EDITOR’S NOTE Dear members Welcome to this edition of Raffles Connection. After months of deliberating whether Palm Course should get a facelift or not, on 15th February an Extraordinary General Meeting was
held at RCC for members to approve a budget plus contingency amount to restore the course. A total of 62.4% voted for the motion. Read about the club’s plans on page 2 and 3 in the President and Vice President’s message. Let’s not forget Lake Course which is also going through some upgrading – in particular its bunkers. Pages 12 and 13 have the latest updates. RCC continues to leap ahead with signing reciprocal agreements with overseas clubs for members to enjoy – on page 9, the outline on the reciprocal clubs usage pattern and on page 7 read about the latest signing in China and also some upcoming club competition dates to put in your diary.
HIGHLIGHTS
As part of the club’s efforts to continually improve facilities and services for members, an online golf booking system is now in place to facilitate organizing your tee times. Page 8 has all the details. This time of year is traditionally when major golf brands unleash their latest equipment and apparel into the market. If you’re after the latest clubs or some stylish shoes, check out pages 20 and 21. As always, there is a smorgasbord of offerings at the Golfer’s Terrace and the Albatross Lounge which are outlined in this issue, along with all the other regular write-ups. I hope you enjoy this issue and look forward to seeing you at RCC! Justine Moss

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
I
would like to congratulate members, who at the EOGM on 15th Feb 2014, voted to renovate the Palm Course. It was a bold and almost prescient decision, coming a day before the Government’s announcement on Golf Club’s land leases in Singapore. With the decision to renovate Palm, members have spoken. They have also decided to walk the talk. Members will contribute not more than $3000 for the Club’s future. This is almost insignificant, compared with what members of several other golf clubs have to be prepared to pay for the extension of their leases. With Lake Course returfed and targeted to open on 1st May 2014, the conditions are all present for a REBIRTH of Raffles Country Club. It will now be up to our Vice President, Wong Toon Suan and his Sub-Committee to bring home the bacon by giving members the best golf course the Palm can be within the framework of their mandate obtained at the EOGM. I, for one, will be looking forward to what Palm will be like when the Sub-Committee makes its choice. Even after one bold step forward, RCC will still have to take several more steps to lay a solid foundation for the future. It must increase course utilization and build up its financial reserves in the expectation that the Government will allow us to extend our lease. The General Committee has approved the creation of a new class of corporate membership. This is a sort of “bearer” membership which allows the bearer to use the Club’s golfing and other facilities. Subscription for this class of membership will be set higher. It does not carry voting rights nor does it give privileges to family members.
2
RAFFLES COUNTRY CLUB
Only a small number of such memberships will be created. They will only be offered to existing corporate members, either as an additional corporate membership or which they can convert their existing membership to. If this initiative is successful, the Club hopes to raise between $2-3 million for only a little increase in the number of members. It will also be expected to increase the number of golf rounds and bring in significant guests fees. Another positive situation is the secondary market price of RCC transferable membership. On the date of the EOGM, our members were offering their membership for sale at the market price of around $35,000. In the eight days since, there has been a buoyant increase in the price expectation, with the asking price for individual membership spiking to as high as $48,000! I had mentioned the word “optimism” in last issues’ President’s Message. It certainly looks that way; judging from the events that have developed since then. Come September, the Treasurer, Captain and several GC Members as well as I will complete our maximum terms of office and have to step down. We hope that the events that are happening at the Club are for the good and that our successors will have a reasonable foundation to build on and move the Club ahead for the benefit of all RCC Members. Simon Yuen President

VICE PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE A great step forward for the development of Raffles Country Club
I
n years to come, Raffles Country Club members will remember that 15 February 2014 was indeed an important milestone for the Club’s development history: the majority members who attended the EOGM voted for the renovation and modernization of the 25 years’ old Palm Course. This marks the beginning of an important task for the Subcommittee who will look after the project and the General Committee who will provide overall direction during the process. My main aim is to stir the development of the project with an aim to award the construction tender in six months’ time i.e. August 2014 and put in place a well structured and efficient project management. It is going to be a real challenge, but not an impossible one. Throughout our history, the General Committees and the Management have been able to deliver projects effectively, for example the re-development of Lake Course some 13 years ago, with the support and understanding of the members. For this coming project, I urge the members to continue to provide support and understanding during the project implementation phase. I would like to keep the members of the SubCommittee small, but would like to form a task force and focus group from time to time to seek feedback and also contribution from members. For example, while preparing the construction tender,
I intend to seek expert views from members who have vast experience in the construction industry. My aim is to establish a ‘smart’ construction tender to make the best use of our existing resources and capitalize on some of the current market price trends. We will also work closely with the Golfing Subcommittee to minimize the disruption of golfing activities. I believe all members wish for a memorable course that will re-establish Raffles Country Club as a premier club in Singapore’s golfing fraternity. Some of the design criteria that the Subcommittee would like to specify, but not limited to are: • Memorability, a true experience for both amateurs and professionals • Good sustainability and maintenance efficiency • Variety and shot values providing a great golfing experience for all level of players • Better use of existing resources, retaining the majority of the flora and fauna where possible My approach would be to run this as a fast track project but not sacrificing any quality and fun so our members will be able to enjoy a new Palm Course in 24 months time. I will provide updates from time to time via the Raffles Weekly and Raffles Connection. Wong Toon Suan Vice-President Chairman of Palm Project Sub-Committee

GOLF
DANGEROUS PLAY Dangerous Play On The Golf Course Golf is usually a safe sport. – as long as a few basic, common-sense rules of safety are followed. When those rules are ignored, injuries will occur. Golf involves the swinging of golf clubs, which propels golf balls at high speeds. If you happen to get in the way of either the clubs or the balls, you’re in danger. You could be placing yourself in danger, too, if you do not respect the power of the sun, the danger of lightning, or your body’s need for the right kind of fluids on warm days. Here are some guidelines that can help ensure your safety, and that of those around you on the golf course.
Keep Track of Players Around You
Yell Fore, Cover Up When You Hear It
When a golf club is in your hands and you are preparing to swing, it is your responsibility to make sure your playing partners are a safe distance away from you. It’s not too difficult, after all, to keep track of where everyone is when your group is no more than four golfers.
Even if you follow the advice above, there will surely come times when you hit your drive farther than you expected, or a hook or slice comes out of nowhere and takes your ball toward an adjoining fairway. Or when you play your stroke believing the fairway ahead is clear ... only to notice players up ahead who had been obscured by a hill or trees.
Never swing a golf club when another golfer is close to you. That’s the most important thing to remember. And be a little extra cautious on practice swings, when it’s easy for golfers to let their guard down. Extra vigilance is also needed when younger golfers are part of your group. Also, look ahead of you, and to the left and right of the area where you are aiming your shot. Don’t hit your ball until you are confident that any golfers up ahead are out of your range.
Heads Up While it’s the responsibility of every golfer to be sure it is safe for them to take their stroke, you can’t always rely on every golfer to do just that. So even when it’s not your turn to hit, stay aware of your surroundings. Be especially careful if you have to venture into an adjoining fairway to retrieve or play an errant shot, or if you are close to an adjoining fairway and golfers on that hole are hitting toward you. Always keep a safe distance from golfers in your own group when they are preparing to play a stroke. Do not venture past the player hitting their shot.
10
RAFFLES COUNTRY CLUB
You know what to do: Yell “Fore!” as loud as you can. That is the international word of warning in golf. It lets golfers playing near you know that an errant golf ball might be heading their way, and they need to take cover. And what should you do when you hear “fore!” being yelled in your direction? For goodness sake, do not stand up, crane your neck, and try to spot the ball! You’re just making yourself a bigger target. Instead, cover up. Crouch behind your golf bag, get behind a tree, hide behind the cart, cover your head with your arms. Make yourself a smaller target, and protect your head.
GOLF
Never Hit Into the Group Ahead of Yours
Protect Yourself from the Sun
This should go without saying, shouldn’t it? What we’re talking about are those occasions when a very slow group is ahead of yours, and frustration takes over. It happens to all of us. Someone in your group gets angry, and next thing you know, they’re teeing up a ball and hitting into the slow-playing group ahead.
A typical round of golf means four hours of exposure to the harsh effects of the sun. More on a slow day, or on a day when you play more than 18 holes. More when you factor in time on the practice putting green or driving range.
If you’re ever tempted to do this ... don’t. It’s very rare, but golfers have been killed after being struck by golf balls. Injuries do occur. Instead of taking aim at someone in anger, take a deep breath. Remind yourself that you’re playing golf, a great game, and enjoy the camaraderie with your buddies. If you spot a course marshal, flag him down and ask if he can help speed up play. Don’t take the risk of hurting someone ahead. What do you do if you accidentally hit up on the group ahead? Please drive the buggy up to the group in front and apologise. This is basic etiquette which will avoid confrontations with the group in front, which later could result in disciplinary action being taken against you. Please make sure the group in front of you is out of range before hitting.
Drive Safely Most golf carts come with a safety label. Read it, and follow the directions. Driving a golf cart along the course’s fairways and cart paths isn’t a difficult thing to do. But read and observe all safety rules. Don’t hang your feet out of the cart while it’s in motion; don’t go off-roading over bumpy terrain; don’t drive at full speed around curves or down steep hills. Don’t let small children drive the cart. And watch out for other golf carts at points where paths cross.
In short, golfers have a large exposure to the potentially dangerous effects of the sun. Protect your skin by always using a strong sunscreen. Also, wear a wide-brimmed cap to keep the sun off your face. Better yet, get yourself a straw hat or other full-brimmed hat that will also help keep the sun off the back of your neck.
Beware of Lightning Lightning is a killer, and during a thunderstorm golfers carrying metal clubs in their hands while on exposed land are at great risk. If there is lightning anywhere around the golf course, or thunderstorms approaching the siren will blow. Do not try to finish the rest of the hole you are playing. Head immediately for cover. Head for the clubhouse or a designated lightning shelter (found on the courses). If you are caught out on the course, do not seek cover under trees. Trees are lightning rods. When the siren blows and it has not started to rain yet, you must get off the course. Don’t wait for rain to seek shelter.
Add Fluids ...the Right Kind of Fluids If you’re playing golf under the sun on a hot day, you’ll be sweating off a lot of body fluids. Even if the sun is nowhere to be seen, and it’s a cool day, you’ll be working up a thirst. Quench that thirst the right way. Drink plenty of water. If you buy a beverage, make it a sports drink such as Gatorade. Of course, there are those golfers who play simply as an excuse to drink beer. It’s important to avoid beer (at least until after the round) on hot days. Because alcohol, along with the sun, also dehydrates the human body. And we all know about alcohol’s disorienting effect on people. The odds of an accident occurring go way up with each beer.

LAKE COURSE BUNKER SHAPE UPGRADING
N
eil Haworth of N&H Golf Design visited Raffles Country Club on January 22-23 to review the progress of the greens and to adjust the shape of the bunker edges. Based on his paint markings, we will adjust the bunker edges and add new bunker liner material to prevent soil erosion into the sand and to reduce the labor required to push back up the sand after heavy rains. He also recommended filling in several bunkers to help with the speed of play, visual aesthetics and to reduce maintenance costs on holes 14, 15 & 17. We chose the bunker liner material, SandMat which is the same material used on number 16 Lake bunker because it has performed well over the last 2 years since it was installed. This bunker improvement work will take place over the next 6-8 weeks.

EXTRAORDINARY GENERAL MEETING
03
04

O
n Saturday 15 February, RCC held an Extraordinary General Meeting (EOGM) and invited members to vote and approve a budget of $16 million, plus an additional $2 million contingency amount, not exceeding $3,000 per member for the purpose of Restoring and Modernizing Palm Course. The meeting commenced at 7:30pm and after the validation by RCC’s General Manager, Mr Adam Robertson that there was a quorum present, he informed the members that they were welcome to ask questions. President Mr Simon Yuen then invited committee member Mr Ho Chye Hoi to clarify how the General Committee interprets the two resolutions which had been laid out, after which there was a Q&A session followed by voting from the members. RCC is delighted to announce that the members voted to approve the budget to renovate the Palm Course. The total number of valid votes cast during the EOGM, which was held in the Stamford Suite, was 242, with 62.4% (151) voting for the motion, and 37.6% (91) against.

Herons in RCC
O
ne of the appealing things about having a round of golf here – aside from being surrounded by gorgeous flora and fauna indigenous to Singapore and the region – is spotting various species of wildlife. It is not uncommon to spot the odd otter, crocodile, squirrel, iguana, monkey or snake in addition to a whole offering of wonderful birdlife such as herons, eagles, White-breasted Waterhen and Yellow Bittern and many rare species such as brahminy kite, black-naped oriole and Asian paradise flycatcher. In fact, most of the courses here can be an avid bird watcher and nature lover’s delight. In RCC, many herons can be seen on both Lake and Palm courses.
Yet, while this reduced number of herons may alarm some bird enthusiasts and environmentalists, the report quoted ornithologist and nature educator Ms. Wang Luan Keng as saying that the numbers are not as bad as they look, as the birds’ regular feeding grounds had been underwater due to various high tides. However, she did mention that the decrease of the black-crowned night herons – 51 this year from 194 in 2003 – could be as a result of disturbed nesting sites.
In a report, however, from last December’s Straits Times (Sunday Times), a recent count by the National Parks Board’s Heron Watch sector showed that there are currently fewer herons in Singapore than before. The four common species – the popular grey herons, purple herons (which can be found in mudflats and mangrove swamps), black-crowned night herons, and striated herons - have decreased by three-quarters, and in 19 of the 57 survey sites, no herons were seen at all. According to the report, the data from the National Parks Board's Heron Watch came from 185 volunteers who helped with the bird count expedition on 31 August. The findings were presented at Sungei Buloh Wetland Reserve's 20th anniversary celebrations late last year.

01 Adizero Golf Footwear
02 DryJoys Casual
Adidas Golf recently released their next generation of adizero golf footwear in Singapore. It’s a visually appealing design that tips the scales at less than 10 ounces, 10% lighter than the adizero Tour. It delivers more stability than ever before in the lightest cleated performance golf shoe the company has ever created. While traditional golf shoe construction requires the stitching of multiple layers, adidas golf designers pushed the limits of engineering to create a new, ultra-light one-piece fused upper that bonds together five layers to deliver a consistent glove-like fit on the foot. To further reduce weight while increasing stability, a lighter and thinner seven-cleat performance outsole (formerly 10 in the adizero Tour) was developed which measures 20% wider than adizero Tour. For women, adidas Golf has designed the adizero Tour II, utilizing many of the same design and fabrication elements as the adizero one in a streamlined, six-spike configuration with thintech lowprofile technology to improve traction and stability. The adizero one is currently available in a total of three colourways in Singapore for the Spring/Summer 2014 season at a recommended retail price of S$259. The women’s adizero Tour II is available in two colourways in Singapore for the Spring/ Summer 2014 season at a recommended retail price of S$179.
FootJoy have introduced a new performance spikeless golf shoe category: DryJoys Casual™. A natural extension of the storied DryJoys® footwear line, DryJoys Casual shoes feature super-soft, premium full grain waterproof leather and lightweight TPU traction elements that provide great on-course traction and the versatility of off-course wear. A new proprietary polymer outsole material called Fine-Tuned Foam™ (FTF) was developed for the DryJoys Casual outsole unit. FTF is 10% lighter than conventional EVA Foams providing enhanced cushioning and shock absorption for added comfort. The shoes are available in a number of colour options in Singapore in March 2014 and the SRP is $260.
03 New D.N.A. Footwear FootJoy’s D.N.A. (DryJoys Next Advancement) features the most comprehensive feature package ever delivered by FootJoy. The D.N.A. footwear features new, cutting-edge componentry and construction methodology and a number of key features and benefits. These include a 3D FoamCollar™ for comfort, SnugFit Tongue for fit, NitroThin™ TPU Outsole for stability, Xtra-Thick FTF™ FitBed® for cushioning and ChromoSkin™ Leather System by Pittards which is supple, lightweight, thin-yet-durable and completely waterproof. Available in March 2014 in Singapore, the MSRP is $310 for the regular D.N.A shoes and $340 for BOA.

04 Nike VRS Covert 2.0 Driver
06 Titleist Vokey Milled SM5 Wedges
Bigger, faster and longer than last year’s VRS Covert drivers – the world’s first to feature conforming High Speed Cavity Back technology – the new VRS Covert 2.0 drivers deliver more forgiving distance, faster ball speed and simple, intuitive customization to meet the swing needs of every athlete. The high-Speed Cavity Back technology redistributes weight to the heel and toe allowing for increased distance and more stability across the face of the driver. It features two additional proprietary technologies: A larger, re-engineered NexCOR face for increased ball speed and distance, and FlexLoft adjustability, which allows athletes to easily customize loft and face angle positions for 15 drivers in one. Available in Singapore in February 2014, the Nike VRS Covert 2.0 Tour Driver is priced at $800 while the Nike VRS Covert 2.0 Driver is $650.
Precisely designed and manufactured using proprietary Spin Milled technology, Vokey SM5 wedges provide a distinct performance advantage through new, deeper TX3 grooves, tour-driven shapes and the industry’s most extensive range of bounce and grind options. The new TX3 grooves, with 7% larger groove volume and two performance configurations, deliver maximum spin by channeling away grass and sand for improved contact between the ball and groove edge. The Vokey SM5 wedges are available in 21 different loft/ bounce/grind combinations and six tourinspired sole grinds, appropriately slotted into low, mid and high bounce categories to fit all swing types, shot-making styles and short game conditions. Available in March 2014 in Singapore the MSRP is $225. 06
05 Nike Lunar Control In addition to Lunarlon foam cushioning, the Nike Lunar Control also features Nike Flywire, another proprietary technology, which wraps from the midfoot to the heel for targeted support and lightweight structure. Available in vibrant colors such as Venom Green, Military Blue and Challenge Red, the shoes’ Nike Power Platform stabilizes the foot to provide better balance, smoother weight transfer and more control at impact. Power Transfer Zone technology works in conjunction with the Power Platform to allow for constant ground contact and a smooth transfer of power throughout the swing. Available at $309.

SWING INTO A COLOURFUL 2014
A
fter a bumper 2013, many thought that New Year’s Eve was going to be quiet at Raffles Country Club; however the Lifestyle Sub Committee (LSC) 2013/14 had other ideas and felt they could not finish the year without a bang! Since the motto for the LSC was ‘Going Places With Lifestyle 2013!’... what better way than to get the members together and make that perfect Swing Into A Colourful 2014! The theme suggested colours and we were inspired to create an evening that is as colourful as possible for the party-goers. The Stamford Suite was jazzed up in a very Japanese Pop Art A La Mode, and even the Foyer was decorated with several different hues of colours. A group of young working professionals from the Pentecostal Church Of Christ 4th Watch entertained everyone for 45 minutes during the lively pre-dinner cocktail, belting Christmas carols in beautiful unison accompanied by an acoustic guitar. All 14 of them touched every string of the members’ hearts with their lovely singing and honourable efforts in raising money for the Philippines’ Haiyan Relief Fund. The guests were suitably impressed with the venue’s vibrant colours which really set the scene for a night of great partying and enjoyment. Emcee Bernard Lau opened the evening by thanking the Lifestyle Sub Committee Members, especially Ms. Denise Seow who had invited him back again to RCC.

RAFFLES COUNTRY CLUB
Many also praised Mr. Yong Kah Teck for his meticulous choice of music for the evening’s dance and general ambience. Everyone was in for a real treat with the energetic and funny emcee who won the crowd with great cheer and entertaining jokes. The laughter and jovial mood was infectious and the delectable spread served by RCC’s very own Shanshui Restaurant in addition to the lucky draw prizes kept many smiling. The main act of the evening started at 8.00 pm when Singapore’s The Main Wayang entertained members and their guests with an hour long performance of songs and sing-a-longs. This prompted many to get in the mood to get up and dance with Lifestyle Sub Committee Chairman, Mr Peter Tan, Ms Denise Seow and Mr Yong Kah Teck leading the throng to the dance floor where they boogied the night away until the stroke of midnight! While members exchanged New Year greetings with one another, the doors opened to the Foyer for yet another sumptuous buffet of midnight porridge to kick start a nourishing 2014. Your Lifestyle Sub Committee 2014 Chairman, Peter Tan, Family Values - Ms. Denise Seow, RCC’s Fred Astaire - Mr.Yong Kah Teck, Keep Fit Guru - Ms. Cheong Yoke Keng & Travel Ambassadress Ms. Elvina Wong - wishes all our members a Happy, Healthy and Happening 2014!

QUARTERLY FISHING
O
ne of the reasons why RCC's quarterly fishing event is always a success is that it's a therapeutic way to break away from the daily grind and relax totally. It's also a time to catch up and bond with friends while soaking in the beautiful scenery in and around RCC's golf course. At our last event, which took place at Lake Course, a total of 98 cast their lines at hole numbers 2, 9 and 18. Everyone went home happy with their catch of the day in hand. It really was the perfect day for a perfect catch. For those who participated, we thank you for your support and hope to see you again at our next fishing event!
