EDITOR’S NOTE Welcome to this first edition for 2014! Firstly I would like to introduce our new Deputy Chairman Mr Tan Soo Nan who joined us on 1st November 2013, and welcome him to his new role. You can read about Mr Tan’s illustrious career on page 6.
As we gear up for the new year, there are many club activities and developments in the pipeline. We are in full swing in terms of the Lake course improvements, and having planted TifEagle Ultradwarf Bermuda grass on the greens, we look forward to the grow-in period over these coming months to meet our May opening date. An update is on page 15. 2013 was a bumper year of trips and activities organised by our hardworking lifestyle committee. The golf excursion to Siem Reap, Cambodia, proved to be a popular one, however it wasn’t just all about golf. The members who travelled to this historical part of the country

Other activities included a Christmas golf safari competition which was graced by the Political Counsellor of the South Africa High Commission, and not forgetting our younger players, a junior golf camp to Ria Bintan was also organised for seven youngsters and their parents. Our regulars in this issue include a smorgasbord of food and beverage delights at the club, putting tips from Chris Marriott, and how to enjoy injury-free golf. Yes it is possible! Wishing you all successful golfing and a fantastic and prosperous year of the horse, and hope to see you soon on the fairways!

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
H
ow quickly 2013 has passed and a new year is here. Looking back at 2013, if I were to describe it in one word; the word “challenging” comes to mind, which is not exactly what the General Committee had in mind for the 25th Anniversary of the Club. Firstly, we were faced with a virtually new management team. Adam Robertson joined as the Club’s new General Manager. Shortly after, Steve Bruton came on board as our new Course Superintendent with a resume that will make other Singapore Golf Clubs envious. We also had to find replacements for our Finance, Marketing and Facilities positions. The new members of staff are settling in and will be expected to contribute greatly to the Club’s operations in the coming year. Secondly, the Singapore Land Authority’s announcements on the issue of lease extensions for golf courses in Singapore created an air of uncertainty about the future, not only to RCC but to all golf clubs. The General Committee believes this was a major cause of why members voted down the proposal to redevelop Palm Course in August 2013. A group of members requisitioned an Extraordinary General Meeting for a vote of no confidence against the President. No reasons for this drastic action were given in the Requisition and none were offered even at the EOGM. On the advice of the Club’s lawyers that the President is entitled to know the reasons so he would be able to defend himself, and with none being offered, a vote would be against the Rules of Natural Justice. Accordingly, no voting was allowed. Mr Tan Soon Nan was appointed Deputy Chairman of the Club. He is the CEO of Singapore Pools. The Club had a meeting with Ministry of Law (parent of SLA), SLA, URA and JTC. We managed to get a response from Min. Law that: “there is no plan not to renew RCC’s lease”. The Government’s five year master plan has left RCC land untouched but some other golf clubs had their land rezoned. This adds hope that RCC land lease is not a topical issue. I believe that members of golf clubs are beginning to realise that their land for golfing is not sacrosanct. They are on short term (30 year) leases and could be even shorter on renewal, given the Government’s plan for future land use in densely populated Singapore.
2
RAFFLES COUNTRY CLUB
Allied to this is a feeling that maximum utilisation be made of the existing golf lease. Every year is precious and RCC has up to year 2028. Some 280 active golfers in RCC evidently think so. They have requisitioned for an EOGM to get approval to upgrade the Palm Course. They have even agreed that members should contribute up to $3000 each to ensure the success of this project. An EOGM is scheduled in the first half of February 2014. Our Lake Course greens will be returfed with Tif-eagle to replace the tired Tidwarf that was reused when Lake was upgraded more than a decade ago. The greenside bunkers and green surrounds will also be touched up. Visually, Lake will look pretty much the same but the greens and greenside area will be far more challenging to all levels of players. All 18 greens have been returfed and the careful growingin of the turf will take us till May before the greens will be put to play. There is every expectation that Lake will be greatly improved for members’ enjoyment and will rise up the golf course rankings significantly. There were five Interclub golf games held in 2013, a great jump over previous years. Five golf clubs in China have reached reciprocal agreements with us, and they are located in Shanghai and the nearby cities. Other reciprocal agreements signed this year include Avondale in NSW, Australia, Ashinoko in Japan and KGSAAS in Malaysia. Lifestyle has organised golf trips not only to countries in South East Asia but also had the opportunity to promote an exciting golfing trip to South Africa for RCC members. Many members have also arranged private golf trips to our reciprocal clubs in the Klang Valley where the equivalent of nine 18hole golf courses await their visits. Again, if I were to choose one word to predict 2014, I would say this word is “Optimism”. I take this opportunity to wish all members and their families a belated Merry Christmas and Happy New Year.

STAFF FAMILY DAY
M
onday 9th December 2013 may have marked 25 years of RCC Staff Days, but it also was the occasion of the very first RCC Staff Family Day, in recognition of the support family members have shown all these years. A total of 111 staff, together with 57 family members, attended the event held on the East Coast beach. Thanks to the perfect weather, many enjoyed the sumptuous BBQ and other activities like drawing/writing contests for children, a cooking contest for the mothers and wives, sports games, lucky draw and, last but not least, the largest number of Long Service awards, handed out by President Simon Yuen. RCC would like to thank all members, staff and sponsors who have supported the club and made this day possible. Here’s to a great 2014 to all!

Letters of Compliment Review sent in from by Mosto on TripAdvisor
Dear Elaine
“Superb golfing experience”
I would like to thank the Captain and Management of the Raffles Club for their warm hospitality during the South African Golf Day on 21 December 2013.
Reviewed 3 December 2013 I was invited to play a mini tournament on the Palm Course which was well maintained with fairways requiring strategic execution. There were also many lakes and sand dunes. The club house is very relaxing and is staffed with friendly employees. It overlooks the beautiful golf courses and is a greatly relaxing place to sit with a drink after one’s game. There are also clean and spacious locker rooms and bath areas.
The event was a great success and we are looking forward to partner with the prestigious Raffles Club and its esteemed members to foster stronger relations between the communities of South Africa and Singapore.
Hi Elaine,
On a more personal note, thank you for going out of your way to make Thinta and myself feel right at home. You have been a wonderful hostess.
Many thanks for you and your team with all your hard work to ensure this year’s tournament a huge success.
We also cherish the gifts, which will serve as a reminder of a wonderful evening.
If I receive any feedback on the course, I will pass it along. We will be having a post mortem meeting sometime soon, therefore if you have any feedback on your end I would love to hear it.
I have truly enjoyed the socialising with your members after the formal event, which provided me with a wonderful opportunity to “let the hair down” after a hectic time following the passing of our beloved former President Mandela. Please pass my best regards to all your charming friends who contributed to the success of the evening.
Things that went well, things to be improved on etc. Please thank your team on behalf of AmCham for their wonderful support. Best, Courtney Young Programming and Corporate Events Manager The American Chamber of Commerce in Singapore (AmCham Singapore) “My Special Thanks to Social Lifestyle team as well as RCC management team, Novem and Roderick for assisting and organising such a wonderful and enjoyable trip. This is the first time I joined a trip organised by the Lifestyle team where I get the opportunity to meet more members. We had a great time enjoying food and golf as well as great company. Looking forward to more trips from the Lifestyle team. Well done! Keep up the good work. Mr Albert Tan

LAKE COURSE IMPROVEMENTS UPDATE
T
he new TifEagle Ultradwarf Bermuda grass will arrive on December 17th to 21st for planting. We have completed many tasks in preparation for the new grass as follows:
• Hired Neil Haworth of N&H Golf Design to review and provide technical guidance with the green contours during the resurfacing work. • Removal of old grass and thatch layer of 10cm depth. • Adjusted green contours for better surface drainage and tie-in to the green surrounds. In several cases all the water was flowing out the front of the green and Neil adjusted the surface drainage in two to three directions where allowed. • Addition of low cut chipping areas around the greens for increased playability options. • Re turfed the green surrounds with new Zoysia matrella. • Installed a root barrier system to keep the TifEagle grass separated from the Zoysia matrella. • Adjusted the root zone in some of the older greens and added new sand to achieve the proper depth of over 40cm. • The root zone was adjusted with the proper soil fertiliser amendments as per the soil test results before planting. We look forward to a successful planting and grow-in period over the next few months to meet the early May opening date.

Christmas Golf safari competition
C
hristmas cheer was in abundance as a large number of golfers teed off in the Christmas Golf Safari Competition which was held on Saturday December 21st on the Palm course.
Graced by Andre van Straten, Political Counsellor of the South Africa High Commission, the event was played using the Greensome format (a partnership of two players with the winning team being the one which returned the lowest nett score).

The weather Gods smiled kindly upon the participants, with no weather interruption – in fact the first flight came back in under four hours after 18 holes and before the 1pm shot gun start of the competition, many ladies were spotted decorating their buggies. At the post-tournament cocktail and prize presentation, many members took the opportunity to tuck into some traditional turkey and South African canapÊs, in addition to sampling some fine bottles of South African wine which was made possible by our generous sponsor, Out of Africa Golf Tour Ltd.

GOLF TIPS: Set the Wrists For a Pure Stroke
T
here is of course more than one way to achieve the desired result when putting. The varied styles used by tour players of the world prove that unlike diving and gymnastics, golfers are not allocated points for style, form or technique... not a game of ‘HOW’? But instead, ‘HOW MANY’? BUT REMEMBER THIS: A complicated setup leads to complicated movements which will then be very difficult to repeat, especially when under pressure!! In this article, RCC junior golfer Zachary Ong demonstrates the positive improvements we have made to his putting setup, with the main focus being on the grip, wrist and forearm angles. At just 9yrs of age, Zachary is certainly not going to win any long drive competitions, however there is absolutely nothing holding him or any other amateur golfer back from developing a pure putting stroke. Zachary recently showed his huge potential and did Raffles Country Club proud by recording a commendable 3rd place finish in his age division at the Kids Golf World Championship, played on the difficult Cempaka Course at Palm Resort in Malaysia.
BEFORE Zachary previously gripped the club quite weak in his left hand (left hand too far underneath the grip), causing the putter shaft, ball and his hips to all be positioned too far away from the target. See image 1. Zachary’s hands were previously very low at address with his forearms literally resting on his body. The forearms were not in line with the shaft and the toe of the putter sat slightly up off the ground. See image 2.
02
04
AFTER Zachary’s grip is more neutral, creating similar angles in both wrists. The grip end of the shaft now points slightly left of his belt buckle allowing the ball to be positioned more forward in the stance. The improved wrists angles have increased the tilt or angle in his spine (right shoulder sits lower than the left). See Image 3. Zachary’s hands are now higher from the ground and further from the body and his forearms are properly aligned with the shaft. The toe of the putter now sits more flush with the ground. See Image 4. Finally, you will notice that Zachary no longer putts wearing his glove. While there are no rules in this department, the large majority of the world’s very best putters will opt to remove their glove when arriving on the green to create more feel. Achieving good wrist angles will set you up nicely for a simple and pure stroke!

RIA BINTAN JUNIOR GOLF CAMP
A
handful of RCC juniors recently had the opportunity to play on one of the region’s most awarded and celebrated golf courses.
RCC’s Mark Higgs accompanied seven junior players, together with five parents, to the Gary Player-designed championship course at Ria Bintan Golf Club from 28th to 29th November. Here, they were able to pick up some valuable golf tips, bond with other juniors and play on one of the best courses in South-East Asia. Ng Jing Wen’s parent, Dennis Ng, was particularly pleased with the organisation of the junior golf camp. “It was a helpful and interesting event! The kids enjoyed themselves and had fun at Ria Bintan, and the camp also helped to improve their focus and golf game. I will definitely let my children participate again.” Added Alex Wong, father of Chloe and Naomi Wong, “I think the trip was well planned with regards to travel, hotel bookings, transportation and meals. Thanks again for coordinating.” Stay tuned for more junior golf camps coming up in the future!

TIPS FOR INJURYFREE GOLF
O
ne of the challenging aspects of being an amateur or professional golfer is that there’s bound to be some element of injury along the way. Lower back pain, golf elbow, shoulder, hand and wrist aches, niggling injuries and the odd twinge – these, and more, are all part and parcel of the game of golf. While some players may get lucky and escape these ailments during their playing years, many (and professional golfers are not immune here) can experience some sort of discomfort from playing the game. In the past, the focus on healing injuries has mostly been done once it develops, by physiotherapists, chiropractors etc., but the trend is to try and prevent an injury before it occurs. Tan Tock Seng Hospital (TTSH) has a GOLFfit program which provides structured golf-fit programs in such a set up. It also has the convenience of having in-house specialists all in the same place, plus a very well equipped therapeutic exercise area. Its GOLFfit programme emphasises golf specific screening and assessment. The objectives are to maximise golf performance (increase swing distance and precision through improving flexibility, balance, strength and stability), prevent injuries and deformities such as scoliosis especially in young golfers, enhance longevity in the game, as well as treat any golf-related injuries. Other golf injury treatment programs tend to focus on the treatment of injuries after they have occurred, but the physiotherapists conducting the programme have been trained in golf-specific rehabilitation and biomechanical analysis of the golf swing. The programme offers a holistic approach to a better, safer and longer game, and a golf specialist physiotherapist will conduct a comprehensive assessment of your body. Based on your specific conditions and needs, the physiotherapist will tailor a program accordingly. More and more golfers have embraced the study of Pilates – a form of exercise developed by Joseph Pilates, which emphasises the balanced development of the body through core strength, flexibility, and awareness - and have included it in their overall fitness and wellbeing regime. A number of touring pros have completed Pilates courses and it has also become a popular exercise for amateur golfers who want to improve their core stability and movement, which in turn can help their performance on the golf course.

Its approach is based on creating a Pilates and physiotherapy environment that focuses on effective and safe exercise and treatment to assist you in achieving your goals as fast and effectively as possible. Its Pilates for sports conditioning programme can help to improve your sporting performance by providing muscle balance, core strength, correct posture, muscle flexibility and muscle efficiency. Both studios are equipped with Pilates and rehabilitation facilities such as dedicated private Pilates areas with all of the necessary equipment including the chair, trap table and barrel, reformer class areas, tower class areas and physiotherapy treatment rooms.

In 2005, the company Omnititan introduced the Phiten O2 into Singapore. It’s a Hyperbaric Air Therapy Chamber (HATC) for Hyperbaric Air Therapy and was first adopted by the Singapore national swimming team who took a Phiten O2 with them to two SEA games. How it works is that it takes the surrounding ambient air (that has only 20% of oxygen) from the environment, which then goes through the Phiten Air-filter at a compressor, and through air pressure the oxygen level inside the Chamber is at 25%. Benefits include fatigue relief, promotion of cell metabolism for recovery from injury, eyestrain reduction, better blood circulation, relief of hand and leg swelling and anti-aging. By setting the oxygen level deliberately at below 30% it means that anyone can use the Phiten O2 – there is no restriction on age – however if that were to increase then it would be deemed a medical device and medical certification would be required. An HATC (which is portable and easy to set up) was installed in the players’ locker room during the 2010 and 2011 Barclays Singapore Open (BSO), and was tried out by a number of European and Asian Tour players. The hard-type Phiten NEO O2 unit was recently acquired by the National Institute of Education for sports science research purposes. The Phiten O2 unit in the Recovery Lab at Marina Square is the soft-type (blue chamber). The first 20 to call Phiten Recovery Lab on 6338 5767 (address : Marina Square 6 Raffles Boulevard #03-338 - www.phitengolf.sg) will receive a Phiten Hyperbaric Air Therapy one hour session FREE and receive a Phiten Goodie Bag.

SIEM REAP TRIP (12TH TO 15TH DECEMBER 2013)
O
ur recent golf outing to Cambodia consisted of all the ingredients necessary for a really enjoyable trip — Great Golf, Great Fellowship, Great Sightseeing & Great Social Service. Yes, it was indeed four GREAT DAYS for 30 RCC members visiting the historical city of Siem Reap. There are a number of superb golf courses situated in and around Siem Reap, and we were fortunate enough to play three rounds of challenging golf at the Sir Nick Faldodesigned Angkor Golf Resort, Phokeethra Golf Course and Siem Reap Booyoung Country Club. On the second day, we also held a friendly competition based on blind partners using system 36 (combined stableford points). The deserving winners were: Champion – Cindy Tan / Tan Poh Kee Runner-Up – Teo Keow Seng / Polly Sim In the spirit of giving and sharing during this festive season, we visited an orphanage after our golf game on the second day of our trip. For the past 30 years, this centre (BFT) has been actively involved in rebuilding

Cambodia society and has an on-going child support centre housing 30 children. In addition, the centre also conducts English language lessons, leadership skills and so on. Collectively and spontaneously, the golfers raised more than USD$860 to buy groceries, household necessities and children’s goodies as our gift and contribution to this orphanage. It was certainly a worthy cause and memorable visit for all of us. On the third day, we took a break from golf and enjoyed a full day tour visiting three magnificent temples - the UNESCO World Heritage Site Angkor Wat, The Bayon and Ta Prohm, where Angelina Jolie filmed and starred in Tomb Raider. Our fourth ingredient — fellowship – flowed throughout the golfing break with many members making new ties and bonding with old friends. With this fruitful trip, all of us look forward to joining further RCC golfing holidays. Peter Tan Chairman, Lifestyle Committee

MAHJONG COMPETITION

M
ahjong dates back 4,000 years to a time when Chinese aristocrats were the only people playing the game, keeping the rules a secret from Chinese peasants. As a result, the game only became known nationwide when China became a republic in 1911. Now, the game has evolved into a very popular pastime which is generally played by four players. RCC’s second Mahjong competition, held on 9th November, proved to be a hit among our 16 participating members. The fee of $25 included a buffet brunch and high tea as well as cash vouchers for the winners. The Overall champion Julie Chua won by just $1 over Rosalind Chan. In the PK division, Esther Oh triumphed over Elvina Wong. All participants received a door gift (RCC ball marker) and there were eight lucky draw winners. The feedback was very positive and some members have requested to have this event on a more frequent basis.

A Word of Love
T
he club’s Stamford foyer holds a special place in the hearts of both Boo and Reg, as it was where they met on 22nd November 1988, and where their love for each other began. On 22nd November 2013, they celebrated their silver anniversary in the Stamford foyer. It was truly a joyous celebration with their beloved family and friends. We wish them the best of health and happiness for many years to come.
