As well as RCC’s monthly medal games and other competitions, a special golf event was held to honour RCC’s Founding President and Chairman Lee Ek Tieng for his 26 years of service to the club. You can catch up on the news and pictures on pages 10 and 11. As we wind down to Christmas, it’s time to start thinking about golfing gifts for our loved ones. Check out the latest golf equipment and apparel on pages 20 and 21. As always, there are pages of club news and other events to enjoy such as our Quarterly Fishing and don’t forget to get in early and book your slot in the club’s New Year’s Eve extravaganza, ‘An Onyx Affair’. You can welcome in 2015 at a very reasonable price of $45 for members and $55 for guests at the Stamford Suite. It just leaves me now to wish you all a wonderful festive season and a happy and healthy 2015 with plenty of good golfing scores! See you on the fairways!

President's MESSAGE A New Beginning! Dr Daniel Goh - President
F
irst, I would like to register a vote of thanks to the former General Committee and Subcommittee members for their services to the Club.
The last AGM witnessed a hotly contested election for the General Committee. This is a positive sign for the Club - it showed that more members were prepared to step forward to volunteer their service resulting in more choice for members to select. With the election behind us, I hope all members can show unity in moving forward. As our Club is a Members’ Club, I hope members will join us in our effort to build a better Club. Please be generous with your feedback so that we can do the right thing for you. Food and services at the Golfers’ Terrace is one of our primary concerns. We (Tony Jiang (VP), Dr KK Tan and I) have met with the management of our caterer on 25 September 2014. The parties agreed to work closely together to improve operations at the Golfers’ Terrace to bring forth improvements. The Palm Course is another key concern. The letter from URA dated 28th August 2014 states: “…We wish to inform you that the proposal (Palm redevelopment) falls within an area under study, hence the proposal has to be deferred until 30th June 2015”. It is clear we must delay the Palm Course redevelopment until URA completes their study. Our take is part of our land could be affected by the high speed rail project scheduled for completion in 2020. It was regrettable approval was not sought from relevant authorities prior to embarking on such a major project. We shall now focus on efforts to bring the much-neglected Palm Course back to a playable standard. At the AGM, members wanted to know the spending on the Palm Course redevelopment project. I assure you an audit will be performed. You will be advised about the figures once they are established.

Thank you for your support and I look forward to working with you to build a better Club.

Captain's MESSAGE Patrick Low - Captain
A
llow me to express my thanks for your faith in me as Captain of Raffles Country Club. It’s my personal mission to make the Club successful - with the help of various Subcommittees addressing the different issues. I welcome your feedback how we can improve the Club at any time. I am also pleased to inform the Subcommittees are formed and in operation. It is heartening to see many members offering their knowledge and expertise to serve, for the best. The staff in their various capacities, work tirelessly throughout the year to manage this wonderful facility. I am willing to bet I am not alone in appreciating their hard work and dedication. Sponsors too play a very important role for which we are grateful. We sincerely hope with their continued support, we will continue to support charities while enjoying this superb golf club. Our disappointing ranking last year was a combination of both unfortunate timing and the condition of both Courses. We were debating whether or not to renovate the Palm Course, and the Lake Course just concluded its renovation last April. That translates to my priority of restoring our Palm Course to a playable condition and bringing Lake Course back to a Top 10 ranking. We all need to be mindful of the rules and etiquette of golf. We ask everyone to please show respect for the courses and repair divots and pitch marks along the way. My assurance to you is improvement of the Palm Course will be carried out progressively – utilising the budget from Course Maintenance. No monies will be spent in haste. Primary works in Course restoration include Irrigation, pipe leaks and improvement of both tee boxes and bunkers. There are a few golf competitions in the pipeline and I extend my best wishes to various team Captains and players representing us throughout the games. I hope at the end of term, we have some silverware to show for our efforts.
Raffles Country Club • Vol. 27 November - December 2014
I also wish my fellow Committee members an enjoyable and productive term.

General Manager

arm greetings.
I am excited and privileged to have this opportunity to be a part and a team member of this magnificent Raffles Country Club. I truly hope my recent past and professional credentials in the hospitality industry with the Hyatt Regency Waikoloa, known also as “The Most Spectacular Resort on Earth”, the Hilton Waikiki Prince Kuhio Hotel, the Shanghai Grasslands Golf Club, Orchid Country Club and Aranda Country Club will be able to add value and synergise with the leadership and direction of the newly-elected Club President, Dr. Daniel Goh, General Committee members and the various Subcommittees to spearhead and position RCC as a Premier Golf Club in Singapore. RCC is a fabulous Golf Club strategically located in a scenic and picture-perfect backdrop of Sungei Tengah. Surrounded by a nature reserve and lush geographic locale with flourishing habitat of migrating wildlife that depicts the serenity and natural beauty unmatched by others in the industry, we should all be reminded constantly and be proud of this gift of nature. The upcoming MRT Line; the exciting redevelopment of Jurong Lake District; and the High-Speed Rail project will inevitably transform both the physical and psychological buy-in preference and business landscape of RCC. Truly a class by itself and with so much more potential yet to be tapped and exploited for members’ indulgence.
Raffles Country Club • Vol. 27 November - December 2014
My vision and aspirations from the on-set of my appointment as the Club GM is to enhance the overall vibrancy, patronage and utilisation of Club facilities and services; strengthening the communication and relationship with and amongst members; review of member services experience, improving service standards through customer centric training, and nurturing a Culture of Care to lift the overall morale of Club personnel with emphasis on Team-Spirit to “Do Well” and “To Do Together”. And to establish a clearly defined and purpose-driven Key Thrusts and motivation to better serve our esteemed members and stakeholders.

I would like to share two meaningful quotes that are close to my heart with everyone at RCC:-
“Not all of us can do great things. But we can do many small things with great love”; and “I can do things you cannot, you can do things I cannot; together we can do great things.”
Mother Teresa See you at the Club soon!

In honour of Mr Lee Ek Tieng’s 26 years of voluntary service to Raffles Country Club as both Founding President and Chairman, a competition called “Lee Ek Tieng Golf 2014” took place on 7 September 2014. The shotgun commenced at 1pm, complemented by fine weather. Two teams were headed by Mr Simon Yuen (President 2012/2013) and Mr Lee Ek Tieng respectively. The tournament was played using 2-ball scramble format on Stableford points. Both teams put up a fierce fight for the glory. Founding President’s team won against President’s team counting the top 20 scores from each side. MST Golf offered a $20,000 Yamaha Golf Set for a Holein-One on every Par 3 Hole. Unfortunately, no one won the prize. However, the camaraderie and appreciation of the crowd towards Mr. Lee’s contribution is invaluable.

Club News
Winner's Profile Overcoming Yourself Raffles Connection (RC) gets up close and personal with Chloe Wong (CW), Ladies Club Championship winner, who shares with us how you can be your own enemy. RC: Tell us more about this Club Championship. Was it a practice session for you? Or was it a get-together with your pals? CW: I have played competitive golf since I was eight and a half years old. Although it was a little nerve wracking for me initially, the pressure got numb as time went by. Considering the fact that I am only human, the pressure has never been completely subdued; I have to admit this tournament did give me some jitters. I was not nervous about the fact that I had to outdo everyone, but rather because I knew I had to outdo myself. This fact holds true for all the tournaments I participate in. In the end, the Club Championships for me was a stepping stone - one towards a better me.
RC: Did you set any goals for yourself outside of this competition. What were they? CW: The only goal I had was to beat myself. Like they say, you are your own worst enemy.
RC: Moving to announcing your name as winner, where were your first thoughts?
Raffles Country Club • Vol. 27 November - December 2014
CW: Truth be told, I didn't really know what to think. Was I surprised? Definitely. Was I happy? Sure. Was I pleased with my result? ... Not really. Even though I was happy, there was a part of me which I was displeased with. I know that I could have done better than what I scored. Isn't the point of life trying to do better than before?
14
RC: What is your biggest takeaway from this competition? CW: Whenever you feel like giving up, just remember that there are a lot of people you still have to prove wrong.
RC: Whom would you like to thank for your victory? CW: My parents mainly. They have always supported me. Credit though is also given to my sister and the RCC golf captains (ST and David)!!
The only goal I had was to beat myself. Like they say, you are your own worst enemy ~

Club News
Words of a proud father, Alex Wong Chloe has put in a lot of hard work into her game. Chloe will be the first one to know whether she has performed to the best of her ability so I don't need to state the obvious. Win or lose. Good or bad. My wife, Mari, and I will be there to support her. It is not always about winning or losing but how she plays the game - with dignity and respect. As such, I am not too worried as I know that she has put in the work. The results will speak for themselves. A lot of consideration should be given to Mari. She has sacrificed a lot to be a full-time mother and to ensure that both Chloe and Naomi are outstanding human beings and ready to contribute to a better future (as well for her continuous support in the girls' development and preparation - from driving them to practice and watching over their nutrition). Special thanks to ST and David and the rest of the RCC team for their support.

IRRIGATION WATER SOURCE and REPAIR WORKS Christine Chungbhivat,
Course Superintendent (Lake Course) / Horticulturist
T
urfgrass requires good soils and adequate levels of sunlight, nutrients, and water to endure a wide range of environmental extremes and withstand traffic from golfers. Of these requirements, water may be the most challenging to provide because it must be distributed frequently and uniformly into the soil for uptake by the turfgrass root system. Add the fact that water comprises 80 to 85 percent of the weight of a grass plant this makes water vital to a turfgrass survival and well-being. Almost all golf courses have an irrigation system and a source of water to help keep the turfgrass healthy and produce a good playing surface. Lake and Palm course are equipped with the irrigation system. During re-modelling of Lake Course back in year 2000 a modern irrigation system and new irrigation pipelines were installed. There are minimal leaks and malfunctions from the irrigation system in Lake course.
Raffles Country Club • Vol. 27 November - December 2014
On the contrary, Palm course is still using the aged old irrigation system installed 27 years ago. The unfortunate delay in the Palm Project until the review from URA is completed around June 2015 has led us to revisit the nagging irrigation leaks on the Palm Course. Currently we have 12 mainline pipe and 20 lateral line leaks on the Palm. It really is just a fragile 27 years old pipe network that is cracking under years of earth settling, wear and tear on a high-pressure irrigation system in the tropics. . It was decided to forge ahead with the repair of the mainline pipes first, followed by the lateral lines. Depending on the weather conditions and the location of the leaking point the work will take several months to complete. There will be at times inconvenient piles of earth and holes to contend with during this process. All areas will be properly marked and protected for safety during the process. We cannot guarantee that the repair of these current leaking pipes will not cause a domino effect of more leaks due to the fragile cracking nature of the pipe, but we will strive to contain each new leak as it comes up. Please understand the complexity of this repair work as we strive to keep the Palm Course going until we receive permission in the future to upgrade the irrigation system within the scope of a proper renovation project.
18
We started the repair work on 1st Oct 2014, and to date we have repaired six mainlines and 3 lateral lines on various locations. We also discover new leaks along the way. Nevertheless, we will forge ahead and continue with the irrigation repair work.
Golf RCC irrigation water source is from our own ponds. The ponds collect water from rainfall and runoffs from the golf course both surface and underground. During the dry period, should the water level drop below safety level, we pump in raw water from PUB’s Tengeh reservoir. We need to maintain a safe level of water in our irrigation ponds to stabilize the banks and to ensure sufficient water is stored for golf course irrigation needs. Raw water pumped in from the reservoir is charged to the club by PUB under the category of RAW WATER (not treated, non-potable) at a much lower rate than tap water. practise water conservation effort in RCC and improve irrigation efficiency by; Reducing water applications to the rough and fairways. More focus on hand watering isolated dry spots. Raising and leveling low sprinklers. Replacing worn sprinkler nozzles. Programming the system for multiple short cycles of irrigation (cycle/ soak) to prevent irrigation runoff. Regular application of soil wetting agents to improve water penetration. Use of portable moisture sensors and in-ground moisture sensing devices.

Christmas Stocking As we start counting the shopping days until Christmas Day, it’s time to think about what we can buy for the golfer in our lives. Justine Moss does the rounds and comes up some new products on the market in time for the festive season. Mizuno New MP Irons
These new irons feature Mizuno’s Ti Muscle technology and are the combination of the very best of previous Mizuno MP-59 and MP-64 models, for example the profile, trajectory control and feel of the MP-64 with the peripheral weighting only possible with a Ti insert. Forged directly inside the 1025E framework is a re-engineered Titanium Muscle insert, which maintains thickness behind impact for solid feel, while allowing weight to be shifted to the perimeter to provide ‘full cavity’ forgiveness. Available at Royal Sporting House.
Callaway Apex Muscleback Irons (2-PW)
These soft, 1020 Carbon steel irons are intended for elite golfers, with a Tour-inspired shape and style in a premium forged design. They’re also packed with gameenhancing technologies like the high performance wide-spaced grooves, which deliver more control and consistent spin out of a variety of playing conditions. An Optimised Sole Camber enables excellent turf interaction from any lie for more playability than you’d expect from a muscleback.

Fillers Titleist 915 Drivers, Fairways and Hybrids
This new family’s tag line is Distance Without Compromise – they have been designed using the patented Active Recoil Channel (ACR) TM technology to produce lower spin and higher speed for more distance – without sacrificing forgiveness. And they are fantastic to use, definitely delivering more distance. The proprietary ACR actively flexes at impact and recoils to launch the ball off the face with higher speed and lower spin. On the driver, the Radial Speed Face, a high-speed forged face insert with a radially thinner perimeter in the heel and toe, works with the ACR to increase ball speed on off-center hits; and on all three clubs a precise, high-MOI design with a low and deep center of gravity location delivers stability and forgiveness by preserving off-center ball speed for more distance.
Cleveland 588® RTXTM 2.0 Wedges
These have been designed with sharper grooves and a new micromilled ROTEX face pattern, to take spin and control to the next level. They are available in a traditional muscle-back head shape for the better player, as well as a more forgiving cavity-back design for the improving wedge player. With two head designs and three distinct grind options, the new RTX 2.0 wedge family provides golfers with a comprehensive system that makes it easier than ever to build a wedge set that maximizes performance based on turf conditions, playing preference and skill level. They are currently available in multiple lofts, bounces and finishes, and come standard with a True Temper Dynamic Gold shaft.
Following the successful introduction of D.N.A men’s shoe model earlier this year, the Women’s D.N.A model is now available. Features include ChromeSkin™ leather by Pittards and a SnugFit tongue - advanced design shapes to the foot with MicroVent™ technology for breathability. Another feature is the 3D FoamCollar™, the NitroThin™ TPU outsole for lightweight stability and performance and the Xtra-thick FTF™ FitBed® which delivers industry-leading in-shoe comfort and stability.

Beyond the season Ode to families we’ve neglected all year It may seem clichéd to think Christmas is an occasion, some call it an opportunity to spend time with loved ones. Maybe it’s your chance to impress that special someone with whom you have a relationship to be built or repaired. Just what is Christmas to you? As this article is written, I came to know the death of a dear friend who passed away – leaving behind a newborn. While Christmas will never be the same for the surviving family, you might just be that gift someone out there is wishing for. You could look at all the gifts and promotions vying for your attention for that dollar. You might just be trying to decide between two items for a recipient whom you owe that gift to. What if you are that gift? Is there someone out there waiting for your smile? Beneath the façade of parties and drinks, may lie hearts that yearn for acceptance and acknowledgement. Parents who are overwhelmed with work tend to use Christmas as an opportunity to redeem themselves for their absence throughout the year. But would that gift mean that message in your heart you’ve been trying to convey?
Raffles Country Club • Vol. 27 November - December 2014
Start with greetings… How do you convey the season’s greetings? A text message will do the trick you say? Why it’s the most common method of communication today – so common it has overtaken a decent conversation, or a mere “hello!” Is it easier to speak through a machine? Have we all become machines to begin with? Conditioned by today’s fast paces and unimaginable expectations.
26
On the other hand, what do you want for Christmas? Do gadgets and apparel still mean anything to you? Mothers with many kids wish for a literal silent night. Solebreadwinners wish for a day of peace and tranquility; away from the the hectic days. You may have a family you barely see in a week because of professional commitments. What do you have to offer this Christmas? The gift of time? The gift of your presence? Or the gift of understanding? Is this Christmas all about you? Or all about your giving? Add that extra meaning to your holidays, just primarily with your presence. As for the gifts... will their (recipients) wishes be your (or your pocket's) command?

Collection of Christmas Poems
They gave each of us a number All of my family were there Our neighbors and our friends All were crammed together We walked until we stumbled Then crawled into cold rough wagons Elbow to elbow we traveled for miles But at least we were together Yeah we are going inside now Just follow those in front and hurry Hold onto your brother's hand We don't want to be separated Screams of pain and putrid smells We merge on towards the unknown Crowd crushing us before and behind Nowhere else to go but together
Christmas is filled with special joys, And the very best of all Is contemplating those dear to us, And the memories we recall. We often think at Christmas time Of people, affectionately, And we realize how blessed we are To have you in our family.
What Christmas is to me by Marlena ‘Tis the time to hug, And stay warm and snug. Time to ice skate over the frozen lake, And for the sugar cookies to bake. It is Christmas, Occasional fog or mist. Children get snow days, and go out to play on sleighs. On Christmas day it is fun, there are just clouds and no sun. You open your presents, which your family sent. The kids just rip the wrapping, and can’t stop laughing. Kids get toys, specially made for girls or boys. Teens get phones and games, and call their siblings lame. The kids go out to make angels in the snow, Running through the cold air that blows. No one wants the day to end, So some decide to share gifts or lend. The families take off their bootlaces, And get warm by the fireplace. Christmas is when your family comes, And when they all love.
