ACADEMIC COACHING A Year 9 GUIDE
“A great coach doesn’t focus on teaching you something you don’t know, they focus on helping you reveal the knowledge and skills you have within and coach you on how to sharpen, strengthen and expand them.”
What is coaching?
Coaching: To unlock an individual’s potential, maximising their own performance - to help them to learn rather than teaching them. A dialogue in which the coach and the coachee collaborate to unlock a coachee’s potential. It is a relationship that helps coaches to learn and enhance their effectiveness and performance. The GROW Coaching Model: This model provides a scaffold on which coaching conversations can be based. It provides a helpful structure that enables the coaching conversation to progress toward clear actions and outcomes.
What are the aims of Abingdon Edge peer coaching? For students and staff, from schools across the town of Abingdon to collaborate with
the intention of building stronger relationships and greater self-awareness, while impacting the opportunities of younger students.
For Yr9 students to be given autonomy in their learning yet feel supported, guided and challenged in setting goals and managing obstacles. For all students to develop a greater understanding of their role within the Abingdon community.
What’s in it for me Academic coaching sessions will give you regular weekly contact with a trained Y12 coach. During one to one sessions they will support and guide you to reach a goal chosen by you to support with your studies. The Y12 coaches will be a friendly face each week, there to help you succeed and develop.
Who will help me? Y12 students from Abingdon School, Radley College, Fitzharrys, John Mason and Larkmead have undergone 7 weeks of coaching training. They are now looking forward to working with Y9 students to provide support and guidance. These students have been in your position and have learnt from their experiences. They are now ready to listen, guide and support you to succeed.
How does it work? Once we have received your parent’s consent you will receive an email inviting you to a zoom meeting with your assigned Y12 coach. You will begin by discussing a goal that you feel they could support you with, such as organisation or study skills. Each week the coaches will guide and support you to achieve these goals. Each session will last no longer than 45 minutes. The dates of the sessions are:
Thursday 28th January Thursday 4th February Thursday 11th February Thursday 25th February Thursday 4th March Thursday 11th March
What do I need? ● ● ●
Login details for the session A quiet space so you are not disturbed A device with internet connection such as a laptop, tablet or smartphone ● A positive mindset and willingness to engage with your coach. ● You won’t need to produce any ‘work’ as your coach will take notes from the sessions.
We do hope you benefit from these sessions and feel supported to reach your goals.
