hello John Puckey, Events Manager

Look out for our huge New Year’s Eve when The Square will be transformed in to a New Orleans style Mardi Gras Party – there’s great live music, DJs and entertainment. James Morton continues his residency with the popular Soul Jazz Club. Welcoming guest players from the UK jazz scene, James plays Blue Note style funk and soul. This Autumn we welcome the Institute of Art and Ideas to The Square for the first of a series of talks. Michael Eavis will speak at a festival themed evening in October, and November’s speaker will be legendary producer Joe Boyd. The Square is located in leafy Clifton among the beautiful Georgian surroundings of Bristol’s heart. It’s positioned on Berkeley Square, just off Park Street. There’s tranquillity just a step away from the flotsam and jetsam, so pay us a visit next time you need a break from the buzz of the city.

— OCTOBER 2015

The IAI presents: Michael Eavis & Orlando Seale The festival season is almost over, so here at The Square, The Institute of Art and Ideas has a special finale to help music lovers reminisce. It is our pleasure to welcome Michael Eavis, founder of Glastonbury. He’s going to speak about the history of the uber-festival, how it started and the future of the event. Starting as a small event on a dairy farm with free milk, the festival has spawned dozens of imitators and become a flagship event for the entire music scene. There’s music too, from BBC 6 music favourite Orlando Seale and The Swell. Described by The Telegraph as “like Arcade Fire with better lyrics”, film star Orlando Seale struts the stage telling tales of the human condition and challenges of modern life.

— MEMBER’S PROFILE JULIAN COX MRBS

JULIAN COX MRBS CMO, Strategist & Business Mentor

Julian Cox is a Bristol-based artist, whose collaboration with The Square started in 2008. In 2006 Julian was elected to the Royal British Society of Sculptors. This year, Julian has cast a series of limited edition bronze sculptures, ‘Ten Torsos.’ These works, which are influenced by classical antiquities from across the world, are patinated with a vert-de-gris finish and part polished. Six of the first edition of this successful group have already been sold within three months of casting. Julian’s drawings are either subtle female nudes or abstract designs drawn in Indian ink on ivory coloured paper and mounted in simple ebonised frames. Disliking the word minimalist, he describes his pictures as having been reduced to only that which is essential, or ‘essentialism.’ The works look like they have been spontaneously created but are, in fact, the result of numerous preliminary pencil sketches which have been refined and then accurately reproduced in ink. They are both calm and sensual. Examples of Julian’s sculpture and ink drawings can be seen on his website: www.juliancoxartist.co.uk Members are welcome to arrange a visit to his studio by emailing e@juliancoxartist.co.uk
