STUDIO BRIEF
Re-appropriating (ideas of) public space Under the premise of the highly complex conditions of Johannesburg's public spaces, our project is to engage propositionally with the Braamfontein Urban Design Framework by Local Studio, based on the idea of creating accessible public space to a mixed social/ cultural group of users, stakeholders and governance groups. In the meantime, we need to make fully use of digital participation tools that helps us engaging with the local residents and users from afar.

Johannesburg has experienced the apartheid period, and now is going through the postapartheid period. The brand new city is shining vigour in its own way.

A meaningful example of temporary use of disused urban space. This project is a self-manage project, the design team not only make fully use of those spaces but also encourage the residents involved in the whole process, from the very beginning of construction to production and even to consume aa and sell, which formed as a sustainable loop.
Compared with Juta street This form of project can be tested in Juta street since the context of which is relatively similar to the precedent. It is a effective way of people interact with space, and different groups could largely involved in the participation and practicing process, which may boost the bond between those groups and help the ideal of integration.

Pilot Project - Hassan Khan Exhibition This is a successful project of using derelict spaces as exhibition spaces, which located aside of the pedestrian street, it brings vitality to the street in a way of interjecting the art works amidst the public and pedestrian activities. The space is conceived to be a pop-up gallery space, and to engage art interventions that may serve as a catalyst for urban development and revitalization of surrounding buildings, shops and passageways.
Compared with Juta street There are few disused indoor spaces on both sides of Juta street, which can be seen as a waste of urban resources, since many users on the street have few space to stay.
S
Thus, it may possible to make use of these spaces, and create possibility for diverse activities for different groups.

4 DISORDERED PUBLIC SPACES #LEARNING FROM ANALYSIS G AT H E R I N G , S U R V E Y I N G & M A P P I N G
The whole street lacks high quality public spaces, and they are deprived and disconnected, only few public spaces are popular but also lacks of amentity, which makes it hard for people to stay.
Through different ways of gathering information, we formed a further understranding of the site, and specificly find out the potentials and challenges that the site is facing with, which became the foundation of the development of design strategy.
Most of the street spaces are used for single activity, like passing or sitting, and different spaces are lack of arrangement, like parking and walking spaces.

The form of public space can be typologically induced as point, line and plane. By applying these strategies, we aim to create a highly effective street to connect each public node while improve the pausing spots like street corners.

Thereby, it might be a relatively effective way to plan the street in a dynamic way, aim to satisfied different users' needs, increase space using efficiency and adapt changing social conditions.

REFLECTION
After learning from precedents and analysis the condition of Braamfontein,I believe the development of urban space can be more realistic through flexible and temporary use. Our task is less to establish facts than to create new possibilities, and the users themselves become producers of th e space.
D u r i n g t h i s 6 w e e k s p ro j e c t , I m a i n l y take responsibility for analysis, individual strategy and graphic de s i gn.
I s p e nt a l ot of t i m e on t he m e t h o d s , but to the practice, it could be better if I can make a phased plan ab out t he t e m p or ar y us e of s p ac e s .
It cannot be denied that our group work meet many problems, I think the communication between group membe r s i s i m p or t ant , ot he r w i s e t he group' s i de as c annot b e unde r s t ood well. But unfortunately, some of the group members are hard to obbey the ti m e t o at t e nd group di s c us s i on, which needs plenty time to deliver discussion results seperately and also influence the promoting of group w or k s .
Additionally, as mentioned before, the diverse of user groups in this area is not that clearly reflected in my individual strategy, and how c a n t h e y b e i n v o l v e d i n t h e p ro c e s s c oul d b e de ve l op de e p e r.
The methodology based on the book - urban catalyst: the power of temporary use. It provides several approaches that highlight the possibilities in dealing with the temp or a r y u se of urban spaces.

Finally, I know it is impossible to avoid difficult in team work, if problems happend, I would choose to point it out directly, and also I s houl d re s p e c t ot he r m e m b e r s ' w o rk .
