“No great artist ever sees things as they really are. If he did, he would cease to be an artist.” - Oscar Wilde Here we are again at the end of yet another year. It is time once again for another cohort of students to graduate and begin the greatest adventure of them all – their careers. With this passage of rites in a way, they are now ready for the next stage of their lives; they are now on the Edge of something new and exciting. Tonight is the chance for this graduating cohort to finally reveal new directions, to generate new ideas, to cause sensations, to honour imagination and create something that is unparalleled. These young individuals, over the course of the last six months, have been working endlessly on their final projects which will be presented this evening; what infinite possibilities, resources and ideas shall we witness? They seem endless at this moment; they are already envisioning the next journey on a new road that has started at Raffles College of Higher Education and will continue towards a bright new future. As Principal of Raffles College of Higher Education, I am especially privileged to present “Edge”, our graduation exhibition and fashion showcase. This evening is to honour these graduating students who dared to dream, who took risks in developing innovative concepts and ideas and realising them into amazing pieces of works. On behalf of the staff of Raffles College of Higher Education, we congratulate and wish them success in their future endeavours.

N O I IGN H S ES A F D “I never conformed to any sort of fashion ideal. My idea was always to show reality, even though I started at Savile Row and ended up at Givenchy in Paris; to depict the times I live in. - Alexander McQueen There is something strange and new, shatteringly real that is happening in the world of fashion before our very eyes. There have always been those of us that are constantly determined to push the boundaries of innovation and creativity, though it may at times be so eccentric and bizarre and always thought-provoking. They are the ones who will continue to build upon the legacy and vision that constantly tries to redefine the way we look at fashion today, and for the future, the graduating cohort of the Fashion Design and the Fashion Marketing Department.

Cynthia Fransisca Haryono Beyond the Veil Death is an inevitable part of life. “Deep into the darkness peering, long I stood there wondering, fearing, doubting, dreaming dreams no mortal ever dared to dream before. - Edgar Allan Poe

Yu Jiabin Gladiators The inspiration for this men’s wear collection comes from the ancient Roman games that once were played in the Coliseum by men who fought for their lives in order to entertain the crowds. Although Gladiators do not exist today in the same way, their spirit lingers on in all of us in a way. This collection pays homage to that very spirit.

Caroline Indriana Purnomo Iron Lady “Power is like being a lady. If you have to tell people you are, you aren’t.” - Margaret Thatcher A tough, brave, and fearless woman, Margaret Thatcher inspired me to create this collection. Her commanding force of character encouraged me to design a strong, powerful and yet feminine collection. Being a woman does not mean we should stop to dream, we can achieve whatever we want to, even things that seem impossible.

Fenny Wong Exotic Explorer The Exotic Explorer collects handicraft heritage from age-old cultures, and turns it into precious yet modern fashion. They travel through foreign lands to discover. They are the embodiment of differences, made into one.

Wucheng Kejia Schrei in rot und schwarz I took inspiration from German Expressionism. As a shortlived but widely-influenced art movement, there were many great works that appeared in history in different art fields. From film to painting, architecture to dance, and all the expressionists expressed their feelings, emotions, and psychology of postwar trauma by showing strong colours and visual effect, distorted shapes and spaces with an ominous, supernatural atmosphere.

Nguyen Thi Nhu Y, Lin Strangers They look strange. They are strangers. With strange shapes that help them avoid danger. They look very strange. They are strangers. And ultimately they make a difference.

Putri Arif Febrila FĂŠminitĂŠ Confident, empowered and ambitious, Sculptured by their inner strength and tenacity, Wrapped in allure and opulence, What is your definition of feminine?

Wong Dwi Adhitya Nugroho Dorian Gray Behind the pretty curtain, Thy acts ruin the heart. Nothing there to gain, but only scaring the piece of art Inserted the sorrowful pain and creating misery parts.

Zhang Mingxuan, Miako Female and the Military The First World War brought many changes to the western world. Among the most significant change was the prominent role played by women during this difficult time. Women became one of the most important factors that helped change the course of life as most of the men were on the frontline fighting the battles. They did many jobs that men had once done. Clothing at this point had become utilitarian and threadbare of any frills and decorations.

Le Vu Kim Long, Lucas Love, Sex and Betrayal Love is the target of many people, sex is the physical, born-desire, while betrayal is the undesirable factor. These things may be independent and not connected but they seem to happen simultaneously in each relationship. Sex can help to upgrade love to a new level and bring the infidelity and separation to couples. Depending on the affection and the awareness of each person, these three elements could break up the relationship or make it more stable as in some moment; they know who they love by comparing the love and the betrayal.

Yohana Setiawan ‘Immature’ Those who are trapped in between - not a boy not yet a man, not a girl not yet a woman. ‘Immature’ describes the difficult transition from childhood to adulthood. How humans can never let go of their inner child, troubling the future when it became dominant.

Sun Xin Utilitarian Mode Utilitarian fashion has an innate ability to combine different fashion elements. This is same as Instagram which works in one specified dimension but motivates more creations that are chic and comfy.

Yovani Turner Travel in Fashion A collection inspired by a journey back to the Colonial Era, a Safari through the past and the wild nature that it was. In this past, we now see the future, so we travel abroad to be forever inspired.

Duong Thu Trang, Katie Speed Girl The idea of this collection comes from the motorcycles races. I want my girls to become strong and glamorous in this ultra modern style. By using the colour black only in various textures and textiles for all collection and combining it with gold and silver metallic detail, it will become more mysterious and dynamic.

Chiang Shiao Lui, Joy Paradise Lost Materialism is an ideology that coarsens and petrifies everything, making everything vulgar, and everything truth false. - Henri-Frederic Ameil This collection is inspired by the 17th century epic poem, “Paradise Lost by John Milton”. It stated the beginning of darkness, where Lucifer became the king of the world and still has a reign over it. Where there is opulence, there is always a coming of decadence. Since the beginning of human history, it’s always been pride that leads to one’s fall, whether it is an individual, or a great empire, or an economic system, society, or country. The concept behind the designs is to capture the indulgence in worldly opulence in relation to the decadence of humanity.

Qian Qiu Ping Belle De Jour The collection is inspired from the film “Belle De Jour, which dramatises the collision between depravity and elegance. The whole looks are going to tell a story about the surreal and realistic world of a woman with double personality. There are dramatic transformations between physical and mental life.

Gong Jiaqi Optical Illusion This collection is inspired by four famous optical illusions in science and art history, respectively Ehrenstein illusion, ZĂśllner illusion, Shigeo Fukuda Legs Illusion and CafĂŠ wall illusion, trying to create visually psychedelic clothes by practising fabric mix and match.

Jiang Song Yuan Socialite with Art Deco The inspiration of the collection is from Art Deco, a period that was more than just an art movement; it was a lifestyle, music, art and culture. It was a time when the socialites were the trendsetters and fashion was the centre of it all.

Cindy Caroline Legacy of Simplicity Body conscious and yet structured are the best words to define the collection. Inspired by the simplicity of architecture as it applies to today’s lifestyle, I seek to create a balance that bridges the environment we live in and the seamless way we dress.

Desy Christina First Dance, But Not the Last Ballet Russes had hugely influenced the 20th and 21st century on the dance, music and design. They have the richest resources to be experimented with. They will continue to influence the world, as if they still exist today.

Li Ting Yi, ISM Western Kabuki It is universally acknowledged that art has no boundaries absolutely. What was once an art form of the east was easily adopted and appreciated by the west. In this collection I chose the Japanese Kabuki, the roaring 20s and many elements of western Pop Culture, which I combined to create something that is a hybrid of sorts. There is a sense of feeling of eastern mysteries as seen through the eyes of a western culture with modern sensation to create something new and fresh.

Liu Yi Yang, Rita The dream of Alice When Alice began her many adventures in wonderland, at first, like many others, we believe this is a sort of daydream fantasy. As we begin to understand Alice’s journey we realise that she is a girl who is growing up and transforming to become a woman. With every step that she takes and every character that she meets, she changes. We soon see that this dream is like those of many young girls who change from a child to an adolescent right before our eyes.

To Phan Dieu Linh The Tribal Modernist We are the beginners for every country. We keep true beauty. We are the living art. We are rustic. We are state-of-the-art. We are alive. We are MODERN TRIBES.

Michelle Angeline Putri Body Transformation and Modification All people have done transformation to achieve the ideals of body perfection. I’ve always been fascinated with the human bodies’ abilities to be transformed and modified, as a form of art, as canvas, as experiment, and as an object, and how it can go beyond the limit, to express the body in extreme forms of experience.

Nadia Vania Hermi Back to the Future The idea about retro-futurism brings the original concept about the depiction of future from the past in the 60s and 70s era. It leads human minds to go beyond in envisioning the magnificent future that society wants. This vision of future has always been fascinating to be explored, since there would always be limitless and endless possibilities to shift our discomfort of the present.

Guo Yu, Taro Who is the Most Beautiful One of All? The sky, filled with sanguinary air, is heavily shrouded by clouds. Even the light seems to be dimmed by hovering dusts. This is my realm and my evil queen. Before the dawn of a new life breaks, destiny bids farewell to all souls and makes its offering of blood to all living beings. Darkness stretches endlessly and lingers around you.

Wenny Dewanti Wongso The Ugly Truth The issue of ideal beauty has always surrounded us and it becomes a subjective matter in modern society. Most people can get the perfection through the development of technology. However being unique is the main concept of fashion today. I want to encourage people to appreciate the beauty of imperfection because there is nothing more rare or beautiful than a person being comfortable in his or her perfect imperfection; it is the true essence of beauty.

Nguyen Hoang Xuan Thi Abstract Expressionism No Jackson Pollock, no Mark Rothko, I want to express fashion in the new aspect of Abstract Expressionism: Sculpture forms.

Ye Nan, Aviva Unpredictable Perspective This collection is inspired by two photography works which use the new visual angle to look at the modern city and one visual art that uses light to express perspective. I was always fascinated by the idea of the relationship between perspective and the way that we abstract the space surrounding it.

Zhou Xiao Chen Blossom AndalucĂa is known as the cradle of flamenco dance and music. Over the centuries with its long history of art and music in the south of Spain, it has completely transformed the way we look at dance. ThisFlamenco is more often associated with the Romani people of Spain known as the Gitanos or modern day gypsies and the dance crystallised amongst them in the 18th century into what we know today. Flamenco exploded on the dance floor like a flower blossom.

Sun Si Meng, Mavis Metamorphosis I have always been fascinated by the Greek Mythology. The idea that Gods can mate with humans and create children and at times become monsters that are part human and part animal has been a great source of inspiration. I mixed and combined several elements and materials such as silk, cotton, knit, leather, fur and metal elements to express my vision of these mysterious monsters.

Jin Lu Appearance and Inner Beauty This collection is inspired by a Japanese animated movie “Howl’s Moving Castle”. There is an underlying theme throughout the movie about the discovery of the inner soul and its beauty. One should not judge by the exterior appearance but rather the inner self.

Martha Yuliana Lie Manipulating Surfaces “Surrealism is destructive, but it destroys only what it considers to be shackles limiting our vision.” - Salvador Dalí

Emmy Ng The Harder They Fall Inspired primarily by Edgar Allan Poe’s Masque of the Red Death, this collection reflects how worldly wealth and power are no defences against the ravages of age and disease. In the face of death, the rich and mighty may, perhaps, have even more to lose. My use of muted colours in silks and jacquards harken to an age of fading aristocratic opulence - a dreary reminder that the taller we stand, the harder we may fall.

Le Cao Thien Ly, Rose Origami The traditional Japanese art of paper folding, which started in the 17th century and was popularised outside of Japan in the mid-1900s, inspired this collection. My design uses this form of paper folding in fabrics. This method makes clothes look stronger, and the women who wear them look modern and powerful.

Zhao Junsen, Jason Undiscovered Beauty My collection was inspired by Insects. I was very fascinated by their torsos or exoskeleton bodies, the shape and colour as well as the multiple layers that formed the wings. The silhouettes of different insects were used to create the style lines and seam lines with a composition of layered fabrics to create the entire look.

Law Wan Wei, Raina Vasilisa the Beautiful I always see you wither away when autumn arrives. Your eyes tell me I have found something that never dies. I long for the day to see your vibrant red petals and sharp thorns to prick my finger. You are the ever so passionate beauty. The girl in Russia, Vasilisa the Beautiful. Far away, long ago, once upon a December.

Cindy Widjaja Beauty by the Beach My mini collection is inspired by the fifties pin-up girls and the iconic beauty during that time, Brigitte Bardot. Through the use of pastel colors and floral prints I wanted to bring out the sense of freedom, femininity and everlasting beauty in fashion.

Claudia Gozali Red Riding Hood My inspiration comes from the children’s story of Red Riding Hood. Keeping in line with the Grimms’ Brothers’ version, I twisted the ending of the story to make the grandmother the Big Bad Wolf.

Pa Pa Phyo Oriental Culture Chinese Opera “The art of theater is one of the most important art forms, mostly because it serves from the royal family to public. - Jui-Chen Hu My theme for the collection is inspired by oriental culture and Chinese opera. The details, colours and designs of imperial dragon robes and the rich history of the Forbidden City were the basis of my research.

Khine Yee Kyaw Naing, Nora Secrets of the Tomb My inspiration comes from the ancient Egyptian art of mummification. Mummification is the preservation of a body, either animal or human that has undergone a process to stop the decay that comes with death. We can see through the many tombs of the Egyptians how this was part of their very existence. I used black and gold stripes to wrap and create bandages around the garments.

Kao Pei Yu Funky Funeral The idea of this collection comes from a song called “Dumb Ways to Die. This song is a campaign by Metro Trains in Australia. It made me think that death is not scary; it can be funny because in the end, everyone will die. So, think positive and face the ugly truth. Death is not as terrible as people think. If this is the last time to say good-bye to someone that you love, instead of being sad, why not make this last event happy?

Heng Shi Min Merlyn The Daylight Dreamers It is about going down memory lane, reliving moments from the past. Reminiscing the time you got your very first box of crayons and went crazy with it, taking walls as your coloring canvas. The thought of how you took a white sheet your mom gave you, tied it as a cape and pretended to be a superhero, running and flying about, still tickles you. The collection represents the innocence, curiosity and wild imagination a kid bears, things that we have forgotten growing up.

Zhao Xueni INK My inspiration comes from silence. Grey is protection, sophistication, freedom, strength and attentiveness to simplicity.

Lo and behold! Your art, my style An unimaginable concoction of art and fashion fusing the East and the West ignited at the solo exhibition by Spanish artist Lita Cabellut, where Raffles Singapore Principal Giuseppe (Joe) Spinelli also had a hand in. It was a first-of-its-kind collaboration in which Joe designed eight fashion pieces using fabrics hand painted by Lita. The finished outfits were showcased alongside Lita’s Dried Tear exhibition in Opera Gallery at Ion Orchard from 18 October to 3 November 2013. Raffles Singapore also roped in its students to design the window display for the launch event on 17 October 2013. Prior to the launch, both Lita and Joe have never met each other. “We were working in two different parts of the world. When I first saw the fabric designs that Lita drew, I spent some time thinking what I should do, because what I had in mind previously didn’t work after I saw the actual fabrics,” Joe recalled. “This is one of the most interesting projects I have ever worked on in so many years.”

Fashion pieces designed by Raffles Singapore Principal Giuseppe (Joe) Spinelli with fabrics painted by Lita Cabellut.

Neither has Lita seen the garments until she arrived in Singapore for her solo exhibition. Her paintings drew influence from the famed Japanese Geishas.

“It was a marvellous collaboration! And a challenging one as it was my first time starting something and letting my partner (referring to Joe) complete the rest of it,” shared Lita. The alliance showcased the principal’s ingenuity and superior craftsmanship and was certainly a wonderful experience for Raffles Singapore. Most importantly, it was a great platform to showcase Raffles’ proficiency in design and creativity that has seen the college nurture so many home-grown fashion designers in Singapore over the last 23 years. For Raffles students, Joe’s creations were a great deal inspiring as they witnessed for themselves the superior ingenuity and craftsmanship from the master Raffles Designer himself. Impressed with what Joe had created using her art, Lita said, “We admire each other’s work so much that we are already exploring new collaborative opportunities!”

Student-produced fashion show with an Indian flavour

Raffles alumnus Siddharth Shashankan (fifth from left) and the models wearing his collection.

Their efforts have paid off. Fashion Marketing students from Raffles Singapore savoured success with “India Within: A Fashion Mantra”, a charity runway show produced entirely by them. Not only did they receive overwhelming praises from the audience, they were also noticed by TV viewers with the exclusive broadcast of the fashion show on Vasantham, an Indian language channel dedicated to the vast Indian community in Singapore. Adding more ‘Raffles’ flavour to the fashion show was the presentation of the beautiful collection by Raffles graduate Siddharth Shashankan. The alumnus is another Raffles success story. Graduated in 2007, Siddharth is now a successful fashion designer with his own label, Hangar. “I am really happy to be invited to play my part as a Raffles alumnus for the charity fashion show produced by Raffles Singapore. The inspiration for my collection came mainly from comics and super heroes. There are a lot of bright colours being used in this collection,” shared Siddharth. A number of entertaining performances were planned to accompany the Indian theme. Bhangra performers wowed with their upbeat moves and stunts. A snake charmer intrigued the crowd with his skill to control the imposing scaly creature. Unsurprisingly, the snake became instantaneously popular with many people waiting to take a picture with it. A lucky draw was also held in which a number of lucky people walked away with attractive prices. To top it all off, goodie bags sponsored by Victoria Secret, New look, Lomography, Pedro, Radpopsicles, Glaciers accessories, Glamareus, Yoga Sandals Singapore and Nylon magazine were given to the audience in appreciation of their support for the fashion show. Towards the end, Raffles students who organised the spectacular show received thunderous applause for their efforts. Raffles graduate Siddharth also earned many commendations for his outstanding fashion collection. A fashion show like this provides students with the opportunity to showcase their talents before embarking on the next stage of their career development.

Out in the market: Award-winning mooncake boxes designed by Raffles Singapore students

Joanne Lee May Teng’s design was adopted by Peach Garden.

Baker’s Oven used Sherlivia Kurniawan’s design for its mooncakes.

The winning mooncake box designs by two students from Raffles Singapore at last year’s “Design a Mooncake Box” competition have been commercialised for this year’s Mid-Autumn Festival. Graphic Design students Joanne Lee May Teng and Sherlivia Kurniawan won the First Prize and Third Prize respectively at the competition organised by Design Packaging Concept Pte Ltd. Peach Garden, a popular local restaurant chain, adopted Joanne’s design, which was inspired by a traditional Chinese wooden door. Opening the box gives one the feeling of walking through a door that leads to a joyous celebration of the Mid-Autumn Festival. Beneath the traditional idea that sparked off the design concept, trendy and cool festive colours of hot pink and turquoise are used to accompany the modern illustrations on the box. To top it all off, the box is light, eco-friendly and inexpensive to produce. Sherlivia’s design concept of a Chinese lantern resonated with Baker’s Oven. The box could hold four mooncakes. Interestingly, the four slots can be removed to become either a working lantern or a container to store trinkets. The design is not only attractive but also versatile in its use. This year, Raffles Singapore was invited again to participate in the competition with 22 designs. Through online voting on Facebook, four Graphic Design students - Lau Yi Jun, Clarissa Sulaeman, Kelly and Riyan Adiputra Limindra – emerged as the Grand Finalists. They would be pitting against participants from other design schools in Singapore for the grand awards. Next year’s Mid-Autumn Festival may see mooncake packaging by Raffles Singapore students again!

Raffles Singapore and Heinz team up to create paintings beyond one’s imagination Raffles Singapore embarked on an exclusive collaboration with Heinz to create paintings using a unique ink ketchup. After a pre-selection process, the “Heinz Ketchup Art Challenge” rounded up four teams of Visual Communication students from Raffles Singapore to express their creativity through drawings using Heinz ketchup. Held at Raffles Singapore on 2 August 2013, the four teams got down to work on their paintings while other Raffles students and staff also joined in to make their own masterpiece on canvas using, of course, ketchup. To hype up the atmosphere, a music performance and a ketchup muffin baking demonstration were also organised. The artworks of the competing teams were uploaded on Heinz Singapore’s facebook to call for votes until 9 August. The winning team with the most number of votes would receive cash amount equivalent to the number of votes collected, up to a maximum of $1000. The painting titled “Grown Not Made” by sisters Carolyn and Stefany won the competition with 311 votes.

The “Heinz Ketchup Art Challenge” held at Raffles Education Square, Singapore.

“We based our artwork on the history of Heinz. Through our research, we found that Heinz has a very long history. Hence, we decided to work on the growth concept of Heinz. It has been a great experience,” shared Carolyn, who majors in Graphic Design. Raven Khaw from another team, who also majors in Graphic Design, said, “I have never tried painting with ketchup. I felt a strong sense of achievement when I completed the painting with my team member. I am happy and satisfied.”
