Welcome to another issue of Raffles Connection. This issue sadly contains our final messages from outgoing President Simon Yuen and Club Captain David Soh who will not be standing for re-election at the next AGM and instead will be handing over their roles to two other elected members. We wish them both our heartiest thanks for their guidance, leadership, expertise and support over the past four years. As the Palm Project gathers steam, we receive a timely update from our Vice President, Mr. Wong Toon Suan, on how the plans are progressing on page three. Our Raffles Charity Day weekend once again raised a large amount of money for schools and charitable organisations in the Jurong vicinity. Our Club Patron ESM Goh Chok Tong once again graced the event, and you can read all about the fun that was had in July on pages 10 and 11. A new segment, Member’s Profile, is in this issue and we highlight SC Pang, a longstanding member who works in a Property Development firm in Singapore. An avid golfer, Mr. Pang talks about his hole-in-ones, his game and his favourite golfers on pages 26 and 27. As always, there is lots of club news to catch up on which includes our very first Yoga class, the National Day competition and our popular quarterly fishing activity. If you’re after ideas on where to enjoy the Formula One this year over a drink and a meal, check out some establishments on page 21. And for those who enjoy a mooncake or two, check out a little bit of mooncake history on page 18 and where to buy some special creations on page 20. Hope to see you on the fairways soon – happy golfing!

of golf course leases will cost a lot. The exact amount is not known (and will not, in RCC’s case, be known for quite some time) but likely to be $1-2 million per year per 18-hole course. This means the Club will need to have at least $40-50 million before 2028, a hefty sum.

Mr Simon Yuen - President

A golf club will have to become more of a business if it is to survive financially. Management must become more commercially conscious. But this must not be at the expense of member’s enjoyment of the Club. After all Raffles is a Member Club.

lmost four years have passed since I took office as your elected President. Its time to hand the baton over to another member of your choice. Here are my thoughts on the golf club landscape. The principal assets of the Club, which are its golf courses and clubhouse facilities, require considerable funds for renewal and upgrading. Members’ subscriptions amount to less than half of the Club’s operating expenses. In the last year, all golf clubs have faced with the almost certainty that extension

Our golf courses are the Club’s principal revenue generators. Lake Course greens have been upgraded and its infrastructure (drainage and irrigation) remains in good health. It draws considerable interest from private tournament organisers even though we have carefully increased pricing. Palm Course will close in October for about two years. It will not generate any revenue during this period and the Club will have to carefully nurse its funds until such time as Palm reopens. Member’s levy ($3000 max) is expected to kick in by October 2014 after the construction tenders are awarded. Management will have to carefully calibrate the utilisation of Lake Course for two years, balancing the desires of its members to play and enjoy the course and the needs of the Club to host private tournaments to raise funds. I hope for members’ understanding and support for the next General Committee (GC) who will have to deal with this situation. Looking at the future, golf club membership will become more “elitist”; as less and less golfers feel that they can afford such a luxury. Monthly subscriptions will inexorably rise. Future GC will have to manage this situation if subscriptions are not to double. A golf club will have to become more of a business if it is to survive financially. Management must become more commercially conscious. But this must not be at the expense of member’s enjoyment of the Club. After all Raffles is a Member Club. Do not think I am a pessimist, we are a privileged group. We have a golf club that will soon give us 36 great golfing holes. Management and future GC, with the understanding of members, can make RCC reasonably-profitable and ready to meet future challenges. I take this opportunity to thank all GC and Subcommittee members who have put in their efforts for the benefit of RCC members. In particular I wish to thank Club Captain David Soh. We have spent many hours debating on how the Club is to move forward. The discussions were robust, serious (sometimes heated and sometimes lighthearted) but never acrimonious. We learnt from each other for the betterment of the Club. Thank You for giving me the opportunity to serve.

- Vice President

TifEagle will be used at the new greens, this is similar to the new grass used at the renovated greens at the Lake Course. As for the fairways, the hardy and well proven Zoysia will be used. Together with well-designed sand capping and fairway shaping, the new Palm should have a welldrained golf course just like the Lake Course.

Club News

T

he Palm Project enters its critical path in the month of July / August 2014. The Nominated Supplier Contract, NSC, for sand was advertised on 4th July 2014 in the Straits Times. Upon the tender closure on 21st July, Raffles Country Club (RCC) received three valid offers from three companies. The evaluation is in progress. On 4th July, RCC also issued tender documents to three short listed contractors recommended by the PPSC through a prequalification exercise, approved by GC during the meeting in June 2014. The construction tender was closed on 4th August and many offers were received based on preferred renovation phasing i.e. whether closing of 18 holes at one go and open the new 9 holes after 10 months, or renovate 9holes by 9holes. This needs to be evaluated carefully taking into consideration both golfing revenue and members’ expectations of availability of playing rounds. The evaluation is in progress. The second Meet-the-Members session was held on 22 August 2014, where Mr Neil Haworth presented the 3D fly-by animation for the new Palm Course. This animation is also played at Golf Reception to give you a preview of how the new Palm Course will look like. On a separate note, we wish to inform members TifEagle will be used at the new greens while we work with Nelson & Haworth Golf Architects. This is similar to the new grass used at the renovated greens at the Lake Course. As for the fairways, the hardy and well proven Zoysia will be used. Together with well-designed sand capping and fairway shaping, the new Palm should have a welldrained golf course just like the Lake Course.

Captain's MESSAGE

T

he Annual General Meeting to be held on 19 September 2014 prompts this potentially last message from me as Captain of Raffles Country Club. After four wonderful years, I am pleased to announce the newly-renovated Lake Course has not only looked better than before, both members and guests have expressed their happiness and newfound enjoyment in the Lake Course. We have also received more bookings, not to mention compliments on the well-maintained course. Another notable achievement for our Lake Course, is our club’s hosting of the Mercedes Trophy Country Final competition last June. It is where the best players selected from individual clubs vie for the place to compete in the Mercedes Trophy Asian Final held in Australia. That was also the gateway to more private bookings; enhancing our Club’s name as a result.

Raffles Charity Day

R

affles Country Club (RCC) took on another big challenge for the annual event – raising the bar equivalent to some $126,000 for Raffles Charity Day 2014. This is in spite of the grim economy outlook for 2014. Nevertheless, the Club welcomed over 600 people over the two days.

Raffles Country Club • Vol. 26 September - October 2014

The day started with two shotgun tee-offs at both Palm and Lake Course. Local celebrities such as Zheng Geping and Hong Huifang, Christopher Lee and Calvin Soh were spotted taking their swings at the courses for the event. Sponsors were also generous with their tokens. Mr Ong Chuan Huat scored a Hole-in-One sponsored by Swiss watchmaker, Breitling.

2014 Our Club Patron, ESM Goh Chok Tong who has a soft spot for RCC graced the event with his presence on the first day. Renowned artist, Victor Ang, took the stage to demonstrate his art of calligraphy using tissue papers offered by the audience. His calligraphy of the Chinese word ĺ–„ (means virtue), endorsed by ESM Goh Chok Tong, fetched an auction price of SGD$9999/-. Taiwanese supermodel, Shatina Chen made an appearance as a Special Guest on the second evening at the Gala.

hile the nation celebrated its 49th year of independence, Raffles Country Club did the celebration its own way. The National Day Game, held on 9 August 2014, had golfers dressed in colours bearing that of the country’s flag. Buggies were also decorated with our flags to honour the trials and tribulations our beloved Singapore braving to become what it is today.

Events The heavens threatened to open and the Club was not inclined to have rain on its parade. Armed with the chilli-and bawang setup, we were fortunate to have successfully warded off bad weather. Sunny skies with sporadic clouds to provide shade to all the patriotic participants, an added bonus! Attractive prizes were offered for the merit category as well as the nearest the pin contest. After the game, players were treated to a sumptuous buffet spread at the Lakefront café. The end-of-the event was culminated with a twist – a longest drive competition in the golf simulator.

Raffles Country Club • Vol. 26 September - October 2014

Many strong contenders hit their drives beyond 260 metres. However, our Vice-Captain, Loh K C was crowned winner with a drive of about 260m and the ball on the fairways. The ladies saw a close battle between two players. After a tough fight, a tie emanated between Ms Cheong and Ms Mari Tse at 200m shots – sharing the honour.

Mooncakes and Their Darkside

T

he world shook when Reuters reported about gold-encrusted mooncakes stuffed with shark’s fin sparking suspicion about corruption. It seemed the celebrated pastry has been a tool to get into the good books of officials. The art of bribery appears to have elevated to a whole new level when there were jewellery-box style packaging – which allowed cash, liquor and other extravagant gifts to be hidden with the pastries. Shaun Rein, Managing Director of China Market Research Group, has even commented: “What has taken a deep dive is the high-end mooncakes more typically associated with corruption.” An anti-corruption drive spearheaded by President Xi Jinping has resulted in the pricier pastries suffering a loss of popularity, while the traditional lotusseed and sesame paste filling types remained sellable. However, in Shanxi province, gold-filled variations carried a price tag of over $1000/-, as reported in the local dailies. The state media added China Merchants Bank Co Ltd marketed gold and silver mooncakes. However, the bank’s spokesperson rubbished the claim.

Raffles Country Club • Vol. 26 September - October 2014

Even the People’s Daily wrote in a commentary “It's normal to exchange gifts but too much reciprocity has become a form of extravagance.” The infamous opinion has gotten the authorities to impose income tax on mooncakes received, which has seen reluctance of officials to accept such gifts.

18

The Communist Party's Central Commission for Discipline Inspection on Friday urged people to report cases of party members and government or state-owned enterprise officials spending public funds on gifts, banquets, travel and luxury goods during the Mid-Autumn Festival and the National Day holiday, which falls in early October.

While China regularly announces anti-corruption campaigns, this one appears to have more bite than usual, although experts say only deep and difficult political reforms will make a real difference. While the Republic battles the stigma of ongoing corruption, the biggest quirk is mooncakes’ entry into the black market! Companies have adopted the practice of issuing employees coupons for expensive mooncakes in lieu of the pastries themselves. Those who dislike the dessert will sometimes offer the coupons to traders who linger outside hotels or shopping malls. As a result, traders collect a bulk of these coupons and sell it back to manufacturers, apart from selling as a discounted rate to those customers who enjoy mooncakes. You are free to imagine the shelf lives of these pastries.

A piece of

L

egend has it mooncakes were used as to bring about a revolution. In the Yuan dynasty (AD 1280-1368, the Mongolians conquered the Han Chinese. However, one Chinese folk tale names Liu Fu Tong, a Han Chinese rebel leader, devised a plan to topple the Mongolians in a bid to end the oppressive Yuan dynasty. He sought permission from Mongolian leaders to present gifts to friends as a symbolic gesture to honour the longevity of the Mongolian Emperor.

history

Raffles Country Club • Vol. 26 September - October 2014

In round mooncakes, the gifts contained pieces of paper with the date of the rebellion – none other than the fifteenth night of the eighth lunar month. Eventually, the Han Chinese succeeded in overthrowing the Mongolians.

Royal Plaza on Scotts The culinary team at Carousel has created other life-sized race cars using chocolate, bread, macarons and pasta in previous years, and this year they are creating a life-sized race car. Tying in with recycling initiatives at the hotel, the culinary team is using the shells from seafood consumed at Carousel to create a race car this year, and the types of shells collected include those of scallops, clams, mussels and oysters. In celebration of SG50, the hotel has also teamed up with Community Chest to raise funds for its beneficiaries. A Community Chest donation box will be placed beside the car to encourage public to shell out for charity. Under the Care & Share movement, these donations will be matched dollar-for-dollar. The completed masterpiece will be on display until 21 September at Royal Plaza on Scotts’ newly renovated façade. Guests also stand to win a 2D1N weekend stay in an Executive Suite with Club benefits and dinner for two at Carousel in the hotel’s online contest. Fundamentals in the making of a perfect golfer

T

his started our members thinking when we first introduced this to Raffles Country Club. Publicity was done, we were however worried only ladies would attend. A week later, members started signing up for this course.

It proved us wrong; awareness in the right places and people reading it was key. In fact, awareness is the secret of yoga.In order to experience yoga’s benefits, some of our male members signed up for this course because they wanted to achieve more in golf through yoga. As we know, many athletes practise yoga to achieve greater awareness and connection to self and good health. Posture, breathing, control of subtle forces, visualisations, depth of focus were the elements of what golfers had wanted to achieve. Yoga proved its existence to be the key to open all these doors and our members saw the health element above all as a start to better golfing.

Raffles Country Club • Vol. 26 September - October 2014

With a handful of members only to start the class in the first season, Yoga is back this time around to help members not only achieve in golf. We are proud to share this priceless gift with both our female and male members who have signed up for this yoga course, we hope it remains to inspire more RCC members to achieve goals simply practising awareness through yoga.

C Pang, Director for Property Development in a Singapore-based company which was developing the legendary Kuala Lumpur Golf and Country Club, had his first game in Kuala Lumpur in the 90s, at the encouragement of his superior to take up golf. His skills (today) includes only one coaching session which lasted an hour with an instructor, the rest is self-taught. The humble man cites his Hole-in-One successes to sheer luck. Recalling his Hole-in-One achievement, he quips, “I had a good start… watching my ball land on the front left of the green, roll over the centre hump after teeing off. However the pin wasn’t within eyeshot and the ball actually disappeared! Dismissing the first hunch as a potential Hole-in-One, we parked the buggy and all of us went hunting for it. “After a fruitless search on and behind the greens, my partner finally acknowledged the suspicion and said I might have scored a Hole-in-One. He went to look into the pin and there it was!” In totality, this second Hole-in-One scored on Palm Hole no. 17, is nowhere near his maiden achievement back in 2003. The ball now serves as a keepsake on his desk. Raffles Country Club honoured his inaugural achievement in Hole no. 14 with a plaque, as he fondly recalls the joy 11 years ago in the Lake Course. What got Pang excited was watching his ball land near the pin. The heavens were on his side when they watched the ball made its way into the hole itself.

Today, Pang golfs with his friends on Sundays. However, even the leisure golfer has some bad days. He takes every game in his stride now. “Today I can hit balls… Those years I had more air shots – which were frustrating. If I hit beyond 100, I just move on. I am able to laugh at myself. If I can go below 90, I will be a happy man for a few days,” he chuckles.

Club News

Profile Friendships mean a lot to Pang, which is also another reason behind his safe relationship with bets. He relates his group doesn’t play beyond $20 and the winner often pays it forward with drinks or food – fostering the spirit of good sportsmanship. Naming Phil Mickelson as one of this favourite golfers, Pang admires the Golf Great for his fearlessness. Apart from being humble and spending time with his fans, another attribute Pang names of Mickelson is the latter’s famous flop shots. Unknown to the golfing community, Pang happens to be a former mountain-climber – naming Kota Kinabalu as a mountain “not that tough to climb” back in 2005. His parting shot was “only if you put your mind to it…”

Raffles Country Club • Vol. 26 September - October 2014

In spite of his skills, Pang is not a competitive golfer – adding he is the last of his group of two friends to score the second Hole-in-One. Like any golfer’s initial start to the game, there were bumpy rides such as not having any par throughout the game. He however recalls a nerve-wrecking moment of teeing off before a crowd (with the bosses) in Kuantan in the first flights. The Achilles’ heel was when his then Director hollered, “Pang! Relax!” That well-intentioned instruction literally sent the ball into the water.

s you look down the freshly cut fairway towards the flag, you might spot someone within eyeshot. She is a lady with a buggy equipped with hand tools almost as many as the number of golf clubs in your bag. Our new Earthkeeper, Grass Grower or Turf Manicurist, Christine Chungbivat, has clocked almost two decades in Singapore’s landscape scene.

28

Trained in horticulture, the Thai native has worked for many golf courses in the country; equipped with full understanding of golf culture and golfers’ expectations. Christine spent her early career years dealing in landscape and tree management. Later on in her career path, opportunities have opened doors for her to learn about turf grass management for the golf course. Since then, Christine has been a regular in courses and hands-on experience in managing turf in the courses.
