Straight to the Point

Codd’s swift return from injury tells you a lot about his determination

T

he action took place at Tyrella on Saturday and was the first northern fixture of the second-half of the season. It’s a lovely seaside track where you often get good ground, but the lack of rain this winter meant it was on the quick side this time and that unfortunately resulted in small fields, with only 34 runners in all. Although that was disappointing, there were some notable performances. It was great to see Jamie Codd back after injury. It tells you a lot about his determination that he has resumed so quickly. He wasted no time in getting back into winning habits on the Denis Murphy-trained Shantou gelding Whatsupwithyou in the five-year-old maiden. Later he enjoyed an armchair ride on Kruzhlinin in the fourrunner open. This was a fifth consecutive win for the Sholokhov gelding who will be fighting it out with the Sam Curling-trained mare Longhouse Music for the title of champion pointer. Kruzhlinin is trained by Gordon Elliott for Camilla Sharples and was the first leg of a stable double involving members of Gordon’s staff. It was a memorable day for team-member Georgie Benson, who rode her first winner on Three Kings in the finale. Harley Dunne is having a good season and added two winners to his score, with the highlight provided by Achy Breaky Heart, who won a battle of the Wexford trainers in the mares’ maiden. The promising daughter of Milan is trained by Shane Byrne, who picked up valuable experience with Denis Murphy.

Queally continues his sparkling form

I was at the Scarteen meeting at Kilfeacle on Sunday. It’s a great venue and the local committee prides itself on the history and tradition of the famous pack. The hospitality is second-tonone, and it’s always a pleasure to ride at the meeting, even though I had mixed luck.

HEALY RACING

Kruzhlinin jumps the last under Jamie Codd before landing the open lightweight at Tyrella in emphatic style for his fifth win of the season and the jockey’s second of the day

There was no shortage of runners as 18 went to post for the five-year-old geldings’ maiden, run in a quick time in testing conditions, and won by the Kieran Purcell-trained Solo Cargo, stepping up from his second at Mainstown earlier in the month. The Salutino gelding, ridden by Declan Queally, came home well to collar promising newcomer Ain’t That A Shame and win by a short head. It was a grand staying performance by the winner, who looks the right sort for a point-to-point bumper before he goes jumping on the track – he has plenty of scope physically. The day belonged to Declan, who does an amazing job in juggling his riding and training commitments, completing a riding treble on two horses that he trains. Springfield Fox was an easy winner of the winner of three,

in which only two of the seven runners completed, but I’m sure he will take the most pleasure from the victory of Fenno’s Storm, who beat my mount Stand Up And Fight in the open. Naturally, I was disappointed not to make it three in a row on Enda Bolger’s Flemensfirth gelding after wins at Dromahane and in the hunter chase at Down Royal, but fair play to Fenno’s Storm who was as tough as nails in worsening conditions. The eight-year-old gelding is probably a better horse than people think. He’s had limited experience on the track, but showed good form in beating Jim Dreaper’s Venitien De Mai in last season’s Tetratema at Gowran and he went close against another of the Dreaper horses, Sizing Coal, in the Joseph O’Reilly at Fairyhouse. He’s a tough horse who loves

a battle and his point-to-point record now stands at seven wins from 14 starts, and four seconds, including behind the talented Burning Ambition on his seasonal debut at Templenacarriga. We were beaten fair and square, but looking forward I’m not at all despondent about Stand Up And Fight. It helped that I ended the day on a high note, teaming up with Robert Tyner to win the six-year-old geldings maiden with Carrigmoorna Pine in the colours of the Old Fools Syndicate. The owners have been anything but foolish in allowing Robert, whose track team has been in brilliant form since Christmas, to take a patient approach with the six-year-old Oscar gelding. Just like Solo Cargo, he could make his presence felt in a point-to-point bumper before going jumping.

Getaway impresses on debut for Doyle

Sunday’s other fixture was at Kilossera near Dungarvan, another great venue and an established fixture in the calendar, run on land owned by the Kiely family, who have made a massive contribution to racing in County Waterford. The day’s outstanding performance came from the Pat Doyle-trained Getaway Pat, who landed the 17-runner fiveyear-old geldings’ maiden under Johnny Barry. He’s out of an unraced Supreme Leader mare with an attractive pedigree. There were also 17 runners for the mares’ maiden won easily by the Terence O’Brientrained Kalli’s Quest. She’s a half-sister to several multiple winners, including Mister Hyde, Glenquest, Cool Quest and Mill Guest. Terence will be hoping it’s a good omen for Articulum, his

talented novice chaser due to take on the big boys in the Arkle at Leopardstown on Saturday – the nine-year-old won first time out at Liscarroll four years ago.

County Clare staging charity race

It’s a big day in the west on Sunday with the County Clare meeting at Bellharbour. The organisers are pulling out all the stops to make sure this will be a great family day with loads of side attractions for children and adults and a pavilion where TV coverage of Leopardstown will be relayed. The finale will be a Lady riders’ Flat event for Hunt Members, a fundraiser for Breast Cancer Ireland, and it should be a memorable occasion for those taking part in a great cause. They’ll be competing for a trophy donated to the Hunt in 1938.

Point grads dominate Thyestes Handicap AS THE build-up to the big spring festivals begins to intensify, Irish point-to-pointers have achieved notable success in the last week. Last Thursday, horses that had begun their careers between the flags filled the first six places in the Goffs Thyestes Handicap Chase, and for the second year running, a horse that had carried the Monbeg Syndicate colours in point-to-points claimed the valuable Grade A prize. Sean Doyle’s Ballynoe fouryear-old winner, Invitation Only, came out on top in a tight battle with the Rob James-ridden Alpha Des Obeaux. Although the leading Wexford r ide r, w ho had previo us ly partnered Doyle’s charge to win his maiden point four years earlier, was cruelly denied, his talents as one of the most valuable 7lb claimers on the track were deservedly recognised by Elliott and Gigginstown House Stud, who gave him the opportunity. Invitation Only’s victory came a year and three days after the death of Patrick McCormack, who signed for the three-year-old in 2014, and will have been a poignant moment for his family. At the weekend, Irish pointers continued to dominate several of the Graded races staged over the two days, with the likes of Jerry Cosgrave’s Dromahane winner Honeysuckle maintaining her unbeaten record in the Grade 3 mares’ hurdle at Fairyhouse on Saturday. However, the undoubted story of triumph by the weekend’s point-to-point winners was the continued success achieved by those who had started their careers with Colin McKeever. Year after year, his academy continues to churn out talented t r a c k p e r fo r m e r s a n d l a s t weekend was further evidence of his skill. In all, five of his former horses won over the weekend, including Cheltenham Grade 2 winner Birchdale, and Naas Grade 3 winner Ballyward.

Gordon Elliott staff in one-two finish

The Gordon Elliott yard enjoyed a one-two in the final race at Tyrella on Saturday, both ridden by stable staf f, as Georgie Benson’s Three Kings got the better of Seamus Perr y and Smoking Dixie in a close finish. The winning rider won the Ne wc o m e r Aw a rd a t t h e Godolphin Stud and Stable Staff Awards last year, while Perry rode a handful of times as a conditional jockey before taking out his amateur’s licence this season. It is the pair’s first season in point-to-points and they were joined by several other stable staff members to cheer them on. These races provide a great opportunity for young riders to get involved in race-riding and those yards that provide such chances for their staff should be richly congratulated.

Showjumper Higgins to ride in Hunt race

Last weekend’s two confined maidens may well have produced disappointing fields, with only three runners in the respective maidens at Kilfeacle and Dungarvan on a day of big fields at both venues, however, another form of local races continues to be popular. This weekend, a seventh race will be staged at both Ballinaboola and Bellharbour for members of the two organising hunts. At Ballinaboola, 11 members of the Wexford Foxhounds, including well-known showjumper Jason Higgins, who has already had success between the flags as an owner with horses trained by James Doyle, will feature in the day’s seventh race. A field of 12 should prove a big

local draw for the County Clare fixture at Bellharbour, where their local members’ race is confined to lady riders this year. Last year’s race for over-50s had the crowd in great spirits and this year’s race will be run in aid of Breast Cancer Ireland to help their pioneering research. Laura and Sarah Costello, two granddaughters of the late Tom Costello, a legend of the sport, will be among riders who will feature on a day full of family entertainment.

Tyrella bookies buck recent trend

Reducing numbers of bookmakers at some point-to-points in recent years has been a talking point for many, as their decline mirrors fewer bookmakers at low-key midweek fixtures on racecourses. In light of the worrying trend, it was good to see a healthy turnout in the betting ring at Tyrella on Saturday, when 14 bookies were in the ring, despite poor weather and smaller-thanaverage f ield sizes for t he picturesque County Down course.

AFTER a month out injured, Jamie Codd wasted no time in getting back among the winners with a timely double. His first success came in the Steel Lintels Ireland Ltd. five-yearold geldings’ maiden on Whatsupwithyou. The Denis Murphy-owned-andtrained son of Shantou was getting off the mark in his third race, having finished a fine second at Tinahely earlier this month. Waited with in mid-division, the bay made good progress to pick up the advantage turning in, before being left clear by the departure of Going Solo at the last. Codd’s mount was allowed to return home a distance clear of September Venture. “He has just taken a bit of time, but is a horse that is going to improve. I would say he will be sold now,” said the Wexford rider. Kruzhlinin provided Codd with the second leg of his double in the JP Corry open, maintaining the gelding’s unbeaten record between the flags this season. Gordon Elliott ’s odd-on favourite never gave his supporters any cause for worry, making much of the running before easing clear in the closing stages for a 12-length success over Art Of Logistics. Owned by Camilla Sharples, who was present to see the

Whatsupwithyou is an improving sor t who won impressively on his third start and could be an interesting sort under rules victory, the son of Sholokhov joins Longhouse Music at the top of the Champion Horse table on five wins this season. Elliott had a double on the day when he saddled the first two home in the concluding Millar McCall Wylie older geldings’ maiden. T h r e e K i n g s p r ov i d e d Georgie Benson with her first success in the saddle when coming from a fair way back to collar stablemate Smoking Dixie on the run-in, with only a length separating the pair. The winning seven-year-old was returning from an unsuccessful spell under rules. Tipperar y owner Michael Browne had the thrill of owning the first two home and said: “It’s brilliant – it’s like we’ve won the Grand National. I used to have them myself, but I had to go for an operation and Gordon [Elliott] took them. He thinks they are both good enough to go back to the track, so it’s up to him.” Trainer Shane Byrne has been doing well with his small team of horses this season and Achy Breaky Heart followed up a

promising debut to take the Albert Bartlett five-year-old mares’ maiden. Harley Dunne was content to stalk the leader throughout before producing the daughter of Milan at the penultimate obstacle. The eventual winner held the advantage at the final fence when left clear by the departure of long-time leader Frank and Honest, leaving Alice O’Byrne to come home 15 lengths behind in second. “She was sharp there; she really travelled and jumped today. Hopefully, we will go to the sales now as she has a nice pedigree,” said Byrne, who saw the mare carry his own colours to victory. Dunne also enjoyed a double when making the most of a spare ride in the Anonymous Generous Supporter winner of two on Lisnagreggan. The Wexford rider deputised for regular rider Neil Gault, who was unable to take the mount after a fall the previous day. The odds-on favourite sat second for much of the race, heading long-time leader and runner-up Nevada Rose three-out, before picking up well for a threelength success. “That is the ground he needs. We might look at the maiden hunter chase at Downpatrick,” said winning trainer William Gault, who owns the gelding in partnership with Paul Martin.

Former rider Andrew Kinirons had his first winner as a trainer when Maggie Margaret landed t he CBRE six-year-old and upwards mares’ maiden by two and a half lengths. Mark O’Hare kept things simple on the Raymond Craine-owned mare, making almost every post a winning one.

On her fourth start, the sixyear-old stuck to her task well in the home straight, having being left clear by the departure of Lady Maureen at the last. “She has been working very well and is a great filly to jump. It’s great for the owners too,” said the winning handler’s partner, Madeline Tylicki.

Kalli’s Quest destroys rivals in maiden Eoghain Ward assesses winning performances at the weekend meetings

Tyrella

Saturday January 26

Achy Breaky Heart (79+) travelled with purpose after st amping her aut hor ity exiting the back straight. She will slot easily on to the track over shorter trips. Whatsupwithyou (87+) has progressed with each race this season and appeared to be getting the better of backto-form Going Solo (85x), who departed at the last. Lisnagreggan (87) is a consistent sort who was at his best in the conditions and, despite conceding 10lb to the

runner-up, made the most of a winnable opportunity. Kr uzhlinin (106++) dominated from the front and the manner in which he powered clear from the last suggested there was still a lot more to come. Maggie Margaret (74+) dict ated t he tempo before quickening from the second-last. She has the frame to develop into a competitive hurdler. Three Kings (85+) has a hurdles mark of 98 and after losing his position at the midway point, he skipped through his rivals in the home straight to lead on the run-in. He should have little trouble following up.

Dungarvan

Sunday January 27

Timetoroe (76+) powered home late in a steadily run race that produced a bunched finish in which little more than five

lengths covered the first six finishers. Get aw ay Pat (92+) produced one of the best performances of the season from a five-year-old. After racing with the leaders throughout, he moved clear from the second-last, and the son of Getaway galloped on relentlessly in impressive fashion. He is a horse to follow. Kalli’s Quest (82+) made her move around the home bend and went further clear on the extended run-in to destroy a competitive field. The form horse of the race was left trailing 12 lengths behind in second. It is very rare for a six-year-old mare to get a rating this high. Call His Bluff (80+) has track form which entitled him to win, but he will be better assessed after taking on fellow winners. Holly Flight (99+) was able

to pounce after the final fence departure of Bloodstream (98x) and as the principals began to falter close home. Shanacoole (85++) defied a 14-month absence to return to the promise he had shown before his lay-off with an easy success.

Kilfeacle

Sunday January 27

Solo Cargo (90+) is undoubtedly a stout stayer as he gamely stuck to his task in the home straight to collar the eyecatching newcomer Ain’t That A Shame (89+) in the dying strides of what was a competitive, big-field maiden. Byerley Beag (81+) is a lightly raced 11-year-old gelding who has returned from a four-year break this season and this was an ideal opportunity for him. Dualla Time (78+) overcame two significant errors

on the final circuit to prove herself an ultra-game mare who fought back from being headed on the run-in to win going away. She is definitely track standard. Fenno’s Storm (113+) is a very tough front-runner who outstayed the season’s leading hunter chaser to add to his reputation as one of the most exciting horses within the open division. As just an eight-year-old, he will be able to mix with the best hunter chasers on soft ground. Springfield Fox (101+) extended his unbeaten record to three with yet another emphatic success. Car rigmoor na Pine (86++) always appeared to be well within his comfort zone as he won without being asked a serious question.

Getaway Pat destined for the track after impressive debut PA T D O Y L E ’ S i m p r e s s i v e newcomer Getaway Pat looks a natural for the track. The 2017 Derby sale graduate, running in the colours of Doyle’s wife Mary, was an easy winner of the 17-runner Bridgie Terrie Pub & Restaurant f ive-year-old geldings’ maiden under John Barry. Always positioned with the leaders, he asserted approaching the last to beat Tom Barry’s hugely promising debutant Captain Blackpearl by three lengths. The pair returned ten lengths clear of the third-placed Ask A Honey Bee in a race which is likely to feature multiple winners. “He’s a nice horse and we’ve been waiting for winter ground for him. He will probably be sold now,” said the Tipperary trainer. The Al Eile Stud five-year-old and upwards confined maiden for novice riders attracted a mere t hree r unners and Michael S w e e n e y, f r e s h f r o m h i s memorable success on Ask Heather at Boulta the previous Sunday, maintained his advantage at the head of the novice riders’ championship with an eighth success of the campaign on Call His Bluff. An ex-track performer who finished third off a mark of 84 in a Clonmel handicap hurdle in September 2017, the seven-year-

Pat Doyle looks to have a smart performer in Getaway Pat, who made a taking debut and could become an exciting prospect under rules old made all the running to beat the only other finisher Glencottagelady by a distance. Owner-trainer Niall Hennessy said: “The track experience helped and the logical thing to do is to go for a winners’ race with him now.” Timetoroe stepped up from her most recent seventh-placed effort at Dromahane on December 30 by narrowly coming off best under Niall Redmond in a gripping three-way tussle at the finish of the Tom Curran-Topline five-year-old mares’ maiden. Glencoum Lass set out to make all and still held the call approaching the final fence with the pursuing Rarest Diamond appearing to be her biggest danger. But the winning daughter of Vinnie Roe closed on the lengthy run-in and she hit the front inside the final 50 yards to edge out the valiant Glencoum Lass by a short head, with a similar margin back to Rarest Diamond in third spot. “She’s improving the whole time and she will now more than

likely be sold,” said owner-trainer John Redmond. The Country Store (Conor Lannen) six-year-old and upwards geldings’ maiden saw Shanacoole make light of a 14-month lay-off by recording an authoritative success to justify favouritism. The Colin Motherway-trained six-year-old made his way to the front for Luke Murphy setting out on the final circuit. In command from after two-out, the victorious son of Oscar duly beat Lough Derg Lyric by five lengths. “He’s a horse that we just had to give a bit of time to, but we were quietly confident coming here and he will now go for a winners’ race,” said Motherway of his wife Linda’s winner, who was providing him with a third individual winner of the season. Terence O’Brien has his team i n c r a c k i n g o rd e r a n d t h e Carrigtwohill-based operator sent out Kalli’s Quest to record a scintillating success with Darragh Allen in the Tom Fleming, Equine Dentist six-year-old and upwards mares’ maiden. The six-year-old had probably the best form on offer considering she finished third to Plan At The Minute on her debut at Dromahane on December 30 and she always occupied a prominent position.

The winning daughter of Kalanisi assumed command on the approach to the bypassed final fence and she then stormed clear on the run-in to beat the ultraconsistent Airgead Suas by 12 lengths. “She’s a mare that has kept improving and I knew that she would come on from her run at Dromahane,” said O’Br ien representing t he Coolglen Syndicate. The Murrays Family Pharmacy mares’ open was an eventful race with Paul O’Flynn’s pointing debutant Holly Flight arriving from well off the pace to record an unlikely looking success under Gary Noonan. Approaching the final fence, it appeared that the race would concern Bloodstream and Longhouse Music. Bloodstream, however, cruelly came to grief at the last when holding a slender advantage. Runner-up Longhouse Music was then left in front, but Holly Flight made up some five lengths on the run-in to hit the front inside the dying strides to deny Eoin Mahon’s mount by a head. “Ciaran Fennessy does all the work with this mare at home and she will run in another mares’ open in a few weeks’ time,” said trainer Paul O’Flynn.

Queally showcases his talents with treble

DECLAN QUEALLY could get a job in the circus with his juggling skills. Not only did he ride a treble, he trained two of them to show he is a man of many talents. The Waterford trainer-jockey got off the mark in the saddle on the Kieran Purcell-owned and trained Solo Cargo in the opening Tattersalls Ireland fiveyear-old geldings’ maiden. The son of Salutino was never too far away from the lead and had to battle hard in the closing stages to collar the tiring Ain’t That A Shame late on, with only a short head separating the pair at the line. “This horse had a lovely run the last day in Mainstown. He’s a good, honest horse that will most likely be moved on now,” said the Kilkenny trainer. Fenno’s Storm caused an upset in the Hinchys Garage Open when getting t he better of odds-on favourite Stand Up And Fight, a horse that had begun t he day as clear ante-post favourite for the Cheltenham Foxhunters. The now eight-time winner is owned by Maurice Walsh and connections hinted that the Tetratema Hunter Chase at Gowran Park would be his next objective before aiming for the Joseph O’Reilly around Fairyhouse. Queally brought up the treble in the saddle and trained his second winner of the afternoon when Springfield Fox took the Kirbys Pharmacy winner of three. Owned by Ludlow-based John Needham, the son of Sagamix

picked up the running four-out and the result never looked in doubt from there. The grey stuck to his task gamely to see-off recent Templenacarriga winner Shuil Luas by 14 lengths. The five-year-old gelding is now three from three between the flags and the winning trainer said: “We think he’s a fair horse and he showed that there today. He didn’t have too hard a race, so we may now look at the winners of three at Ballinaboola next weekend.” Although only three runners started the Sam Russell Bloodstock five-year-old and upwards confined maiden, it was understandable as there were only eight horses with a Scarteen hunter certificiate registered this season. The Michael Hennessey-owned Byerley Beag provided Roger Quinlan with his eighth winner of the season with a cosy success over Verticalpebble by a lengthand-a-half. “This horse had some good form in maiden hurdles. He got

injured and we had to give him time. Today was his day and we’re thrilled,” said trainer Sean Hennessy. The GAIN Equine Nutrition five-year-old and upwards mares’ maiden saw John Ryan send out his second point-to-point winner of the season when Dualla Time made a winning debut. Ridden by Shane Fitzgerald, t he daughter of Cloudings bounced out and made t he running, before battling on gamely in the home straight to see-off Forthegreatergood by a length-and-a-half. “This is a very nice mare that has a lovely future on the track. She will either go for a mares’ winners race or for a maiden hunter chase next,” said the Templemore trainer, of the Michael Moloney-owned six-yearold. Carrigmoorna Pine was a c o nv i n c i n g w i n n e r o f t h e concluding Pegus Horse Feed older geldings’ maiden under Derek O’Connor.
