year-old maidens. Almost every weekend we’ve seen smart performances spread across a wide range of stables and in different parts of the country. It’s a tough job sorting out the pick of a strong crop, and you have to bear in mind the rate of future development is always difficult to assess. The reality is that some of those with the highest reputations will fall by the wayside for one reason or another. Others will be late developers who will end up surprising us all. Every regular follower of point-topoints will have names in the notebook, looking forward to the day they make it to the racecourse. I’ve picked out a few youngsters who have impressed me particularly. I’ve found it hard to narrow it down to a shortlist of three, so I’m not going to make it even more difficult by putting them in 1-2-3 order. I’m going to mention them in the order in which they appeared on the track. All three ran in October. First on the scene was Olympy De Cerisy, who ran at Loughrea on October 8. There were eight runners and only two finishers in conditions officially described as soft-to-heavy. The keen-running Jagermeister Tek set a strong pace and had a lead of about 20 lengths by the sixth fence. His lead was reduced by four out and he was headed before the second-last by Rossbridge, a horse who had run once last season. Rossbridge’s move was quickly covered by Ray Barron on the Declan Queally-trained Olympy De Cerisy and the race was settled in a few strides. The winning margin was 16 lengths. Two weeks later the Rob James-trained runner-up franked the form by winning at Ballycrystal. Olympy De Cerisy was a €10,000 purchase at the 2022 Goffs Land Rover store sale. He has a Flat pedigree, a son of Brametot, who won the French Guineas and French Derby in 2017, out of a mare by Nashwan’s half-brother Nayef. He’s an exciting horse. His trainer,

HEALY RACING

Teeshan made a major impression when dominating the four-year-old geldings maiden at Loughrea

who has had 13 winners this season at a phenomenal 57 per cent strikerate, has suggested we might see him at Leopardstown after Christmas.

‘Silent Approach didn’t race in points, but a 33-1 winner for a mare from a small pointing yard can only be good for the sport as a whole’

My second horse to follow is Teeshan, who made a winning debut for Ger Quinn at Loughanmore on October 21. This is another stable that has enjoyed a fine campaign, sending out six winners with a 35 per cent strike-rate. Teeshan is another product of the 2022 Goffs Land Rover sale, bought by Philip McBurney for €62,000. He faced ten rivals at Loughanmore. As was the case in Olympy De Cerisy’s race at Loughrea, the majority found things too demanding. Noel McParlan rode Teeshan up with the pace from the start and took a definite lead at

the fifth. He recovered quickly from a slight mistake three out and powered home to win by a distance from the Mick Goff-trained Boyles Hill. It was a brilliant display. A son of long-established leading jumps sire Westerner, Teeshan is out of the Winged Love mare Miss Pepperpot, who won five races for Francis Flood. She was a tough mare. Her main claim to fame is that she beat Carlingford Lough in a handicap chase at Killarney’s May meeting in 2013. John Kiely’s top-class chaser won the Galway Plate that summer and went on to become a multiple Grade 1 winner. My third horse to keep an eye on is Honky Tonk Highway, the Colin Bowe-trained winner of the mares’ maiden at Tattersalls Farm on October 29. Colin is having another

great season, well on the way to securing the leading handlers’ title for the 12th time with 17 wins already. I was riding a filly called Diva Luna for Aidan Fitzgerald and was very happy with her going to the thirdlast. It seemed like I was going to be involved in the finish with the two joint-favourites, Bluey, who had made the running under Jack Hendrick, and Honky Tonk Highway, who was just being eased into contention by Barry O’Neill. Bluey soon dropped away but I thought I was still in with a chance between the last two. Just before the final fence, Honky Tonk Highway started to edge ahead. We both jumped it well, but Barry’s mount kept on better to score by three lengths. I’m as confident as I can be that both mares will make the grade on the track. Honky Tonk Highway was a €55,000 purchase by the Milestone Bloodstock operation at the 2022 Goffs Land Rover sale. After her win at the Fairyhouse venue she was sold for £165,000 to Ryan Mahon and Dan Skelton Racing at the Tattersalls Cheltenham November sale. She is a daughter of Milan out of St Gregory, a Presenting mare who won five races for Nicky Richards. St Gregory stayed three miles and her dam was a bumper and hurdles winner by the great Flat stayer Ardross, and a half-sister to Feels Like Gold, who won the Becher Chase for Richards. It’s a family loaded with stamina. That’s also true of the runner-up Diva Luna, whose dam is a half-sister to Longhouse Poet, the Martin Brassil-trained Thyestes Chase winner. Diva Luna is by Diamond Boy, the sire of Cheltenham Festival winners Impaire Et Passe and L’Homme Presse, who stands at the O’Keeffe family’s Kilbarry Lodge Stud in County Waterford. Con O’Keeffe was in the news when saddling Silent Approach to win Sunday’s Grade 2 mares’ novice chase at Cork. The Walk In The Park mare didn’t race in points, but a 33-1 winner for a mare from a small pointing yard, in a race in which Gordon Elliott and Willie Mullins supplied the other four runners, was the sort of surprise that can only be good for the sport as a whole.

IN FOCUS Josh Williamson reveals his ambition to follow in his father’s footsteps and become a professional jockey

I

’VE always wanted to become a jockey and I started by riding working hunting ponies, which I loved. When Covid came I started eventing and I got on well at that. I won a gold medal at a European championships, which was a really good time, but through all that I was waiting to turn 16 in order to be able to ride on the track. After watching videos of my dad, Norman, being a jockey was always the dream. I turned 17 in September but Dad had been looking for a horse for me the previous summer to go point-topointing. He thought I could ride in point-to-points when I turned 16 so he had to hold off on his search for another year. Hardline was point-topointing last season and won two races before going back to the track. He had that bit of form when Dad was in Doncaster earlier in the year and he bought him. He’s great to have, a super ride, anyone could ride him really. I sat on him only a couple of days before I rode him in Turtulla last month. I was in transition year in school last year so I was in Gordon Elliott’s pretty much every morning. But I’m back in school this year so I get in as many weekends as I can and then whenever I’m on holiday. Cossie McGivern rides out Hardline every morning and looks after him and he told me he thought he was in as good form as he’s ever been, and he has looked after him for a long

‘If he’s still in good form it would be a dream to get over the National fences’

time. Without having sat s on Hardline much myself this year, Cossie was able to fill me with confidence. Hardline is a lovely spin; he jumps, travels and takes you into a race when you want to. We were delighted with w how he ran first time out at Turtulla. Dad brought him down that day and when he got there he was thinking he shouldn’t have brought him at all, but to have got as close as he did to Ramillies, and for Ramillies to then come out and win by 40 lengths the next time showed it worked out well. We would have liked to have won but, looking back now, it made no difference. He gave me my first pointto-point winner, then at Borris on his next start we came up against Focus Point and my first cousin Dan Hyde. My mum and his dad are sister and brother, so they were discussing should they run against each other, but we both decided to run as there weren’t any other races for them this side of Christmas. Focus Point is a very good horse in his own right, so it was great to come out the right side of that battle. Turning in, I didn’t think I was holding on to an awful lot but once I gave him a kick in the belly he pricked his ears

HEALY RACING

Ha ardline provides Josh Williamson (inset) W with a first pointto-point winner at Borris House

coming to the second-last and took off with me. That surprised me. I thought I might have had to get into a battle with Focus Point, but once he got past him, he quickened away. Mum, Dad, my younger sister Carla, my grandmother Trish and my uncle Tim, were all there on the day too. Gordon has been a great help to me and his plan is to keep Hardline in opens for the moment. If all goes to plan, we

might look at some of the big spring festivals, maybe getting to Aintree for the Foxhunters’. It would be a dream to get to Aintree. We have a long way to go to get there but if Hardline is still in good form it would be a dream to get over the National fences. You grow up watching those races and there’s nothing like it. Dad has been a great help to get me this far. He’s been invaluable really. For my first few rides he would walk the

track with me and, even now, he would still do it the odd time, and he would be able to give me a pretty good idea of how to ride each track. He would watch the race, then we would go back through it afterwards. He’s not overcritical but if I’ve made a mistake he would obviously tell me, and I think there is no point hiding from mistakes. Every time I ride he tells me something to improve on the next day; he’s been brilliant. I

NEWS AND VIEWS

don’t think my riding would have progressed without him; he’s been a huge help. I’m going to finish out school and, all being well, I’d like to go to college but, after school, if I was in a position to turn conditional, I’d like to. That’s a long time away. For now, I just want to try to ride as many winners as I can and the ultimate goal would be to go professional one day. JOSH WILLIAMSON WAS TALKING TO EOGHAIN WARD

Season extended after Kirkistown rescheduled

THE autumn term has been extended by a week, with the North Down Foxhounds fixture at Kirkistown, which had been rescheduled to last Saturday, having to be postponed again. At the 48-hour inspection last Thursday parts of the cours e w ere waterlogg e d, resulting in the fixture being put back by seven days to this Saturday, December 16, with the original entries standing. Handlers will then swiftly be turning their attention to the spring term, which begins at D r o m a h a n e o n S a t u rd a y , December 30, and entries for that fixture close next Tuesday, December 19. Those wishing to run at Ballindenisk or Tinahely on January 7 will need to have their hunter certificates lodged

with the IHRB by close of business this Friday, December 15. There is then a cut-off of Friday, December 29 for the registering of hunter certificates in order to r un at Aghabullogue or Turtulla on January 14.

Pierce on a roll with Ascot purchases

Wexford handler Paul Pierce will be rueing the decision made by Tattersalls this year to discontinue their June sales at Ascot as the Berkshire venue has proved a rich source of stock, particularly horses from the consignment of Shade Oak Stud in Shropshire. Last year, Pierce’s Blackhall stables team sent out Seeyouinmydreams to win a four-yearold mares’ maiden at Largy, a

performance which saw her sold for 235,000gns having been bought six months earlier at the Ascot December sale for £10,500. Unsurprisingly, after that result, the Blackhall stables team were back at Ascot the following month when Bellas Bridge was selected from the Shade Oak Stud draft. A daughter of Telescope, as was Seeyouinmydreams, she went on to make a winning debut at Dromahane in April. That boosted her purchase price of £10,000 to €155,000 at the Goffs Punchestown sale. Pierce completed the hat-trick on Sunday at Boulta when Lady Rose Hackett won on her debut in the opener. Another recruit from that less conventional source, the Telescope mare was bought

last November for £22,000, and completed a remarkable run of success, with the stable’s last three winners of four-year-old mares’ maidens having been bought from the same vendor at the same sales venue.

Don’t Matter Now top of the scoring charts

Don’t Matter Now became the first horse this season to move on to the three-winner mark after a hard-fought success in the winners-of-two at Boulta. The eight-year-old is now three from three for Declan Queally, having joined the Waterford trainer after being out of action for two and a half years. Since making his winning stable debut in an older maiden at Damma House last month he has now won

consecutive winners’ events at Boulta, with his latest success coming in the same race his stablemate Rocky’s Howya won en route to becoming champion point-to-point horse last season. Although a year older than his sidelined stablemate he is following a similar path through the ranks after an older maiden success. His position as the season’s most successful horse so far and the fact that six of the eight horses on two victories have achieved them in maiden and/ or w inners’ company, is evidence of just how strong open lightweight races have been this term. Lifetime Ambition and Ramillies are the only two horses to have won more than one open race.

Jonbon top win makes another Irish point

The withdrawal of Constitution Hill and Shishkin from the Fighting Fifth Hurdle denied ex-Irish pointers the opportunity to secure successive victories in the first British Grade 1 over hurdles of the season. All was not lost at Sandown o n S a t u rd ay , h o w e v e r, a s another of the card’s Grade 1 two-mile prizes, the Tingle Creek Chase, was secured by Jonbon, a fifth top-level success for the son of Walk In The Park since his career started with a win at Dromahane three years earlier under the care of Ellmarie Holden. That was a third Grade 1 of the season for graduates of Irish point-to-points after Gerri Colombe and Farren Glory.

Hitak redeems himself in style for Jonbon trainer Holden TWENTY-FOUR hours after h e r s t a r g ra d u a t e Jo n b o n landed his fifth Grade 1 prize in the Tingle Creek at Sandown, Ellmarie Holden was back in the winner’s enclosure after the wide-margin success of Hitak. Absent since disappointing as favourite on his debut at Ballyknock in April 2022, the £50,000 son of Lauro belatedly justified that initial confidence as Patrick Cody guided him to a 12-length defeat of Arctic Skua in the Louth Hunt Members and INHSC older maiden for novice riders. “We always liked him but he’s had a couple of setbacks along the way,” Holden said. “I’m delighted for Patrick; he’s only across the road from us and rides out for us.” Ian Donoghue and Declan Lavery were the only combination to leave the Meath venue with a double, their brace opened by the debut success of Derryhassen Paddy in the Tattersalls NH four-year-old geldings’ maiden. Derryhassen Paddy was quickest away from the final fence as he made a winning debut in game fashion

particularly notable for the locally based handler as it supplied him with his first success in the age division. “If he didn’t do that we would have been very disappointed,” Donoghue said. “We knew he was a fair horse and all his work has been very good. “We broke him early as a three-year-old and we loved him. His owner took a bit of convincing but it paid off, t ha n k G o d . He’s a p ro p e r horse.” The pair doubled their tally when John The Spark supplemented his Moira maiden success in the Louth Hunt Pony Club winners’ race. Much of the focus before the race was on the hat-trickseeking Shiroccosmagicgem but her challenge ended with a fall three out, leaving the Stephen O ’Connor-ow ned

Telescope gelding to win by five lengths. He could now tackle a hunter chase at Limerick. A week after enjoying a highprofile victory with Street Value a t Fa i r y h o u s e, T r a m o re handler John Flavin was again among the winners. This time it was at the point-to-point venue directly across the road from the home of the Irish National when his own Reve Inoui landed the Countr y Fresh five-year-old geldings’ maiden. A faller at Lingstown eight days earlier, the grey son of Kingston Hill gained swift compensation as he came out on top by a short head after a protracted battle with Pat D o y l e ’s Q u a k e r s t o w n runner-up Tory Hill. Racegoers were treated to a similarly tight outcome in the Tattersalls NH four-year-old mares’ maiden as Jokers ‘N’ Clowns made the best possible start to her racing career. Reigning champion under-21 r ider Dara McGill made a decisive move to get an inside position into the home bend and that put Warren Ewing’s Jet Away mare in pole position in

sight of the final fence. Although Wrappedinrubies closed to within a short-head at the line it proved too much of a gap to bridge for the patiently ridden runner-up. A f t e r t h re e c o n s e c u t i v e seconds last season, two in photo-finishes, Glendaars Fortune was the most deserving winner on the card as she made a victorious seasonal reappearance in the Candlefort Stud five-year-old mares’ maiden. Win n i ng ow n er- b re e der Frank Reynolds was on hand to

welcome his Soldier Of Fortune m a r e i n t o t h e w i n n e r ’s enclosure after Ray Barron g u i d e d t h e Ja m e s Fa h e y trained chestnut to an eightlength defeat of Desperado Genie. “She had good form up to this and I was expecting her to win,” Fahey said. “It’s her first run back in a long time but the o n l y w o r r y I ha d w a s t h e ground and she got through it well. “She’s for sale and if she’s not sold she will run on the track over Christmas.”

John The Spark followed up his maiden success at Moira by completing a double for rider Declan Lavery and handler Ian Donoghue (above); after three successive secondplace finishes, Glendaars Fortune was an impressive winner of the five-year-old mares’ maiden under Ray Barron (below)

‘One of the best jumpers I’ve had’ – Goff hints at big track future for stable ace Rosscahill THE Mick Goff-trained newcomer Rosscahill hinted that a bright track career lies in wait after a taking success in the Hickey Bros Precast and Ryall & O’Mahoney four-yearold geldings’ maiden. On a day of testing conditions, Rosscahill occupied a prominent position as Manatee Du Brizais took the 14-runner field along at a generous gallop. Rosscahill edged ahead after four out and when Manatee Du Brizais fell two from home when disputing second the winning son of Malinas, who is out of a half-sister to Grade 1-placed chaser Roberto Goldback, was able to assert from the last for Mikey Sweeney to beat the favourite, Malfoy Manor, by five lengths. “He’s probably one of the best jumpers I’ve had but he’s just needed that bit of time. The plan was always to come here or go to Dromahane on December 30,” Goff said of the €26,000 graduate of the 2022 Tattersalls Ireland May sale who is owned by Goff ’s wife Catriona in partnership with John O’Halloran. Rosscahill is called after the Galway village between Moycullen and Oughterard from where O’Halloran hails. The Powers Gold Label and Hurleys SuperValu five-yearold geldings’ maiden attracted the day’s biggest field of 15 runners and the Paul Powertrained Gentleman Bill atoned for unseating four out on his Lingstown debut eight days earlier by scoring in the hands of Barry Stone. In a race in which three horses exited when holding some chance two out, Gentleman Bill powered to the front after the penultimate fence to beat longtime leader Traveling Soldier by a length. “He was unlucky to unseat at Lingstown and he’ll probably go to the sales now,” Power said of his Rule Of Law-sired winner, named after Tramorebased owner-breeder Fionan O’Driscoll’s vet Bill Twomey.
