This year’s Structural Timber Awards saw record entries and brought together the industry to celebrate the best use of structural timber in the UK. Mark currently presents the Aviva Premiership Rugby highlights on ITV. Prior to Aviva’s move to ITV in 2013, Mark fronted the Premiership Rugby coverage on ESPN, with Austin Healey. Mark has also hosted Sky Sports Centre on Sky Sports and was the front man of Sky’s BAFTA winning rugby coverage from 1997. He has presented ITV’s flagship show This Morning, teaming up with Kate Thornton and Myleene Klass. Mark is also a regular newspaper pundit on Lorraine Kelly’s sofa on ITV’s Lorraine. Mark has presented several series of ITV2’s I’m A Celebrity Get Me Out of Here Now!, two series’ of the successful nail-biting show Gutted on Home, as well as The Underdog Show with Tara Palmer-Tomkinson on LIVING. He also fronted ITV1’s Boat Race coverage, which was nominated for a Broadcast Award.

NATIONAL PRESIDENT, TIMBER TRADE BENEVOLENT SOCIETY Robert Bruce, Sales Director at MH Southern & Co, joined the timber trade in 1980 when he started work with J T Dove in Newcastle following a four year apprenticeship in the construction industry. He then took up a position as Sales Manager with Newcastle based R & J Ince Timber Merchants, before joining Harcros Timber and finally in 1999, he joined MH Southern & Co. He was appointed to the Board of MH Southern in 2009, when he became Sales Director. Robert has been an active North East TTBS committee member for over 25 years and a member of the Board of Management for more than 15 years. During this period, he has visited many of the beneficiaries on a regular basis, so is fully aware of how important the help that the TTBS provides is to the well-being of them all.

CHIEF EXECUTIVE, STRUCTURAL TIMBER ASSOCIATION Andrew Carpenter, chief executive of the Structural Timber Association (STA), has played an active part in the construction industry for the past 36 years. Most of this time has been spent with Forticrete, part of the international CRH Group, working in sales, marketing and business development roles, as well as focussing on best practice and change management issues. He started working with Construction Excellence in 1998, first as a volunteer Board Member and as chairman of their national ‘Best Practice’ Club Network, before going on to work for the organisation on a full time basis as Business Development Director responsible for Membership, Marketing, Communications & Events, before then acting in a consultancy role until taking up his current role.

Julie is Business Development Director with Radar Communications and has been heavily involved with the 2015 Structural Timber Awards. With appearances on Stars in their Eyes and X-Factor, Julie performs all over the country at private, public and corporate events. Company: Sarah Wigglesworth Architects Project: Mellor Primary School Sarah Wigglesworth Architects’ extension for Mellor Primary School provides a series of exciting and stimulating new spaces based on the school’s ‘Forest School’ ethos and showcases timber at its finest.

Mellor Primary School is a popular and successful school in the Cheshire village of Mellor, close to the Peak District national park. As pupil numbers have grown, Sarah Wigglesworth Architects were commissioned to design an extension to the existing school building, which was originally built in 1995. The low energy building aims to harmonise with its natural setting, using locally sourced natural materials while featuring a striking habitat wall which was designed and built in partnership with the school’s pupils. The extension is in effect a ‘tree house’: a cluster of pitched roof forms set on a deck extending out into the landscape. Tree-like glulam frames support not only the deck but also the roofs internally and canopies externally, making a visual connection between internal and external spaces. The new classroom and library enjoy views into the surrounding tree canopy, and external deck areas can be used as outdoor classroom space as well as for informal play. Cedar shingle cladding reflects the school’s
JUDGES CHOICE AWARD cladding and vertical boarding allows the building to blend well with its semi-rural location. Tree-like glulam frames, echo the surrounding woodland and support not only the deck but also the roofs internally and canopies externally, making an expressive and visual connection between internal and external spaces. The glulam frame forms a strong visual element in the new building and makes a link between the surrounding trees and the functional properties of timber. The glulam superstructure was erected relatively quickly in the space of four days, and the timber cassettes were installed within ten days. The use of offsite fabricated components also reduced site works, and mitigated some health and safety issues associated with more traditional forms of construction. All timber manufacturers were based relatively locally: timber cassettes from McVeigh Offsite in Cheshire, the glulam frame from Constructional Timber in South Yorkshire and joinery by Romiley in Stockport.
Forest School activities and allows the expanded building to sit comfortably in its greenbelt setting. The habitat wall is a timber framework for accommodating different types of biodiverse habitats for birds, insects, small animals and plants. It takes the form of compartments which are filled with a wide variety of recycled and found materials. Sarah Wigglesworth Architects worked closely with the school community during the design development phase. Meetings were held with staff, parents and governors and feedback from the Mellor Pupil Parliament also informed design decisions. Construction of the 226sq m building began in September 2014 and the project was completed in August 2015. Timber was specified as a robust and sustainable material, offering clear benefits in terms of ecological sustainability, structural performance, durability, and long-term maintenance. Just as importantly, the use of timber
reflects the school’s Forest School activities and allows the expanded building to sit comfortably in its greenbelt setting. All timber specified is from well-managed, renewable sources and is FSC and PEFC-certified. The external use of timber is intended to reduce long term maintenance costs for the school. The cedar cladding to the walls and roofs, for example, is a durable and attractive surface that will require minimal maintenance. It has been left untreated, and will weather gradually over time. Untreated timber is inherently recyclable and some of the site waste (such as timber offcuts) was used to fill the habitat wall. Energy consumption is reduced thanks in part to improved airtightness, passive ventilation, good daylighting and a thick layer of insulation, including straw bales to the habitat wall elevation – again following the emphasis on using locally sourced natural materials wherever possible. The site adjoins an area of woodland with tall, mature trees. The western red cedar shingle

The tree-top type classroom dovetails perfectly into Forest School philosophy and the whole eco-inspired extension has already become the focal point of the appreciative village. This imaginative and practical addition to the school proves that, despite the constraint of constant institutional belt-tightening, it is still possible to conceive and deliver a distinctive community building.” The school has also been recognised as a centre of excellence in the wider Forest Schools network, and is being used as an inspirational hub and demonstration project for other schools looking to place the environment at the heart of their learning.

The scheme includes 12 spacious timber frame apartments for people of 55+ years and associated communal facilities which are open to older people living locally, thus promoting use as a community hub. The original Windmill House in Fowey was a concrete, system-built, category-2 sheltered scheme built by Restormel District Council in the 1960s.

KTS, DOVER DISTRICT COUNCIL & JENNER: CASTLE STREET, DOVER
The development of eight affordable apartments on Castle Street, Dover is an outstanding example of collaboration between the local authority, a developer and a specialist contractor. Dover District Council appointed Jenner Ltd to construct the Castle Street Project, with Kingspan Timber Solutions (KTS) providing specialist services to design, manufacture and install the company’s Kingspan TEK® SIP system. The project was the first step towards regenerating the area of St James’ Street, with new retail outlets, restaurants and further houses planned.

Edge Hill is a private house designed to enhance and engage with the rural landscape and aesthetic of the Darras Hall Estate. The main structure is wrapped in a thermally treated, FSC-certified approved hardwood screen, offering warm light to enter into the heart of the house, without views of the neighbours. By using a timber screen, not only as a privacy device, it also borrows the natural rhythm and material of the surrounding woodland. This contemporary home nestles in a challenging deep and narrow plot.

T2 ARCHITECTS: SYMONDS CLOSE
Symonds Close, Winchester provides 12 new timber-framed, Code Level 5, affordable houses for Winchester City Council’s New Homes Delivery Team and was built in just 12 months. The Council had not built any new housing stock in the last 25 years, relying only on provision from registered social landlords. The use of timber frame helped the scheme easily achieve Code Level 5 for energy usage and will mean low energy consumption and lower energy bills for the Council’s tenants.

WORTHING HOMES: MEADOW ROAD
Worthing Homes owned 48 bedsit flats, built in the 1950s, on a site in Meadow Road. The bedsits were out of date in relation to space standards, had poor insulation, energy efficiency and insufficient sound proofing. The cost of maintaining these homes was becoming more and more expensive and the nature of the properties meant that there was an increase in anti-social behaviour. Using a timber frame gave a bespoke feel and finish to the development whilst providing a relatively time-efficient building method.

Kingspan TEK® SIP offered an advanced method of construction, providing superior insulation, structural strength and airtightness. SIP technology has

been developed around composite panel techniques, creating a product with excellent structural and thermal characteristics. SIPs have two parallel faces – oriented strand board (OSB), sandwiching a rigid core of polyurethane (PU) foam, making them lightweight, quick to erect and free from problems of compression shrinkage and cold bridging associated with other forms of construction. Kingspan TEK® was specified for the build because it holds a Green Guide A+ rating for the system’s energy efficient properties including: U-value 0.08 W/sqmK and air changes as low as 0.08/ hr at 50PA. The high thermal performance of the SIP construction results in a low heating load which makes the use of electric storage and panel radiators viable. The efficiency

of the design led to the smallest gas combination boiler being oversized in relation to the heat load. Creating this level of warmth was key for Dover District Council to provide the vulnerable and elderly residents of the building with warm homes whilst also keeping fuel bills low and manageable. The speed of the build was a critical factor to the success of this project. By allowing local people to move into their smaller new homes quickly, larger houses could be made available for families. As a socially responsible organisation, both the speed of build and the enhanced energy performance were of vital importance to Dover District Council. The project was the first step towards regenerating the area of St James’ Street, with new retail outlets, restaurants and further houses planned.

Cobalt Place is part of a wider masterplan for a site in Battersea, south London that also includes a school and Community House for the Salesian monastery of Don Bosco. Cobalt Place comprises 102 apartments split across two five to six storey buildings and two separate townhouses. The structure for both the apartments and townhouses is cross laminated timber (CLT), which has good structural properties and low environmental impact. Large prefabricated CLT panels with pre-cut openings were delivered to site, achieving fast, factory-quality construction.

This Ealing housing scheme used Pinewood Timber’s first ‘Hybrid CLT System’. The hybrid system combines the strength and accuracy of cross laminated timber (CLT) with the cost effectiveness of timber cassettes. This reduced construction time and cost as well as access and disruption on site and using this hybrid system resulted in cost savings of £50,000 and made an unviable site viable by connecting two significant parallel routes into London.

ELLIOTT WOOD PARTNERSHIP: CONTOUR HOUSE
Contour House nestles in the rolling hills of the Peak District National Park and follows the contours of the land to create a curvilinear plan. The house, which is approximately 100 metres long by 10 metres wide, is split into four 25-metre-long blocks and separated by glass links. The building’s main living spaces, with exposed American white oak glulam beams, flitched with stainless steel plates, span the full building width and creates a hybrid member with excellent structural properties and beauty.

Located in an up and coming city centre location of Gloucester, each timber frame apartment at Athelstan House is finished to a high standard, offering two double bedrooms with built in wardrobes, open plan living space with integrated appliances, gas central heating and bike storage. Frame Technologies had only a six-week programme to deliver the structural frame for the three storey apartment block, as the client was keen to get in the building watertight before Christmas 2015.

SHS BURRIDGE ARCHITECTS: TIGH BEAG PRIVATE HOUSING PROJECT OF THE YEAR
Located in the Cairngorms National Park, Tigh Beag is a newbuild low energy house that prioritises natural light and the wellbeing of its occupants. Timber was selected as the main material in response to the context, its construction benefits, environmental qualities and efficiencies. The walls, roof and floors are formed from cross laminated timber (CLT) panels with Accoya cladding. The CLT panels are screwed together, so at the end of the building’s life it can be dismantled and the panels reused or used as biomass fuel.

Sandiway Bank is an exclusive and small gated development of luxury houses. This unique development consisted of five spacious 3,743sq ft homes, set in a quarteracre plots in one of Cheshire’s most popular villages. As some of the design features required walls that reached almost 6m high, SIPs were used along with substantial glulam support to achieve the architects and developer’s requirements. ARUP: WOODCHIP BARN SELF-BUILD PROJECT OF THE YEAR
In collaboration with Arup, students of the Architectural Association created a robotically fabricated Woodchip Barn, using locally source timber. An ambition for the project was to exploit the resisting capacity of beech tree forks in a Vierendeelstyle arching truss. The final 3D model was used to program a 6-axis robotic arm to prepare the tree forks for their specific connection details. The project focused on developing the necessary workflows for utilising complex and irregular pieces of timber generally considered a nuisance in contemporary timber construction.

CARPENTER OAK: SPILLANE HOUSE
Taking inspiration from Carpenter Oak show house, David and Jenny Spillane chose a cutting edge ‘floating frame’, for their home. This unusually shaped oak frame with stainless steel feet, which raises the frame off the ground giving it an elevated feel. Instead of the mortise and tenon joints traditionally used in oak framing the frame incorporates steel flitch plates and pignuts to heighten the contemporary feel of the house. The couple’s core passion for oak led them to the decision to have the frame as a consistent feature throughout the home.
GLOSFORD SIPS: HILLSIDE FARM HOUSE SELF-BUILD PROJECT OF THE YEAR
The construction of Hillside Farm House, is an outstanding example of a self-build project through the collaboration of architect, carpenter, engineer and specialist contractor. The clients, Mr and Mrs Duffy appointed Glosford SIPS to design, engineer and manufacture the SIPS panels which create the structural form of Hillside Farm House. The hybrid structure incorporates a laminated oak frame together with masonry internal structural detailing – combined with a high performance Kingspan TEK ® building envelope.
KINGSPAN INSULATION: YEOMANS’ HOUSE SELF-BUILD PROJECT OF THE YEAR
Stephen and Anita Yeomans’ home is a daring piece of modernist architecture and a perfect example of the sheer versatility of timber construction, seamlessly blending industrial facings with Kingspan TEK® SIP structure. The Kingspan TEK® panels were designed and cut to the project’s specifications by main contractors, Myriad Construction. The lightweight panels and modular construction allowed Myriad Construction to easily cope with the constrictions of the 11 metre-wide plot. The inherently excellent fabric performance of the SIPs ensured the completed building is highly energy efficient.

SELF-BUILD This self-build project is an extensive refurbishment and first floor extension to a 1930’s single storey industrial unit located in a conservation area in central Bristol. PROJECT OF THE YEAR This was an ambitious project involving major reworking of the existing building while being sympathetic to the industrial character and existing fabric of the building. Many cutting edge products were used to realise the homeowners’ vision, such as custom curved glulam beams, timber I-joists, aluminium dovetail timber connectors, helical screw piles and stressed skin roof panels.
POTTON: BAKER HOUSE SELF-BUILD PROJECT OF THE YEAR
Richard and Christine Baker had lived on the Isle of Man for many years and had refurbished properties in various locations on the island but yearned to build their own home for almost 40 years. The building utilises a Kingspan TEK® SIPs system and is 185sqm including the ground and first floor and won the ‘Best Timber Frame’ category in the 2015 Telegraph Homebuilding Awards. The initial design was drawn by Richard himself on the ‘Grand Designs’ CAD software before sending drawings through to Potton to provide a project feasibility study.
SANEI HOPKINS ARCHITECTS: CONTOUR HOUSE SELF-BUILD PROJECT OF THE YEAR
The brief was to design a replacement house for a 1960s bungalow which was open, light and contemporary using high quality traditional materials. It called for stone, natural timber and exposed natural materials internally. The house is set on a sixacre site within the Peak District National Park. The choice of timber as a structural element was an obvious one and timber was introduced for some of the internal finishes including the flooring, doors, stair and bespoke furniture elements.
SIPCO: 40 HILL ROAD SELF-BUILD PROJECT OF THE YEAR
The idea behind the design of 40 Hill Road, Essex was to maximise the light within the property on a small building plot which housed a 1950s bungalow and develop it into a remarkable, contemporary three-storey family home for the Smith family. Open plan living requirements were facilitated using glulam and SIP panels. The complexity of the building design combined with thermal efficiency targets made traditional construction methods difficult to use. Through the use of SIP and glulam construction exacting delivery times based on careful material procurement, production planning and control were achieved.

Our clients wanted a ‘homely’ feel to their dream home but also a high quality working environment, so we proposed natural materials and exposed oak, sympathetically mixed with reclaimed bricks and soft plaster colours. By using oak manufacturing specialist partners, the selection of best seasoned oak for internals, and green oak for external features, ensured the durability and appearance would be optimised. Extreme care taken over the oak feature component junctions made the assembled structures look and feel not only substantial but also robust.

The already compressed timescale to complete the building work was given added incentive due to the imminent arrival of the homeowners’ second child. The specification of custom prefabricated building components

allowed the roof to be installed in just two days. Close collaboration and a transparent working relationship between the client, design team and building contractor ensured that the building was delivered on time and to budget. The new structural frame is built entirely from timber and features six exposed curved glulam roof beams to create a large open plan living, dining and kitchen area. The whole 136m² roof is constructed from eleven lightweight steel sandwich panels that were lifted by crane from the narrow street outside, each one incorporating a 200mm high performance insulating foam core. The use of timber and other lightweight building materials for the new construction meant that minimal reinforcement of the existing foundations was necessary. This was

particularly important since a preexisting underfloor heating system was retained. The ambition for the refurbishment was to achieve the AECB (Association for Environment Conscious Building) Silver Standard and was formally certified on 19th December 2015. The actual measured energy performance of the building is 80% less than the average UK home. These exceptional performance figures demonstrate the high quality standards to which the building has been built demonstrating the skill and knowledge of the builder. The result is a modern open-plan family home that incorporates exposed curved timber beams that gently arc over the large open plan living area, likened by some visitors as being inside the hull of an old timber galleon.

The two-storey, 22m tall engineered timber structure incorporates cross laminated timber (CLT), as the main structural component for the walls, floor and roofing elements, working with the main structural glulam frame.
CULLINAN STUDIO: FLAT PACK PRIMARY SCHOOL This innovative offsite manufactured school was developed from a Cullinan Studio led research collaboration with Smith & Wallwork Structural Engineers, Cundall Environmental Engineers and Peter Gittins & Associates Cost Planners. Using prefabricated timber cassettes to minimise embodied energy, ensure quality, and speed accuracy and erection on site, the modular timber structural frame was simple to fabricate and erect. Columns and beams were in Kerto laminated veneer lumber.
CYGNUM TIMBER FRAME & ARCHITYPE: BURRY PORT COMMUNITY PRIMARY SCHOOL Burry Port Community Primary School, brings together the towns once separate infant and junior schools on one central site, in a design that celebrates Welsh timber and embraces innovation. The prominent newbuild aspects include the first Passivhaus school building in Wales, as well as a separate striking Brettstapelconstructed 100sqm elliptical pod for multi-use purposes, which unites the new and old elements of the school.
EARLE ARCHITECTS: EARLY YEARS CENTRE A newbuild nursery and crèche building measuring just over 211sq m. It was a fast-track, lightweight, low carbon, glulam and structural insulated panel (SIP) constructed building on an occupied urban site designed to provide a calm and settled environment for many of the young children currently being rehoused as part of the massive Aylesbury Estate regeneration scheme. No other material came close in terms of a finished speedily erected structure.
ENGENUITI & B & K STRUCTURES: ESSEX BUSINESS SCHOOL Designed with BDP, the new School comprises of a curved three storey building, a geodesic single storey lecture theatre and winter garden, all of which were constructed from PEFC certified glulam columns, glulam floor beams, wall cassettes and CLT floor deck with ETFE used on the winter garden roof. The building is the UK’s first zero-carbon business school and the use of timber significantly contributed to this exceptional achievement.
GILBERT & GOODE: GREEN BUILD HUB (GBH) The ERDF funded Green Build Hub (GBH) is the brainchild of Cornwall Sustainable Buildings Trust (CSBT) and has been designed, procured and built as an exemplar sustainable building. The two-storey BREEAM ‘Outstanding’ building sits in a prominent position on the Eden Project site and has been designed to incorporate numerous sustainable features. The concertina facade incorporates a series of glazed sections between low impact structural insulated panels (SIPS) to showcase renewable materials in modular walls e.g. straw bales.

JESTICO + WHILES: MOSSBOURNE VICTORIA PARK ACADEMY Jestico + Whiles was appointed to design a new secondary school in Victoria Park Village. The entire school frame is cross laminated timber (CLT), including the walls, floors and roof. When the time comes to recycle the school, the CLT material can be used for energy generation. The use of CLT contributed to the target BREEAM rating of ‘Very Good’.
RODERICK JAMES ARCHITECTS: THE SCHOOLHOUSE The SchoolHouse is a vocational project that enabled pupils to build their own sustainable timber house at the Burlington Danes Academy in London. Much of the timber in the construction is exposed showcasing the sustainable ethos of the project, including the hand crafted structural Douglas Fir (English plantation grown) frame. Breathable recycled newspaper insulation was blown into the timber wall cassette panels and the timber roof panels on site for added sustainability.
SAINT GOBAIN UK & IRELAND: BARTHOLOMEW BARN, THE KING’S SCHOOL, WORCESTER The Bartholomew Barn was built to Saint-Gobain’s Multi-Comfort building standard. Timber was a central part of the construction, as the project was conceived as a contemporary architectural version of a traditional cruck frame barn. The glue laminates were chosen as a modern equivalent, and provided structural spanning capabilities in a simple portal structure. This enabled the overall wall to be thinner than standard masonry or other wall solutions.
SARAH WIGGLESWORTH ARCHITECTS: MELLOR PRIMARY SCHOOL Sarah Wigglesworth Architects’ extension for Mellor Primary School provides a series of exciting and stimulating new spaces based on the school’s ‘Forest School’ ethos. The extension is in effect a ‘tree house’: a cluster of pitched roof forms set on a deck extending out into the landscape. Tree-like glulam frames support not only the deck but also the roofs internally and canopies externally, making a visual connection between internal and external spaces.
SQUIRE AND PARTNERS: DESIGN AND TECHNOLOGY BLOCK, ST JAMES’ SCHOOL Squire and Partners’ approach to the Design and Technology block at St James’ School was to combine a historically referenced crafted timber construction with modern technology, and attempt to create an authentic structure which will inspire the students, and serve the school for years to come. Exposing the timber structure and employing traditional construction methods were an important part of the project.
TP BENNETT: AMESBURY SCHOOL Amesbury’s new building provides over 2100sq ft of internal space and an equivalent area of external decking for use as display or outdoor classroom. The roof structure comprises a two-way spanning grillage of Douglas Fir sections, sheathed with a plywood skin and is supported internally by four slender steel columns. The north end of the building is framed by an external Accoya glulam portal frame with a full height glazed wall behind.

The habitat wall is a timber framework for accommodating different types of biodiverse habitats for birds, insects, small animals and plants. It takes the form of compartments which are filled with a wide variety of recycled and found materials. Timber was specified as a robust and sustainable material, offering clear benefits in terms of ecological sustainability, structural performance, durability, and long-term maintenance. Just as importantly, the use of timber reflects the school’s Forest School activities and allows the expanded building to sit comfortably in its Greenbelt setting. All timber specified is from well-managed, renewable sources and is FSC and PEFC-certified. The

external use of timber is intended to reduce long term maintenance costs for the school. The cedar cladding to the walls and roofs, for example, is a durable and attractive surface that will require minimal maintenance. It has been left untreated, and will weather gradually over time. Untreated timber is inherently recyclable and some of the site waste (such as timber offcuts) was used to fill the habitat wall. The glulam superstructure was erected relatively quickly in the space of four days, and the timber cassettes were installed within ten days. The use of offsite fabricated components also reduced site works, and mitigated some health and safety issues associated with more traditional forms of construction.

The circular design uses a series of interconnecting symmetrical circles to create intimate circular bedroom wings. This minimises corridors and aids close supervision.

Maggie’s Centres are conceived to provide a welcoming ‘home away from home’ – a place of refuge where people affected by cancer can find emotional and practical support. Timber was chosen as the primary building material for its warmth and sculptural qualities, giving the building unique scale, depth and texture. The building comprises 17 symmetrical frames on a 3-metre grid, with a central ‘spine’ defining the line of symmetry. The chosen structural material was laminated veneer lumber (LVL), due to its enhanced strength and stiffness.
KINGSPAN TIMBER SOLUTIONS: ATHERLEIGH PARK HOSPITAL HEALTHCARE PROJECT OF THE YEAR
The 5 Boroughs Partnership is an organisation that provides specialist mental health and learning disability services and associated support for carers around Wigan. Atherleigh Park Hospital mental health facility – designed to accommodate up to 48 inpatients as well as a full outpatient service – used Kingspan TEK® and Kingspan TEK® Cladding for the project. The panels were manufactured to suit the individual project needs creating a thermally efficient envelope including a very large open plan roof space for complex services within a warm roof.

STUDIO 4: MACMILLAN CANCER SUPPORT CENTRE
A wide range of timber including glulam beams was used for the new Macmillan Cancer Support Centre at East Surrey Hospital – Macmillan’s first stand-alone support centre providing specialist help for cancer patients in a friendly, non-clinical environment. The scheme has two curved arc areas plus a spectacular fan-shaped roof that can be seen on approach to the hospital site, signalling the entrance to the building. Materials have been selected for their robustness and longevity with the building achieving a BREEAM rating of Very Good.

WSP PARSONS BRINCKERHOFF: ALDER HEY CHILDREN’S HOSPITAL
Alder Hey Children’s Hospital is the only hospital in a park in Europe, and sets a new benchmark for the delivery of modern healthcare for children. Bespoke, flexible designs were used to create sustainable, energy-efficient solutions throughout the building. Glulam played a huge part in the structure including a five-storey atrium. Glulam was specified due to its exceptionally low mass, high strength and considerable stiffness. A steel framed structure within the atrium was timber clad to give an impression (and nicknamed) the “Treehouse”.

The newly built structure to house the largest Maggie’s Centre in the United Kingdom to date is a single-storey structure covering an area of around 500sq m. The architectural expression is defined by the structure, making the close collaboration between the architects and the structural engineers a critical part of the design process. The centre, designed and engineered by Foster + Partners, reflects the integrated design process that characterises the practice’s work. Timber was chosen as the primary building material for its warmth and sculptural qualities, giving the building unique scale, depth and texture.

The roof rises in the centre to create a mezzanine level, naturally illuminated by triangular roof lights and it is supported by lightweight timber lattice beams. The beams act as natural partitions between different internal areas, visually dissolving the architecture into the surrounding gardens. The design uses laminated veneer lumber (LVL) that gives the structure greater strength, and there is no visible fixing between two timber pieces. Throughout the centre, there is a focus on natural light, greenery and garden views, with a warm material palette. Timber was chosen as the primary building material for its aesthetic and structural properties, as well as cost and carbon efficiency. The materiality of the building is expressed and embedded in its architecture, with timber emerging

as the primary protagonist. The timber beams are designed as trusses that reflect the magnitude of the loads acting on them – any portion that is superfluous to the structural support has been removed. The chosen structural material was Laminated Veneer Lumber, due to its enhanced strength and stiffness when compared with ordinary timber. The trusses are composed of two sheets of LVL with the main grain orientation aligned in the direction of the most severely loaded elements. The building was a gift from the practice to the Maggie’s cancer charity and the project meets Manchester City Council’s target for energy consumption in carbon emissions by incorporating high performance façades and encouraging natural daylight and ventilation throughout the building.

The key issues are planning, availability of affordable land and access to skilled workers.

Located on a former airfield site which will be redeveloped over the next 25OF years, PROJECT THE YEAR the Alconbury Club acts as a welcoming hub for the emerging community of Alconbury Weald. The building’s structure is cross laminated timber (CLT), using a system of 4.5 to 6m wide structural bays. Columns and beams have a constant width, and deeper beams allow for greater void space as required, as in the hall and gym spaces. The Club was built in a single 26-week phase.

ARUP: SKY CENTRAL
Sky has embarked onto redeveloping the former Harrods depository site in Hounslow into their new headquarters, Sky Central. The super fast-track project was to deliver approximately 500,000sq ft. A key element of the Sky Central design is the long span roof. It is one of the largest timber roofs in Europe and consists of deep timber beams supporting a lightweight timber cassette roof deck. The cassettes and skylights were prefabricated offsite and installed in 10.5x3m sections, allowing for a high speed construction.

In partnership with manufacturer, Rubner Holzbau, B & K Structures designed, manufactured and installed a full facade and roof package for five new sound stages at Pinewood Studios – part of the first phase of the expansion and development programme for the studios. The timber cassettes were used for both the facade and roof package and incorporated materials specifically selected to meet the appropriate levels of acoustic, fire safety, thermal inertia performance in one single system.

GLOSFORD SIPS: SEATON JURASSIC VISITOR CENTRE
The development of the Seaton Jurassic Visitor Centre in Devon is an outstanding example of collaboration between a community-led centre and a specialist contractor. Seaton Jurassic Park appointed Glosford SIPS to manufacture and install the company’s high performance Kingspan TEK® SIPS system. BREEAM ‘Very Good’ was a central requirement on the project and the Kingspan products delivered the excellent thermal and airtightness performance that the centre needed in a single operation.

MCVEIGH OFFSITE: AMBLESIDE STUDENT ACCOMMODATION
Delivered for Cumbria University on behalf of Keepmoat Construction, the concept was derived from an ideology of fabric first technology, coupled with a challenging programme. The design was a SIP 175mm panel to the exterior with an internal timber frame. The lightweight structural strength of SIPs allowed large sections of building to be lifted in one piece for speed of erection but the panels could also be erected one at a time by hand where access was restricted.

METSA WOOD: COCKFIELD WINDMILL
Situated in the heart of the Suffolk countryside, the former windmill structure was recently converted to accommodation for holiday lets. This project was unique: a curved rib structure with each rib having a different shape and size to form an ‘inverted boat’. To achieve this, the arch shapes from the Kerto-Q sheets were first cut, then glued and screwed together to form solid arches. Kerto-Q panels were well suited to this because the panels could be cut easily to the shapes required.

MOMENTUM CONSULTING ENGINEERS: THE CAA PAVILION
A temporary pavilion for the Contemporary Applied Arts; the home of British craft, had to be both beautifully handmade and economically simple. The design of the structure uses the unique characteristics of being able to simply and economically layer plywood to form rigid, cranked frames. Four boxes would form each frame, two wall panel boxes and two roof panel boxes. The frame is symmetrical so only two shapes were used to form the whole structure. The design demonstrates the increasing use of plywood to form fast-track, lightweight demountable buildings.

PARAGON OAK: IVERIDGE HALL HEALTH CLUB
A large section of structural green oak frame was used to create an extension for yoga sessions at a health club in Leeds. The oak being a natural material and with each piece being unique, ties together nicely with the philosophy of yoga. The huge oak frame also compliments the club’s ethos of strength and beauty. The frame itself will be very low maintenance. As well as the finished visual impact of the oak frame, it gives those practicing yoga another natural dimension to their experience.

SYLVA: MOTTISFONT WELCOME BUILDING
The project provides new visitor facilities at the entrance to the historic estate of Mottisfont Abbey. The buildings are designed to be highly sustainable and have minimal impact on the site. The choice of timber for both frame, cladding and decking reflect this. The prefabricated spruce and larch cross laminate timber (CLT), glulam and floor cassettes have zero embodied energy and can be dismantled easily at the end of the buildings lifespan, allowing the site to return to its original state.

TONKIN LIU: KINGSTON ANCIENT MARKET PLACE
The Kingston Ancient Market Place and market stalls project is situated in the town centre of Kingston-upon-Thames, consisting of 7,000 sq m of public space, 26 market stalls ranging from fishmongers, butchers, green grocers, bread-makers, to lunchtime food stalls. The hybrid roof and canopy structure uses cross laminated timber (CLT) and was chosen for durability, adaptability, and tactility. Timber was also chosen for its visual reference to Tudor timber structures.

BEST COMMERCIAL PROJECT Company: B & K Structures & Rubner Holzbau Project: Pinewood Studios In partnership with manufacturer, Rubner Holzbau, B & K Structures designed, manufactured and installed a full facade and roof package for five new sound stages at Pinewood Studios. 54
The project was part of the first phase of the expansion and development programme for the studios. The timber cassettes were used for both the facade and roof package of the sound stages and incorporated materials specifically selected to meet the appropriate levels of acoustic, fire safety, thermal inertia performance in one single system.

The timber cassettes installed at Pinewood Studios were carefully designed to combine a number of exacting requirements including heating and cooling specifications, high sound absorption, meeting a variety of climatic requirements, together with more traditional building regulations

such as 60-minutes fire resistance, combined in one highly prefabricated structural solution. The high level of prefabrication guaranteed the cassettes could be constructed two thirds faster than conventional methods of construction, thus saving months on an already condensed programme. The cassettes were rigorously tested to ensure the system could achieve the required quality and efficiency without compromising on sustainability and construction speed. The priorities in the design of the stages included spatial flexibility (clear span volume), accessibility for scenery, equipment, people and vehicle movement, highly flexible lighting grid arrangement and an ability to naturally ventilate along with a high acoustically performing facade and roof design. Extensive research and testing allowed

the products within the cassettes to naturally blend to precisely meet individual design specifications whilst being able to span up to 16m creating clear open spaces. The lightweight timber wall cassettes span vertically up to 14m with intermediate support at 7m on the primary frame.

COMMERCIAL PROJECT OF THE YEAR
Located on a former airfield site which will be redeveloped over the next 25 years, the Alconbury Club acts as a welcoming hub for the emerging community of Alconbury Weald. The brief was to create a 1100 m2 flexible mixed use building, dedicating more than half of its area to community facilities including an events space, a gym and a café/bar with various breakout space options, with the remainder of the space for the developer’s own offices and facilities within the building. The building’s structure is CLT, using a system of 4.5 to 6m wide structural bays. Columns and beams have a constant width, and deeper beams allow for greater void space as required, as in the hall and gym spaces. The Club was built in a single 26-week phase. The Club’s budget constraints were driven largely by lessons learned: the

choice of materials was broadly in line with the Incubator building but sought to build and improve on what had been achieved there. While fully compliant mechanical mode ventilation had to be adopted, improvements to visible service fittings and finishes could be made. The Club provides a new amenity hub at an early stage in the delivery of the masterplan, ensuring good leisure, health and community facilities for the developing community in a flexible, inclusive and welcoming building.

The twostorey, 22m tall engineered timber structure incorporates cross laminated timber (CLT), as the main structural component for the walls, floor and roofing elements, working with the main structural glulam frame.

Exploding the myth that British timber sources aren’t suited to structural uses in buildings, the Centre’s timber frame is constructed substantially of Corsican pine that grew just 30 miles away in Thetford Forest. The BREEAM Outstanding building is a highly sustainable building: its timber structure is expressed in the building’s architecture and the timber and other low impact natural materials dominate the building’s exterior and interior. The cutting-edge low-impact building is one of the UK’s largest certified Passivhaus buildings.
DELUXE DEVELOPERS: CEDAR BARN LOW ENERGY PROJECT OF THE YEAR
This project was specifically built to prove the viability of a fully sustainable timber framed house of the future, to provide not only a zero carbon home but incredible energy saving living. Cedar Barn is the UK’s first Code Level 6 and Passivhaus individual home, built in a traditional style to also benefit from Buildmark, NHBC’s 10 year warranty and insurance. This exemplary project proves the commercial viability of zero carbon homes and far exceeds the Government’s 2016 Zero Carbon target.
GILBERT & GOODE: GREEN BUILD HUB (GBH) LOW ENERGY PROJECT OF THE YEAR
The ERDF funded Green Build Hub (GBH) is the brainchild of Cornwall Sustainable Buildings Trust (CSBT) and has been designed, procured and built as an exemplar sustainable building. The two-storey BREEAM ‘Outstanding’ building sits in a prominent position on the Eden Project site and has been designed to incorporate numerous sustainable features. The concertina facade incorporates a series of glazed sections between low impact structural insulated panels (SIPS) to showcase renewable materials in modular walls e.g. straw bales.

This family home in Jersey shows that creating a low energy property, doesn’t have to mean compromising on sustainable principles. Through the use of timber technology, the dated, poorly insulated bungalow has been transformed into a modern, threebedroom home which meets the requirements of the EnerPHit Standard. The retrofit work includes a sizeable extension and a new roof (creating room for attic bedrooms), are both fabricated from SIPs. The project is an outstanding example of SIP’s ability to deliver excellent fabric first performance to a challenging refurbishment programme.

Sanctum saw a temporary theatre, built entirely from recycled timber, erected within the ruins of Temple Church in the centre of Bristol. The performance space and public artwork showcased the vibrant Bristol community. The entire structural timber frame, cladding and timber flooring was made of reused materials, salvaged from local demolition and refurbishment sites. The structure was temporary in its nature and after dismantling, the primary structural frame was sold to be reused again in local residential construction.
MRA ARCHITECTS: 4 BED ECO HOUSE LOW ENERGY PROJECT OF THE YEAR
Completed in January 2016 and designed to Passivhaus standards. The house is 100% timber frame using all locally sourced materials so delivering an extremely low carbon footprint. It is an uprated 150mm timber kit constructed onsite and clad in Siberian larch rainscreen with high performance doors and windows. The house benefits from passive solar gain and has brise soleil to prevent overheating in summer and primary solar thermal heating to a thermal store.
SAINT GOBAIN UK & IRELAND: BARTHOLOMEW BARN, THE KING’S SCHOOL, WORCESTER LOW ENERGY PROJECT OF THE YEAR
The Bartholomew Barn was built to Saint-Gobain’s Multi-Comfort building standard. Timber was a central part of the construction, as the project was conceived as a contemporary architectural version of a traditional cruck frame barn. The glue laminates were chosen as a modern equivalent, and provided structural spanning capabilities in a simple portal structure. This enabled the overall wall to be thinner than standard masonry or other wall solutions.
SCOTFRAME VAL-U-THERM: MELDRUM HOUSE LOW ENERGY PROJECT OF THE YEAR
The £5 million extension to Meldrum House uses products with a feel for nature and has delivered a unique wedding venue that extends a warm Scottish welcome in an idyllic retreat in Aberdeenshire. The building is the first commercial application of Scotframe Val-U-Therm Plus. This is the latest development of the Val-U-Therm timber building system which was launched in 2011. Val-U-Therm takes the best structural aspects of timber frame and combines this with the thermal performance of SIPS.

SHORTLIST ARUP: WOODCHIP BARN In collaboration with Arup, students of the Architectural Association created a robotically fabricated Woodchip Barn, using locally source timber. An ambition for the project was to exploit the resisting capacity of beech tree forks in a Vierendeelstyle arching truss. The final 3D model was used to program a 6-axis robotic arm to prepare the tree forks for their specific connection details. The project focused on developing the necessary workflows for utilising complex and irregular pieces of timber generally considered a nuisance in contemporary timber construction.
BUROHAPPOLD ENGINEERING: WOLFSON TREE MANAGEMENT CENTRE The Wolfson Tree Management Centre represents one of the latest chapters in BuroHappold Engineering’s rich history of innovative structural timber design. It provides new facilities for Westonbirt Arboretum’s tree management team, including two new buildings constructed largely from timber harvested from the surrounding woodland. A new machine store is formed by 20m spanning ‘green’ timber trusses, constructed using a hybrid of traditional carpentry and modern timber engineering techniques. The adjacent Mess Building is a striking contemporary hybrid timber and steel structure.
ELLIOTT WOOD PARTNERSHIP: CONTOUR HOUSE Contour House nestles in the rolling hills of the Peak District National Park and follows the contours of the land to create a curvilinear plan. The house, which is approximately 100 metres long by 10 metres wide, is split into four 25-metre-long blocks and separated by glass links. The building’s main living spaces, with exposed American white oak glulam beams, flitched with stainless steel plates, span the full building width and creates a hybrid member with excellent structural properties and beauty.
ENGENUITI: THE ESSEX BUSINESS SCHOOL Designed with BDP, the new School comprises of a curved three storey building, a geodesic single storey lecture theatre and winter garden, all of which were constructed from PEFC certified glulam columns, glulam floor beams, wall cassettes and CLT floor deck with ETFE used on the winter garden roof. The building is the UK’s first zero-carbon business school and the use of timber significantly contributed to this exceptional achievement.
EURBAN: VICTORIA PARK VILLAGE SCHOOL BUILDING The new four-storey building accommodates a sports hall and assembly hall which are open for community use by local residents. Constructed using cross laminated timber (CLT) enabled a speedier construction programme and relieving budget pressures. CLT was selected for the superstructure as it offered a cost-effective and sustainable solution. As the principal funder, Hackney Council had high aspirations for sustainability and strongly supported the use of CLT. The entire school frame is timber including the walls, floors and roof.

SMITH + WALLWORK: FLAT-PACK PRIMARY SCHOOL This offsite manufactured school was developed from a Cullinan Studio led research collaboration with Smith & Wallwork Structural Engineers, Cundall Environmental Engineers and Peter Gittins & Associates Cost Planners. Using pre-fabricated timber cassettes to minimise embodied energy, ensure quality, and speed accuracy and erection on site, the modular timber structural frame was simple to fabricate and erect. Working with Stewart Milne Timber Systems, a kit of structural timber elements were developed that can be adapted to suit the site and the building’s users.
THORNTON TOMASETTI: ST CLARE’S COLLEGE The structural engineering of the new residences and art block at St Clare’s College went beyond the brief to provide a world class educational facility. WSP PARSONS BRINCKERHOFF: ALDER HEY CHILDREN’S HOSPITAL Alder Hey Children’s Hospital is the only hospital in a park in Europe, and sets a new benchmark for the delivery of modern healthcare for children. Bespoke, flexible designs were used to create sustainable, energy-efficient solutions throughout the building. Glulam played a huge part in the structure including a five-storey atrium. Glulam was specified due to its exceptionally low mass, high strength and considerable stiffness. A steel framed structure within the atrium was timber clad to give an impression (and nicknamed) the “Treehouse”.

Ranked second in the country for research programmes, it was essential that the business school’s new building reflected the University’s vision for growth, excellence and sustainability. Designed with architects BDP, the new School comprises of a three-storey main building, single-storey lecture theatre and a winter garden in an ‘Eden Project’ style dome. The building features a range of innovative sustainable elements including structural timber for the superstructure, a green sedum roof and photovoltaic cells. The curved timber frame and timberclad main building is shaped so that it benefits from natural day light and

ventilation. The roof of the business school is covered in photovoltaics, which take full advantage of the south orientation in order to provide renewable energy for a combined heat and power installation. This will enable the net export of energy to offset carbon emissions from the building. The lecture theatre is formed through a geodesic structure â&#x20AC;&#x201C; comprising glulam, steel nodes, CLT and wall cassettes. The wall cassette panels were assembled between the raking glulam columns. Standard sized Larch glulam beams were double glued together to achieve the long curved members. At the heart of the development, is the winter garden with an Ethylene Tetra Fluoro Ethylene (ETFE)-clad timber roof, which acts as an environmental buffer zone, supporting the passive ventilation and heating strategy of the three-storey

building whilst also creating a stunning central gathering space. The use of prefabricated glulam columns, glulam floor beams and CLT floor decks, meant that large structural elements were delivered to site on a just-in-time schedule ready for assembly, minimising health and safety issues and reducing the crane loads required for the erection programme. Using timber also helps to save energy over the life of the building, as its cellular structure provides outstanding thermal insulation: 15 times better than concrete, 400 times better than steel and 1,700 times better than aluminium. The use of timber on this innovative education building has significantly contributed to it becoming the UKâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s first zero-carbon business school and achieving its aim of a BREEAM Excellent rating.

Cobalt Place is part of a wider masterplan for a site in Battersea, south London that also includes a school and Community House for the Salesian monastery of Don Bosco. Cobalt Place comprises 102 apartments split across two five to six storey buildings and two separate townhouses. The structure for both the apartments and townhouses is cross laminated timber (CLT), which has good structural properties and low environmental impact. Large prefabricated panels with pre-cut openings were delivered to site, achieving fast, factory-quality construction.

This innovative offsite manufactured school was developed from a Cullinan Studio led research collaboration with Smith & Wallwork Structural Engineers, Cundall Environmental Engineers and Peter Gittins & Associates Cost Planners. Using pre-fabricated timber cassettes to minimise embodied energy, ensure quality, and speed accuracy and erection on site, the modular timber structural frame was simple to fabricate and erect. The GlaxoSmithKline, Carbon Neutral Laboratory of Sustainable Chemistry for The University of Nottingham is the first carbon neutral laboratory in the UK and one of the first laboratories to be designed to BREEAM Outstanding standards. The two-storey, 22m tall engineered timber structure is located on the Nottingham University’s Jubilee Campus and incorporates cross laminated timber (CLT), as the main structural component for the walls, floor and roofing elements, working with the main structural glulam frame.

Maggie’s Centres are conceived to provide a welcoming ‘home away from home’ – a place of refuge where people affected by cancer can find emotional and practical support. The building comprises 17 symmetrical frames on a 3-metre grid, with a central ‘spine’ defining the line of symmetry. Timber was chosen for the scheme for its good durability characteristics when placed in an atmosphere with high moisture content and temperatures. The latticed glulam structural timber roof limits the environmental impact of the scheme by ensuring that the pool can run at the required internal temperatures, while insulating against heat loss.

MABER: THE KINGS CE
The Kings CE is the largest school in the UK built using structural insulated panels (SIPs). A £13 million project and the final school out of a batch of eight designed by architects Maber using the timber panellised i-SIP System. i-SIP proved to be the sustainable design choice, saving a whopping 179,000 kg in embodied carbon over the original specification using steel and masonry. Using scaffoldless erection and a small team of installation operatives, the three-storey school covering 7318sq m was built in just 11 weeks.

RODERICK JAMES ARCHITECTS LLP: THE SCHOOLHOUSE
The SchoolHouse is a vocational project that enabled pupils to build their own sustainable timber house at the Burlington Danes Academy in London. Much of the timber in the construction is exposed showcasing the sustainable ethos of the project, including the hand crafted structural Douglas fir (English plantation grown) frame. Breathable recycled newspaper insulation was blown into the timber wall cassette panels and the timber roof panels on site for added sustainability.

SHEDKM: hoUSe
hoUSe is a pioneering newbuild, flexible property that can be configured according to buyers’ preference, budget and lifestyle. Appointing RIBA-registered studio, shedkm to design a housing concept unlike any other, the first hoUSes were then constructed offsite by SIG Building Systems as a series of volumetric timber-framed shells that are delivered to site complete and only require a ‘zip-up’ process and connection of services. The timber-based construction is relatively lightweight, therefore reducing the size of foundations.

STUDIO4: THE EAST SURREY MACMILLAN CANCER SUPPORT CENTRE
The East Surrey Macmillan Cancer Support Centre has been developed through a partnership between Surrey and Sussex Healthcare NHS Trust and Macmillan Cancer Support. The scheme has two curved elements. The front arc is the public-facing section of the building which contains the entrance, reception, office, activity hall and large open plan information area. The roof of this element is a curved, zinc monopitch with overhanging eaves. The spectacular fan-shaped roof can be seen on approach to the hospital site, signalling the entrance to the building.

ARCHITECT OF THE YEAR Company: Foster + Partners Project: Maggie’s Centre The central idea behind the new Maggie’s Centre in Manchester was to create a welcoming space for cancer patients that is homely, uplifting and provides a place of refuge and diversion. 78
The newly built structure to house the largest Maggie’s Centre in the United Kingdom to date is a single-storey structure covering an area of around 500sq m. The architectural expression is defined by the structure, making the close collaboration between the architects and the structural engineers a critical part of the design process. The centre, designed and engineered by Foster + Partners, reflects the integrated design process that characterises the practice’s work. Timber was chosen as the primary building material for its warmth and sculptural qualities, giving the building unique scale, depth and texture.

The roof rises in the centre to create a mezzanine level, naturally illuminated by triangular roof lights and it is supported by lightweight timber lattice beams. The beams act as natural partitions between different internal areas, visually dissolving the architecture into the surrounding gardens. The design uses laminated veneer lumber (LVL) that gives the structure greater strength, and there is no visible fixing between two timber pieces. Throughout the centre, there is a focus on natural light, greenery and garden views, with a warm material palette. Timber was chosen as the primary building material for its aesthetic and structural properties, as well as cost and carbon efficiency. The materiality of the building is expressed and embedded in its architecture, with timber emerging

as the primary protagonist. The timber beams are designed as trusses that reflect the magnitude of the loads acting on them – any portion that is superfluous to the structural support has been removed. The chosen structural material was Laminated Veneer Lumber, due to its enhanced strength and stiffness when compared with ordinary timber. The trusses are composed of two sheets of LVL with the main grain orientation aligned in the direction of the most severely loaded elements. The building was a gift from the practice to the Maggie’s cancer charity and the project meets Manchester City Council’s target for energy consumption in carbon emissions by incorporating high performance façades and encouraging natural daylight and ventilation throughout the building.

Castleoak’s development for Abbeyfield at Winnersh pushes the boundaries of timber frame property design, manufacturing and construction and is the UK’s first circular specialist dementia care home. Timber frame was the central construction method to create this specialist care home in a unique two storey, four-circle design that didn’t require any traditional brick/block construction. The circular design uses a series of interconnecting symmetrical circles to create intimate circular bedroom wings. This minimises corridors and aids close supervision.

Windmill House is Ocean Housing’s newbuild, mixed-tenure scheme developed on the site of the original 1960s sheltered scheme in Fowey, Cornwall. The scheme includes 12 spacious timber frame apartments for people of 55+ years and associated communal facilities which are open to older people living locally, thus promoting use as a community hub. The original Windmill House in Fowey was a concrete, system-built, category-2 sheltered scheme built by Restormel District Council in the 1960s.

In partnership with manufacturer, Rubner Holzbau, B & K Structures designed, manufactured and installed a full facade and roof package for five new sound stages at Pinewood Studios – part of the first phase of the expansion and development programme for the studios. The timber cassettes were used for both the facade and roof package and incorporated materials specifically selected to meet the appropriate levels of acoustic, fire safety, thermal inertia performance in one single system.

Sky has embarked onto redeveloping the former Harrods depository site in Hounslow into their new headquarters, Sky Central. The super fast-track project was to deliver approximately 500,000sq ft. A key element of the Sky Central design is the long span roof. It is one of the largest timber roofs in Europe and consists of deep timber beams supporting a lightweight timber cassette roof deck. The cassettes and skylights were prefabricated offsite and installed in 10.5x3m sections, allowing for a high speed construction.

Exploding the myth that British timber sources aren’t suited to structural uses in buildings, the Centre’s timber frame is constructed substantially of Corsican pine that grew just 30 miles away in Thetford Forest. The BREEAM Outstanding building is a highly sustainable building: its timber structure is expressed in the building’s architecture and the timber and other low impact natural materials dominate the building’s exterior and interior. The cutting-edge low-impact building is one of the UK’s largest certified Passivhaus buildings.

The centre aims to create a research culture for the 21st century in which the optimisation of sustainability is a key competence for all chemists and the understanding of new ways of working for minimum carbon impact are transferred back to into pharmaceutical research labs. It is also the first carbon neutral laboratory in the UK and one of the first laboratories to be designed to BREEAM Outstanding standards. Incorporating the latest sustainable technologies, the laboratory will be carbon-neutral over its lifetime thanks in part to the natural materials used in its construction along with the range of renewable sources which shall be used to power the facility.

The glulam columns of 500mm x 500m, weighing up to 1.5 tonnes, and 960mm deep glulam beams with maximum spans of 10.0m, trap almost 1,600 tonnes of carbon extracted from the atmosphere through the process of sequestration and tree growth. Four large prefabricated glulam and CLT ‘horns’ were erected on the roof of the structure to provide natural ventilation to the building. The horns sit at a 45 degree angle cantilever outside

the base, rising almost 10m above the main roof. Weighing approximately 11 tonnes each, the horns were assembled at ground level with M&E already installed, and had to be designed to be lifted horizontally and vertically, which also reduced working at height.

Glulam was specified due to its exceptionally low mass, high strength and considerable stiffness. A steel framed structure within the atrium was timber clad to give an impression (and nicknamed) the “Treehouse”.
G FRAME & MORRISON CONSTRUCTION: KINTORE MIDMILL PRIMARY CONTRACTOR OF THE YEAR
Kintore Midmill Primary School is a newbuild 100m x 100m U-shaped school building, comprising a split level glulam framed design taking into account the flow, movement and usage of the spaces plus a new cross laminated (CLT) timber sports hall. Timber was specified as a central part of the design of the building partly for its lower construction costs and ease of use. It will enhance the aesthetics and environment of the building adding to the learning experience of the children.

GILBERT & GOODE: GREEN BUILD HUB
The ERDF funded Green Build Hub (GBH) is the brainchild of Cornwall Sustainable Buildings Trust (CSBT) and has been designed, procured and built as an exemplar sustainable building. The two-storey BREEAM ‘Outstanding’ building sits in a prominent position on the Eden Project site and has been designed to incorporate numerous sustainable features. The concertina facade incorporates a series of glazed sections between low impact structural insulated panels (SIPS) to showcase renewable materials in modular walls e.g. straw bales.

KEEPMOAT: AMBLESIDE STUDENT ACCOMMODATION
Delivered for Cumbria University on behalf of Keepmoat Construction, the concept was derived from an ideology of fabric first technology, coupled with a challenging programme. The design was a SIP 175mm panel to the exterior with an internal timber frame. The lightweight structural strength of SIPs allowed large sections of building to be lifted in one piece for speed of erection but the panels could also be erected one at a time by hand where access was restricted.
LENDLEASE CONSTRUCTION: COBALT PLACE CONTRACTOR OF THE YEAR
Cobalt Place is part of a wider masterplan for a site in Battersea, south London that also includes a school and Community House for the Salesian monastery of Don Bosco. Cobalt Place comprises 102 apartments split across two five to six storey buildings and two separate townhouses. The structure for both the apartments and townhouses is cross laminated timber (CLT), which has good structural properties and low environmental impact. Large prefabricated panels with pre-cut openings were delivered to site, achieving fast, factory-quality construction.

MORGAN SINDALL: GSK LABORATORY CONTRACTOR OF THE YEAR
The GlaxoSmithKline, Carbon Neutral Laboratory of Sustainable Chemistry for The University of Nottingham is the first carbon neutral laboratory in the UK and one of the first laboratories to be designed to BREEAM Outstanding standards. The twostorey, 22m tall engineered timber structure incorporates cross laminated timber (CLT), as the main structural component for the walls, floor and roofing elements, working with the main structural glulam frame.

RG CARTER: ALCONBURY WEALD CLUB
Located on a former airfield site which will be redeveloped over the next 25 years, the Alconbury Club acts as a welcoming hub for the emerging community of Alconbury Weald. The buildingâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s structure is cross laminated timber (CLT), using a system of 4.5m to 6m wide structural bays. Columns and beams have a constant width, and deeper beams allow for greater void space as required in the hall and gym spaces. The Club was built in a single 26-week phase.

SIR ROBERT MCALPINE: PINEWOOD STUDIOS
Delivered by Robert McAlpine in partnership with Rubner Holzbau and B & K Structures, the project called for the design, manufacture and installation of a full facade and roof package for five new sound stages at Pinewood Studios â&#x20AC;&#x201C; part of the first phase of the expansion and development programme for the studios. The timber cassettes were used for both the facade and roof package and incorporated materials specifically selected to meet the appropriate levels of acoustic, fire safety, thermal inertia performance in one single system.
WILLMOTT DIXON: VICTORIA PARK VILLAGE CONTRACTOR OF THE YEAR
The new four-storey building accommodates a sports hall and assembly hall which are open for community use by local residents. Constructed using cross laminated timber (CLT) enabled a speedier construction programme and relieving budget pressures. CLT was selected for the superstructure as it offered a cost-effective and sustainable solution. As the principal funder, Hackney Council had high aspirations for sustainability and strongly supported the use of CLT. The entire school frame is timber including the walls, floors and roof.

The result is a three-storey, deep plan building with floor to ceiling heights between 3.5m and 4.5m, creating a feeling of volume and airiness. Sky Central features a series of ‘plug in’ mezzanines, ramps and stairs in steel and cross laminated timber (CLT). These create the primary form of vertical circulation, enhancing staff interaction and chance encounters – these elements are a key part of the design brief, along with the use of natural materials, to build a modern workplace with focus on the well-being of Sky’s employees. The timber cassette roof was developed with Mace and their subcontractors as the fastest option. The prefabricated units allowed for the more complicated elements, such as dressing of upstands and installation of roof lights, to be manufactured and completed offsite

in a controlled environment. Onsite, the panels were lifted in large sections and simply screwed to the glulam with site joints in the membranes. The use of timber allowed for the roof to have no structural joints despite its large size due to the thermal stability of the material. Sky Central was delivered under a design and build contract. Arup was novated to Mace and worked with them and the architects PLP to deliver this project quickly. The key issues of flexibility and sustainability were explored with the client at concept stage and timber was proposed for various elements. The team continuously learnt from the Sky Believe in Better Building and other smaller projects on the Sky Campus which were experimenting with the use of timber.

For the first time, as part of this campaign, Kingspan opened the doors of its Selby Kingspan TEK® factory to construction professionals to engage directly with architects and specifiers. This included CPD presentations and as each event was oversubscribed, more dates had to be added to the programme. The on-going campaign is not about one product or system but an integrated marketing strategy to position Kingspan Timber Solutions as a market leader.
MEDITE SMARTPLY: SMARTPLY OSB CAMPAIGN As the industry continues to demand high quality products, the OSB sector has seen little change. SMARTPLY looked to address this by responding to market demand for a high quality board which can be used for an even greater variety of applications and push the boundaries of OSB manufacturing. The campaign communicated the fact that OSB customers had asked for a better product and that SMARTPLY has listened, creating the first genuine product innovation in the OSB sector for many years.

METSÄ WOOD: PLAN B CAMPAIGN
Metsä Wood started a digital marketing campaign in February 2015 called Plan B to explore the possibilities and challenge pre-conceptions of timber construction. They wanted to educate its key target audience: architects, engineers, contractors and related professions, showing them how engineered wood products – in particular Kerto LVL – should be considered in all construction projects ahead of steel and concrete. The idea took some of the most world’s iconic buildings (e.g the Empire State Building) and showed how to construct them using timber.

Alumasc Facade Systems developed a new innovative facade solution designed specifically for the structural timber sector – the Alumasc Ventilated System (AVS). The system is an engineered ventilated facade solution designed to promote the flow of air to eliminate condensation build-up within the structural frame. AVS provides a solution for the requirements and guidelines set out by both the NHBC and TRADA. Elastegrity is a new design system within engineering and architecture – this includes batteryHelix. batteryHelix is the familiar single-layer latticeshell barrel-vault structural form, but utilises ‘energy’ for its structural integrity rather than ‘forces’ and focuses on resilience and stiffness, rather than strength. Unlike a conventional barrel-vault it requires no trusses, ties or buttresses, it is ‘self-stressed’ allowing it to be lightly supported on legs. batterHelix challenges conventional thinking in mechanics and was designed by its inventor Stewart Macpherson as a solution for an ultra-lightweight roof system.
MACE: SKY CENTRAL PIONEER OF THE YEAR
Sky has embarked onto redeveloping the former Harrods depository site in Hounslow into their new headquarters, Sky Central. The super fast-track project was to deliver approximately 500,000sq ft. A key element of the Sky Central design is the long span roof. It is one of the largest timber roofs in Europe and consists of deep timber beams supporting a lightweight timber cassette roof deck. The cassettes and skylights were prefabricated offsite and installed in 10.5x3m sections, allowing for a high speed construction.

PIONEER This self-build project is an extensive refurbishment and first floor extension to a 1930’s single storey industrial unit located in a conservation area in central OF Bristol. THE YEAR This was an ambitious project involving major reworking of the existing building while being sympathetic to the industrial character and existing fabric of the building. Many cutting edge products were used to realise the homeowners’ vision, such as custom curved glulam beams, timber I-joists, aluminium dovetail timber connectors, helical screw piles and stressed skin roof panels.
PLP ARCHITECTURE: OAKWOOD TIMBER TOWER PIONEER OF THE YEAR
The Oakwood Timber Tower is in part a response to this simple question. Designed in collaboration with Michael H. Ramage and Rob Foster of Cambridge University Centre for Natural Material Innovation & Structures, Simon Smith of Simon and Wallwork Engineers and Ron Bakker, Kevin Flanagan, and Skirmantas Simniskis of PLP Architecture, the concept design has set a new standard for structural timber. The showcase of this design pushes the limit of what is possible with the use of cross laminated timber technology in design and build.
RODERICK JAMES ARCHITECTS LLP: THE SCHOOLHOUSE PIONEER OF THE YEAR
The SchoolHouse is a vocational project that enabled pupils to build their own sustainable timber house at the Burlington Danes Academy in London. Much of the timber in the construction is exposed showcasing the sustainable ethos of the project, including the hand crafted structural Douglas fir (English plantation grown) frame. Breathable recycled newspaper insulation was blown into the timber wall cassette panels and the timber roof panels on site for added sustainability.
URBAN SPLASH/SHEDKM: hoUSe PIONEER OF THE YEAR
hoUSe is a pioneering newbuild, flexible property that can be configured according to buyers’ preference, budget and lifestyle. Appointing RIBA-registered studio, shedkm to design a housing concept unlike any other, the first hoUSes were then constructed offsite by SIG Building Systems as a series of volumetric timber-framed shells that are delivered to site complete and only require a ‘zip-up’ process and connection of services. The timber-based construction is relatively lightweight, therefore reducing the size of foundations.
ZEDFACTORY: THE ZERO BILLS HOME PIONEER OF THE YEAR
The Zero Bills Home demonstrate how beautiful, cost effective, low carbon homes can be built at commercial scale. The home was designed by RIBA-award winning architects ZEDfactory and built at the BRE Innovation Park. The system combines an energy efficient modular timber/steel frame. An oversized semi-balloon frame method uses lightweight framing members and studs to carry an equal distribution of the vertical and compressive loads. The house is set to be one of the first homes assessed under BRE’s new Home Quality Mark.

ARUP: WOODCHIP BARN
In collaboration with Arup, students of the Architectural Association created a PROJECT robotically fabricated Woodchip Barn, using locally source timber. An ambition for OF THE YEAR the project was to exploit the resisting capacity of beech tree forks in a Vierendeelstyle arching truss. The final 3D model was used to program a 6-axis robotic arm to prepare the tree forks for their specific connection details. The project focused on developing the necessary workflows for utilising complex and irregular pieces of timber generally considered a nuisance in contemporary timber construction.

The GlaxoSmithKline, Carbon Neutral Laboratory of Sustainable Chemistry for The University of Nottingham is the first carbon neutral laboratory in the UK and one of the first laboratories to be designed to BREEAM Outstanding standards. The two-storey, 22m tall engineered timber structure incorporates cross laminated timber (CLT), as the main structural component for the walls, floor and roofing elements, working with the main structural glulam frame.
BROWN & BROWN ARCHITECTS: THE PORTSOY BOATBUILDING CENTRE PROJECT OF THE YEAR
Located within the historic harbour of Portsoy, North-East Scotland. The building was conceived as a warm timber building slotted inside a hard stone skin. In addition to being constructed from timber, the building is also heated by wood, with a large workshop stove the only heating source, burning all waste products from the client’s boatbuilding activities. As an organisation focused on boatbuilding, the selection of timber as the primary material allowed the client to engage with the project on a much greater level.
CASTLEOAK: ABBEYFIELD PROJECT OF THE YEAR
Castleoak’s development for Abbeyfield at Winnersh pushes the boundaries of timber frame property design, manufacturing and construction and is the UK’s first circular specialist dementia care home. Timber frame was the central construction method to create this specialist care home in a unique two storey, four-circle design that didn’t require any traditional brick/block construction. The circular design uses a series of interconnecting symmetrical circles to create intimate circular bedroom wings. This minimises corridors and aids close supervision.

CYGNUM TIMBER FRAME: THE ENTERPRISE CENTRE, THE UNIVERSITY OF EAST ANGLIA
Exploding the myth that British timber sources aren’t suited to structural uses in PROJECT buildings, the Centre’s timber frame is constructed substantially of Corsican pine OFbuilding THE YEAR that grew just 30 miles away in Thetford Forest. The BREEAM Outstanding is a highly sustainable building: its timber structure is expressed in the building’s architecture and the timber and other low impact natural materials dominate the building’s exterior and interior. The cutting-edge low-impact building is one of the UK’s largest certified Passivhaus buildings.
EAST ARCHITECTURE, LANDSCAPE URBAN DESIGN: SACRED HEART PRIMARY SCHOOL PROJECT OF THE YEAR
The £1.8 million project includes an assembly hall, admin spaces, kitchen and entrance hall. Timber was used to make an intimate, warm and friendly space, responding to a brief aimed at enhancing the everyday experience for the children. The use of glulam beams provided an excellent strength to weight ratio. It also aided to making the spaces feel warm and comfortable, avoiding the austere look of steel. Heraklith (wood wool) acoustic insulation panels applied to the top half of the hall provide excellent acoustic performance.

FOSTER + PARTNERS: MAGGIE’S CENTRE
Maggie’s Centres are conceived to provide a welcoming ‘home away from home’ – a place of refuge where people affected by cancer can find emotional and practical support. Timber was chosen as the primary building material for its warmth and sculptural qualities, giving the building unique scale, depth and texture. The building comprises 17 symmetrical frames on a 3-metre grid, with a central ‘spine’ defining the line of symmetry. The chosen structural material was laminated veneer lumber (LVL), due to its enhanced strength and stiffness.
GILBERT & GOODE: GREEN BUILD HUB PROJECT OF THE YEAR
The ERDF funded Green Build Hub is the brainchild of Cornwall Sustainable Buildings Trust (CSBT) and has been designed, procured and built as an exemplar sustainable building. The two-storey BREEAM ‘Outstanding’ building sits in a prominent position on the Eden Project site and has been designed to incorporate numerous sustainable features. The concertina facade incorporates a series of glazed sections between low impact structural insulated panels (SIPS) to showcase renewable materials in modular walls e.g. straw bales.
GLENN HOWELLS ARCHITECTS: STIHL TREETOP WALKWAY PROJECT OF THE YEAR
The walkway is situated at Westonbirt Arboretum, Gloucestershire and provides stunning new views over the landscape, in particular the ancient woodlands of Silk Wood and across The Downs. At almost 300m in length it is the longest structure of its kind in the UK. The walkway is a hybrid timber and steel structure. Larch was selected as the principal material for the walkway, given its durability and attractive colour, with Scottish larch selected for the decking and handrail.

JESTICO + WHILES: MOSSBOURNE VICTORIA PARK ACADEMY
Jestico + Whiles was appointed to design a new secondary school in Victoria Park PROJECT Village. The entire school frame is cross laminated timber (CLT), including the walls, OF THE YEAR floors and roof. When the time comes to recycle the school, the CLT material can be used for energy generation. The use of CLT contributed to the target BREEAM rating of ‘Very Good’.
LENDLEASE CONSTRUCTION: COBALT PLACE PROJECT OF THE YEAR
Cobalt Place is part of a wider masterplan for a site in Battersea, south London that also includes a school and Community House for the Salesian monastery of Don Bosco. Cobalt Place comprises 102 apartments split across two five to six storey buildings and two separate townhouses. The structure for both the apartments and townhouses is cross laminated timber (CLT), which has good structural properties and low environmental impact. Large prefabricated panels with pre-cut openings were delivered to site, achieving fast, factory-quality construction.

SIMONS GROUP: GSK/LOW CARBON FACILITY
This project has been the culmination of four years of research and theoretical application for Simons and GSK towards answering the question: “Can a pharmaceutical facility achieve carbon neutrality?” The main structure comprises a glulam frame, the first floor and roof are from cross laminated timber (CLT) with wall panels made from hemp-based panels. The project has resulted in 1000t CO2 less emissions during construction than a conventional build and will create an annual reduction of 17t CO2 over the building’s lifespan.
THORNTON TOMASETTI: ST CLARE’S COLLEGE PROJECT OF THE YEAR
The structural engineering of the new residences and art block at St Clare’s College went beyond the brief to provide a world class educational facility. An innovative application of cross laminated timber (CLT) was carefully chosen for the structure, resulting in a lightweight, flexible, adaptable range of buildings that could easily be revised and relocated to suit the changes in environment, without compromising client expectations of the architectural quality of the scheme. The structural design is simple and repetitive and the detailing uncomplicated.

The Hub was designed to protect the timber from weather erosion and to be dismantled, rather than demolished, at the end of its useful life. This lowers the overall environmental impact by reducing the consumed energy in its construction and mitigating energy consumption from disposal.
Glulam beams were specified for the structural components instead of steel or concrete as they typically require between 30-50% of the production energy. Timber cladding was utilised for the faรงade as it has a lower embodied energy than other feasible solutions. Timber frames permit for insulation within the panels increasing the quantity of insulation in comparison to steel or concrete. This reduces the level of energy consumed to heat the structure reducing energy consumption and building running costs.
This was a hugely successful project for all of those involved. It was ultimately delivered on time, to budget with zero reportable accidents and virtually defect free. This was all achieved by a team of apprentices with an average age of 27. It is an exemplar project with over 100 collaborators including: consultants, contractor, sub-contractors, suppliers and stakeholders, with many involved from the early concept designs over two years before the project commenced onsite.

The idea behind the design of 40 Hill Road, Essex was to maximise the light within the property on a small building plot which housed a 1950s bungalow and develop it into a remarkable, contemporary three-storey family home for the Smith family. Open plan living requirements were facilitated using glulam and SIP panels. The complexity of the building design combined with thermal efficiency targets made traditional construction methods difficult to use. Through the use of SIP and glulam construction exacting delivery times based on careful material procurement, production planning and control were achieved.

BEST USE OF SOLID WOOD The Essex Business School has a reputation for excellent teaching, ground-breaking research and exciting business collaborations – and now timber architecture. The new School comprises of a three-storey main building, single-storey lecture theatre and a winter garden in an ‘Eden Project’ style dome. The curved timber frame and timber-clad main building is shaped so that it benefits from natural day light and ventilation. The lecture theatre is formed through a geodesic structure – comprising glulam, steel nodes, cross laminated timber (CLT) and wall cassettes.
The use of prefabricated glulam columns, glulam floor beams and CLT floor decks, meant that large structural elements were delivered to site on a just-in-time schedule ready for assembly, minimising health and safety issues and reducing the crane loads required for the erection programme. Using timber also helps to save energy over the life of the building, as its cellular structure provides outstanding thermal insulation: 15 times better than concrete, 400 times better than steel and 1,700 times better than aluminium. The use of timber on this innovative education building has significantly contributed to it becoming the UK’s first zero-carbon
