Entitled, ‘Beyond Delirious’ - reflections about the iconic, the social and the urban. It´s a reflection about the iconic in architecture, which aims to reveal the intelligentia that these landmarks give to spaces, as well as the delirium that goes with them, that is, the importance of iconography as an element which is capable of stimulating phenomena of sociability in the urban space. Spaces which allow integration of different lifestyles, different cultures and that prove to be leading elements of new urban expressions. Orientated by Prof. Doutor João Paulo Cardielos, it was defended in a public presentation, with argument by Prof. Doutor Jorge Figueira, presided by Prof. Doutor Rui Lobo, with a classification of 18 out of 20. http://issuu.com/rafaelanaia/ docs/beyond_delirious

MASTER THESIS

Fear of the new, fear of the difference, fear of what we don’t kwon and that we aren’t accustomed to master. Fear, seduction, fascination by silhouettes, floating objects of desire, which whom we have already become accustomed to live together. Objects so singular that become almost all the times a vanguard exploration. Sometimes, a new language, in others, a melting pot of ancient concepts but decontextualized, in favour of a new monument concept. Perhaps this, the contemporary icons don’t seem to aspire a replacement, as happened with the icons of antiquity that remains. But will the future of architecture be defined by the creation of more “exception buildings”? Certainly for who wanders and dwells every day in the earth of these stunt buildings, it has become almost insignificant, in contrast to the ecstasy of the starting bustle. But do we need them as much as they need us? The survival of the cult of iconographic object depends strictly on the existence of an observer | consumer, that searches the enchantment of a beautiful image, which has left classic standards. All that belongs to the pre-established canons is refused in favour of a new beauty. But the daily coexistence requires something more. Need more than an expression of power, the aesthetic experience of the silhouette, the visual challenges to gravity and stability, needs much more than the sight seduction, more than the image by the image. We talk about the social and cultural commitment of the architect, that when immersed in the star-system, he found himself constrained by political and economical forces, who want much more than a social strategy, aspiring it to be performing architectures, motivating events. Here resides the clash. Their success as catalysts, isn’t always guaranteed. However, when successful, they are able to demonstrate the strength of architecture as urban life engine, able to create outdoor spaces where various and different unplanned activities can mix themselves. If unsuccessful, they are destined to loneliness.

The growing need of cities to ask themselves about the action of these iconographies, that are references to the new society in construction of a new landscape, makes this subject relevant to the current discussion of the architecture for the city. A city that lives increasingly in urgency of the speed, the metamorphoses, the consumption and the fleeting, where the phenomenon fashionable, today, will certainly be different of tomorrow. What will remain? What perennial can we aspire to? In fact, it is a reflection about the iconic in architecture and the intelligentias that these landmarks lend to spaces, beyond all the delirium that will underlie them, in other words, the importance of iconography as an element capable of generating phenomena in urban space.

Truth is, it’s urgent that the production of significant buildings, that claim themselves as ex-libris spaces in the cities, which in general way host programs related with culture, go beyond the simple exercise of form by form, associating its intention to a social meaning. Therefore, it’s natural that some interventions seek to find osmosis between the city problems and of its inhabitants, with the creation of pleasure architecture, that use the image to respond to requests of this consumer society in a globalized era. Certainly a good architecture will know how to merge these two responses. What is to come, we cannot predict. Although we can be sure that we will continue to live together peacefully with the pleasure that the sublime of these architectures provide us.

The street will be assumed as a place of confluence of different interests and experiences, for a large diversity of audiences who can enjoy it, through different practices, that we call urban culture, using the architecture in order to be able to mediate this dialogue. Only then, will the icon take effect, promoting spatial structuring and referencing of an unnamed territory, in an attempt to return the urban relations that were interrupted by the growth of the city. By another words, that materialize integration spaces of different ways of life, from diverse cultures, able to provide a set of dynamics inside and around them, events planned or not, that transcend the usual programs, creating a link between them (building) and who enjoys it (people), claiming themselves as protagonists of new urban expressions and life. In this context, draw a landmark involves redesigning the urban mesh, re-qualifying degraded areas or peripheral in trying to define its limits, creating new promenades, public spaces, materializing a set of temporal, social, cultural, economic or politic dynamics that make the icon an element structuring the city language. Namely execute the architectural project as a way to think and criticize the city, providing the construction of new urban syntheses, able to involve new and different lifestyles.
