Graduation Exhibition & Fashion Showcase

18 JUNE 2012

APTITUDE “Everyone has talent, a natural gift since birth. We learn, we think, we elaborate. However, talent is nothing but potential. Our work changes this raw talent into a potential that is far greater than our natural gift. This is what we have achieved so far; it is the assembling of all the talents to form sublimity, transformed into our aptitude.”

PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE “To come out of isolation without renouncing your identity, you must confront it bravely and turn it upside down”. -Francesco Bonami As Principal of Raffles College of Higher Education I am especially privileged to present “Aptitude” our graduating cohort and their achievements. There is nothing more wonderful then opening up an empty notebook, with its fine white pages at the beginning of a new school year. Then before you realize it, this new notebook is dog eared and torn from its days of being carried around and used. It often contains many fantastic concepts and overwhelming visions and ideas that were written or sketched down in a hurry, to be considered in time. More often than not they were simply forgotten and abandoned. With the passage of time comes the annual graduation, and as the students clear up their spaces that they have occupied for many years, they chance upon that particular notebook. Flipping its pages, they see evocative images and illusions, ideas that now seem to re-invent themselves, as now a new Aptitude exists in them. The ideas now seem to open new avenues of thoughts within each student, and in this state of transformation what once seem impossible is now possible. Each student in turn begins to finally realize that today is the first day that their dreams become reality. What was once elusive has now become reality. As this new certainty settles into the mind of each graduate tonight, it is again that familiar ritual that occurs every year, where the graduating cohort leaves Raffles College of Higher Education to begin to live the life and career that our dedicated staffs has prepared them over their many years of study. We look forward to our graduating students in keeping the tradition and passion alive. On behalf of the staff of Raffles College of Higher Education, we wish them much success in their future endeavours.

I have met many interesting people along the way, which influenced me in so many different aspects. Raffles is a unique institution, which helped me to develop my skills even further and bring my design to a next level. Raffles gave me the opportunity to work on projects connected directly to the industry. This offered me an inside, away from the average student projects. I have learned to overcome many challenges and to go my own way.

The master’s is an intense programme that really puts you through your paces and exposes you to a wider design horizon. SHREYAA KRRITIKA DAS shreyaa@raffles-designer.com (65) 9810 5011 Raffles Design Institute has positively shaped and affected me more than any other educational experience to date. The professors are a thoroughly professional and dedicated group of people and have opened my eyes to all the tasks of a designer. They have enriched me with the confidence and knowledge to pursue my career in Graphic Design in the future. The Master’s course may only be a year, but my experience has been richer and more enjoyable than I ever could have imagined. It is a privilege to be associated with this school.

KULNAREE BOONTHONG kulnareeboonthong@raffles-designer.com (65) 8206 1140 “Design is easy. All you do is stare at the screen until drops of blood form on your forehead.” - Marty Neumeier After four years in Raffles I am proud to have finally obtained my Master of Design. Raffles has given me the opportunity to challenge myself, pushing me out of my comfort zone and helping me reach my fullest potential in design. My journey has been challenging but when I look back at what I’ve done, it makes me smile; all my effort has been worth it. It is now the time for a beginning, to venture into the industry world.

ALYSSA VALENTON alyssaamanda@raffles-designer.com (65) 9774 0311 There is no design without discipline. There is no discipline without intelligence. - Massimo Vignelli Design has been my only passion in life which is why I decided to take a step further by obtaining my master’s in Raffles. My one year journey in Raffles has been one of the most stimulating and exciting experiences in my life. Sleepless nights, headaches and frustrations helped me grow and discover a different yet better side of myself as a designer. Every report, every project challenged me to think of better ideas. As my lecturer would always say, “Go deeper”. Raffles taught me to never settle for merely good ideas; they should always be great ideas. They should be masterpieces.

Postgraduate Studies

MASTER OF DESIGN MAJORING IN DIGITAL MEDIA

HARSHAL DESAI desaiharshal@raffles-designer.com (65) 9168 8949 The Master’s Program has been an enlightening experience as it showed us the functional aspects of design. As Steve Jobs once said, “Design is not just what it looks like and feels like. Design is how it works.” What I like most about studying at Raffles is that they they provide you with a platform for experimenting and tinkering around with your skills, to hone them and eventually discover your true passion and identity as a Designer. If ever there was a prerequisite for a future successful creative individual, it would be this road of discovery. Within the past four years in academia, I have won awards, had my works published in reputed books and my designs circulated around the globe. Now I ask myself, what next, and look eagerly towards the corporate world. This is only the beginning... “Stay Hungry, Stay Foolish.”

Over two thousand years ago, an activity called ‘hazing’ was introduced and has been recorded as a part of history. In the United States alone, this so called activity was originated in the 1600s and has surprisingly made its toll into the present day. It all started when a couple of Oxford University students introduced fagging ‘the right exercised by the older boy to make the younger do what he likes and what the younger one generally dislikes’ (Nuwer, 1990, p.117), pennalism and other hazing acts to Harvard that later on became an accepted part of Harvard life. Phi Beta Kappa, the first fraternity organized in Harvard began in the year 1781 and soon after expanded by establishing the Hasty Pudding Club on 1795 (Lipkins, 2006, p.4). In addition, these practices diversified and flourished in other campuses like Oxford and Cambridge. In a typical hazing event, freshmen were expected to recognize their inferiority to upperclassmen and this activity usually ends after they have completed their freshman year. Besides the underclassmen being called the victims of hazing, scholars on the other hand endured a training period and experienced the same kind of suffering or even worse that lasted for years. These scholars moved from school to school and introduced pennalism to universities in the United States.

human rights first SIGN UP FOR OUR NEWSLETTERS Get the latest news, appeals and campaign updates.

It was during the 18th century wherein fraternities started redirecting and thought that fagging is undemocratic and vaguely immoral. But this did not stop hazing from expanding as it slowly developed around the different states and universities throughout America. Student organizations found a need to establish hazing to extracurricular groups during the first quarter of the nineteenth century and later on between this time and the twentieth century, it started to build up into social fraternities (Nuwer, 1999, p.102). This unusual growth was made possible by the fact that more and more students choose to leave their own group or membership and forming fraternities became an easy way out to reconstruct a close social and emotional attachment with the other members of the community.

But he did not expect was fascinated by Tara Dupont, a talkative girl but can soothe the soul and mind, also changed his world. Tara and Tatsuya are completely unaware of yarn that connects them with the past, the secrets that destroy all hopes, feelings, and beliefs. When truth is revealed, also revealed the meaning of the sense of despair, helpless. The fact also is so painful to push one of them wanted to end her life. Autumn in Paris

Sandy lifted her face and stared at him, then said, "Well, as long as my face is not visible."

Summer in Seoul

Sandy, Han Soon-Hee, Indonesia-Korean mulatto girl who already knew Jung Tae-Woo from the beginning, but not in the least impressed.

They first met in early winter in Tokyo. During a month together, a new feeling begins to form. Then everything changed when one day one of them woke up and did not remember everything that happened during the last month, including one who had already become an important part in their life.

Jung Tae-Woo, Seoul's famous young singer who came back after four years of avoiding showbiz. "I just wanted to ask you to take pictures with me as my boyfriend," said Jung Tae-Woo at the girl in front of him.

From the beginning I've felt that something was dancing from Keiko Ishida. Everything feels good when she's there. Everything feels better when she's there. Currently in her heart there is someone waiting. Her first love. I hope she can stop thinking about that person and begin to see me. Because life without her is not a life. - Kazuto about Keiko

Summer in Seoul

My new neighbor, Kazuto Nishimura, came to Tokyo to find a new atmosphere. That's what he said, but I think the reason more than that. He was a good, fun, and reliable. Slowly, probably since Christmas Eve, I started to look at him differently. And seemed difficult to imagine life without him. - Keiko about Kazuto

Winter in Tokyo

But there are two things that are not accounted for Danny. The first is the possibility he will fall in love with Naomi Ishida whose cold, mysterious, and full of secret. And the second is a chance that it will uncover the dark secrets that could destroy both of them and the people they care about.

Winter in Tokyo

ILANA TAN

However Danny was not a quitter. He will try to approach Naomi to find out the reason why she was hostile.

Spring in London

Danny-Jo is a good person. Really! He is always being friendly, polite and pleasant. Then why did Naomi Ishida away from it like the plague? How can they work together in making this music video when the girl ignored him all the time? What mistakes has he done?

INTERIOR DESIGN

INTERIOR DESIGN Aptitude means the quality of being fit for the challenge of designing. Aptitude is having the natural ability or talent to develop a concept from a design brief and to create new environments. The graduation event will showcase the final presentations done by our students who have reached an adequate level of Aptitude to create, execute and remodel a space according to one’s dreams, requirements and objectives. Admire the fluidity of the newly created volumes, functions and spatial quality. Examine the choice of materials and colours that blend easily with the feeling that expresses the vocabulary of design. Visualize the scenarios of space design produced in order to modify a living, working or playing environment. I would like to take this opportunity to thank the team of dedicated lecturers, who guide, help and promote each of the students to become who they are now as designers: Rosah Lopes, Franz Gonzales, Thierry Delfosse, Dominik Raskin, as well as all our adjunct lecturers.

3D DESIGN

3D DESIGN “People project meaning onto objects. If an object allows you to interact with it, then it becomes part of your being, and over time you see things in it that first you might not have seen.” - Karim Rashid Considering this symbiosis, I would like to highlight the importance of our work as designers when we create objects that are able to generate a strong sense of dependency on them while in the hands of the users. We have to be able to always see how this dependency becomes a user trend. Over the years we have seen how objects can change our lives completely and drastically, an example of which being the mobile phone, which has not only created a sense of dependency in us, but has also generated fashion and style. When we buy a phone, we look for one that symbolizes our personality, lifestyle, colour, or even simply one that matches our clothes. The designer plays a crucial role in enhancing and encouraging this symbiosis between user and object, creating several models in shapes, colours and materials during the complex process of the creation and development of a product. Designers not only help companies gain more customers but also satisfy the necessities of those customers. Now that you have become part of the design community, I take this opportunity to give you my sincere congratulations on this new step in your life. I want to wish you a successful future and I hope that your path is full of many triumphs. I also want to say thanks to all the 3D Design staff members – Eric Lim, Sandra Fie and Paula Silvan – for their continuous support and guidance while mentoring our students.

FASHION DESIGN

FASHION DESIGN “As you see, I never stop drawing; it’s my favourite way of expressing myself. I have to be a little schizophrenic….and, as such, my precious notebooks of sketches accumulate. The evidence of a concept is never immediate. It requires a certain maturation, the intuition is verified, and time does its work.” - Antonio Marras I have always felt that a designer is like a painter, inspired by layers of colours and textures. The canvases in Fashion Design are the fabrics and textiles we use to create our work. These fabrics become garments that may be characterized by bold graphic prints, soft romantic floral, or just colours. Whatever the choice may be, your graduation collections create the tableaux for the catwalk. Many of the collections that we will see tonight are inspired by dramatic events or iconic individuals, at times folkloric, historical or visionary. The thread that runs between them all is that they each tell their own story, creating a modern mythology that pays tribute to the universal language we call fashion.

Doris Ku Te Hsun Extinct Land of Inuit Once known as Eskimos, the Inuit inhabit the Arctic region, one of the most forbidding territories on earth. Unfortunately, because of the earth’s global warming effect, today this group of people is facing the problem of extinction. Because of the greenhouse effect, this ancient group of people and their way of life may not survive the next century. We need to save the world, save them and let this ancient tribe pass into the next generation.

Sri Lukito Sari Poetronegoro Facade ‘Architecture is a small piece of this human equation, it has potential to make a difference, to enlighten and to enrich the human experience, to penetrate the barriers of misunderstanding and provide a beautiful context for life’s drama.’ – Frank Gehry This collection is inspired by the works of architect, Frank Gehry. His groundbreaking folded titanium sheet gives liquidity and movement to the otherwise very structural buildings. The idea of freeform and organic shapes within the rigid support of concrete and steel is what intrigues and inspires me to create the ‘Facade’ capsule collection.

Jessica Tjiptoning Meiji Ishin “I dreamed of a unified Japan, of a country strong and independent and modern... Now we have railroads and cannon and Western clothing. But we cannot forget who we are or where we come from. - Emperor Meiji; The Last Samurai I was inspired by the struggle of keeping the harmonisation within the people of Japan during the Meiji Restoration period. On the one hand, Japan was insisting in westernising their lifestyle; yet they wanted to keep their pride and live as traditional Samurais. I have used in this collection the idea of the two opposing forces and the clashing views of a Westernised Japan and its traditional Samurai way.

Youyu Minami ‘Viva La Frida’ “I paint my own reality. The only thing I know is that I paint because I need to, and I paint whatever passes through my head without any other consideration”. - Frida Kahlo My collection is a tribute to Mexican Surrealist artist Frida Kahlo. I was greatly inspired by her paintings, her use of bright colors and the Mexican style that fused with European influences such as Realism and Symbolism.

Felicia Raina Ardelia Femme Fatale “Cultivate your curves - they may be dangerous but they won’t be avoided. -Mae West Inspired by the 40s classic film noir, this collection unfolds the glamour and the seductive nature of the femme fatale. Cunning as a fox, they will lure their lover with their beauty and charm them into a dangerous situation. Their chameleonlike persona - sweet and innocent one moment, a bad girl in another - are just the contradiction every man adores.

Joanne Lee Rebellious Machinery “I do believe that technology is not something we use, but something we live, - Godfrey Reggio (filmmaker) Since the beginning of the 19th century, Man has become technically dependent on machines. As time passes and machines and technology continue to evolve, where will this technology bring us in the future? We ask ourselves the question of whether we have become too reliant on the machines. What will happen when the machines start to think for themselves? What will happen when these machines begin to take on human characteristics? Are we seeing a revolution in the future between man and machine?

Vinna Agustina Halim Tech No Socio “Style is a way to say who you are without having to speak - Chanel People have become addicted to technology and gadgets and rarely have the time to communicate with others face to face. We have become obsessed as a society with our devices; we are trapped by them and our lifestyle revolves around them. This collection plays on the idea of minimalism; it may appear to be simple at first glance yet it is this very simplicity that makes it complex. This simplicity defines us as an individual that is intriguing at first sight and demands closer attention from the onlooker.

Maureen Avista Kosasih Jolie Laide “I think there is beauty in everything. What ‘normal’ people would perceive as ugly, I can usually see something of beauty in it.” – Alexander McQueen

Delna Antia Surrealismo “We watch our dreams in the theatre of the night” – Sigmund Freud Dreams are a place where the mind runs uncensored, so that would in turn mean that our dreams are where we can really be ourselves and not worry about the rest of the world. Inspired by the collaborations between Salvador Dali and Elsa Schiaparelli, the collection plays with the idea of Surrealism and portrays the concept of dreams from my perspective.

Sariel Yuting Rocaille For my final collection I was inspired by the French Rococo period of the mid-18th century. Rococo Art and architecture was ornate and made strong use of creamy pastel colours and asymmetrical designs, curvilinear lines and gold. I have always been fascinated by the elements of feminine undertones of this era especially in the fashion of the times with its delicate fabrics, laces and ornamentations; these were the starting point in creating the garments of the collection.

Venezia Koh Iron in the Soul ‘Being powerful is like being a lady. If you have to tell people you are, you aren’t.’ - Margaret Thatcher The Iron Lady is what comes to mind went we think about a strong-willed female not to be trifled with. The collection embodies the spirit of The Iron Lady: strong, confident and powerful, well-balanced with femininity with a sense of seriousness and a feeling of empowerment.

Keren Angelina Suanda Tales of Peoples A collection inspired by Indigenous Tribes all over the world Everything has their starters Never let one perish without trace Surrounded by the futures Shall not be a reason to move on and forget their roots Beauty belongs to everyone and everything Don’t let them just sits there and rots Pride of heritage should no more be only in words Put them into action Wear them with pride From every nation and tongue From generation to generation The heritage shall live on!

Pooja Singh Lady Macbeth This collection is based on the poetic story written by William Shakespeare on Macbeth and his ambitious Lady (Macbeth). Lady Macbeth’s vision of future was magnificent and powerful but in the process of achieving it she lost her soul and her sanity. I have drawn inspiration from this fictional character of women being mysterious, ambitious and full of desires. Her pretence of strength diminishes as she fights the consequences of her evilness. Lady Macbeth’s attempts at suppressing her consciousness fails and in the end she chooses death when she could no longer bear the torments of her guilt.

Janney, Ma Jin Yan Military Retro My collection is inspired by the military look of World War II. The early 40’s was a time when most fashion ceased to exist as many fashion houses shut down because of the war effort. All over the world fashion came to a standstill, and clothing became either utilitarian or military. This military trend is still influencing us today almost 60 years on; we see it appear on the catwalks in new incarnations. Military is here to stay.

Elaine Chen Yi Shi Who Invented the First Flight? I was always fascinated by man’s early desire to take to the air, and after hundreds of years of trials and tribulations, the first flight was made by the Wright brothers in 1903. What followed was the invention of flying machines, airplanes and rockets to explore the depths of outer space. This collection is inspired by the history of man’s desire to fly, from the Utopian mythology to the practical study of flying machines. This collection is a wardrobe of fashionable garments for the air travelers of the future.

Amber Chen Deconstruction When people break down something, the action of breaking is driven by its own desire and intent to create a new form; it is the reconstruction we talk about. In other words, destroying is also creating. Hope can be seen in this negative situation. From the very beginning that the idea of deconstruction appeared in the field of fashion, it has already connected with the role of trailblazer. I try to translate this cutting edge idea in my collection. I believe when it is imaginable, it is achievable. What I have done is exactly what I am desperate to express from the bottom of my heart.

Vika Octaviantri Boudicca ‘I am descended from mighty men! But I am not fighting for my kingdom and wealth now. I am fighting as an ordinary person for my last freedom, my bruised body, and my outraged daughters. Considering how many you are fighting and why! Then you will win this battle or perish. That is what I, a woman. Plan to do! Let men live in slavery if they will ‘. –Boudicca Boudicca is a legend – this woman who fought and sacrificed her life to defend her tribe and her rights. She is so inspiring that she emerges throughout history in many incarnations. Her trials and tribulations becomes the root of the women’s liberation. Fierce, strong and heroic are parts of the “Boudicca” that inspire this collection.

Cayno Song Shanyu Tea Horse Road With a fascination for the traditional culture, my graduation collection has drawn inspiration from “Tea Horse Road, one of the three greatest ancient trade routes in history. This route which winds its way through the most difficult natural condition has shaken my faith. Tea is for a quiet heart and Horse is a free soul. I chose these to be my inspiration, sending the message of my selfidentity as well as my yearning for freedom and adventure. I blend the Zen spirit and, at the same time, show the abstract philosophy by a deconstruction, thus giving the collection a new aspect by combining ancient and modern ideals.

Melita Anthea Commedia Dell’Arte - Arlecchina For this collection I was inspired by famous Italian theatrical production of the Commedia Dell’Arte. Commedia Dell’Arte is an improvisational theatre that was popular during 16th century and was improvised around the several conventional situations such as love, jealousy, age and infidelity. One of the most famous characters is Arlecchina. She is fun, playful, smart, and a trickster; she is the female version of the character known as Arlecchino or the Harlequin.

Yong Xin Min The Moderns The nineteen twenties has been considered historically as the era of modernization, it broke from tradition, and developed a new lifestyle. After almost a century it still has a profound effect on today’s lifestyle and will continue to affect us in the future.

Katrina Zhang Boy Meets Pop Art Pop art was an art movement that was founded in the mid 1950’s. The pop artists favored commercial methods of production, similar to the objects they were using, as it meant that unlimited reproduction could be made. Pop art was easy to understand, and easy to recognize because it was iconic and accessible to the mass public. It is one of those art movements that still continue to evolve today and it is something that is tangible to all people.

Siah Kar Hoe The Road Warrior “Mad” Max Rockatansky  (What is the little square after “… tansky”? Is it a character I’m not seeing?) has long since forsaken Man’s laws as his humanity was lost to barren roads and a heinous revenge for his slaughtered family. He forged a new life in the wastelands as a scavenging vigilante, living on the razor’s edge of a brutal existence. (Another little square before “With”)  With the collapse of society following a nuclear holocaust, the last remnants of law and order have fallen and psycho scavengers, feral gangs and sadistic enterprisers rule what’s left of the desolate earth, where fuel is the key to survival. Max stands as a lone, black clad scavenger of the apocalypse, and a true anti-hero at its finest.

Nguyen Thi Nhu Y, Lin Portrait of Art “They are awesome. They are the best fans. They body paint. They scream. They get us pumped up. They’re awesome.” - Britney Brown This collection is inspired by the body painting of the Surma and Mursi in the Omo valley in Ethiopia. The idea of using body paint or body art has always been about conjuring health and power.

Michelle Angeline The Eccentricity Becomes a Person Anna Piaggi said “I have always liked to mix my look, every dress tells a story. I am very careful about how I look. There are no rules. The world is your oyster, whether you end up looking fabulously odd and asymmetrical or chicly reined-in and conventional. By listening to your own opinion, the possibilities are endless. The world thinks eccentricity in great things is genius, but in small things, only crazy

Caroline Indriana Purnomo Sedimented with Time Fossils are typically preserved when they are buried under many layers of sand and mud. Under great pressure the sand and the mud becomes sedimentary rock. Because of the pressure they become unique and beautiful, you can feel the softness and the hardness even when you are not touching it.

Wucheng Kejia The Romance Between Light and Shadow Light and shadow - both of them are visional yet they really exist. The changing process between light and shadow is like an endless game of hide and seek, every moment during the process is perceptible but untouchable; that is another depiction of romance.

Dessy Wijaya The Wild West One day, as I was sitting by my front window daydreaming, I happened to glance up just as the sun was setting. The sky turned an astonishing shade of red contrasted against the blue sky, it was very beautiful. It brought to mind the time of the wild west, it was an attempt to evoke a past that is clearly still with us today

Zhang Beijing, Stephanie Dark-Moon My inspiration is derived from tales of the great vampire hunter Gabriel Van Helsing. In most vampire lore, Van Helsing is the one who brings about the destruction of the Noble Vampire, Count Dracula, but not before he is attacked by a werewolf during the blood moon. These characters are the inspiration for the collection, stemming from the idea that all evil takes place during the rise of the dark moon.

Zuo Yuanna Tragedy and Comedy In classical Greek theatre, Tragedy was always depicted by a weeping mask and Comedy by a laughing one. It is the perfect idea that one can be happy and sad at the same time that inspired me, how one emotion cannot exist without the other.

Fenny Wong Sunken Legacy The protocol forced couples to separate, families to bid each other goodbye. It happened after midnight — when the cold North Atlantic Ocean was freezing enough to make people suffer hypothermia. Bodies were floating in the water, marking  one of the deadliest maritime disasters in history. (a little square before the word “one”) Inspired by the sinking of luxury superliner Titanic 100 years ago, Sunken Legacy portrays grandeur that mankind could boast about, but fate could as easily crush.

Ren Dongmei Inverted Reflection in Water My inspiration comes from a cup named “ANAMORPHOSE. It refers to a distorted image that only appears normal when viewed with or reflected from a special device. The Anamorphic Cup, made of stainless steel with a polished mirror finish, is the first product to employ the centuries old visual play of the anamorphic cylinder. The porcelain saucer is printed with distorted images or words, which look normal when reflected on the surface of the cup.

Natalie Lim Hui Yu Loved To Death The beauty of a destructive relationship can be told through the story of Sid and Nancy, a couple that was so broken yet so tightly bound together. They were often caught up in a world of their own, away from reality. In this world they craved misery and torment, at times one against the other while others may only dream of being so perfectly mismatched.

Huy Dong Clouds Have you ever wished you could fly? Imagine that the clouds could help you rise up to the sky and keep you away from all the social prejudices in this world. No matter if you are boy or girl; surely you have a soft and free dream floating with all the white pillows above. Fly once in your life, stay within your own sky and feel the freedom.

Michelle Cecilia Tedja Sacred Splendour Gothic Cathedrals from the medieval period are fancied with stained glass windows. The stained glass windows in this period are also known as rose windows, because sometimes the colourful glass pieces are arranged to resemble the petals of a flower. To see beyond the intricate framework, the pieces are fused together to depict an ecclesiastical story. This period’s stained glass was also influenced by the illuminated manuscripts of the Middle Ages, thus the colours of the glass are just as brilliant. The Gothic architecture lines are long, lean, elegant ad characterised with arches, ribbed vaults or flying buttresses. Gothic Cathedrals are also svelte, glorious with the splendour of the stained glass, which, when hit by light, brighten up the roomy sacred sanctuary.

Samuel Tran Nur-Chic It is all about the nurses that work at the clinics in 23rd century. They are super chic and fashion forward. Everyone follows the style. Minimal, clean and sleek looks are their signatures. I would describe my collection as a “hygienic one since my theme is the breath of air, and the inspirations are clinics and nurses. Purity, cleanliness and futurity are the elements of this collection.

J.C. Makarios (Joy Chiang) Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious: something beyond, awesome, marvellous and beautiful. Looking into the Kaleidoscope, I saw a mini Universe;  changes between the patterns creating the scene when the world begins, where the firmament is formed by God as a Love gift to his people. Looking at the patch worked blanket; I saw Love and joy; between every stitched lines, and mix-matching of different swatches, indicate the silent Love from my Grandma to her new born grandchild. In capturing all these joyous moment, of creating something with Love that completes the story behind my collection.

Lucas Le – Le Vu Kim Long Lonesomnia It doesn’t really matter who or how old we are, whether we are educated or illiterate, rich or poor, we all have our secret thoughts. And I believe we all have our hidden corners of loneliness. Lonesome is when you are all by yourself, in reality, in sub consciousness. The latter is the important one; even when you are surrounded by your beloved friends and family, sometimes you are still isolated. You close all doors and retreat in your gloomy world because the only one who understands you, you believe, is yourself. Lonesome is like a fierce creature, which can take over control of your whole body and thoughts if there is a burning motive; it destroys you slowly inside. And when the emotional pain does not hurt any more, you start to hurt yourself physically.

Azmin Khambata A Thousand Paper Crane Wish Sadako Sasaki was a symbol of peace, whose statue stands beside the Hiroshima World War II museum. She was about 10 years old when she realized she had leukaemia. Despite the war, she did not give up living and spreading love, hope and peace. One day when she was in the hospital her friend reminded her about an old Japanese story, that if a person folds a thousand paper cranes the Gods will grant them one wish, Sadako started to fold cranes immediately wishing she would get better. During her journey to achieve a thousand paper cranes she met some children who had given up on life; she taught them to live life again and told them that life was worth living. This story has moved me, teaching me how to value life. Sadako Sasaki has inspired me even beyond this collection.

Lusiana Liauw THE WITCHING HOUR “Evil is always possible, and goodness is eternally difficult. Take me from this earth an endless night, this, the end of life. From the dark I feel your lips and taste your bloody kiss. In the very depths of hell, do not demons love one another?” - Anne Rice My collection is about the art of witchcraft, the art that people are rarely aware of. It was inspired by a book called “The Witching Hour” by famous writer Anne Rice. This book traces the history of the infamous Mayfair Witches beginning during the Dark Ages spanning to modern times. This story tells a tale that is pure horror, fantasy and seduction.

Tivani Tria Andini This Charming Man My collection is based on the iconic dandies of the past; Beau Brummell, Oscar Wilde, Lord Byron, Mr. Darcy, to name a few. Dandies are people who dare to violate the rules of fashion and to show off to others who do not pay attention to details of demeanour and clothing.

FASHION MARKETING

FASHION MARKETING An aptitude is a talent; a predilection, bent or gift, either innate or acquired, to do something well. We are all born with aptitudes and talents. The challenge is to discover them, and get the right support and guidance to develop them. Through hard work and perseverance, aptitudes can be improved and can enable us to fulfil our potential. Education is one way to achieve this, by “drawing forth from within, helping you to realize your full potential. Socrates, the original educator, believed that the highest good for any human being is happiness; the more a person knows, the better they are able to reason out and make choices that will bring them true happiness. You all chose to come to Raffles College to develop and refine your aptitudes. I hope we have helped you do so. People around you will always have advice and suggestions but now is the time you must make your own way in the world. You may get things wrong and make mistakes; however, remember this: People who don’t make mistakes never make anything else either. Be courageous and set out to excel, to deploy your aptitudes to help others, and be happy. I wish you courage and conviction as you go forth. I hope you realize your full potential and have no regrets.

Raffles News Making a Difference with Spark Raffles Design Institute extends our heartiest congratulations to Biniya Arul Jothi for clinching the Bronze Award in Spark 2011/2012 Competitions, Spark: Concept category! Spark is a community of designers and creative people, bound together by the idea that design can make significant, positive changes in the world. Concerned for the education of the visually impaired, Biniya was inspired by the values of Spark, and decided to participate in the competition, while pursuing her Master of Design with Raffles College of Design and Commerce (Australia). In her course of research, Biniya discovered that visually impaired people use Braille, a six-dot code to read and write. Today, Braille utilization is decreasing rapidly. The main reason is the barriers in writing Braille. The tools used for writing are not portable, difficult to use and its usage is restricted to a specialised room. In order to overcome this issue with Braille, Biniya proposed the Braille Punch Card. Biniya proposed to have Braille embossed on the surface of the paper of the Braille Punch Card. The embossed Braille, when pressed, gets flattened. The required letter can thus be “typed” Biniya Arul Jothi, easily. To identify the top and bottom of the card, Biniya Winner of Spark: Concept Category 2011/2012 suggested the shape of the Punch Card to be rectangular with three of its corner cut. Simple notes and numbers can be noted easily with the help of the Braille Punch Card. The Punch Card also comes with a divider at the lower region, to avoid wastage. A small cut near the divider, helps the visually impaired person to identify the smaller region. Braille Punch Card is an ingenious concept, designed to help the visually impaired people to write down notes more practically, and not be restricted to a fixed environment. It is portable and easy to use.

Braille Punch Card, making Braille more Portable to 284 million Visually Impaired People

Biniya shares her experience with us: “It was a great opportunity to participate and win an award in “Spark”, an international competition. The amazing part is that, the platform to participate in the competition was provided by the College. My design “Braille Post-it” for visually impaired people was selected by the internal jury from College and was sent to the competition. The competition was a two stage selection process. Lectures guided and supported me through every stage of the competition. The design won a bronze award

in the final stage. I embarked on the 1 year Masters of Design programme at Raffles College. The Masters programme is a more intense programme that really puts you through your paces and exposes you to a wider design horizon. We are encouraged to think about what consumers and markets need today, and to channel our energies and creativity to meet these needs. I take this opportunity to thank my lecturers, all my classmates and parents who helped and supported me. Hailing from fashion design background and designing a Braille product is stimulating to me. It is a definite truth that masters program in Raffles offers a multidisciplinary design approach in its curriculum, because of which I am an award recipient.”

Raffles News Swinging with Success at the HSBC Women’s Champions 2012 Caddy Bib Design Contest Raffles Design Institute is proud to be the exclusive partner for the 5th HSBC Women’s Champions 2012 Caddy Bib Design Contest. Raffles Designer Michelle Darmawan was crowned winner of the HSBC Women’s Champion 2012, making it the third consecutive win for Raffles Design Institute for this annual contest. Michelle was challenged to create a caddy bib design, with the key focus on the cross-cultural elements of the tournament while reflecting the global presence of the tournament sponsor. Her winning design was worn by the HSBC Caddy of the Year- Jason Hamilton during the HSBC Women’s Champions tournament weekend, gaining global exposure. Michelle said, “The 5th Women’s Champions is represented by the silhouette of a female golfer, delivering a powerful swing. The silhouette reiterates the nature of the golf tournament bringing professional female golfers from around the world with no agenda on race or nationality to compete. The myriads of triangles surrounding the silhouette are derivatives of the iconic HSBC triangles. These triangles are angled to portray a “breaking through” feeling. Red represents HSBC’s corporate colour, hints of pink to imply women, hues of grey, yellow and blue to portray Singapore’s endless rows of skyscrapers and blue skies.” With all the hard work put in, Michelle received S$1,000 cash from HSBC and tickets to the HSBC Women’s Champion 2012 tournament. “Being the winner came a bit of a surprise as the works of the other contestants were comparatively competitive. Presenting the work to the judges was nerve wrecking. Despite all, I would like to extend my thanks to the teachers and Mr. Kenji Choo who has given me moral support and advice throughout this competition. ”

Raffles News Triumph Inspiration Award 2012 For the fifth consecutive year, Raffles Designers emerged winners in the Triumph Inspiration Award (TIA). Joining past national winners, Ms Afton Chen (TIA 2008), Ms Ada Yeong (TIA 2009), Ms Grace Eliana Sugiarto (TIA 2010), and Ms Winnie Setio (TIA 2011), Ku Te Hsun beat 16 other finalists to emerge as 1st runner-up, with her winning design, “The Combination of Solid and Softness”. This year, Raffles Designers were challenged with the theme - Dragons and Butterflies. This theme provided an exciting array of extremes and opposites which can be incorporated into strikingly creative designs. Dragons and Butterflies are not only quintessential Chinese symbols, but also opposing elements. This was an exciting chance to blend the opposing elements into one harmonious design like what Raffles Designer, Te Hsun has achieved. Centred on the theme, Te Hsun was greatly inspired by the prints on the butterfly wings and Chinese dragon scales. Playing with the colour combinations, Te Hsun created a great contrast using black and green. Black symbolised strength and seduction, while green, together with the scale texture of the dragon, represented youth and femininity. The cut out design on the chest and corset were inspired by the aesthetic prints on butterfly wings. This year, Raffles Designers presented to a panel of five judges; Ms. Esther Toh, Brand Manager of Triumph Singapore, Mr. Keith Png, Designer of KOOPS and Owner of Hide & Seek, Ms. Pearly Tham, Fashion and Beauty Editor of Her World Magazine, Ms. Sulian Tan, and Mr. Yeoh Wee Teck, Editor from The New Paper’s correspondent. Online votes were cast on the Triumph Facebook page for the most popular lingerie design. With close to a thousand votes, “Intertwinement” by Raffles Designer Chua Xiang Ting led the competition with almost twice the number of the votes received by the next closest contender. Raffles Designer Xiang Ting was inspired by Song Dynasty painter Chen Rong’s painting, “The Nine Dragons” and Damien Hirst’s butterfly paintings as well as the symbolism behind both creatures.

Raffles News Raffles Design Institute Awarded Champion of 2012 Annual Packaging Design In preparation for the upcoming 2012 Autumn Festival contestants have been challenged to design a digital format 3D visual presentation board, and to produce an actual mock-up of a digital design. “Design a Mooncake Box” is an Open Category packaging design competition organized by Design Packaging Concept Pte Ltd. A panel of five judges comprising of Mr. Joseph Chia from ITE Bishan, Mr. Timothy Leong from ITE Tampines, Mr. Scott Lee from Nanyang Polytechnic, Mr Kenji Choo, Programme Director from Raffles Design Institute and Mr. Richard Woo, Executive Director of Design Packaging Concept Pte Ltd went through each design presented by the Top 10 contestants. The Annual Packaging Contest 2012 saw the crowning of Raffles Designer Joanne Lee May Teng as Winner of the Design A Mooncake Box 2012 and Raffles Designer Sherlivia Kurniawan achieving the Merit Award. Joanne’s concept was inspired by the Chinese traditional wooden door. There is a Chinese pattern printed on the locking system with wooden door like panels on the box. Opening the box gives one the feeling of going through a door that leads to a joyful celebration, that being the Mid-Autumn Festival. A vibrant and contemporary colour combination of hot pink and turquoise is used. These are trendy and cool festive colours, which could easily draw the interest of anyone from young working adults to grandparents alike. The traditional handicraft of the box has been recreated in a colourful and interesting way by using modern illustrations. Thus, Joanne hopes this will have greater emotional appeal to consumers. The design of the packaging box is printed in full colour onto art paper mounted on art board with matt lamination. The illustration is printed on 150gsm transparent paper to allow some opacity so as to vaguely reveal the mooncakes inside the box. The combination of materials means that the packaging is economical, light in weight, eco-friendly and most importantly, lower in production costs. As a result of winning the competition Joanne was awarded $800 in cash, a trophy of achievement, and a pair of movie tickets. With 402 votes under her belt, Joanne led the competition by 166 votes; she emerged not only as overall champion, but also as the outright favourite in the popularity contest. Sherlivia’s concept of a Chinese lantern was inspired by those ones traditionally lit during the Mid-Autumn Festival. The lantern was designed to contain four mooncakes. Inside the lantern there are four slots that can be removed so that it can be transformed into a working lantern. Essentially, it can also be used as a container to store small trinkets or jewellery. The design has four die cut sides to create a more interesting design. The top of the packaging is magnetic to ensure full closure of the box.

Two Raffles Designers, David Chandra and Priyatna Sungkono, did Raffles proud for winning the Merit Prize in this competition. The Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) is a rapid transit system forming the major component of the railway system in Singapore, spanning the entire city-state. This art competition for MRT hoardings was held in conjunction with the construction of the new Downtown Line 3 (DTL3). Raffles Designers were invited to share their vision of “Going Places with the Downtown Line” in an original non-photographic artwork. Winning and selected entries will be reproduced by LTA for exhibitions on hoardings at the DTL3 stations.

“Going Places with the Downtown Line” by Raffles Designer Priyatna Sungkono Raffles graduate Priyatna Sungkono built his concept simply based on the number “3” from the title “Downtown Line 3”. The track in his artwork was designed as an island, forming the number “3” with the MRT operating on it from Singapore Expo station to Fort Canning Park station. This artwork incorporates the expressions of satisfied passengers on their journey from place to place, made convenient by the newly established DTL3. Priyatna shared that it was fun to participate in this competition, especially with an artwork that reflects fun, colour and energy. He was very happy to be awarded the Merit Prize and added that the achievement inspired him to improve himself as a designer to achieve better results in future competitions. Priyatna would like to thank and extend his appreciation to his lecturers for their continuous guidance and support.
