ENGAGE • CONNECT • LOCAL Rutland Area Farm and Food Link (RAFFL) builds connections that grow a strong agricultural economy and healthy community.
1
Through the development of new markets and the strengthening of existing markets, RAFFL works to increase consumer demand and access to local food. Our annual Locally Grown Guide list hundreds of farms and local food businesses, and is widely distributed across the Southern Vermont region. In a comprehensive phone survey conducted at the Castleton Polling Institute, 39% of the general population has used the Locally Grown Guide, positively impacting their local food behavior. Farm Fresh Connect, RAFFL’s state-of-theart online local food market, gives farmers and food producers access to new customers and offers the convenience of online ordering and local delivery to dozens of sites.
RAFFL Increases Access to Local Food
4
Local Food is the Future of Food
By building connections that grow a strong network of our region’s agriculture, RAFFL’s work supports local farmers, strengthens communities, enhances the regional economy, protects our working landscape, and safeguards our family’s health – today and in the future, ensuring present and future generations will have access to nourishing, flavorful and abundant local food.
2
RAFFL Strengthens Local Economy
Through our innovative Glean Team, RAFFL provides farm fresh food to a vast network of community support programs. Glean Team staff and community volunteers collect local food from area farms and farmers' markets and provide this food, free of charge, to families and community members in need. To date, RAFFL has collected and distributed over 65 tons of fresh, local food and engaged over 700 volunteers who have donated more than 2,500 hours.
5
RAFFL Supports New and Developing Farmers
By providing support, education and technical assistance to new and developing farmers, RAFFL works to ensure a steady crop of economically viable farmers in our region – now and in the future. RAFFL offers new farmers opportunities to gain skills and knowledge in all aspects of farm and business development and helps increase farm viability by creating new markets and increased demand for local food.
RAFFL Engages the Community
RAFFL builds strong community engagement and commitment to local food and farms. Through our Everyday Chef cooking, food, and nutrition program, community members gain skills and confidence to cook with whole foods. Farm tours offer opportunities to visit working farms and gain appreciation for the origin of local food. Harvest Watch, a weekly column in the Rutland Herald, provides up-to-date information on a diversity of farm and food topics.
WHO USES THE GUIDE?
RAFFL PROGRAMS
• 39% of respondents in a 2015 survey said they use the Locally Grown Guide to make local purchases. • In 2016 the guide will be found in over 600 locations in our region.

We are so fortunate in Vermont to have a wide variety of local foods available from the farms in our region. We all know—for example—we can find locally grown apples, kale, tomatoes, and blueberries. However, there are many vegetables, fruits, and grains grown in Vermont that may be less widely known. Here are of some that you might be surprised are available from local farms. Look for these products at area farmers’ markets, farm stands, and retailers of local foods.
