AN UNMISSABLE OPPORTUNITY U special supplement

PRIZED FILLIES AND MARES ON OFFER AS SHADWELL ENTERS A NEW ERA

H

AMDAN AL MAKTOUM is recognised as one of the foremost owners and breeders of recent times, with his thorough knowledge of pedigrees and deep understanding of the horse leading to wonderful success on the track. His instantly recognisable blue silks with white epaulets have been carried by turf legends such as Dayjur and Nashwan, world champions Invasor and Sakhee, and the recent superstar sprinters Battaash and Muhaarar. Pedigrees long nurtured by Sheikh Hamdan came to the fore once again on British Champions Day at Ascot last month, with Baaeed a brave winner of the Queen Elizabeth II Stakes and Eshaada triumphant in the British Champions Fillies & Mares Stakes. Since Sheikh Hamdan’s death in March, the global Shadwell breeding operation has undertaken a review of its business in an effort to focus on quality and competition at the highest level of the sport. Consequently, its broodmare band and string of fillies and mares in training is being reduced at key breeding-stock sales this autumn, while Sheikh Hamdan’s family maintains a streamlined breeding operation that will ensure his legacy endures for many years to come. Many of the lots available hail from families that were carefully cultivated by Sheikh Hamdan over successive generations, and helped him become champion owner in Britain on no fewer than seven occasions, and champion breeder three times. The historic partdispersal marks a new era for Shadwell and offers all breeders an unmissable opportunity to share in the farm’s proven success in producing top-class horses. In this special supplement we highlight some of the best families developed by Sheikh Hamdan, many of whose members are available to buy in the coming weeks, and show how Shadwell mares have already enriched other breeders’ strings. SHADWELL

‘New era for Shadwell offers breeders an unmissable opportunity to share in the farm’s proven success in producing top-class horses’

Al Bahathri

1982 ch m Blushing GroomChain Store (Nodouble) Al Bahathri was a mare very close to Sheikh Hamdan’s heart. The chestnut daughter of Blushing Groom, a $650,000 Keeneland July yearling purchase, was a brave frontrunner who so nearly made all in the 1,000 Guineas but was caught close home by future Triple Crown heroine Oh So Sharp. She made amends by becoming her owner’s first Classic winner when successful in the Irish 1,000 Guineas, and later added victories in the Coronation Stakes and Falmouth Stakes to her CV. Al Bahathri was such a favourite that when Sheikh Hamdan funded a new all-weather gallop at Newmarket he named it in her honour. The mare shone for Shadwell at stud too. She produced eight winners, including 2,000 Guineas and Champion Stakes victor Haafhd, Challenge Stakes scorer Munir and Coronation Stakes runner-up Hasbah. Her influence extended through her daughters, with

Almaaseh producing dual Group 1 hero Military Attack and Molecomb Stakes scorer Almaty, and appearing as ancestress of popular top-level winners Big Orange and Red Cadeaux, and Gmaasha becoming the dam of Dubai Duty Free winner Gladiatorus. Last month’s Bosra Sham Fillies’ Stakes winner Symphony Perfect is the latest smart performer to descend from Al Bahathri in the distaff line.

Desirable

1981 gr m Lord Gayle-Balidaress (Balidar) Desirable was bought as a yearling for just Ir10,000gns but her value rose sharply in the following years. The daughter of Lord Gayle won the Cheveley Park Stakes at two and ran third in the 1,000 Guineas at three, while her year-younger half-sister Park Appeal also scored in the Cheveley Park Stakes, as well as in the Moyglare Stud Stakes. Consequently, it took a bid of $1.6 million at Keeneland in November 1986 to secure her for the Shadwell broodmare band. As it turned out, it quickly proved to be money well

spent, as her first foal was the wonderful filly Shadayid, successful in the Prix Marcel Boussac at two and 1,000 Guineas at three, and placed in an unusual array of other Group 1 races – the Oaks, Coronation Stakes, Sussex Stakes, Haydock Sprint Cup and Queen Elizabeth II Stakes. Shadayid also struck gold with her first foal, the Prestige Stakes winner and 1,000 Guineas third Bint Shadayid, and she later produced the high-class pair Alshadiyah and Imtiyaz, plus Listed-placed Teeba, the future maternal granddam of Vosburgh Stakes winner Takaful. Shadayid meanwhile gained two half-brothers who won stakes races and became sires in Dumaani and Fath, while her ‘aunt’ Park Appeal made a name for herself as one of the most important broodmares of the last 40 years by producing Cape Cross and the dams of Diktat and Iffraaj.

Elle Seule

1983 ch m Exclusive Native-Fall Aspen (Pretense) A Group 2-winning daughter

of Exclusive Native and celebrated blue hen Fall Aspen, Elle Seule entered the Shadwell fold when bought for $1.5 million at the Keeneland November Breeding-Stock Sale of 1990. The mare was carrying to Nureyev at the time of her purchase, and the resultant foal was Irish 1,000 Guineas and Celebration Mile heroine Mehthaaf, who would go on to produce Premio Lydia Tesio winner Najah and the Listedplaced pair Tanaghum and Tasdeer. Tanaghum is, in turn, the dam of Group winners Bangkok, Matterhorn and Tactic, and the maternal granddam of dual champion miler Ribchester. Elle Seule later also produced for Shadwell the July Cup winner and useful sprint sire Elnadim, as well as the stakes-winning fillies Ashraakat and Khulood. The latter went on to produce Hurry Harriet Stakes scorer Adool. This family tree has blossomed through other branches too. Only Seule, one of the foals Elle Seule had produced

before her purchase by Sheikh Hamdan, bred champion Occupandiste and Listed winner Only Green. Occupandiste became the dam of Group 1 performers Mondialiste and Impressionnante, who produced Prix du Jockey Club victor Intello, while Only Green bred Group 2 winner and Classic-placed Shaman.

Height Of Fashion

1979 b m Bustino-Highclere (Queen’s Hussar) Sheikh Hamdan’s purchase of Height Of Fashion from the Queen in 1982 proved to be a pivotal moment in the foundation of Shadwell. The Group 2-winning daughter of Bustino and the Queen’s dual Classic heroine Highclere produced eight winners, all of whom gained black type, headed by the outstanding trio of Nashwan, Nayef and Unfuwain. Remarkably, Sheikh Hamdan bred Group 1 winners from each of those colts after they retired to stud: Aqaarid from Nashwan; Tamayuz from Nayef; and Alhaarth, Eswarah and Lahan from Unfuwain.

MATRIARCHS Shadwell drafts always a highlight

Shadwell magic (clockwise from left): Nayef (Height Of Fashion) with Sheikh Hamdan after winning the 2001 Champion Stakes; Cherry Hinton winner Asfurah (Manal); Bint Shadayid (Desirable) scores on her debut; Haafhd (Al Bahathri) wins the Champion Stakes in 2004; Bahri (Wasnah) wins the St James’s Palace Stakes

The three stallion brothers have also given Shadwell numerous accomplished broodmares. Height Of Fashion’s daughters also proved to be tremendously productive in their broodmare careers for the operation. Manwah produced stakes winners Mustanfar and Tadris and is granddam of classy sprinter Hot Streak, while Bashayer became the granddam of Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Turf winner Lahudood, who in turn is the granddam of the brilliant Baaeed and his Group 3-winning brother Hukum. Wijdan delivered stakes winners Makderah and Oriental Fashion, while Sarayir gave Shadwell the top-class trio Ghanaati, Mawatheeq and Rumoush, and is ancestress of Group 1 performers Maqaasid, Raheen House and Shraaoh. This is arguably Shadwell’s most successful family, certainly its most recognisable one, producing high-class horses year in, year out.

Manal

1979 b m Luthier-Top Twig (High Perch) Purchased by Tom Jones for

Sheikh Hamdan for $525,000 as a yearling at Keeneland in 1980, Manal showed little in three starts on the track but more than made up for that disappointment in her breeding career. The full-sister to Group 2 scorers and Group 1 runnersup Tip Moss and Twig Moss produced four winners at stud including Muhbubh, a Blushing Groom filly who caused a shock when beating the highly touted Kerrera to win the Princess Margaret Stakes. Muhbubh went on to produce Tom Fool Stakes winner Kayrawan, and through her daughters appears as ancestress of high-class performers Haatef, Magical Memory, Sandreamer and Shimah. Mathkurh, a winning daughter of Riverman and Manal, produced Cherry Hinton Stakes winner Asfurah and US Grade 3 scorer Istintaj, but it is Mathaayl, another winner by Shadeed out of Manal, who has given this page most depth. Mathaayl was the dam of Listed winner and Lancashire

Oaks runner-up Sahool, as well as daughters from whom high-class performers Gutaifan, Maraahel, Mustashry, Shades Of Blue and Ventura Storm descend. The abundant Manal family has borne even more stakeswinning fruit in 2021, in the shape of Don Chicco and Keeper Of Time.

Wasnah

1987 b m Nijinsky-Highest Trump (Bold Bidder) Wasnah, a daughter of Nijinsky and Queen Mary Stakes winner Highest Trump, was secured for $850,000 as a short yearling at the dispersal of Nelson Bunker Hunt’s stock at the Keeneland January Sale in 1988. She failed to win in six starts for John Dunlop, although she did finish second in the Pretty Polly Stakes, and she later vindicated Sheikh Hamdan’s faith in her in the Shadwell broodmare band. Wasnah’s very first foal was St James’s Palace Stakes and Queen Elizabeth II Stakes winner Bahri, from whom Shadwell would breed its exceptional Juddmonte International and Prix de

SHADWELL’S drafts of fillies and mares have always provided a highlight of the breedingstock sales down the years, and many other operations have bred top-class performers from their purchases. This year’s Commonwealth Cup winner Campanelle is a fine example of the opportunities available in those consignments. The flying filly was bred by Tally-Ho Stud out of Marygate Stakes scorer Janina, who was purchased by the farm for just 39,000gns at the Tattersalls July Sale in 2016. Lynch Bages bred last year’s Irish Derby winner Santiago and this season’s Yorkshire Oaks third La Joconde out of Wadyhatta, a winning Cape Cross halfsister to Prix du Jockey Club third Motamarris who h was bought b h by b Horse France for €275,000 at the Arqana Summer Sale of 2016.

l l’Arc de Triomphe hero S Sakhee. The mare went on to p produce five further winners, i including Champagne Stakes s scorer and Champion Stakes t third Bahhare, who sired a h handful of good horses at s stud. Her best b broodmare d daughters were the u unraced pair Istiqlal a Wissal. and Istiqlal, by Diesis, p produced Greenham S Stakes winner Muqbil a Prix de and S Sandringham runneru Mostaqeleh, and is up t ancestress of the P Pattern winners M Matera Sky, M Muthabara and R Rawaaq. Wissal, by W Woodman, delivered L Listed winners E Ethaara, Mudaaraah a Sudoor, as well as and s stakes-placed Muwaary a Yasmeen. Wissal’s and m maternal grandson Ribhi m marked himself out as an e exciting prospect by winning t of his three starts for two Ma cus Tregoning ego g this t s season. seaso . Marcus

On the day following Santiago’s Classic victory at the Curragh, Cayenne Pepper found only Magical too good in the Pretty Polly Stakes. The filly, later a four-length winner of the Blandford Stakes, was bred by GHS Bloodstock and JC Bloodstock out of Muwakaba, a winning daughter of Elusive Quality who was knocked down to Tom Malone for a mere £8,500 at an Ascot sale. The brilliant four-time Group 1 winner Ribchester was bred by Mike O’Brien and Andrew Thompson out of Mujarah, a daughter of Marju descended from Mehthaaf who cost 18,000gns at the Tattersalls December Mares Sale. The breeders sold Ribchester as a foal for €78,000. Mujarah’s dam Tanaghum was also sold by Shadwell, albeit for a fair bit more money. The Listed-placed daughter of Darshaan and Mehthaaf was bought by Barronstown Stud for €250,000 at the Goffs November

Sale, and her new owners have bred the high-class pair Bangkok and Matterhorn from the mare, and sold her Churchill yearling colt for 440,000gns at Tattersalls October Book 1 last month. Shadwell’s European broodmare drafts can be the source of success in quite surprising ways. Eltimaas, an unraced daughter of Ghostzapper who was sold to Gary Mudgway for 20,000gns at Tattersalls in 2010, was mated with Gio Ponti in the US to produce Drefong, an impressive winner of the King’s Bishop Stakes, Breeders’ Cup Sprint and Forego Stakes. It all goes to show that no stone should be left unturned when combing Shadwell’s drafts at the coming Goffs November and Tattersalls December breeding-stock sales for treasure.

Success story: Ribchester (Elle Seule) won four Group 1s
