WORLD’S BEST RACEHORSE RANKINGS MARK CRANHAM (RACINGPOST.COM/PHOTOS)

Paul Curtis ANALYSIS

T

HE Longines World’s Best Racehorse Rankings bring confirmation of Ghaiyyath’s position as leading performer of 2020, with the four-time Group 1 winner retaining the official mark of 130 with which he was credited after beating Magical by a convincing three lengths in the Juddmonte International in August. That performance was rated to a similar level on Racing Post Ratings with a figure of 131 and cemented his position as the best racehorse in the world, backing up the RPR of 129 he ran to when seeing off Enable in the Coral-Eclipse. Credited with posting the two best figures in the world for 2020 through that Group 1 brace, Ghaiyyath was also responsible for three of the nine 125+ RPRs recorded in Europe last year, showing consistency to go with his top-class ability. With top spot having been shared in the previous two WBRR lists, the 4lb gap to the second-placed horse in the list, Breeders’ Cup Classic winner Authentic, is notable, while the bigger 5lb margin to the next best turf performers underlines Ghaiyyath’s superiority. Again, it’s a stance with which RPRs agree, with Ghaiyyath 4lb clear of our next best turf horses Mohaather and Palace Pier on 127. That Ghaiyyath enjoyed dominance over a less-than-stellar cast is underlined by his official mark falling 2lb below the recent average for the WBRR overall champion, but nonetheless it’s a level of which he’s worthy. Mohaather and Palace Pier, sharing top spot among the milers on RPRs, were similarly a cut above their European rivals in their division and both could arguably have rated a little higher in the official rankings. While Mohaather has been given some credit for overcoming a troubled run in the Sussex Stakes, his mark of just 124 in the rankings looks to underplay his superiority there. Likewise, Palace Pier, rated 1lb higher in the rankings on 125, looked more dominant in his Prix Jacques le Marois defeat of easy Coronation Stakes winner Alpine Star than the 6lb difference between them in the official rankings. Furthermore, Palace Pier was initially rated 126 by the official handicappers and was still on that perch, alongside Authentic, in the post-Breeders’ Cup WBRR update of November 8. The subsequent downgrading of the Marois form looks a little harsh given that Palace Pier and Alpine Star raced only once more, both with forgivable defeats. Conversely, Persian King’s defeat of Pinatubo in the Prix du Moulin has been received favourably by the official handicappers with his perch

On top of the world: Ghaiyyath and William Buick scorch to victory in the Group 1 Coral-Eclipse Stakes at Sandown in July

Consistency and class see worthy champion emerge

of 125, perhaps too much so given he enjoyed the run of the race there against an arguably unlucky runnerup. His 3lb margin over Pinatubo in the official list looks to flatter him compared to the other leading milers. The mile division is similarly subdued in the rankings, with Palace Pier and Persian King the lowestrated champion milers since 2004, but bucking the trend is the now three-time champion stayer Stradivarius. Rated 120 and 122 in the last two rankings, Stradivarius showed himself better than ever last year with his impressive ten-length Gold Cup romp, and his latest WBRR mark of 125 officially ranks him the best stayer of the past 30 years. We wouldn’t go that far on RPRs and would argue that past champion stayers such as Deep Impact and Yeats were worthy of greater credit than they received. Given the treatment of others in the rankings, it

is also notable that Stradivarius has retained his post-Gold Cup mark of 125 despite four subsequent defeats, but it is beyond doubt that Stradivarius has been the leading stayer of recent years and he is now the first to head the division for three consecutive years. Levels among the sprinters have stood up well, with Australian duo Bivouac and Classique Legend sharing honours with an up-toscratch 125, closely followed by compatriot Nature Strip. Remarkably, this is the seventh time since Black Caviar won the first of her

‘His latest WBRR mark of 125 officially ranks him the best stayer of the past 30 years’

four leading sprinter titles in 2010 that an Australian sprinter has had at least a share of top spot in the sprinting division. Battaash, the leading sprinter of 2019, lost that perch despite winning all three starts last year. The brilliance of his peak performances of recent years was clearly lacking, however, and he fell back 3lb to the 123 with which he was credited in 2017 and 2018. Even that level might be considered generous purely on last year’s form – using official figures it’s hard to get him above 120 – but given his overall form it is probably a fair reflection. Leading filly or mare on official marks is nine-time Grade 1 winner Almond Eye, who is credited with running to 124 over both a mile and a mile and a half. Given that races are typically run on fast ground, form in Japan can be hard to equate using standard pounds-per-length methodology and the official

handicappers have done well to keep her that high, particularly given her sex allowance. Enable, Love, Magical and Tarnawa share top spot among the distaffers in Europe with official marks of 122. With the exception of Tarnawa (116), whose Breeders’ Cup Turf defeat of a below-par Magical has received favourable attention, that is a position reflected in similar RPRs of 124, 124 and 123 for the first three named. Love is obviously the hardest of the trio to pin down. She won her three Group 1s last year by an impressive aggregate of 18 and a quarter lengths, yet there are material doubts over the strength of each race. The best rival she faced last year was Nassau runnerup One Voice with a peak RPR of 116, while she faced only one older horse (Manuela De Vega, RPR 113) and has yet to be tested against males. She could yet show herself to be in Enable’s class, but there is plenty still to prove.

Sam Walker expects Sheikh Mohammed’s operation to thrive after ending a 20-year wait

S

HEIKH MOHAMMED is the greatest investor horseracing has ever known, but it has been some time since his Godolphin colours were carried by the best horse on the planet. Indeed, until Ghaiyyath officially secured the world title yesterday, two whole decades had gone by since Dubai Millennium and Sakhee carried the all blue of Godolphin to land consecutive world championships in 2000 and 2001. Of course, coming across the best horse in the world in any given year is not easy, but powerhouse ownerbreeders have shown they can keep producing the best once their buying, breeding and racing divisions find harmony. Juddmonte and Coolmore, for example, have secured a combined seven world champions in the last

Godolphin firing on all cylinders and ready to build on Ghaiyyath’s success two decades through horses like Frankel and Hurricane Run. The question now for Godolphin is whether Ghaiyyath’s ascension is a sign of a return to the glory years. Sheikh Mohammed’s operation was monumental on the world stage le (right) 20 years ago. As the table shows, their six highest-rated horses by RPR raced within a five-yearr window between 1996 and 2001 – and all six were in the running for world titles. After that the Dubai ruler’s investment in the sport increased. He bought Australian nds breeding giant Woodlan Stud for around £250 million and created the largest racing complex on the planet at Meydan, which could be seen from space even before Google Maps and is surely the greatest testament to the racehorse since the colosseum.

But rather than improving, or even plateauing, Godolphin’s leading horses have actually failed to live up to that exceptional early promise for a long time. There were fewer star names and the number of Group/ Grade 1 winners per year fell to a low of just two in 2014. The tide started to turn sho ortly after as Charlie Ap ppleby’s Newmarket t team gained m momentum and the Australia investment started to reap r rewards, and by 2018 G Godolphin were back on n top with a staggering 30 Group/Grade G 1 wins. Then n came the star names. Cross Counter won the Melbourne Cup in 2018 and the following year Appleby really hit his stride, sending out champion sprinter Blue Point and champion juvenile Pinatubo. Ghaiyyath was not far off the best in

the world in 2019, and last year he continued the momentum of the team. With Group 1 victories in the Coronation Cup, Coral-Eclipse and

Juddmonte International, he ultimately ran out a clear winner of the world title. Success is bound to ebb and flow from year to year because racing is a game of probabilities, but the sheikh’s outfit is clearly firing on all cylinders and the pieces may be in place now for continued success. The previous lull may have been caused in part by a dispute with Coolmore, which resulted in the Dubai team shunning Galileo stock right up until 2017, during which time the sire dominated the world’s leading stallions list. But the rift seems to be healing and the sires at Sheikh Mohammed’s Darley operation are now making their own mark at stud, with Cross Counter, Blue Point, Pinatubo and Ghaiyyath all coming from Darley sires. We can only hope the long-term result of Godolphin getting back on track is more champion horses like their former greats.

Three-year-olds struggle but Palace Pier and Mogul look harshly treated RATINGS levels among the three-year-olds remain low. Although four managed to better the historic low of 123 from Sottsass in 2019, the five lowest-rated champion three-year-olds have all come since 2014. Breeders’ Cup Classic winner Authentic leads the hile way on 126, while Palace Pier is o unlucky not to be rated his equal and rightly leads the way among the Classic crop. In Swoop’s of official mark o 122, which is mirrored by hiis RPR, represents a disappointing return for the top three-year-old middledistance colt of the Classic generation, but whether he deserves that position ahead of Grand Prix de Paris victor Mogul (above) is debatable. There are few points of difference between the WBRR and RPRs, but Mogul does look to have been hard done by in ranking behind In Swoop on the official figures. In Swoop gets his mark of 122 from the Arc when second to Sottsass, and there are sound grounds for rating that an improved effort, but Mogul looked to beat him fair and square in the Grand Prix de Paris and his

subsequent Hong Kong Vase success could have been viewed more positively. Mogul rates the leading middle-distance three-year-old colt of last year on RPRs with a mark of 124, alongside stablemate Love. The difficulty in assessing her wide-margin wins against op inferior opposition is touched on elsewhere, butt 124 could still prrove conservative. c In any case, with her sex allowance she would w rate the fo orm choice were she to meet her malee counterparts. pite the subdued Despi levels overall among the threeyear-olds, the Classics fared well with both Kameko and Love rating above-average Guineas winners. Love went on to post a top Oaks figure, while Galileo Chrome’s St Leger was also up to scratch. Remarkably, it’s only fiveand-a-half-length Derby winner Serpentine who failed to match standard. One would normally associate such a winning margin with the better Derby winners, but initial doubts about the form were borne out and, after failing to match his Derby form in subsequent starts, his official mark of 120 (RPR 121) may still prove inflated.
