I
ssue#40 - It’s hard to believe it’s been ten years since we started the magazine and my thanks and appreciation go to the advertisers, contributors and readers who have supported us over the years. There have been ups and downs, like any other business, but we continue to publish and with the variety of interesting people and places, we will never be short of things to write about. Over the past ten years I have seen the region change so much, and the people moving here are bringing with them creativity, knowledge and experience that they are using to establish some exciting businesses that we profile in this issue. Check out the Events page and be sure to bookmark your calendar, as there are several events taking place over the next few months that are suitable for all ages. Thanks to Esther Bunning and her team for the fantastic cover shot for the Wedding Guide issue, which showcases the region’s best venues, caterers, photographers, hair and beauty specialists. Wairarapa is an unforgettable place for a wedding. The next issue will be coming out in September (Spring #41) as I am going to take a break over the winter period. I hope you enjoy the magazine and see you in Spring, cheers Raewyn.

Decade milestone for Greytown Butchery
T
en years on and still going strong, the team and current owners Gavin Green and Julie Fairbrother of Greytown Butchery celebrated their 10 year milestone of owning and operating the business at the end of February. It feels like it was just the other day when this young fresh faced couple arrived back from Australia, with delicious new ideas in which Gavin’s inspiration turned his customers’ dull and drab dinner menus into excitingly tasty and exotic experiences with mouthwatering flavours from around the world and tips passed down for generations. Greytown Butchery has been operating for well over a century, and is the only business in Greytown which is still operating as the same business from the same building as it was from in the early settlers’ days. Greytown Butchery continues to stamp their mark through the test of time and trends of the forever changing consumer shopping habbits. Over the last 10 years, Greytown Butchery has become rapidly famous for their handpicked local lamb selected only for Greytown Butchery and a huge collection of New Zealand Sausage Awards fill up the wall space from the last decade. Gavin and Julie say that previous owners of Greytown Butchery have also won NZ Sausage awards, so it goes to show there is something truly special about this piece of history marking once again another milestone. This is a gem they want to continue to see thrive when such shops are now dwindling away around New Zealand. Congratulations Greytown Butchery!

Sweet As
S
tep inside Sue Ryan’s “small is beautiful” shop Sweet & Delights, and your sweet tooth snaps to attention. Sits up and begs. Because covering every surface are temptations and delights with a sweet theme. Glace orange rolls. Confit peaches. Damson chocolates. Laughing Owl Fudge. Fix & Fogg Chocolate Peanut Butter. Cocodeli Drizzles. Schoc Chocolate. Spiced Figs. Wakelin House biscotti. Countless gourmet jams and jellies. A full jam-making kit. You get the idea. Sweet is the latest addition to what Sue calls Featherston’s foodie area, sharing the building with C’est Cheese and next to Everest Cafe at the Rimutaka Hill end of the town. She and partner Paul Broughton (C’est Cheese) have redeveloped the historic building. Sue shuffled space around to put her own studio at the rear of the building, shifted her original shop Mr Feather’s Den (Oddities and Delights) back a bit and created Sweet on the street frontage. “The combination is fun,” she explains. “Many emptynesters (both locals and travellers) pop in for cheese, stroll next door to see what we’re doing, find something sweetly
delicious to take home and then have a quick ferret through the den, with its mid-century treasures. “Many customers tell me they don’t want to accumulate ‘more stuff’. But they enjoy treats like eating well, finding an interesting book or a fun kitchen item. “They smile when they look above the shelving and see three of Mrs Beeton’s recipes written there, blackboard style. And then they notice the counter front is papered with pages from vintage cookbooks, and that triggers memories and conversations,” she smiles. A former communications specialist, Sue is active in Featherston’s BookTown project, when she’s not tracking down new delights for her stores, or taking some time for her own painting.

A
n historic blacksmith building in south Wairarapa has been given a new lease of life and transformed into a coffee house thanks to the vision of its owner Andrea Didsbury. Mrs Didsbury and her husband, Guy, a fifth-generation owner of Pirinoa Station on which The Land Girl Coffee House is located, have spent the last few years earthquake strengthening and renovating the old building so it is now ready to welcome a new generation of visitors. The Land Girl sells coffee and freshly made seasonal food as well as sell upcycled and vintage wares; many of which have been made by Andrea, jewellery and other local arts and crafts. In addition visitors will able to gain a sense of the buildings history by being able to see the original bellows the blacksmith would have used when making horse shoes as they lie directly behind the fireplace. Andrea says visitors can relax on the couch with cake and espresso, or lunch outside and watch the farm animals while the kids explore the garden playhouse. The Land Girl will be a terrific place for locals to grab their caffeine fix and for travellers who are making their way down to Lake Ferry and around to Cape Palliser. The Land Girl Pirinoa Coffee House, Pirinoa Station, 5772. Opening Hours: Thursday to Sunday, 9am to 3pm.

WAIRARAPA’S NEWEST SHOW HOME
A
fter a decade of building homes in the Wairarapa owners Paul and Jeanette Southey from A1 homes are excited about their beautiful new show home. “With this show home we have pulled out all the stops” says Jeanette. I have sourced product that hasn’t been seen in New Zealand and is showcased in the home. We have all the latest designs and trends so it’s well worth the visit. We will be definitely be entering this show home into the Masterbuilders show home of the year awards due to the calibre of the home and how our subcontractors have out done themselves.” Paul added that the company pride themselves on their reliability and attention to detail and they provide clients with the highest quality home. The highly skilled subcontractors have been handpicked for their quality service and craftsmanship. They are offering clients experience, knowledge and customer service that they deserve, and want all their clients to look back on their building experience and feel good about it, knowing they made the right choice and are proud to tell their friends about their experience. “We keep our clients up to date and informed with every aspect
Best Rural Cafe in NZ
I
t’s been a busy start to the year for The Clareville Bakery, on the outskirts of Carterton. Months after winning the Best Rural Cafe in the NZ Cafe of the Year awards and the overall 2015 Mindfood Producer Awards for the Visa Wellington on a Plate culinary festival, bakery owners Mike and Rose Kloeg, aren’t resting on their laurels. The couple, who opened the bakery and cafe in an historic church on SH2 in 2014, have been busy future proofing their business. They have extensively landscaped the surrounds of their new carpark and are extending the kitchen in their bakery which produces fresh, daily baked bread, buttery and flaky croissants, Danish pastries, tartlets, cakes and gourmet sandwiches. They also offer a full brunch and lunch menu. When Wairarapa Lifestyle went to print the couple had just returned from the Wellington on a Plate supplier showcase at the Michael Fowler Centre, which also included a dedicated Wairarapa winery section, and were in the midst of preparing their famous Hot Cross Buns ahead of the Easter rush. Mike, a previous winner of the Bakels National Pie competition, puts his success down to his philosophy of only baking with quality ingredients. “We don’t use any preservatives or additives in our breads, pastries and cakes, and we source the best ingredients –Belgian chocolate for our tarts and cakes, pure vanilla bean for our pastry creme, and Pure NZ Butter for our handmade puff pastry and croissants”. www.wairarapalifestyle.co.nz
of their home with our online client access tool which allows them to see expenses, progress and selections they need to make along the way. It keeps clients up to date no matter where they are, which is so important with any build. A1homes are looking forward to a great year ahead and love been part of the Wairarapa community and suggest that even if you’re not building now, come down and see the ideas at the show home.
Rimutaka Cycle Trail receives $230k funding boost
W
ellington Regional Economic Development Agency (WREDA) will receive $229,600 from the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment (MBIE), on behalf of local council partners, to invest in the Rimutaka Cycle Trail. The funding boost is the largest single amount awarded nationwide from the Maintaining the Quality of the Great Rides fund, and recognises the collaborative cross-council and agency commitment to this regional tourism venture. WREDA chief executive Chris Whelan says the government has always been a strong supporter of the Rimutaka Cycle Trail, as one of the Great Rides on the New Zealand Cycle Trail. “The ongoing success of the Rimutaka Cycle Trail is a testament to the power of partnership both across the Wellington region, and with central government. This new funding will match dollar for dollar work local and regional councils are doing to enhance the riding experience specifically for the trail, further supporting the growth in accommodation and tour businesses the trail has already generated.” Bruce Hodgins, manager, parks and gardens for Hutt City Council, says the
money will be used to widen and improve the trail surface in a number of sections. Jimmy Young, eastern principal ranger, with the Greater Wellington Regional Council, says the Rimutaka Cycle Trail endorses the region’s status as a quality cycling destination. “Not only is the Rimutaka Cycle Trail a boost to the visitor economy, it makes a significant contribution to the outdoor recreation options for residents. The ongoing support of the government will allow us to enhance and preserve this unique public asset. Since the launch the sections of the trail such as the Rimutaka Rail Trail and Hutt River Trail have enjoyed a significant increase in cycling use, which fulfils the objectives of the respective councils involved in this project.” Wairarapa Lifestyle Magazine AUTUMN/WINTER 2016 Issue #40- 5

GREYTOWN: one step ahead Boutique shopping, great food and colonial architecture help connect visitors with Greytown’s history and make it the perfect “getaway” destination.
G
reytown has always stood apart from other shopping destinations thanks to its distinctive boutiques and variety of cafes and restaurants serving up seasonal menus. However recent changes along Main Street are ensuring it stays ahead of the times and that’s music to the ears of Destination Wairarapa marketing manager Barb Hyde. “With its small, owner operated shops that are high quality and are distinctive, Greytown is the antithesis of big box shopping or bland and samey malls you find in many large centres,” she says. “Complementing this is the huge range of places to eat that stretch from the north end of town to the south. When you combine these factors with Greytown’s gorgeous colonial architecture, its tree-lined wide streets and close proximity to Wellington it makes for a really neat day out.” Siddhi Smith, the owner of long-standing Auckland based business Encore which sells an extensive range of recycled designer clothing, says she took one look at Greytown and knew it was where she wanted to be. “I had wanted to get out of Auckland for a while, the traffic and the lifestyle were too fast and I wanted a relaxed lifestyle. I’d never been to the Wairarapa before and last year visited friends in Masterton. We came down here and I just went wow! This place is amazing,” she explains on the eve of opening her second Encore store in the ‘The Hub’ development in the centre of Greytown. “Since moving here I’ve been welcomed into the community, I can walk or cycle to work and the surrounding area is really incredible.” Encore will sell New Zealand and international designer labels sourced from Auckland. “You name it (label) and we’ve got it,” says Siddhi. The Hub is a contemporary development that incorporates art deco and colonial design features that complement the already established boutiques, homeware stores and restaurants housed in the pretty colonial buildings that line the town’s charming Main Street. Creative Classes in the Wairarapa Indulge over autumn and winter and get the creative juices flowing. A cook and a chef from both ends of the Wairarapa valley have opened their rural homes to students and Di Lusk is literally painting up a storm, sharing some of her secrets and some handy tips of the trade

T
he Chef, Travis Clive-Griffin, owner of Salute Restaurant in Greytown, launched his “At Home with Salute” late last year. Up the valley at his lifestyle property in Gladstone, Travis offers his cooking students tricks of the trade, time-saving short cuts and golden nuggets of insider knowledge from a professional restaurant chef. With his wife and Saluté co-owner Eve, Travis shows classes of up to 10 students how to take fresh local ingredients and use his expert knowledge to turn them into imaginative dishes. Wairarapa products from Greytown Butchery, Parkvale Mushrooms, Kingsmede Cheese, Lot 8 Olive Oil, Masterton Seafoods and Pinehaven Orchards are stocked up in Travis and Eve’s own kitchen for classes such as ‘Tapas and Shared Plates’ ‘Exotic Middle East and All Her Spice’ and ‘Dessert Heaven’. “I love the enthusiasm of the students,’’ Travis says. “Everyone is free to ask questions and bounce ideas in our relaxed and intimate atmosphere.’’ At the end of a class, Travis and Eve sit down to enjoy the tasty fruits of labour with their guests. Travis’s professional knife skills are just one feature of his classes being talked about by past and repeat students. he Cook, Mary Biggs, owner of the lemon flavoured cordial and condiment business Lavender’s Green, has started the Country Cooking School at Te Puhi, her 154 year old farm house 3kms out of Featherston and 50 minutes from Wellington. Mary is a Cordon Bleu trained cook with four children (who have now “flown the nest”) and a busy corporate husband. “I have been cooking for years for clients, family and friends and I’ve known moments of cooking elation, boredom and despair,” she says. “I have always loved to cook and to garden, and now it’s time to share my experience of the country and the gifts, beauty and the bounty of Te Puhi with new and old friends. “Based at our farm in rural Featherston my students will learn simple, gluten free and seasonal recipes using foraged home-grown produce and locally sourced ingredients that will become go-to recipes for them when they get home,” Mary says. “I’m offering an intimate, fun class for eight people and we start the day with morning tea and home baking, followed by a foray into the vegetable garden and chook run to gather the freshest ingredients for a great lunch. The table is set beautifully with crisp linens and we eat lunch and drink local wines and celebrate the good life!” “I encourage my students when possible, to catch the train to Featherston. They are met at the station and chauffeured to and from the farm so that they can totally relax. Classes are available during the week (9.30am - 4pm) and at the weekend (11am - 5pm) or by appointment.
“I want to give my students a beautiful, relaxing, entertaining day out where they can experience the joy of country living. I love living in the country, I love living in the South Wairarapa and everything I make in the kitchen is made with love. I really want to share authentic, generous, country living with friends and visitors”. For further information view www.lavendersgreen.co.nz

Happy to get her goat “Goats always make me smile” says Amanda Goodman, “and I love goat cheese.” Her new and oh-so-quirky specialist brand of goat cheese, The Drunken Nanny, is selling fast around the region.

et’s get the obvious question out of the way. The Drunken Nanny name started as a throwaway joke from a Martinborough friend, whose husband happens to be a winemaker. Last year’s drought was the worst to hit the Goodman’s South Wairarapa family farm. Her friend joked she could feed the goats grape skins, one idea sparked another and the brand was born. “It’s fun and lively with some personality; the branding and packaging by Jo Lysaght (Satellite Design, Greytown) is very stylish and colourful. We get lots of compliments,” she explains. Amanda has history with goats. Her parents David and Wendy Fairbrother diversified the family sheep and beef farm into Angora goats in the 1980s, and the infrastructure and animal husbandry knowledge is still there. When Amanda and Lindsey took over the farm, her parents carved out their own piece and built next door. Four years ago, four-legged kids Apples and Chelsea joined twolegged kids Emily, Sam and Phoebe and became part of the family. “My addiction grew,” Amanda laughs, “so adding goats to our farm portfolio was inevitable. We’re also keen foodies and saw strong opportunities for a local goat cheese. “It was also something Lindsey and I could do from home, help diversify the farm, and involve the children who adore the goats,” she says. Amanda trained at the New Zealand Cheese School in Putararu. As well as practical cheese-making, Amanda absorbed all aspects of setting up a cheese business covering everything from health and safety, fanatical hygiene, economics and marketing. “With our small budget, we had to research the market potential carefully. My marketing and tourism degree from Victoria University and a post-graduate Diploma in Tourism from Otago came in handy, plus years managing the Martinborough Visitor Centre.” Self-trained, Lindsey milks 25 goats, with capacity for 75 next year. He’s looking forward to doubling the facilities to a 4-nanny stand next year, as goats are milked daily. They are dried off for 10 weeks each May. Investing in a spanking clean, state-of-the-art, all-stainless steel Cheese Room, with filtered air, was essential. Late in 2015 their 500-page Risk Management Programme was approved, covering all environmental, hygiene, health and safety requirements and a

constant testing regime .. thus allowing The Drunken Nanny to be sold to the public. Currently, The Drunken Nanny cheese is available at Martinborough Wine Merchants and P&K in Martinborough, as well as the Carterton and Te Kairanga markets. The short term aim is to expand her outlets, without over-stretching production. “We are focusing on soft, fresh cheeses for now, as they are so versatile and people love them. Lush and Frisky Feta are our most popular so far. Lush is lovely with smoked salmon on pizza or just crackers, and mixed with lemon curd makes a wonderfully sweet cheesecake-like cream for tartlets. “Cheeky Camembert (deliciously tangy and runny) and Dancing Does (fresh with a soft white mould) are coming along well. Washed with local sauvignon blanc, the Savvy Washed Rind cheese oozes luxuriously, while The Pinnacles (rolled in French ash and matured) is very special.” Will the herd eagerly anticipate the 2016 grape harvest, and the prospect of those grape skins in the feed? www.thedrunkennanny.co.nz

Simon Burt Hamish & Juliet Qualtrough with some of their canine friends at The Q’s Zoo Animal ResQ.
The Q’s Zoo – An Animal ResQ Hamish and Juliet Qualtrough’s love for animals – particularly the abandoned and neglected ones – is unwavering. And they have adopted a busy Wairarapa lifestyle by caring for and re-homing them.By Simon Burt

ight dogs, twelve kittens, twelve cats, a flock of sheep, five horses, some chooks and rabbits, one goat, a cow and Speckles the lamb all enjoy the run of the Qualtroughs’ rural Masterton property. Many of them ‘rescues’, most are here to stay, part of the family, but for the sake of the couple’s sanity, and to partly cover expenses, some are available for adoption. Veterinarian Hamish, unable to practice due to severe arthritis, and Juliet, a former SPCA animal inspector and manager, have always collected animals. Hamish’s Wellington vet practice would not euthanase healthy animals, “so I often took them home.” Juliet adopted the really sad cases from the Masterton SPCA shelter, “the ones unlikely to find another home.” When the shelter closed in May 2015, “word got around that we would take them,” says Juliet. “First one a week, then two, then too many to absorb into our family.” So ‘The Q’s Zoo’ animal rescue was born. They’ve had up to 29 dogs and over 60 cats in their care at various times. Many are fostered out then returned to be de-sexed and treated ready for adoption. Juliet says it’s good to get them used to different families and other pets. The family environment at the Qualtrough home (they have a teenage boy and twin 7-year-old girls) is also a useful ‘temperament test’ of the animals to determine their suitability for a permanent new home. The Qualtroughs are “extremely thorough” when vetting potential adopters. “It’s very important to match people and animals, particularly dogs. We do property inspections and for renters we follow up with landlords by phone as well as getting their approval in writing”. All enquirers will have Juliet’s comprehensive contracts to complete, including a clause that “if anything goes wrong, the animal comes back to us. It hasn’t happened yet.”
18 - Wairarapa Lifestyle Magazine AUTUMN/WINTER 2016 Issue #40
There is a fee for anyone wanting to adopt. “It doesn’t cover our costs but it’s a bit of a speed bump, makes people think about what they’re committing to.” The rescue is an expensive and time-consuming labour of love for the busy couple, but there are benefactors out there. “Vet Services have been absolutely wonderful,” says Hamish, “and Carterton New World give us all their pet food credits, as do Masterton Pet Store. Several of the premium dog food brands donate damaged or returned stock.” They have collection buckets at Kuripuni Sports Bar and there are animal lovers who want to give them cash. “We want to be as transparent as possible so if people want to donate money we ask them to put it on our vet’s account.” he lack of thought that some people give to taking on a pet can be frustrating, Juliet admits. “I try very hard not to be judgmental when someone brings in an unwanted pet, but we do get some pathetic excuses.” However, the trend is for fewer animals being surrendered to organisations like the SPCA, as animal education kicks in. “Ultimately we’d like to do ourselves out of a job. We’d love to have the time and resources to spend at the front end – microchipping campaigns, desexing campaigns etc. The ambulance at the bottom of the cliff we provide can put a lot of strain on your compassion. We took this on with the right intentions, we don’t want to get to the position where it’s the people who are wearing us down. It’s never the animals.” For these committed animal rescuers, the feedback from successful placements keeps them going - their Facebook page bulges with messages from happy adoptive families. And to truly demonstrate the Qualtroughs’ dedication, their 17-year old has moved out of his room into a caravan so they can accommodate more cats. For donations or more information contact Juliet on 06 370 2442.

Finding unexpected family roots
It’s all go at Martinborough’s StoneCutter Vineyard currently. Anthony and Carole Olsen have brought energy, ideas and international business experience to their new vineyard, and to their surprise found family connections. Susan McLeary explains.

he recently-erected sign at StoneCutter Vineyard ‘s Todds Road gate welcomes visitors with its new post and rail fence .The smart yet rustic look continues through the recently renovated tasting room, timber shelving for wine bottles with new labels, and the extensively remodelled homestead for Anthony and Carole’s new life, among newly planted vines. The StoneCutter name remains, with a new pounamu (greenstone) image added to the stylish label. “Pounamu is treasured for its strength and beauty, as a sign of status or power, and considered sacred. For me, the pounamu symbolises my family connections: my father has links to Ngati Tuwharetoa, Ngati Rangitihi and Ngati Awa, and my mother to South Island iwi Waitaha and Ngai Tahu ,” Anthony explains. “It also ties to my professional life as a sediment scientist, geomorphologist and hydrologist, and currently an RMA Commissioner. It’s about respecting and understanding soils and rivers, and at a personal level links to the west coast South Island river, Arahura, which is the greatest source of pounamu. “My big surprise, however, was discovering I also had family roots here in the Wairarapa. “My great-grandparents emigrated from Denmark with their five children, and in 1874 settled at Kaiwaiwai. We know it now for the rather forlorn Kaiwaiwai Hall on SH53 from Featherston, but back then it was called Heifer Station. My grandfather was born there, and this was all news to me. Emotional news. “Visiting StoneCutter for the first time was a good and welcoming feeling. I had no idea I had family ties to the district, but finding out made me feel even more at home. That sense of belonging is really cool,” he smiles. “We both love the openness, the light and the stunning views out over the Tararuas and the range of outlooks,” adds Carole. “The light and air is different here; it has an artistic quality. Carole has her own Danish connections, having lived in

Denmark for seven years with her ex-husband and two ‘half Danish/half Kiwi’ children. As a systems and values auditor for large international companies, Carole lived and worked in London, Copenhagen, Tokyo and Moscow before returning to New Zealand. She and Anthony met in Tauranga three years ago, and moved to Martinborough in July last year. Smart and project-oriented, Anthony and Carole are handson wherever possible. “We opened the house up, adding a new kitchen and big sunny deck so we can look out over the Tararuas, keeping the overall rustic look with corrugated iron. “Since buying StoneCutter we have personally planted additional Merlot grapevines and added a new Spanish grape variety Alberino. We can’t wait for our own first vintage, and to put roots down in this lovely, lively wine village,” they agree. ounamu (greenstone) is treasured in Maori culture. Legend says that Hoanga (cutting stones) were found near Castlepoint, generations ago. Their mana (prestige) increased over the years as they cut and shaped pounamu, by hand, with great care. The current owners of StoneCutter Vineyard adopted the pounamu image to symbolise the time and care taken by ancient Maori to create their treasures. This is echoed in their care for their vines and creating hand-made wines. Anthony and Carole “honour the vineyard’s heritage; only making wine from grapes growing on their land. At StoneCutter, we make wine carefully”.

Taratahi Business Development Manager has passion for Vocational Training
this year's students on the Tautane farm.
If you ask Taratahi Agriculture Training Centre’s new business development and marketing manager Richard Wanhill what his passion is you get an energy laden reply in a nano second. “It’s vocational training.”
I
t’s a passion rooted in his own success. By his own admission he was a boy destined for trouble, when fate saw him end up on a vocational training course as an arborist. “I found out that I was one of those people who learns by using their hands and doing things.” That practical ability and focus has also seen him reach the pinnacle of success in his chosen sport of competitive tree climbing which is popular in over 40 countries. His 20-year career has seen him set up a training business, Thought Planters which now boasts a global reach. His success is based on designing practical courses that industry wants and needs. It has seen him travel New Zealand and the world and set up offices in Singapore and Sydney. It’s that global excellence he has in his sights for Taratahi. “I want Taratahi to be recognised nationally and internationally as the centre of excellence for vocational agricultural training. To get there we will need to forge stronger relationships with our stakeholders so we deliver the courses they want, when they want them.” Richard says this will mean that real learning on real farms will produce students who are trained in best practice. “Then we can send them out into the primary sector where they will make a difference to the future of farming.” He says students will not only be involved in learning practical farming skills but also the business of farming, as well as being involved in research projects.
22 - Wairarapa Lifestyle Magazine AUTUMN/WINTER 2016 Issue #40
“Taratahi is already involved in many research projects and being at the leading edge of new developments means our students can apply the latest knowledge in the primary sector workforce. He is also keen to see Taratahi expand its international vocational training programmes, that sees Taratahi tutors in demand for offshore agricultural training and consulting. Richard and his wife Jacqui are looking forward to becoming Wairarapa residents. The wild coast will sate his other passions for surfing and diving and of course an appreciation for good food and wine.

Fresh Ideas at the Deli
Long hours, hard work and exacting customers …..why would anyone want to own their own café? For chef Lufi and husband Nick Thomson, the new owners of Greytown’s Main Street Café & Delicatessen, the answer is simple: creativity. Their transformation of this iconic 1880s building shows how it’s possible to move ahead boldly while still respecting the past. By Anne Taylor.
I
f you’re a past fan of Main Street, you’ll recognise lots of features from the ‘old days’. Cupids still cavort on the azure blue floor in the cosy north-facing space, and the historic façade is intact, though with a fresh coat of paint. The home baking, pies and preserves that first cemented the Deli’s reputation are still a feature. But where there was once a staircase and wall dividing the café from the deli, there’s now a bright chandelier and open plan space for dining. Light floods in and there’s plenty of room to browse the popular deli goods and international specialty foods. This is no bland makeover. The interior is sunny yellow with pink and orange trim (former lawyer Nick insisted on the pink), and outside is a freshly landscaped courtyard garden edged with young michelia trees. What was arguably the smallest toilet in town, tucked to the right of the main entrance, is now a pint-sized but effective office. The difference for the wait staff is just as dramatic. “Previously, staff had to go through narrow corridors and backrooms to access the kitchen so we have made it much more efficient to work in, as well as bringing the kitchen up to modern standards,” says Nick. The renovation took three months and given # 88 has variously been home to an architect, hairdresser and pioneering family as well as an eatery over its 120+ year history, it’s not surprising that a few secrets were uncovered. “We found a large safe under the deli floorboards that would have been around 80 years old,” says Nick. It defeated an engineer with specialist cutting equipment and there was no time to call in even bigger guns so the floorboards went back down again. The mystery about its contents remains just that. Now Main Street Café is in the grips of a very 21st century phenomenon: a craze for quinoa and Lufi’s ‘raw energy salads’. “I’m pleased they’re taking off because I’m interested in healthy food,” says Lufi.
24 - Wairarapa Lifestyle Magazine AUTUMN/WINTER 2016 Issue #40
“When I first came to New Zealand, I wanted to do things differently. My people are big people and we need to look after our health. It’s important for everyone.” Lufi was a pioneer in her family - the first to be sent from her home in Samoa to New Zealand at the age of nine, to look after a relative’s children. “My mother told me ‘Be a good girl and work hard.’” She took this to heart, working as a nurse in Rotorua after high school before moving to work in the kitchen at Taumaranui Hospital where she became executive chef. She relocated to Palmerston North with her young family and ran her own café for some years. More recently, she worked as a chef and became the executive chef at the International Pacific College, which produced around 30,000 meals per month for the mainly Japanese students. With regular special occasions for staff, students and parents, this was an introduction to the world of Thai, Cambodian and other Asian cuisine - plus the central role of fresh vegetables: “The Japanese students would have vegetables for breakfast, lunch and dinner,” she recalls. When the couple decided on a change of scene, Greytown seemed right. Nick was familiar with the area and getting to know people was easy. Lufi had been working at the Main Street Deli for eight months before the opportunity to buy the business came up. As the latest addition to the local foodie scene, the couple’s ethos of honest, homemade food, often based on local produce, seems to be striking a chord. “We make all our food on the premises, even our sauces and patés, so we know what’s going into our food. People seem to like that,” says Lufi. It makes sense to keep the best of the ‘old’ when bringing in the new.

Not an accidental business In sub-zero temperature, Martinborough viticulturist Dave Shepherd was out protecting grapevines from frost damage. Grateful for some hot food, he took to Instagram with “Shout out to Cartel Food for their fab tucker in these cold nights”. Susan McLeary has the story behind the burrito. ason and Melissa Philips created Cartel Food Company. They have the entrepreneurial gene. As a BCA student at Victoria University, Jason traded cars and produced snowboard clothing, later adding residential property development skills, and importing and distributing an energy drink. Melissa trained as a chef but realised the business world appealed more (and was more family-friendly). Her 15 years in retail management included setting up, opening and managing large format stores before her most recent role as sales manager for half of New Zealand Lotteries 1200 outlets. Somewhere she found time to do an MBA. Keen foodies, the couple always wanted to build a premium food business together. They’d lived in Martinborough in 2003 doing up and selling a house, then again for a year when their first daughter Matilda was born. Although they returned to Wellington for work, the wine village environment appealed. Coming back was always in their minds. The food business idea grew. As a teenager living in California, Jason discovered Mexican foods, but returning to New Zealand noticed it had never really taken off here. Fast forwarding 22 years, New Zealanders now know and enjoy burritos and quesadillas. The time was right. The challenge was to make and sell a quality product, with real ingredients. “The Eureka moment was realising we could freeze the hand-made burritos. This opened up supermarket frozen foods opportunities; less risky than the fresh category. So Jason created and tested recipes, mostly on friends we knew would give honest feedback. “We decided to go for it, sold our house to start the business, moved back to Martinborough in early 2015 and opted for the quality lifestyle. Scarlett was 5 months old,” Jason explained. “Our experience meant we know intimately how supermarkets work, what they need and how we could make the product appealing. We are not an accidental business. “We chose Cartel Food Company because it’s a bit edgy. Some people were a bit nervous about the reference to organised crime, but it’s not been an issue with our customers. “Our designer Catherine Baker (The Brand Depot) created our vibrant colourful look. Cartel is highly visible in a supermarket freezer! “ To keep costs manageable, for several months they enterprisingly rented working space out the back at Martinborough’s Providore Cafe on Sundays and weeknights, hand-rolling and freezing over 10,000 burritos. “We’ve grown from 2 to 30 retail outlets in just seven months,” Jason and Melissa say proudly. “P&K in Martinborough is a great supporter, as are Moore Wilson in Wellington and Fresh Choice in Greytown. We are in Auckland,

Tauranga, South Wairarapa, Wellington and Nelson, with more to come. “Needing to expand to meet demand, we contracted production to a good manufacturer, while we focus on sales and marketing. We talk retailers’ language: understanding their issues around reliability, volume, delivery, presentation and quality assurance. It helps. “Our commercial experience has been vital in growing Cartel so fast. For example, we successfully added a Chicken, Chilli and Lime burrito after discovering chicken is New Zealand’s biggest selling meat,” says Melissa. A keen surfer, Jason loves the Wairarapa coast. What new ideas are bubbling in his entrepreneurial mind as he catches the next wave?

the Team at ARATOI Three years ago, Alice Hutchison swapped jobs curating and directing at high profile galleries in Los Angeles to become director at Aratoi, Masterton, recently delivering the significant ‘Featherston Camp 1916-2016: The Story of a Remarkable Achievement’ exhibition. She told Anne Taylor that the venue’s success is down to a small, multi-skilled team.
F
orget top down management, “we just don’t have enough people to be hierarchical here!” laughs Alice. Her own skills in fundraising were key, enabling Aratoi to secure a substantial grant from the WW1 Lotteries Fund and bring social history curator Tony Rasmussen on board for the project. “This exhibition was a huge test for us all and we had to draw on many specific skills to bring it to life,” says Alice.
A case in point is Asher Raawiri Newbery, the newest team member. He spent hours in the Aratoi workshop – a space he is tasked with maintaining – crafting metal mounts to support weaponry in the current show, and he’s just built 26 moveable walls for an exhibition in Featherston (see below). Graduating in 2014 with a Masters in Maori Visual Art from Toioho ki Apiti, Massey, he is the go-to person for exhibiting artists in his role as exhibition coordinator / technician. “I have to make the material look as good as possible while also ensuring it’s safe from damage and theft. “I like the physical nature of the work. Even changing a light bulb can be a big job when the light is 8 meters up! It sounds weird but I love seeing the bubble on my level hit the centre every time.” Susanah Shadbolt commutes from Manawatu two days a week for her role as Aratoi’s registrar / curator, which she juggles with teaching part time on the Postgraduate Diploma in Museum Studies programme at Massey University. “I love the landscape on that drive and how that manifests in local artists’ work,” she says. Her international experience includes working at the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam, and she has also worked at Te Manawa, Palmerston North, and directed the city’s Community Arts Centre Square Edge. “The word ‘curator’ is from the Latin ‘to care’, which I think is appropriate,” she says. “I care about objects and works of art and their stories, and like to bring these stories to life, by researching and shaping exhibitions that connect objects and people.” She has to have both the big vision, and control over myriad details - from contracts, loan agreements and condition reports to freight, packing and labelling. “The essence of my role is to provide physical as well as intellectual access to objects and art works, while at the same time ensuring their safety.” 28 - Wairarapa Lifestyle Magazine AUTUMN/WINTER 2016 Issue #40
Bronwyn Reid is the longest serving member of the team, having started out at the Wairarapa Arts Centre in 1996. She continued when this morphed into Aratoi in the early 2000s. “I was completing an art and design course at the local polytech when I started working as a weekend staff member here.” Learning entirely on the job, she is now collections manager and on intimate terms with the hundreds of artworks and historic taonga in Aratoi’s collection, meaning that she lives a “busy but largely unseen life” at the venue. She has been responsible for exhibition curation, design and installation, and researching and writing for history exhibitions. Discovering the stories behind items in the collection has been the enduring highlight: “The best aspect of this has been a greatly enhanced understanding of Maori culture and history,” she says. Visitor services coordinator Anthea Birch has “a passion for beautiful objects” and holds an honours degree in ceramic design from the then Central St Martins College of Art, London. With work as a swimwear and textile designer also under her belt, she learnt the art of great retail display from some of the best – at The Conran Shop in London – making her ideally placed to manage Aratoi’s shop. “I try to bring what I learnt overseas to showcase our local artists,” she says. She also maintains the website, designs marketing materials, and manages the logistics of the school holiday programme. “I love seeing how people enjoy the exhibitions, hearing their feedback and seeing their responses to what they see in the shop. It’s really all about community.” In a nutshell, Carol Parkinson’s job as finance manager is “balancing the books, and ensuring hard-fought-for funding from councils and grant providers is appropriately managed”. The nutshell analogy is also apt given the small team she now works with quite a change from her past roles in corporate and accountancy agencies. There is no typical day for Adam West-Watson who joined the team in 2006 and is the Saturday to Monday presence at the front desk. With a background in picture framing and running his own gallery in Nelson, he is used to the necessary multitasking: “I might be sweeping the floor one minute then receiving an item for the collection from the public the next. I enjoy the fact that we can create a calm, peaceful environment for people, while in the background it’s often ‘all hands on the pump’ to make that happen.” All the staff acknowledge the role of the Friends who volunteer their time to help staff the front desk, work at openings and fundraise. It’s truly all hands on deck at Aratoi. • Featherston Camp 1916-2016: The Story of a Remarkable Achievement until 31 July. • Farewell Zealandia: Forgotten Kiwi Songs of World War One. ANZAC Hall, Featherston, 5 March – 11 April. • NZ Festival Writers Week: Simon Winchester & The Pacific Ocean. Aratoi, 9 March, 7-8pm. • Denise Batchelor: just one breath, Aratoi, 12 March – 22 May. Trading in sea views for mountain views was all part of the big plan for an enterprising couple who have set up a unique business from their new Wairarapa home.

THE ART OF REINVENTION
eremy Dempsey laughs when he says he’s onto his third career in nearly as many decades. “They say you should change your job every 10 years and I think I’m almost there,” he says from the Masterton home he shares with his wife and business partner Eireann and their two girls. The family had always enjoyed visiting the Wairarapa, before choosing to make it their home in 2014. “We’d been coming here for decades camping, and always loved that buzz you got when you came over the hill and saw all the open spaces, the big trees and the views of those mountains – I mean they are incredible,” says Jeremy, who had a previous career writing music for TV and film based at Avalon Studios in Lower Hutt before setting up a boutique cinema in Waikanae. “After spending a lot of time living on the Kapiti Coast we decided it was time to trade sea views for mountain views.” Since moving to Masterton in 2014, the couple’s shared love of design and vintage furniture has been the driving force behind Out of the Attic, a vintage styling and event hire business. Over the last year they have amassed an incredible collection of furniture, decorations, glass ware, soft furnishings and unique outdoor sports equipment that can be used to “dress-up” an intimate dinner party, a wedding ceremony, film or theatre sets or be used in photo shoots or themed retail displays. Before launching their website with the help of Dan Broughton from Wairarapa Web Design, earlier this year the couple spent eight months fossicking around the North Island’s antique markets, boot fairs, reclamation yards and auction houses to find their treasures. On a few instances they even sourced items from overseas. “It was really tricky to get going so we narrowed our focus down to a rustic colonial style that we think suits us and suits the region. We went to shop after shop, trawled TradeMe until we got what we wanted, then with a few items we had to look further afield for. For example finding nice quality vintage croquet balls was hard … we had to buy those in from the United States and the same with quality old Champagne buckets … that was another one we went overseas for,” reflects Jeremy. The couple now have over 1000 pieces in their collection that fit under categories like chandeliers, photo booth backdrops, crates
30 - Wairarapa Lifestyle Magazine AUTUMN/WINTER 2016 Issue #40
and boxes, furnishings, lawn games, linen and table ware. Some items are rather eye-catching including the 1923 church pews, handmade lace table runners and crystal glasses. They’ve also come up with package ideas as a first point of inspiration for clients, such as the Lolly Table or Vintage Lawn Games package. “I love aesthetics, forms and combinations and drawing inspiration from what people want,” says Jeremy. “Styling an event or photo shoot – whether it be a wedding, a high tea party or special family celebration, is a big part of what we do but we enjoy the process of working together to achieve the overall look.” The couple have a busy few months ahead attending wedding shows, fairs and local events to get their name out. But one thing is for certain. They are excited about beginning a new career in a new town. And equally excited to get the chance to turn their clients’ dreams into reality - one piece of furniture at a time. For more information visit www.outoftheattic.co.nz

TORA CHALLENGE: Returns to event calendar
The Tora Challenge, to be held on Sunday, 1st May 2016, features three course options including a 6km walk/run, 18km walk/run and 32km run. It will see participants cover a stunning route used by hundreds of people each year doing the Tora Coastal Walk, New Zealand’s longest running private multi-day walk.
K
iri Elworthy, one of the owners of the Tora Coastal Walk which will celebrate its 22nd anniversary this October, is looking forward to holding the event again after it made its debut in 2014. “The feedback from the first event was so positive we’ve decided to bring the Tora Challenge back in 2016, which coincides with the end of our 21st season of the Tora Coastal Walk,” says Kiri. “We know people loved the course which took them over private hill country and coastal farms, through river valleys and native bush and along the dramatic Tora coastline. Not to mention the terrific rural hospitality they received at the finish line. We’re very excited to announce the event is back on and are looking forward to welcoming people back to our slice of paradise.” The Tora Challenge will begin from Stony Bay Lodge on the Tora Coast, a 45 minute drive from the wine village of Martinborough. The architecturally designed, beach front lodge has uninterrupted views north and south along the wild and unpopulated coastline. Participants will then complete either the 6km family friendly Coastal Cruiser run or walk along the coastline; the new 18km Reef to Ridge run or walk that takes people along the coastline for 6km, before ascending into native bush and over private farmland before looping back to Stony Bay Lodge, or the Big Kahuna, a 32km run that covers the entire Tora Coastal Walk. This challenging course features 6km of the Tora Coast, a 12km run to Whakapata Cottage then 14km of hill climbs and descents, with breath-taking views of the Pacific Ocean as their reward. “The Tora Challenge caters to all ages and abilities – from groups and friends wanting to tackle something new to hard core runners looking for an exciting challenge set in incredible scenery,” she says. “Also, our charity this year is the Life Flight Trust. So by supporting the Tora Challenge, all participants will be supporting this vitally important service in our community.”

LORNA POTTER BEAUTY & HAIR What professionals do is so much more than just applying make up to someone’s face. If it was that simple, everyone would be able to do their own make up, and would be walking around looking flawless at all times. Long after the preparations are done, your vows said, the first kiss as a married couple was had, and the celebrating is over, all you were going to be left with is your photos and the wonderful memories of your wedding day. Those pictures are going to be the only tangible thing that you will be able to look at with fondness. The decision to hire a professional make up artist for your wedding day is an important one, and is completely up to you. But when all is said and done, with the proper skills, the right techniques and tools it can really help tie it all together to get the look and feel of your perfect day.

FRENCH VILLAGE For a relaxed wedding venue, the lodge at the French Village is an ideal choice. Set in regenerating native bush, with the Mangatarere river close by, it is private, special and unique. No cell phone coverage is a bonus, you have everyone’s attention. The newlywed couple don’t have to go far either for photo opportunities. Some couples opt to be wed under a massive tree, have canapés and bubbles in the courtyard, then move upstairs for the speeches, dinner (breakfast) and music. Others prefer a marquee to dance the night away in. The Lodge also sleeps 16, so the wedding party can arrive a day early and decorate away, and there is even the option of bringing a tent and staying on site. Local taxi services provide shuttles for arrivals and departures, so that everyone gets home safely. Susie Shaw is easy to work with and happy to discuss options.

Taste of Autumn - a Dining Guide Saluté is celebrating their 15th year and it’s a great excuse for a party. The weekend of 21-24 April will be filled with festivities, from a fabulous long lunch on Friday for $45, which will include 3 courses and wine, to a degustation dinner on Saturday night with all the Saluté favorites from the last 15 years. Bookmark your calendar as it will be a weekend to remember. Reflecting upon the past, owners Travis and Eve Clive-Griffin, have many memories, from hilarious moments, right to the other end of the scale. When they returned from Australia in 2001 they opened Saluté offering great food, with excellent service. Consistency was the cornerstone of their business and Saluté became busier. The reviewers were very kind with their pens and the obvious happened, the ‘little country restaurant’ became a bustling provincial restaurant. As a result Saluté became known as the restaurant for special occasions. In 2009 it was time for a change and Bar Saluté was launched with a new look and menu that centered on an amazing tapas selection with mains as an option. The bar has now become a Wairarapa institution and the restaurant and sunny courtyard is a welcoming place. Iberia Restaurante is located in Queen Street, Masterton. With a cinema across the street and other cafes nearby, its location has become a busy little hub of town. Iberia encourages its visiors to utelise its large lounge style seting as their own, and is open 7 days a week, from early morning to late evening and can accommodate large groups easily. Always warm and comfortable in winter, and cool and fresh in summer with its doors wide open to the street, Iberia is a great place for coffee, brunch, lunch, dinner, or for a catch up with friends over a glass of wine. Its extensive modern European menu caters for everyone with
vegetarian and gluten free options abundant, including its traditional and goumet pizza menus. Iberia Restaurante has a great range of Wairarapa wines, such as Paddy Borthwick, Johner Estate, Gladstone Vineyard, Loopline, Landsdowne Estate, Margrain, Paulownia Estate and many more and takes pride in serving their top quality local wines. With gorgeous cabinet treats during the day, as well as a brunch menu and dinner menu, fantastic Mojo coffee made by excellent trained baristas, and priding themselves on customer service, Iberia is simply a place you must visit

On Friday and Saturday nights the cafe transforms into a little bistro, with candle light and table cloths and a menu of regional and French home cooking.
