97 YEARS’ EXPERIENCE IN DANCE TEACHER EDUCATION
WHY DANCE TEACHER EDUCATION? Dance Education is an incredibly diverse and exciting profession. It is an area that is enjoying continued worldwide popularity and offers a number of different career opportunities. Graduates who have completed Faculty of Education programmes have pursued a range of rewarding careers within dance education all over the world. Many have set up their own successful dance schools, worked internationally, developed innovative dance practices and scholarships or taken on leadership roles in dance. Dance teachers can work in many different contexts depending on their areas of interest and choice of qualification. As a dance teacher, you could be preparing students to become professional dancers, providing specialist subject education in a school or college, or helping people to learn more about dance and movement so they can improve their health and wellbeing. You could be teaching dance in private dance schools, vocational schools, state sector primary and secondary schools, community settings, and in Further or Higher Education. In addition to high level dance knowledge, prospective dance teachers need to develop excellent communication skills and engage in critical, reflective and creative practices. YOUR FUTURE OUR SUCCESSFUL RAD GRADUATES GO ON TO WORK ALL OVER THE WORLD, LEADING THE WAY IN DANCE AND DANCE TEACHER EDUCATION.
10
RAD.ORG.UK
After graduating from the RAD, I quickly set out to acquire as much varied teaching experience as I could, ranging from community classes delivered on behalf of a rugby team’s dance foundation, to delivering ballet lessons in boarding schools and private nurseries. During this time, I began working for the Junior School of the independent ballet company, Ballet Black, under Artistic Director Cassa Pancho. Although I never noticed my race whilst dancing as a child, through teaching I had come to realise that perhaps ballet was not as accessible as I would have imagined. Joining Ballet Black seemed like the perfect way to show children from minority backgrounds that there can be a future in ballet. I also started up classes at a primary school in London, and after entering the first few students for RAD exams, I realised that I was allowing children in the area to take part in something that would otherwise be out of their reach. The classes began to grow, and as I was looking for a venue for En Pointe to call ‘home’, a wonderful community organisation, the Chelsea Theatre, got in touch and asked if I would like to run classes at their studios. I now also run classes in many other schools and nurseries and am very keen that all the children enrolled, regardless of their backgrounds, should be able to access professional and formal ballet training. Since graduating, I have maintained close ties with the RAD and the great work that they do. I have been on the London & Middlesex Regional Advisory Committee (of which I am now Chairperson) for over three years and I have also recently become a Mentor to students enrolled on RAD programmes."
REENA BHATTACHARJEE
I work in Slovenia, championing changes to our ballet system in order to ensure standards in the public sector are raised. I am organising seminars for ballet teachers whilst looking to introduce RAD CPD workshops in Slovenia for the first time. I have become the Head of Study for a group of teachers, sponsored by the Ministry of Education, Science and Sport and my colleagues and I have organised a new Slovenian ballet competition called TUTU which ran for the first time this year. The PDPTC programme gave me wings, knowledge and confidence to tackle all these issues and tasks, alongside my own fulltime teaching."
ANA TROJNAR
Having discussed career options with my tutor, I wanted to explore opportunities abroad so it was suggested that I contact the Conservatory of International Style and Cultural Arts (CISCA) in Shanghai, as the founder and several of the employees are former students of the RAD. After a successful interview via webcam and a lot of contemplation with my family, close friends and some of my teachers, I decided to accept this exciting, potentially life-changing job offer. The prospect of moving by myself to the other side of the world for my first real job is extremely daunting, but opportunities like this are too good to refuse. Studying at the RAD has given me the advantage of being able to travel and use everything I have learnt over the past three years. I have been warned that China will be a big culture shock, but I am ready to jump into the deep end and start this big adventure."
LORIAN KURZWELL I have gained so much from becoming an RAD teacher. Following completion of the PDTD programme I became a teacher for RAD Dance School, which helped me grow in confidence and when the opportunity of working in the United States was offered, I jumped at the chance! It has been a very unique and diverse experience and I have learnt so much from the dancers and teachers here. They are very adaptable to all styles and enjoy fresh challenges and it is wonderful to work with the RAD in the U.S."

RAD.ORG.UK STUDENT SUPPORT
STUDENT SUPPORT WHETHER YOU ARE STUDYING ONSITE OR BY DISTANCE LEARNING, WE HAVE A RANGE OF SERVICES TO HELP YOU WITH YOUR WELFARE, WELLBEING AND ACADEMIC STUDY SKILLS. The Faculty of Education is committed to supporting you at all stages of the application process and during your programmes of study, whether these are onsite or our distance learning programmes that are delivered all over the world.
Who’s who The Student Support Officer and the Study Skills Coordinator work closely together with the Faculty of Education tutoring team to provide a holistic approach to student support. The Student Support Officer looks after the more pastoral aspects of student support as well as managing the learning plans for students with disabilities (including long term medical conditions, learning disability and mental health conditions). The Study Skills Coordinator is directed towards supporting students with their academic work. This includes note taking, research and developing writing skills. Student Support Officer Email: studentsupport@rad.org.uk Tel: +44 (0)20 7316 8014 Before you start Depending on the programme you opt for, you may have questions about what it’s like to study in London, or are worried about how you will be able to manage your studies on top of having a family and full-time or part-time work. Or perhaps you are a student with a learning disability or medical condition that may affect how you can participate in the programme. You may have questions about how we can support your learning while you are studying with us. The Student Support Officer is here to answer these questions and we encourage you to contact us before applying.
Our services Counselling We take the mental wellbeing of our students seriously and recognise that sometimes you may have to deal with difficult personal situations. For onsite students, our experienced independent counsellor is here to listen and offer a confidential service to talk through any troubling issues you may be facing.
14
RAD.ORG.UK
Health and wellbeing Although we don’t have medical services onsite, for students studying with us at RAD headquarters, we can signpost you to local services including GPs and physiotherapy. We also encourage students with injuries to use the specialist NHS dance clinic at the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital in London. For students studying by distance, the Student Support Officer is able to talk to you about the support you may need to find within your country of study. Academic study skills The Study Skills Coordinator provides group tutorials and one-to-one support on a range of academic study-related topics which include academic referencing, essay writing, critical thinking, structuring and composing written assessments, presentations skills and proof reading. Disability support The Faculty of Education welcomes applications from students with disabilities who wish to pursue a career in the dance teaching profession. For onsite programmes, we encourage you to visit us before applying, to view classes and facilities and discuss any support or adjustments that may be required. Disabled students allowance (DSA) UK based students are encouraged to apply for Disabled Students Allowance* prior to starting on programme with us. This enables us to get your institutional support up and running as soon as you arrive. Dyslexia support If you know that you have dyslexia or another learning difficulty, we strongly encourage you to let us know as soon as possible. This will help us develop a Personal Learning Support Plan for you, and, if you're based in the UK, to apply for the Disabled Students Allowance if you have not already done so. In order to apply for a Disabled Students Allowance, a recent diagnostic assessment (post 16 years) is required. These can be obtained by contacting the following: Specialist Teacher/Assessor with an Assessment Practising Certificate or Chartered Psychologist specialising in Specific Learning Difficulties registered with the Health Care Practitioners Council (HCPC). Wherever possible this should be obtained from your secondary school or college before leaving. If this is not possible, we can help you arrange to have a diagnostic assessment. These assessments are fairly expensive, (usually between £400-£500) but eligible students are able to apply for financial assistance from our Hardship Fund to contribute towards the cost. For successful DSA applications, if you have been allocated a specialist dyslexia tutor, we can help you set this support up and if required, we can book you a regular meeting room to meet your tutor on a weekly basis. If during the programme you identify some difficulties that you think may be dyslexia related, we will arrange for you to have an online screening to help you identify the type of support you may need.
Learning support plans If you disclose an existing disability or become disabled during the programme, you will be offered a Personal Learning Support Plan. This is an agreement developed between you and the Student Support Officer to identify your support needs and any necessary reasonable adjustments for onsite learning, distance learning and teaching placements. After obtaining your consent, this information will be passed onto the relevant teaching staff and teaching placement mentors in a confidential report. If you would like further information about the programme content or additional support needs, please contact the Student Support Officer or the Programme Manager of the programme you are interested in. Assistive technology We have a range of assistive technology such as ClaroRead and Dragon Naturally Speaking in our computer suite, supporting all students and particularly those with learning difficulties to be able to use other strategies for researching, structuring and composing their academic written assessments. RAD headquarters building: Facilities The RAD site has level and ramped access to the ground floor. There is an adapted toilet and three further accessible toilets on the ground floor. Whilst most taught sessions take place at RAD headquarters, sometimes students go on trips to the theatre and perform at other venues. Teaching placements take place at a variety of private dance schools, secondary schools, primary schools and community settings. Where possible, reasonable adjustments are made for visiting these offsite locations. * More information on how to apply for DSA for students from: Scotland - saas.gov.uk Northern Ireland - nidirect.gov.uk/articles/disabled-students-allowances England - gov.uk/disabled-students-allowances-dsas Wales - studentfinancewales.co.uk

Spring Mews
After getting in contact with some people living outside London and a couple of churches within London, I was sent to a Christian flat share organisation which is how I found my housemates. Every single person I met through the website was so helpful even if a flat share didn't work out! I even made a friend through the website and we occasionally meet up for coffee which has made my first few months in London a lot more comfortable." I managed to find accommodation quite easily as I knew someone who was already a student at the RAD; we used to dance together at my dance school in Luxembourg. She already had accommodation and needed someone to take the available second room." Spring Mews is perfectly located in Zone 1, minutes from Vauxhall station, the banks of the River Thames and with easy access to the Royal Academy of Dance." To find accommodation I searched online as I wasn't able to go to England and look for places. I eventually decided on Unite Independent student halls, as this was fairly reasonably priced compared to other student halls and flats. I heard about this through a friend who had stayed with Unite before and could recommend them. There are lots of good points about Unite as all your bills are included and the maintenance and reception service is good."
I moved in with a family and it's been awesome! I enjoy the environment and get occasional babysitting jobs if I want. Another great thing about a house share with a family is that it's not contract based, so I'm free to go home over summer without worrying about contracts or finding a sublet, which is perfect as I've moved across the Atlantic!" I actually met another student on our audition day - we hit it off and so did our mums. We took each others numbers and added each other on Facebook and ended up putting a deposit down on two rooms in the same flat at Spring Mews student accommodation in Vauxhall. Our main priorities were that we would be close to the RAD, all bills would be included and that we would be safe and comfortable wherever we stayed. Another thing that really attracted us to this accommodation was that it is all modern, private and so close to central London. It is on a tube and train route so only takes us four minutes to get to Clapham Junction. The accommodation was also only a year old when we moved in!"

MENTOR TESTIMONIAL
ROSIE CHESSON
My dance school in Wimbledon specialises in teaching the authentic Street Dance styles to children as young as two years old through to adults. Mentoring the RAD students in these classes gives them a great opportunity to develop their teaching skills with a range of ages and abilities, as well as to gain knowledge in a different dance style. I enjoy sharing my experience with the students and supporting them throughout their placement, and it's great watching them grow in confidence and ability.

Assessment mode
Modules are assessed through a variety of practical examinations, written assignments, presentations and assessment of teaching.
LEVEL 4
LEVEL 5
LEVEL 6
Level 4 is a dynamic year in which you study both practical and lecture based modules which will prepare you for studying at Higher Education and prepare your body and your mind to be a teacher of dance. You will spend time in the studio securing your own technique in both ballet and contemporary dance, train your body to understand the movement requirements to be a teacher alongside studying dance science so that you can better understand your body and the bodies of those you will one day be teaching. You will also be exposed to performance modules where you will learn to perform existing ballet repertoire as well as creating your own through an embodied knowledge of dance history. Modules such as dance analysis will allow you to develop critical analysis skills and dance teaching theory modules will allow you to take part in visits to observe dance teaching in schools (public and private sector), community dance projects and dance company education.
At Level 5, you will step up the knowledge and understanding that you have gained at Level 4, to continue to work on your own dance skills, developing your choreographic skills and studying dance from a historical, scientific and critical perspective. You will have the opportunity to make your own work set on other dance bodies, delve deeper into dance science and somatic practice and expand your ideas on what it means to become a teacher of dance. You will undertake two professional placements in which you will teach different groups of students in two dynamically different contexts. Throughout your experience, you will be supported by qualified, experienced mentors from the variety of partnerships we have as well as the wide professional expertise of the staff at the RAD.
At Level 6, you will be able to choose whether to focus on performance, choreography or critical studies. In selecting your elective, you will gain an enriched and in-depth experience in the area you choose. Alongside technique classes you will also undertake a dissertation which is individually tutored and draws on knowledge and skills gained at Level 4 and Level 5. Teaching skills are developed through a final professional placement supported by theoretical study of education, policies and practices relevant to the dance teacher. The Professional Placement and Career Preparation modules prepare you for entry to the world of work and today’s professional dance environment and allows you to remain in one placement through the duration of the year to allow you to watch your students’ progress from start to finish.

Third Year Student BA (Hons) Dance Education After having to change my career plans following a medical diagnosis, the BADE programme provided the perfect stepping stone to an alternative dance career; I could remain involved in dance and start to teach whilst being able to study at home. The Intensive Study Seminar week in the first year enabled me to meet others on the programme and made me feel part of the RAD education faculty, so that I knew I wasn’t alone. The programme has offered me a new focus, aided my exploration of dance sectors and expanded my knowledge.
ENTRY REQUIREMENTS Three GCE A level passes or equivalent. RAD Intermediate or equivalent examination in any dance genre. Appropriate English Language Proficiency test for students whose first language is not English.

Studying whilst teaching has enabled me to apply the knowledge from each module directly to my work and I have grown as a person, and as a dance teacher. The support from the RAD Faculty of Education, as well as fellow distance learners, has been pivotal to my success on the programme. Although it’s challenging at times, especially time management (working full-time alongside studying), it is utterly rewarding and has made me the teacher I am now.
It has increased my confidence, taught me to never give up, and that struggles can be tackled through joint learning and understanding of Dance Education, which has ultimately enabled my passion for dance to continue and to be passed on to my students. In the future, I would like to open my own inclusive dance school for the entire community; where old and young can participate in the joy of learning to dance. Dance is a doorway to discovery for individuals from all walks of life.

Modules are assessed through a range of written assignments which include essays, case studies and portfolios. At degree level, you will submit a written dissertation on your area of interest.
CERTIFICATE OF HIGHER EDUCATION: DANCE EDUCATION
DIPLOMA OF HIGHER EDUCATION: DANCE EDUCATION
At Level 4, you will gain a broad perspective on dance education across a range of sectors. You will also be introduced to educational concepts which are fundamental throughout your studies, as well as gaining knowledge and understanding of health, fitness and safety in relation to dance teaching. Level 4 includes a focus on the interrelationship between music and dance allowing you to explore a range of styles, genres and contexts as well as a comparative overview of musical aspects in order to reflect on and improve music in your own dance practice and teaching. This is further supported by modules focused on educational concepts in which you will reflect upon your own experiences and apply them to the fundamental concepts essential for effective learning and teaching to take place.
At Level 5, you will be able to extend your knowledge of philosophical, pedagogical and professional issues in dance teaching, as well as developing your research skills. You will be able to choose from a range of module options which are studied alongside three compulsory modules. At Level 5 you will have the opportunity to consider a more philosophical approach to the nature of dance by critically exploring what is inferred by the term 'dance' through challenging assumptions, pre-conceptions and traditional barriers. Alongside this, you will develop a practical understanding of the fundamental principles of teaching and learning styles and how these can be applied in the context of dance education. Key theories, including motivation, differentiation and progression, are all explored. A development of the analytical tools required to critically analyse dance are also studied as well as an exploration of the relationship between the physical and psychological dimensions of dance performance and teaching.
Students who gain the BA (Hons) Dance Education may be eligible to apply for the Postgraduate Certificate in Education: Dance Teaching (with Qualified Teacher Status).
Graduates with teaching experience may also apply for the Master of Arts in Education (Dance Teaching).
Employment prospects
Students who have completed this programme work in a range of careers in dance teaching, both in the public and private sector. Many of our students progress to postgraduate studies or have extended their freelance work into new dance contexts. Further study and career development Students who gain a minimum of 120 credits at Level 4 can apply to have their teaching assessed in order to be eligible for teacher registration with the RAD.
BA (HONS) DANCE EDUCATION At Level 6, you are required to complete two compulsory modules and choose from a range of options including dance analysis, assessment issues in dance, optimising dance performance and dance management. You will also complete a dissertation where you will have the opportunity to choose an interesting and original idea to research. Alongside this, you will also critically explore the philosophical considerations of the nature of the arts in education, debating such issues as objectivity and subjectivity and the dichotomy between mind and body. You will gain knowledge and understanding of some of the major principles and theories of skill acquisition and motor learning, including somatic and performance profiling techniques. Further modules will examine what is meant by an academic discipline and how these disciplines are defined through social constructions, including dance in Higher Education, vocational training and dance in relation to older learners.

CASE STUDIES KAMILLE MULLER
Third Year Student BA (Hons) Ballet Education I am Belgian and come from Luxembourg. I have always been interested in education and having received all my training and passed all my examinations with RAD registered teachers, coming to study at the Royal Academy of Dance was an obvious choice for me. I have enjoyed every part of the training and I have not only expanded my knowledge in the educational field but I have also improved my own dancing and choreographic skills. London is an amazing city, especially when it comes to culture and it’s not as rainy as everybody expects!
34
Looking back on my three years of living in London and studying on the BABE programme, I now feel very well prepared to start my career as a ballet teacher. As the RAD is represented in so many different countries, I am planning to travel abroad to start my career. It is exciting to see how many job opportunities there are when graduating from the BABE programme and I would recommend it to anyone planning a career in dance education.

Second Year Student BA (Hons) Ballet Education Dance gives people opportunities to express themselves and it is for everyone, no matter how old you are or your ability, dance can give you a new lease of life and it brings people together. The Ballet Education programme is one of a kind. It provides the best quality of teacher training, there is a lot of one-to-one time with lecturers and it is very personal. Whilst studying here, I also wanted to further my knowledge in ballet, so having the opportunity to study the
LRAD alongside my programme and go in-depth into teaching the RAD syllabus has been very rewarding. I am currently on placement in my second year and I am enjoying teaching in a variety of settings that I perhaps might not have considered teaching before. When I have qualified, I would ideally like to be teaching curriculum dance in a school whilst also teaching in private dance schools on evenings and weekends.

“ I FEEL THAT I HAVE BECOME MUCH MORE OPENMINDED.”
LAURA RADFORD
First Year Student BA (Hons) Ballet Education I chose to study at the RAD because I felt very welcomed during the open and audition days and knew that I would be supported throughout my studies. I also knew that this was the only place that would provide an outstanding future for myself as a teacher. You are taught by some of the best teachers in ballet education who will push you to your maximum capability and inspire you to be the best dancer and teacher that you can be. Before studying at the RAD, as a dancer, I was very balletorientated. Since beginning the
programme, I have learned to move in a different way through the contemporary technique lessons. This has probably been my biggest challenge so far, but I have learnt that it is good to be pushed outside your comfort zone because it gives you so much more confidence and adaptability as a dancer. Overall, during my time here, I feel that I have become much more open-minded to different dance styles and have widened my knowledge of both dance histories and dance science – all of which will benefit me to a greater extent when I am teaching.

I wanted to enhance my professional practice both as a dancer and a teacher and was eager to find an establishment that would facilitate the best training. The RAD offers a unique experience to train in a vibrant dance environment with the guidance from outstanding professionals. This has enabled me to feel confident that I am offering quality teaching to students.
I am now studying on the PGCE:DT which will allow me to teach across a range of ages from 11-19 years; providing me with more opportunities for the future. The programme is extremely challenging but every milestone reached only makes it more rewarding. My biggest challenge has been teaching students who don’t love dance initially, I have enjoyed changing their perceptions and helping them understand that dance is unique to the individual and is inclusive to all. I look forward to gaining more experience in dance education, working towards becoming Head of Dance and ultimately, continuing to complete a Masters and becoming a Dance Lecturer in the future.

Graduate Master of Arts in Education (Dance Teaching) After completing a dance degree, I found going back to studying as a mature student both stimulating and rewarding. I was eager to continue studying dance, and expanding my knowledge and expertise as a dance teacher. The Masters offered a distance learning programme which was most suitable to my dance teaching career and lifestyle, and offered modules and optional study areas relevant to my teaching context. My biggest challenge was balancing my personal life and work commitments alongside my studies. But, with careful planning and timetabling, as
well as the wonderful support from tutors, this challenge was manageable over the three years. The sense of achievement and success experienced at the end was truly overwhelming. At present, I work in an all-girls independent school teaching dance and whilst studying on the Masters I received a promotion to become Head of Dance within my school. This qualification has clearly facilitated my current teaching career, but I also believe that having this degree will continue to enhance my future career prospects in dance teaching and dance education.
100% OF STUDENTS WERE VERY WELL PREPARED FOR EMPLOYMENT
ALYSIA JARVIS
Student Master of Arts in Education (Dance Teaching) I have worked as a dance teacher in Sydney, Australia for the past 25 years, specialising in RAD ballet, jazz, contemporary and musical theatre. Making the decision to study dance education has been one of the best decisions I ever made and has opened up a huge range of professional opportunities. I completed the BA (Hons) Dance Education in 2013 and am now close to completing my second year of the Masters. Managing a portfolio career, along with a family, is challenging and so I have relished the opportunity to be able to study on a programme that offers flexibility, currency and relevance. There is really no equivalent course available in Australia. Delivery via distance learning allows me the freedom to work
according to my own schedule. The fact that it is practicebased means that current dance based research and pedagogical approaches are linked strongly to my own context, allowing me the opportunity to critically reflect, analyse and improve my own practice. At times I feel I have been pushed beyond my comfort zone but I have become a far better teacher as a result and my students are certainly the beneficiaries of this. I have expanded my teaching practice and now work with students at both a vocational and tertiary level. I have had the opportunity to work as a mentor and consultant across a range of educational platforms and I have developed skills as a teacher-leader that continues to impact positively on my workplace and students.

PROGRAMME BREAKDOWN Graduates from this programme will have passed the RAD Advanced 1 (2013) examination and are unique in being able to use the initials ‘LRAD’ after their names. By undertaking the Licentiate of the Royal Academy of Dance (LRAD), you will complete three modules which increase in demand from a basic knowledge and understanding of RAD syllabus and its use in teaching, to a critical appreciation of current issues in ballet education and training.
LEVEL 4
LEVEL 5
LEVEL 6
In the first year of study, you will gain basic knowledge, understanding and skills in relation to teaching ballet. This module is your initial introduction to the RAD Syllabi, teaching and learning and aims to underpin the core theories that inform future years. It also enables you to gain knowledge and understanding of how the Graded and Vocational Graded vocabulary and settings progress in complexity, provides you with a foundation for future observation tasks and helps to inform your future teaching.
In the second year of study you will increase your knowledge, understanding and skills by assessing the differing aims and requirements of the Graded and Vocational Graded syllabi and examinations. The module will focus on developing your skills in ballet teaching, studying dance for recreational and/or professional training within the context of private sector ballet education and is the link between initial professional training of Intermediate Foundation and Intermediate and the training of the professional dancer. Analysis and understanding of the progression of vocabulary is central to the module and the ability to create non-syllabus exercises with a focus on communication skills to enhance your learning.
In the final year, you consolidate and develop your learning by analysing the needs of students in the final stages of vocational training and preparation for a professional career. You will also review the full spectrum of the syllabus offered by the RAD and be expected to engage in current debates within the UK vocational training sector on meeting the needs of an increasingly diverse dance profession.
The programme involves intensive practical study supported by lectures, presentations, peer teaching and seminars, but does not include practical teaching placements. For this reason, you will need to have some previous ballet teaching experience.

Student Certificate in Ballet Teaching Studies When I made the decision to undertake teacher training, there was no question as to where I wanted to do this. The RAD teachers have been some of the best and most inspiring individuals I’ve met, helping me to become the dancer I am today. By undertaking RAD training, I hope in turn, to encourage young dancers to fulfil their potential too. Having already achieved an undergraduate and postgraduate degree, I was reluctant to leave the professional sphere but the CBTS programme has made it possible to have the best of both worlds.

I have been able to work the parttime learning schedule around my existing working hours, thus allowing me to continue building my career and training towards my remaining vocational exams. In all, this expansion in my professional experience has really helped diversify my opportunities. As a Sports Psychologist working with ballet dancers, the CBTS offers me understanding and insight into the people I am working with, as well as giving me the chance to become an integral part of their training and development in the future.

Self-evaluation tasks have given me the skills to continue to grow and develop as a teacher. This programme also allows students to manage their

You will gain systematic knowledge of the wide range of environments in which dance teaching takes place, regionally, nationally and internationally. The module also covers the expectations and requirements of professional dance teachers, their roles and responsibilities, and current employment opportunities. Key differences between vocational training and broader educational perspectives are also investigated, enabling you to reflect critically on your own dance background and adapt your teaching to a specified context. The module draws on your professional experience to reflect and critically engage with the historical development of dance performance and associated dance training systems as developed by key individuals and organisations. CASE STUDIES CLAIRE WILDERS
Graduate Professional Dancers’ Teaching Diploma Three years ago, I embarked on the RAD’s Professional Dancers' Teaching Diploma. As a former professional dancer, I had taken a detour and had spent the previous eight years working as a diving instructor in Sharm el-Sheikh in Egypt. I chose the PDTD as it acknowledged the experience that I had gained in the course of my own career. I was also able to complete the entire programme over an intensive three months at the RAD in Battersea. So feeling slightly apprehensive, I bid a temporary farewell to my husband, and the cat, and hopped on a plane. Over the next three months I found myself under some fabulous RAD tutors guiding me through the syllabus, as well as learning about modern day teaching approaches. I was also given career advice on the different avenues available to me, such as teaching in primary and secondary schools, working with older adults, and bringing dance into the wider community. Shortly after graduating, we returned to the UK, where I recently teamed up with a fellow dance teacher to set up the Bridge Academy of Performing Arts in Rochester, bringing RAD classes to local children. I continue to teach across the genres, bridging both community dance and private dance schools. Each venture brings its own rewards, and every day brings a new challenge.

“ THE OPPORTUNITIES PROVIDED BY STUDYING PROGRAMMES SUCH AS THE PDPTC ARE A GIFT FOR PROFESSIONAL DANCERS.”
RAD.ORG.UK
ALESSANDRA SPADA
Student Professional Dancers’ Postgraduate Teaching Certificate I started my dance education in Florence and graduated from the John Cranko Schule in Stuttgart, before working with the Ballet Dortmund and Ballet of Flanders. Ever since I started pursuing classical dance as a profession, I often wondered what my next step would be once I finished performing. The uncertainty of this career often made me feel powerless about the timing of my future due to the changing of directions in ballet companies and injuries. Being part of the PDPTC programme gave me the tools to take my life into my
own hands. Taking such a step towards a different career path felt scary at the beginning, but then it taught me to trust my own abilities and knowledge about this art form. Moreover, I discovered the pleasure of studying and learning new skills again. Since starting the programme a lot of new possibilities have opened up for me and I hope that after completing the PDPTC I will be able to find a job as a ballet teacher. Future aspirations are to become an examiner and to open my own ballet school.
LETICIA MUELLER
Graduate Professional Dancers’ Postgraduate Teaching Certificates After a long hiatus from the world of ballet, I chose the PDPTC programme because it provides a critical approach to dance pedagogy and offers a framework for teaching students of all ages which I felt was important to me. The possibility of distance learning combined with a summer intensive study period in Berlin was another ideal aspect and gives the programme a flexibility which suited my personal needs.
The opportunities provided by studying programmes such as the PDPTC are a gift for professional dancers and I was delighted to be able to participate, fully aware of how in the past, academic degrees in dance were not easily attainable for professional ballet dancers of my generation.
I knew it would be challenging to combine work, family and becoming a student again after so many years, however, the support provided during the programme helped me cope with all of these demands.

ABOUT US
STEP INTO DANCE
Since 1920, the Royal Academy of Dance has been one of the world’s most influential dance education organisations.
A partnership between the Jack Petchey Foundation and the Royal Academy of Dance, Step into Dance is the UK's largest fully inclusive secondary school dance programme, providing extra-curricular classes and performance opportunities to 200 mainstream and Special Educational Needs (SEN) schools per year across London and Essex. Since its creation in 2007, the programme has provided high-quality dance education to over 22,000 young people.
Our exams set standards in classical ballet worldwide and we are a global leader in dance education and continuing professional development for dance. We take pride in connecting and inspiring a worldwide community of dance teachers and dance enthusiasts and currently have over 14,000 members in 83 countries. Our ever-increasing programme of outreach work brings dance into diverse communities and our Faculty of Education’s research into how dance contributes to wellbeing has led to the development of specialist training for older learners. As part of our work in inclusive dance we have also introduced RADiate, a project which specialises in providing subsidised dance classes to children on the autism spectrum, including children with moderate to severe and complex learning difficulties, and those who are non-verbal.
Step into Dance is fundamentally committed to the ideals underpinning the programme. These include the promoting and nurturing of high quality dance pedagogy which results in an exciting, unifying and uplifting dance experience available and accessible to all, regardless of background or level of ability. www.stepintodance.org

DANCE FOR LIFELONG WELLBEING
CONTINUING PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT
The RAD’s commitment to lifelong learning and to providing high quality, workplace relevant continuing professional development came together in an innovative research project in 2013, supported by a grant from the Community Learning Innovation Fund. Older adults, who did not normally have access to dance activities, participated in tailored classes, giving dance teachers an opportunity to contribute to the creation of guidance on best practice for working with older learners. The outcomes of this research are shared in the Dance for Lifelong Wellbeing project report.
The RAD is committed to lifelong learning, and our Continuing Professional Development scheme is a reflection of our commitment to this. Our scheme is designed to meet your individual circumstances; activities are offered worldwide with structured, innovative and progressive opportunities to continue your development.
The RAD has continued to offer classes in London, via funding from the Wandsworth Council Lifelong Learning Fund and in 2015, embarked upon a new research project thanks to funding from the Garfield Weston Foundation. The second phase of the Dance for Lifelong Wellbeing project aims to measure the potential impact of a community based dance class on overall daily activity levels, selected physical skills and quality of life in older adults. Staff within the Faculty of Education are keen to continue to investigate the physiological and psychological health of participants for functional independence. This research will also draw on the experiences of the dance teachers involved to enhance the guidance on best practice for working with older learners that was developed during the initial project in 2013. Outcomes from this project will be disseminated by the end of 2016.
Each activity is designed to enhance your skills, extend your knowledge and career opportunities. CPD activities include practical face-to-face workshops and online learning. Face-to-face workshops give you the chance to deepen your understanding of a specific topic and to network with other dance teachers so you can share ideas and experience. We also offer a suite of highly interactive e-learning activities. Our CPD e-Learning has been exclusively designed for dance professionals. It is rich in graphics and audio-visual content which blends a variety of question-types and discussion forums to ensure that you are at the forefront of developments in dance teaching. This means that you can take part in CPD from wherever suits you. When you graduate and become a dance teacher with the RAD, you will often work on a part-time or freelance basis, so you need to ensure that you are at the top of your game and taking advantage of new developments and initiatives in a highly competitive market. CPD will show potential employers that you are a committed professional, ready to take on challenges of changing educational and professional requirements. No matter where you are in the world, how you like to learn, whether you are at Certificate or Masters level, the RAD CPD scheme will support you in your on-going development and further career progression.
