WORLD’S BEST RACEHORSE RANKINGS Paul Curtis ANALYSIS
I
T MAY have wanted for quality, but there was no lack of competition on the figures among the leading horses last year, as demonstrated by the unprecedented three-way tie for top spot in the 2019 Longines World’s Best Racehorse Rankings. That the King George 1-2-3 of Enable, Crystal Ocean and Waldgeist have all been given an official rating of 128 might have the look of a fudge, but with only four previous ties in the last 30 years of classifications (albeit with two of those coming since 2013) it’s more likely just a reflection of how tight it was at the top last year. Although Crystal Ocean gets the nod on Racing Post Ratings with a mark of 129 for his gallant attempt to concede 3lb to Enable at Ascot, there was clearly very little between the leading performers and a case can be made for any of the three to claim top billing. For our money the King George form gives Crystal Ocean the edge, but the rankings committee have taken the opportunity to bump Enable’s figure up through her easy Yorkshire Oaks success in what amounted to a match with Magical. The Arc is traditionally the strongest race and it’s no surprise to see Waldgeist’s defeat of Enable awarded its full worth despite doubts over the form on testing ground and with the pace rather collapsing. He’d twice been held by Crystal Ocean at Ascot in the summer and can be considered fortunate to be rated his equal. While the stars of 2019 produced some memorable action, a world’s best figure of 128 is disappointing, the first time since 2009 that the leading figure has dipped below 130 and matching Rock Of Gibraltar’s 2002 figure as a historic low. However, overall the figures have held up, with 56 individual horses rated at 120 and above against a recent average of 57, and history shows that the figures can soon bounce back. Levels in the 2014 rankings were similarly disappointing with a European high of 127 (Australia/Kingman/The Grey Gatsby), yet 2015 gave us American Pharoah and Golden Horn. One area in which performance did not disappoint was among the sprinters, with Battaash getting something like the credit he deserves after his record-breaking Nunthorpe win. Rated 123 in the previous two rankings, the champion sprinter moves up to 126, which sees him rated the best European sprinter this century. With regular updates throughout the year, there are few surprises in the rankings and only four horses in the top 20 have seen their figures tweaked since the previous rankings on November 10. Significantly, Battaash
The King George 1-2-3 Enable (right), Crystal Ocean (centre) and Waldgeist finished equal top of last year’s world rankings with a rating of 128
King George epic reflected how tight it was at the top is among them with a 1lb upgrade moving him ahead of 2003 champion Oasis Dream (125) and rating him the best five-furlong performer in Europe since Dayjur, whose track record he lowered at York last August. RPRs rate him higher still, with his Nunthorpe romp worthy of top billing with Crystal Ocean on 129 and ranking alongside Oasis Dream as the benchmark at five furlongs. Ordinarily an official mark of 124 would be enough to see Blue Point rated champion sprinter, and with an RPR of 127 for his King’s Stand Stakes defeat of Battaash he ranks as one of the best of recent years. Although he beat Battaash fair and square at the royal meeting, that was very much a ‘home’ win for Blue Point, who loved Ascot, and like the official assessors we rate Battaash’s speed show on the Knavesmire the better effort. Levels among the three-year-olds were even more depressed last year, with Prix du Jockey Club winner Sottsass topping the rankings on 123 – the lowest mark for the leading three-year-old in the history of the rankings by 2lb – and that figure coming courtesy of his
Arc third to older pair Waldgeist and Enable. With established working practices, points of difference between the world rankings and RPRs are infrequent, but in rating Sottsass the leading three-year-old the committee looks to have taken a more positive view of his Arc third than perhaps entitled, moving him up 3lb from the 120 awarded his French Derby win.
H
E HAD half a length to spare on Japan in the Arc, but Japan’s Juddmonte International defeat of an admittedly below-par Crystal Ocean looks better form and worthy of an RPR of 125. Indeed, we have Japan, dominant July Cup winner Ten Sovereigns and dual Group 1 winner Too Darn Hot ahead of Sottsass (RPR 123). Where we can agree is that last year’s three-year-old crop was underwhelming, with Anthony Van Dyck’s ranking of 118 marking a new low for the Derby winner and placing him only joint-eighth officially among the Classic crop. Likewise, Guineas winners Magna
Grecia and Hermosa rank at the bottom end of expectations with official marks of 120 and 115, with the former fortunate to rank alongside the Newmarket second King Of Change, who clearly improved to win the Queen Elizabeth II Stakes and has the profile to suggest can rate higher still. RPRs give King Of Change a deserved if narrow edge on 122 against 121 and underlines that early-season form might not prove the most reliable. The St Leger proved the exception among the Classics, with Logician well up to standard and matching the Derby winner with his ranking of 118. Although not needing to improve to win the final Classic, there’s surely more to come from the unbeaten colt and he rates one of the more exciting older prospects for this year. Stablemate Stradivarius was again dominant in the staying division, and like Battaash has received a winter upgrade to a ranking of 122. Due to his tendency to win by small margins, we still can’t be sure how good he might be, but his easy defiance of a penalty to confirm Goodwood Cup superiority over Dee Ex Bee to land a second Weatherbys Hamilton £1
million bonus in the Lonsdale Stakes hints that he could rate higher still and he was clearly the best stayer on the planet last year. His Long Distance Cup conqueror Kew Gardens may have something to say about that having shown a little improvement for the step up to two miles, but Stradivarius remains very much the one to beat on better ground. On the international stage, Hong Kong ace Beauty Generation was dominant in the mile division, deservedly taking that title outright this year after sharing honours with Winx in 2018. His performance under big weights in graded handicaps when conceding upwards of a stone to smart horses at Sha Tin last October rates some effort on the book. Win machine Winx didn’t have to approach her best form to win her four starts last year, a fact reflected in a reduced rating of 125, which sees her placed joint-ninth overall. Champion filly or mare from 2016 to 2018, this nevertheless represents an outstanding fifth consecutive year in the top ten of the World’s Best Racehorse Rankings.

Sam Walker reflects on a system that ignores consistency and versatility
T
HE WBRR method is unique in sport. Its flaw is that hanging everything on a single run fundamentally ignores consistency and versatility, while propping up one-race wonders and forgiving horses who lose more than they win. Rankings methods in other sports use performance ratings, but they often take in a range of results and give weight to recent or more important events. The World Ranking is an important measure that tells us how good a horse was on its best day but it

doesn’t encapsulate a whole career and it’s sometimes misleading to crown the highest-rated horse the world champion. Consistency is an asset most sports factor into their rankings. In racing this can be done by looking at all performances in Group 1 races or a calculation using performance ratings
over time, for example using median ratings across the year. The WBRR don’t publish ratings for every race so I’ve used Racing Post Ratings in the table below to show how the top 11 horses in the WBRR rankings fare on their median rating for 2019. Using a mean average throws up a
very similar set of results but the median pulls horses with huge outliers (either high or low) closer to their average. Granted a minimum of, say, three runs per horse, the median could be used as a standalone alternative to the WBRR method of crowning a champion. As the rankings already use huge positive outliers in their method, incorporating the median would help to rationalise their rankings and account for one-race wonders. Versatility is harder to calculate than consistency. Measurement is an issue because of regional variations in going readings, while racing styles (slower pace) in some countries makes it easier to cover a wider range of distances. In the table I’ve separated out all the 120+ RPR performances for the top 11 horses in the rankings, showing the range of distances and goings over which those performances were achieved. These ranges could be used to create a versatility rating, which could then be incorporated into the rankings.
Longevity is another metric people expect in their champions. Winx would come out best by this measure in 2019 as it was her fifth consecutive year with a Group 1 win. Remarkably, she went unbeaten throughout that time. The problem for the World Rankings is that they are rewarded for a fixed 12-month period, so anything outside those parameters is ignored. If the 12-month rule was relaxed, there is a precedent in cricket, in which ICC player rankings take account of an athlete’s whole career with a heavy weighting given to recent form. No sport rankings have the perfect solution, but one issue with the bestperformance-rating method is that for the fourth time in seven years the WBRR failed to find a world champion. For 2019 three horses shared the honour on a rating of 128. Enable had the highest average performance rating, though, and in another sport she might have been celebrated as the outright champion.

WORLD’S BEST RACEHORSE RANKINGS Simon Turner says one colt stood head and shoulders above the rest in 2019
L
AST year’s outstanding two-year-old was undoubtedly Pinatubo and his achievements have rightly been recognised in no uncertain terms by the European Thoroughbred Rankings committee. By awarding Pinatubo an official rating of 128, the committee are saying Godolphin’s star performer was a better two-year-old than Frankel – and the best two-year-old since 1994 champion Celtic Swing, who earned a mark of 130. Behind the poster boy however there is a notable lack of overall depth – just 40 horses have been awarded a rating of 110 or higher, the lowest such figure in the past 20 years and more than 15 per cent below the ten-year average. This is the sixth straight year there has been a reduction in the amount of two-year-olds in the rankings, but by far the biggest numerical drop in that period. If we look back 15 years from 2014, the average number of juveniles in that period was just over 52. Pinatubo has been rated a whopping 10lb clear of his peers. The son of Shamardal earned his defining figure in the National Stakes at the Curragh, where he produced the best two-year-old performance in 25 years. The unbeaten star was sent off a warm order in Ireland after thrashing subsequent Solario Stakes winner Positive (112) by five lengths in the Vintage Stakes at Glorious Goodwood.
Pinatubo exploits make him worthy of exalted rating A nine-length annihilation of Futurity winner Armory (110) was an outstanding effort and yes, marginally, Pinatubo is deserving of being rated slightly higher as a two-year-old than Frankel. That doesn’t mean the committee are saying Pinatubo is likely to be as good as the world’s best ever horse, just that at the same stage of their careers the form he has achieved is marginally better. Only Arazi and Celtic Swing have been awarded superior two-year-old ratings and it is likely we’ll be comparing future champions to Pinatubo for a long time to come. Fully 10lb behind Pinatubo in the rankings sit joint runners-up Earthlight and Kameko with ratings of 118. Being an unbeaten son of Shamardal in the care of Godolphin, Earthlight has plenty in common with Pinatubo (right) and also boasts two Group 1 wins on his cv, having conceded weight to Raffle Prize (114) in the Prix Morny on heavy ground and beaten Golden Horde (114) in the Middle Park on a much faster surface. Aside from his obvious talent, Andre Fabre’s colt proved himself both a resolute and versatile performer
and while his striding data raises a question mark over his ability to see out the mile, his master trainer is optimistic he will. Kameko made racing history when winning the Vertem Futurity Trophy at Newcastle, becoming the first British Group 1 all-weather winner in the process. Andrew Balding’s colt took a notable step forward on the Tapeta, coming home over three lengths clear of Innisfree (111) and Year Of The Tiger (110). Coventry winner Arizona (116), a stablemate of the
Vertem Futurity supporting cast, sits fourth in the rankings, at the head of Aidan O’Brien’s ten horses within the classification. The son of No Nay Never owes his rating to his solid effort in defeat behind Pinatubo in the Dewhurst. To be single-handedly responsible for a quarter of the two-year-olds in this year’s rankings is an outstanding achievement, but there is no hiding from the fact that last year’s Ballydoyle two-year-olds achieved less than we have become accustomed to on the racecourse. Aidan O’Brien was responsible for both the champion two-year-old colt and filly for three consecutive years from 2015 but has been a little way off the mark in both sections for the past two years. Having averaged marginally over 15 two-year-olds rated 110 or higher for the previous four years Ballydoyle’s class of 2019 was down in both merit and strength, seemingly explaining why the overall numerical strength of this year’s rankings is down this year. As ever, it is hard to quibble with the vast majority of the committee’s work, with very few horses differing from their Racing Post Ratings by more than a length, which very much the fits the usual pattern.

An interesting case of a highly rated horse where there is a difference of opinion concerns Mums Tipple (115). Richard Hannon’s colt has a RPR of 118 courtesy of his demolition job in York’s six-furlong sales race, where he stretched fully 11 lengths clear of his rivals. The son of Footstepsinthesand failed to
get anywhere near that form on his only subsequent start in the Middle Park behind Earthlight but was reportedly lame afterwards and may yet back up those Knavesmire fireworks. One of the stories of the 2019 two-year-old season was Jessica Harrington’s outstanding two-year-old results. Remarkably 21 of Harrington’s 25 individual winning two-year-olds were fillies. The quality of her team was outstanding with no less than three fillies trained at Commonstown Stables making the rankings. Success in the Cheveley Park earned Millisle (115) champion filly status while Prix Marcel Bousac winner Albigna (114) and Cayenne Pepper (110), who earned her rating in the Flame Of Tara Stakes, complete an impressive trio. In direct contrast to the leading colts, the head of the fillies’ leaderboard is congested with Albigna, Powerful Breeze (113), Quadrilateral (114) and Raffle Prize (114) all rated close up behind Millisle in the rankings. Looking ahead to this year, there seems a good chance of Godolphin transferring their outstanding two-year-old campaign into some form of dominance in the three-year-old division too. Pinatubo would be difficult to beat over a mile if replicating last year’s best form while Earthlight looks a strong contender for Group 1 success this year too. Don’t forget Lagardere winner Victor Ludorum (114), remarkably a third unbeaten juvenile Group 1 winner by Shamardal or possible Derby contender Military March (114), Saeed Bin Suroor’s undefeated Autumn Stakes winner. Godolphin clearly have enviable strength in depth within their high-quality three-year-old ranks. The evidence within this year’s rankings suggests 2020 could be a massive year for them.
