McCORMICK CAMPUS CENTER REM KOOLHAAS

M.2 RAFAEL BALLESTER JR.

The McCormick Tribune Campus Center was the 1st building designed by Rem Koolhaas within the USA.

Koolhaas won an International Architectural Design Competition Finalists : Peter Eisenman, Helmut Jahn, Zaha Hadid, Kazuyo Sejima

Awards • Pritzker Prize (2000) • Praemium Imperiale (2003) • Royal Gold Medal (2004) • Leone d’oro alla carriera (2010)

Studied at the Architectural Association (AA) School of Architecture in London + Cornell University (NY)

+ A 530 ft. section of public railroad tracks traverse above the university, which led Rem to design an enclosed stainless steel structure for the tracks in order to reduce noise within the university. + Koolhaas tracked movements of students across the old lot, which led to diagonal passageways as the center’s interior accesses

Single story building

= 110,000 sq/ft

+ Koolhaas uses a warm color palette with Yellow, Orange and Red. These colors proivde great contrast in the urban style of his construction, the building also has a lot of steel, exposed concrete and glass. He uses color as a way finding technic and to define spaces in his designs. Also light plays an important roll in this building and the use of color. A 93 ft. long computer trench is a space where student can go and work is painted bright red. The color makes you feel energized.

+ The master plan of the IIT campus, was designed by Mies Van De Rohe in 1941. + Rem then implemented a image of Mies on the northwest entrance of the building, along a 20 ft. long wall

+ The warm glowing hallways re-adjusts your eyes color perception. This is caused by a honeycomb glazing within the window pane which creates an interactive movement between the reflection of the sunlight and the location of the person. The pattern redirects and diffuses visible to reduce glare and increase comfort, while it simultinoulsy reflects solar heat which reduces energy consumption.

+ A long glass wall near the Welcome Center displays the portraits of several IIT founders. The design studio 2x4 contributed by creating this images composed of pictograms that depict various student activities and from afar, read asW pixels forming the portraits.

COLOR + ENVIRONMENT | FILM ANALYSIS • IND 5325 | RAFAEL BALLESTER JR | M.3 •

GENERAL MOVIE COLOR PALETTE + Pulp Fiction is a series of short stories that coincidentally come together through different plot twists and series of events. The film primarily consists of a couple robbing a restaurant, two hit-men trying to retrieve a briefcase for their boss, a boxer on the run after accidentally killing his opponent, and an affair with the boss’s wife.

+ Throughout the film, the director uses a variety of color schemes and lighting to influence the mood and reinforce the setting. The colors most commonly seen are red, orange, yellow, and black. These colors correlate with the reoccuring themes of drugs, death, and money as they mostly represent bad luck, danger, and turmoil througout the movie.

+ The pastel pink colored booths they are sitting in indicates anticipation/anxiety during this scene. + A conversation between the hitmen winds up with them deciding to rob the diner and everyone inside of it. + Even though the robbery occurs during the beginning of the movie, the result isn’t revealed until the end of the movie. + The color orange is contrasted by the color blue. Both guys are wearing a blue shirt which contrasts with the rest of the color scheme within the scene. + It draws our attention to them as they are trying to remain calm while everyonebaround them is freaking out

+ Martha is seen mostly wearing a white t-shirt next to white walls or on white textures. White represents purity + innocence which applies to her character. + During her shoots, scenes vary in lighting and color to change the mood from beginning to end. From innocently picking her up, taking her out on a few dates, to ultimately inducing her overdose on drugs. + Wallace’s house, is painted mostly white and has super bright, uncomfortable lighting. The color white represents purity and innocence, which ends up contradicting the personality of the men. The lighitng represents the intent to cover up the darkness/shadows to prevent losing Marthas innosence.

+ The yellow-hues are introduced again in this scene where the rapists are threatening Butch and Wallace. The color yellow mixed with the dark tones of the scene’s lighting give ominous feel as well as a sense of nervousness and caution. + The bright red features are a constant reminder of the excitment and courage portrayed in a scene. + The earthy color plate the basement has provokes a connection to another dimension, such as death or incarceration. This uncomfortable setting induces the anger and passion displayed throughout this scene. Caution and awareness is induced after the climax of the scene.

+ The director emphasizes the brown color schemes when Butch is present. This indicates the feeling of home and comfort ehich always seems to be a underlying factor that makes up his personality throughout the film. + Vincent arrives to the Wallace’s house, which happens to be all white and has harsh bright lighting. The color white represents purity and innocence, which is a total juxtaposition of Marcellus and Mia Wallace’s true characteristics. The black suit and windows represents sophistication and bad luck.

+ The director varies in lighting and color to change the mood from beginning to end of the entire outing. Here he re-introduces the yellow/orange + blue theme from the beginning of the film. This represents the return to the “previous norm. + The black and white suits are perfect for the scene since they bring that experiance, hierarchial, power sensation that describes what the men just endured.

+ In one of the last scenes, Wallace and Mike are seen back in casual clothes with the re-occuring theme of blue and orange. This time seen without any blood or suits, thus representing they are fully past that dangerous and tense phase. Their attitutdes and mood add that finishing touch on the story of this film.

+ Located on the ground floor of Herzog & De Meuron’s parking structure, the ALCHEMIST nicely fits in with the trendy and slick look of the garage. As the outside is a standard design for commercial purposes design by the architects, the interior offers a completely different experience.

CONTRAST OF COLOR + The use of white allows the products displayed to attract most of the attention. It allows emphasis on the clothing and colorful center seating. The isolation of colors and shapes provides a higher chance of locating the design elements emphasizing on the overall product.

COLOR EMPHASIS + The color of disruption is displayed on these edgy benches desgined by Zaha Hadid. This color is so strong in the eye, that it draws the attention of any civilian walking past, therefore drawing attention.

CONTRAST OF VALUE + The contrast of light v. dark conveys your eye to automatically followe the neon green and the wooden elemnts near the back. The darker colors within the store reside near the back, allowing the visitors to enjoy a full experience.

CONTRAST OF TEXTURE + On the back of the store, the wooden element structure plays a crucial role with the feeling created within the store. This material helps soften the abrupt neon color and neutralizes the environment. On the other hand, while it makes the clean, white space a bit more cozy, it also diffirentiates between the public + private spaces. The changing room is alocated of to the sides of the back “wooden room. This allows for a clear distinction between programs.

DETAILS

The Delano Hotel located in Miami Beach is primarily known for its quaint, Art Deco styled design explored through the use of lines, patterns, textures and geometric shape...

+ VARIETY is a principle of design that is concerned with the combination of one or more color elements that use line, shape, texture, and/or pattern to create diversity and contrast in an interior space....

Color & Lines This is most apparent feature within the columns, floor, walls and textiles. A contrast is established between the verticality seen in the columns and the horizontality seen on the wooden flooring. In addition, the verticality seen in the curtain also creates a contrast between the diagonal lines on the wall adjacent to it. Color & Pattern Pattern is established through the repetitve use of wall fixtures. The bright red lighting creates a contrast with the tinted red background. The polished floor also reflects a wood-like pattern and acts as a contrast to the rough textured walls.

Color & Texture The polished ground creates a contrast with the matte walls. The mohagony colors also contrast the orange tint on the sliding doors. Color & Shape Contrast between color and shape is seen through the use of geometric shapes. Square indents in the wall create a contrast between the diamond patterns seen on the wall. The indenture also creates a shadow which enhances the red lighting.

Color & Lines The use of natural greenery contrasted with cool colors seen in the horizontal staircase foreshadows a space that is expected to be calm, relaxing and restful. Color & Pattern The repetitive hexagonal pattern used as a background, adds variety to the indoor lounge by creating a space of interest and contrast. Color & Texture Naturally rough texture is seen through the use of greenery. It creates a visual stimulus of touch and emphasizes the glossy finishes used on the fixtures and furniture. Color & Shape The most apparent contrast between color shape is seen through the use of geometric shapes. Rectangular windows are placed on opposite sides of hexagonal fixtures which create a contrast between light and shadow.

DETAILS

ANALYSIS

Discussion + Analysis As you enter the space, you are greeted by a custom perforated screen wall, punctuated with the Adobe logo that defines the edge of the large Town Hall space, Hipster. This multifunctional room is designed to be the building’s hub. Creating a venue for all-hands meetings, art openings, guest speakers, hack-a-thons or just lunch with co-workers. The new finishes throughout the space typically provide an impulsive pop of color and texture against the buildings classic SOMA exposed brick and heavy timber structure. At the second and third floors, visitors are greeted off of the elevator by the folding charcoal entry that is weaving its way around the existing building structure. The Shapeupper floors take advantage of the buildings rather long and narrow floor plate by placing conference rooms that run along the building’s core that provide close proximity for the open office area. At the north end, the lounge provides a respite from the bustling work day by providing a great view of the San Francisco skyline. Collaboration is in Adobe’s DNA and each neighborhood features a ‘team relax’ space that takes advantage of the views and provide a casual meeting destination protected by a glazed enclosure. Environmental graphics and branding elements are strategically located throughout the floors, providing a brand

My Island

PUERTO RICO

My Culture. My Country. Puerto Rico

• Puerto Ricans often call the island Borinquen – a derivation of Borikén, its indigenous Taíno name, which means “Land of the Valiant Lord”. • The terms boricua and borincano derive from Borikén and Borinquen respectively, and are commonly used to identify someone of Puerto Rican heritage. The island is also popularly known in Spanish as la isla del encanto, meaning “the island of enchantment” • Columbus named the island San Juan Bautista, in honor of Saint John the Baptist, while the capital city was named Ciudad de Puerto Rico

Culture of Choice

VIETNAM

My Culture. My Country. VIETNAM

• Vietnam is the easternmost country on the Indochina Peninsula in Southeast Asia. With an estimated 92.7 million inhabitants as of 2016, it is the world’s 14th-most-populous country, and the ninth-most-populous Asian country. • Its capital city has been Hanoi since the reunification of North and South Vietnam in 1976, with Ho Chi Minh City as a historical city as well. • Vietnam was then unified under a communist government but remained impoverished and politically isolated. In 1986, the government initiated a series of economic + political reforms which began Vietnam’s path towards integration into the world economy.
