EDITOR’S NOTE Welcome to this ‘new’ issue of Raffles Connection. By new, I’m referring to the new design layout which we have adopted for this and subsequent issues. Aside from the new design revitalising Raffles Connection, it strongly reflects RCC’s endeavours to reinvent and enhance the Club’s branding as a premium Club. We welcome feedback from members regarding the new design. And speaking of new, as the theme for the Club’s Annual Report is ‘25 Sliver Years’, the Club will embark

In this bumper edition, catch up on all the club news in the early pages – this includes results from the recent EOGM which was held to vote on Palm’s redevelopment, upcoming club competitions and two new reciprocal partnerships - the superb Avondale Golf Club in Sydney, Australia and Shanghai Sun Island International Club. On page 5, read about another successful annual Raffles Day Charity Weekend which raised $225,000 for eight charities and 12 schools in the Jurong area. In 25 years of playing golf, I have yet to record a holein-one, but on the first day of the Charity weekend, Carrie Choy aced Lake’s par-3 16th to win a Mercedes Benz E-class E200 Elegance – congratulations Carrie!

CAPTAIN’S MESSAGE We are pleased to share with you that your strong support has helped us raised more than $225,000 for distribution to eight charitable organizations and 12 schools in the Jurong area.

happy golfing!

G

ood day everyone! The Raffles Charity Day 2013 has been yet another wonderful and joyful event of the year for all of us here at the club. On behalf of the organizing committee and the club, I would like to take this opportunity to thank fellow sponsors, friends and members again for their tireless support. We are pleased to share with you that your strong support has helped us raised more than $225,000 for distribution to eight charitable organizations and 12 schools in the Jurong area. Despite buzzing with works and preparations for the RCD 2013, we still managed to host a string of notable events held at the club namely SGA Inter-Club League, monthly medals, the recently concluded Club Championship and the annual SGA InterClub League.

Besides that, we have hosted three Interclub friendly matches with Kuala Lumpur Golf & Country Club, Glenmarie Golf & Country Club and Kelab Golf Negara Subang. Positive feedbacks has been ringing in our ears with compliments from our reciprocal friends that we gave them the warmest welcome reception, making them feel at their home. Everyone enjoyed themselves to the food and golfing. Our new golf course superintendent, Steve Burton joined us in June. In a very short two months he did a splendid job in maintaining as well as improving the green speed on both our Lake and Palm courses. More details of the the maintenance programs will be published in the coming months. Recently, we have been receiving many more cases of complaints of dangerous play, slow play and differences of opinion. Remember, we are at the golf course to enjoy ourselves; a little patience goes a long way. We conduct quarterly Golf Rules & Etiquette seminars for new members and encourage and welcome members to participate. The next seminar will be held on 7 Sept 2013 (Saturday) at 10.00am in the Raffles Lounge. Thank you members for your continued support and patience. I wish you good health and happiness and hopefully we will have plenty of glorious weather to make golf good and most enjoyable.

MESSAGE

GENERAL COMMITEE’S MESSAGE Palm Course: What’s next after the EOGM?

T

1. We should wait till end 2013 when SLA releases more information on the future use or lease extension of RCC’s land.

There have been some rumors that the maintenance of the Palm Course had been intentionally neglected. The GC wishes to inform members that this is far from the truth. If members visit www.rafflesturf. com, a website set up by our Course Superintendent, Steve, members will see in detail, the extent of work being carried out; not just on the Palm Course but also at the Lake course.

2. No other options were being presented to members and thus a lack of information or transparency on how the GC had arrived at the decision to move the motion in spite of two rounds of meet the members’ session.

The GC and its Sub-Committees would like to assure members that we will continue to work in the best interest of the Club and will endeavor to provide significant information that will affect the club’s future in a more timely manner.

The GC will endeavor to engage SLA late November or in December to get more information on the future land use and will inform members promptly in due course.

General Committee

he majority of members who attended the EOGM on Wednesday, 14th of August voted not to proceed with the proposed Palm Course Redevelopment. The main reasons as we understand were due to the following:

The PRSC is already working on getting a more accurate costing estimate regarding the option of renovating or revamping the Palm Course along with the current RTJ design with a complete renewal of drainage and irrigation system plus remedial works on all the water bodies. The cost to be incurred to conduct the investigative work will be ascertained and budget approval during the AGM will be sought to proceed.

Grain Control

By Steve Burton, Golf Course Superintendent.

W

e recently aerified the Lake Course Greens adding necessary soil amendments like dolomite lime to raise the soil pH, micro nutrients along with vertical slicing to help cut the excessive horizontal growing leaves which are often called by the general term “Leaf Grain”. The best performing golf greens are always the ones with most of their leaf blades growing upright, not horizontal, or with the least amount of “grain”.

SMALL DETAILS 06 07

Before Dead End Path by 10 Palm Tee After-Potted Plants to Block View

When I first arrived at Raffles in early June I found the greens to have a limited root system and excessive leaf grain. Soil tests revealed a very low pH of 4.3 and high nitrogen content which was greatly contributing to the poor root system. We have been addressing this issue by using less nitrogen and soil amendments based on our soil test and now have much stronger roots 8 weeks later. These stronger roots can now support the grass plant to withstand the aerification, brushing and slicing tasks to promote more upright growth of the leaf blades. We are on our way to better putting surfaces with reduced foot scuffing in the future. Continued slicing and brushing will help to cut the Bermuda stolens thus triggering new growth that will promote a denser and tighter putting surface.

Zoysia Turf Nursery Renovation Our old turf nursery contract will expire this 1st September and we will start a new program to renovate and establish 1.5 hectares of pure Zoysia turf that can produce up to 6 hectares annually to help us resurface tees, repair bunker faces and even start to address the fairway contamination of Seragoon and Cow grass.

CALLAWAY FT OPTIFORCE DRIVERS 04

Currently in 2013 Open Championship winner Phil Mickelson’s bag, this Roger Cleveland designed wedge features a 5V groove pattern – the 39% larger grooves provide 25% more spin out of the rough. In addition, the Increased surface roughness and laser milled micro grooves provide more clubface-to-golf ball friction for higher spin out of all lies and from all distances. The wedges are forged from 1020 carbon steel for soft feel and the chrome produces a smoky, muted look that helps reduce glare.

These superb clubs contain new and systematically designed technologies to help increase a golfer’s clubhead speed, ball speed and overall distance. One is aerodynamic efficiency, and the driver, based on its shape and construction, is among the fastest and most aerodynamically efficient driver that Callaway has ever brought to market. It also has 23% less drag than a conventionally shaped driver. Also contributing to advances in clubhead speed is the overall configuration of the driver, including the use of lightweight Forged Composite™ in the crown and two stock shaft offerings that can enhance a golfer’s ability to deliver the club to the ball faster. The driver features an Advanced OptiFit® Hosel that allows players to adjust the driver’s loft 1-degree down or 1- or 2-degrees up that helps golfers adjust their launch angle and amount of backspin. Finally, the Speed Frame Face Technology distributes stress across the titanium face for a larger, more consistent sweet spot and increased ball speed.

They also come with a one-year waterproof warranty. The EVA Midsole provides lightweight cushioning underfoot, while the PulsarTM Cleats by Softspikes® are the #1 selling cleat in golf and the overwhelming choice of touring professionals worldwide. The new Futura X is a high MOI, modern mallet design with advanced perimeter weighting that provides exceptional stability and forgiveness with solid feel. It’s the direct result of Cameron’s extensive work with Titleist Brand Ambassador Adam Scott, who used a prototype version of the putter in winning the 2013 Masters Tournament. Scott, who has been using Cameron putters for more than a decade, calls Futura X “the most stable putter I have ever played.” Precision milled from high grade 6061 aluminum, the unique Futura X design combines a rear balance bar with deep heel-toe weights plus perimeter weighting under the face. The resulting deep CG provides stability throughout the stroke, while the perimeter weighting adds forgiveness and solid feel. Pricing - $645.

This new offering is an absolute beauty from TaylorMade, and current PGA professionals who are enjoying its accuracy and distance include 2013 US Open winner Justin Rose and Darren Clarke. The SLDR is built to help you hit longer and straighter drives by promoting a high launch angle, lower spinrate and faster ball speed. Its CG location is both low and forward, due in large part to the large, 20-gram sliding weight on the sole. That promotes a dramatic leap in distance. In addition to the low-forward CG benefits, the SLDR weight also represents a complete reinvention of movable weight, making it more effective and easier to use. Movable weight shifts the clubhead’s CG horizontally toward either the heel, to promote a draw, or toward the toe, to promote a fade. SLDR’s sliding weight allows you to shift the CG far enough to promote a side-to-side trajectory change of up to 30 yards.

Golfers will be thrilled with these new irons as they provide high speed with improved playability and shot control. Engineered with a deep centre of gravity (CG) position for a higher moment of inertia (MOI); they aim to deliver increased stability and playability versus a traditional long iron while providing enhanced trajectory and spin control versus a hybrid. First introduced on the PGA Tour late last year, the 712U is already the most played utility iron model on the PGA Tour through the first 14 events of the 2013 season. The models can currently be found in the bags of tour pros like Adam Scott (2-iron), Tim Clark (4-iron) and Geoff Ogilvy (2-iron) – players who prefer a utility iron to a hybrid as an alternative to traditional long irons. Offered in 2-iron (18 degrees), 3-iron (21) and 4-iron (24) lofts, 712U utility irons are available by custom order only. Pricing S$408 for steel shaft and S$449 for graphite shaft.

WELCOME NEW STAFF

Terence Thia

Elaine Yeo

Finance Manager

Facilities Manager

Marketing Manager

Having worked in different industries, ranging from newsprint manufacturing, commodity trading to shipping, this is my first foray into the service and hospitality sector. And to take over from my illustrious predecessor Ms Woo Lee Choo, who had an outstanding career with Raffles Country Club, will certainly not be an easy act. I do, however, hope to bring my experience wherever appropriate to the club. I certainly look forward to working with my new colleagues and, in the process, to collectively serve the members better.

My past experiences include Facilities and Project Management for Shopping Centres, Hospitals, Hotels and Data Centres. Some projects I was involved in were the Asian Games Complex in Doha, Suntec City Maintenance, Beaufort Hotel, Spring Singapore, AT & T / Lucent Singapore, Goldhill Square, M & E Consultants and Compaq Asia. Joining Raffles Country Club will be another interesting journey for me. My past two years working in Thailand (2005), having also played golf in Thailand, have given me a greater understanding of the club, the course and how the game is played here in Singapore.

A dynamic, creative and self-motivated marketing specialist, Elaine has more than 8 years of consumer marketing experience in the fast paced retail industry. With a Bachelor of Arts degree in Mass Communications from Oklahoma City University and extensive experience in branding and marketing communications; sales; advertising and promotions; public relations; events management and customer relationship management, she has delivered breakthrough results for her previous employers; namely Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts (NAFA), Capitaland and Jurong Point. Through her tenure with Singapore Airlines as a flight attendant, Elaine has developed a passion for hospitality and pride herself in the relentless pursuit of exceptional customer service. With a flair for networking and events management, she enjoys meeting people, cultivating relationships and producing high quality and distinctive experiential events. In addition to achieving incremental profits for the club, Elaine will also work towards generating positive publicity and elevating the brand equity of Raffles Country Club.

CLUB NEWS

Letters of Compliment Hi Adam,

Hi

Thanks for your acknowledgement. I work in a big Corporate setting and they say the kind of culture and people that drive a team is a reflection of the Leadership that steers it. Your Club is a perfect example of one. Everyone from Masz to the bag drop attendants, restaurant staff, even among your maintenance crew really extended their welcome and made us feel at home.

I dined at Raffles Country Club on 12th Jul and had a lovely lunch. After making my payment, I left without realising I left my credit card on the table.

We don’t have to convey to you to keep up the Premium Customer Service because it’s aready in all of you! Certainly looking forward to our next visit given the opportunity.

At dinner, I reached out and realised my credit card was missing. I panicked and called Citibank and was told that a kind gentleman by the name of Henry from Raffles Country Club called to cancel my credit card on my behalf. I would like to extend my appreciation to Henry as he represents the professionalism of Raffles Country Club. On my next visit, I will thank Henry personally.

Hope the haze disappears in Singapore. Keep Well.

Once again, thank you. An experience I choose to remember.

Cheers, Lester
