Jane Addams Park Fieldhouse Chicago, IL 2020

The new Chicago Park District’s Addams Merrill Recreation Center incorporates a new program for the City of Chicago. Located within Addams Park, the 100,000 square foot single-story facility includes an indoor artificial turf field to provide year-round soccer in the City as well as new exterior playing fields for soccer, football, lacrosse, and baseball.

A Great curtain wall entry with a brightly colored metal panel cantilever canopy defines the entrance and protects the visitors form the elements while providing visual connection to the outdoor playing fields. Great expanses of glass give a glimpse of the activities on the inside of the fieldhouse creating interest for the passersby as well as providing natural light.

The building program includes: a reception space, offices, an artificial soccer turf field, a 3-lane running track, ‘flex’ courts that combine into a full-size basketball court with potential for (4) practice courts, club room and pantry, restrooms, offices/reception, storage and mechanical spaces.

The building exterior consists of load-bearing insulated 12” thick and 12’-0” wide structural precast panels with an architectural exterior finish. This choice of materials helped to achieve a durable but cost effective envelope which facilitated fast construction.

South Loop Elementary School Chicago, IL 2019

Designed to fit on an urban site less than 2 acres in area, this new 1,200 student school is organized vertically in four-stories, in an “L-“ shape, to minimize the footprint, maximize natural light and to shield the ground-level playground from prevailing westerly winds. Public functions are located on the northern portion of the site organized around a grand staircase. Lobbies on each level help to maximize visual supervision by staff and provide efficient access to Dining, the Library, Gymnatorium, Art, Science, and Music classrooms, and a roof-level playground. Changes in color, material, form and fenestration were employed to visually foreshorten and balance the building’s mass in its downtown neighborhood. A pedestrian plaza and glazed lobby with steel canopy announce the primary entrance. White brick and volumetric relief were employed to promote way-finding to secondary building access points.

St. Clement Parish Chicago, IL 2017

St. Clement and the Archdiocese of Chicago reached out to develop a new barrier-free accessible entrance to their 100 year old church and parish center rectory buildings. The rectory buildings are located within the Arlington Deming Landmark District of Chicago, requiring sensitivity to the architectural features and neighborhood context. In support of both the neighborhood context and St. Clement’s mission of unity and inclusiveness, the architectural solution employed a ‘light touch’ approach that quietly unifies the disparate elements of the campus. A gentle transition to the new lower-level entrance was provided by carefully sculpting the elevated front yard and preserving all architectural features of the original structures. A modern vocabulary of simply expressed stained oak, weathered steel, and architectural concrete sparingly contrasts with the original limestone, terra cotta, and copper. A new twostory lobby, fully concealed from street view, is nestled behind the historic loggia and between the church and rectory buildings. The new lobby provides controlled access to a new four-level elevator, transition ramps and a stair that connect and unite various levels of the church and rectory buildings. A two-story glass wall provides views to the landscaped courtyard and invites soft, north light into the lobby and former basement spaces of the rectory building.

East End Condo Chicago, IL 2017

Featuring over 2,500 square feet of space with dramatic views of Lake Michigan, this project is located in one of Hyde Park’s most prestigious high-rise buildings. Built in 1928, this unit had undergone limited renovations over the past century. Legacy mouldings were restored and repurposed to grace the formal living spaces while the kitchen and private living areas transitioned seamlessly to a modern aesthetic: Subtle and confident. Classic and contemporary. The historical integrity of this space encouraged this project to become a restoration in lieu of a renovation. It became imperative to use the existing architectural details to facilitate the transformation. Instead of building replicas of the legacy moldings; the existing plaster concave crown pieces were restored, existing cornices were relocated and repurposed to be showcased in primary living areas, and a solid oak arched double door was revived. While this approach required significantly more effort, it substantially decreased the need to purchase and deliver new wood finishes which would have required custom fabrication for one-time use.

Engine 86

Chicago, IL 2017

Engine 86 is the sole remaining wooden firehouse in Chicago and is a city landmark. The original 1899 firehouse has been converted to a single family condominium residence with an open loft plan that is inspired by the original engine house. The plan maintains the spirit of this engine house by placing the gallery kitchen and spiral stair - which recalls the fireman’s pole - in the “residual” zone of the hose tower (added in 1930). Additional vertical circulation was placed on the cross axis of the floor plan. This stair leads to the second floor with sleeping spaces on either end and a central atrium with a large skylight. The exterior materials reflect the different construction stages of the original firehouse. The greatest challenge was to maintain the historic façade features and integrate them into a livable floor plan. These features enhance design decisions of this speculative real estate venture.Reuse and repurposing of an historic building is the ultimate act of sustainability. This coupled with an energy efficient envelope formed the basis of a sustainable design. ASSOCIATION OF LICENSED ARCHITECTS MERIT AWARD

Southeast Area Elementary School Chicago, IL 2016

This 1,200 student K-8 school was the first new school design utilizing new, more cost-effective CPS design standards. These standards were developed by CPS in 2013 with the objective to maintain educational program objectives, simplify constructability, expedite schedule and reduce construction cost. This school is located on a triangular-shaped site that abuts the elevated Chicago Skyway. To visually mitigate the large mass of the structure, and to add visual interest on the faรงade, a series of articulated planes were developed that collapse spatially along the Chicago Skyway. Inside the building color, scale, and lighting were employed to help attenuate the perceived length of the 250 foot corridor. The school is designed with 44 academic classrooms, 2 computer labs, 3 science classrooms, 3 art/science classrooms, 2 music rooms, kitchen and dining facilities, gymnasium, library, and administrative offices. Site improvements included new parking for 51 vehicles, an artificial turf play field, playgrounds, and site landscaping.

Coonley Elementary School Chicago, IL 2014

The Coonley Elementary School Addition and Select Renovations project was a three-story addition to the existing Coonley Elementary School. It was intended to address school over-crowding within the existing facility. This addition provided expanded program space with contiguous weather-protected connection to the existing building. The design of the new Addition and site improvements strives to provide spaces which can contribute to ensuring that every child is educated and prepared for success; the ultimate goal of CPS. In order to achieve this goal, the building and site design seeks to provide a noninstitutional child-centered learning environment that can foster integration and cooperation among students, encourage learning through an array of spaces and visual connections, allow for interactive play, and encourage independence of students. Importantly, the architecture should have an inherent and understandable order and offer visual cues and orientation aids for all students. The new addition and site was designed and constructed to achieve a LEED Silver rating for Schools 2009 as defined by the U.S. Green Building Council.

VW Autobarn

Countryside, IL 2012

This VW dealership was built on top of the foundations of an old Hyundai dealership using a new concept for brand image called “White Frame”. The concept guarantees a brand-appropriate presence in conjunction with a concept that focuses on customer processes and conforms to the new Volkswagen standard. In many different ways, it paves the way for meeting all the needs of customers and dealers worldwide. The white frame provides the visual framework for the brand identity. With its clear, simple shape, it is key to Volkswagen’s visual identity and is used in all the principal elements of the dealership. The frame unmistakably accentuates elements such as the facade and portal, ensuring clear differentiation from the competition. Inside, the white frame is used for the presentation of vehicles and products and is reflected in the furniture system. Moreover, there is a visual overlap between the spatial impression at the dealership and Volkswagen’s print media (such as e.g. advertisements and brochures). This creates high brand recognition across all media platforms. Thanks to the extensive use of white by the new concept; both indoors and outdoors, an elegant, calm effect is achieved and the brand acquires a strong sense of identity. Volvo Of Oak Park Oak Park, IL 2012

The Volvo of Oak Park expansion includes an addition to the existing showroom, the renovation of the service write-up area, site regrading and a substantial addition to the existing service area. This project was especially challenging because construction was expected to occur without disrupting business. The client insisted it was necessary to cause the least amount of trouble possible to customers. To respond to these concerns, the project was designed in phases. First, the addition to the showroom was built, which also included: some site regrading, a new access to the service area and the renovation of the service write-up. Once the first phase was completed and the new showroom opened to the public, the second phase began: the expansion of the service area and extensive site regrading. Never during the construction process was there a need to shut down the business in its entirety. Volvo of Oak Park now boasts a modernized showroom that complies with the new Volvo branding and the desires of the client. The dealership also offers 11 new service lifts which will allow it to handle the expected volume of clients for years to come. Entrance Statement

Lakeview Digestive Disease and Liver Center Chicago, IL 2012

The Lakeview medical center consists of covered parking and a lobby on the first floor, a gastroenterology clinic on the second floor, and two medical suites on the third floor. Challenges in this project’s design were: to provide enough parking without creating a basement, to isolate the noisy oxygen equipment from quieter exam rooms, to provide suction and oxygen in procedure rooms, to remediate poor soil strength conditions, budgetary constraints and time. The entire process - from initial design through construction - took place in just over one year. The building consists of a stained precast concrete structure with interior steel and bar joist floor and roof structure. Synergies Studios is a design-build firm, therefore we provided all of the services related to design work (with the exception of electrical engineering), in addition to structural calculations, budgeting and construction permitting

Remington Fire Station Remington, IN 2010

Located in Remington, Indiana a volunteer fire station serves the rural town of Remington and most importantly the adjacent freeway interstate 65. The design of the station incorporates environmentally friendly sustainable strategies of passive solar heating and a solar hot water heater, geothermal heating, radiant floors and wind actuated ventilation. The inception of this fire station came with the need to accommodate new ladder truck equipment. Several industries that moved to Remington recently have necessitated the need for the fire service department to accommodate fire latter trucks. This facility carefully addresses the present needs and future expansion of a fire station for the growing town of Remington.

Parametric Chair Chicago, IL 2007

Parametric chair design as a mode of digital fabrication. Wishing for it to be ergonomic, the chair is inspired by the human form. The shape is derived from measurements of a human back. These points are then replicated digitally in the model as adjustable splines which form the surface of the chair. The chair can easily be customized and fabricated according to the needs of an individual person.
