2011 Radford Softball Conway, S.C. -- A five-run second and an outstanding relief performance from junior Kellie Snooks fueled Radford to its second straight Big South Championship with a 5-2 victory over Winthrop at CCU Softball Field. After falling behind 2-0 in the first, Radford batted around and scored five runs in the second and Snooks shut down Winthrop with six innings of shutout relief as Highlanders upended the Eagles in championship contest. At one point Snooks, who struck out two, retired 11 straight batters into the seventh and then was the benefit of two spectacular catches by junior center fielder Shannon Keefe to secure the championship. An all-tournament selection, Snooks scattered five hits, walked none and only allowed two base runners in one inning (seventh). Kristen Shifflett (MVP), Snooks, Taylor Cunningham and Nichole Beall earned all-tournament honors. Shifflett batted .600 (6-10) with a pair of long balls, six RBI and four runs scored and was a part of a defense that did not commit an error in 93 chances.

“We played incredible defense the entire tournament,” stated head coach Mickey Dean. “Shannon’s two plays in the seventh capped it off and the double play to end the game was unbelievable.”

ATHENS, Ga. -- Radford reached the NCAA Regional Final for the first time in program history after upsetting No. 24 Florida State, 3-2 on May 22. The Highlanders rallied from an early 2-0 deficit with a pair of solo home runs and went ahead for good on senior Sarah Himan’s two-out RBI single in the fifth. Radford sealed the victory when junior leftfielder Lauren Williams threw out the eventual game-tying run at third base for the final out of the contest. Radford reached the game against FSU after blanking Elon, 8-0, in an elimination game. Nichole Beall and Chelsea Kelleyprovided the spark. Beall cranked a pair of home runs and knocked in four, while Kelley tossed a one-hit shutout. The Highlanders ended their season the following day in the regional final. They fell to host and WCWSsemifinalist Georgia, 8-1. Radford recorded nine hits off Bulldog pitching, including two each by Kristen Shifflett, Taylor Cunnigham and Michelle Beall. Williams knocked in the lone run with a second-inning RBI double.
“Our team went 100 percent on every play. We made sure that there were no ‘ifs.’ This is where we want to be right now,” senior catcher Sarah Himan reflecting on Elon and Florida State.
“Yesterday, we played with emotion. Today, we played with passion,” head coach Mickey Dean on the differnce between the two Florida State games.

In 2009, Radford softball made its first ever trip off the mainland a very sucessful one. The Highlanders spent 12 days in Hawai’i playing softball, seeing the sights and coming together as a team. The trip was highlighted by an 8-2 record which included back-to-back victories over then-No. 25 Mississippi State (3-2) and Oregon State (3-1), the first ever wins against a ranked and PAC-10 opponent.

2010 Jenny Finch Camp
ocated in the northeast corner of the Dedmon Center’s outdoor facilities, Radford Softball Field offers several new amenities with the most recent additions being made in 2009. A backstop netting replaced the original fencing and a second batting cage located on the first base side are the featured upgrades. Other improvements included a new outfield windscreen, along with lowering the fences to four feet in foul territory. Along with the upgrades, RU Softball Field has been host to the 2009 and 2010 Jenny Finch Softball camp. This three-day event featured 400 campers and over 1,000 people descending on Radford’s softball facilites. In the summer and fall of 2007, new grass sod was laid out in foul territory. With that, a new irrigation system was installed to cover the expanded area of grass. Renovations on the field started prior to the 2004 season when covered dugouts that include a heating system were built. Upgrades prior to the 2006 season included a working press box and an improvement in the fan seating areas, moving the primary grandstand area directly behind home plate. These improvements allowed the Highlanders to host their first Big South Championship at RU Softball field in 2006 as well as 2009. Radford is also the future host of the 2012 tournament. The newest addition to the list of amenities for the Highlander softball team is an indoor batting and pitching facility that allows Radford to practice year-round. The facility includes six dedicated batting cages, with the necessary equipment and amenities for either live pitching or machine pitching. Located adjacent to campus, the indoor facility can serve the Radford softball team year-round, anytime the weather restricts outdoor practice.

Fifth Year s Elon ‘87 Overall: 234-79 (5) At Radford: 169-74 (4) Big South: 54-12 (4)
ince taking his spot in the coaches’ box in 2007, Mickey Dean has lifted Radford softball to successes never before seen by the program, or any Highlander team. Dean, whose championship pedigree extends from high school to the professional ranks, has led the Highlanders to back-to-back Big South championships as well as the program’s first-ever NCAA tournament win (2009) and NCAA Regional Final appearance (2010) for any Radford athletic team. The program’s remarkable year-by-year improvement under the two-time Big South and VaSID State Coach of the Year culminated with a NCAA Regional runner-up finish last season, but was clearly a model of consistency: Since 2005, Radford is the winningest program (248-121) in the state of Virginia and from 2006-09, the Highlanders were just one of 10 Division I program to win 40 contests each season. Under the guidance of the winningest coach in program history, Radford has won 169 games (three 40-plus win seasons) an average of 42 victories the past four years. The Highlanders have also been dominant in Big South play over the past three seasons. Along with a pair of regular season and tournament championships (2009 & 2010), Radford has posted a 45-6 mark in regular season play. Take away two losses to start 2008, the Highlanders have dropped just four contests over a 49-game span and put together an 18-game regular season winning streak over the 2008 and 2009 seasons. 2010 saw the Highlanders advance all the way to the NCAA Regional final against host and eventual-national semifinalist Georgia. However, the day before Radford was to clash with Georgia, the Highlanders picked up their most important victory in program history when they came from behind and defeated then-No. 24 Florida State, 3-2. The victory over the Seminoles was the highest ranked team the Highlanders have defeated and gave them two wins over nationally ranked programs the past two seasons. Continuing the trend of record-breaking seasons in 2010, the Highlanders improved on school marks set in 2009 in home runs (74), batting average (.318), slugging percentage (.541) and conference wins (16). The 74 long balls also broke Liberty’s Big South mark of 73 accomplished in 2007. They also set new records with 270 RBI and a .971 fielding percentage and defended their home turf. Radford recorded an undefeated 16-0 mark at RU Softball Field, the first perfect home season in program history. Under Dean’s tutelage, the Highlanders have garnered 27 all-conference (20 first-team) and 10 regional (seven first-team) selections, recorded the program’s highest RPI (40) in 2010, earned recognition in the 2008 and 2010 national polls, including a vote in the final 2010 USA Today/NFCA Coaches poll. The success, however, extended beyond the box scores. After hosting and winning the
2009 Big South tournament, Dean and the Highlanders appeared in the tough Chapel Hill regional. Radford was edged by eventual national semifinalist Georgia, defeated Campbell and fell to the host and 15th-ranked Tar Heels. The 9-5 come-from-behind win over the Camels was the first NCAA team victory for a Radford University athletic program in school history. Radford’s showing in the Chapel Hill regional, along with its 41-15 (16-2, Big South) campaign in 2009 earned the Highlander coaching staff NFCA Mid-Atlantic Region Coaching Staff of the Year honors. To go along with Radford’s accolades, Dean also guided the Chicago Bandits of the National Pro FastPitch League to a 2008 championship, the first in franchise history. During his six-year tenure as the head coach, the Bandits have claimed four NPF regular season championships. After completing his fourth season as the head coach of the Bandits, he was promoted to the team’s general manager position in September and held that position for the 2009 season. The championships by the Bandits and Highlanders added to Dean’s stellar accomplishments. He has now won a championship at the high school, junior college, NCAA, professional and Olympic levels. On the recruiting trail, Dean has reaped the benefits early on as his classes have made immediate impacts on the field. In 2008, Shannon Keefe was named the Big South and VaSID state Freshman of the Year and just a season later Leigh Godfrey garnered both those honors. Keefe was the first Highlander rookie to be recognized by the Big South since 1995. It came full circle in 2010, when Kristen Shifflett, a member of his first recruiting class, was named Big South Female Student-Athlete of the Year, as well as Big South and VaSID State Player of the Year, a first for any Highlander since 1996. Since 2008, Dean’s first recruiting class has produced 12 all-conference and 12 all-state selections, two Big South Tournament MVP’s and five all-region honorees. Dean’s pitchers have been successful under his tutelage having been named the Big South Pitcher of the Year in his first three seasons and first team all-conference in all four. In 2009, Chelsea Kelley followed in Ashley Taylor’s footsteps as the conference’s top pitcher as well as being one of the first four Highlanders to be named a first team all-region selection. Following a strong coaching debut in 2007, Radford softball under Dean completed one of its most successful campaigns in school history in 2008. The Highlanders posted a schoolbest 46-15 mark that included a record 16-game winning streak. Those were just two of several marks obtained that season. Along with the wins and winning streak, new records were set for winning percentage (.754), road/neutral site wins (34), hit by pitches (26), winning streak (16 games) and road winning streak (eight games). As with 2007, several hitting records were set, only to be broken a season later.

2011 Radford Softball
On a national scale, Radford received its first vote in a NCAA poll, ranking it 34th and 37th nationally. The Highlanders recorded the highest RPI (44) in school history and finished the season 49th. They also garnered a Big South record seven first team all-conference selections and eight overall. Dean was hired on Sept. 7, 2006 as Radford University’s fifth head coach in school history. He joined Radford after two seasons as an assistant and associate head coach at Longwood University. In his first season with Radford, Dean guided the Highlanders to a then-school record 4427 mark and their second straight appearance in the Big South Championship game. Under his guidance, RU athletes earned six all-conference awards and four all-state accolades. Ashley Taylor was named Big South Pitcher of the Year and earned Southeast region honors, while becoming the first Highlander to obtain all-conference accolades as a pitcher and hitter. The Highlanders also broke several team and individual records in 2007. Dean’s pitchers struck out a school-record 492 batters, while the base runners swiped a program-best 128 bases. Along with those marks, several hitting records fell, only to be broken again in 2008. A three-time NPF Manager of the Year, Dean became the sole manager of the Bandits in 2007 and after the 2008 championship he was named general manager. Prior to that, he along with co-manager Eugene Lenti led the Bandits to regular season championships in 2005 and 2006, including a 30-12 finish in 2006. Dean, who was on the staff of the Venezuelan National team from 2002-08, helped lead the squad to the Gold Medal at the Central American Olympic Games in his first season and a Bronze Medal at the 2006 Pan American Games in Guatemala. He was also on the coaching staff in 2003 when Venezuela played in the Olympic qualifying tournament. In 2008, Venezuela qualified for its first-ever Olympic Games in Beijing, China. Before coming to Radford, Dean became a member of Longwood’s coaching staff as an assistant in 2005 and was promoted to associate head coach in 2006. During his two seasons, he served as the pitching coach, recruiting coordinator and defense strategy coach. Prior to the Bandits, Dean spent two seasons (2002-2004) as an assistant coach at Indiana University, helping guide the Hoosiers to their first winning season since 1997, finishing 2004 with a 32-31 record. The 2004 pitching staff also ranks second all-time in strikeouts in a season at Indiana. Before joining the staff at Indiana, Dean was an assistant at the University of Akron from 2001-2002, where the Zips won the Mid-American Conference (East Division) Championship in 2002. While at Akron, he coached the 2002 MAC Pitcher of the Year. He was also an assistant coach for Lake City Community College (Fla.) (LCCC) in the spring of 2000, before being promoted to head coach in the fall of the same year. As head coach of LCCC, he led the team to a NJCAA National Championship with a 65-5 record, earning him NJCAA Tournament Coach of the Year. Dean began coaching softball in 1996, taking over the head coaching position at Orange County High School in Orange, Va. He was at the helm of the Hornets from 1996-1999, winning two Virginia AA State Titles (1998-99) and reaching the state semifinals in 1997. During his stint at OCHS, Dean was named Group AA Coach of the Year in 1998 and 1999 and co-coach of the year in 1997. He was also selected to coach in the 1999 and 2000 Virginia East-West All-Star Games. A 1987 graduate of Elon University, Dean holds a bachelor’s degree in public administration. During his playing days, he was a four-year member of the baseball team which participated in the NAIA College World Series in both 1985 and 1987. Dean and his wife Liz reside in Pulaski with their two children, Isaac and Caroline.

2011 Radford Softball Katy Lampman Assistant Coach Third Season Winthrop ‘03 K
aty Lampman has made an immediate impact on the Highlander squad since joining the staff in 2009. With on-field instruction being Lampman’s main focus, the Highlander defense has flourished in her first two seasons on the bench. Making gradual improvements each season, the Highlanders have recorded the top fielding percentage in the Big South, including a school record mark of .971 in 2010. Along with the top fielding percentage, Radford committed the fewest errors (46) in school history. The defensive improvement came to fruition in the the 2010 Big South Tournament when Radford, on its way to a second league championship, did not commit a miscue in three games. In 2009, Radford turned a school record 24 double plays and posted a .966 fielding percentage, tops in the Big South and then-second best in school history. Playing a key role in Radford’s 2009 Big South Championship and a NCAA Regional appearance, Lampman was part of a staff that was named Mid-Atlantic Region Coaching Staff of the Year. Also working with the Highlander bats, the Highlanders improved on several team and individual numbers from a season ago which included breaking school records in batting average (.318), home runs (74) and slugging (.541). A 2003 graduate of Winthrop, Lampman joined Radford after spending the past two seasons as a volunteer assistant coach with her alma mater. While with the Eagles, she worked closely with the hitters and catchers. Along with coaching, Lampman has been providing private lessons that keyed on pitching, catching and hitting, while working several camps at Winthrop, University of Georgia and in Canada over the past six years. In 2007, she founded the Superior Softball School in Concord, N.C. which offers individual instruction and clinics in all areas of softball. Lampman (formerly Katy Agee) was a three-year starting catcher for the Lady Eagles (2001-03). A 2002 Big South All-Tournament selection, Lampman helped Winthrop to a pair of Big South Championship game appearances in 2001 and 2002. A pre-med major, Lampman graduated from Winthrop with a degree in biology, earning NFCA AllAcademic honors, while being a member of the Tri-Beta Honor Society. A native of Louisa, Va., she resides in Dublin with her two daughters, Natalie and Corynn.

Messick, a former Roanoke College standout, joined Radford after spending the 2009 season as an assistant coach at her alma mater. She made a successful transition from player to coach, serving as the Maroons’ infield instructor and helping them to a 24-11 overall and 12-6 ODAC (Old Dominion Athletic Conference) record. As a member of the Highlander staff, Mariconda will assist in all areas, which includes working with the infielders and the day-to-day operations of the program. Mariconda, a former Virginia Tech standout, made the short trip down I-81 after spending the past five seasons in Blacksburg as a player and student assistant coach. “We are pleased to have Charisse join our staff,” said Dean. “She gained valuable experience playing in the Women’s College World Series and against the U.S. National Team. With that, Charisse brings a tremendous amount of playing experience and knowledge to our program.” Following a stellar playing career with the Hokies, the native of Hollywood, Fla. worked under Virginia Tech skipper Scot Thomas in 2009-10 while finishing up her coursework and graduating with a degree in sociology in May of 2010. Ashley Carlson in the Pros
56
Ashley Carlson, a four-year starter in the outfield for Radford, became the first Highlander softball player to compete professionally when she landed a roster spot on May 25, 2008 with the Chicago Bandits of the National Pro Fastpitch League (NPF). Carlson, a two-year member of the Bandits, played a key role off the bench as Chicago won its first NPF Championship in 2008. The Bandits made their magical run from worst to first, winning their final 15 games, culminating with a 6-4 victory over the Washington Glory in the championship game to win the Cowles Cup Trophy on Aug. 24. In her first professional start on June 9, Carlson helped the Bandits in a 14-1 victory over the Akron Racers with three singles and a sacrifice bunt. She also scored a pair of runs and had an RBI. She finished her rookie season batting .286 (4-14) with 12 runs scored and an RBI. She tied for third on the team with eight stolen bases. Carlson, a two-time All-Big South performer, was a key factor in the success of Radford softball over the past four years. The Highlanders won 169 games during her time roaming the outfield. Carlson’s speed and quick hands contributed to her breaking both the career hits and steals records at Radford, while landing in the top five in the Big South in both those categories. The 2008 graduate played in 257 games, making 254 starts. She batted .313 with 255 hits, eight doubles, eight triples, 30 RBI and 139 runs scored. She also stole 98 career bases, leading the Big South in that category her final three seasons.
The Big South Conference
Since its founding in 1983, the Big South Conference has matured into a competitive leader in college athletics, actively pursuing excellence on the field of play and in the classroom. The League’s growing presence as an NCAA Division I athletic conference is evident by athletic accomplishments on the national stage, innovative marketing and media partnerships, increased television packages, and quality athletic competition while intentionally fostering the academic, personal, social, athletic and leadership development of each student-athlete. This has evolved into the Conference’s mission of “Developing Leaders Through Athletics.” The Big South Conference was formed on August 21, 1983, when Charleston Southern (then Baptist College) Athletic Director Howard Bagwell and Augusta President George Christenberry began recruiting members into the Big South, receiving initial commitments from Augusta, Charleston Southern, Campbell, Coastal Carolina and Winthrop. One month later, Dr. Edward M. Singleton was selected as the League’s first Commissioner and continued to solicit new members. His efforts led to the additions of Armstrong State, Radford and UNC Asheville, giving the Big South more than the required six members to constitute an official conference. The Big South’s first year of competition was in the Fall of 1984, and in September 1986, the Big South Conference was granted full-fledged NCAA Division I status. During its infancy and prior to securing automatic bids to NCAA Championships, the Big South made early strides in earning at-large berths in several national postseason events, including volleyball, women’s basketball and women’s golf. In 1989, George F. “Buddy” Sasser replaced the retiring Dr. Singleton as Commissioner, and in 1990, the League received its first automatic bid – receiving an automatic qualifier to the NCAA Baseball Championship. Under Sasser’s seven years of leadership, the Conference implemented its public relations and compliance programs, and introduced its first-ever men’s basketball television package, featuring the Big South competing among some of the finest teams in the nation. In August 1996, Kyle B. Kallander replaced Sasser as the third Commissioner, and in his 13 years at the helm of the Big South, Kallander has been instrumental in aggressively promoting the Conference to new levels. The Conference has enjoyed record levels in marketing revenue during the past several years, he has brought television coverage to Big South women’s basketball, baseball and softball for the first time in Conference history, as well as increased national television exposure to the League as a whole through aggressive and unique television packages. Under Kallander’s leadership, the Big South developed and initiated its first longrange strategic plan, re-affirming the League’s vision as a distinctive athletic Conference committed to the quality of institutional life through athletic competition. He also spearheaded the efforts to add football as a championship sport, which came to fruition in 2002, and has solidified Conference membership with the additions of High Point, Gardner-Webb and Presbyterian, and in 2011-12, the return of charter member Campbell University. Kallander’s long range vision has also included technological advancements, as the Conference introduced its first live event video streaming in 2005 and has since expanded its video offerings to more than 600 events annually through a partnership with the member institutions, as well as the creation of several online and social media platforms. In the last 15 years, the Big South has experienced monumental growth and suc-
cess in nearly every sport. During this time, the Conference has had two individual National Champions, more than 200 All-Americans, has reached the “Sweet 16” in men’s soccer, women’s basketball and baseball, has received national Top 25 rankings in men’s soccer, men’s basketball, women’s basketball, baseball, men’s outdoor track & field, and men’s golf, had an individual selected to play in the NCAA Singles Championship four times in addition to the first men’s tennis doubles at-large selection, had the No. 1 ranked men’s golfer in the country, has had the nation’s top scoring men’s basketball team three consecutive years as well as the national men’s basketball scoring leader twice, received an at-large playoff berth in the Football Championship Subdivision in 2006, and had an institution finish fifth in the NCAA Men’s Golf Championships – the highest-ever team finish in an NCAA event. The Conference’s tagline, “Developing Leaders Through Athletics” was unveiled in 2008-09 in conjunction with the Conference’s 25th Anniversary. The League also honored its heritage with the Top 25 “Best of the Best” moments in League history from 1983-2008, with Liberty University’s 10-year women’s basketball championship run from 1996-2007 being crowned the No. 1 moment in the Big South’s first 25 years. The Conference’s on-field accomplishments have been duplicated in the classroom. Annually, more than 40 percent of Conference student-athletes are named to the Big South’s Presidential Honor Roll for maintaining a cumulative 3.0 grade-point average, and the League has had more than 95 Academic All-Americans in its quarter-century of existence.

Previously, Ms. Kyle was employed by CSX Corporation, an international transportation company, where she became the company’s first female officer. Before joining CSX Corporation, she was an attorney with McGuire, Woods, LLP in Richmond. She also taught English for six years at Thomas Nelson Community College in Hampton, Virginia. Director of Athletics Robert Lineburg
Since being introduced as Radford University’s Director of Athletics in the fall of 2007, Radford native Robert Lineburg has helped usher in a new era of Highlander athletics, marked by unprecedented on-and off-field improvements and successes. In his short time with the department, Lineburg has been the catalyst for a number of changes, particularly in areas such as facilities, personnel and strategic planning. His most visible influence to date has been on the Dedmon Center, where Lineburg has been involved with major renovations to the centerpiece of Radford athletics for more than 25 years. Beginning in the spring of 2008, the facility underwent transformations to the arena, including a new steel-supported roof, a new basketball floor, renovated athletic offices, a newlook natatorium, and improved athletic locker, training, and medical facilities. Along with the initial transformations to the Dedmon Center, an improved state-of-the-art strength and conditioning room, new ticket office and Learning Enhancement Center (LEC), which houses student-athlete academic support, were completed/added in 2009. In 2010, facility upgrades included a new high-tech videoboard / sound system to the Dedmon Center as well as a new playing surface / irrigation system and dugouts to the Radford University Baseball Field. Lineburg has also overseen the hires of five new head coaches, as well as six new athletic administrators. His hires include women’s basketball head coach Taj Njongba, head volleyball coach Marci Jenkins, women’s head golf coach Jeff Beeler, head men’s soccer coach Marc Reeves and the promotion of track and field interim director Brent Chumbley to head coaches’ status. Among the administrators added in Lineburg’s tenure are executive associate A.D. Randy Butt, head athletic trainer Chad Hyatt, assistant A.D. for communications Joey Beeler, director of student-athlete support services/senior women’s administrator Stephanie Ballein and Director of Facilities Brad Epperley. As a result of the changes, Radford achieved a banner year in 2008-09: women’s soccer, men’s basketball, men’s tennis and softball claimed Big South conference crowns and advanced to NCAA Tournament play. Women’s soccer advanced to its fourth tournament, men’s basketball won the Big South regular-season and tournament title to advance to the NCAAs for the first time since 1998, men’s tennis made its thirdstraight appearance, and softball appeared for the first time and won Radford’s firstever NCAA tournament game in any sport. Lineburg and the Highlanders backed their success in 2008-09 with a men’s tennis and softball Big South regular season title in 2009-10. Mickey Dean’s softball team went on to win their second straight conference tournament crown before advancing to the Athens, Georgia Regional final with two more NCAA Tournament victories. Along with their competitive success, the Highlanders have defined the true meaning of “student-athlete” during Lineburg’s tenure. For the second consecutive year, Raford led all Big South institutions by placing 58.3 percent of its student-athletes on the conference’s Presidential Honor Roll. In 2008-09, the Highlanders had 57.9 percent of their students on the list.
