SUMMER YEARLINGS FIRST-SEASON SIRES
Welcome to the essential sales digest
H
ERE we are then, on the eve of a yearling sales season that looks more familiar, though not totally. The Tattersalls Ireland September Yearling Sale is to take place at Park Paddocks, Newmarket this year, but the three auctions we are mainly focusing on for this supplement – the Goffs UK Premier Sale, BBAG’s highlight of the year, and the Arqana August Sale – are not just at the right time of year but in the right locations too. In particular, it is marvellous to see Arqana’s premier auction back in Deauville. The catalogue promises much – the Galileo quartet listed will draw attention after their sire’s death last month – and the same goes for the sales in Doncaster and Iffezheim, and hopefully trade will prove as robust as it generally has been through 2021 so far. Past graduates, catalogue picks, interviews with pivotal players, sires with their first yearlings for sale, factfiles and statistics are the parts of the Summer Yearlings supplement – which hopefully add up to an agreeable sum. It is frightening how the year is zipping by and we’ll be putting together the Autumn version shortly. Thanks to the advertisers who have supported Summer Yearlings, and appreciation in advance for those who do likewise with our next offering. At a time when the waters are choppy and uncertainty, dare I say, not calmed by myriad calls for unnecessary change – the Derby to be run in July, to be shortened in trip, geldings to be allowed to run in this, that and t’other, the November Handicap to be run in May – the anchor of the yearling sales in our sights taking place where they are supposed to, and when, is welcome indeed.

R
OARING LION is perhaps the highest profile name to make his debut in the sire index of yearling sale catalogues this season, although the honour is bittersweet as his first crop is also his only crop. The son of Kitten’s Joy lit up the 2018 Flat season with his victories in the Dante, Coral-Eclipse, Juddmonte International, Irish Champion Stakes and Queen Elizabeth II Stakes, plus big runs in the 2,000 Guineas and Derby, in an unusually ambitious campaign. Roaring Lion retired to join the Qatar Racing stallions at Tweenhills at four and covered a glittering book of mares befitting his status as reigning European champion, but tragedy struck when he succumbed to colic soon after arriving in New Zealand for shuttle duty. His resultant solitary crop comprises 130 beautifully bred yearlings, and 13 of those are set to appear at the late summer yearling sales – eight at Arqana August, four at Goffs UK Premier and one at BBAG. Four of those entered up for Deauville are out of black-type winners, namely Haras de la Perelle’s colt out of Giofra (lot 13), the La Motteraye-consigned filly out of Lbretha (38), Haras du Cadran’s filly out of Avenue Gabriel (137) and Haras des Capucines’ colt out of
The late Roaring Lion will be represented by members of his sole crop of yearlings at this year’s sales
Cheriearch (153). Another of obvious interest at that sale is the half-brother to stakes winners Rumi and Solage (96) from Ecurie des Monceaux. The four Doncaster-bound Roaring Lion yearlings are all out of black-type mares – the Jamie Railton-offered filly out of Elusive Horizon (110) and colt out of Gertrude Versed (143), Baroda Stud’s colt out of Fourth Way (135) and Hillwood Stud’s colt out of Rich Legacy (303). The sire’s offering at BadenBaden is yet another whose dam is a black-type winner. Gestüt Westerberg’s filly is out of Milan Listed scorer Bastille (65), herself a daughter of champion two-year-old Boccassini. It’s a momentous sales season for Tweenhills as the stud’s resident Group 1 winners Zoustar and Lightning Spear are also represented by their first yearlings – in the northern hemisphere, at least, in the case of Zoustar. By the Encosta De Lago stallion Northern Meteor out of a Redoute’s Choice mare,
the striking bay won the Golden Rose Stakes and Coolmore Stud Stakes at the highest level in his native Australia before he was retired to stand at Widden Stud, his joint-owner, in the Hunter Valley. He soon established himself as one of the most exciting prospects in breeding down under, having been crowned champion first-, second- and third-season sire. His four crops of racing age have yielded 23 stakes winners including star sprinters Sunlight, Zousain and Zoutori. No wonder, then, that Zoustar’s other co-owner Qatar Racing moved to shuttle the bright young thing to Tweenhills two years ago. Six of his resultant debut European yearlings are set to sell at Arqana August, while 11 are heading for Goffs UK Premier and two for the inaugural Tattersalls Somerville sale, which replaces its Ascot predecessor.
The pick of those on paper at Deauville could be Haras de Saint-Pair’s half-sister to US Grade 3 winner and Coventry Stakes third Guildsman (162) and Haras d’Etreham’s colt out of a winning Oasis Dream half-sister to in-form brothers Broome and Point Lonsdale (181). Among the pages belonging to Zoustar yearlings in the Doncaster catalogue that stand out are the filly out of dual Group 3 winner and Matron Stakes third Ainippe (3) from Furnace Mill Stud; the colt out of Listed scorer Melbourne Memories (237) from Barton Stud; the colt out of Group 1-placed Miss You Too (246) from Hillwood Stud; and the filly out of Listed winner and Rockfel Stakes third Valonia (384) from Vinesgrove Stud. Manister House Stud consigns two particularly well-bred Zoustar fillies to Goffs UK Premier – a
half-sister to King Charles II Stakes winner Surf Dancer out of Listed-winning two-year-old Beach Belle (22) and a half-sister to the smart Hot Streak filly Harmony Rose out of dual stakes winner Evil Spell (117). The pair by the sire bound for Newmarket in early September include a filly out of dual winner and Listed fourth Cordial, an Oasis Dream half-sister to Royal Ascot scorer Monarchs Glen (236), from Galloway Stud. Lightning Spear has been granted smaller books in his first three years at Tweenhills. That seems a shame as he was a durable performer with bundles of class, and he is a precious son of the influential Pivotal from the extended family of champion sire Be My Guest, to boot. As it turns out, his only two delegates to the early yearling sales are pretty impressively bred too. Stratford Place Stud takes to Goffs UK Premier a half-brother to stakes winners Acapulco Gold and Ken Colt out of Group 3-placed Velvet Revolver (386), while Jamie Railton consigns to Tattersalls Somerville a colt out of Firth of Clyde Stakes winner Dark Reckoning (243). Cracksman (left) was the best performer to retire to stud in Europe in 2019, having been awarded a sky-high RPR of 131 for each of his two wide-margin successes in the Champion Stakes at Ascot. The four-time Group 1 winner, who stands at Dalham Hall Stud, is set to put Frankel’s credentials as a sire of sires to the test for the first time. Arqana August boasts ten first-crop yearlings by the sire, including a pair of siblings to

– Cloth Of Stars to Zoustar Prix Greffulhe winners who are due to pass through the ring in quick succession – Haras de Montaigu’s half-sister to Baby Rider out of a Listed-placed half-sister to Cracksman’s Derby conqueror Wings Of Eagles (20) and Haras du Cadran’s half-brother to Roman Candle out of Group 3 runner-up Holy Dazzle (22). The quartet by Cracksman at BBAG includes an eye-catcher on pedigree in the half-sister to stakes winners Felician and Fly First out of Group 3 scorer Felicity (184). She forms part of the draft from Gestüt Haus Ittlingen. Tattersalls Somerville offers the chance to buy three by the sire, including a colt out of the Listed-placed Elysian Fields (258) from Trickledown Stud. Cracksman’s Dalham Hall Stud colleague Harry Angel (right) was the second-highest-rated member of this cohort, with an RPR of 128 given for his four-length defeat of Tasleet in the Haydock Sprint Cup. The brilliant sprinter by Dark Angel was a Goffs UK Premier graduate himself, and so it is no surprise to see ten of his debut yearlings sent to Doncaster. Standouts on pedigree include Hollyhill Stud’s half-brother to Listed winner Tashweeq (78), Stratford Place Stud’s three-parts sister to Listed scorer Thammin (144) and Natton House Thoroughbreds’ half-brother to Italian champion two-year-old filly Fly On The Night (242). There are another two Harry Angel half-siblings to stakes winners at Arqana August – the Coulonces-consigned half-brother to Silver Step (63) and Haras de Montaigu’s three-parts sister to Markazi (221). Surprisingly, perhaps, Arqana V2 has one of the best-bred yearlings by the sire, in Haras de Castillon’s half-sister to Listed winner and Middle Park Stakes third Justice Day (426). The five Harry Angel yearlings at Tattersalls Somerville include a half-brother to four winners, one of them the Group 3 runner-up Take A Deep Breath (270) from Elkington Stud. Harry Angel’s sparring partner Tasleet, a son of Showcasing from the family of Battaash who won the Duke of York Stakes and finished second in three Group 1 races, is another sire with debut yearlings on offer this summer. The Nunnery Stud resident has 11 entered in Goffs UK Premier, including a colt out of Group 3-placed Darajaat (80) from Kildaragh Stud and a
half-brother to stakes winners Pleasure Gains and Sarinda (390) from Monksland Stables, and 15 going to Tattersalls Somerville, among them a colt out of Radley Stakes winner Russian Punch (102) from Bearstone Stud and a filly out of Group 3 scorer Timarwa (150) from Aston Mullins Stud. Among the other sprinters in this category are Havana Grey, James Garfield, Kessaar, Rajasinghe, Sioux Nation, Unfortunately, US Navy Flag and Washington DC. There’s no shortage of choice when it comes to yearlings by Molecomb, Sapphire and Flying Five Stakes winner Havana Grey this summer. One of the 16 lots by the Whitsbury Manor Stud-based son of Havana Gold at Goffs UK Premier, Grangemore Stud’s colt out of Exrating (120), is the subject of a big update as his half-brother Ehraz hosed up in the Crocker Bulteel maiden at Ascot last month. Rathbarry Stud showcases its Mill Reef Stakes winner and Prix Maurice de Gheest runner-up James Garfield, a son of Exceed And Excel from the powerful Rafha family, with some nicely bred yearlings in the weeks ahead. They include a half-sister to recent Glorious Goodwood nursery winner Ever Given (215) and a half-brother to this season’s Hilary Needler Trophy winner Lady Ayresome (271), both at Goffs UK Premier. Dual Group-winning two-year-old Kessaar, who stands alongside his sire Kodiac at Tally-Ho Stud, has several offspring with punchy pedigrees set to go under the hammer. Those at Goffs UK Premier include Alice Fitzgerald’s half-brother to Weatherbys Super Sprint winner Ginger Nut (12) and Grove Stud’s colt out of a half-sister to Group 1 scorers Iridessa, Order Of Australia and Santa Barbara (374). Rajasinghe was one of the surprise packages of last year’s foal sales, and although the National Stud-based Coventry Stakes winner by Choisir has few yearlings set to go under the hammer in the coming weeks, one has made its way into the Goffs UK Premier catalogue – a
Nunnery Stud resident Tasleet is from the family of Battaash
filly out of a half-sister to the high-class Rinterval (280) from Manister House Stud. Sioux Nation, a priceless Group 1 winner by Scat Daddy who stands at Coolmore, has offspring entered in most of the early yearling sales. Camas Park Stud’s half-brother to the stakes-placed pair Crook and Thank You Next (379) at Goffs UK Premier is the one who appeals most on pedigree. The late Society Rock did many breeders and buyers a good turn despite siring only three crops, so there should be demand for progeny of his only sire son, the Springfield House Stud-based Prix Morny winner Unfortunately. Greenstone Stud presents a half-brother to this season’s Coventry Stakes third Vintage Clarets (261) at Tattersalls Somerville. Coolmore colour bearer US Navy Flag ticks the boxes of pedigree, as a War Front brother to Roly Poly out of Misty For Me, and performance, as a rare winner of the Middle Park and Dewhurst Stakes who landed the July Cup at three for good measure. His stock should be in high demand, then. The sire’s filly out of Princess Elizabeth Stakes winner Epsom Icon (1), set to be sent to Arqana August by Haras de l’Hotellerie, and colt out of Sandy Lane Stakes winner Show Rainbow (331), among the Manister House Stud draft at Goffs UK Premier, hail from strong distaff families too. Windsor Castle Stakes winner and Prix de l’Abbaye runner-up Washington DC, a rare son of his late sire Zoffany in the stallion ranks, is well represented at Doncaster this month. His custodians at Bearstone Stud have one of his best-bred lots in its draft at the Premier Sale – a half-brother to Group 2 winner and Nunthorpe third Mattmu (192). Among the top milers with first yearlings on offer this summer are Expert Eye, Gustav Klimt, Massaat, Recoletos and Saxon Warrior. Breeders’ Cup Mile hero Expert Eye, by sire of sires Acclamation and based at experienced stallion makers Banstead Manor Stud, has a bumper 13 lots at Goffs UK Premier. They include a half-sister to Listed winner Raydiance (179) consigned by Norris Bloodstock and a half-brother to £440,000 sale record-holder and Listed-placed Admiral Nelson (327) from Hillwood Stud. Coolmore-based Gustav Klimt can lay claim to being one of the fastest sons of Galileo, having finished placed in the Haydock Sprint Cup as well as the Irish 2,000 Guineas and St James’s Palace Stakes. Nanallac Stud’s colt out of
Moyglare Stud Stakes second Ugo Fire (380) at Goffs UK Premier is one of his more interestingly bred representatives this summer. Massaat, a Teofilo half-brother to Eqtidaar who ran second in the Dewhurst and 2,000 Guineas, has plenty of lots on offer at Doncaster. His home stud, Mickley, looks set to show him off to good effect with fillies out of Listed winners Delizia (85) and What’s Up Pussycat (396) featuring among its consignment to Goffs UK Premier. Prix d’Ispahan and Prix du Moulin hero Recoletos, by Whipper, has only a smattering of lots in the Arqana catalogues, but they include Haras de l’Hotellerie’s half-sister to Listed winner and Group 2-placed Dariyma (349) in the August sale. Saxon Warrior (above) ranks as one of the most keenly anticipated first-crop sires at the 2021 yearling sales. By Japanese breed-shaper Deep Impact out of Galileo’s
champion two-year-old daughter Maybe, he was an unbeaten Group 1 winner at two and took the 2,000 Guineas at three. He stayed further than a mile, too, finishing a neck second to Roaring Lion in both the Coral-Eclipse and Irish Champion Stakes. Arqana August is the place to go for the widest selection of Saxon Warrior yearlings this summer. The sire’s eight-strong draft includes a colt out of Listed winner Artistic Jewel (135) from Haras de Bourgeauville and a half-brother to Rockfel Stakes scorer Spain Burg (287) from Charles Briere’s Fairway Consignment. Besides Roaring Lion and Cracksman, the most attractive middle-distance performer with debut yearlings is Haras du Logis-based Cloth Of Stars, a son of Sea The Stars who won the Prix Ganay and twice finished placed in the Arc behind Enable. His yearlings are
concentrated on Deauville and Baden-Baden, and the Channel Consignment’s colt who is a half-brother to Grade 1-placed Elektrum (341) at Arqana August is among the standouts. Perhaps one of the biggest talking points among the lots by first-crop sires at the early yearling sales will be the filly by US Triple Crown laureate Justify (52) at Arqana August. Consigned by Ecurie des Monceaux, she is out of Media Mischief, a placed Into Mischief half-sister to Prix de Diane winner Nebraska Tornado. Justify was one of two sons of the late, lamented Scat Daddy who retired to Coolmore’s Ashford Stud in Kentucky in 2019. The other was Mendelssohn, a Grade 1-winning half-brother to champion North American sire Into Mischief and exceptional racemare Beholder. Mendelssohn’s filly out of the Listed-placed Exceed And Excel mare Excelente (119) at Goffs UK Premier will also likely generate lots of interest.

7yo ch g Dream Ahead-Vasilia (Dansili) A stalwart of the sprinting scene for so many years, the high-class son of Dream Ahead finally grabbed a Royal Ascot victory this summer when landing the Group 1 Diamond Jubilee Stakes after an epic tussle with Glen Shiel. The fifth foal out of the high-class producer Vasilia, an unraced Dansili half-sister to Cheveley Park Stakes winner Airwave and Nunthorpe heroine Jwala, the striking chestnut was a 37,000gns purchase by Mick Flanagan as a foal from Tattersalls but was bought back by his vendor, Church View Stables, for £44,000 at the DBS Premier Sale in 2015. The Saeed Suhail-owned gelding has rewarded connections with two wins at the highest level – he also landed last year’s Sprint Cup – amid nine victories in all, along with several placed efforts, and banking more than £945,000 in prize-money. Injury has ruled the seven-year-old out for the remainder of this year but, all being well, he should return for another season at the top in 2022. He will do so off the back of

a richly deserved Diamond Jubilee Stakes success, the horse having been beaten a head in each of the previous two runnings. Connections had decided in 2020 to swerve the July Cup, the thinking being that he is not at his best on Newmarket’s July course, but it would have been extremely interesting to see him have another go having finished down the field in 2019, and of course, as is often the way, they did not get a chance to test him this year due to that setback.
Happy Romance
3yo b f Dandy Man-Rugged Up (Marju) Having already earned more than ten times her sale price of £25,000 when picked up by Peter and Ross Doyle at the 2019 Premier Yearling Sale, Happy Romance has proven a classy performer for her first-time owners, the McMurray family. The daughter of Dandy Man is out of an unraced half-sister to Coolmore Stakes winner Warsaw and Japanese Grade 3 winner Meiner Eternel. Following an easy Sandown victory on her second start, she embellished her juvenile record with successes in valuable sales races at Newbury and York, before landing the Group 3 Dick

Twilight Spinner
Mystery Angel
3yo b f Kodi Bear-Angel Grace (Dark Angel) A remarkable daughter of Kodi Bear – a son of Kodiac who landed the Celebration Mile and finished second in the Dewhurst – the Nick Bradley Racing filly has flourished over middle distances this term, with a second in the Oaks behind Snowfall the standout performance thus far for her shrewd owners and emerging trainer George Boughey. Out of a mile-winning daughter of Dark Angel in Angel Grace, a half-sister to the stakes-performing sprinter Squats and from the family of dual Cesarewitch scorer Aaim To Prosper, Mystery Angel sold to Hyde Park Stud for £13,000 at the Premier Sale before her breeze-up sale the following year at Tattersalls. Third to subsequent Irish Derby runner-up Lone Eagle in last year’s Zetland Stakes, her Pretty Polly Stakes win and Oaks placing this term, along

Rohaan
3yo b g Mayson-Vive Les Rouges (Acclamation) Rohaan’s story is one of genuine rags to riches as, having contested bread-andbutter handicaps at the turn of the year, the son of Mayson has improved beyond all recognition to land a brace of Group races and pick up the Wokingham Handicap at Royal Ascot.
Having failed to sell at the 2018 Goffs November Foal Sale, Rohaan made £36,000 to Oliver St Lawrence at the following year’s Goffs UK Premier Yearling Sale. The gelding made two starts for George Scott before transferring to David Evans, where he has improved to an official rating of 116 from one of just 55 last December, his victory at the royal meeting being preceded by strikes in the Group 3 Pavilion Stakes at Ascot and the Group 2 Sandy Lane Stakes at Haydock. Another star son of the Cheveley Park sire, Rohaan is
3yo b f Twilight Son-Spinatrix (Diktat) One of three black-type winners for Cheveley Park Stud’s promising Twilight Son, Twilight Spinner (right) has already earned back her £30,000 cost at the Premier Yearling Sale courtesy of two wins from three starts. Trained by David O’Meara before selling to Scott Heider, Twilight Spinner was bred by the Knox family and sold to Jason Kelly almost two years ago. Third on her debut and a comfortable winner at Ripon next time out, Twilight Spinner then tore apart a decent field when landing the Listed Cecil Frail Stakes at Haydock by more than six lengths. Out of the stakes-placed Diktat mare Spinatrix, the three-year-old looks an exciting prospect going forward, both on the track for the Joseph O’Brien team and as a broodmare prospect. She
holds entries in the Flying Five and Sprint Cup and could yet prove to be her sire’s flagship runner in the months ahead.
Wakanaka
3yo b f Power-Storyline (Kodiac) A three-time Listed winner as a two-year-old in Italy, Wakanaka has proved an excellent buy by Diego Dettori, who picked up the daughter of Power for just £3,500 at the Goffs UK Silver Yearling Sale. The filly has since produced a careerbest when landing the Group 3 Italian 1,000 Guineas by a comfortable length and a quarter, beating the Group 2 Premio Dormello runner-up Havana Love in good style. Her Oaklands Stud-based sire has enjoyed a spectacular time of things in Europe with two Group 1 winners in Helvic Dream and Laws Of Indices, while this Jean Brennan-bred filly looks set for further blacktype honours in Europe. Wakanaka is the second foal out of the winning Kodiac mare Storyline, who is in turn out of a stakes-placed half-sister to Molecomb Stakes winner Whitbarrow. KITTY TRICE

SUMMER YEARLINGS GOFFS UK
Whatton Manor filly is by one of the hottest Kitty Trice with her pick of 12 yearlings from the catalogue who could grab the limelight in Doncaster Lot 40 b c Dark Angel-Bunditten (Soviet Star) Consigned by Yeomanstown Stud A €70,000 purchase as a foal from Arraghslea Stud at Goffs, this colt is by one of the most prominent and commercial speed sires in Yeomanstown Stud stalwart Dark Angel, who sold here to BBA Ireland for £61,000 in 2006. Out of the stakes-placed Soviet Star mare Bunditten – a half-sister to the dam of Group 3-placed Ficelle Du Houley – he is a half-brother to Coventry Stakes scorer Rajasinghe, now a resident at the National Stud and himself a Premier Yearling Sale graduate when selling to Bobby O’Ryan and Rebel Racing for £85,000 in 2016. The colt can also count the stakes-placed Kurland, a daughter of Kheleyf, among his siblings, while further back in the family is Super Bucks, the
dam of Australian Group 2 winner and Group 1-placed Super Cash.
Lot 57 b c Kodiac-Chatham Islands (Elusive Quality) Consigned by Lynn Lodge Stud Kodiac has sired 18 individual two-year-old winners in Britain and Ireland this season at the time of writing, a statistic that will likely not be lost on buyers at the sale. This colt is out of a winning sister to Prix de Ris-Orangis scorer Time Prisoner and half-sister to the Listed-winning Cherry Hinton runner-up Pearl Grey. The trio’s dam, the Flying Fillies’ Stakes-winning Zelanda, is out of Irish St Leger third Zafadola, also winner of the Oaks Trial at Naas for John Oxx and the dam of Prix des Réservoirs scorer Emily Bronte. Chatham Islands has also produced Group 3 winner Balty Boys as well as multiple scorers Shore Step and Artistic Rifles.
Lot 74 b f Kingman-Daban (Acclamation) Consigned by Whatton Manor Stud By one of the hottest sires
around in Banstead Manor Stud resident Kingman and from a family full of black type, Whatton Manor Stud’s filly certainly catches the eye on the page. She is the second foal out of the high-class Daban, a daughter of Acclamation who won the Nell Gwyn Stakes before finishing an excellent third to Winter in the 1,000 Guineas. Daban is out of the Whipper mare Malaspina, a daughter of Prix Impudence scorer Mahalia and a half-sister to Prix Quincey winner and Critérium International second Johnny Barnes. Further back in the filly’s pedigree are the likes of St James’s Palace Stakes winner Most Improved and Critérium International and Turf Classic winner Ectot.
Lot 88 b f Hot Streak-Diary (Green Desert) Consigned by Trickledown Stud This filly hails from a top-class
family being out of the prolific Diary, a winner in Greece by Green Desert and half-sister to Pretty Polly and Middleton Stakes scorer Ambivalent and Gran Criterium third Al Waffi. Consigned by Trickledown Stud, she is a half-sister to the 2009 European champion three-year-old sprinter Total Gallery, a son of Namid, and two further stakes performers in River Eden Fillies’ Stakes winner Tempest Fugit and Fillies’ Mile runner-up Lady Darshaan, who was also third in the Cherry Hinton Stakes. Ambivalent has done her bit to update the page with two black-type performers in Dubawi colt Al Hilalee, winner of the Group 2 Prix Hocquart, and Teona, a daughter of Sea The Stars who picked up black type when third behind the brilliant Snowfall in the Musidora Stakes. This filly holds plenty of residual value but there should be a lot of interest in her as a performer on the track in the shorter term.

b c Kingman-Earring (Dansili) Consigned by Glenvale Stud Out of a Group 2-placed daughter of Dansili and Queen Elizabeth II Challenge Cup scorer Together, Glenvale Stud’s son of Kingman looks one of the standout lots to head into the Goffs UK ring. The second foal out of the Kilboy Estate Stakes runner-up – a winner for Aidan O’Brien before going on to win and finish Graded-placed for Thomas Proctor in the US – the colt can also count Critérium International winner and Irish Derby third Jan Vermeer (left) on his page, as well as May Hill Stakes scorer Midnight Air, the granddam of Princess of Wales’s Stakes winner Communique, and Prix de l’Abbaye heroine and Cheveley Park Stakes second Imperial Beauty.
b c Invincible Spirit-Edaraat (Rahy) Consigned by Trickledown Stud Next into the ring will be this colt, who comes from a fantastic Shadwell family, being out of a Rahy half-sister to Tanaghum, a daughter of Irish 1,000 Guineas heroine Mehthaaf and the dam of Dubai Group 1 winner Matterhorn, recent York Stakes scorer Bangkok, and Mujarah, the dam of European champion miler and Darley’s first-season sire Ribchester. The third dam is the influential Elle Seule, the dam of dual European champion sprinter Elnadim and the aforementioned Mehthaaf.
Recent York Stakes scorer Bangkok features under the second dam of lot 102

sires around from family full of black type Listed-winning Bahamian Bounty mare Fig Roll and a half-brother to a speedy performer in Prix d’Arenberg scorer Al Raya, a daughter of Siyouni who was placed in a further three five-furlong Listed events. There is plenty of speed going back in the family too, with Fig Roll’s dam, the Acclamation mare Cake, striking at stakes level over five furlongs at two in a busy career for Richard Hannon snr. At a sale where high-class sprint talent is often key, this colt is one who stands out on the page and he should not be short of admirers.
Lot 169 ch c Lope De Vega-Improve (Iffraaj) Consigned by Carisbrooke Stud From a family with a very active page courtesy of the wins this season in the Jersey and Carnarvon Stakes of Creative Force (above right), this colt is out of a winning half-sister to Cheveley Park Stud’s Queen Elizabeth II Stakes heroine Persuasive and Godolphin’s aforementioned speedy Royal Ascot winner.
Improve, who is out of the stakes winner and Group-placed Choisir mare Choose Me, has a filly foal by Frankel at foot and can also count another black-type winner in Tisbutadream, a daughter of Dream Ahead, among her close relations. Further back, the colt has black-type winners such as Hoppegarten Group 2 scorer Bad Bertrich Again and Scottish Classic and Dee Stakes winner Prolix, who was also a close second in the Royal Lodge Stakes, on his page.
Lot 172 b c Awtaad-Interim Payment (Red Ransom) Consigned by The Castlebridge Consignment It has been something of a breakthrough season for Derrinstown Stud’s second-season sire Awtaad, Shadwell’s Irish 2,000 Guineas-winning son of Cape Cross and star producer Asheerah. Two stakes winners in
Bellosa and Primo Bacio were swiftly followed by Create Belief’s wide-margin Royal Ascot win in the Sandringham Stakes. This Castlebridge Consignment-offered colt is another standout on paper, being a half-brother to German Group 1-winning filly Temida, by Oratorio, the dam of another stakes winner in Hoppegarten Group 3 scorer Tabera, a daughter of Gleneagles. Also appearing under the first dam is Beresford Stakes third Power Of Now, while the second dam is American Grade 2 scorer Interim, dam of top-level scorer Midships and the Listed-winning Nassau Stakes third Principal Role. Further back is Cambridgeshire Handicap scorer Intermission, who has produced Prix High-class Premier Sale graduate Illuminate is a sister to lot 291, a colt by the late Zoffany, also sire of Mother Earth

ch c Zoffany-Queen Of Stars (Green Desert) Consigned by Croom House Stud By the late Zoffany, who has been represented this term by the likes of 1,000 Guineas and Prix Rothschild heroine Mother Earth, this colt has all the credentials to be a top-class prospect on the track. He is out of the unraced Green Desert mare Queen Of Stars and is therefore a brother to the high-class Illuminate, a graduate of this sale when making £95,000 to Peter and Ross Doyle from Croom House Stud. She went on to win the Duchess of Cambridge and Albany Stakes, as well as finishing second in the Cheveley Park Stakes, for Denford Stud. Queen Of Stars is out of a stakes winner, the Machiavellian mare Queen Catherine, and is also a half-sister to Premio Dormello
br c Roaring Lion-Rich Legacy (Holy Roman Emperor) Consigned by Hillwood Stud Another by a greatly missed sire in Roaring Lion, whose sole crop is going through the yearling sales this year. This colt, consigned by Hillwood Stud, comes from a family which has plenty of black type – his dam, the Holy Roman Emperor mare Rich Legacy, won the May Hill Stakes for Ralph Beckett and Qatar Racing, and was also fourth in the Fillies’ Mile and Ribblesdale. Rich Legacy is a granddaughter of the top-class Britannia, winner of the German St Leger and the dam of five winners including Coronation Cup and German Derby scorer Boreal and Borgia, likewise winner of the German Derby – more notably still given she was a filly – and the Grosser Preis von Baden. Borgia also proved her worth in the paddocks, producing German Group 3 scorer Bermuda Reef and as the
b c Footstepsinthesand-Tarfshi (Mtoto) Consigned by Jamie Railton Sales Agency There is plenty of depth in this colt’s pedigree. The son of Footstepsinthesand is the 13th foal out of the Pretty Polly Stakes winner Tarfshi, a daughter of Mtoto who proved a consistently high-class performer for Michael Jarvis and Sheikh Ahmed Al Maktoum. Tarfshi, a daughter of Cheveley Park Stakes winner and champion Irish juvenile filly Pass The Peace, is a half-sister to another Cheveley Park winner in Embassy and Puck’s Castle, the third dam of Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf runner-up and Poule d’Essai des Pouliches third East. Tarfshi has also produced the stakes-placed Iffraaj filly Tazffin and Week End, an unraced daughter of Selkirk and the dam of John of Gaunt Stakes winner Absolutely So, and the venerable mare can boast three winners from five runners to have made the track.

SUMMER YEARLINGS GOFFS UK BUMBLE MITCHELL The leading consignor speaks to Martin Stevens
N
O ONE should need reminding of Bumble Mitchell’s expertise at rearing young stock and preparing them for the sales, but this year’s Diamond Jubilee Stakes hero Dream Of Dreams and Pretty Polly Stakes third Cayenne Pepper have delivered yet more proof of her prowess. However, the result that has brought the Lincolnshire-based breeder and consignor most satisfaction in recent weeks is the emergence of homebred Khunan as one of the best two-year-old sprinters around. The Twilight Son colt, sold to Robin O’Ryan and Richard Fahey for just £18,000 at last year’s Goffs UK Premier Yearling Sale, scored in a Ripon novice stakes in April and split subsequent Group 2 winners Angel Bleu and Lusail when second in a Pontefract conditions stakes in May. He ran a respectable sixth in
Khunan has special place in affections the Norfolk Stakes at Royal Ascot in June and found only Asymmetric too good in the Richmond Stakes at Glorious Goodwood last month. The reason for Khunan being the apple of Mitchell’s eye is he hails from her signature family. His dam Hilary J, a winning half-sister to Flying Five Stakes scorer Dutch Masterpiece, is out of dual winner The Terrier; in turn, The Terrier was a great-granddaughter of Tuxford Hideaway, who produced the prolific sprinting star Branston Abby. “I don’t like blowing my own trumpet but I don’t mind boasting about this family,” says Mitchell. “Hilary J is the second daughter of The Terrier
whose first foal has got black type, after Miss Bunter, whose daughter Alwasmiya won the Bosra Sham Fillies’ Stakes. “We have four of The Terrier’s daughters here, and it’s only those two who have foals of racing age. The third one, Image, was the highest rated of them all and she has the most gorgeous Dandy Man colt who’s going to Tattersalls October Book 2. “The fourth is Heartstring, a five-year-old by Slade Power. She showed little on track but she had an injury, and I know she was better than she was capable of showing. Slade Power isn’t the hottest kid on the block, but being by Dutch Art it makes his daughters very interesting to mate, and we
can bring in Danzig-line stallions with her.” Bumble Bloodstock’s three-strong draft at this year’s Goffs UK Premier Yearling Sale does not contain any of The Terrier’s clan, but it does boast another good-looking colt by Cheveley Park Stud’s upwardly mobile young sire Twilight Son. Lot 123 is the first foal out of Fascinator, a placed Helmet half-sister to Dubai Bounty, the dam of Molecomb Stakes winner and Commonwealth Cup runner-up Kachy – who was, of course, by Twilight Son’s sire Kyllachy. Further back it is the family of stakes-winning siblings Auria, Beat The Bank and Chil Chil. “He’s a really gorgeous colt,
‘I don’t like blowing my own trumpet but I don’t mind boasting about this family’ Bumble Mitchell, who bred and consigned Khunan
and I wouldn’t say so if he wasn’t!” says Mitchell. “Luckily the dam seems to be breeding belting foals. She produced a Cable Bay filly this year and she’s smashing-looking as well. “I’m pleased to see Twilight Son doing well, and I think his results are only going to get better. Having used
Kyllachy and Pivotal successfully in the past, it’s good to have another stallion from that line.” Mitchell also takes to the Premier sale a Territories colt out of Rock Ace (305), a dual-winning Verglas half-sister to Laddies Poker Too, the Wokingham Handicap scorer who found

further fame as the dam of brilliant racemare Winter. “He’s more of a finer type,” says Mitchell of the half-brother to winners Havana Dawn and Sing Something. “Territories is doing really well, with a very high winners-to-runners strike-rate and average progeny RPR. His daughter
Rougir looked unlucky in the Prix Rothschild. “Luckily, I bought the dam before Winter emerged in the pedigree. I’d been following her for a while as she was a very quick two-year-old for Debbie Sanderson and she goes back to a family I love. Her third dam was the Prix Morny winner Ancient
Regime, and I always thought the pedigree would come back.” Completing the Bumble Bloodstock trio at the Premier sale is none other than a closely related sibling to a winner at Royal Ascot this year – a Dutch Art three-parts brother to Significantly (308), who took the Palace of
Holyroodhouse Handicap before following up in another valuable handicap back at the course last month. “I’m delighted to be consigning a three-parts brother to a Royal Ascot winner,” says Mitchell. “His pedigree reads very well, with Dutch Art also being back in the headlines thanks to
Starman winning the July Cup.” Bumble Bloodstock is represented by just one yearling in the Goffs UK Silver Sale, but the colt in question has been the subject of an important catalogue update in the run-up to the auction. Lot 411 is a Mukhadram half-brother to Le Beau
Garcon, a two-year-old son of Brazen Beau who scored by clear water on his second start for Mick and David Easterby in a five-furlong Beverley novice stakes late last month. “He showed good early speed to get across from his wide draw and had plenty in reserve to put his seal on the race,” noted the Racing Post analysis of the winner. “The Mukhadram is a neat, well-made colt being consigned for a client, Susan Field, who has enjoyed so much success with this family,” says Mitchell. “The dam, Bacall, is one of nine stakes winners out of Susan’s very good mare Xtrasensory.” The consignor has the goods for Goffs UK, now all that is needed is a bustling buying bench. She is cautiously optimistic on that front. “I’ve spoken to a few big agents, and I’m told there’s money out there at the moment,” she says. “Apparently a lot of clients haven’t been able to spend their money on holidays, so they’ve decided, what the hell, let’s just have some fun.” If the winner-packed pedigrees of the Bumble Bloodstock offerings are anything to go by, there should certainly be plenty of fun to be had with them.

SUMMER YEARLINGS INTERVIEW
‘The sales inspectors haven’t had to go looking for that extra inch when they’ve gone to see them. They also have great movement’
I
F THE enthusiasm of Richard Kent could be bottled up and spread across the industry, then the bloodstock business would most likely be a much better place. In the 16 years that he has been at the helm of Mickley Stud, near Market Drayton, Shropshire, with partner Clare Lloyd, Kent has remained a true ally of the smaller breeder while producing plenty of winners of his own and maintaining a select stallion roster. For much of that period the roster had a dual-purpose look to it, its make-up partly a reflection of the enjoyment that Kent, a former long-standing vice-chairman of the TBA National Hunt Committee, receives out of the jumps game. At the same time, various smart Flat runners, quite often sprinters, have held court in the stallion yard, most notably the likes of Needwood Blade, Captain Gerrard, Multiplex and Heeraat. None cost breeders the earth to use but each produced plenty of
Massaat, whose first crop are yearlings of 2021, in his racecourse pomp winning the Group 2 Hungerford Stakes
RICHARD KENT Nancy Sexton talks to the owner of Mickley Stud about its latest stallion recruit, Massaat, whose first yearlings are up for sale winners and in some instances provided their supporters with some terrific commercial returns; for instance, both Multiplex and Heeraat were represented in the sale ring by six-figure yearlings. With all due respect to the above quartet, however, no horse up until now has possessed a better profile than Massaat, the newest Mickley horse to come under scrutiny. Stood in partnership with Shadwell Estates, Massaat was a Group 1 performer at two, when he ran second to Air Force Blue in the Dewhurst Stakes having broken his maiden at Leicester, and a Classic performer at three, when second to Galileo Gold in the 2,000 Guineas. He went on to gain a deserved Pattern-race success the following year in the
Hungerford Stakes and bowed out with placings in the Prix du Moulin and Challenge Stakes. That Group 1 race record is supported by a strong background that features Teofilo as his sire and Shadwell’s high-flying mare Madany as his dam. A daughter of popular commercial influence Acclamation, the winning Madany is also dam of the Commonwealth Cup winner Eqtidaar and last year’s Horris Hill Stakes scorer Mujbar. As Kent outlines, it is a family that was “very close to Sheikh Hamdan’s heart”. No wonder, then, that Kent is looking forward to unleashing a sextet of Massaat yearlings upon buyers at the Goffs UK Premier Sale in Doncaster. Another five from the farm are scheduled to head to the Goffs UK Silver Sale,
while colts are also catalogued to the Tattersalls Somerville and Tattersalls Ireland September Yearling Sales.
A
S ANYONE who has seen Massaat in the flesh will testify, he is a good-sized horse with a good temperament, both qualities that he is now passing down to his stock. “They’re all good-sized horses,” says Kent. “The sales inspectors haven’t had to go looking for that extra inch when they’ve gone to see them. They also have great movement to them.
“But, most importantly of all, they all have fantastic temperaments, which is so important in this day and age with the difficulties for some yards in getting staff. We’re seeing the same happen right now with Ardad – they’ve all got very good minds, which is so helpful today when it comes to training them. “When it’s about speed, it’s all about temperament too and the Massaat horses are very easy minded. It’s good to know that you can send a lunatic to him and he’ll sober it up!” Mickley’s draft opens with a Massaat colt in possession of a very live pedigree as a relation
to Ger Lyon’s unbeaten Anglesey Stakes winner Beauty Inspire. Catalogued as lot 53, he is out of Beauty Inspire’s granddam Ceedwell, a dual winner at two who ran third in the Queen Mary Stakes at Royal Ascot. He is followed by lot 85, a filly out of the Listed-winning two-year-old Delizia, whose first foal is this season’s smart filly Fabiosa, and then by lot 112, a half-sister to the Listed-placed Deauville Shower. Massaat is also represented within the draft by lots 158 and 212, two colts from fast families, and by lot 396, a filly

LIBERTY BEACH Multiple Gr1 placed Gr2 Temple Stakes Gr3 Molecomb Stakes L Dragon Stakes L Cecil Frail Stakes out of Listed winner What’s Up Pussycat. “Ceedwell won her novice and then ran third in the Queen May ten days afterwards, so she must have been a tough filly, fast too,” says Kent. “The Delizia filly is from a sharp family, she’s a great-moving filly and she has some height to her – some of the family can be a bit small.” WH Bloodstock will also send through a Massaat colt from the family of Mehmas as lot 49. Mickley’s Massaat sextet take centre stage within an 11-strong Premier draft for the stud that also includes first-crop yearlings by Harry Angel, Havana Grey, Tasleet and Washington DC in addition to a colt by the ever-popular Holy Roman Emperor. Of particular satisfaction is the filly by Havana Grey out of Radio Gaga (293). Bred in partnership with Charles
Lonsdale, the filly is from the first crop of a top-notch sprinter who was bred at Mickley with the late Lady Lonsdale and out of the Mickley homebred Radio Gaga, by Multiplex. Enthusiastic and knowledgeable, Lady Lonsdale took tremendous pride in the achievements of Havana Grey and is also listed as the co-breeder of Fabiosa. “It’s a great story, having bred the sire and the dam,” says Kent. “Lady Lonsdale was a wonderful woman and a clever breeder. We have a couple of Havana Greys and they’ve all got very good minds on them. The filly out of Radio Gaga is gorgeous, a great mover, and Lady Lonsdale would be very proud.” With 72 yearlings on the stud, the Premier Sale marks the start of a busy, and hopefully productive, time for the operation. Not all, however, will head through the ring, while Kent isn’t

hesitant to race any filly who doesn’t meet her market value. “For the smaller people, it has become harder for them to fight their corner and in the past if you got a filly, you’d have a long face,” he says. “But now with the Great British Bonus Scheme, you know you can put her into training and have a chance of getting something back. “The scheme has been a massive help – it’s the best thing that has happened in British breeding for ten years. It’s an easy sell to get people interested and we’ll be putting syndicates together to race a few.”
K
ENT (left) has good reason to trumpet the worth of the GBB Scheme given he has been associated with several winners already, one of whom, Fabiosa, was eligible for the full £20,000 payout. Daughter Nell, 11, also recently landed her share of a £20,000 bonus courtesy of Legendary Grace, a Multiplex mare she co-bred out of Fairyinthewind who won over hurdles at Worcester recently. It must be short odds that another potential bonus winner is lurking within this year’s group of Mickley-raised yearlings – and, who knows, perhaps some of them will be winning representatives of Massaat.

5yo b m Soldier Hollow-Achinora (Sleeping Indian) Axana delivered conclusive proof that German breeding isn’t just about stamina when defeating a decent field of British, Irish and French-breds to take the Chartwell Fillies’ Stakes at Lingfield in May. The high-class mare, out of a winning daughter of Sleeping Indian and Beverly D Stakes runner-up Via Borghese, was a vendor buyback at just €15,000 at the BBAG Yearling Sale of 2017. Axana was consequently trained by Jens Hirschberger for breeder Sergej Penner at two, when she won a Listed contest at Hanover in impressive fashion. At the end of the season she was sold at the Arqana December Breeding-Stock Sale to Team Valor for €300,000. Team Valor sent the filly to Andreas Wöhler at three, and she improved to win two German Group 3s and to run second in the country’s 1,000 Guineas. She was a little below par last year but came back to her best in 2021, with Cayton Park Stud now on board.

Listed Australia Day Cup at Warwick Farm. Skymax is by Maxios, better known as an in-demand jumps stallion at Castle Hyde Stud these days but evidently still able to supply useful middle-distance winners and stayers on the Flat. Mount Popa, another Listed scorer in Australia this year, and Walderbe, runner-up to Subjectivist in the Dubai Gold Cup in March, also attest to that. There is only one chance to buy a Maxios yearling at Baden-Baden next month, in the shape of Gestüt Hofgut Heymann’s filly out of Alaska, a twice successful half-sister to Listed winner Adolfina (8).

Gestüt Röttgen relinquish its Kingman colt out of Listed winner Weltmacht, a half-sister to its top-class filly Wild Coco, at the BBAG Yearling Sale two years ago. Wirko, as he was already named by his breeder, is trained by Charlie Appleby and has shown in his four starts he is worthy of carrying the storied royal blue silks of Sheikh Mohammed’s operation. He stormed to a four-and-aquarter-length success in a Kempton novice stakes on his second run last term, and charged home to win the Listed Blue Riband Trial at Epsom on his debut this season. Wirko was a little disappointing when fourth in the Chester Vase on his last start, and has since been gelded. He looks the type who could develop into a smart sort at the Dubai Carnival and in other international contests. There are no Kingman yearlings available to buy at Baden-Baden next month but Röttgen is set to present a Reliable Man half-sister to Wirko (55). UP TO AUGUST 1

KUROSHIO #SpeedSire
Last year’s German Oaks winner, Sea The Stars filly Miss Yoda (left), is a full-sister to lot 192
. . . and lots who could light up ring this year Lot 43 b f Lope De Vega-Quaduna (Duke Of Marmalade) Consigned by Gestüt Fährhof History shows that you disregard a Lope De Vega yearling presented at BBAG at your peril. Talented runners by the brilliant sire who previously went through the ring at Baden-Baden include Killavullan Stakes winner and Irish 2,000 Guineas third Blue De Vega (bought for €32,000), Group 2 victress Kalifornia Queen (€70,000), valuable BBAG sales race scorer Ramazotti (not sold at €38,000), useful handicapper Treasury Notes (€28,000) and the Group-placed pair Elegant Supermodel (€13,000) and El Loco (€16,000). Those graduates were knocked down for reasonable prices but it will likely cost more to take home the only lot in this year’s BBAG Yearling Sale catalogue, a half-sister to this year’s dual French winner Quello out of Group 3 scorer Quaduna.
Lot 54 br f Sea The Stars-Wellenspiel (Sternkonig) Consigned by Gestüt Röttgen Progeny of Sea The Stars often prove wildly popular at the BBAG Yearling Sale. Indeed, it is two fillies by the brilliant champion who have the honour of commanding the auction’s joint-record price of €820,000. Sea The Stars is represented by five lots this year and many have mouthwatering pedigrees, including the filly out of Prix Marcel Boussac second Topaze Blanche (50) offered by Ronald Rauscher and the full-sister to German Oaks heroine Miss Yoda (192) consigned by Gestüt Etzean. The pick of them all, though, must be this filly out of Gestüt Röttgen’s ace broodmare Wellenspiel, whose first two foals, Windstoss and Weltstar, won the Derby. If she has the looks to match her pedigree,
the only question will be whether her price soars high enough for the stud to part with such a precious commodity; it has bought back the last three yearlings out of the mare who were presented at BBAG.
Lot 60 b c Siyouni-Akua’Da (Shamardal) Consigned by Gestüt Brümmerhof Gestüt Brümmerhof is one of the more commercially minded breeders and consignors in Germany and it brings to the market a colt with a pedigree sure to pique the interest of buyers at home and abroad. He is the only lot in the catalogue by Siyouni, on the mark with this year’s Poule d’Essai des Poulains, Prix du Jockey Club and Coral-Eclipse hero St Mark’s Basilica, and he is out of German 1,000 Guineas winner Akua’Da. The icing on the cake is the fact that Akua’Da is by the increasingly important broodmare sire Shamardal. The Siyouni-Shamardal cross has already produced stakes winners Tertius and Walk In Marrakesh and Prix Marcel Boussac runner-up Marieta.
Lot 67 ch c Frankel-Calyxa (Pivotal) Consigned by Gestüt Haus Ittlingen Frankel fever is at an all-time high in the bloodstock industry, with the dual world champion leading the British and Irish sire standings this season thanks to Derby heroes Adayar and Hurricane Lane and fellow Group 1 winner Snow Lantern. Gestüt Haus Ittlingen offers two colts by the sire who are closely related to each other at BBAG – a half-brother to Group 3 winner and three-time Group 1 third Calyxa (176) and a colt out of Calyxa herself. The colt out of Calyxa is of particular interest as Calyxa is by Pivotal, and so he is bred on the same cross as top-flight winners Cracksman, Hungry Heart and Veracious.
Lot 149 b c Adlerflug-Pop Chart (Dubawi) Consigned by Gestüt Ohlerweiherhof It was a great shame that Adlerflug died aged 17 in April, months after he had enjoyed his best ever season – siring the German Derby one-two In Swoop and Torquator Tasso, with the winner going on to finish second in the Arc and the runner-up subsequently striking in the Grosser Preis von Berlin. He had been crowned German champion sire for the first time. There can be no excuse for ignorance of Adlerflug’s talents outside of Germany now, especially since his son Alenquer has won the Sandown Classic Trial and King Edward VII Stakes for William Haggas this season. There are six yearlings by Adlerflug on offer at BBAG including this colt out of Pop Chart, a winning daughter of Dubawi and Group 1 heroine Baila Me. Dubawi has come to the fore this year as the damsire of Adayar, who won the Derby and King George but only after finding Alenquer too good in his Epsom prep at Sandown.
Lot 180 b f Soldier Hollow-Divya (Platini) Consigned by Gestüt Park Wiedingen Here’s a real collector’s item: a Soldier Hollow filly out of the winning Platini mare Divya, whose first five runners – every one of them by Soldier Hollow – are all black-type performers. Best of the quintet are German champion Dschingis Secret, winner of the Grosser Preis von Berlin and a close third in the German Derby, and Destino, a Group 3 scorer and beaten a neck into second by Weltstar in the German Derby. Divya’s latest BBAG offering won’t come cheap. Her three yearlings through the ring sold for €500,000, €200,000 and €120,000. MARTIN STEVENS

SUMMER YEARLINGS BBAG
Streamlined operation continuing to punch its weight on world stage ANDREAS JACOBS
Revamped account GESTÜT FÄHRHOF is appealing to an international audience by relaunching its Twitter account. “We have the largest account of any thoroughbred organisation in Germany with more than 40,000 followers,” says Andreas Jacobs (above left). “But we realised that the English-speaking world is not all on Facebook, and thought we had to do something to broaden our reach.” There are big plans for the account, with the handle @gestutfahrhof, to go above and beyond what most studs offer. Jacobs says: “It’s not just going to be boring race results and foal pictures, we’re going to launch it with images and videos of how we prepare the yearlings. We have great staff who love working with the horses and we want to show that off to the world.”
The owner of Gestüt Fährhof speaks to Martin Stevens
T
HE Jacobs family might have sold Newsells Park Stud but they remain one of the biggest players on the European bloodstock scene through their ownership of leading German nursery Gestüt Fährhof. “This is the wellspring of our family’s breeding operation,” says Andreas Jacobs of the storied operation near Bremen, which has bred and raced legends such as Surumu, Acatenango and Lomitas. “My grandfather Walther founded it in 1960, my father Klaus bought Newsells Park in 2000 and I myself started Maine Chance Farms in South Africa in 2001. But this is the source of it all, where it all began.” Gestüt Fährhof’s status as a premier-league breeder is reflected in its draft at this year’s BBAG Yearling Sale, which comprises 13 lots by blue-chip international sires, most hailing from long-nurtured families. Highlights include the Lope De Vega filly out of dual Group 3 winner Quaduna (lot 43), the Showcasing colt out of Listed scorer Sequilla (47) and the Iffraaj colt out of Preis der Diana third Amona (62). This is the stud’s first yearling draft that is the result of it downsizing its herd in 2019, in order to remove mares who had been bought solely to support stallions and to prune over-represented families. “The broodmares have been streamlined, and we’re no longer selling horses by the stallions we were standing, Maxios and Helmet,” says Jacobs. “This crop is the result of matings that were made purely on what suited the mares the best, and not because we needed to use a stallion who was sitting at home waiting for mares.” He adds the beauty of German breeding is that the country’s rule that foals must be named with the same initial letter as their dam creates a thread of quality that runs through history. “With our naming system, people can trace back families that have been nurtured by Gestüt Fährhof and other similar owner-breeders over
several generations,” he says. “We’ve observed each family’s qualities and traits and mated them sensitively for many decades. We know those bloodlines inside out. “I think this sets German breeding apart from other countries, and gives us a unique selling point. In Britain and Ireland there is, unfortunately, so much commercial breeding, and a consignor might not even know anything about the dams and families of their lots.” The Lope De Vega filly out of Quaduna, for example, hails from a family that has been in Gestüt Fährhof ownership since her granddam Quelle Amore was bought as a yearling from breeder Gestüt Park Wiedingen for €170,000 at Baden-Baden in 2004. Quelle Amore’s dam Qelle Amie, a Listed-winning Beau Genius half-sister to German 1,000 Guineas and Oaks heroine Que Belle, had in turn been purchased by Gestüt Park Wiedingen as a yearling at Tattersalls in 1997. “The family is now more prevalent in Japan, as I sold Quelle Amore to Katsumi Yoshida for 300,000gns in 2010,” says Jacobs. “It has always produced good-looking stock and in fact just last weekend I was going around the stud with my business partner, the former footballer Klaus Allofs, and I used the Lope De Vega filly to demonstrate the perfect triangle that Monty Roberts taught me, in terms of how deep the shoulders and hindquarters should be in
relation to the rest of the conformation. “She is just an outstanding physical; with a Lope De Vega face perhaps, but otherwise an absolute beauty. She’s a future Oaks winner!” Gestüt Fährhof has another productive ‘Q’ family, that going back to Quebrada, a Devil’s Bag mare bought from breeder Barronstown Stud as a yearling in 1991 who became champion at two and three in Germany. She became the dam of stakes winners Quilanga, Quinindo and Quixote, and granddam of champions Quasillo and Querari plus the high-class pair Quidura and Sharja Bridge through her Listed-winning daughter Quetena. Lot 152 at BBAG is an Oasis Dream colt out of Queimada, an unraced Dansili half-sister to Querari (who is also by Oasis Dream) and siblings. “Quebrada was a fantastic blue hen for us and produced so many fantastic horses, not just at home but internationally,” says Jacobs, “Sharja Bridge achieved a very high rating in Britain and Querari is a champion sire in South Africa.” That ‘Q’ family will also be represented in Gestüt Fährhof’s draft at the Tattersalls October Yearling Sales, with a colt from the penultimate crop of Shamardal out of Quariana, an unraced daughter of Lomitas and Quebrada, due to sell in Book 1. Another renowned German line that the stud gained access to is the ‘G’ family that goes
back to Grimpola, the German 1,000 Guineas winner bought by Leslie Harrison for Lord Howard de Walden’s Plantation Stud in the mid-1980s. Group 1 winners Fame And Glory, Farhh, Glen Shiel and Legatissimo all descend from the daughter of Windwurf. Gestüt Fährhof’s draft at BBAG includes a Nathaniel colt out of Guavia (77), a Listed-placed daughter of Invincible Spirit and Group 3 winner Goathemala, whose third dam is Grimpola. “This is a great family that gave Lord Howard de Walden a lot of success and now Godolphin is doing well with it,” says Jacobs. “Farhh was an excellent horse and has been very good at stud, despite having smaller numbers, and I believe we will consign the only yearling by him at Book 1 this year – a half-brother to Group 2-placed Palavecino out of the Galileo mare Saltita.”
H
OWEVER, the signature Gestüt Fährhof family must surely be the ‘L’ clan of champions La Colorada, Lagunas, Lavirco, Lirung and Lomitas. A colt from this wonderful dynasty is headed to Baden-Baden: the half-brother to Group 3 winner La Saldana by Lord Of England (24), sire of recent wide-margin Preis der Diana heroine Palmas. Another Gestüt Fährhof ‘L’ yearling offering could prove to be one of the headline-makers at Book 1: a colt out of La Saldana by none

other than US Triple Crown hero Justify. “This has always been a family of brilliance, and it’s not just stout German stamina – it’s very versatile,” says Jacobs. “Lomitas was just outstanding on an international level, and of course he sired a brilliant Arc winner in Danedream at stud.” Jacobs has full confidence in the stud’s draft for BBAG and he is equally as bullish about the potential strength of trade in Baden-Baden on September 3. “I think the catalogue reads a lot better than last year, because breeders in Germany are having to sell due to two elements – the effects of Covid-19 and the fact that prize-money is dependent on betting turnover, which is well down,” he says. “So they are putting some very interesting fillies on the market, including five by Sea The Stars, one of them the full-sister to Miss Yoda, as well as our own daughter of Lope De Vega. It’s hard to find that sort of quality at any sale in Europe, and it makes Baden-Baden very attractive to buyers this year.” But will those German breeders, most of whom are also leading owners, be prepared to relinquish their best-bred yearlings? In the past they have often taken them home, to the frustration of some visitors. “You have to remember that 20 years ago this country had no commercial sellers, they were all owner-breeders, and the transition from owner-breeder to commercial is not an overnight process,” explains Jacobs. “They have had to adjust their own hearts and minds, and those of their family and staff, from keeping homebreds to selling them;
and, moreover, selling the good ones. “German breeders have always sold colts, even if they were a little under-prepared – though it was the duty of agents to look beyond that. They did often keep the best fillies, but I expect that to change this year. It will be the first time that buyers at BBAG will find those super well-bred fillies are for sale, even though they may not be cheap.”
J
ACOBS does not foresee Covid-19 holding back buyers, and is relatively relaxed about the pandemic’s future effect on the market. What is causing him a headache as a breeder at the moment, though, are the bureaucratic and financial effects of Brexit. “It’s been a disaster for us,” he says. “Gestüt Fährhof had 33 mares in foal this year and 29 of those were covered in Britain and Ireland, so you can imagine what sort of hassle it caused. The extra admin that it required was insane, and it put a lot of money on to the cost of sending mares abroad to be covered. “I’ve heard other breeders say this will be the last year they go through it, and plans are being put together to attract new stallions to Germany. There is an understanding that with Brexit and Covid-19 they need to invest in the stallion scene at home.” That might make grim reading for British and Irish stallion studs, but at least Jacobs is set to persevere in using the best available on these shores instead of deviating from his breeding masterplan. “Now that we have cut the bottom half of our broodmare band, the idea is to continue sending those top mares to the most appealing stallions in the world,” he says. “We’re by far the biggest German investor in British and Irish stallions, you need only to look in the BBAG catalogue to see that.” Indeed, besides those yearlings in the Gestüt Fährhof draft already mentioned, there are also fillies by Ruler Of The World (87), Nathaniel (93), Holy Roman Emperor (100) and Teofilo (183), and colts by Starspangledbanner (160), Holy Roman Emperor (195) and Lawman (200). The point is underlined at Tattersalls in October, when the stud offers a Kingman filly out of Group 3 winner Hargeisa in addition to the colts by Justify, Shamardal and Farhh in Book 1, as well as well-bred sons of Camelot and Dark Angel in Book 2.

SUMMER YEARLINGS ARQANA
Build it and they will come JOSÉ DELMOTTE The man behind Haras d'Haspel talks to Scott Burton
J
OSÉ DELMOTTE and his daughter Sandra have built the Haras d’Haspel from the ground up, ploughing love and knowhow – as well as no small amount of money – into a stud which has begun to hit the headlines on a regular basis. The farm was a hunting lodge beloved by the mayors of Paris – future president of France Jacques Chirac was a frequent visitor – while the man who has turned it into a hugely respected breeding operation left school at 15 to forge a career in property and construction. José Delmotte and the Haras d’Haspel have grown together in the matter of raising thoroughbreds. Conceived 15 years ago as a small passion project in a corner of the Orne valley which revolved around three or four of his former racemares, Haspel long ago stopped being a diversion from Delmotte’s principal business interests in Paris. With a draft of yearlings heading to Arqana’s August sale by front-rank stallions such as Kingman, Siyouni and Zoustar, it’s clear that this is now his main concern. On the track, 2021 has been a fine advertisement for Haspel, with Native Trail succeeding Quorto and Master Of The Seas on the Superlative Stakes roll of honour for Charlie Appleby. Delmotte also bought this year’s Poule d’Essai des Pouliches heroine
Coeursamba as a foal and presented her in top condition at the 2018 August sale, catching Jean-Claude Rouget’s keen eye. Having promised himself that when he became tired of building he would turn his hand to breeding, Delmotte discovered what was to become the Haras d’Haspel 15 years ago. “I found it because my company was involved in rebuilding a nearby flood defence that had burst,” says Delmotte, sitting in a well appointed lounge which still has a few trophies mounted on the wall as a reminder of the leisure pursuits of yesterday’s men. “I thought it was charming – though there was nothing useful here, not one metre of paddock fencing – and little by little I’ve bought more and more of the adjoining land, to the point where we have 280 hectares today.” After what he describes as the learning phase – conducted with modest mares and the boss absent on business in Paris most of the week – the arrival of some key personnel and a renewed focus from Delmotte himself led to the step change that you see when you roll up to the front gate today. Sandra joined the enterprise, bringing considerable experience from the showjumping world, as well as a husband who is a key day-to-day presence with the mares and yearlings. And Delmotte found an agent who suited his temperament down to the ground in Marc-Antoine Berghgracht. There is a lot riding on their collective shoulders since Delmotte has only two boarding clients and never more than four boarding mares (though it should be
noted that one of those is none other than Teruya Yoshida, and his Tokyo Gold – this year’s Italian Derby winner and Belmont Derby Invitational runner-up – was raised at Haspel). Their record of selecting well-related mares just before important family updates bears close scrutiny, and Delmotte says it all boils down to the fact that each can disagree with the other without fear of falling out. “Marc-Antoine and I have become good friends,” says Delmotte. “It hadn’t really
worked with a few others previously but I found we could speak honestly with each other. If I had a horse he thought was no good, he would say so. He would tell me it was folly to keep them and ‘you’re just wasting money’. “Little by little we began to produce some nicer horses and I felt we needed to go up a level, because it’s very hard at that lower grade. It was fine while it was just a passion rather than a career, but once you view it as a business you have to do things properly.” The mares on the Haspel
books show some very shrewd judgement at the right time.

HE Oasis Dream mare Tarentaise was purchased from the Juddmonte selection at the 2016 Tattersalls July sale. Thirteen months later her first son Equilateral burst on to the scene, and has gone on to win a Meydan Group 2 and found only Battaash too hot in the 2020 King’s Stand. November 2019. A €105,000 price tag for the daughter of Kodiac was undoubtedly a reflection on the performances of her 2,000 Guineas-winning half-brother Magna Grecia, though what she would have made had the world known then what it does now about her soon-to-turn two-year-old sibling St Mark’s Basilica, who knows? “She has a beautiful filly foal by Sea The Stars and is carrying to Siyouni [sire of St Mark’s Basilica],” says Delmotte. And then there is Needleleaf, another Tattersalls/Juddmonte project from a family well known in France thanks to the exploits of her Criquette Head-trained sisters African Rose and Helleborine. Her first foal by Oasis Dream is the aforementioned Native Trail, as good a calling card as Delmotte could wish for ahead of his Kingman half-sister’s appearance in the Arqana ring on Saturday. Both José and Sandra speak in forthright tones throughout the visit but the register drops to an awed whisper when the subject of the filly comes up, more so when we go down to the yearling barns to see her parade. “Frankly, I think we have a really good draft this year and I will be extremely disappointed if they don’t sell well," says José. “We have a Kingman

José Delmotte (holding Koala, a Kodiac half-sister to St Mark’s Basilica and Magna Grecia) with his daughter Sandra; clockwise from top left: the Arqana-bound Kingman half-sister to Native Trail, Zoustar colt, and daughters of Muhaarar and Profitable
sister to Native Trail [lot 62], who just won a Group 2 in Britain. She is something out of the ordinary." Sandra agrees, saying: “She ticks every single box. It’s rare for that to happen, but she has everything.” Her dad adds: “She will stop people in their tracks. I’ve never had a nicer filly than her.”
It is hard to disagree and, if ever a yearling looked ready to face endless hours of inspections and then her moment on the catwalk, this laid-back lady is surely the one. None of her Haspel teammates lack anything in terms of the same excellent presentation, while the stallions they represent show
Godolphin’s unbeaten Superlative Stakes winner Native Trail is a half-brother to lot 62, a filly by Kingman from Haras d'Haspel
the investment that Delmotte continues to put into his best stock. Colts by Zoustar (224) and Territories (338) are accompanied by fillies by Siyouni (331) and Profitable (302), the only representative of the Kildangan resident catalogued across the four days. And Haspel will also have a
Muhaarar filly (434) – the first produce from an unraced Galileo mare – in the V2 section on day four of the sale. Haras d’Haspel has come a long way since Delmotte turned his full attention to breeding racehorses, and where there was previously none there are now 60km of paddock rails. He laughs at the
risks involved compared to his former business ventures. “Say you send a mare to Siyouni every year, you'll have spent €360,000 before there’s any chance of getting something back,” he says. “I try to be very rational about things. I come from a real estate background and these are investments. In that line of
work you’d take out €1 billion worth of insurance against whatever might happen. “With this, your €150,000 could vanish in a puff of smoke. It’s completely irrational.” It is indeed a pursuit that has tamed kings and princes. But José and Sandra Delmotte continue to play the odds as successfully as anyone.
Sottsass and Wonderful Tonight head a stellar cast Six leading graduates from the Arqana August Yearling Sale Gold Trip
4yo b c Outstrip-Sarvana (Dubai Destination) Picked up for €60,000 by Gérard Larrieu from Grandcamp in 2018, the son of Outstrip has proved a consistent and tough performer for Ecurie Jean-Louis Bouchard. Having lost his maiden tag in the Group 2 Prix Greffulhe last year – in which subsequent German Derby winner and Arc second In Swoop was third – the Fabrice Chappet-trained colt has added three Group 1 placings to his name. Most recently a staying-on third behind Broome in the Grand Prix de Saint-Cloud, Gold Trip was bred by Maxime Monfort and is the second foal out of Sarvana, a Dubai Destination half-sister to Sarlisa, a winner and dam of Prix Jean Romanet runner-up Sarkiyla, herself the dam of this season’s Prix du Jockey Club fourth Saiydabad.
Philomene
3yo b f Dubawi-Prudenzia (Dansili) As a half-sister to two top-class performers in the globetrotting Magic Wand and Irish Oaks heroine Chicquita, Philomene was destined to be the subject of intense bidding when she went under the hammer.
The daughter of Dubawi is the eighth foal out of the wonderful producer Prudenzia – a Listed-winning Dansili half-sister to two black-type winners in Pacifique and English King – and fetched a cool €1,625,000 when selling to Godolphin from Ecurie des Monceaux at the 2019 sale. Bred by Ecurie des Monceaux and Ecurie Skymarc Farm, the filly provided Dubawi with his 200th individual stakes winner in the Prix Pénélope at Saint-Cloud in April. She also showed herself to have genuine Group 1 class when second to Joan Of Arc in the Prix de Diane in June. Philomene’s Galileo yearling half-brother kept up the family’s multi-million sales record when snapped up by MV Magnier for €2,000,000 at last year’s sale.
Sealiway
3yo ch c Galiway-Kensea (Kendargent) A first Group 1 winner for Haras de Colleville’s third-season sire Galiway – a stakes winner and Group-placed Galileo half-brother to dual Grade 2 US winner Silent Name – Sealiway was picked up for a modest €62,000 when selling to Paul Nataf from Colleville, who will offer his sister at this year’s auction.
subsequently added Europe’s most valuable and prestigious race to his CV when winning the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe, defeating the likes of Enable, Stradivarius and Persian King in the process. That added to his Prix du Jockey Club victory for Jean-Claude Rouget the previous year. The son of Siyouni has since stood his first season at Coolmore for a fee of €30,000.

A runner-up on his first start at three this year in the Prix de Fontainebleau, Sealiway bounced back from a below-par run in the Poule d’Essai des Poulains to finish an excellent second to St Mark’s Basilica in the Prix du Jockey Club.

Wonderful Tonight Wonderful Tonight, a dual Group 1 winner last year, was a €40,000 buy from this sale in 2018
performer for Jerome Reynier and owner Jean-Claude Seroul, Skalleti has more than accounted for his €85,000 price tag when selling to Alain Decrion from Colleville at this sale in 2016. The charismatic grey has risen dramatically up the grades, with his four stakes wins at four headlined by the Prix Dollar and Premio Roma. The Prix Gontaut-Biron was added to his CV last year, followed by another victory in the Prix Dollar, and a second to Addeybb in the Champion Stakes. The second foal out of Guy Pariente’s wonderful producer Skallet, a Listed-winning daughter of Muhaymin, Skalleti was finally rewarded for his consistent efforts with a first success at the top level
– and a first for his Haras de Colleville-based sire – in the Prix d’Ispahan in May, having earlier won the Prix Exbury and Prix d’Harcourt. He followed that up with a crushing five-length victory in a Munich Group 1, meaning he is four from four this year.
Sottsass
5yo ch h Siyouni-Starlet’s Sister (Galileo) A €340,000 purchase by Oceanic Bloodstock from Ecurie des Monceaux in 2017, Peter Brant’s White Birch Farm has a significant association with the family of Sottsass having bought into My Sister Nat and Sistercharlie, the latter finishing second in the Prix de Diane before collecting no fewer than seven Grade 1s in the US for Chad Brown. Sottsass featured in these pages last year, but
4yo bbr f Le Havre-Salvation (Montjeu) The flagbearer for David Menuisier’s burgeoning yard, Wonderful Tonight has proven simply wonderful in three seasons for her trainer, owner Chris Wright and breeder Ecurie La Cauvinière. The daughter of leading French sire Le Havre, also responsible for other Group 1-winning fillies Avenir Certain, La Cressonniere and Villa Marina, cost just €40,000 from the sale three years ago but has earned multiple times that with victories in the Prix de Royallieu, British Champions Fillies & Mares Stakes, and this season the Hardwicke Stakes and most recently the Lillie Langtry Stakes. The half-sister to the stakes-placed Penjade holds leading claims in all the major mile-and-a-half contests for the remainder of 2021, not least the Arc. KITTY TRICE
