SUMMER YEARLINGS Featuring the Arqana August, Goffs UK Premier and BBAG sales
Summer Yearlings
2
Welcome to the essential sales digest
F
OR many vendors across Europe the finish line is in sight. With the first wave of the region’s yearling sales, the culmination of many months of work draws ever nearer as young horses who have undergone meticulous preparation for these auctions are almost ready to be shown off to the world. Despite a challenging 2018, whose hot spell came not long after an equally cold snap, here they all are. In Doncaster, in Deauville and in BadenBaden, these industry heroes deserve our effusive thanks for their hard work. One hopes, despite concerns resulting from a turbulent breeze-up market, their hard work gets its just reward. Opportunities abound in the coming weeks and we hope Racing Post Bloodstock’s Summer Yearling supplement will provide all you need to enjoy a successful summer. Martin Stevens gets the lowdown from stud manager Henri Bozo on the ever popular draft from Ecurie des Monceaux, which has been blessed with some priceless late catalogue updates. I speak to Richard Spencer who, as part of the Rebel Racing team, has enjoyed remarkable success from the Goffs UK Premier Yearling Sale and is returning to Yorkshire looking for more this month. We wish you the very best of luck and look forward to seeing you on the circuit.

Outstanding trio set to steal the headlines GOLDEN HORN
A
TRIO of outstanding racecourse talents with persuasive pedigree claims headline the sires who will be represented by their first yearlings at the sales this summer: Golden Horn, whose four Group 1 victories encompassed the Derby and Arc; Gleneagles, a champion two-year-old who won the Newmarket and Curragh 2,000 Guineas and St James’s Palace Stakes at three; and Muhaarar, arguably the most dominant sprinter since Dayjur. The earlier yearling sales promise to show Muhaarar in particular in a good light, due in large part to the strong support one of France’s premier commercial breeders threw behind the son of Oasis Dream when he retired to Nunnery Stud at a generous looking fee of £30,000. The seal of approval Ecurie des Monceaux gave to Muhaarar is evident in the Arqana August Yearling Sale catalogue. Its draft at Deauville includes four by the sire, most notably a colt out of the Listed-winning Dansili mare Prudenzia (lot 16), who has had four lots sell for €1 million or more at the auction, including this season’s Ribblesdale Stakes winner Magic Wand but not including Chicquita, who was bought for €600,000 before she won the Irish Oaks and was resold for an Irish record €6m.
GLENEAGLES
The pages of the other three are just as powerful; a filly out of Prudenzia’s Group 3winning half-sister Pacifique (9), dam of €2.6m Arqana August record-priced yearling Parabellum; and a colt out of Beverly D Stakes winner Royal Highness (23) and thus a three-parts sister to the high-class middle-distance talent Free Port Lux. Monceaux also offers on behalf of clients a colt out of Group 3 scorer African Skies (70), making him a halfbrother to Listed winner Calypso Beat. The famed nursery is not the only one with well related Muhaarar offspring to sell in Deauville, though. Haras du Cadran has a filly who is the first foal out of Listed winner and Irish 1,000 Guineas fourth Avenue Gabriel (83) and Camas Park and Glenvale Studs consign a half-sister to Group 3 winner More Than Love (132). There are another four chances to secure blueblooded Muhaarar lots at Goffs UK Premier – a colt out of Lady Francesca, a Listed-placed half-sister to Purr Along (21); a colt who is the first foal out of dual Group 3 winner New Providence (131); a halfbrother to Listed scorer Bebhinn (149); and a filly out of Lowther Stakes victrix Infamous Angel (497). Golden Horn – by Cape Cross, whose son Sea The Stars goes from strength to strength
MUHAAR AR
as a sire – has eight lots on offer at the Arqana August Yearling Sale, including a half-sister to Group 1 winner Mille Et Mille (17), a half-brother to Listed scorer Sivoliere (31) and a filly out of Prix du Cadran heroine Molly Malone (168). One at Deauville who is bred to be good on the track and has significant residual value as a broodmare is the filly out of the Listed-winning Woodman mare First Fleet, making her a three-parts sister to Group 3 winner Sea Lord and half-sister to the classy pair French Navy and Ghardaiya (114). The next opportunity to purchase a Golden Horn yearling arises in BadenBaden, with a colt out of Ninfea, a Listed-placed half-sister to Novellist (80) catalogued for BBAG. Gleneagles – one of three Group 1 winners out of his exceptional dam You’resothrilling along with Happily and Marvellous – has representatives in the premier sessions at Deauville, Doncaster and Baden-Baden. Among his octet at Arqana is one with an all-important catalogue update – the half-sister to recent Prix Jean Prat winner Intellogent (8). Look out also for his colts out of Listed-winning Anabaa mare Gotlandia (123) and Listedwinning Dubai Destination mare Brasileira (276). Other Classic winners whose
debut yearlings come under the microscope in the coming weeks include Karakontie, Kingston Hill, Make Believe and Night Of Thunder. Ballylinch Stud showcases its dual Group 1-winning son of Makfi, Make Believe, with a filly out of the Grade 3winning Sir Percy mare Lady Pimpernel (144) at Arqana, while one by the sire in the Goffs UK Premier Sale who catches the eye is the colt out of the winning Invincible Spirit mare Stylish One (258). Night Of Thunder, by Makfi’s sire Dubawi, has five at Arqana including a half-sister to Royal Ascot winner GM Hopkins (60) and seven at Goffs UK Premier, one of them a colt out of Listed winner Semayyel (214). The likes of Anjaal, Brazen Beau, Cable Bay, Due Diligence, Fountain Of Youth, Gutaifan, Hot Streak, Ivawood and Outstrip will be many buyers’ bets to be adept at producing sharp and speedy stock in their own image, and many of their offspring are available to buy in Doncaster, the spiritual home of physically forward yearlings. There are also a few catalogue curiosities among the progeny of first-season sires – three lots by the subfertile G Force at the Goffs UK Premier Sale and a trio by the similarly fertilitychallenged The Wow Signal across Deauville and Doncaster.

Al Kazeem’s comeback continues Oakgrove Stud has enjoyed watching the first three-year-old runners by its own subfertile stallion, the homebred four-time Group 1 winner Al Kazeem, blossom this summer. The son of Dubawi has sired a glut of winners, including Aspetar in the Listed Cocked Hat Stakes and the promising Alexana and Al Kherb, while his consistent daughter Golden Spell has finished placed in Listed sprints. Al Kazeem does not have any two-year-olds as 2015 was the year when he returned to the track after being found to be getting an insufficient numbers of mares in foal at the Royal Studs and he landed his second Tattersalls Gold Cup. His current yearlings are the first bred after the stallion’s return to Oakgrove, and John Deer’s operation showcases what he produced that year in its first consignment to the Arqana August Yearling Sale since 2011.
The draft of two includes an Al Kazeem filly who is the second foal out of Pennard (15), a daughter of High Chaparral and Listed winner Lady Grace, who hails from the family of Falmouth Stakes heroine Giofra – the dam of last year’s Arqana August top lot, the €1.55 million colt by Dubawi. Oakgrove Stud’s other offering is a half-sister to Group 3 winner Be My Gal (151) from the debut crop of Golden Horn. She hails from the prolific family of Dutch Art. Local buyers in France should be enamoured by Al Kazeem and his remarkable comeback as those from Britain and Ireland, as he won the Prix d’ Harcourt and was second in the Prix Ganay after his return to the racetrack. France’s most expensive stallion justifying lofty fee Siyouni became the most expensive stallion ever to have stood in France this year when his fee was raised from €45,000 to €75,000 at the Aga Khan’s Haras de Bonneval in Normandy. The son of Pivotal has subsequently justified the price hike with Laurens having run out the winner of the Prix Saint-Alary and Prix de Diane, Finsbury Square winning the Prix du Gros-Chene and taking fourth in the King’s Stand Stakes and City Light landing the All-Weather Sprint Championships and Prix de Saint-Georges and being beaten a short head when second in the Diamond Jubilee. Deauville is the venue to attend for a wide selection of Siyouni yearlings: 25 in fact, who were conceived at a fee of €30,000. Among the highlights on paper are the half-brothers to Dabirsim (24), Naaqoos (44), National Defense (79) and Ocovango (102); colts out of Listed winner Hurryupharriet (130) and Group 3 scorer Oh Goodness Me (174); fillies out
Homerique half-sister sure to attract interest Homerique, who was beaten a neck and a nose into third place behind Laurens in the Prix de Diane in June and was a comfortable winner of the Group 3 Prix Psyche last month, was not sold as a foal at $34,000 at the Keeneland November Sale and was a 22,000gns vendor buyback at Book 2 of the Tattersalls October Yearling Sale before she was finally knocked down for €75,000 at the Arqana Breeze-Up Sale. The daughter of Exchange Rate’s exploits should ensure her yearling half-sister (97) at Deauville does not have to
contend with such indifference from buyers. The filly, who will be consigned by Haras d’Etreham, is by the Dynaformer stallion Temple City, responsible for Grade 1 winners Annals Of Time and Miss Temple City. Temple City has a fine European heritage as he is out of Curriculum, a daughter of Danzig and Prix Marcel Boussac winner Macoumba, who herself was a half-sister to Prix de la Foret winner Septieme Ciel out of Prix de la Salamandre winner and Irish 1,000 Guineas second Maximova.
Coulonces catalogue updates A filly out of Group 3 winner Aquamarine is one of 25 Siyouni yearlings on offer in Deauville this summer
of Listed winner Sivoliere (36), Group 3 winner Aquamarine (81) and another Group 3 winner in Majestic Dubawi (156). There is also a filly on offer out of a first-crop daughter of Siyouni, which is intriguing as
we all know what Siyouni’s sire Pivotal has achieved as a damsire. She is a daughter of New Approach from the fruitful Lagardere family of Val Royal, Valixir, Valyra, Vadamos, Vadapolina et al (306).
It is not just Ecurie des Monceaux that has had big catalogue updates for its draft at Deauville. Coulonces Sales will be offering a Zoffany half-brother to Look Around (154), a daughter of Kingman who since the Arqana August Yearling Sale entries were first uncovered has broken her maiden at Kempton and made all the running to win the
Listed Star Stakes at Sandown. The siblings are out of Magic America, a daughter of High Yield who was second to Dutch Art in the Prix Morny at two, won the Prix Imprudence by two lengths on her three-yearold bow and was among the favourites for the 2007 1,000 Guineas until being ruled out and ultimately retired due to a gallops injury in the days before the Newmarket Classic.
Bloodstock Pocket Post Friday, August 17, 2018
One of the themes of the 2018 Flat season has been the success of the Miesque clan on the track. Classic winners Alpha Centauri and Study Of Man directly descend from Stavros Niarchos’s mighty mare, as do Autocratic and Real Steel, who have finished placed in stakes races this year. King Edward VII Stakes winner Old Persian and Group 3 scorer Yucatan are meanwhile descended from Miesque’s dam Pasadoble. You might think it hard to get into the outstanding family of Miesque, a ten-time Group/ Grade 1 winner and dam of Classic victors Kingmambo and East Of The Moon. But, in fact, chances do turn up regularly and there are two at the Arqana August Yearling Sale. Camas Park and Glenvale Studs offer an Australia half-brother to ill-fated King Edward VII Stakes winner and Grand Prix de Paris runner-up Permian (52). Camas Park bought the dam Tessa Reef, a Listed-winning daughter of Mark Of Esteem and Miesque’s sister Massaraat, as a 15-year-old in foal to New Approach for 65,000gns from a

Darley dispersal in 2015. They soon got a profit on their purchase as the New Approach yearling colt being carried in-utero sold for €420,000 at Deauville in the wake of Permian’s exploits last year. Haras du Cadran consign a Gleneagles filly out of Elitiste (298), a winning Danehill
Dancer half-sister to Alpha Centauri. After bloodless victories in the Irish 1,000 Guineas, Coronation Stakes, Falmouth Stakes and Prix Jacques le Marois, Alpha Centauri is being hailed as the best three-yearold of either sex in Europe. Her sire Mastercraftsman is represented by five lots at the

It is not just the names of Hollywood stars that adorn the beach huts on Les Planches at Deauville that give the town a taste of America this year. Two lots on offer at Arqana hail from the first crop of Triple Crown and Breeders’ Cup Classic hero American Pharoah, both of them fillies. The first through the ring is a half-sister to Yorkshire Oaks heroine Shareta and three other stakes performers (34) from Haras d’Etreham. The second is a daughter of the Grade 3winning Smart Strike mare Marbre Rose (158). American Pharoah never raced on turf but his appeal to buyers intending to race in Europe might have been enhanced by his brother St Patrick’s Day, who has not been disgraced in two starts in stakes company for Aidan O’Brien.

Twenty Le Havre yearlings offer abundance of promise THE Normandy stallion ranks are blessed with a bonanza of high-class stallions at the moment and besides Siyouni the other biggest name is Le Havre, the Montfort et Preaux resident who is responsible for top-level winners Avenir Certain, La Cressonniere and Suedois, as well as the talented handicapper Tigre Du Terre, who has recently been sold to Hong Kong, and exciting two-year-old Boitron. Le Havre has achieved most of his success from covering fees between €5,000 and €7,000, so it whets the appetite for what he might achieve with his more expensively bred offspring. This season’s yearlings were bred off a fee of €35,000, up from €20,000 in 2015, and there are 20 in the Arqana August catalogue. Those with the strongest claims on paper include a colt out of Group 3 winner Sandbar (29), a half-brother to two winners from the wonderful Wildenstein family of Arcangues and Aquarelliste (250) and a colt out of Listedplaced Causa Proxima, a close
relation to Wings Of Eagles (282). Meanwhile, Coulonces Sales, who sold the future Prix du Jockey Club winner Le
Havre for €100,000 in Deauville 11 years ago, present a brother to the sire’s dual Classic-winning daughter La Cressonniere (68).
Coulonces Sales present lot 68 – a Le Havre brother to La Cressonniere
Five fillies and single colt fly flag for Galileo THE first place many prospective buyers will look when the Arqana August catalogue lands on their doormat is, understandably, the index of sires to see what progeny perennial champion sire Galileo has on offer. There are six such lots in Deauville this year – five fillies and one colt. The sole male is out of Falmouth Stakes winner Giofra, dam of last year’s €1.55 million sale-topping colt by Dubawi (121). The fillies are a daughter of the Grade 2-winning Giant’s Causeway mare Naissance Royale (1); a sister to Group 3 winner Tender Morn (51); a sister to Group 3 scorer Ernest Hemingway and three-parts sister to the smart Toulifaut (96); a daughter of Danedream’s Listed-placed half-sister Debutante (106); and a daughter of Nunthorpe heroine Margot Did, making her a sister to Group 2 winner Mission Impassible (159). Stars such as Age Of Aquarius, Lily Of The Valley, Magic Wand and Maybe are examples of progeny of Galileo sold as yearlings at Deauville in August. Maybe is dam of champion two-year-old and 2,000 Guineas hero Saxon Warrior.
Dubawi duo could hit magic seven-figure marker V2 Sale already has rich
STOCK by Dubawi are in demand all around the world and they have dominated proceedings in Deauville in recent years. In 2015 his colt out of the Group 3-winning Montjeu mare Pacifique smashed the sale record when sold to Godolphin for €2.6 million and last year his colt out of Giofra topped results at €1.55m. There are only two by Darley’s flagship sire available in Deauville this month, both first foals. One is a filly out of Cladocera, a daughter of Oasis Dream who was a dual Group 2 winner in Dubai and ran second in the Matron Stakes (98), from the vendor of last year’s Dubawi sale-topper, Haras de la Perelle.
list of big-race graduates
Dubawi stock is in heavy demand across the globe
The other is a colt out of Irish 1,000 Guineas and EP Taylor Stakes heroine Just The Judge (137), presented by La Motteraye Consignment.
Their rarity value in the catalogue should ensure those paternal half-siblings threaten the magical seven-figure mark when they enter the ring.
THE Arqana V2 Yearling Sale, held on August 21 immediately after three days of selling at the August fixture, was launched in 2013 with the intention of selling speedier and more forward produce. But it just so happens that the winners of this year’s Poule d’Essai des Poulains and Pouliches, Olmedo and Teppal, were available to buy at the 2016 V2 sale. Olmedo was purchased from the Haras des Capucines draft by trainer Jean-Claude Rouget for €100,000, while Teppal was pinhooked for €60,000 from the Haras
d’Ellon consignment and resold at the Arqana BreezeUp to Blandford Bloodstock for €105,000. That V2 catalogue in 2016 also contained this season’s Prix du Jockey Club runnerup Patascoy (bought by trainer Xavier ThomasDemeaulte for €40,000) and Group 3 winner and Pouliches fifth Barkaa (sold to MAB Agency for €66,000). This year’s auction comprises 140 lots, with the likes of Dabirsim, Dark Angel, No Nay Never, Siyouni and Wootton Bassett featuring in the index of sires.

Martin Stevens talks to Henri Bozo – manager of Normandy nursery Ecurie des Monceaux
I
F Ecurie des Monceaux were a horse, it would be Frankel. If it were a trainer; Aidan O’Brien. Jockey; Ryan Moore. The Normandy nursery is breathtakingly dominant in its field, selling yearlings in Deauville. Monceaux will this year bring its tenth draft to the Arqana August Yearling Sale. It has been the leading vendor by gross receipts every year since 2012 and did so by a margin of €7 million or more in each of the last three renewals. It has prepped and sold no fewer than 11 seven-figure lots at the auction and was responsible for selling the Dubawi colt who holds the record price of €2.6m, subsequent Grand Prix de Paris sixth Parabellum. Stars sold by Monceaux at Deauville in August include Chicquita, Ectot, Most Improved and National Defense, as well as this year’s closely beaten Poule d’Essai des Pouliches third Wind Chimes. The farm’s Group 1winning graduates Charm Spirit and Sistercharlie were sold at Arqana in October. The Monceaux draft at Arqana this month is, as usual, replete with relations to elite performers by blue-chip sires. But what is extraordinary this time is that three of the 35 lots have been subject to significant updates close to the top of their pages since the catalogue was published. The Gleneagles filly out of Nuit Polaire (8) is a half-sister to Intellogent, winner of the Prix Jean Prat last month; the Charm Spirit colt out of Starlet’s Sister (43) is a half-brother to Sistercharlie, who added victories in the Grade 1 Diana Stakes and Beverly D Stakes to her resume in recent weeks; and the Lope De Vega colt out of Black Dahlia (94) is a half-brother to Dark Vision, who stormed to success in the Vintage Stakes at Glorious Goodwood. The updates have not appeared by coincidence, insists Monceaux manager Henri Bozo. “This is exactly what we’ve

been aiming for – improving the broodmare band and the efficiency of results,” he says. “Our goal is to build up a broodmare band full of lively pedigrees that are frequently producing top-class horses, so I’m delighted.” Monceaux sells only horses who have been raised on the farm, whether they were bred by the farm itself, by its clients or partnerships between both parties. “I’m always on the farm and have seen the horses since they were born, so I know them thoroughly,” Bozo says. Of the Gleneagles half-sister to Intellogent, a €320,000 Arqana August graduate, he reports: “She’s full of quality. She’s always been a lovely, strong filly and a good walker. There’s no knocking the dam – she’s been a remarkable servant to the farm. The family keeps coming up with good horses, it’s a current pedigree.” Nuit Polaire – a Kheleyf half-sister to Oaks d’Italia winner Night Of Magic, the dam of German horse of the year Nightflower, and to Neele, the dam of Group 1 winners Nutan and Nymphea – was bought by Monceaux as a yearling in Deauville for €100,000. She is also related to German Oaks-winning mother and daughter Night Petticoat and Next Gina, and Hong Kong celebrity Pakistan Star. Moving on to the Charm Spirit half-brother to Sistercharlie, Bozo says: “He’s a classy, forward type – very
strong – and he walks well and looks like he could be quite precocious. He’s also a half-brother to My Sister Nat, a close second in the Prix Chloe last month to Crown Walk, who went on to run second in the Prix Rothschild.” Sistercharlie – sold at Arqana in October for just €12,000 but also the winner of the Grade 1 Jenny Wiley Stakes – and My Sister Nat are the first and second foals out of the exciting broodmare Starlet’s Sister, a Galileo sister to Prix Cleopatre winner Leo’s Starlet.

ARK VISION was bred by SF Bloodstock and sold as a yearling by Ballylinch Stud for a scarcely believable 15,000gns, but his dam Black Dahlia – a Listed-placed daughter of Dansili – was sent to France for the Monceaux treatment when she was carrying the Lope De Vega colt on offer in Deauville. “Full credit to the people who raised Dark Vision, he appears to be the best two-year-old in Europe at the moment,” says Bozo. “His yearling half-brother is

very strong and quite stunning. He’s a good size without being overly big. Just very, very impressive.” Looking elsewhere in this year’s yearling consignment from Monceaux to Arqana, one thing springs from the catalogue: the incredibly strong support the farm lent to 2015 champion sprinter Muhaarar in his first year at stud. It offers four by the sire – a filly out of Pacifique and thus a half-sister to the recordbreaking Parabellum (9); a colt out of Grade 1 Beverly D stakes heroine Royal Highness and thus a three-parts brother to dual Group 2 scorer Free Port Lux (23); a colt out of Princess Margaret Stakes winner African Skies making him a half-brother to the smart Calypso Beat (70); and, most notably, a colt out of Listed winner Prudenzia (16). The last-named is particularly significant because Prudenzia, by Dansili out of Monceaux foundation mare Platonic, is something of an Arqana August legend. She has produced four yearlings who have sold for €1m or more at the venue, including this year’s Ribblesdale Stakes winner Magic Wand but excluding Irish Oaks heroine Chicquita, bought for €600,000 before she won the Irish Oaks and was sold to Coolmore at Goffs for an Irish auction record of €6m. Explaining the decision to throw in its lot with Nunnery Stud resident Muhaarar, Bozo says: “I think he’s got potential to become a very interesting stallion. He had such speed, turn of foot and class, and a very attractive physique. I like his breeding too. “I’m very happy with the results. We gave him a good chance and we’ve been rewarded with some outstanding individuals.” Paying tribute to Prudenzia, he adds: “That family is just full of quality, top to bottom. And I don’t think we’ve seen the last of Magic Wand, either. She was better than she showed [when fifth] in the Irish Oaks.” Bozo has also overseen the preparation of one of two first-crop yearlings by US Triple Crown legend American Pharoah in the Arqana catalogue, a filly who is the first foal out of the Grade 3winning Smart Strike mare Marbre Rose (158) bred and offered in partnership with Andreas Putsch of Haras de Saint-Pair. Her international appeal is
arqana
enhanced by the fact Monceaux sold Gidu, a Frankel half-brother to Marbre Rose, for €460,000 to Justin Casse on behalf of American Pharoah’s owner-breeders Zayat Stables at Deauville in 2016. He has run with plenty of credit when fourth in the Grade 2 Hall of Fame Stakes at Saratoga this month and when sixth in the Commonwealth Cup at Royal Ascot in June. “She’s a beautiful filly with a great walk,” says Bozo of the American Pharoah filly. “It’s not surprising as when I saw the sire I noted he too is an amazing walker, and he has that balance that makes you believe he could have been a very successful turf performer. She looks really racy.”
T
HE American Pharoah yearlings sold like hot cakes in Saratoga this month, with ten changing hands for an average of $554,500, but it was Medaglia D’Oro who stole the show, accounting for the sale’s two most expensive lots, a colt and filly who made $1.35m and $1.3m. Naturally, Monceaux also has a yearling to offer at Deauville by Medaglia D’Oro, source of racing matriarchs Rachel Alexandra and Songbird and last year’s Breeders’ Cup Turf winner Talismanic. He is a colt out of dual Grade 3 winner and Grade 1- placed Rusty Slipper (25) offered on behalf of Trinidad and Tobagobased owner-breeder Ralphy Meahjohn and family. “They’re very nice people and they should be very well rewarded for taking the long road from buying an expensive yearling filly, putting her in foal to Medaglia D’Oro and bringing her to France, as the result is an extremely nice colt,” says Bozo. All this is to merely scratch the surface of the Monceaux draft at Deauville this month. Diminishing space allows only honourable mention to the Galileo filly out of Grade 2 winner Naissance Royale (1) and a colt by the champion sire out of Danedream’s Listedplaced half-sister Debutante (106), Siyouni half-brothers to National Defense (79) and Ocovango (102), and progeny of premium sires such as Dark Angel, Frankel and Invincible Spirit. Safe to say the stud will be leading consignor for a seventh consecutive year. Like Ryan Moore and Aidan O’Brien, its domination is set to continue for a long time yet.

16 Anna Sundstrom’s Normandy-based Coulonces Sales has been crossing the Channel bringing drafts to the Goffs UK Premier Yearling Sale only since 2016 but she is responsible for consigning one of the best graduates in the auction’s history. The first trio of yearlings Coulonces offered in Doncaster included none other than Laurens, sold on behalf of breeder Melchior-Francois Mathet to John Dance for £220,000. The daughter of Siyouni has established herself as one of the most popular horses in training after hard-fought, front-running victories in the Fillies’ Mile, Prix Saint-Alary and Prix de Diane. Last year Coulonces brought another four lots to Goffs UK and they included Moravia – another Siyouni filly sold to Gaelic Bloodstock for £80,000 and runner-up in the Group 3 Silver Flash Stakes for Ger Lyons last time out – and Motashakel, a son of Olympic Glory sold to Shadwell for £140,000 and the winner of a Leopardstown maiden for Kevin Prendergast. With that run of form it’s no surprise Sundstrom has expanded her draft for her third selling trip to Doncaster. There are seven from Coulonces Sales in the premier session this year, including a Kodiac filly out of Surrey Storm, a daughter of Montjeu and Listed winner Dont Dili Dali (264), and a Starspangledbanner colt out of a winning half-sister to the classy pair Devonshire and Hurryupharriet (477). Coulonces Sales is also offering two horses at the Silver Sale for the first time – colts by Born To Sea (527) and Sepoy (587). “We feel quite comfortable selling in Britain and Ireland now,” said Sundstrom in an interview with the Racing Post last month. “I know a little bit more about what sort of horse to bring because not every one is going to be a Laurens, we know that. “I’ve been following the Goffs UK Silver Sale and I think it’s a sale that’s kicking off. “Because the main sale has become so expensive, what happens is the people who want to spend 20 to 50 thousand on a horse are being blown out of the water all the time. “But we desperately need this section of the market. Not all horses can cost £200,000.”

Silver graduates: Pleaseletmewin (third right) heads to victory at Newmarket in 2016 and (inset) two-time Group 1 winner Quiet Reflection
The power of the Silver Yearling Sale
Oasis Dream proving the doubters wrong ONE of the most notable stories in the stallion standings this year has been Banstead Manor Stud stalwart Oasis Dream proving breeders and buyers were wrong to abandon him in recent years. The reliable source of Group 1 talent had his fee cut to £30,000 this year from £75,000 as recently as 2016, while his yearling average in Europe has dropped from 281,077gns to 89,605gns in the same period.
Oasis Dream (right) may admittedly have gone a little quiet since his son Muhaarar ruled the sprinting division in 2015, but it was worth keeping the faith as this year he is back doing what he does best: supplying top-class two-yearolds, sprinters and milers and the odd middle-distance star. His representatives of 2018 are headed by Prix Maurice de Gheest heroine Polydream and runaway Duchess of Cambridge Stakes
winner Pretty Pollyanna. There are three lots by Oasis Dream at the Goffs UK Premier Sale, conceived when he stood at that £75,000 fee. They are a colt out of Quiet, a winning close
relation to Twice Over (175), (175) a colt who is out of the stakes-winning Oratorio mare Clenor (392) and a colt who is the first foal out of Interception, who landed the Wokingham Handicap at Royal Ascot and was Listed-placed in sprints (500) (500).
IGNORE the Silver Yearling Sale, which takes place immediately after its Premier counterpart in one session on August 30, at your peril. Pleaseletmewin, a son of Power, was bought there in 2015 for just £36,000 by Alex Elliott and after winning the Horris Hill Stakes was sold for 450,000gns to race in Qatar where he has won some valuable pots. Another rags-toriches story from the Silver Sale was Quiet Reflection, a daughter of Showcasing signed for at £32,000 in 2014 by Howson and Houldsworth Bloodstock on behalf of Powerstown Stud. She was resold for £44,000 before taking the Commonwealth Cup and Haydock Sprint Cup and made 2,100,000gns as a broodmare prospect. Both the winner and runner-up in this year’s Weatherbys Super Sprint, Ginger Nut and Moojim, sold for £23,000 and £30,000 at the 2017 renewal. This year’s auction features 174 yearlings and among the potential highlights are a Cable Bay filly out of a Pivotal half-sister to Sultanina (546), a Clodovil half-brother to Listed winner Verglacial (616) and a Harbour Watch colt out of the classy mare Beldale Memory (625).

Kadiania fifth foal sure to catch plenty of eyes The 13-year-old mare Kadiania, an unraced daughter of Indian Rocket, is emerging as an excellent broodmare. From three runners she has been represented by four-time winner Kadrizzi, Gimcrack Stakes winner and Commonwealth Cup runner-up Sands Of Mali and Flawless Jewel, sold for 95,000gns at the breeze-ups this year and a 16-length winner of a Pontefract novice stakes last month for Richard Fahey after publication of the catalogue. That record dictates Kadiania’s fifth foal, a chestnut colt by Kheleyf, must be of interest when he goes under the hammer as lot 5 at the Goffs UK Premier Sale. The French-bred will be consigned by Longview Stud, who also take to Doncaster eight other lots including a Siyouni filly out of the Listedwinning Bahamian Bounty mare Fig Roll (453) and a Zebedee half-brother to Australian Group 1-placed Swashbuckling (487).
Excellent record: Sands Of Mali (purple cap) and Kadrizzi (inset) have given Kadiania a fine record
Kodiac the go-to sire for two-year-old winners If it’s two-year-old winners you want – and that is what so many visitors to Doncaster do desire – then one of your first ports of call in the catalogue should be the index of sires to find the lot numbers of Kodiac’s offerings. The Tally-Ho Stud stallion
broke the world record for individual juvenile winners from one crop last year – with a quite staggering 61 – and is going great guns in this department again this year. There are no fewer than 28 lots by Kodiac at the Goffs UK
Premier Yearling Sale and many reflect the fact they were bred when the sire’s covering fee rose from €25,000 to €45,000 for 2016. Among the many highlights on paper are a half-brother to Gold Cup hero Trip To Paris (14), a colt out of Fillies’ Mile
runner-up Lady Darshaan (19), a colt out of Listed winner Miss Honorine (93), a half-brother to Group 3-placed Faithful Creek and Tangled (142), a filly out of Listedplaced Wittgenstein (303), a half-brother to Group 3 scorer Age Of Chivalry (337), a filly
out of Grade 3 winner Charlie Em (381) and a daughter of Listed winner Hen Night (488). There is one Kodiac yearling in the Silver Sale – a half-sister to four winners including Listed-placed Moonlit Garden (657).

Brightwalton Stud is back at Doncaster with another yearling out of Listed winner Melbourne Memories, two years after selling her Acclamation yearling colt for £230,000 in the Goffs UK ring. Melbourne Memories has been a remarkable rags-toriches story for agent Matt Coleman and his father. They bred her by sending Three Decades, a winning daughter of Invincible Spirit they bought cheaply, to Sleeping Indian and retained her to race after being bought back as a yearling for £2,200. She went on to win the Bosra
Sham Fillies’ Stakes and finish third in the Fred Darling for the Colemans, and her first foal – that pricey Acclamation colt – was sold into Hong Kong. She has a two-year-old filly by Mukhadram and her yearling filly by Showcasing – whose two-year-olds of 2018 include the stakes winners Advertise and Soldier’s Call – is lot 72 among the Brightwalton draft. There is also a chance at Doncaster to buy a Starspangledbanner half-brother to Melbourne Memories (280) from Tally-Ho Stud.
Smart pedigrees suggest plenty of talent on offer It is traditionally all about body type rather than black type when it comes to how lots are selected for the Goffs UK Premier Yearling Sale, but that doesn’t mean there aren’t some flashy distaff pedigrees between the catalogue covers. Take, for example, Croom House Stud’s Harbour Watch colt (47); he is a half-brother to dual Group 2-winning two-year-old and popular young sire Mehmas. Or The Castlebridge Consignment’s colt by Holy Roman Emperor – sire of this year’s Classic winners Romanised and Well Timed – out of Yorkshire Oaks heroine Quiff (176). Then there is Hollyhill Stud’s
Excelebration colt out of Tattersalls Gold Cup winner and champion Rebelline (185), who has already produced stakes winners I’m Yours and Recharge. And how about the Jamie Railton-consigned Garswood colt (190) who is a three-parts brother to dual Group 3 winner Regal Realm and the recipient of a significant recent update? Regal Realm’s son Regal Reality earned his first black type by easily winning the Thoroughbred Stakes at Glorious Goodwood this month. If the above mentioned lots have an ounce of their close relatives’ ability, they should be very good indeed.

QUEST FOR THE How Rebel Racing is going from strength to strength after buying Royal Ascot winner Rajasinghe at Doncaster in 2016
Mark Scully speaks to Richard Spencer about Rebel Racing’s winning formula for buying yearlings
W
HEN telling the story of Rebel Racing, it is impossible to overlook the significance of the sales in Doncaster. Cockney Rebel, the dual
Guineas hero of 2007 who ignited the passion of owner Phil Cunningham, was sourced from the St Leger sale of 2005, with Bobby O’Ryan going to 30,000gns to secure him from the Trickledown Stud draft. Fast-forward 13 years and Rebel Racing, the operation that brings together Cunningham’s racing interests, continues to enjoy significant success with horses sourced from Doncaster and, as far as the methodology goes, little has changed. “We’re lucky that Bobby O’Ryan goes around and looks at everything for us,” explains Richard Spencer, now in his second full season as Rebel Racing’s trainer.
“Everyone knows what we’re striving for and the formula has been working well, so hopefully it can continue.” Working well it certainly has been. In his first season, Spencer and the team toasted big-race success on arguably the world’s biggest stage as Rajasinghe caused something of an upset to land the Coventry Stakes at Royal Ascot. That colt was an £85,000 Goffs UK Premier buy in 2016 by O’Ryan and Rebel Racing, once again from Trickledown. The Group-race glory has continued into 2018, with the thoroughly likeable and no less talented Rumble Inthejungle Continues page 22

Rajasinghe (fifth left) heads to victory in the 2017 Coventry Stakes at Royal Ascot to give Rebel Racing and trainer Richard Spencer their first big win vvFrom page 20 running away with the Molecomb Stakes at Glorious Goodwood this month. He was a graduate of the same sale 12 months ago, the team going to £70,000 to bring him home. Recalling Rajasinghe, Spencer says: “He had the combination of a good page before we even clapped eyes on him and then as soon as we saw him, we liked him as a specimen. “From day one he looked a proper horse, with a good shoulder, a good backend and a great attitude – everything you would want, and it’s not often you can go to the sale and find that.” A year later, Cunningham famously reserved the name Rumble Inthejungle, so determined was he to take home the son of first-season sire and now fellow Molecomb scorer Bungle Inthejungle. Spencer says: “Rumble Inthejungle was very good looking and had a nice page to back that up – he was a standout for us. “We looked at him the day before he went through the ring and Phil had reserved the name for him the evening
before we tried to buy him, so it was one of those things where I knew somebody was going to have to have a big cheque book to buy him because Phil was adamant he was bringing him home.”
T
he success extends beyond those two runners, with the likes of two-yearolds You Never Can Tell and Louis Treize, bought last year for £30,000 and £120,000 respectively, getting their heads in front in recent weeks with the promise of better to come. “You Never Can Tell looked a yearling who could make a two-year-old,” says Spencer. “A lot of Elzaams aren’t great walkers but it’s not a walking race and he can gallop. He could be one to look out for at the backend of the season. “We all liked Louis Treize when we saw him last year and he’s done well for us so far. He was a popular horse on the day, with a few people in for him but luckily we got him.” What then is the formula applied by the Rebel Racing and O’Ryan team, who will descend on Doncaster again
this month determined to ensure there are more big days in 2019 and beyond? All three men – O’Ryan, Spencer and Cunningham – compile their own lists, which focuses attention on horses the trio are drawn towards, but the process ultimately does not exclude any horse from the catalogue without careful consideration, so determined is the team not to allow a good opportunity to pass them by. Every horse, therefore, needs to be seen, not merely discounted due to whatever could be on its page in the catalogue. “As my old boss Barry Hills used to say me, ‘you can’t train a piece of paper’,” says Spencer. “So if a nice horse is put in front of us without much of a page, we’re not scared to go and buy it. We’ve got a certain type of horse we like and I think it works well.” That mantra also applies to the first-season sires and, while Spencer acknowledges he has a view about the potential merits or otherwise of this year’s crop, he is in no mood to discount anything at this early stage. “I wouldn’t see any firstseason sire’s stock properly
until we go to the sales, so you can only really find out your opinions on them all when you start seeing them,” he says. “I’d rather look at everything at the sales so we don’t miss one just because the page looked horrendous. “There’s no point buying something at the sales that you have to look at for the next two years and don’t like. “Each individual trainer will have different types they like, so it’s all about buying something you can work with seven days a week, 365 days a year. “Everyone knows what we’re striving for and the formula has been working well, so hopefully it can continue.”
U
nsurprisingly given Rumble Inthejungle’s success, the Rebel Racing team will head to Yorkshire with a spring in their collective step and it would be no surprise to see them spend a healthy sum once again. In 2016, O’Ryan/Rebel Racing parted with £296,000 to get their hands on six yearlings, including Rajasinghe, for an average just
north of £49,000. That increased last year, with eight yearlings bought for a combined £545,000, the average nudging £70,000. Spencer hopes to be hitting all of the summer sales with even more orders to fill in 2018 and so it would be no surprise to see those figures jump again. The trainer says: “By the sounds of it this sale is even more popular than ever this year, with a lot more horses they had to whittle down to the final catalogue, so I’d like to think the quality will probably be up from last year and previous years. “They always look after us well and, with the likes of Harry Angel and Laurens, the results speak for themselves – the list is endless. “Whether it’s the Premier Sale or the Silver Sale, they put forward a good quality type of horse and so we’ll be heading there again with an open mind hoping to buy a few. “We’re still in the early stages of Rebel Racing as a business [established in 2014], and it’s my second full season training. “We’re setting the bar quite high, so we’ve got to keep the ball rolling.”

What chances of lightning striking again with another Derby winner? Martin Stevens talks to Gestut Rottgen manager Frank Dorff about their leading broodmare
W
ITH tens of thousands of foals born across Europe each year, the chances of breeding or buying a Derby winner are slim indeed. And yet the catalogue for this year’s BBAG Yearling Sale in Baden-Baden includes a colt who on paper at least looks more likely than most to win a Classic. That is because lot 202, already named Worrick, is the fourth foal out of a mare whose first two offspring have both won the German Derby. Windstoss, a son of Shirocco who is the debut foal out of Wellenspiel, won the Hamburg feature for trainer Markus Klug and owner-breeder Gestut Rottgen in 2017. Twelve months later his half-brother Weltstar, by Soldier Hollow, also landed the race for the same connections. What makes the achievement all the more remarkable is that Wellenspiel retired to Rottgen with no great expectations for her broodmare career, as she had a good pedigree but failed to gain black type in her racing career. That fact is perhaps reflected in the prices achieved by Windstoss and Weltstar when
they went through the ring as yearlings at BBAG – €16,000 and €40,000 respectively, returning to their vendors each time. “Of course not,” Gestut Rottgen manager Frank Dorff laughs when asked whether he could have ever guessed Wellenspiel would become the best broodmare in Germany. “That’s the thing – I hoped she’d produce nice stock, because her dam is my favourite horse – Well Known, who was a champion at two and second in the Preis der Diana at three. “But she was only an average performer herself, nothing special. She is, however, very compact, very correct – which runs in the family – and has noticeably short cannonbones, perfect in a broodmare. “You might fail her because she is quite small and she produces them quite small. But small or not: her foals are extremely good horses.” Looking back on the market indifference towards the two future Derby winners, Dorff reasons: “Windstoss is by Shirocco, who had moved to become a jumps stallion before he was offered at BBAG, so the sire had gone out of fashion. “Also, Windstoss is quite small and backward, so he was taken to the autumn sale, where later developing horses and those who are not so valuable are usually presented.” As for Weltstar, Dorff adds: “He’s by Soldier Hollow, who is Germany’s champion sire and is certainly more in fashion, but he was not the biggest either and did not appear to be in favour, so we decided to keep him.” Wellenspiel’s third foal, a colt by Reliable Man, was also
bought back in Baden-Baden last year. He reached a better price – €110,000 – as he should have, Windstoss having won the German Derby in the preceding month. But Rottgen still decided to keep hold of the lot, now a two-year-old named Walerian. “He’s much bigger with more bone and I like him very much, so we decided to put a higer reserve on him – especially after Windstoss had won the German Derby, and with the Reliable Man yearlings generally selling well,” says Dorff. “So I don’t know why people didn’t want to buy him. No idea. He’s in training with Klug. At the moment he is perhaps a little lazy but I’m confident he will turn into a good horse, even if it is asking a bit much to expect another Derby winner.
Remarkable feat: Wellenspiel (above) has produced two winners of the German Derby for Gestut Rottgen and manager Frank Dorff (right)
He might be able to make a start this year at two, maybe from October, but he won’t show his best until three.” As for Worrick, the Kamsin yearling selling at BadenBaden this month, Dorff is not getting carried away with thoughts of prices resembling telephone numbers, due in part because the circumstances behind Windstoss and his sire Shirocco have repeated themselves.
K
AMSIN, a German Derby winner by another German Derby winner in Samum, formerly stood at Rottgen but now stands under the National Hunt banner in France and is in strong demand in that department as he is responsible for this year’s Grand Steeple-Chase de Paris winner On The Go. Neverthless, surely few other colts have been as precision-engineered to strike in the German Derby and Dorff says: “Like Windstoss, he’s a little small and backward, the
type of horse I’d normally choose to sell in October. But as a brother to two Derby winners he has to be in the main sale. We were even thinking about having him in Book 1 at Tattersalls but people there would be thinking, who on earth is Kamsin? “He’s a very nice yearling and hopefully buyers will respect the pedigree. But even if they don’t, we’ll be happy to keep him.” Wellenspiel has a “very nice, beautiful filly foal” by Protectionist – “I really like her,” says Dorff – and she’s in foal to a sire with rather more worldwide appeal than the likes of Shirocco and Kamsin: Darley flagbearer Dubawi. The Kamsin colt out of Wellenspiel is one of 11 yearlings Rottgen is consigning to BBAG this year. Other standouts are perhaps the Siyouni colt out of the Listedwinning Sternkonig mare Alaskakonigin (206); a Lope De Vega colt out of the Listed-placed Desert Prince mare Elora Princess (60); and a Pivotal half-brother to three stakes performers, one of them Group 1-placed Kassiano (66). “The Pivotal is wonderful; well balanced, a good mover, very correct and most importantly very sound in his mind,” says Dorff. “The Lope De Vega is also one I like a lot.” Debating how trade will fare at Baden-Baden, he acknowledges the age-old problem with the domestic German market – most players being owner-breeders, with few in the country wanting to buy yearlings – and is hoping for strong overseas participation. “I hope that foreign buyers will come over, because there is excellent value for money for horses in Germany and it is an excellent catalogue,” he says. Surely any agent and trainer serious about buying potentially high-class horses would not be doing their due diligence if they ignored the only sale in Europe to be offering a yearling out of a mare whose first two foals were Derby winners.
