Vice President PALM PROJECT SUBCOMMITTEE UPDATES
Raffles Country Club will like to organise a “retirement game” on the Palm Course before site work commences. Members are free to tee-off at any time and take photographs. More details to follow soon.
Mr Wong Toon Suan - Vice President The PPSC has been working intensively with our GCA, Nelson & Haworth Golf Architects, since its appointment in April. Substantial attention is on Stage 2, where concepts are translated into detailed design ready for tendering. Another key milestone is the appointment of JY Consultants Qualified Person who will also act as the Superintending officer of the contract. Our Project Manager, Steve Bruton will work closely with various stakeholders to ensure this fast-tracked project will progressively achieve the planned milestones. The display boards of the conceptual plans and hole layout were erected on 23rd May in the foyer lobby. A dialogue with 41 members followed a week later hosted by Neil Haworth, Partner of Nelson & Haworth Golf Architects on Stage 2 works. I am pleased to report during this period, GCA and its associates had completed the following Stage 2 works: • Irrigation design • Grassing plans
• Detailed grass plan • Sand-capping plans
• Earthworks plan • Cut and fill plans
• Concept drainage plans
RCC advertised on 6 June for the pre-qualification of the construction tenders, in a bid to ensure only tenderers with necessary expertise need apply for the project. The GC also approved PPSC’s proposed shortlisted tenders on 28 June. Tender documents will be released early July.
Raffles Country Club • Vol. 25 July - August 2014
PPSC has planned the following milestones: -- late July: closing of construction tender -- Aug: evaluation of tender and second dialogue session with members -- late Aug: award of the construction tender -- mid Sep: commencement of site work
2
One of the key decisions requiring inputs of both Golfing Committee and Finance Department will be whether construction will commence with all 18 holes or 9 holes by 9 holes. Interests of members, costs and the Club’s financial status would be carefully evaluated prior to execution. Raffles Country Club will like to organise a “retirement game” on the Palm Course before site work commences. Members are free to tee-off at any time and take photographs. More details to follow soon. Finally, I am pleased to announce Mr Lee Ek Tieng has agreed to be the Senior Advisor of PPSC. PPSC will be able to benefit from his vast experience and knowledge in overseeing the development of many courses at various clubs in Singapore.

Q
Golf
Winner Profile Judy Quek How did your love affair with golf start?
Q
A
friend introduced me to the game in 1989. I got hooked to it ever since.
Can you tell us more about your recent wins? t was a great achievement to win the Ladies Bogey with a gross score of 77. Breaking the 80 mark would be my next target!
What is your favourite/most effective swing?
A
I have my basic setup routine with a focus on my grip and alignment.
Q
Along the same line, what is your go-to club when everything is on the line?
Q
What is your pre-round warm up routine?
Q
What do you do to ensure improvement in your play?
A
A
I ensure both my body and mind is in its optimal condition, and most of all, staying confident!
My 9-wood is my favourite and “magic” wood. It always puts my ball back into play.
Q
What is your greatest personal golf memory? Which Golf pro inspires you and why?
Q
What was your most dramatic/memorable playoff?
A
A
For me, having to sink a downhill crucial putt to win during the inter-clubs league game was exhilarating.
It is my first hole-in-one achieved on 8-888 in Bintan Lagoon, IBF-Woodlands course. Tiger Woods inspires me. His focus, positive mental strength and determination to “survive” during adverse conditions are truly inspiring and admirable.
Q
What are your three most recent tournament highlights? Describe your most major win.
A
My yoga stretches in the morning and light stretching just before the game starts.
Q
Your philosophy on golf? Any other anecdotes to share?
A
Every hole is a new beginning and fresh opportunity. Never give up!
A
The recent highlights are the Ladies Flag and Bogey games, May Ladies medal and mine qualifying of the Rolex game, based on gross score. RCC's Ladies single handicappers are strong players and it's difficult to win with a gross score. There were only a couple of single handicappers who participated in the May medal, it was a lucky break for me to win and qualify for the Rolex game, based on gross score.

Nike Lunar Footwear
Lifestyle
Lighting Up The Fairways Perfect for summer’s longer days, warmer weather and extra hours on the golf course, Nike Golf has introduced two new footwear styles inspired by more than four decades of Nike’s deep roots in athletic shoe design. The Lunar Waverly has been designed to be as comfortable on and off the course. Partnering with the Nike Sports Research Lab, Nike Golf designers used pressure-mapping analysis to zero in on how the foot moves during the swing and determine the size, height, hardness and overall configuration of the waffle lugs. The footwear team brought that pressure mapping to life through visible color patterns on a traditional Nike waffle outsole reminiscent of the company’s very first footwear styles, featuring superior grip and traction within an iconic tread pattern. The Lunar Mont Royal features Lunarlon foam in the heel and modern no-sew technology in the midfoot, and also utilizes the traditional Nike waffle sole for incredible grip and control. The designers constructed the outsole with waffle tread rolling up around the toe and inner side of the foot to maintain traction through the swing as the foot pushes off the ground. Available in Singapore in a variety of colours – the Waverly is priced at $109 while the Mont Royal retails for $169.
Odyssey® Metal-X ™ Milled Putter If you need any help turning your putting into an art form, then try out this putter from Callaway Golf. The Metal-X Milled is the most technologically advanced milled putter on the market. It features Metal-X roll technology that’s chemically milled into the face, producing a truer and more consistent roll combined with crossbar technology and adjustable weighting that allow players to customize feel. The chemically milled oval depressions maximize the mechanical lock with the golf ball dimples to increase friction and impart proper launch, creating a more controlled and consistent roll. The putter also comes with three sets of customizable weights to fine tune your preferred head weight for 340g, 350g or 360g heads and allows players to customize feel based on different playing conditions including green speeds. The Stabilizing Crossbar is visible from the back which stiffens the face without adding much weight to stabilize sound and feel.
Check out these superb putters from one of the master craftsmen in the business. The new Scotty Cameron Select putters feature precision milled, highly refined shapes with tour-validated balance and stability. The new line includes three modern blade designs from Scotty’s tour-proven Newport family (Newport, Newport 2 and Newport 2.5) and two modern mid mallets (Fastback and Squareback) with innovative new crisscross sight lines for improved alignment. The new Scotty Cameron GoLo mallet putters feature an elegant rounded profile, with soft lines and necks for players that want to rid themselves of technical thoughts and produce a stroke with a natural flowing arc. Four models (GoLo 3, GoLo 5, GoLo S5, GoLo 7) with different size and neck configurations allow players to choose their preferred appearance and toe flow. Both versions use a deep-milled face to deliver tour-proven feel and soft sound. Select weights in the heel and toe are perfectly matched to the shaft length to provide balance and stability. Each model features striking new cosmetics, accented by a new Silver Mist finish with framed and double milled red-dot graphics and double beveled weights. They retail for $645 in Singapore.

Golf Course Design Part ii GOLF COURSE DESIGN PART II Golf Course Design Philosophy New is Old
Article by Mr Simon Yuen, Club President Golf fans who tuned in to watch the US Open for both the PGA and LPGA held at the Pinehurst No. 2(NC) USA may be shocked to see how the golf course looked like. Gone are the lush fairways. In its place are brownish grass at the sides. Hitting from this area is almost like hitting from a waste bunker. The thick rough is gone, replaced by scraggy native grass. They grow in clumps and unlucky is the golfer who finds his ball sitting behind a clump. It will be pure "tikam" how the ball will react when the player attempts to blast it out. Pinehurst No. 2 was a Donald Ross design and built in 1907 (The Golden Age). Its present look probably resembles the original. Michelle Wie, the eventual winner of the 2014 US Ladies Open had her ball stuck in one of the clumps on the 16th rough and had to take a penalty, dropping two strokes in that hole. Coore & Crenshaw recently redesigned to revive the original look. So the "Golden Age" of golf course design seems to make a comeback. I have little doubt Singapore golfers prefer the modern look, lush fairways along tree lined corridors, thick rough, in short the "avenue" look. Several factors appear to favour the golden age design's return.
Raffles Country Club • Vol. 25 July - August 2014
Firstly, the scarcity of water - it is likely to increase over the years. The desert courses in the USA only have lush fairways and greens, which are the only parts of the course where water is applied. The rough is no more than desert or scrub land. In the recent dry spell experienced in Singapore, only the greens were watered in some courses leaving the fairways to dry up.
16
Another factor is the ever increasing cost of maintaining golf courses. Every year several hundred golf courses were abandoned in the USA presumably due to prohibiting clubs' maintenance cost. Surveys in the USA revealed declining number of golfers in the country. Expected take-up from junior and lady golfers have not materialised. There is an apparent surfeit of golf clubs/courses courting golfing rounds and memberships. But coming back to the golden age golf course designs, we now take a look at some more of the design philosophies of different aspects of a golf course.
Golf
Golf Course Design Part ii A. The Putting Green
"Providence has been very kind in dowering St Andrews with plateau greens, and they are never easy to approach. A plateau usually demands of the golfer that a shot should be played; it will not allow him merely to toss his ball into the air with a lofting iron and the modest ambition that it may come down somewhere on the green.” - Bernard Darwin “On an interesting course an interesting game will be played; on a badly planned green the game will be dull.” - George Low “The contouring of greens places a premium on the placement of drives, but never is there the necessity of facing a prodigious carry of the sink or swim sort. It is only the knowledge that the next shot must be played with rifle accuracy that brings the realisation that the drive must be placed.” - A.W. Tillinghast “There is no hole that has been copied more frequently than the eleventh at St. Andrew, but I do not know any copy that has the charm, the interest or the thrills of the original. This is largely owing to the fact that the subtle slopes of the green and approach are overlooked and there are few, if any architects who have the courage to give the same marked tilt to the green, being too much afraid of hostile criticism. An architect fears the cry of freakishness, and the uproar of the press, if perchance, some popular competitor like Bobby Jones putts a little too strongly and his ball rushes down the steep slope into strath bunker, which is not an infrequent occurrence on this hole.” - Bobby Jones (on the 11th green in St. Andrew)
“Putting greens constructed with relation to the length and topography of the hole are the making of a real golf course.” - Donald Ross
B. Golf Design An Art? “Don’t be afraid to ask your architect questions, for if he is the true master of his craft he will not only welcome them but also discuss them.” - A W Tillinghast “A good golf course is like good music or good anything else: it is not unnecessarily a course which appeals the first time, but one which grows on the player the more frequently he visits it.” - Alister Mackenzie “These are my standards of laying out a golf course. Make each hole present a different problem. So arrange it that every stroke must be made with full concentration and attention necessary to good golf.” - Donald Ross “A first class architect attempts to give the impression that everything has been done by nature and nothing by himself, whereas a contractor tries to make as big a splash as possible and impress committees with the amount of labour and material he has put into the job.” - Alister Mackenzie “Anything stereotyped should be avoided on a golf course; all construction work should follow the irregular lines of nature. Any contractor who informs a committee that golf courses can be constructed on contract as they would build a clubhouse is either absolutely ignorant of golf course architecture or is trying to hoodwink the golfing public. It would be just as reasonable to expect an artist to estimate the amount he charges for a painting according to the quantities of paint and material he uses.” - Alister Mackenzie
Raffles Country Club • Vol. 25 July - August 2014
“Putting greens to a golf course are what faces are to portraits. The clothes the subject wears, the background, regardless of scenery or draperies – are simply accessories; the face tells the story and determines the character and quality of the portrait – whether it is good or bad. So it is in golf.” - C B Macdonald
17
Golf
Golf Course Design Part ii “There are few problems more difficult to solve them than that of what actually constitutes an ideal hole, but it is comparatively safe to say the ideal hole is one that affords the greatest pleasure to the greatest number, gives the fullest advantage for accurate play, stimulates players to improve their game, and which never becomes monotonous.” - Alister Mackenzie
“The true hazard should draw the play towards it, should invite the golfer to come as near as he dares to the fire without burning his fingers. The man who can afford to take risks is the man who should gain the advantage.” - John L. Low … one of the most important early figures in golf and a major influence on Golden Age Golf Architects
C. On hazards and bunkers
They should not be so severe as to discourage bold play. In placing hazards it is vital to keep the course navigable for the different. It is perfectly possible to do this, and yet to render it interesting and testing for the first-class player.” - C.H. Alison
“There are two ways of widening the gap between the good tee shot and a bad one. One is to inflict punishment upon the bad shot, to place its perpetrator in a bunker or in some other trouble which will demand the sacrifice of a stroke in recovering. The other, is to reward the good shot by making the second shot simpler in proportion to the excellence of the drive. In this way, upon the long well placed drive – possibly the one which has dared an impressive bunker – is conferred the greatest benefit; but shots of less excellence are still left with the opportunity to retrieve their fortune by bringing off an expectance fine second.” - Bobby Jones
Raffles Country Club • Vol. 25 July - August 2014
“Unfortunately, hazards have come to be associated with the idea of penalty … this has resulted in a system of golf design in which hazards are used to indicate a fixed idea of what correct play should be. To enforce this requires discipline. These hazards besides being informative of what correct play should be, become agents of the discipline necessary to enforce it and as discipline. If it is to effect obedience, must be definite and self-revealing, this system robs golf of all the mystery, romance and adventure Play becomes no more than an examination of skill. The golfer is not required to think but to obey.” - Max Behr
18
“Hazards should not be built with the idea of penalising bad play, but with the object of encouraging thoughtful golf and rewarding the player who possesses the ability to play a variety of strokes with each club.” - William Langford
“Bunkers”, if they be good bunkers, and bunkers of strong character, refuse to be disregarded and insist on asserting themselves; they do not mind being avoided, but they decline to be ignored. - John L. Low “Hazards should be visible. In general they should not penalize to the extent of more than one stroke, provided that the stroke out of it is properly played. “There is no such thing as a misplaced bunker. Regardless of where a bunker may be, it is the business of the player to avoid it.” - Donald Ross "A concealed bunker has no place on a golf course because when it is concealed, it does not register on the player’s mind as he is about to play the shot and thus loses its value. The best looking bunkers are those that are gonged out of faces or slopes, particularly when the slope faces the player. They are very much more effective in that they stand out like sentiments beckoning the player to come on or keep to the right or left.” - William Flynn
"Water hazards always lend welcome variety and test of skill to a course. They are pleasant breaks that can generally be made into charming beauty spots. But don’t allow your enthusiasm for them to run away with your good judgment. Limit the number of water hazards to three. Two might be better. The repeated loss of balls by those here for whom the hazard is difficult is apt to create dissatisfaction." - Donald Ross "The desirability or otherwise of having water hazards depends largely on their spectacular character and beauty. The amazing thrill of driving successfully over the ocean at the sixteenth hole at Cypress Point more than compensates for the loss of a dozen balls. Even absolute dubs suitable to this thrill." - Alister Mackenzie But “Church Pew” bunkers! (at Oakmont) “A shot poorly played (into the Church Pew bunker) should be irrevocably lost” - W.C. Fownes, Founder of Oakmont Country Club
“The Oakmont furrows seemed to say,” well, here you are in a bunker, and it doesn’t matter how good you are, or how much nerve you have. The only thing you can do now is blast.” Yet, a furrowed bunker, supposedly to reward a skillful player, absolutely precludes the use of a recovery shot requiring more than the application of a strong back and a willing heart! I should never care to argue for anything which would lessen the difficulty of the game, for its difficulty is its greatest charm. But when, in spite of vast improvement in the ball, in seeking to pressure the difficulty and to make scoring as hard as it was in the old days, we make the mistake of destroying the effect of skill and judgment in an important department, I cannot help protesting.” - Bobby Jones

Golf Course Maintenance Raffles Turf Department Article by Steve Bruton, RCC Course Superintendent
Summer Tee Plans 11th June, 2014 1st July is the start of our new turf budget for the year of 2014/2015. One of the main targets in the new budget is to improve the tee surfaces on the Lake Course. Here's our plan as follows: Strip the existing Zoysia, Serangoon and Cow grass off the surface to a depth of 10-15cm. Top off with sand and level to provide a smooth surface. Install a plastic barrier along the perimeter to prevent intrusion from the Serangoon grass surrounds. Add fertiliser amendments. Turf the tees with new Zoysia grass from our turf nursery agreement with TEHC International. The turf is no charge but the installation and leveling equals around S$105, 000 for the tee resurfacing.
Raffles Country Club • Vol. 25 July - August 2014
We will organise doing 3,800m2 of tee area every other month to keep tee space open and allow for recovery time between leveling and turfing.

Figure 1- Cow grass plants are propagated by seed. Tires, shoes, wind and water all help to transport the seeds.
It has been 14 years since the Lake Course was remodeled and the weed pressure of Serangoon and Cow grass has over run the course which typically happens in the tropical environments. I am amazed to hear that some members think it has happened only since I have started here last year and that is plain nonsense. Sentosa also has plenty of cow grass on their Serapong golf course as well. We all share this fate here in Singapore. Only a new course that is all Zoysia can fight a good fight with the proper herbicides for a while. Moving forward as best we can we will resurface the tees with new Zoysia, add the plastic barrier to fight encroachment and apply herbicides to fight cow grass seedlings, sedges, spurge and other weeds. The fairways are a mixture of 50/50 Serangoon and Zoysia. We will apply a pre emergent herbicide to reduce the cow grass seeds and also continue to dig out the existing cow grass plants to keep the fairways free of cow grass. The roughs will be whatever wins out between Serangoon, cow grass, etc‌ Fairway lies are preferred and rewarded over the errant shots that land in the rough.

Events River Safari River Safari…the young RCC generation have only one word to describe this experience…AWESOME! A memorable account from a young participant. It was early... way too early on a holiday morning. We arrived early for Jia Jia and Kia Kia's feeding time; our friends who visited River Safari tipped us off on their breakfast. No way were we going to miss watching them eat! Mum told us, we were going to see thousands of different animals and she was not telling tales! I really lost count of the animals after the first 30 minutes but thank goodness I did take note of the various mammals. Apart from the animals, it felt like we were travelling around the world because we started off at Mississippi River then to Congo River, between these 2 rivers, we saw the American beaver, the alligator snapping turtle and even got the chance to see the Mississippi paddle fish. Arriving at the Congo River, we saw for the first time ever, the African dwarf crocodile. The reason why I said it was like a trip around the world was because of the numerous species I saw from the Nile River to the Congo. Even the crocodiles’ species seem countless. Continuing on this river journey it was Murray River where we saw the Australian lung fish and Murray cod. From down under we came back to Asia visiting the Mekong River and the Yangtze River. Finally the great attraction, the Giant Panda Forest. We were in time to see Jia Jia and Kia Kia being fed and I bet you didn’t know how much they could eat? They could eat 20 kilos of bamboo daily, wow! The Giant Panda Forest was built specially to accommodate the adorable furry duo with some others like the red panda and golden pheasant. The well constructed dome was also controlled at a temperature of 18 o to 22 C.
A big thank you to RCC’s Lifestyle Subcommittee and Chairman for organising this trip for us, which was both educational, fun and an enjoyable way to kick start our June holidays!

As we moved on to our last spot which was the Wild Amazonia, it was so much fun as we got to learn more about the Spider Monkey, mane wolf and even the Golden Headed Lion Tamarin!

13th June – Glenmarie Golf & Country Club The second day was played in another championship course – venue of the EuroAsia Cup 2013 (RyderCup style tournament). The warm morning weather was ideal for our enthusiastic golfers who were all raring to pit their performance for the second day.

An extraordinary feat was achieved by Mr Patrick Kwek at Hole No. 17, Garden 2 Course. At 136m away from the target, he hit his shot with perfect judgement and was spot-on into the hole. A joyous celebration ensued during lunch as it was a lifetime-achievement spanning 28 years of Mr Kwek’s golfing experience to date. For his achievement, Mr Kwek received RM 2000 for the Hole-in-one prize and he kindly treated the group with good desserts, beer and wines. The date was also special for Mr James Tan, who turned 60 and the group celebrated his birthday with a nice cake during dinner. An elated James remarked, “I would like to thank Fandy and Mr. Yong for the recent trip to KL and Malacca. It was well organised and I really enjoyed the trip. Also, my sincere appreciation to both of you for the lovely cake.”

Another member, Mr. James Lim also wrote to Mr. Yong Kah Teck to comment on the well-organised trip. The note read, "Good morning Mr Yong. My wife, Kim, and myself would like to express our appreciation to you for organising such an enjoyable golf trip! Kim and I were particularly impressed with your clear and precise instructions and friendly and accommodative nature throughout the trip! In fact, one of my friends who attended this trip and numerous others before, told me that this was one of the best trips he's experienced. This can only be attributed to your excellent leadership of the group.
14th June – Ayer Keroh Country Club The trip culminated at the Ayer Keroh Country Club - one of the classic golf courses in Malacca. Golfers were challenged by the narrow fairways lined with matured trees and the traditional “cow-grass” that turfed the golf course. Many were delighted with the fine weather with overcast clouds providing the much-needed cooler temperature compared to the earlier two days. After the game, the last stop was at Pulai Springs where the group enjoyed a sumptuous spread before heading back to Singapore. It was indeed a memorable outing with an experience worth remembering. Till then, the next trip awaits…

Kim and I are glad to have come to know you and your wife through this trip. We certainly look forward to attending further golf trips that you may organise should the opportunity and timing permit. Once again, thank you, my friend!"

Good Morning Dennis, Saturday morning ( 10 May 2014 ), Whilst on Lake 18th hole, I felt some chest pain and difficulty in breathing at 09.10. I called the golfing counter and Masz pick ed up my call, told her to please request for an ambulance urgently and tell them it is severe chest pain. My flight mate Andy Ng immediately pick ed his ball and drove me back to the club house, where the staff were waiting. They made me comfortable and your golfi ng exec ( sorry I did not get the name) had a bottle of water and towel ready for me. Masz and Saadiah were also waiting there. Saadiah did rub some Minyak Kayak and they kept me in comfort whilst waiting for the arrival of the ambulan ce. The total care of the club staff including the guys from the buggy bag was really fantastic and caring, I cannot find words to describe it. Well, the ambulance arrived and took me to NUH and by 11 am I was already done and felt better after ballooning my blocked artery. It was a heart attack.
Staff of RCC , I cannot thank you enough for being there for me. Really appreciate your warmth. kind care and con cern.
Also the follow up by you, Dennis, and Club Captain David to check to see how I was. A BIG THANK YOU Warm Regards
