Knicks Go wins the Breeders’ Cup Classic under Joel Rosario at Del Mar
Paul Curtis ANALYSIS
I
N A year lacking a standout performer, Knicks Go gets the nod as the 2021 Longines World’s Best Racehorse with an official mark of 129 after a dominant display in the Breeders’ Cup Classic in November. With ifs and buts about the form of many of the leading performers of last year the progressive record of Knicks Go over the past two years makes him a solid choice ahead of top European trio Adayar, Mishriff and St Mark’s Basilica, who the handicappers have found impossible to split since last August. It’s a position with which Racing Post Ratings largely agrees, with Knicks Go’s Del Mar success earning an RPR of 130, though by our reckoning star Hong Kong miler Golden Sixty is deserving of more credit than he’s given in the World’s Best Racehorse Rankings. Joint-top on RPRs after hitting the 130 mark when winning the Hong Kong Mile for the second time at Sha Tin in December, he was registering a record 19th win in Hong Kong to better the win records of former stars Silent Witness and Beauty Generation and a WBRR figure of 125 looks to do him a disservice. Knicks Go’s late surge prevented another three-way tie at the head of the rankings after Crystal Ocean, Enable, and Waldgeist shared the honours in 2019. As was the case then, there was very little to choose between leading European performers Adayar, Mishriff and St Mark’s Basilica with the official handicappers having had the trio on their WBRR figure of 127 since Mishriff won the Juddmonte International last August. A case can be made for either of the trio to be considered the best in Europe last year, though the strongest claims lie with the three-year-old pair who had both beaten Mishriff before his York romp in a substandard Juddmonte. For our money Adayar’s King George rates a bit more convincing than St Mark’s Basilica’s Eclipse and edges the verdict with an RPR of 129 against 128 for the other multiple Group 1-winning pair. Although a few pounds down the table Adayar’s stablemate Hurricane Lane, third when the shorter price of the pair for the Derby, has claims to rate higher. His six-length success in the Grand Prix de Paris, when giving Alenquer a similar beating to Mishriff in the Juddmonte, reads well and with a profile that suggests further progress it will be interesting to see what he can achieve this year. His RPR of 125 is in line with his official mark of 123, but time may prove him the better of the Godolphin pair. While not needing to be at his best, Hurricane Lane’s comfortable win in
Knicks Go a solid choice – but Sixty done a disservice the St Leger was clearly the best staying performance by a three-year-old last year, a win that rates him alongside Subjectivist and Trueshan on an RPR of 122 at the head of last year’s leading shows of stamina in Europe. Worldwide, Melbourne Cup winner Verry Elleegant (RPR 122) and leading Japanese stayer World Premiere (RPR 121) also come into the argument. The official lists have taken a more positive view of both the Melbourne form and Subjectivist’s Gold Cup in nudging them up to a mark of 123, and to rate both as superior to past champions such as Kayf Tara and Yeats, both of whom were assigned official marks of 122, looks a bit rich. We’d contend that peak RPRs of 127 and 126 for those past champions, against 122 for last year’s leading pair, is a better fit historically. Either way, Verry Elleegant can be considered the de facto champion stayer of last year by means of the fillies’ and mares’ allowance. She also rates the leading distaff performer of 2021. Things are similarly tight among the leading milers of last year in the WBRR, with Golden Sixty rated alongside Baaeed and Palace Pier on 125, and Knicks Go also having a say on his dirt form at the distance.
As discussed earlier, RPRs rate Golden Sixty the clear pick of the quartet on mile form, but what is beyond dispute is that there was very little between Baaeed and Palace Pier, with RPRs also unable to split the pair on 127. Arguably the most exciting horse of last year, the unbeaten Baaeed progressed rapidly in little over four months from an impressive debut maiden win to the top of the tree with a narrow verdict over Palace Pier in the Queen Elizabeth II Stakes. Having given Lady Bowthorpe a slightly bigger beating in the Lockinge, Palace Pier can be rated a little below his best in the Ascot race, hence earning a share of top spot despite that reverse. Having initially rated Baaeed narrowly behind Palace Pier, the official handicappers have found a pound and wisely nudged him upwards since the previous edition of
‘Hurricane Lane has claims to rank higher than stablemate Adayar’
the WBRR in early November. Baaeed’s place as the ‘hype horse’ of the moment has been well and truly eclipsed by current ‘buzz horse’ Flightline, who is rated joint-top sprinter despite having raced only three times. We are more positive still with an RPR of 126+, the best figure of last year in races that qualify for the sprint category in the WBRR. He may have only raced three times, but in each start he’s thrashed his rivals by a double-digit margin, making up to an aggregate winning distance of a whopping 38 lengths. While one might question the quality of opposition it’s hard to argue against the speed and style of those victories, notably when a runaway winner of the Grade 1 Malibu Stakes on Boxing Day when starting at long odds-on to beat Breeders’ Cup Sprint second Dr. Schivel. Time will tell, but there’s still an element of caution in his divisionleading figure and everything points to it going higher still as we get more evidence of his ability. We could easily be talking about an outstanding champion this time next year. Nature Strip leads the way among the sprinters on turf, retaining his
official mark of 124 from 2020 when rated third-best sprinter in the world and making this the eighth time an Aussie sprinter has had at least a share of the spoils in this division since 2010. Things were less rosy on the domestic front with Starman only rating joint-seventh best sprinter in the WBRR with a mark of 119, alongside French speedster Suesa. Initially rated 120 after the July Cup, the minor downgrade looks a little harsh and RPRs are more positive with Starman retaining his Newmarket figure of 124. That neither he nor Suesa could build on their summer form in two subsequent starts was undoubtedly disappointing though. Continuing the competitive theme, there was also little to choose between the leading European fillies and mares of last year with just 1lb separating the leading players on both RPRs and WBRR. Officially Snowfall, who looked a shoo-in for top spot after her Oaks hattrick, shares the spoils with Tarnawa on 120, ahead of Alcohol Free and Suesa. A disappointing end to the campaign and Tarnawa’s solid second in the Arc give the older filly the edge by our assessment.

Matt Gardner expects Flightline to become a global superstar next season
T
HE Longines World’s Best Racehorse Rankings do not make for positive viewing for fans of US racing. Of the 14 horses who make up the top ten and ties just four are trained in the US and one of those, Flightline, only burst on to the scene at the last minute, winning the Grade 1 Malibu Stakes at Santa Anita on December 26. Knicks Go does head the rankings, deservedly so after a fine season capped by an impressive win in the Breeders’ Cup Classic. His RPR of 130 was the best achieved in the world in 2021 (alongside Golden Sixty’s win in the Hong Kong Mile), but he is reportedly set to retire to stud after running in the Pegasus World Cup on Saturday, while another US-based member of the top ten, Medina Spirit,
WBRR rankings summit may have markedly different look next year sadly died while training in December. It’s a picture further supported by the top 100 Group/Grade 1 races (for 3yo+) rankings with just five of the top 40 races taking place in the US, a number almost matched by France and Hong Kong and bettered by Great Britain, Japan and Australia. The future, however, has the potential to be bright with several juveniles looking set to take high rank this year. The highest RPR handed out to a two-year-old in the US in 2021 was the 118 awarded to Corniche following his win in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile, a figure bettered among the juvenile ranks only by Native Trail. There’s strength in depth, too, with another four US-based two-year-olds earning an RPR of 114 or higher, a healthy number given just nine reached that level in Europe, especially when considering that the Europeans have arguably had greater opportunity than their US
counterparts, averaging almost a whole run more per horse. That’s not to say the Europeans don’t have potential, certainly the likes of Native Trail, Luxembourg, Tenebrism and Coroebus all appeal as cracking three-year-old prospects, but the same is true of the Americans. Echo Zulu, unbeaten in four starts and particularly impressive in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies, heads the ante-post market for the Kentucky Oaks and looks set to be the dominant horse in her division. Corniche, also unbeaten, looks all over a three-year-old physically and is likely capable of further Grade 1 success, even if his trainer’s current ban from Churchill Downs may prevent him from running in the Kentucky Derby. Jack Christopher has achieved an RPR of 115 despite only making the track twice, missing an intended clash with Corniche at the Breeders’ Cup through injury, and remains an exciting prospect, while Rattle N Roll,
