MEN’S SOCCER 2009: “BIG BROTHER” IS WATCHING JUSTIN ZIMMER

As much as Division I athletics are about winning, it shouldn’t be forgotten that in an academic environment, learning is part of the on-field experience as well. Radford men’s soccer coach Spencer Smith is making that part of his curriculum in 2009 and giving his upperclassmen a lab session in leadership. Though there are no credit hours to fulfill or grades to be handed out, Smith is putting his group to the test by assigning Highlander veterans to each of the 11 newcomers this season. “We wanted to give each of the incoming players a ‘big brother,’ so to speak, this season,” Smith says. “Just to help the new guys take care of some of the little things that might be taken for granted.” Smith wanted his returning players to lend a hand, even when it comes to the most basic tasks. “It’s things like getting things moved into a room, getting a bank account set up,” he says. “Basically, just helping these guys get settled in.” While being a “big brother” may be about lending an everyday hand, it’s also about trying to jump start a program that finished 7-10-2 in 2008 and 3-4 in Big South action. Radford closed out the season without finding the win column and scoring just twice in a sixgame span. Smith characterized last season as one where his group lacked chemistry. In his effort to reverse the trend, he brought back his “big brother” program, something the current Highlanders have never experienced in their careers. And so far, the response has been positive, across the board. “They’ve been really good so far,” Smith says. “They’re able to connect with the new guys and make them feel welcome.” While generating positive vibes off the field, it shouldn’t go unnoticed that there are building blocks for success on the pitch in 2009. including key veterans Brendan Shaffer and Justin Zimmer. Shaffer, who played in every minute of every match in 2008 as a central defender, is a vital cog in Smith’s leadership movement as team captain. “So far, he’s done a great job for us,” says Smith. “He’s not only done the job vocally, but he’s played a big part in keeping us organized. He’ll be a big part of our success.” In addition, Shaffer played all of 2008 with a cast on his left arm, while helping the Highlanders to the league’s best goals-against average. “That’s definitely something that will help him psychologically this year,” Smith says. “His mobility will be better without the cast, but it’s definitely something that will make him better from a mental standpoint.” On the other side of the field, Zimmer returns after playing a full season in 2008. A second team all-conference pick and a Big South Player of the Week (Sept. 14), Zimmer scored two goals and helped on four while starting in all 19 games. “Z did some good things for us last year, and we’re expecting more production from him this year,” says Smith. Radford also has the distinction of returning the Big South Freshman of the Year in Iyiola Awosika, who began his college career with a bang by netting six tallies. However, the Highlanders’ leading scorer slowed down as the season progressed. “He was a marked man,” Smith says. “And when he was slowed down, we couldn’t find the net.” Despite his production and potential, Smith doesn’t expect Awosika to carry the load in 2009. With a group of 11 newcomers and a renewed sense of sharing the responsibilities, Smith and Radford are much closer to finding a winning combination. “It’s definitely been a lot more competitive this We’ve preseason. Of the 11 players the Highlanders added to the roster, only five are true freshmen and five have been with other teams at the collegiate level. The list includes a pair of Division II scorers, Thomas George (2 goals, 5 points at Concord) and Anthony Payne (22 points, Mount Olive’s leading scorer), and two former Big East players in Ryan Stinnett (UConn) and Mike Handlin (Rutgers). One spot on the field the Highlanders will work to replace is at goalkeeper, where stalwart Zach Roszel manned the field for three seasons as a one of the league’s top keepers. Headlining a group of three keepers in 2009 is Ryan Taylor, who started five games last season. “Ryan’s looked good in training,” Smith says. “He’s a different player from Zach, but he has a high level of maturity and he’s not a guy we’ll have a whole lot of highs and lows with, which is the mindset we want back there.” The even-tempered, focused mindset is something Smith is looking for from his entire team in 2009, part of his on-going assignments in leadership and chemistry. And while a balanced group of new and experienced players tries to find their way to a winning formula, Smith doesn’t want to them to sleep during his most important lessons. “We’re trying to make them a family and family members help other family members out.”

SPENCER SMITH HEAD COACH 16th SEASON AT RADFORD/20th OVERALL Spencer Smith, the man with the most victories in Radford men’s soccer history and among the best in Big South annals, will continue to build on the program’s winning ways in 2009. Through the 2008 season, his 15th, Smith has 131 wins in his Radford career and is the architect of eight winning seasons in the New River Valley. The veteran coach has also led the school’s only two NCAA Tournament sides, as the Highlanders appeared in both the 1999 and 2000 brackets. Among Big South coaches, Smith’s win total at Radford is fourth-best in the 26-year history of the conference, and third among active coaches. His 55 league victories are fourth-best, all-time. His success with individual student athletes is among the best of any Radford program. Under Smith’s guidance, Ian Spooner earned Big South Player of the Year honors in 1994 and ’95, and Troy Washington took home POY honors in 1998. Both Spooner and Washington were named to the National Soccer Coaches’ Association of America (NCSAA) All-Region teams those seasons. Three of his former players were named to NCSAA all-region teams as well, including Sacha Drouin (1996), T.J. Rolfing (2002) and Omar Zinoveev (2004-05). Since 1994, 30 of Smith’s players have been named to one of the Big South post-season all-conference teams. Smith’s athletes have also excelled in the classroom during his 15 years. Highlighting those achievements is Patrick Colas, the recipient of an NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship in 2005 and a two-time College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) Academic All-American (third team – 2004, second team – 2005). Colas was also a two-time Big South Men’s Soccer Scholar Athlete of the Year. Mike Ginsburg (1997-98) and Scott Hance (2000) also earned conference men’s soccer scholar athlete of the year honors, and Justin Zimmer mmer earned academic all-district honors in 2008. In recent seasons his team’s academic accolades have Radford among d amon ng elit eelite litee company, nationally. The NSCAA recognized Radford in 2008, for the sec second econd straight year, as one of its Team Academic Award winners, an honorr given n to pproroograms with a team grade point average of 3.0 or better. Among men’s programs, n’s pro ograams,, Radford was one of just two Big South institutions, one of 35 NCAA Division A Divi vision nI teams, and one of 106 four-year colleges across the country to earn the dis distinction istin nctioon in 2008. Smith’s Highlanders first earned the honor in 2007. Upon arriving in southwest Virginia in 1994, Smith inherited a Radf Radford fordd program that finished 4-13-3 and was shut out eight times, the worstt markk inn th the he program’s Division I history. wa honored as Big South Coach of the Year, and guided six players to all-league was honors including 14-goal-scorer Troy Washington, the conference player of the ho year. ye However, in 1999 the Highlanders were forced to replace their five all-conference seniors and the young Radford squad stumbled to a 3-10-3 regular season fer mark. The turnaround came at the perfect time though and Smith’s team, led by ma Big Bi South Tournament MVP Greg Anderson, picked up three tournament wins to advance to the program’s first NCAA Tournament. After winning in penalty kicks ad against Liberty in the championship game, Radford earned the right to face Furag man in the play-in game of the tournament where the Highlanders fell, 1-0. ma Smith and the Highlanders returned to their winning ways in 2000, posting a 112-10-0 record and earning a second-straight Big South Tournament title and appearance in the NCAAs. Radford took the championship on the strength of two ap overtime wins in the tournament and a 2-0 blanking of Elon in the title game. ov Four-and-a-half seasons later, Smith reached another Radford milestone, earning his 86th Radford win with a 2-1 victory at home against VMI on Sept. 17, ea 2003, passing his predecessor Don Staley. 20 Radford is the third head coaching stop in 19 years for Smith. After beginning his career as an assistant at Lincoln Memorial University in Harrogate, Tenn., nin Smith took over the program in 1989. In two years with the Railsplitters, Smith Sm had 14 wins, including an 8-8-3 season in 1990. He led the program at North ha Carolina Wesleyan for the next three seasons, posting 20 wins and the only .500 Ca season over an eight year stretch (1990-97) for the Battlin’ Bishops by going 8-8-3 sea in 1993, his final season before heading to Radford. In the course of his 20 years as a collegiate head coach, Smith is 165-181-41. A 1987 graduate of the University of Tennessee, Smith was a four-year starter for the Volunteers, and a captain as a junior and senior. Smith also earned sta most valuable player honors in 1986. Following college, his professional career mo took him to Sheffield, England and included training with Sheffield United F.C., too as well as time with Stannington Village F.C. A native of Baltimore, Smith was head coach of the Virginia Olympic Development Program U-18 team from 1994-98. He was also the chairman of De the NSCAA South Atlantic Regional Rankings Committee and a member of the NCAA Regional Selection Committee. CHRIS BARRETT ASSISTANT COACH FOURTH SEASON AT RADFORD Carrying a resume that includes extensive experience across all levels of soccer, Chris Barrett is in his fifth season as an assistant coach for Radford. Barrett’s roots with Radford run deep: not only was he a four-year standout with the Highlanders, his development as a coach began and continues at his alma mater. The 1996 Radford graduate made his return to campus in 2006 and began molding the Highlander defense into one of the Big South’s best. He was promoted to a full-time top assistant in 2007, with an emphasis on coaching goalkeepers, recruiting, scheduling, scouting, and practice and game preparation. Under Barrett’s guidance in 2008, Zach Roszel posted the league’s top save percentage (.821) and fought through an injury-plagued season to post the Big South’s second-best goals against average (0.92). As a team, Radford allowed the league’s fewest goals (20 in 19 games) in 2008. Before making his return to the New River Valley, Barrett’s coaching career has included stops at the college, professional, club and high school levels in locations from Christiansburg to Georgia. His impact has been felt throughout southeastern soccer, most notably during his four years in Greenville, S.C. Barrett was co-director of Greenville FC, as well as the program’s director of player development. His former players with GFC include former Radford captain Devan Cooley and Taylor Rowe, an All-Big South honoree during his time with the Highlanders. league title game. Barrett was also a head varsity coach at Greenville High School. From Greenville, Barrett moved on to Conyers, Ga., where he worked as the youth academy director for the Rockdale Youth Soccer Association for two years. In his final stop prior to Radford, Barrett’s career in the youth ranks continued in Wilmington N.C. as the director of coaching and soccer operations for the Port City Soccer Club while working as a staff coach for the Cape Fear Soccer Association. Barrett also logged experience at the Division I collegiate level, working as an assistant coach at UNC Wilmington where Barrett helped the Seahawks to a Colonial Athletic Association semifinal trip in 2005 under current head coach Aidan Heaney. His sideline experience also includes time as an assistant coach at West Virginia, and as the head coach at nearby Christiansburg High School. Barrett has also worked with Olympic Development Programs in Virginia, West Virginia, South Carolina and Georgia. On the field, Barrett was a team captain in 1993 and 1994 with the Highlanders, and a Second Team All-Big South selection in 1994. Barrett was a freshman when Radford posted its best-ever regular season record (15-4-2) in 1991 and was a senior when current head coach Spencer Smith arrived. Heading into the 2009 season, Barrett is fifth on Radford’s all-time saves list with 207. Right after his playing days concluded, Barrett’s coaching career began as an assistant to Smith. Under Smith and Barrett’s guidance from 1995-98, the Highlanders won 43 games and claimed their first Big South regular season title. Barrett also volunteered his time as a goalkeeper’s coach for the Radford women’s team. Barrett earned his bachelor’s from Radford in leisure services. He is currently working towards a teaching certificate in physical and health education. He and his wife, Angie Skipper, live in Floyd with their daughter Seyda.

NSCAA HONORS MEN’S SOCCER WITH ACADEMIC AWARD The National Soccer Coaches’ Association of America (NSCAA) recognized Radford for the second straight year as one of its 2008 Team Academic Award winners, an honor given to programs with a team grade point average of 3.0 or better. Among men’s programs, Radford was one of just two Big South institutions (Winthrop), one of 35 NCAA Division I teams, and one of 106 four-year colleges across the country to earn the distinction in 2008. “This is a great honor for our team,” said head coach Spencer Smith. “Our guys continue to show a commitment in the classroom and pride themselves in being quality studentathletes.” The 2008 season marked the second straight year and second time overall that Radford has earned the recognition under Smith. RADFORD EARNS BIG SOUTH SPORTSMANSHIP AWARD Radford’s men’s soccer team was awarded a fall season team sportsmanship award by the Big South Conference. The honor was the first ever for the program under 15thyear head coach Spencer Smith. It’s the ninth time a Radford program has claimed the award. Team awards are voted on by Big South student-athletes and are awarded at the end of each competitive season. Teams cannot vote for themselves. Each institution ranks and votes for its top three. Teams receive three points for a first-place ranking, two points for a second-place ranking and one point for a third-place ranking. The honor is part of the Big South’s Sportsmanship Awards program that began in 2005-06. AWOSIKA, ZIMMER EARN BIG SOUTH HONORS Following their accomplished campaigns for Radford in 2008, Iyiola Awosika and Justin Zimmer earned Big South Conference men’s soccer honors. Awosika earned Big South Freshman of the Year honors and a spot on the all-freshman team, while Zimmer was named second team all-conference and to the all-academic team. Awosika started all 19 games for the Highlanders at the forward position. He led the team and ranked among the league leaders with 12 points on six goals. Awosika is the first Radford freshman since 1999 to lead the team in scoring and his six goals are the most for a Highlander frosh since the 1999 campaign. Zimmer was a top contributor for the Highlanders, with two goals, four assists and eight points in 19 games. Zimmer earned Big South Player of the Week honors (week of Sept. 8-14) after netting the equalizer in a 2-1 win over Liberty,

and assisting on the game-winner in a 1-0 win over Mount St. Mary’s. His golden goal in the fifth minute of overtime lifted Radford to a 1-0 win over regionally-ranked Appalachian State on Sept. 27. ZIMMER EARNS ACADEMIC ALLDISTRICT DISTINCTION In addition to his on-field contributions for the Highlanders in 2008, Justin Zimmer was awarded a spot on the ESPN The Magazine/CoSIDA Academic All-District Second Team. Zimmer carried a 3.54 grade point average while majoring in exercise, sport & health education. He’s also a recipient of Radford University’s Turk Scholarship, a grant awarded to undergraduate students that demonstrate leadership while being involved with campus activities. The senior forward is also an academic coach in athletics study hall. HIGHLANDERS AMONG REGION’S BEST Radford found its way into the NSCAA Mid-Atlantic Region rankings several times over the course of the 2008 season, rising as high as ninth on two occasions. In Weeks 3 and 5 of the poll, the Highlanders earned that ninth spot. Twice during the campaign, Radford was ranked 10th (Weeks 6 and 7) and twice the Highlanders received votes (Weeks 2 and 4). ZIMMER GOLDEN AGAINST REGIONALLY RANKED APPALACHIAN STATE Justin Zimmer’s golden goal in the fifth minute of overtime lifted Radford past regionally-ranked Appalachian State, 1-0, at Cupp Stadium. Midway through the overtime period, Zimmer created a breakaway opportunity in the middle of the field and let go of a shot just inside the penalty box. Appalachian’s goalkeeper reached down to make the save, but the ball went through his hands and into the net, giving the Highlanders the win. DELPINO’S TWO GOALS GIVE RADFORD NEW RECORD WINNING STREAK A pair of goals from Jeremy Delpino lifted Radford to a 3-1 victory over Presbyterian, and pushed Radford’s schoolrecord home winning streak to 11 games and its Big South home unbeaten string to nine. Delpino delivered his second game-winner in as many outings that night on a free kick opportunity in the 36th minute, when he drilled a bending shot from 25 yards out to the top right corner of the goal, giving the Highlanders a 2-0 advantage. His second of the night came in the 55th minute, when a ball deep in Blue Hose territory was deflected out to Delpino, who buried a chance from eight yards out to make it 3-1.

RADFORD PLAYS TO DOUBLE OT DRAW AT CLEMSON Iyiola Awosika’s goal in the 87th minute forced overtime and helped Radford gain a 1-1 double overtime draw at Clemson. With the Highlanders trailing 1-0 with less than four minutes remaining, Awosika netted the equalizer. The Tigers had a pair of corner kick situations in the final 30 seconds of regulation, but were unable to find the back of the net. HIGHLANDERS RALLY TO EDGE LIBERTY IN BIG SOUTH OPENER Iyiola Awosika’s goal in the 77th minute broke a 1-1 tie and pushed the Radford past Liberty, 2-1, in the Big South opener. A thru ball in the middle from Aldo Macias found Awosika, who dribbled around Liberty goalkeeper Paul Gilbert and tapped the ball into the net from 15 yards out to give the Highlanders the 2-1 lead. Following a scoreless first half, the Flames got on the board first, but with less than 20 minutes left, Radford knotted things up in th 75th when Emmanuel Joseph’s crossing pass from the right side of the field deflected out to Justin Zimmer, who took the open look from 15 yards out and buried the equalizer. DELPINO NAMED BIG SOUTH PLAYER OF THE WEEK Jeremy Delpino’s three goals in two games lifted the Radford men’s soccer team to a pair of victories over Longwood and Presbyterian, earning him Big South Player of the Week honors on Oct. 7. Delpino came off the bench to deliver a pair of game-winners for the Highlanders and help extend the team’s school-record 11-game winning streak at home and program-best nine-game home Big South unbeaten streak. His first game-clincher came against Longwood, as he converted on a penalty kick in the 53rd minute to lift Radford to a 1-0 win. In a 3-1 Big South win over Presbyterian, Delpino gave Radford all it needed in the 36th minute, when his free kick from 25 yards bended into the goal to give the Highlanders a 2-0 lead. He added an insurance goal in the 55th minute. The Big South highlighted his achievements in its countdown of the conference’s top 25 moments, teams and people in celebration of its 25th anniversary. • As a freshman in 1988, Washington led the Highlanders to the Big South Tournament championship with a school-record 27 goals scored and 22 assists for a Big South single-season record 76 points – a Conference record that still stands today. • The all-conference selection also led the nation in scoring in 1988. • Washington missed the 1989 season due to a broken ankle, but came back in 1990 and picked up where he left off as he tallied 23 goals and 18 assists for 64 total points to again lead all of NCAA Division I in scoring.. • In 1991, Washington led the Highlanders to a school-best 15-4-2 overall record and the regular season Big South championship. He was voted Big South Player of the Year after leading the league in scoring for the third time, and his 16 goals and 14 assists for 46 points made him the Big South’s all-time leading goal scorer and point scorer during that season. • He became Radford’s first Division I consensus First-Team All-American in 1991 and was also Virginia’s Player of the Year. • Washington also participated on the U.S. U-23 team in 1991 and became the first African-American to score a goal for the U.S. National Team. • In the summer of 1992 he played for the U.S. Olympic Men’s Soccer Team at the Barcelona Olympic Games, where he led the team with six goals in qualifying action. • Washington concluded his collegiate career later that fall with 13 goals and 11 assists in his senior season to finish his brilliant career with 82 goals scored, 66 assists and 230 total points – all Radford and Big South Conference records. His 82 goals scored still rank second all-time in NCAA history. • Following his Radford career he spent eight seasons in Major League Soccer with the Columbus Crew (1996, 2000-05), FC Dallas (1996-99) and Real Salt Lake (2005) scoring 52 goals and dishing out 30 assists in 170 games. • A two-time MLS all-star (1997, 2000), Washington is fifth all-time on the Crew’s goal scoring list. Penelope Ward Kyle became Radford University’s sixth, and first female, president when she took office on June 1, 2005. She came to RU with more than 30 years of experience in state government, the corporate and legal worlds, and higher education. Upon assuming the presidency, President Kyle immediately focused on leading the university’s initiative to become one of the top 50 masters universities in the nation. The Radford University strategic plan “7-17”, completed in 2007 at her direction, identifies four strategic directives -- the investment in people, programs, global and local society and the future of Radford University. Under President Kyle’s leadership, the university also added its first doctoral program with an emphasis in rural mental health and launched an initiative to grow graduate college student enrollment by offering additional doctoral and masters level programs. She hired the university’s first provost and created two new vice presidential areas of responsibility, Information Technology and University Relations. The Radford University Board of Visitors, at President Kyle’s request, has increased its membership by four positions to provide an opportunity for more diversity and leadership innovation within the governing body. A native of southwest Virginia, President Kyle is a product of the Galax public schools system. She graduated from Guilford College in Greensboro, North Carolina and did her postgraduate studies in English at Southern Methodist University in Dallas, Texas. She received her Juris Doctorate from the University of Virginia School of Law and later earned her MBA from the College of William and Mary. President Kyle served as Executive Director of the Virginia Lottery for 11 years, under three successive governors. First appointed by Governor George Allen in 1994, she was reappointed by Governor James Gilmore, and then reappointed once again by Governor Mark Warner. Previously, Ms. Kyle was employed by CSX Corporation, an international transportation company, where she became the company’s first female officer. Before joining CSX Corporation, she was an attorney with McGuire, Woods, LLP in Richmond. She also taught English for six years at Thomas Nelson Community College in Hampton, Virginia. President Kyle serves in leadership positions on numerous educational, civic, cultural, professional, financial and volunteer organizations. She served on the Board of Visitors at James Madison University from 1984 until 1992 and on the JMU Foundation Board 1992 until 1994. She also served on the Virginia Commonwealth University Foundation Board from 1994 until 2000 and on the Board of Governors of Saint Christopher’s School

from 1999 until 2005. President Kyle is currently a member of the Board of Directors of the Roanoke Regional Chamber of Commerce and is a member of the Board of Directors of PRA, Inc., a publicly traded company. Ms. Kyle is married to Charles L. Menges, an attorney and partner with McGuire, Woods, LLC. They are the parents of a son, Kyle Ward Menges, and two daughters, Penelope Whitley Menges, and Patricia Lee Menges.

Since being introduced as Radford University’s Director of Athletics in the fall of 2007, Radford native Robert Lineburg has helped usher in a new era of Highlander athletics, marked by unprecedented on-and off-field improvements and successes. In his short time with the department, Lineburg has been the catalyst for a number of changes, particularly in areas such as facilities, personnel and strategic planning. His most visible influence to date has been on the Dedmon ROBERT LINEBURG Center, where Lineburg has been DIRECTOR OF involved with major renovations ATHLETICS to the centerpiece of Radford athletics for more than 25 years. Beginning in the spring of 2008, the facility underwent transformations to the arena, including a new steel-supported roof, a new basketball floor, renovated athletic offices, a new-look natatorium, and improved athletic locker, training, and medical facilities. Lineburg has also overseen the hires of four new head coaches, as well as five new athletic administrators. His hires include women’s basketball head coach Taj Njongba, head volleyball coach Marci Jenkins, women’s head golf coach Jeff Beeler, and the promotion of track and field interim director Brent Chumbley to head coaches’ status. Among the administrators added in Lineburg’s tenure are executive associate A.D. Randy Butt, head athletic trainer David Jager, assistant A.D. for communications Joey Beeler, director of studentathlete support services/SWA Stephanie Ballein, and associate A.D. for external operations Greg Herring. As a result of the changes, Radford achieved a banner year in 2008-09: women’s soccer, men’s basketball, men’s tennis and softball claimed Big South conference crowns and advanced to NCAA Tournament play. Women’s soccer advanced to its fourth tournament, men’s basketball won the Big South regular-season and tournament to advance to the NCAAs for the first time since 1998, men’s tennis made its third-straight appearance, and softball appeared for the first time and won Radford’s first NCAA tournament game in any sport. He and his staff have also been responsible for creating a five-year strategic plan for the Radford athletic department and building an athletics facilities

master plan. Additional achievements include ushering in a new athletics Internet site (RadfordAthletics. com), and helping implement a new ticket system (Ticket Return). Lineburg and his staff have also hosted toplevel competition, with three Big South championships taking place on the Radford campus in 2008-09 (men’s basketball, track & field and softball). In addition to making an impact on Radford athletics, Lineburg is also involved in a number of different organizations and committees. He is the chairman of the Big South Conference Subcommittee on Basketball Improvement, a member of the Big South ad-hoc Committee on Basketball Issues, and a member of the selection committee to select Radford University’s Vice President for Advancement. Prior to becoming Radford’s third Director of Athletics, Lineburg’s corporate knowledge was groomed as a marketing associate with Peloton Real Estate Partners in Dallas, Texas. Along with his business experience, Lineburg spent 15 seasons as a college basketball coach, including time as Southern Methodist’s (Dallas, Texas) interim head coach. Prior to serving as the Mustangs interim head coach, Lineburg spent eight years as an assistant coach at SMU. Following his interim tenure, he served two more seasons as an assistant at Southern Methodist. Lineburg’s coaching resume also includes assistant coaching positions with the men’s basketball programs at James Madison University and Emory & Henry College, as well as with the Dallas Mavericks summer league team. His coaching experience also took him through the Big South, as he spent time on the sideline at UNC Greensboro. A 1991 graduate of Roanoke College, Lineburg started his collegiate basketball career as a Radford Highlander, where he was a two-year letterman before transferring to nearby Roanoke College to play his final two years. He earned his Bachelor’s Degree in political science with a minor in history. In 1995, he received a Master’s Degree in education from Virginia Tech, where he was also a graduate assistant on the men’s basketball staff. Lineburg is the son of retired Radford High School football coach and athletic director Norman Lineburg and the brother of Dr. Mark Lineburg, the Assistant Superintendent of Amherst Country Schools, Paul Lineburg, the Assistant Principal at Cave Spring H.S. and Wayne Lineburg, who is in his second season as the wide receivers coach at the University of Virginia. He is married to the former Mary Parish, also a native of Radford.

The department of sports medicine at Radford University is deeply concerned with both the short-term and long-term effects of intercollegiate competition on the physical and mental well being of the student-athlete. The sports medicine department is committed to providing quality health care to all varsity studentathletes, which begins with injury prevention. It is a priority to work with coaches, physicians, and the rest of the medical community to ensure that studentathletes are physically and menDAVE JAGER tally prepared for practice and HEAD ATHLETIC competition. TRAINER Additionally, the sports medicine staff is responsible for the treatment and rehabilitation of all athletically related injuries. It is the staffâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s goal to return the athlete to a level equal or above that of their pre-injury status; no athlete will return to play until his or her highest post-injury level of function has been achieved. Lastly, the concern from the physical well being of the student-athlete includes the opposition to the use of all illegal and NCAA-banned chemical substances by student-athletes. It is the responsibility of the sports medicine staff to provide athletes with information on the ill effects of drug use and to provide deterrents through periodic, random drug testing by the institution and the NCAA.

The mission of the Student-Athlete Support Services (SASS) office for Radford University Athletics is to promote, assist, and provide counsel to all student-athletes. Its primary, constant goal is to develop graduates and outstanding citizens who have contributed in the areas of athletic competition during their tenures of education. Located in the Dedmon Athletic Center, the newly established Learning Enhancement Center is equipped with computers, tutorial rooms, and a study lounge. STEPHANIE BALLEIN The Learning Enhancement DIRECTOR OF STUDENT- Center provides direction for ATHLETE SUPPORT student-athletes via academic counseling in conjunction with advisors from the respective colleges at Radford University. Academic support services such as tutoring and supervised study hall are provided, as well as career planning, monitoring of eligibility status, and a host of other guidance and advisory services.

Since its founding in 1983, the Big South Conference has matured into a competitive leader in college athletics, actively pursuing excellence on the field of play and in the classroom. The League’s growing presence as an NCAA Division I athletic conference is evident by athletic accomplishments on the national stage, innovative marketing and media partnerships, increased television packages, and quality athletic competition while intentionally fostering the academic, personal, social, athletic and leadership development of each student-athlete. The Big South Conference was formed on August 21, 1983, when Charleston Southern Athletic Director Howard Bagwell and Augusta President George Christenberry began recruiting members into the Big South, receiving initial commitments from Augusta, Charleston Southern, Campbell, Coastal Carolina and Winthrop. One month later, Dr. Edward M. Singleton was selected as the League’s first Commissioner and continued to solicit new members. His efforts led to the additions of Armstrong State, Radford and UNC Asheville, giving the Big South more than the required six members to constitute an official conference. The Big South’s first year of competition was in the Fall of 1984, and in September 1986, the Big South Conference was granted fullfledged NCAA Division I status. In August 1996, Kyle B. Kallander

replaced Sasser as the League’s third Commissioner, and in his 13 years at the helm of the Big South, Kallander has been instrumental in aggressively promoting the Conference to new levels. The Conference has enjoyed record levels in marketing revenue during the past several years, he has brought television coverage to Big South women’s basketball, baseball and softball for the first time in Conference history, as well as increased national television exposure to the League as a whole through aggressive and unique tV packages. Under Kallander’s leadership, the Big South developed and initiated its first long-range strategic plan, re-affirming the League’s vision as a distinctive athletic Conference committed to the quality of institutional life through athletic competition. He also spearheaded the efforts to add football as a championship sport, which came to fruition in 2002, and has solidified Conference membership with the additions of High Point, Gardner-Webb and Presbyterian, and in 2011-12, the return of charter member Campbell University. Kallander’s long range vision has also included technological advancements, as the Conference introduced its first live event video streaming in 2005 and has since expanded its video offerings to more than 600 events annually through a partnership with the member institutions, as well as the creation of several online and social media platforms. In the last 15 years alone, the Big South has experienced monumental growth and success in nearly

every sport. During this time, the Conference has had two individual National Champions, more than 200 All-Americans, has reached the “Sweet 16” in men’s soccer, women’s basketball and baseball, has received national Top 25 rankings in men’s soccer, men’s basketball, women’s basketball, baseball, men’s outdoor track & field, and men’s golf, had an individual selected to play in the NCAA Singles Championship four times in addition to the first men’s tennis doubles at-large selection, had the No. 1 ranked men’s golfer in the country, has had the nation’s top scoring men’s basketball team three consecutive years as well as the national men’s basketball scoring leader twice, received an atlarge playoff berth in the Football Championship Subdivision in 2006, and had an institution finish fifth in the NCAA Men’s Golf Championships – the Conference’s highest-ever team finish in an NCAA event. The Conference’s tagline, “Developing Leaders Through Athletics” was unveiled in 2008-09 in conjunction with the Conference’s 25th Anniversary. The League also honored its heritage with the Top 25 “Best of the Best” moments in League history from 1983-2008, with Liberty University’s 10-year women’s basketball championship run from 1996-2007 being crowned the No. 1 moment in the Big South’s first 25 years. The league has had more than 95 academic allAmericans in its quarter-century of existence.
