SUMMER YEARLINGS FIRST-SEASON SIRES

Welcome to the essential sales digest

C

AN it really be the yearling sales season already? It seems like only last week that the breeze-ups and jumps festivals were in full swing. Life seems to fly by in the bloodstock industry due to all those regularly recurring milestones, so thank heaven that although the sales format remains more or less the same each year, there is always something new to spice things up and keep us sane. Most obviously, there are the first yearling crops of a wide range of sires to scrutinise. As discussed on these pages, individuals by the commercial big-hitter Shalaa and Classic winners Awtaad, Harzand, New Bay and The Gurkha will be among the most keenly anticipated. Then there is the new wave of consignors to look forward to, and this summer Taylor Made Sales sends its first draft to Arqana in association with Haras de Gouffern (pages 8-9) and respected yearling manager Gerry Meehan presents the first draft of his own at Doncaster (pages 16-17). In a world full of uncertainty, the yearling sales also bring some comforting constants. Germany’s leading breeder Gestüt Brümmerhof, established 30 years ago, has enjoyed a fine year on the track and will be at BBAG to give buyers the chance to get into their flourishing families (page 22) and there is, as ever, the guarantee that there are top-class horses waiting to be unearthed at Deauville, Doncaster and Baden-Baden. Some of the most attractive lots, on paper at least, are pinpointed throughout this supplement. Another reassuring regular feature of the yearling sales season will be the Racing Post’s coverage of the action, with the latest news, results and analysis in the newspaper and on the website. N AN unusual twist, the most expensively priced stallion who retired to stud in Europe in 2017 did so in France. That was because Shalaa, a brilliant two-year-old sprinter equipped with a commercial pedigree, was sent to his owner Al Shaqab Racing’s Haras de Bouquetot in Normandy. There are 30 debut yearlings by the son of Invincible Spirit who won the July Stakes, Richmond Stakes, Prix Morny and Middle Park Stakes in that glittering juvenile season, available at the early sales covered in this supplement. Naturally, as they were conceived in France – at a fee of €27,500 – there are plenty on offer at the Arqana August Yearling Sale; 17 to be precise, with three more to come at the V2. The ever astute Ecurie des Monceaux lent the stallion strong support in his first year and consequently have a three-parts sister to Prix Jean-Luc Lagardère hero National Defense (lot 48), a filly out of multiple Grade 2

Shalaa in his paddock at Haras de Bouquetot in Normandy and (below) Irish Classic winner Awtaad

winner Naissance Royale (134) and a half-brother to Listed scorer Calypso Beat out of Princess Margaret Stakes winner African Skies (215) among its draft. Other Shalaa yearlings to look out for in Deauville include the half-brother to classy Penglai Pavilion out of Prix de Sandringham winner Maiden Tower (122) from the Fairway Consignment, and the colt who is the first foal out of the Listed-winning Lope De Vega mare Mojo Risin from Haras de Montaigu (130).

There is no shortage of Shalaa yearlings at Doncaster either. The standouts on paper include Trickledown Stud’s colt out of a winning Acclamation sister to Prix Morny third Parliament Square (185), Coulonces Sales’ filly out of a placed half-sister to Grade 1-placed Onthemoonagain (213), and Tally-Ho Stud’s

filly out of I’m So Glad, a Listed-placed half-sister to Group 3 scorer Souvenir ( Delondres (370). Buyers’ confidence in Shalaa will presumably only have been enhanced by the bright start made by another son of Invincible Spirit in Kingman. Other stallion sons of the Irish National Stud stalwart with their first yearlings on the ground are

the subfertile Ajaya, who is set to be represented by three offerings at Doncaster, and Territories, who will have offspring consigned to Deauville, Doncaster and Baden-Baden this summer. The pick of the Territories tribe could be Jedburgh Stud’s half-brother to stakes winners Pearl Flute and Secret Pursuit at Arqana August (171) and Limestone Stud’s colt out of the Listed-winning Medicean mare Virginia Hall, making him a half-brother to Listed-placed Marie Of Lyon, at Goffs UK Premier (179). Grove Stud’s Goffs UK Premier-bound Territories colt out of Gone Sailing (354), meanwhile, comes with an appealing update as his half-brother Major Jumbo secured a stakes success at Chester this month. Classic winners among the stallion intake of 2017 with lots in the summer yearling sales include Awtaad, Harzand, New Bay and The Gurkha. Irish 2,000 Guineas victor Awtaad’s octet at Goffs UK Premier include two with direct relations who are Group 1 winners – Croom House Stud’s colt out of Premio Lydia Tesio heroine Aoife Alainn (223) and Tally-Ho Stud’s half-brother to EP Taylor Stakes scorer Blond Me (364).

Racing Post Thursday, August 15, 2019

Dual Derby winner Harzand has only two on offer at each of Deauville and Baden-Baden, with Gestüt Etzean presenting its colt by the sire out of German champion two-year-old and Preis der Diana runner-up Djumama (59) at BBAG. Gestüt Ammerland is due to consign two of the best-bred lots by Dubawi’s son New Bay out of the six by the Prix du Jockey Club winner at Arqana August – a colt out of Prix de Royaumont scorer Savanne (2) and a half-brother to Listed winner Bay Of Poets (64). Of the three at Doncaster, Powerstown Stud’s colt from the high-achieving Johnson-Houghton family of Accidental Agent and Mohaather (120) catches the eye. The Gurkha, by the great Galileo, scored Group 1 successes in France and Britain and so it is no surprise he has strong drafts at sales on both sides of the English Channel this summer. Among those in Deauville are a half-brother to Lancashire Oaks winner The Black Princess from Haras de la Louvière (112) and a filly out of Listed scorer Pearl Grey from Camas Park and Glenvale Studs (143), while available in Doncaster are a half-sister to stakes-placed Silver Meadow and Toofi from Coulonces Sales (109) and a half-brother to Listed winner Restorer from Oaks Farm Stables (446). Belardo, by the in-form Lope De Vega, was below his best in the spring of his Classic year but was a champion two-year-old and redeemed his reputation with victory in the Lockinge Stakes at four. He has a smattering of debut yearlings across Europe but the one with the most interesting pedigree might just be at BBAG – Gestüt Fährhof’s filly out of Win For Life (176), a winning daughter of Dubawi and German St Leger scorer Win For Us whose two-year-old half-brother Will To Win lived up to his name with an impressive score on his second start for Simon Crisford. The largest yearling delegation among the debutant sires this summer belongs to Mehmas, which is hardly surprising considering he was the busiest new recruit in

The Gurkha, Coolmore’s son of their great sire Galileo, has strong drafts on both sides of the English Channel; Belardo (top right) and Twilight Son in racecourse action

Europe in 2017 with 187 mares covered; breeders no doubt enticed by his race record – wins in the July and Richmond Stakes and placed efforts in the Coventry, National and Middle Park Stakes – and pedigree, as a well-bred son of Acclamation. Thirty-two of the 39 chances to buy a Mehmas yearlings between now and the end of August come at Goffs UK Premier, and they include some choicely bred lots. They are headed by the half-brother to this month’s Richmond Stakes winner Golden Horde from Highclere Stud (319) but not forgetting half-brothers to Clem Fandango (33; from Tally-Ho Stud), Shamwari Lodge (50; from Pier House Stud), Big Time Baby (62; from Tally-Ho), Star Alexander (167;; from Owenstown Stud) and Terror (241; from Tally-Ho), and half-sisters to Melbourne Memories (162; from Tally-Ho) and Mac Love (455;; from Lynn Lodge Stud). Visitors to Doncaster will also be spoilt for choice of lots by fellow first-crop sires Adaay, Estidhkaar, Kodi Bear, Markaz,

Pride Of Dubai, The Last Lion and Twilight Son, all pacey and/or precocious performers who should get the sort of stock the sale is famous for producing. Whitsbury Manor Stud – which stands Adaay, a Hungerford Stakes winner by Kodiac – showcases the sire at Goffs UK Premier with half-sisters to this season’s classy juvenile fillies Good Vibes (74) and Avengers Queen (103) among others. Also of strong interest on pedigree are the Jamie Railton-consigned half-brother to dual Group 2 winner and 1,300,000gns breeding prospect buy Heartache (15) and Bearstone Stud’s half-brother to Listed-placed Daphinia (11). Tara Stud, home of Estidhkaar, Estidhkaar a dual Group 2-winning Dark Angel

half-brother to champion Toormore, is set to sell two by the sire with attractive pages at Doncaster – a half-brother to ill-fated Listed-placed two-year-old It Don’t Come Easy (315) and a filly out of a winning Muhtathir sister to the smart Lone Ranger (391). Rathbarry Stud, custodians of Kodi Bear, another son of Kodiac who won the Celebration Mile and finished second in the Dewhurst, consigns to the sale the sire’s filly out of the Listed-placed Acclamation mare Shirley Blake (100) and colt out of Notte Illuminata, a winning Acclamation sister to Lilbourne Lad (469). Look out also for John Troy’s half-brother to Group 3 scorer Zihba (327) and Aughamore Stud’s filly out of Firth of Clyde Stakes runner-up Midnight ( Martini (431). The Goffs UK draft by Markaz, the dual Group 3-winning Dark Angel brother to Mecca’s Angel, includes a New Bay (pink cap) and Mehmas in their racing pomp

three-parts brother to seven-time winner Born To Finish from Trickledown Stud (453) and a half-brother to fair sprinter Ascot Day consigned by Harry Dutfield (456). Pride Of Dubai, a dual Australian Group 1 winner at two by Street Cry and from the family of Invincible Spirit and Kodiac, has two in the Premier catalogue consigned by Castlebridge and with further strong southern hemisphere connections on the bottom half of their pedigree – a colt out of a winning half-sister to South African Group 1 heroine Amanee who claims Miesque as his third dam (173) and a colt out of a winning half-sister to South African champion Mahbooba, dam of Group 3 scorer Mootasadir (451). The Last Lion, a son of Choisir, was the most admirable two-year-old of 2016, placing on all ten starts from winning the Brocklesby Stakes on debut to landing the Middle Park Stakes on his swansong. The pick of the pack at Doncaster could be the Oakshott Bloodstock-consigned filly out of Cracksman’s half-sister Saxon Princess (76) and Rossenarra Stud’s colt out of Albany Stakes fourth She’s A Character (96). Among those at the sale by Twilight Son, the Kyllachy

half-brother to stakes winners Music Master and Spring Fling who landed the Haydock Sprint Cup and Golden Jubilee Stakes, are a half-brother to Molecomb Stakes winner and Middle Park Stakes third Rumble Inthejungle from Acorn Stud (356) and a colt out of the Group 3-placed Invincible Spirit mare Hasty from Oaks Farm Stables (359). Other produce of first-crop yearlings to note at Deauville include Dariyan half-brothers to Group winners Anodor (79) and Souvenir Delondres (248) from Haras du Quesnay and Hubert Honoré respectively. Back at Doncaster, a few more worth marking on your card are Norris Bloodstock’s Bobby’s Kitten colt out of Listed winner Mullein, thus a half-brother to smart pair Carry On Deryck and Tarboosh (450); the Rosyground Stud-consigned Charming Thought half-sister to the dam of Kachy from the family of Beat The Bank (419); and Rathasker Stud’s Coulsty half-sister to this year’s Norfolk Stakes fifth Emten (410). Melbourne Cup victor Protectionist is the big story among the new sires in Baden-Baden, with his draft replete with progeny of or siblings to stakes winners.

Follow our lead – six of the best recent Arqana graduates Watch Me

3-year-old bay filly by Olympic Glory out of Watchful, by Galileo Francis Graffard’s filly took the scalp of dual 1,000 Guineas heroine Hermosa and Frankel’s close relation Jubiloso with a surprise victory in the Coronation Stakes at Royal Ascot, having won the Prix Imprudence and finished an unlucky-in-running sixth in the Poule d’Essai des Pouliches. The first-crop daughter of Olympic Glory was bred by Antoinette Tamagni and carries the colours of son Alexander after she wasn’t sold at €30,000 – scarcely believable considering her value must now run into seven figures – at the Arqana August Yearling Sale in 2017. There are nine youngsters from the third crop of Olympic Glory catalogued for this year’s auction, including another from Watch Me’s vendor Haras du Petit Tellier who is out of the filly’s broodmare sire Galileo – a colt out of Libbard, a descendant of Irish St Leger winner Eurobird (lot 292).

Sottsass

3yo ch c Siyouni-Starlet’s Sister (Galileo) The impressive two-length winner of this season’s Prix du Jockey Club from the highly

Sales alumni: Group 1 winners Watch Me and (right) Sottsass

regarded Classic hero Persian King is the latest in a long line of top-class horses sold in Deauville by perennial leading vendor Ecurie des Monceaux. The son of Siyouni – out of Monceaux’s brilliant young broodmare Starlet’s Sister, whose two other runners are US turf champion Sistercharlie and Group 3 scorer My Sister Nat – fetched €340,000 from Oceanic Bloodstock and now carries the colours of Peter Brant’s White Birch Farm. Monceaux has a star-studded draft of 34 yearlings at the latest edition of Arqana August, including progeny of Galileo, Dubawi and Frankel, as well as another five by Siyouni. The

operation will also present a Fastnet Rock half-brother to Sottsass and Sistercharlie who is sure to be popular (lot 21).

Fleeting

3yo b f Zoffany-Azafata (Motivator) Fleeting, a Group 2 winner at two and placed in two Classics and at Royal Ascot at three, has rewarded connections at each step of her career. Breeder Fernando Bermudez produced her by sending his champion Spanish mare Azafata to Zoffany when the sire stood at €12,500 and he sold the filly, through Haras d’Ombreville, to HSV Agency as a foal in Deauville for €50,000.

The G1 juvenile and G1 miler by the sire of Kingman and the best horse in his family since Shamardal and Street Cry.

HSV Agency doubled its investment when selling Fleeting to Horse France at the Arqana August Yearling Sale and for her eventual owners, Coolmore, she has earned around £250,000 thanks to that victory in the May Hill Stakes and placed efforts in the Oaks, Ribblesdale Stakes and Irish Oaks. Her value to the operation as a broodmare is, of course, far higher. Fleeting’s half-sister by Watch Me’s sire Olympic Glory (lot 54) forms part of the consignment from Haras d’Ombreville at this year’s Arqana August Yearling Sale.

Arizona

2yo b c No Nay Never-Lady Ederle (English Channel) Arizona showcases the talents of one of the bright young things of the French sales scene – Charles Brière, who operates under the Fairway Consignment banner. He unearthed this season’s Coventry Stakes winner in the Houghton Bloodstock draft at the Tattersalls December Foal Sale for 65,000gns and resold the colt to Coolmore at the Arqana August Yearling Sale for €260,000. There are a baker’s

dozen of Fairway Consignment offerings at Arqana August this year including another No Nay Never colt – this one out of Je T’Adore, a Montjeu mare from the family of Group/Grade 1 winners Crystal Ocean, Rose Gypsy, Sasuru and Tuscan Evening (lot 102). That colt is among five lots by the young son of Scat Daddy who has been in red-hot form of late, also supplying the likes of Mystery Power, Servalan, Shadn and Ten Sovereigns.

Enbihaar

4yo b f Redoute’s ChoiceChanterelle (Trempolino) The Arqana August Yearling Sale offers buyers the best of French breeding and Enbihaar – a daughter of champion Australian sire Redoute’s Choice, a former shuttler to Normandy, out of a daughter of Trempolino and Prix Maurice de Gheest heroine Spectacular Joke – certainly lived up to that billing. It should be no surprise, then, that Shadwell had to go all the way to €500,000

to secure the good-looking bay filly from breeder Haras du Mezeray. She has rewarded her new owners’ faith by taking the Lancashire Oaks and Lillie Langtry Stakes this season, and is an invaluable breeding prospect. There are no more French-conceived Redoute’s Choice yearlings to buy, but there are three lots from the first crop of the sire’s high-class son Scissor Kick, a shuttler to Haras d’Etreham, at Arqana August, and four more at V2.

Duke Of Hazzard

3yo b c Lope De Vega-With Your Spirit (Invincible Spirit) A €130,000 purchase by Paul Cole from the Haras d’Etreham draft in 2017, Duke Of Hazzard has become a grand servant for the trainer. The son of Lope De Vega has won four of his 14 starts and finished placed in another five, and was most convincing when striking in the Group 3 Thoroughbred Stakes at Glorious Goodwood this month. Duke Of Hazzard’s yearling half-sister by Teofilo, also bred by Runnymede Farm out of an Invincible Spirit half-sister to Racing Post Trophy winner Palace Episode, is set to go through the ring at Arqana August (lot 35). SUMMER YEARLINGS DEAUVILLE Martin Stevens with his pick of the catalogue – 12 lots who could make their mark at Arqana Lot 18

bay colt by Frankel out of Souvenir Delondres, by Siyouni Consigned by Hubert Honoré The unbeaten dual world champion is represented by six lots in the Arqana August Yearling Sale catalogue and this colt looks one of the standouts, on paper at least. He is the second foal out of Souvenir Delondres, a daughter of Siyouni who won the Group 3 Prix Eclipse at two. Siyouni is by Cheveley Park Stud stalwart Pivotal, and the cross of Frankel over Pivotal has come up trumps with Group 1 winners Cracksman and Veracious.

Lot 19

b c Kingman-Spin (Galileo) La Motteraye Consignment Kingman’s third-crop yearlings are likely to be gold dust during the forthcoming sales season after his first two crops have yielded 12 individual stakes winners headed by Poule d’Essai des Poulains hero Persian King, Group 2 scorers Calyx and Headman and St James’s Palace Stakes runner-up King Of Comedy. There is no shortage of them at Deauville this month, mind you, with 14 on offer. This colt from La Motteraye stands out as a brother to Bowled Over, unbeaten in two starts at three this year for Francis Graffard, out of Spin, a Group 3-placed sister or half-sister to stakes winners Dirgam, Fermion, Hearthstead Maison, Rave Reviews, Sail and 1,000 Guineas third Moth.

Lot 21

b c Fastnet Rock-Starlet’s Sister (Galileo) Ecurie des Monceaux Starlet’s Sister has emerged as one of the most exciting young broodmares in France, if not Europe, after her first foals have turned out to be Prix de Diane runner-up and subsequent US turf champion Sistercharlie, Group 3 scorer My Sister Nat, and this season’s exciting Prix du Jockey Club winner Sottsass. The fact that Sistercharlie was by the inexpensive stallion Myboycharlie only serves to magnify her achievement. The latest off the production line is a colt by crack Australian shuttle sire Fastnet Rock. With Sistercharlie being by Galileo, that means he is bred on the same cross as Group/Grade 1 winners Age Of Fire, Intricately, Magicool, Qualify, Rivet, Unforgotten and Zhukova.

Lot 23

b c Galileo-Steip Amach (Vocalised) Haras d’Etreham There are seven yearlings by Coolmore phenomenon

Sistercharlie (above left, and clockwise from top right), Roman Turbo, Visinari and Antonia De Vega: close relations will be on offer to these standout performers

Kingman’s third-crop yearlings are likely to be gold dust during the forthcoming sales season Galileo for those with pockets deep enough to pick from at Deauville this August. Naturally all have persuasive pedigree claims, so elevating one or two above the others is an invidious task – but this colt from Haras d’Etreham is of particular interest. He is the first foal out of Jim Bolger’s dual Group 3 winner and twice Group 1-placed performer Steip Amach, a daughter of his own sire Vocalised. Steip Amach is in turn a half-sister to US Grade 3 winner Ceisteach and further back it is the top Aga Khan Studs family of Shergar, Shalanaya and Shamdinan.

Lot 26

b f Holy Roman EmperorSwish (Monsun) Normandie Breeding There will surely be few more significant catalogue updates than that belonging to this daughter of Holy Roman Emperor. Her two-year-old brother Roman Turbo, described merely as ‘in training in Ireland’ in the hard-copy catalogue, is now a dual winner for Michael Halford, including in the Group 3 Anglesey Stakes. That is not the filly’s only claim to fame though. She is also a half-sister to multiple Listed winner Swacadelic out of Swish, an unraced Monsun sister to champion Shirocco.

Lot 34

b f Lope De VegaWitches Brew (Duke Of Marmalade) Ballylinch Stud Lope De Vega is enjoying a banner year, not least with Irish 2,000 Guineas hero Phoenix Of Spain and Prix d’Ispahan winner Zabeel Prince, and his custodians Ballylinch Stud will present a pair of well-related fillies at Deauville including this sister to Antonia De Vega, who has won three of her four starts including the Listed Abingdon Stakes by four lengths last time out. Antonia De Vega and her sister are out of Witches Brew, a Listed-placed half-sister to Prix Jacques le Marois winner Al Wukair. Witches Brew is a granddaughter of Prix de Diane victress Caerlina, so this is a family with plenty of cross-Channel appeal.

Lot 62

b c Sea The Stars-Bourree (Siyouni) Haras d’Ombreville Sea The Stars seems to just have a knack for siring widely admired racecourse favourites such as Crystal Ocean, Stradivarius and the late, lamented Sea Of Class. Perhaps the next superstars by the sire are contained within his nine-strong draft at the Arqana August Yearling Sale. One likely candidate is

Haras d’Ombreville’s colt who is the first foal out of Bourree, a daughter of Siyouni who was Germany’s champion two-year-old and scored in the Group 3 Prix de Psyché at three.

Lot 88

b c Dubawi-Giofra (Dansili) Haras de Perelle What do the likes of Benbatl, Frontiersman, Ghaiyyath, Journey, Quorto, Too Darn Hot and Zarak have in common, apart from being high-class runners? They are all by Dubawi out of celebrity racemares in Nahrain, Ouija Board, Nightime, Montare, Volume, Dar Re Mi and Zarkava. This colt from Haras de Perelle fits the same profile, as a son of Darley’s flagship sire out of Falmouth Stakes heroine Giofra. His brother Al Battar topped the Arqana August Yearling Sale two years ago when sold to Phoenix Thoroughbreds for €1.55 million, and he has been placed once in two starts.

Lot 98

b f Kingman-Hit The Sky (Cozzene) La Motteraye Consignment La Motteraye is fortunate enough to be offering four yearlings by sire-of-the-moment Kingman at Deauville; alongside the colt out of Spin, another whose claims leap off

their catalogue page is this half-sister to stakes winners Mayhem, Memphis Tennessee and Royal Bench from an outstanding old Kilfrush Stud clan that counts Cerulean Sky, Moonstone and US Army Ranger among its members. The family has proven commercial appeal in Deauville, as the dam Hit The Sky’s filly by Dubawi topped the Arqana August Yearling Sale at €1.5 million in 2013.

Lot 99

b f Galileo-Hoh My Darling (Dansili) Haras des Capucines As previously mentioned, all seven of the Galileo yearlings on offer at Deauville are worthy of mention merely by dint of the identity of their sire. One other who particularly merits attention, though, is this filly from Haras des Capucines. What makes her so intriguing is that her dam, the winning Dansili mare Hoh My Darling, has produced Our Last Summer, a Scandinavian champion, and Peace Envoy, a winner of the Anglesey Stakes who also finished third in the Prix Morny, to less star-studded stallions in Zamindar and Power. If she could get high-class runners by those, what might she achieve when paired with the perennial British and Irish champion sire?

Lot 148

b f Dubawi-Prudenzia (Dansili) Ecurie des Monceaux Here is the latest yearling out of Ecurie des Monceaux’s remarkable cash machine of a mare, Prudenzia, whose offspring to have sold in Deauville – including Irish Oaks heroine Chicquita and Ribblesdale Stakes victress Magic Wand – have generated €6,570,000 in receipts. Chicquita, of course, went on to break the Irish auction record for a thoroughbred after her Classic exploits when sold to Coolmore for €6 million at Goffs. This is the first time Prudenzia has had a produce of Dubawi come on to the market; that will surely arouse the interests of the Maktoum family. Being a filly with immense residual value should also encourage people to keep bidding.

Lot 205

b c Siyouni-Visinada (Sinndar) Haras de Beauvoir As more and more high-class runners by Siyouni have appeared on the track, so his fee has risen and risen; to the point that he became the highest-priced stallion ever to stand in France at €100,000 this season. His crops should thus be improving year on year, and the bumper draft of 29 available at Arqana August were bred off a fee of €45,000. Each of the 29 will have their individual attractions on pedigree and physique, but Haras de Beauvoir’s colt comes with an eyecatching pedigree update as his two-year-old half-brother Visinari has won a Newmarket novice stakes in impressive fashion and then finished third in the July Stakes and fourth in the Vintage Stakes in his three starts.

SUMMER YEARLINGS DEAUVILLE

Michele MacDonald talks to Duncan Taylor about Taylor Made Sales Agency’s first yearling draft at the Arqana August Sale

W

ORKING with French partner Haras de Gouffern & de la Genevraye, top American consignor Taylor Made Sales Agency will present a first draft of yearlings at the Arqana August Sale in Deauville with plans to develop bigger consignments for this venue in the future. Duncan Taylor, president and founder of Taylor Made, plans to be on hand in Deauville to watch his ambitious vision of how to make the most of the global bloodstock market spring to life. Although this year’s consignment is a relatively compact group of five yearlings, with three of those pinhooks acquired in Europe by Gouffern’s affiliate, International Thoroughbred Consultants (ITC), Taylor said he is going to work doubly hard in the future to send more yearlings to Deauville from America. “I say we’ve got to think differently. You can’t always do the exact same thing,” Taylor says. Taylor Made tried in November to find some American-bred weanlings to pinhook at Deauville but found the prices in Kentucky too stiff for individuals who would have worked for European buyers, he explains. Additionally, the Taylor Made team discovered it was more difficult than initially imagined to convince American breeders and sellers to incur the expense and risk of sending yearlings to be sold in France. Yet the concept remains one that has strong and intriguing potential. “For customers who have the

‘Deauville is fun – great food, the weather is great and there’s great racing – it’s just a good place to be’ right horses, it would be great – like a Kitten’s Joy yearling would have been a slam dunk,” Taylor says, noting that the well-established international sire’s progeny includes 2018 Cartier European Horse of the Year Roaring Lion. “But I couldn’t get anybody to do it. I even tried to buy a Kitten’s Joy [for pinhooking],” he adds while noting that prices in general for suitable weanlings were too stout to provide much upside. “I understand. People are used to doing a certain thing, and the wealthier you are, the more independent you can be,” Taylor says of some American breeders’ initial reluctance to participate in the French yearling sales.

Yet, as he has envisioned the initiative, there could be some multi-dimensional benefits for the right clients with appropriate horses. Since Deauville is much like Saratoga Springs, New York, where Taylor Made has long been the leading consignor by number of yearlings catalogued in the Fasig-Tipton Saratoga select sale in early August, there are some parallels that should be appealing. “A lot of people are in this business for other reasons. They want to make a little money – they want to make a lot of money if they can, but they’re also in it for other reasons. To have a few horses to go in on some pinhooks, travel to France and go to Deauville, that would be a nice vacation while having a reason to go over there too,” Taylor says. “We might end up trying to buy some weanlings this year and try to put some people in on them who want to go over there,” he adds. “We have a lot of clients at Saratoga who say, ‘I want a horse at Saratoga – I just want to go up there and have something to do.’ I think Deauville is the same kind of place. It’s fun, great food, and the weather is great and there’s great racing – it’s just a good place to be.” Duncan Taylor: “I say we’ve got to think differently. diff erently. You can’t always do the exact same thing”

A paddock view of Haras de Gouffern, with whom Taylor Made Sales Agency have joined forces to present yearlings at Deauville for the first time this year

For this year, the Gouffern Taylor Made consignment is made up of five colts. Two were bred in America by Marbat, the breeding establishment of Saudi Arabian Sheikh Abdullah Almaddah, which has worked in the past with both Taylor Made and Jean-Pierre de Gasté of Gouffern and ITC. Lot 92 is a grey Giant’s Causeway colt bred by Marbat out of the Empire Maker mare Grey Lina. The colt is a half-brother to stakes winner Royal By Nature. Marbat’s other yearling in the consignment is lot 315, a Union Rags colt out of the stakes-placed Rahy mare Palazzo Babe. One of the consignment’s most eyecatching yearlings by pedigree is lot 184, a chestnut colt from the first crop of The Gurkha and from the family of many high-profile European

Group 1 winners including Chicquita, Magic Wand and Magical Romance, as well as Melbourne Cup winner Rekindling. Lot 184 was purchased by ITC for 40,000gns at Tattersalls as a foal last year. The other colts in the consignment are lot 159, a son of Gutaifan out of a daughter of Italian champion Saganeca who produced Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe winner Sagamix, Group 1 winner Sagacity and the dams of Group 1 winners Sageburg and Japan, and lot 281, a son of Iffraaj who is a half-brother to Group 3 winner Queen Of Bermuda. While he would like to have a larger consignment at Deauville, Taylor says he knows this project is one that requires patience and diligence. “It just takes time. I was looking back, trying not to be

too discouraged, at our first consignments with Taylor Made back in 1978 and we had a bunch of $8,000 and $10,000 horses. It was hard at first to convince people to sell with us in America, so we know you’ve just got to work hard and keep your nose to the grindstone and show opportunity,” he says. Taylor Made is well established now as America’s top consignor by numbers and gross sales. And while Taylor does not foresee doing huge business in Europe, Taylor Made will continue to sell at the Tattersalls December sale, as it did last year, in addition to the Deauville yearling sale. “We’re never going to be as big over there like we are in Kentucky because our whole infrastructure is in Kentucky. But yes, if we think it’s good for our customers, we’re going to advise them that we can do this,” Taylor says.

SUMMER YEARLINGS GOFFS UK

GOFFS UK PREMIER YEARLING SALE GGWhen Premier Yearling Sale: Tuesday, August 27 and Wednesday, August 28, at 10am; also Silver Yearling Sale: Thursday, August 29, at 10am GGWhere Goffs UK, Sandall Beat Road, Leger Way, Doncaster GG2018 results From 473 offered, 420 sold (89%) for turnover of £19,066,500 (-4%), an average of £45,396 (-10%) and median of £35,000 (-5%) GGRecord price £380,000, paid by Sackville Donald for a Gleneagles colt out of Lady Eclair from DONCASTER Newsells Park Stud in 2018

Half a dozen top-notch performers sourced from Doncaster

A’Ali

2-year-old bay colt by Society Rock out of Motion Lass, by Motivator This year’s leading two-year-old sprinter has been a money maker for connections at each stage of his career. His breeder Tally-Ho Stud sold him to Howson and Houldsworth Bloodstock and Star Bloodstock at the Goffs UK Premier Yearling Sale for £35,000 and the purchasers resold him to Stroud Coleman Bloodstock for £135,000 at the Goffs UK Breeze-Up Sale in April. A’Ali has almost recouped his owner Sheikh Duaij Al Khalifa’s outlay in just three runs, having broken his maiden in the Norfolk Stakes at Royal Ascot and following up in the Prix Robert Papin at Deauville. Alas, there are no more yearlings to come by A’Ali’s ill-fated sire Society Rock, but there are 25 lots from vendor Tally-Ho Stud to choose from in this year’s Goffs Premier Yearling Sale catalogue. A Mehmas half-sister to Melbourne Memories (lot 162) and a half-brother to Terror by the same sire (241) catch the eye.

Advertise

3yo b c Showcasing-Furbelow (Pivotal) Advertise is some stallion prospect. Martyn Meade’s charge won the National and July Stakes and finished runner-up in the Coventry and Dewhurst Stakes at two, and has taken the Commonwealth

eight lots by the sire to pick from at Goffs UK Premier this year, including a colt out of Showcasing’s Listed-placed sister Bouvardia (lot 258), while Oakgrove Stud returns to the sale with a brace of fillies by Oasis Dream (204) and Iffraaj (357).

Golden Horde

Laurens and (right) Advertise: nine Group 1 wins between them

Cup and Prix Maurice de Gheest either side of finishing second in the July Cup this season at three. What’s more, he is by popular young sire Showcasing out of a Pivotal mare from a classy family. Despite the riches he has already earned on the track and will continue to attract at stud, his story began when he was purchased by Dermot Farrington for just £60,000 from the draft of Jamie Railton Sales Agency at Doncaster. There are seven lots by Showcasing in this year’s Goffs UK Premier Yearling Sale, and 11 set to be sent up by Railton – including an Adaay half-brother to Heartache (lot 15), a Havana Gold colt out of Listed winner Semayyel (87) and a Frankel filly out of Group 1-placed Ainippe (210).

Daahyeh

2yo ch f Bated BreathAffluent (Oasis Dream) Daahyeh has been crossing swords with Raffle Prize to be considered the best two-year-old filly seen in Europe this year. The Bated Breath filly, trained by Roger Varian for Sheikh Nasser Bin Hamad Al Khalifa, beat Mark Johnston’s charge when both made their debut at Newmarket and then won the Albany Stakes at Royal Ascot by daylight. Next time out she finished second to Raffle Prize in the Duchess of Cambridge Stakes at the July festival. Daahyeh was purchased by Oliver St Lawrence for £75,000 from the Goffs UK Premier Yearling Sale from the draft of her breeder Oakgrove Stud. Fans of Bated Breath have

2yo ch c Lethal Force-Entreat (Pivotal) Trainer Clive Cox is a past master at unearthing top-class horses at knock-down prices, many times at Doncaster. Subsequent celebrities he bought as yearlings there include Gilt Edge Girl, Harry Angel and Reckless Abandon, and the latest is Golden Horde. The son of Cox’s former stable star Lethal Force was purchased for £65,000 from the Highclere Stud draft at last year’s Goffs UK Premier Yearling Sale and has won two of his four starts including the Group 2 Richmond Stakes at Glorious Goodwood, taking the scalp of the highly regarded Threat, this month. There is one Lethal Force colt in the 2019 catalogue, who happens to be a half-brother to recent Superlative Stakes second Juan Elcano (lot 188). Also available is none other than a Mehmas half-brother to Golden Horde (319).

Laurens

4yo b f Siyouni-Recambe (Cape Cross) Other horses may have won more top-level races and

achieved higher ratings, but few have endeared themselves to the public like Laurens has. The admirable four-year-old, trained by Karl Burke for John Dance, last month sealed her sixth Group 1 victory in the Prix Rothschild in typical fashion, her huge stride taking her to the front and putting her rivals under pressure, and scoring convincingly despite idling close to home. Laurens, bought by Dance for £220,000 from Doncaster in 2016, has also finished second in the 1,000 Guineas and Lockinge Stakes and, with her stunning physique and fine pedigree also taken into account, must rank as one of the most priceless breeding prospects in training. Laurens’ sire Siyouni has a four-strong representation in this year’s Goffs UK Premier catalogue, including

a well-bred filly from WH Bloodstock (lot 395), while her vendor Coulonces Sales has eight entered.

Safe Voyage

6yo b g Fast CompanyShishangaan (Mujadil) The Goffs UK Premier Yearling Sale is known for selling physically forward types who show their talent on the track early in their racecourse careers, but there are a fair number of late bloomers who come under the hammer at Doncaster too. Take Safe Voyage, a £52,000 purchase by Richard Knight, for example. The son of Fast Company ran once at two, plied his trade in lowly handicaps at three, improved to an official mark of 88 at four and took another leap forward at five, but has been in better form than ever this year at six, having won the Listed Sprint Trophy and Group 3 John of Gaunt Stakes and finished third in the Minstrel Stakes for trainer John Quinn and owner Ross Harmon. Fast Company covered an improved book in 2017 after the victory of his daughter Jet Setting in the Irish 1,000 Guineas, and ten of the resultant yearlings are on offer at the Premier sale including a half-brother to Group 3 winner Circumvent from Safe Voyage’s vendor Owenstown Stud (lot 89). 89 MARTIN STEVENS

SUMMER YEARLINGS GOFFS UK

Bated Breath is enjoying a breakthrough year and his colt hails from an outstanding Juddmonte family Martin Stevens picks a dozen yearlings from the catalogue who could light up the ring at Doncaster Lot 52

bay colt by Iffraaj out of Riskit Fora Biskit, by Kodiac Consigned by Longview Stud This year marks the tenth anniversary of Iffraaj’s first-crop son Wootton Bassett selling as a yearling at Doncaster to Bobby O’Ryan for £46,000. From there, success for Wootton Bassett snowballed; he became a Group 1 winner in the Prix Jean-Luc Lagardère and then retired to Haras d’Etreham, with his own first crop yielding the European champion Almanzor. Perhaps the four Iffraaj yearlings at this year’s Goffs UK Premier Yearling Sale can spark another fairytale. This colt out of the Listed-winning Kodiac mare Riskit Fora Biskit has a particularly attractive pedigree.

Lot 129

b c Acclamation-Spotlight (Dr Fong) Highclere Stud Highclere Stud’s offering has a watertight pedigree as a son of Acclamation – sire of classy Doncaster yearling graduates such as Harbour Watch, Justice Day and Ponty Acclaim – and a brother to Group 3-winning sprinter Projection. The colt is out of the Grade 2-winning Dr Fong mare Spotlight, a half-sister to the dam of Group 1 performers Rostropovich and Zoffany, from a prolific family nurtured by the Goulandris family at Hesmonds Stud.

Lot 131

b c Dark Angel-Staceymac (Elnadim) Yeomanstown Stud Dark Angel has risen to become one of the most reliable sources of high-class juveniles and sprinters in Britain or Ireland, and many Doncaster yearling graduates have helped him get there – think Estidhkaar, Gabrial, Harry Angel, Lily’s Angel, Log Out Island, Markaz and Yafta. This colt from Yeomanstown Stud, which almost single-handedly built Dark Angel into a success, is a brother to another by the sire who graduated from Goffs UK to Group company, in dual Listed scorer and Queen Mary Stakes runner-up Easton Angel.

Lot 147

ch c Pivotal-Sugar Mill (Oasis Dream) Houghton Bloodstock Pivotal has proved to be an influential sire of sires through

Extortionist (gold cap, and clockwise from top left), Easton Angel, Marsh Hawk and (inset) True Valour: close relations will be on offer to these classy performers

the likes of Farhh, Kyllachy and Siyouni, and arguably an even better broodmare sire, his daughters having produced numerous Group 1 winners including Advertise, Defoe, Hermosa, Magical and Veracious this year alone. He is still a fine source of winners in his own right, too, as the likes of Addeybb, Avilius and Siyarafina have shown this year. That dictates this colt, the second foal out of the very well bred Oasis Dream mare Sugar Mill, cannot be ignored – especially as the dam’s first produce, a Gleneagles filly, made £140,000 at this sale last year and awaits her debut for Karl Burke.

b f Kodiac-Sutton Veny (Acclamation) Camas Park Stud Kodiac encapsulates the ethos of Doncaster yearling sales, as his progeny are generally physically forward, not short on pace and possess a liberal dash of class. Goffs UK Premier Sale graduates by the sire include Elleval, Fox Champion, Kodyanna, Prince Of Lir and Tiggy Wiggy. There are a baker’s dozen by Kodiac on offer in this year’s catalogue and one who stands out is Camas Park Stud’s filly out of Sutton Veny, a five-time winner by Acclamation who has already clicked with Tally-Ho Stud’s totemic sire to produce the dual Group 3 winner True Valour.

Lot 210

b f Frankel-Ainippe (Captain Rio) Jamie Railton Sales Agency Only the second lot by the great Frankel to go under the hammer at the Goffs UK Premier Yearling Sale, after the daughter of high-class sprinter Ladies Are Forever who was sold to Dermot Farrington for £180,000 two years ago. This filly, due to be presented by Jamie Railton Sales Agency, is the first foal out of the Captain Rio mare Ainippe, a dual Group 3 winner who found only Legatissimo and Cladocera too good in the Group 1 Matron Stakes.

Lot 258

ch c Bated BreathBouvardia (Oasis Dream) Hillwood Stud Bated Breath is enjoying a breakthrough year, with a Royal Ascot treble courtesy of Biometric, Daahyeh and Space Traveller, and Simply Breathless and Worth Waiting scoring at Pattern level. This colt by the sire hails from an outstanding Juddmonte family, the dam Bouvardia having been bought by Barry Walters for 65,000gns at the Tattersalls December Mares Sale in 2017. Bouvardia is a Listed-placed Oasis Dream sister to Gimcrack Stakes winner and successful sire Showcasing and half-sister to Listed-winning sprinter

Camacho, out of Arabesque, a Listed-winning daughter of Cheveley Park Stakes heroine Prophecy.

Lot 299

b f No Nay Never-Desert Sky (Green Desert) Oaks Farm Stables Last month’s Listed Rose Bowl Stakes winner Shadn – a daughter of No Nay Never out of the 1997-foaled Sadler’s Wells mare Amethyst – taught us a salutary lesson about the perils of overlooking progeny of older mares. Here is a filly by the same exciting young sire out of another more mature dam – the Green Desert mare Desert Sky, also foaled in 1997. Desert Sky won the Listed Silver Flash Stakes in her racecourse pomp in the previous millennium and has produced Grade 2 winner No Jet Lag and Group 3-placed Optari.

Lot 307

b c Dandy Man-Dream Date (Oasis Dream) Lynn Lodge Stud Visitors to the Goffs UK Premier Yearling Sale will be spoilt for choice of lots by Ballyhane Stud’s flagship sire Dandy Man, who has been on the mark this year with star-crossed 1,000 Guineas runner-up Lady Kaya and Fred Darling Stakes winner Dandhu; there are 22 on offer in total. Lynn Lodge Stud’s colt is a brother to Dandy Man’s

very first stakes winner, Extortionist, who struck in the Windsor Castle Stakes at Royal Ascot in 2013 and went on to win the Coral Charge and take third in the Nunthorpe. The dam is a winning daughter of Oasis Dream and Listed scorer Femme Fatale.

Lot 376

b/gr f Lope De Vega-Iromea (Dansili) Newsells Park Stud The trio of yearlings by red-hot sire Lope De Vega available at Doncaster this month are sure to have plenty of admirers; this filly from Newsells Park Stud has appeal from the top to the bottom of her female family too. She is the first foal out of the Listed-winning Dansili mare Iromea, who in turn is out of In The Mist, a winning Pivotal half-sister to Prix du Moulin victress Grey Lilas, later dam of dual French Classic heroine Golden Lilac, and Newmarket Stakes scorer Kandahar Run. Previous foals born on the Lope De Vega-Dansili cross include Grade 1 winner Capla Temptress, high-class Mer Et Nuages and this season’s talented two-year-old Lope Y Fernandez.

Lot 380

b/gr c Dark Angel-Jellicle Ball (Invincible Spirit) Glenvale Stud With Dark Angel having ascended through the stallion ranks, his fee having been ratcheted up to €65,000

in 2017, the resultant ten yearlings who have made it into the Goffs UK Premier Yearling Sale all have attractive pedigrees. One of the highlights is this colt who is the first foal out of Jellicle Ball, a Group 3-placed Invincible Spirit half-sister to Ballysax Stakes winner Puncher Clynch descended from Irish 1,000 Guineas and Yorkshire Oaks heroine Sarah Siddons.

Lot 382

b f Kingman-Kambura (Literato) Ballyhimikin Stud It’s not difficult to envisage all three lots by stellar second-season sire Kingman at the Goffs UK Premier Yearling Sale being in strong demand, especially as all of the trio are out of accomplished dams. This filly, consigned by Ballyhimikin Stud, is the first foal out of the Listed-winning and Group 3-placed Literato mare Kambura, a half-sister to fellow stakes winners Verba, Welcome Millenium and Ximb. But it would be unfair not to mention the other two ‘Kingmen’ in dispatches: Hillwood Stud’s colt out of the Listed-winning Exceed And Excel mare Shamandar (lot 92) and Highclere Stud’s colt out of Listed-placed Asaawir, making him a half-brother to Group-placed two-year-olds Hairy Rocket and Marsh Hawk (230).

SUMMER YEARLINGS GOFFS UK

Martin Stevens talks to Gerry Meehan about his new venture Skyline Thoroughbreds

I

T IS neither favouritism nor fawning to say that Gerry Meehan is one of the most respected yearling managers in the industry. Ask any independent voice who they think is the best in the business at bringing along young sales stock and you can be guaranteed his name will come up again and again. Meehan forged his reputation during 17 years at Newsells Park Stud, where he was instrumental in the operation regularly featuring among the leading vendors at the most prestigious yearling sales. During that time he oversaw the preparation and sale of ten lots who sold for seven figures, including the recent Grand Prix de Paris winner Japan, as well as the Gleneagles colt who fetched a record £380,000 at the Goffs UK Premier Yearling Sale last year. Meehan, who had held similar roles at Side Hill Stud, Cheveley Park Stud and Fair Winter Farm before joining Newsells Park, had his dedication and expertise recognised at the Godolphin Stud and Stable Staff Awards in 2014, where he won the stud staff accolade. This year he left Newsells Park to strike out in his own venture, joining with Simon and Emma Capon, whose silks were carried to Royal Ascot success by Thanks Be in June, in launching Skyline Thoroughbreds, a yearling preparation and consignment business based at Glebe Stud in Newmarket. The new operation presents its first draft at this year’s Premier Yearling Sale with five colts – three by Brazen Beau and one each by Awtaad and Exceed And Excel – and two fillies by Hot Streak and Muhaarar bound for Doncaster. Explaining the genesis of Skyline Thoroughbreds, Meehan says: “I’d always wanted to try raising and prepping yearlings for myself, but I’d never been in a position to rent a farm that we could run a small business from. “Simon and Emma had also wanted to have their own stud farm and so when they approached me with the idea of joining forces, it felt like a perfect fit. “They’d been looking for a suitable stud farm for a few years, and when Glebe Stud came on to the market it all just started falling into place. I was turning 50 this year and I knew if I didn’t give it a go now, then I never would.” Glebe Stud has 70 acres of lush grazing, including large

Now or never as one of the most respected and admired yearling managers branches out paddocks with field shelters that are ideal for raising weanlings over autumn, winter and into spring. “I always say that, realistically, yearling prep starts as soon as the foal is weaned,” says Meehan. “Therefore we aim to build up a base of clients who send their foals to us when they’re weaned so that we can raise them, monitor them and really get to know them. That makes

prepping them as yearlings a much more straightforward process.”

T

HE stud also boasts 37 boxes, two horse walkers, a lunge ring, an outdoor school, a purpose-built show area and ten individual colt paddocks, plus larger paddocks for the fillies – “so that every yearling can still enjoy down time every

day during their sales prep,” Meehan says. Skyline Thoroughbreds has the facilities, then, but how has attracting clients and their horses gone since getting the show on the road at the start of the year? “Our inaugural sales drafts for Goffs UK and Tattersalls are a mix of Simon and Emma’s homebreds, our pinhooks and outside clients’ yearlings,” Meehan says. “We have seven

heading to the Premier Sale, three for October Book 1 and then around 20 for Books 2 and 3. “We were very lucky as word seemed to spread quite quickly about Skyline Thoroughbreds and before we knew it, the stables started to fill. We hope that being full continues after the October Sales and we have weanlings sent to us to raise over the winter and then prep for the 2020 sales season.

‘Building up a solid client base was never going to happen overnight, but we will continue to work hard to ensure we get to where we want to be’

“Building up a solid client base was never going to happen overnight, but we will continue to work hard to ensure we get to where we want to be.” Looking forward to those first Goffs UK Premier yearlings who will hopefully present the business in a positive light, Meehan says: “It’s a lovely draft we’re taking to Doncaster and we’re really looking forward to our first sale with our own Skyline Thoroughbreds door cards. “All seven yearlings are ready for this sale and all walk

Skyline Thoroughbreds’ Goffs UK draft Lot 68 b f Hot StreakSabrewing (Fast Company) The first foal of a winning sister to Norfolk Stakes scorer Baitha Alga (below) 226 b c Brazen BeauArdbrae Tara (Galileo) Out of a placed daughter of Galileo and Irish 1,000 Guineas second Ardbrae Lady 386 b c Brazen Beau-Kicker Rock (Fastnet Rock) Son of a Fastnet Rock half-sister to stakes winner High Maintenance 426 b f MuhaararMemoria (Teofilo) Out of a winning half-sister to very well – I’ve absolutely no doubt that they’ll be turning heads when the showing commences on the Saturday. “This may sound a bit cheesy, but all of them genuinely have a great attitude. Granted, they all have quite different characters, but we don’t have a negative personality among them; we’ve enjoyed prepping all of them.” Doncaster is renowned for selling physically forward yearlings, often blessed with blistering speed, which made choosing those who would head to the Premier Sale easy for Meehan and his partners. “Selecting yearlings for sales is usually a fairly straightforward process as I have a good idea what sort of physical and pedigree each sale is looking for,” he says. “When I’m selecting my own yearlings to show to the

Group 3 winner Miss Anabaa; family of Owington 428 b c Brazen BeauMiaplacidus (Shamardal) Dam is a winning Shamardal mare from the family of Blue Duster and Zieten 435 b c Exceed And ExcelMiss Chicane (Refuse To Bend) Out of a winning half-sister to top two-year-old Best Terms, also by Exceed And Excel 468 br c AwtaadNorth Mare (Manduro) Son of a winning Manduro mare from a prolific German family team from Goffs UK my first consideration would be what does the individual look like and the second would be who’s the sire. “You need to take a precocious type of yearling to the Premier Sale and preferably with a pedigree to match the physique. However, the days of only two-year-old-types being offered at Doncaster are diminishing; for me, I like to take early maturing types who look like they’ll go on as three-year-olds to Doncaster.”

E

VERYTHING looks in place, then, for Skyline Thoroughbreds to make a bold start with its first yearling consignment. But that is not the end of this interview; an opportunity to

pick the brains of a universally admired yearling manager cannot be passed up. So, is Meehan prepared to share the secrets of his success? “I think attention to detail is a big part of it,” he says. “Ever since I was a young lad working with my father at Ballymacoll Stud, I seemed to have the knack of noticing when a horse wasn’t quite right. There won’t always necessarily be physical signs, but a bit of a change in their personality or enthusiasm for what they’re doing can tell you a lot. “If a horse isn’t happy, it simply won’t thrive and won’t blossom during prep. Only last week I moved a filly to a different stable block as her attitude wasn’t great where she was, and instantly she was a different filly, she settled and became a lot nicer to deal with. “Having a vision of what the finished yearling should look like is also hugely important, as that gives you your visual goal when you start the prep. “I do a 12-week sales preparation so that the yearlings aren’t rushed, nor are their joints put under any pressure by excess work. You can just slowly build their strength and physique and you have time to make adjustments to their prep if you need to.” Budding yearling consignors should take note, as should prospective purchasers at Doncaster who have the opportunity to buy young horses whose minds and muscle tone have benefited from Meehan’s diligence and know how.

Baden-Baden sales alumni who have excelled on the track in recent years Waldpfad

5-year-old bay horse by Shamardal out of Waldbeere, by Mark Of Esteem Who said German breeding was all about staying power? Dominik Moser’s charge put some talented homegrown sprinters, including Khaadem and The Tin Man, in their place when he struck in the Group 3 Hackwood Stakes at Newbury last month. The son of Shamardal, raced by breeder Gestüt Brümmerhof after registering as a vendor buyback at €390,000 at BBAG in 2015, is from a fine family and one in fantastic form. He is a half-brother to multiple

Group 3 winner Wiesenpfad and Preis der Diana third Waldtraut out of a daughter of Mark Of Esteem and champion Wurftaube, dam of Deutsches Derby hero Waldpark and granddam of St Leger winner Masked Marvel. Wurftaube is ancestress of 2019 stakes winners Al Dabaran, Urwald and Waldgeist. This year’s BBAG Yearling Sale offers the chance to buy into this dynasty through, among others, Haras d’Annebault’s Maxios filly (lot 32), Gestüt Hachetal’s Reliable Man filly (108) and Ronald Rauscher’s Protectionist colt (177).

La Force

5yo b/br m Power-La Miraculeuse (Samum) Listed-placed at two in Italy, La Force has found a new lease of life – on dirt rather than turf, unusually for a European ex-pat – since being exported to join trainer Paddy Gallagher in California. The Power mare finished second to Unique Bella in two Grade 1s, the Beholder Mile and Clement L Hirsch Stakes, and was runner-up to Vale Dori in the Zenyatta Stakes at four in 2018. She landed the Grade 2 Santa Maria Stakes and took third in the Clement L Hirsch at five this year. La Force was originally

unsold as a yearling by breeder Gestüt Karlshof in Baden-Baden at just €22,000. The vendor is back this year with nine lots, including an Outstrip filly out of a sister to German Derby winner Kamsin (lot 136) and a Pastorius colt out of Group 3 scorer Lady Jacamira (193).

Arctic Fire

10yo b g Soldier HollowAdelma (Sternkoenig) The ten-year-old, a Cheltenham Festival winner in 2017, might seem like an odd choice of example for the riches at the BBAG Yearling Sale, but he highlights the resale value of the young horses on offer, many with stout pedigrees – the sort

who, if they show talent, could find themselves in demand from Australia, the Middle East or the National Hunt sphere. Arctic Fire was originally a €3,000 purchase by Crispin de Moubray at Baden-Baden and, after winning easily in the French provinces at three, was resold to Willie Mullins’ talent scout Pierre Boulard for €110,000. He has since won seven races, Arctic Fire: highlights resale value of the lots on offer

including the Hatton’s Grace and County Hurdle, and finished second in Champion Hurdles at Cheltenham, Punchestown and Leopardstown. Arctic Fire hails from the first crop of Soldier Hollow, who has since developed into Germany’s leading stallion. There are 21 by the sire of German Classic winners Pastorius, Serienholde and Weltstar, including a half-brother to Listed winner Rumh, the dam of ( Wild Illusion (lot 161), and a colt out of Group 3 scorer Quaduna ((158), both from Gestüt Fährhof. SUMMER YEARLINGS BBAG EDWARD WHITAKER (RACINGPOST.COM/PHOTOS)

Martin Stevens talks to Julia Baum, who with husband Gregor operates leading German operation Gestüt Brümmerhof

T

HE name of Gestüt Brümmerhof was written into turf history as the breeder of brilliant Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe and King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes heroine Danedream, but it is far from a one-horse operation. That much has been proved this summer, as the north German stud owned and managed by Gregor and Julia Baum is the owner and breeder of Waldpfad, who sprang a surprise by landing the Hackwood Stakes at Newbury by daylight, and also of Diamanta, the decisive winner of the Preis der Diana at Düsseldorf. The run of success has come at just the right time to advertise the brilliant Brümmerhof bloodlines available to purchase at the BBAG Yearling Sale at Baden-Baden this month. The stud’s ten-strong draft includes a Golden Horn half-brother to Diamanta and a half-brother to stakes-placed Anna Mia and Anna Pivola by Diamanta’s sire Maxios, and is completed by colts by Adlerflug, Lord Of England, Oasis Dream, Siyouni, Soldier Hollow and Zoffany, and fillies by Lope De Vega and Sea The Stars. That list contains a blend of progeny of sires who are domestic big-hitters and those with more stark international appeal, but Julia Baum insists she and her husband are not hostages to stallion fashion. “For years we’ve stuck to the guideline of selling our colts and keeping the fillies,” she says. “As we don’t have our own stallion at home, only shares in Adlerflug and Maxios, we have a wide variety of choice. “We breed commercially, but the first thing we do when planning matings is to look at the pedigree, look at the horse – their physique and temperament – and then we choose the sires who suit best, not just those who are hot at the moment. “We want to breed racehorses. That’s our main ambition; it’s not about making money.” Waldpfad, a beautifully bred son of Shamardal who was originally a €390,000 vendor buyback as a yearling at BBAG, and Diamanta, one of those fillies retained to race by the stud, are certainly doing their best to suggest the Baums are achieving their goal. Waldpfad has quite the interesting biography, as Julia explains: “We sent his dam Waldbeere to Shamardal as she suited a stallion with his conformation, and we knew that he’d add a little speed to her family, which is known for stayers. We always like to add a little spice to those good German staying lines, to keep them relevant and up to date.”

Julia (left) and Gregor Baum (right) in celebratory mood after the Gestüt Brümmerhof-bred Danedream’s Arc triumph in 2011

‘German breeding isn’t only about stayers – we have a lot of speed too’

Waldbeere’s family is very good, and stamina-laden, indeed. She is an unraced daughter of Mark Of Esteem and German St Leger winner Wurftaube, making her a sister to Falmouth Stakes runner-up Waldmark, the dam of St Leger hero Masked Marvel and granddam of current middle-distance star Waldgeist. She is also a half-sister to German Derby winner Waldpark, and had produced the multiple Group 3 winner Wiesenpfad and Preis der Diana runner-up Waldtraut before Waldpfad arrived. “Waldpfad was a very good-looking yearling but we wanted a certain price for him at the BBAG sale that couldn’t be generated,” continues Baum. “So we took the horse home and syndicated him with two other parties of owners under the name Stall Chevalier

d’Or and sent him to Andreas Wöhler to be trained. “He ran very bravely as a three- and four-year-old over a mile, but he never coped with steps up to black-type level so, as the other parties wanted to get out, we decided to dissolve the partnership by selling the horse at the BBAG sales in October and we got the horse back. “We took him to our private trainer Dominik Moser and changed some things about his health routine and way of training. He responded very quickly to the changes and soon showed us that he preferred much shorter distances. We’ve always been fans of Shamardal in our breeding, and weren’t really surprised to discover his sprinting talent. “He came back out this year after a break of several months

W

ALDPFAD was sent off a 33-1 chance at Newbury, a price that probably factored in punters’ unfamiliarity with classy German sprinters. He is not the first, by any means, as the likes of Auenklang and Moser’s Summer Stakes winner Gracia Directa preceded him; but the country is much better known for its many middle-distance and staying celebrities. The Baums are keen to keep sharpening those stout German families. “When it comes to our own matings, we do like to add some speed to our German lines as we think that’s what the modern racehorse needs nowadays,” says Julia. “German breeding isn’t only about stayers – we do have a lot of speed in our breeding too, thanks to the likes of Big Shuffle, Areion and Dashing Blade. We have these great German lines full of stamina, but we always like to add a little speed to be more competitive.” Waldbeere produced a Postponed filly foal this year and her two-year-old Kingman filly is in training with Moser under the name Waldkonigin. “We’re big fans of this W family,” says Baum. “We’re very lucky that we have a large share of it at Brümmerhof, breeding from four other mares including Wildfahrte and her daughter Wild Approach, who was fourth in the Oak Tree Stakes at Goodwood three years ago.” And what is next for Waldpfad, who with

reproductive organs still intact is making up into a rather attractive stallion prospect? “He has two options now,” says Baum. “He can run in the Hungerford Stakes back at Newbury or the Goldene Peitsche at Baden-Baden. “Dominik prefers England, but we’re still thinking a little of Baden-Baden, as it’s such a prestigious race. The most valuable race would certainly be Newbury though, thinking of his future as a stallion, being a son of Shamardal from such a wonderful family.” Brümmerhof is one of the few German outfits not afraid to compete in Britain, and the Baums are self-confessed Anglophiles. “We’ve always been great fans of British racing and breeding,” says Baum. “We bought our best mares in Newmarket and we’re always sending a lot of mares to be covered in Britain to keep our breeding on an international level. “Racing our horses there is always very special for us; you need the right horse to be competitive. We always say, even losing in England doesn’t feel as bitter as it does at home.” Brümmerhof recently experienced a big dose of bitterness that made the Preis der Diana triumph with Diamanta – a first Group 1 won by a horse carrying home silks – all the more poignant. Baum says: “We bred and owned Anna Monda, who won the German 1,000 Guineas and Europa-Meile, but we sold her to Teruya Yoshida just before she won the Group 1 Premio Vittorio di Capua, so Diamanta made our dream

come true by winning the German Oaks, a race every breeder wants to win. It has secured the future of the stud, to have such a mare in the broodmare band. “But Oaks week started with mixed feelings as our favourite for the race, Anna Pivola, suffered a career-ending injury on the Monday, so winning the Oaks with the second string was a rollercoaster ride of emotions. Tears of sorrow on Monday turned into tears of joy on Sunday. “We didn’t go to Düsseldorf, as we decided after the setback with Anna Pivola to stay in our house on Sylt in the North Sea, but the happiness about this win made the North Sea even more unruly that afternoon!” What made Diamanta’s victory all the sweeter was that she is a daughter of Maxios, a stallion in whom Brümmerhof holds a share. The dual Group 1-winning son of Monsun was retired to Gestüt Fährhof amid great expectations but has had a quiet start with his early runners. In fact, with his oldest crop aged four, Diamanta is his first Pattern winner of any kind.

B

AUM says. “His offspring are very sensitive, they need a certain kind of management and I’m very happy that we were able to prove that he’s able to sire Group 1 horses if you just leave them under the radar in training and don’t push them too early.” Now the Baums can look forward to presenting the Golden Horn half-brother to Diamanta at BBAG this month. “I think he’s the best colt we’ll show at the sales,” says Baum. “He just has something about him. He developed very well and I’m very pleased with him.” And what would Baum say to agents, buyers and trainers contemplating whether to visit Baden-Baden? “You should never leave out BBAG sales, you can buy very sound horses from very sound German lines there,” is the answer. “We do only have a small population of foals but recent history has shown that Germany is able to breed international champions like Danedream, Sea the Moon, Lando, Monsun, Tiger Hill, Shirocco, Lomitas and so on.” The chance to emulate Brümmerhof’s success by buying their stock should be incentive enough to book that ticket to Baden-Baden. Sea The Stars filly’s pedigree entitles her to excel on the track and in the paddocks Lot 57

b f Adlerflug-Enjoy The Life (Medicean) Gestüt Hof Ittlingen Adlerflug ranks as one of Germany’s best proven sires, having supplied three Group 1 winners – Iquitos, Ito and Lacazar – as well as the Group 1-placed pair Savoir Vivre and Wunder. There are 11 of his yearlings on offer at BBAG and they are from the first crop conceived at a fee increased from €5,500 to €12,000 in 2017. This filly illustrates the better mares sent to the sire, as she is a half-sister to Deutsches Derby runner-up Enjoy Vijay out of the Listed-winning Medicean mare Enjoy The Life. The dam’s last three yearlings at Baden-Baden have sold for €100,000, €49,000 and €58,000.

b/gr f Sea The StarsSaldenehre (Highest Honor) Gestüt Wittekindshof There are four chances to buy a yearling by the great Sea The Stars at BBAG this August, including this filly who has a pedigree that entitles her to excel on the track and consequently holds considerable residual value. She is out of Saldenehre, a Highest Honor half-sister to German champion three-year-old filly Saldentigerin – later dam of Preis der Diana winner Salomina – and three other stakes winners. Saldenehre is already the dam of another Preis der Diana victress in Serienholde and Group 3 scorer Serienhoehe.

b c Kingman-Weltmacht (Mount Nelson) Gestüt Röttgen After the outstanding start made by Kingman with his first three-year-old runners this year, you can be sure the world and his wife will want to buy his yearlings at the sales in the coming months.
