Clowning Around is a personal project, multimedia based using Cinema4D, After Effects, Illustrator and Photoshop. It is a time-based project, that involves charcater rigging, animation and 3D-Modeling.

SURREALISM I n the 1920’s the Surrealist Movement began in Europe. It’s been said that the Surrealist Movement branched off from the Dada Movement and was influenced by the works of the psychologist Sigmund Freud. And though it started by writers, painters later opted in. The artists involved in this newer movement produced works of art while embracing new creative methods, including creating art while tapped into a subconscious state combined with work made in a conscious state. And whether it was art created while in a self induced dream like state or pieces created with techniques leading to art made by chance, whichever the method these pieces of work became a part of what is referred to as the Surrealism Movement. The surrealists, who were not afraid of embracing these newfound methods of creating, did just that. They created works that express oneself being in a

dream like state. And some surrealists created with an emphasis of automatism, or free form practices and sometimes touched it up with a twist of realism. Surrealism targeted at social and political revolution and was once associated to the Communist party. Andre Brenton wrote the Surrealist Manifesto in 1924 in Paris. Brenton, a poet, critic, and trained psychiatrist describes his ideas in connecting art, created by the unconscious force which drives artist to create, with creations made consciously. It was in 1927 when Belgian artist, Rene Magritte moved from Brussels to Paris. Magritte was a prominent figure in the Surrealist movement. Magritte style encompassed erotic characters or body parts in fantasy or dream like settings. His works are described as a mixture of visual automatism and illusionistic. Amongst Magritte and Brenton, artists involved in this extraordinary movement included Max Ernst, Andre Masson, Joan Miro,

Salvador Dali, and Man Ray. Max Ernst, a self trained painter, used a technique called frottage, grattage, and another method called decalcomania to tap into his subconscious. Frottage is a rubbing technique where the texture of an object is rubbed onto a piece of paper or canvas by using graphite to make the imprint. “Grattage is where he would scratch the painting with pointed tools to make it more tactile. Decalcomania is when he would press paint between two canvases and then pull the canvases apart, which created ridges and bubbles of pigment. The suggestive images were left as is or sometimes completed or added on to.� Ernst expressed his feelings on true subconscious art as being art created by insane people. FIG. 03

Logo Design Logo design is very important to the designer and the client. It is the mark that will be branded constantly in letterheads, business cards and merchandise. It is important to have a respectable knowledge of logo design. Understanding the process of drawing until the mark has been formed. At times when designing a logo, I keep drawing roughly a hundred thumbnails until I have found at least twenty worthy sketches. I will later edit, manipulate and alter the sketch to a rough composite. Working in black and white first then adding color during the finalized stages. Usually having twenty or so different logo’s so the client could have a variety of logo’s to select. Often the client will want to merge elements from one logo to the other. Simplicity is the most important function when designing a logo.

RECRUITING ELEMENTARY KIDS Recruiting elementary kids was a student project from actual publication article. Students had to submit illustrations, as if they were applying for a freelance illustration article. Started as a sketch then later mocked-up into a bigger rough composition. I scanned my sketches then painted them in Photoshop. I had come up the idea of trying to convey a message using no words. That is when I decided to make a collage of elements that were referenced in the article. Like bullets, video games and the Armed Services. I added texture from my saved water color paper towels.

COLOR THEORY

In Johannes Itten’s book, The Art of Color, he unveils discoveries on color contrast, composition, color hues, intuition practices, the science of color, and emotions caused by color combination. He supports his claims of color giving life, by providing examples of shapes and objects without color and explains that color needs to have some magical mystery it needs to project the image that color goes on, out and beyond. Itten is knowledgeable of many cultures and explains how a purple or violet face on a painting can intensify expressions and have symbolic meaning amongst different cultures. Itten sheds light on the effects color has on our eyes and brain resulting in various emotional experiences. Thus providing examples of color problems artists should be careful not to mimic. Composition is when there are two or more colors combined to create harmony, and this is the goal of the theory of color. Johannes explains his meaning of the term color harmony as, “By color harmony I mean the craft o developing themes from systematic color relationship capable of serving as a basis for composition”.

Baroque RENASSIANCE VS BAROQUE Renaissance vs. Baroque was an art project where students had to learn the different styles of one another. For instance, Renaissance art forms were peaceful, well balanced with lines and shapes. Paintings created in a Renaissance art form had harmony, balance, stability and lines. While Baroque evoked dramatization in chaos, energy, pain, conflict and diagonal lines. Adding drama to Baroque paintings, and sculptures. A diagonal line is what makes a Baroque painting. Here are two examples of Renaissance and Baroque style compositions. Starting renaissance designed using a triangle as my centerpiece to create stability. While, baroque is created using diagonal lines leading the viewer across the chaos.

TIME BASED MEDIA

Motion Graphics is one of my favorite types of digital media. I am able to use physics, text and combination of elements to create an animation to convey a message. Usually when working in time-based media I go through a pre-production stage with the idea, then sketching out a storyboard. With more research I am able to have a great flow when production starts by taking notes, rearranging my element so they are able to flow properly. The applications I use are Adobe’ s After Effects, Cinema 4D, Illustrator, Photoshop and Adobe Premiere Pro. It varies on the type project I am working on determines what application I will be using to design but to make anything move my go to program is After Effects.

3D

MODELING I am still a student when it comes down to 3D modeling. I have been trying to teach myself new tricks when designing inside of Cinema4D and Maya. Usually when I start the pre-production stage of a short film, clip or animation. I start with a script, a sketch, thumbnails and a storyboard. I like to create my characters inside of Cinema4D because I am to see a variety of camera angles having the power to be the director of my own characters. My passion is motion design, so having a vast knowledge in 3D modeling is my current goal. I am currently working on my personal project Clowns.
