TA Residence With New York City as background, the intention behind this project was to set up an open apartment, bringing together social, dining and work areas, expanding the perception of the space and taking advantage of the singular views of the city while revealing its functionality. Designed for a young couple who had just moved into town, the project reflects their easygoing personalities, serving as an escape from the hustle of the city and providing an atmosphere that comfortably accommodates small gatherings, where the details and selection of materials were thought in order to express a pleasant simplicity. With a lean program and following the couple’s aesthetics orientation, a precise selection of contemporary furniture is complemented by a few exclusive pieces designed specifically for the project, such as the kitchen counter and the bedroom nightstand, where their exceptional collection of art, combined with a careful combination of textures, result in a cozy and comfortable residence.

Pendant Light Mixing materials that are not usually seen together, this pendant relates the coldness of the metal and the warmth of the Japanese paper, thus generating a comfortable light while maintaining a contemporary design. Composed of three independent parts coupled together, its nucleus is a custom LED printed circuit board which is fastened to the metal frame in which the paper-coated acrylic shade is attached by means of magnets, the piece is hung from a suspension cord that is tied to a metal canopy, where the LED driver is located. Following a minimal aesthetic, the light fixture is currently under production in collaboration with a couple of local fabricators, enhancing the dialogue between designers and makers from different disciplines and generations, evolving the community aspect of the design world in SĂŁo Paulo.

Monolith It all began while watching again Stanley Kubrick’s masterpiece, “2001: A Space Odyssey”, where an imposing structure provides a connection between the past and the future, a fearsome element that can pose a threat when intimately contemplated, but that in reality has been accompanying and influencing the evolution of man. This understanding made me associate the meaning of the Monolith unveiled in the eponymous novel by Arthur C. Clarke with my conception of the human relation to art, which is linked to the history of man and the world, and sometimes can be understood as something intimidating, but that in fact when experienced free from any judgment, it dialogues with our society, stimulating its progression. This reflection gave rise to this proposal for a permanent pavilion in Inhotim, an open-air gallery set amid botanical gardens in southeast Brazil, where, through a time and space apparently without goals or intentions, offers a moment dedicated to contemplation and self-knowledge. As a monolithic volume that appears to have fallen from the sky and now rests in the middle of the forest, the secluded solid block is composed of a sequence of timeworn iron sheets embraced by the landscape in its surroundings, where two openings indicates the ways inside. Thought of as a trajectory of self-perception to be followed, a narrowing tunnel gradually transitions the exterior into the interior, where the imposing proportion leads to reflective thinking and materiality forces presence and the perception of the space. The upper patio is a readjustment space, where contact with the outside world is resumed, in which a large modular skylight emerges from the ground, becoming a translucent plaza that at night is illuminated from the inside out. Access to the pavilion is through a thicket path that marks the beginning and end of this course that offers the opportunity to expand one’s own consciousness, being aware of the very essence, as Hermann Hesse wrote, “The true profession of man is to find his way to himself.”

Counter The first element to come across when inside the TA Residence, this counter was created with the intention of shortening the boundary between art and design, acting as a functional sculpture made up of a set of basic geometrical shapes. Following the aesthetic guidelines adopted for the project and serving as an extension of the kitchen countertop, and also acting as a dining sideboard or even accommodating small meals, the piece was created to gather various situations and assume several roles in order to favor the fluidity of space. Composed of three solid blocks of sandstone apparently arranged at random, the smaller base is retreated, clearing the entrance of any visual obstacle, while the larger one is on the opposite side, structuring the entire top, which rests delicately over them, conferring an unexpected lightness to a piece entirely made of stone.

Conceptual 2017 95m2 Amazonas River AM Brazil

Victoria-amazonica The Brazilian folkloric tales inspired this series of floating cultural centers forming an eco-friendly route along the Amazon river with the purpose of bringing back to life the country’s indigenous traditions and increasing conscious tourism in one of the most important natural destinations on the planet. With all profit to be invested in the preservation of the local communities, each pavilion is dedicated to a different tale and this one is based on the legend of the Giant Water Lily, which tells that on the banks of the Amazon River, the beautiful women of an Indian tribe gathered to stare at the beauty of the Moon, dreaming of becoming one, since they believed it would be so if they touched it. The young Naiá took the river trails hoping to fulfill her dream and found the Moon quietly reflected on the water’s surface, thinking that it had come to allow her touch, Naiá plunged into the river and disappeared, being transformed by the Moon into a giant flower that spreads over the water to receive the its full light. The largest water lily in the world, the victoria-regia is a native plant of the Amazon River basin with large round leaves and an upward-facing border that can withstand heavy weights and when it blooms has a slightly pink with red rims white petal. Incorporating the mystical quality of the legend and the physical aspect of the aquatic plant, my proposal hovers upon a structure in its shape, where an overlapping cover forms the silhouette of a waning crescent moon, protecting its interior. Reached only by boat and resting on a floating structure, the entrance to the pavilion forces a short leap over the water mirror, as Naia’s diving, that borders the inner perimeter of the anchored vessel. Intending to make it disappear amongst its surroundings, the chosen elements resembles the Indian natural habitat, bringing together locally sourced materials hand crafted by the native community within a contemporary aesthetic, thus connecting itself to the current social context, in order to shine a light in the country’s popular heritage.

Design 2016 111 x 70 x 49 cm Terrazzo

Side Table Located below a window at the height of the treetops, the design of this side table refers to the casual seating of the bleachers, where one can sit and lean against the wall, being created as a hybrid of table and bench, maintaining its support function while allows it to take part of the layout as a seating spot. With basic geometric shapes, the formal simplicity draws attention to its materiality, adding the tactile experience as an essential part of the design and giving a new meaning to a rather common material. Bringing the main corner of the living room back to everyday use, the mixed-use piece is composed of three independent modules built in terrazzo slabs and slightly loose from the ground, thus facilitating new arrangements according to the needs and giving the solid blocks a lightness feel, as if they were floating in space.

Residential 2016 150m2 São Paulo SP Brazil

DG Residence Sober and relaxed, the main task of this project for the remodelling of this urban apartment was to unravel its layout, tying together entrance hall and dining and living rooms, integrating all the space and increasing its fluidity. Created for a young couple who had just purchased their first residence, a casual design with no major structural interference was proposed following the lines of a comfortable minimalism, where the existing elements were worked in order to gain new textures, as the walls, that received a porous paint specially developed in collaboration with the construction team. The selection of furniture and art works was made exclusively of contemporary national designers and artists, valuing the current Brazilian scene, where I also designed some pieces specifically for this project, as the living room’s daybed and the dining room’s sideboard, that were already completed in this first phase, leaving for a second moment the production of other special pieces, as the living room’s rug and coffee and side tables.

Sideboard Cabinet, bar and sometimes a DJ table, this multipurpose piece designed for the DG Residence was created to meet the storage needs without compromising visual calm, creating the link for a smooth transition between living and dining rooms, where it also serves as support during dinner parties. Following the project’s informal concept, the wall mounted sideboard is composed of two opposing volumes, where the horizontal block up holds a vertical cupboard that rests, as if mistakenly positioned, on its top. Custom made to meet the specific needs of the owners, this piece was fabricated according to the highest standards by local partners in São Paulo and I was responsible for its development, from sketching and material research to the executive project and meetings with manufacturers to assess design solutions until final assemblage.

Scenography 2017 275m2 Vitória ES Brazil

Endgame Originally developed for my bachelor’s degree thesis, I return to the project for a scenography proposal for the play “Endgame” by Irish playwright Samuel Beckett, which depicts a context of calamity, where the characters are survivors adrift who succumb through a monotonous wait for the end of existence, this way conceiving a new study as means of reflection over the personal transformation that I have undergone since my graduation. Through an extensive research on the author and the historical context in which the work was written, I choose not to break with Beckett’s original ideas, following the guidelines of the set design’s brief description by the author in an effort to bring the work to a contemporary setting. This resulted in a scenography proposal for an alleged production of the play at the inauguration of Cais das Artes, a theater with project by Paulo Mendes da Rocha and Metro Arquitetos Associados, in the coastal city of Vitória, located in the Brazilian southeastern state of Espírito Santo, and opening scheduled for 2019. Unlike my previous proposal, I am even more radical about minimalism, forcing aesthetically the literary style that Beckett assumed, and instead of reinforcing the misery aura after World War II, the scenery acts as a neutral backdrop, breaking with the visual aspect inherent to the play and letting the human roughness set the tone of disgrace. Resembling a real place removed from our reality, the characters are taken away from a common spatial notion by the monumental scale of the space, where light tones attenuates the tactile quality of the materials, leaving the set with a neutral emotional load where gentle forms makes for a softer atmosphere, opposing the dissatisfaction portrayed. My attempt is to create a space of transition that relates existence and absence through the contrast between light and shadow, where the scenario becomes a sublime waiting room for the characters’ final redemption, where they can find inner peace and then move on to their next stages, since for them the end is imminent, but it can be a long wait.

“One day you’ll be blind, like me. You’ll be sitting there, a speck in the void, in the dark, for ever, like me. One day you’ll say to yourself, I’m tired, I’ll sit down, and you’ll go and sit down. Then you’ll say, I’m hungry, I’ll get up and get something to eat. But you won’t get up. You’ll say, I shouldn’t have sat down, but since I have I’ll sit on a little longer, then I’ll get up and get something to eat. But you won’t get up and you won’t get anything to eat. You’ll look at the wall a while, then you’ll say, I’ll close my eyes, perhaps have a little sleep, after that I’ll feel better, and you’ll close them. And when you open them again there’ll be no wall any more. Infinite emptiness will be all around you, all the resurrected dead of all the ages wouldn’t fill it, and there you’ll be like a little bit of grit in the middle of the steppe.”

Nightstand Emerging from a stone and felt coated headboard wall where its mounted on, this floating drawer was designed to clear space in the contained master bedroom of the TA Residence, where emptiness was needed in order to provide visual comfort to the compact room. Following the functional and minimal concept behind the contemporary residential project, the nightstand was created as an element of the bedroom’s structure, where it serves as support and storage area while consuming minimum space, thus allowing the materiality of the room to stand out. The simple aesthetic outcome is strengthened by the precise thin edge of aluminum coated in wood veneer, which frames the entire front of the indented drawer, where the handle is carved on, accentuating its functionality and conferring the piece a subtle and light appearance.

Residential 2014 1000m2 São Paulo SP Brazil

897 Residence A widely renovated duplex penthouse filled with design furniture selected from shops, design galleries and antique dealers around the world, the project has a chic essence without breaking away from the contemporary style, where darker hues convey the owners’ personality, a young couple with two daughters who likes to receive friends, thus having the apartment an active nightlife. Extremely exclusive, the luxury is in the project’s high personalization and I was responsible for the creation and development of all furniture designed in-house, also participating directly in concept generation and in the selection of all furniture, coating materials and fabrics, decorative lighting, styling pieces and decorative books, including travel to New York with the owners for the purchase of all these items, being responsible from quotations until delivery and control of budget and quality. Ultimately, I co-coordinated the styling and photo shoot and the project was published by Casa Vogue Brazil magazine, issue 351, in November 2014.

Design 2013 195 x 90 x 32 cm Granite

BP Coffee Table Conceived to be a remarkable piece and the focal point of the space, this coffee table created for the dark-hued living room of the 897 Residence follows the aesthetic guidelines imprinted on the project, where the selection of furniture composes a sophisticated setting. With the idea of having an element that would lighten up and anchor the room together, since the other furniture is loose from the ground, a light colored raw block of stone was sliced and shaped in order to give the table the desired visual weight in a way that would not sink the whole surrounding. Custom built in a Brazilian granite, this piece was fabricated according to the highest standards and I was responsible for its creation and development, from sketching, material research and coordinating the executive project to meetings with the executors to assess design solutions until final delivery.
