BREEDING STOCK SALES

Crucial finale to exciting European sales season

W

ITH the breeding-stock sales in Kentucky winding down, it’s the turn of Europe to take centre stage, with Goffs, Tattersalls and Arqana all gearing up for their big broodmare and foal auctions over the next few weeks. In the pages that follow we highlight just a few of the eyecatching lots while providing all you need to know ahead of the sales, which kick off at Goffs. Its catalogue comprises 367 lots, with the fillies and mares coming under the hammer between parts one and two of the November Foal Sale, on the 21st and 22nd. Among those who immediately stand out are Snowflakes, a sister to dual Guineas winner Winter and in foal to US Navy Flag; Could It Be Love, a winner and Group 1-placed four-year-old who is in foal to Australia; and Dufay, a winning daughter of Dubawi out of Group 1 scorer White Moonstone, who is carrying to Invincible Spirit. James Thomas and Nancy Sexton are the Racing Post’s dream team in County Kildare to cover the sales, and likewise at Tattersalls at the end of the month and into December – you can keep up to date during the action with Nancy’s blogs. One of the standout highlights in Newmarket will be the sale of regally bred Coplow, dam of Classic heroine Billesdon Brook, who also recently landed the Group 1 Sun Chariot Stakes. Coplow comes under auction in foal to Kingman. A more familiar name, and one who will also command plenty of attention, is Mabs Cross, the popular Michael Dods-trained sprinter who won last year’s Prix de l’Abbaye. The five-year-old features among a catalogue in excess of 1,000 and which is played out from December 2-5. The sale also witnesses the first part of the Waddesdon Stud dispersal, the pick from which could be Group 1 winner Thistle Bird, another in foal to Kingman. There is precious little, if any, time to get some Christmas shopping done between Tattersalls and Arqana, with the Deauville-based auction house beginning its run on December 7. There is at least, however, no Brexit-related disruption to contend with. There will very likely be at some point, but for now ‘no deal’ will simply mean a horse returns home without kerfuffle.

Height Of Elegance

7yo b Galileo-Brigid (Irish River) Goffs, lot 861; consigned by Grenane House The mare who arguably gave the late Peter Magnier the most success as an owner-breeder was Brigid, a daughter of Irish River from whom he bred the Moyglare Stud Stakes scorer Sequoyah, later the dam of 2,000 Guineas winner Henrythenavigator (right), and Fillies’ Mile heroine Listen (above), as well as two Tattersalls Book 1 sale-toppers in Liffey Dancer (2,500,000gns in 2007) and Nazym (1,700,000gns in 2011). Height Of Elegance, a seven-year-old Galileo mare who is the last registered daughter of Brigid, will be offered as part of a dispersal of the executors of Magnier – a rare chance to buy into one of the finest families in the stud book. Her runners include the smart Zoffany filly Zofelle, the winner of a valuable allowance race at Keeneland last month, and she is carrying to the Commonwealth Cup hero and first-crop sire Caravaggio.

HOT LIST

Ollie O’Donoghue selects six fillies and mares who leap off the page as potential headline makers

Could It Be Love

4yo b War Front-Maya (Arch) Goffs, lot 1000; consigned by The Castlebridge Consignment The Castlebridge Consignment has sold the most expensive filly or mare at the Goffs November Breeding Stock Sale for the past three years, and the operation could make it four from four with another solid draft of 28 of the best and brightest breeding prospects. Arguably the standout lot among its draft this year is Could It Be Love (below), a War Front half-sister to Uncle Mo who posted her highest Racing Post Rating of 110 when second to the exceptional miler Alpha Centauri in last year’s Irish 1,000 Guineas. The admirably consistent mare is believed in foal to Derby hero and sire Australia, whose two-year-old son King Carney showcased his Classic credentials with a taking success in the Listed Silver Tankard Stakes at Pontefract last month.

Thistle Bird

11yo b Selkirk-Dolma (Marchand De Sable) Tattersalls, lot 1515; consigned by The Castlebridge Consignment The Castlebridge Consignment has been entrusted with the dispersal of the late Lady Rothschild’s Waddesdon Stud and chief among those lots is Thistle Bird, who carried her owner-breeder’s distinguished navy and yellow silks to victory in the Group 1 Pretty Polly Stakes at the Curragh. The 11-year-old Selkirk mare is believed in foal to Kingman on a May cover and will be offered in the dispersal along with Magical Romance and Spinning Queen, who topped the bill at the 2006 Tattersalls December Sale when selling for a combined 7.6 million guineas.

Mabs Cross

5yo b Dutch Art-Miss Meggy (Pivotal) Tattersalls, lot 1818; consigned by Denton Hall Stables (Michael Dods) Following a nose defeat to Alpha Delphini in last year’s Nunthorpe, Mabs Cross made her deserved Group 1 breakthrough in the Prix de l’Abbaye less than two months later, making her one of three elite winners by her Cheveley Park Stud-based sire Dutch Art, along with fellow Group 1-winning sprinters and sires Garswood and Slade Power. Mabs Cross was bred by David Armstrong out of his Hilary Needler Trophy winner Miss Meggy, and she looks an attractive option for buyers looking for a speedy outcross mare, with Northern Dancer appearing only in the fifth generation of her pedigree. Dutch Art, whose oldest daughters are now ten, has shown promise as a broodmare sire with his daughters responsible for the likes of last season’s Middle Park Stakes runner-up Jash and the Group-winning trio Fas, Silva and Yulong Gold Fairy.

Snowflakes

4yo br/gr Galileo-Laddies Poker Two (Choisir) Goffs, lot 997; consigned by The Castlebridge Consignment From the same vendor as Could It Be Love comes this year-younger sister of four-time Group 1-winning miler Winter, the dual Guineas heroine who also struck in the Coronation and Nassau Stakes, before going down fighting to Hydrangea in the Matron Stakes. Snowflakes and Winter are by Galileo and out of the smart sprinter Laddies Poker Two, who pulled off a famous gamble for Jeremy Noseda and the Coolmore partners in the 2010 Wokingham Stakes. Snowflakes opened her own account in a Cork maiden over an extended mile as a three-year-old and is offered in foal to US Navy Flag, the three-time Group 1 winner who himself is out of a Galileo mare, meaning the resulting foal will be inbred 3x2 to the perennial champion sire.

Coplow

10yo ch Manduro-Anna Oleanda (Old Vic) Tattersalls, lot 1834; consigned by Stowell House Stud Buyers at Tattersalls will be presented with the opportunity to purchase the dam of a Classic winner as Stowell Hill Partners, the owners of Billesdon Brook, have decided to send her dam Coplow into the ring at Park Paddocks, where she will be offered in foal to Kingman. The sophomore sire sensation also covered Billesdon Brook’s year-older Dick Turpin half-sister and stakes scorer Billesdon Bess this year. Last year’s 1,000 Guineas winner Billesdon Brook (red cap) confirmed the top-class talent she showed as a three-year-old with a resolute win in this year’s Group 1 Sun Chariot Stakes when she defeated a high-class field including the likes of Veracious, Iridessa, Laurens and Hermosa.

Zidane and Frizzante, while he was also visited by the Oh So Sharp Stakes winner Souter’s Sister (1118). If Highland Reel, who battled with so many of the above, can transmit his tenacity to his progeny, then Coolmore will have a hit on their hands. The hard-knocking globetrotter, offered at €17,500, was used by plenty of knowledgeable breeders with Goffs listing a half-sister to the dam of the equally durable Alive Alive Oh (404), while Tattersalls has a half-brother to US stakes performer Feel Glorious (722). Decorated Knight, from the illustrious Galileo-Storm Cat line, took three Group 1s during the same time as those rivals and headed to the Irish National Stud. That operation stands firmly behind him at Goffs with three of his ten entries, including a son of the twice-winning French mare Neuquen (220). A link with his racing owners Saleh Al Homaizi and Imad Al Sagar is maintained by his only lot at Tattersalls, a colt out of their Princess Margaret Stakes scorer Princess Noor (955).

Tom Peacock looks at the stallions with their first foals up for auction this year

W

HILE we have been immersed in the period of deals and fees being completed for the latest generation of stallions to have stepped off the racecourse, those who embarked upon their second careers in 2018 face a formative test in the ring when their first foals set foot in public. Although there is not quite a new entry arriving with the razzmatazz of a Frankel or a Sea The Stars, some of the eminent names of this year’s crop are marked out by their tenacity, with a host of high achievers from several captivating seasons of middle-distance clashes as well as Guineas winners, speedballs and sons from some of the most cherished bloodlines including Galileo, Dubawi, Invincible Spirit and Scat Daddy.

Classic class

Almanzor joined his father Wootton Bassett at Haras d’Etreham at €35,000 for 2018, priced co-highest in Europe of the latest intake with a full first book limited to 140 mares. One of a few French giants to join the stallion ranks, his offspring are in fairly scarce supply away from home at this stage. Jean-Claude Rouget’s superstar, who took the French Derby as well as the Ascot and Leopardstown editions of the Champion Stakes, has a small Tattersalls offering include a filly (lot 618) out of a half-sister to the accomplished Elusive Kate. Kilcarn Park’s filly from the family of French Oaks winner Rafha (394) is among a trio at Goffs. Zarak, the impeccably bred product of a meeting between Dubawi and Zarkava who took the Grand Prix de Saint-Cloud, has an even smaller supply at Tattersalls but at Goffs they include a grandson of the wonderful producer Foodbroker Fancy (622) and a close relative of Arc winner Sagamix (503). As a resident of Cheveley Park Stud, Ulysses is in the right place to succeed. He boasts not only the genes of

Almanzor wins at Ascot (top, and clockwise from centre right) Ulysses, Postponed, Highland Reel and Zarak

Galileo but those of Mr Prospector and Miesque through his dam, the Oaks winner Light Shift. Nursed back to his best by Sir Michael Stoute after looking too inexperienced for the Derby, Ulysses took both the Eclipse and Juddmonte International as well as performing commendably against Enable.

Among his most current progeny at Tattersalls are Cheveley Park Stud’s colt out of a half-sister to this year’s Richmond Stakes winner Golden Horde ((left, 915), while those at Goffs include the first foal out of a sister to Almanzor (581) and a half-brother to Champagne Stakes winner Seahenge ((666).

Dubawi’s Postponed, another authentic middle-distance champion from the King George to the Juddmonte International, is new to Dalham Hall and had a first book of 112 mares. A notable inclusion at Tattersalls is a son of the Dansili mare Frangipanni (972), a member of the sprinting family of

Churchill is the latest big-ticket Galileo to reach the marketplace for Coolmore, earning champion juvenile honours through victories in the National Stakes and the Dewhurst and going on to take both the English and Irish 2,000 Guineas the following year. Also standing at a 2018 fee of €35,000, his Goffs offerings include a son of Queen Mary Stakes-placed Hairy Rocket (677) and a half-brother to the Group 3 Amethyst and Gladness Stakes winner Onenightidreamed (757). He was also visited by the Acclamation mare Anklet, whose two Australia fillies sold for eyewatering amounts at Book 1 and whose son sells at Tattersalls (728). Fellow Guineas winner Galileo Gold takes his maiden steps for Tally-Ho, with more than 150 mares on his dance card at the first instance. Included in a raft at Goffs are a daughter of veteran mare Red Fuchsia, whose son Red Badge won a Group 3 (1346), and a son of champion Italian juvenile Shifting Place (295). A colt at Tattersalls is a half-brother to Hurricane Ivor (815), who made a scintillating debut in France this year. Time Test, a dual Group 2 winner for Juddmonte in Britain and placed in Grade 1 company in America, has returned to his roots to stand at the National Stud and was

Kildangan and this Iffraaj outcross gathered 154 mares to get him started. They are divided neatly with at least 20 selling at each auction house. A colt from the immediate family of Godolphin’s Dubai World Cup star Moon Ballad (828) stands out at Tattersalls, with his Goffs portfolio including a colt out of a full-sister to the very smart Venus De Milo (584).

Speed of the essence

Darley’s Kildangan Stud branch will be hoping one of their newbies will be Profitable in more than name only. The top sprinter had a first book of 179 mares at a €12,000 cover and is the most widely represented of all those

to feature with 56 selling across both events. Although Profitable won as a juvenile for trainer Clive Cox and scored in Listed company as a three-year-old, it was not until he was an older horse that he became a star of the sprinting division, taking the Temple Stakes and the King’s Stand in 2016 and running second to Lady Aurelia in the latter event the following year. His noteworthy entries at Tattersalls include a colt out of the Listed winner Law Of The Range (887) and one produced by a half-sister to the Queen Mary Stakes winner Signora Cabello (771). At Goffs he has a half-brother to the consistent Listed-scorer Majestic Myles (670). Coolmore’s heir apparent to

the late Scat Daddy is the rapid Caravaggio, blistering winner of the Coventry and Phoenix Stakes at two who went on to defeat Harry Angel and Blue Point in a captivating running of the Commonwealth Cup. Standing for €35,000 in 2018, there will be big expectations when his first crop reach the racecourse in 2021, and there are 37 chances to get a piece of him on both sides of the Irish Sea. Included among the dispersal of the late Peter Magnier at Goffs is a colt out of a Galileo half-sister to the top-class Izzi Top (right, 597) from the cherished Meon Valley Stud family. There is also a grandson of Falmouth winner Music Show (553). Tattersalls includes a

filly out of Brazilian Group 1 winner Energia Fox (852), a colt out of the Listed winner Riskit Fora Biskit (881), and a half-brother to Listed Land O’Burns Fillies’ Stakes winner Sugar Free (1003). A more left-field son of Scat Daddy is El Kabeir,, a multiple

Graded winner in the US who has been shrewdly imported to stand at Yeomanstown. He was fully booked at a more pragmatic €8,000 with Ballylinch selling a daughter of its Italian stakes-class Avomcic (66) at Goffs. Among Overbury’s boast for Ardad is that he took the 2016 Windsor Castle in a quicker time than Profitable in the King’s Stand, with the John Gosden-trained Kodiac colt going on to take the Flying Childers at Doncaster. An easy sell for the Gloucestershire operation with a first book of 132 mares, he has the biggest representation at Tattersalls with 40. Among them are a half-sister to Coventry ( runner-up Headway (714). Molecomb winner Cotai

Glory has been a busy boy at Tally-Ho, covering more than 180 mares at a 2018 fee of €6,000, and his 36 foals at Goffs gives him the largest representation there of all first-crop sires. A match-up with Cheveley Park scorer Carry On Katie (90) ought to have produced a speedy filly. National Defense, the son of Invincible Spirit currently shuttling in Australia from the Irish National Stud, attracted plenty of black-type mares. He has a filly at Tattersalls out of a full-sister to St Leger scorer Milan (1147). Kool Kompany, who stands in Spain and is best known as a speedy Richard Hannon juvenile, has four chances to get his name across at Park Paddocks.

The male line. Nurturing it, from the Darley Arabian onwards, is how the thoroughbred has grown faster. Retiring to stud at Darley for 2020 are three colts with the genes and mental attributes to have made it to the peak of the breed: a multiple record-breaking sprinter, a fast two-year-old who went on to win the Derby, and a European Champion juvenile and top-rated three-year-old. What’s more, they are all sons of exceptional Darley stallions. Think of them as the next in line, an incremental honing on the way to the champions of tomorrow. Clearly amazing? We think so...

BREEDING STOCK SALES

TWO FOR ONE

MARES IN FOAL TO THIS YEAR’S NEW WAVE OF SIRES Ollie O’Donoghue on the breeding-stock offerings for 2019’s crop of stallions

T

HE most expensive stallion retired to stud this year was not to be found in Europe but across the pond in Kentucky, where US Triple Crown hero Justify took up residence at Coolmore’s Ashford Stud at a fee of $150,000. Buyers at Tattersalls will surely be hot on the trail of Butterscotch (lot 1829), the only mare listed in foal to the son of Scat Daddy at the December Mare Sale, and she can be expected to foal down early in the spring as she was covered in February. The Castlebridge Consignment has been entrusted with the four-year-old daughter of Galileo, a half-sister to Coach House, who finished second to subsequent Group 1 winner Clemmie in the Group 3 Balanchine Stakes at the Curragh as a juvenile. The priciest retiree to stud in

Europe this year was the ill-fated Roaring Lion, a son of Kitten’s Joy who covered a glittering book of mares at Tweenhills at a £40,000 fee. Nine mares covered by last season’s Horse of the Year are listed for sale, eight at Tattersalls and one at Goffs, and many boast strong performance records and pedigrees. Among those set to come under the hammer at Park Paddocks will be West Blagdon Stud’s two-time winner Stream Song (1454), a Mastercraftsman half-sister to British Champions Day scorer Journey out of the Prix Royal-Oak heroine Montare, and Bugley Stud’s placed Galileo mare With Good Grace (1491), a half-sister to the Golden Jubilee Stakes scorer Art Connoisseur from the family of Balanchine. Two others joined the Tweenhills roster for the 2019 breeding season – Lightning Spear, a son of Pivotal who made his deserved Group 1 breakthrough in last year’s Sussex Stakes as a seven-year-old, and Zoustar, a son of Northern Meteor who stood his first northern hemisphere season as his progeny continued their fine run in his native Australia. Lightning Spear has four mares listed in foal at Tattersalls including Molly

Mayhem (1981), a Casamento half-sister to the smart Siyouni filly Spectre from Glebe Farm Stables. Among those to have visited Australian sire sensation Zoustar are the Goffs-bound Zakhrafa (973), a seven-year-old Shamardal mare offered by Mount Coote Stud, and Always A Drama (1662) at Tattersalls, a Red Jazz

mare from Norris Bloodstock who is a half-sister to Endless Drama, who landed three Group 2 prizes in Australia and New Zealand.

Coolmore crown jewels

Apart from Justify, Coolmore also welcomed a quartet of new recruits closer to home with 2,000 Guineas winner Saxon Warrior joined by fellow

Group 1 winners US Navy Flag and Sioux Nation at their base in Tipperary, along with the well-bred Group 2 winner Gustav Klimt. Saxon Warrior became the first British Classic winner for his sire Deep Impact after he struck at Newmarket, which added to his success in the Racing Post Trophy (now the Vertem Futurity), and he has

no fewer than 16 mares in foal at Goffs and Tattersalls. Of the seven heading to Goffs, Kiltinan Castle Stud will offer the Monsieur Bond mare Gilt Edge Girl (949), who is best known for her Prix de l’Abbaye win, although she has also produced the Listed scorer Time’s Arrow, while of the nine destined for Newmarket, Ballyhimikin Stud

half-sister to the four-time Group 1 winner Winter who sent shivers down the spines of her rivals during a glittering three-year-old campaign that included Guineas wins on both sides of the Irish Sea. Sioux Nation has the same number of mares in foal at both sales as US Navy Flag, with Trickledown Stud sending the Declaration Of War mare

Like Gustav Klimt, another from the Eljazzi clan to retire to stud this year was James Garfield, the Mill Reef Stakes scorer who joined the Rathbarry Stud roster, and his first foals will hit the ground next spring.

Darley delights

Sheikh Mohammed’s Darley operation rolled out the blue carpet at Dalham Hall for dual Champion Stakes scorer Cracksman, world champion sprinter Harry Angel and Coral-Eclipse hero Hawkbill. Cracksman captured the Ascot feature in 2017 and 2018, following on from the success of his own sire Frankel in the race in 2012, and eight mares will be offered in foal to the Dalham Hall stallion at Tattersalls. Among the Shadwell draft is

Fawaayed (1354), a Singspiel half-sister to the Queen Mary Stakes scorer and Guineas third Maqaasid who is pregnant on an early-April cover, while Upperwood Farm Stud will consign Mascarene (1372), a placed Empire Maker mare out of the Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Turf heroine Intercontinental, whose own dam is the legendary producer Hasili. Harry Angel is the best represented of any 2019 sire at the Goffs and Tattersalls breeding-stock sales with no fewer than 18 in-foal mares lined up for a date with the Tattersalls auctioneer. The Elms Stud is the vendor of Mondiva (1373), a Bertolini half-sister to the Prix du Cadran winner Molly Malone, who in turn is the dam of Morgan Le Faye, while Glidawn Stud is the consignor of Samaah (1394), a Cape Cross half-sister to Kingsgate Native who produced this season’s Sirenia Stakes third Huraiz.

Meanwhile, the Kitten’s Joy stallion Hawkbill, who precedes his paternal half-brother Roaring Lion on the Coral-Eclipse roll of honour, has a sole lot on offer at Tattersalls, with Old Buckenham Stud set to offer Lemon Sophia (1925), an unraced daughter of the smart Oasis Dream mare Anna Sophia.

Expert credentials

As well as its stallions enjoying a stellar season on the track with their progeny, Juddmonte’s Banstead Manor Stud welcomed the arrival of Expert Eye, who hit the heights in last year’s Breeders’ Cup Mile at Churchill Downs. Pitched in at a £20,000 fee, the son of Acclamation has 17 mares on offer at Park Paddocks and another two at Goffs, with the Aga Khan Studs set to present Harzand’s half-sister Haziyna (938) at the latter. The Halling mare was

second in the Group 3 Give Thanks Stakes at Cork during her own racing career, and has a yearling Fastnet Rock filly and Golden Horn filly foal in the pipeline. There are some similarly appealing mares in foal to Expert Eye at Tattersalls, with Juddmonte to offer Midday’s winning half-sister Popular (1481), an Oasis Dream mare who has already come up trumps with the Listed-placed In Favour, and Queen’s Charter (1395), an unraced Oasis Dream half-sister to Queen’s Trust, featuring among the Barton Stud draft.

Need for speed

Group 1-winning sprinters Havana Grey and Unfortunately found berths at Whitsbury Manor and Cheveley Park Stud this year, although the latter has since moved on to Oak Lodge Stud ahead of the 2020 breeding season. The two went toe-to-toe in the 2017 Prix Morny, with the

Galileo’s girls and sibling to Group 1-winning graduate lead the way AS A MARK of the quality of this year’s Goffs November Sale, the most represented sire of fillies and mares during the breeding-stock section is none other than Galileo, with 19 of his daughters listed for auction at Kildare Paddocks. The perennial champion is damsire of runners in Europe who have accumulated in excess of £8 million in prize-money this season, his daughters having produced

Group 1 stars Ghaiyyath, Magna Grecia, Sottsass and Watch Me. Galileo is second only to Pivotal in the broodmare sire stakes in Europe, and the latter has ten daughters on offer at the November Breeding Stock Sale, while Shamardal, who came up trumps as damsire of the Haydock Sprint Cup scorer Hello Youmzain, has a dozen scheduled to come under the hammer.

The November Foal Sale is also jam-packed with quality, not least with the full-brother to 2015 top lot Ghaiyyath, who counted both parents Dubawi and Nightime and his half-sister Zhukova as Group 1 winners before he even stepped foot on a racecourse. He upheld family honour this season with an emphatic win in the Grosser Preis von Baden in Germany.

Expect plenty of quality foals and breeding stock on show from leading vendors including the Aga Khan Studs, Airlie, Ballylinch, Baroda, Derrinstown, Godolphin, Irish National, Moyglare, Norelands, Owenstown, Rathbarry, Redmondstown, Staffordstown, The Castlebridge Consignment and Tinnakill House, for what promises to be a bumper edition of the auction.

BREEDING STOCK SALES GOFFS

Ten chances to snap up a foal by young sensation No Nay Never

An Invincible Spirit half-brother to Listed scorer Rose De Pierre (right) is catalogued as lot 763

Mad about the Moyglare gems on offer BARN E, where the Moyglare Stud draft will be housed during the Goffs November Sale, looks set to be a hive of activity with a trio of foals and three more fillies and mares among its select annual offering. The vendor was the leading consignor by average at last year’s Goffs November Breeding Stock Sale with five lots bringing in total receipts of €526,000 at an average spend of €105,200, including the Listed-placed Invincible Spirit mare I’m Yours who sold in foal to Ribchester for €210,000 to Katsumi Yoshida. The operation also sold Romantic Venture for €40,000 in 2008, and she has since gone on to produce the Irish 2,000 Guineas hero Romanised and the Italian Group 3 winner Rock Of Romance. Among the three foals from Moyglare are a March-born Dark Angel colt out of Mad About You (lot 722), who placed

multiple times in Group 1 company including the Irish 1,000 Guineas and Moyglare Stud Stakes, and a May-foaled Invincible Spirit half-brother to the Listed scorer Rose De Pierre (763) out of the multiple Group 3 winner Profound Beauty, with both foals tracing back to Moyglare’s foundation mare Aptostar. Another to trace back to Aptostar is the four-year-old Dream Ahead filly Smile Ahead (979), a half-sister to the smart Pattern performer Making Light who will be offered by Moyglare at the Goffs November Breeding Stock Sale, where she will be joined by Frosty Beach (978), a three-year-old Footstepsinthesand filly who opened her account in a mile Naas handicap in June, and Firey Flower (977), a three-year-old Lemon Drop Kid half-sister to the Group 3 Golden Fleece Stakes runner-up Firey Speech.

NO NAY NEVER, riding high in the sophomore sire rankings in Europe this year with progeny earnings in excess of £2 million, has had his fee hiked up to €150,000 for next year. Among the Coolmore stallion’s 49 winners this season – which have come at a clip of 42 per cent – is his first-crop son Ten Sovereigns, who added a second Group 1 to his haul in the July Cup, and two stars from the sire’s second crop in Mystery Power and Shadn, both of whom struck in Group 2 company. Mystery Power and Shadn were both sold by Seskin Stud at the 2017 Goffs November Foal Sale, where the former realised €110,000 from Oaks Farm and the latter made €16,000 from Hill Farm. Among the sire’s ten-strong group of foals destined for Part One of this year’s November Foal Sale is a full-brother to Mystery Power (lot 672) from Whitehall Stud. Breeder Siobhan O’Rahilly has bred three runners with a Racing Post Rating of 100 or more out of the three-time winner Gems, a daughter of

Haafhd sourced privately for €5,500 at the 2013 Goffs February Sale, with Mystery Power a half-brother to the French Group 3-placed Seaella and the handicap specialist Fayez. Other No Nay Never foals to catch the eye include the second produce out of the Listed-winning Thewayyouare mare We Are Ninety (590), with the April-foaled youngster to be offered as part of the dispersal of the late Peter Magnier, and a March-born colt out of the Danehill mare Al Ihsas (601) who will be offered by Applewood Stud on behalf of Suzanne Macken, with the dam having finished second to Romantic Myth in the millennium running of the Queen Mary Stakes. No Nay Never is

also the covering sire of three mares on offer during the Goffs Breeding Stock Sale, with Norelands to offer the accomplished producer Steel Princess (971), a Danehill mare responsible for three stakes scorers led by Group 1 Canadian International winner Sarah Lynx. The Castlebridge Consignment, meanwhile, will offer Zagitova (998), a Group 2-placed Galileo mare and half-sister to Garswood, and the dual Group 3 winner Actress (1001), who shares her sire Declaration Of War with recent Melbourne Cup hero Vow And Declare.

Shadn: a Group 2 winner from the second crop of No Nay Never who sold here in 2017 for €16,000

Brother to Ghaiyyath sure to be major draw

Night to remember with flying freshman sire BREAKTHROUGH freshman stallion Night Of Thunder – who transfers from Dalham Hall to Kildangan Stud for the 2020 breeding season, when he will command a €25,000 fee – provided one of the best Goffs November foal graduates on the track this year with the Simon Crisford-trained juvenile filly Night Colours, who landed an Italian Group 2 on her most recent start. The first of her sire’s offspring to strike in Group 2 company, Night Colours was pinhooked by Harry Dutfield for €26,000 from her breeder Grenane House Stud, and buyers will have half a dozen opportunities to buy the sire’s offspring at this year’s Goffs November Foal Sale, including Limekiln Stud’s April-born colt out of Listed-placed Exceed And Excel mare Vitoria (lot 587). Derrinstown Stud, meanwhile, will offer the Listed-placed Oasis Dream mare Adhwaa (847) in foal to Night Of Thunder at the Goffs November Breeding Stock Sale.

Night Of Thunder: represented this year by star sale graduate Night Colours

Aga Khan Studs draft makes plenty of appeal BUYERS panning for gold among the Aga Khan Studs draft at this year’s Goffs November Breeding Stock Sale will take encouragement from results on the track this year. Marie’s Diamond, a three-year-old Footstepsinthesand colt who landed the Listed Pomfret Stakes at Salisbury in the summer, was bred by Tony Ashley out of Sindiyma, a daughter of the Aga Khan’s top-class middle-distance performer Kalanisi sourced for €20,000 here in 2013. Shadai Farm also got in on the act by

breeding this year’s Group 3 Prix d’Aumale winner Savarin, a Deep Impact filly bred from the Refuse To Bend mare Sarafina, whom Shadai Farm sourced privately from the Aga Khan Studs. There are plenty of opportunities to tap into the same source this year as among the bright breeding prospects on offer are Hardiyna (lot 937), an unraced Sea The Stars filly out of Silver Flash Stakes scorer Harasiya who is offered in foal to Rock Of Gibraltar. Hardiyna will be followed into the ring by

her dam’s Halling half-sister Haziyna (938), one of five stakes performers out of the Athasi Stakes scorer Hazariya along with the dual Derby hero and sire Harzand. Haziyna is the dam of two winners and was covered by Expert Eye this spring. Zanoubiya (943), whose best performer has been the 2015 Give Thanks Stakes winner Zannda, is another who makes plenty of appeal with an April cover to Awtaad, as does Mouneera (988), a twice-raced Dawn Approach half-sister to the Sydney Cup hero Mourayan.

ONE lot sure to have the big buyers out in force will be the Dubawi full-brother to former Goffs graduate Ghaiyyath (below), who topped the bill at €1.1 million at the 2015 Goffs November Sale, with the March-foaled chestnut colt (lot 745) set to be offered by The Castlebridge Consignment. A son of the Irish 1,000 Guineas heroine Nightime, Ghaiyyath had much to live up to before he ever stepped foot on a racecourse, with his Fastnet Rock half-sister Zhukova successful in the Man o’ War Stakes at Belmont Park in May 2017. Since then Charlie Appleby’s charge has gone on to win five of his eight starts in the royal blue of Godolphin, including an astonishing 14-length win in this season’s Grosser Preis von Baden and another victory in the Group 2 Prix d’Harcourt at Longchamp. What makes his achievements this season all the more remarkable is that he raced only once at three, when successful in the Group 3 Prix du Prince d’Orange at Longchamp.

Bumper year on the track with three Classic winners leading the way NO FEWER than three Classic winners this season emerged from the Tattersalls December Foal Sale, with Magna Grecia and Phoenix Of Spain winning the English and Irish 2,000 Guineas, and Star Catcher successful in the Irish Oaks as well as picking up Group 1 prizes in Britain and France. They were augmented by Blue Point, a graduate of the 2014 auction who joined an exclusive club to have completed the

King’s Stand-Diamond Jubilee Stakes double at Royal Ascot, with Choisir the only other to have done so in the post-war era. Furthermore, the December Yearling Sale graduate Zabeel Prince made his Group 1 breakthrough in the Prix d’Ispahan at Longchamp in May, while fellow auction graduate Royal Dornoch took out the Royal Lodge Stakes in late September.

This year’s December Yearling Sale on November 25 is highlighted by the Dubawi colt out of Irish St Leger winner Voleuse De Coeurs and the Galileo colt out of the regally bred Sent From Heaven. Among the standout lots in the foal segment is the Galileo half-brother to 2017 Poule d’Essai des Pouliches winner Precieuse and a Frankel colt who is the first foal out of the St Leger heroine Simple Verse.

The December Sale concludes with the mares’ section, which is billed as “the world’s most international bloodstock sale”. Among the standout lots are the Prix de l’Abbaye heroine Mabs Cross, Pretty Polly Stakes star Thistle Bird and 1,000 Guineas winner Billesdon Brook’s dam Coplow, with the latter pair to be offered in foal to Juddmonte’s sophomore sire sensation Kingman.

Mabs appeals as speedy outcross

THE Group 1-winning sprinter Mabs Cross (below, lot 1818), a five-year-old daughter of Dutch Art, will be consigned from trainer Michael Dods’ Denton Hall Stables on behalf of owner David Armstrong. Mabs Cross – who is free from Northern Dancer within her first four generations – is out of the Listed Hilary Needler Stakes winner Miss Meggy, a Pivotal half-sister to the Grade 3 Senorita Stakes winner Charlie Em. The seven-time winner was successful in the Prix de l’Abbaye last October, which followed on from placed efforts in the Nunthorpe and King’s Stand Stakes. She also landed the Group 3 Palace House Stakes twice, and in total won four stakes races as well as being placed in a further eight.

BREEDING STOCK SALES TATTERSALLS

Waddesdon Stud dispersal sure to focus the attention

THE first stage of the complete dispersal of stock from the Rothschild family’s Waddesdon Stud will be among the highlights of the Tattersalls December Mare Sale. The Castlebridge Consignment has been entrusted with the initial draft, which comprises 14 mares in foal and two fillies in training. Heading the 16-strong team is Group 1 winner Thistle Bird (lot 1515), who is in foal to the outstanding young sire Kingman. Trained for Lady Rothschild by Roger Charlton, Thistle Bird ended her racing career on a high with victory in the 2013 Pretty Polly Stakes at the Curragh. Dolma, her stakes-winning dam (1505) who is in foal to Sea The Moon, will join her in the dispersal.

TATTERSALLS DECE F

In total, eight of the 14 Waddesdon mares heading to this year’s December Sale are black-type winners, including the regally bred Group 1 winners Magical Romance (1508) and Spinning Queen (1513), both stakes producers and in foal to Gleneagles and Nathaniel respectively. The six other mares are all either produced by or sisters of Group 1 winners, including Rocksavage (1512) and Willoughby (1517), who are half-sisters to the Group 1 winners Nathaniel, Playful Act and Great Heavens out of Magnificient Style. The two fillies in/out of training comprise the winning three-year-old Kodiac filly Gallic (1506), out of Spinning Queen’s Listed-winning

Rare opportunity to buy Classic producer – and she’s in foal to hotshot Kingman

Oaks heroine Anapurna (white cap) is a half-sister to Fly To The Top, who is to be offered in foal to Mukhadram on an April cover

Carlton Stud to cash in on success of Anapurna IT WAS at last year’s Tattersalls Ascot November Sale that Carlton Stud’s Adam Wragg snapped up the Meon Valley Stud castoff Fly To The Top for a mere £2,500, with her year-younger half-sister Anapurna similarly described as unraced in the catalogue. Since then Anapurna has become the first British Classic winner for her sire Frankel with a resolute win in the Oaks, to give Fly To The Top that all-important pedigree boost. And now Carlton Stud looks likely to turn a nice

profit when it sends Fly To The Top (lot 1470) into the ring at the Tattersalls December Mare Sale, with the four-year-old daughter of Mastercraftsman in foal to Mukhadram on an April cover. Wragg, who owns Carlton Stud with his father Graham, said of buying Fly To The Top: “I was hoping to find some strong bloodlines – she certainly stood out on that score – and then I noticed Anapurna on the page, her sister by Frankel who was two then and unraced. Being by Frankel I hoped she’d be good.”

COPLOW, the dam of 1,000 Guineas and Sun Chariot Stakes heroine Billesdon Brook, is to be offered in foal to Kingman – the progenitor of such talents as Persian King, Calyx and Headman – at the Tattersalls December Mares Sale. The ten-year-old Coplow (lot 1834), whose first two foals are the Listed-winning Billesdon Bess, who sold for 800,000gns at last year’s Tattersalls December Sale, and the outstanding Billesdon Brook will be offered on the Tuesday of selling by Jeanette McCreery’s Stowell Hill Stud on behalf of the Stowell Hill Partners. By world champion and sire Manduro, the regally bred Coplow is herself the half-sister to the Group 3-winning trio of Anna Nerium, Middle Club and Piping Rock, all of whom raced in the famous McCreery colours. Her dam Anna

Oleanda is out of the German champion juvenile and three-year-old filly Anna Paola and appropriately by Irish Derby and Prix du Jockey Club winner Old Vic, who was also bred by McCreery’s late husband Bob. In foal to the hugely exciting Kingman on a March cover and believed to be carrying a colt, Coplow has a two-year-old daughter of Sepoy in training with Richard Hannon alongside her Classic-winning half-sister Billesdon Brook, and also has a colt foal by Dubawi, who is the sire of Anna Nerium.
