EDITOR’S NOTE Dear Members Welcome to another bumper issue of Raffles Connection. In this edition, find out what a lucky group of members got up to in South Africa! They share their pictures and experiences on pages 24 and 25 – everything from great golf to

sumptuous food and wine. Also, last month another member contingent visited the beautiful island of Hainan and played at the Meishi International Golf Club in addition RCC’s newly signed reciprocal club, BFA Golf Club. Most of you will know that the Lake Course has now reopened, after extensive work on the course’s greens, bunkers, tee boxes and fairways. The result is simply superb with many members expressing their delight in the course’s retweaking by Steve Bruton and his team. Hearty congratulations to them for an excellent job! Read all about the new additions on pages 20 and 21. As usual, there are pages of useful club information for you to digest,

Vice President’s Message A Giant Step towards becoming a Premier Golf Club in Singapore

T

he General Committee has approved (during the meeting on 26 April) the appointment of Nelson & Haworth Golf Course Architect as the Golf Course Architect (GCA) for the Palm Project. This marked an important milestone after two months’ of hard works by the Palm Project Subcommittee (PPSC) and the management.

Although we have imposed a condition that the new Palm has to be redesigned based on current developed area and corridor, this requirement did not limit Nelson & Haworth from putting forward innovative designs that would transform Palm into a great course while maintaining our existing signature holes such as Hole 12 and Hole 18 etc.

As members would recall from my message in the Raffles Connection Mar/Apr issue, I have mentioned that the PPSC has set out design criteria that will serve to achieve a new Palm Course with an excellent playability; highly memorable for all level of players and sustainable maintenance. In early Mar, PPSC invited the following five regional and international GCAs (in alphabetical order) to submit their concept plans:

I am privileged to share with members a few exciting holes at this stage. Following the tradition of many famous golf courses, N&H had created a series of three holes that are spectacular, challenging and memorable. The new finish of Hole 16 to Hole 18 will capitalize on great views of the Tenggah Reservoir and test the skills and course management of players with strong risk and reward. We intend to conduct an exercise later on to seek members’ suggestions on unique and memorable names for these three holes. A brief description for the new Hole 16 to 18 is available on the facing page. A display will be available soon at the club to show the preliminary design of each hole.

• Beau Welling Design • Chris Pitman Golf Course Architecture Ltd • Nelson & Haworth Golf Course Architect • Parslow & Winter Golf Design • Robert Trent Jones II Golf Course Architect Upon the submission deadline in late Mar, the PPSC received valid proposals from three GCAs namely Beau Welling; Nelson & Haworth and Parslow & Winter. It was a challenging and rewarding task for the Subcommittee to select a final GCA. This was especially so as we were evaluating creative designs that involved different philosophy and approach. How to conduct an “Apple-to-Apple” comparison? The PPSC worked through a structured process and ranking matrix that comprised various design attributes and criteria. I am glad to report that the discussions and debates have been robust and transparent. Two finalists made their presentation in late Apr and the PPSC made its recommendation during its 5th meeting held on 24th Apr after a thorough discussion.

All the above is a giant step forward in the direction for Raffles to realized its vision of becoming a top premier golf club in Singapore and the region. This vision cannot be achieved by the PPSC and General Committee alone. We would call upon members soon to form taskforce and focus groups during the tender and specification preparation. We hope you will make a small step forward and together our combined efforts and contributions will eventually make Raffles Country Club a reputable premier golf club in Singapore and the region. Wong Toon Suan Vice President Chairman, Palm Project Subcommittee

The appointed GCA, Nelson & Haworth Golf Course Architect (www.nelsonhaworth.com) comes with great credential and track records in Australia (e.g. Macquarie Links International Golf Club), Canada, China (e.g. Sheshan International, Jade Dragon Snow Mountain Golf Club), France (e.g. Golf du Champs de Bataille) , USA, Malaysia (e.g Kuala Lumpur Golf and Country Club) , Indonesia (e.g. Bali Golf and Country Club) and etc, including our very own Lake Course, where the 18 greens have been remodeled by N&H.

Hainan Trip

A

total of 19 members visited Hainan from 15 to 19 April 2014 with the trip organized and led by RCC Golfing Dept. Upon arrival, we received a very warm and hospitable welcome from our newly signed reciprocal club at BFA Golf Club at BOAO of Haikou. The club's General Manager, Mr. Larry Liu, and Mr. Michael Wei, Sales Manager received the entourage personally on the arrival of our members. The course was in an immaculate condition after having hosted the World Economic Forum just a week before our scheduled arrival. Each member also received a souvenir handed personally by the General Manager of BFA Golf Club before departure.

01

Members also got to enjoy another reciprocal club at Meishi International Golf Club on the 4th day of the trip. Again, this is another well maintained golf course worth visiting. The reception by the club management, Mr. Wang Jing, was also friendly and welcoming. In total, members played four different, good quality courses. It was a memorable golf trip with many asking after the trip when our next trip to Hainan will be.

For Member’s Information Golfers’ Terrace Operations Issued by The General Committee

F

or more than 10 years, RCC has adopted the following model for its Golfers’ Terrace Operations. - Food & Kitchen staff – outsourced - Service Staff-employed by RCC & managed in house. The Food & Beverage Sub-committees’ key function was to ensure that the caterer produces food that are tasty and consistent in quality, monitor hygiene and cleanliness of kitchen and food, discuss and agree to pricing of food and explore and try out new variety of dishes. Any changes in the above model would have to be approved by the General Committee.

The above model is a carefully calibrated balance between complete outsourcing (where the Club has little or no control over food & service quality) and complete in-house operations (where the Club has no expertise in food supply and cooking). We have learnt the hard lesson from other Clubs that full inhouse catering can be a big revenue loser. So it is not just about dollars and cents, ie. going for the highest tenderer with a significant decline in the number of service staff.

service team redundant. 18 RCC staff would have to be terminated and the years of hard work to build the service team would be irrevocably lost!

It’s the total experience. Our model that encompasses good food, prompt and timely delivery of the food and a pleasant service ambience has worked well and there is no need for a drastic change to a total out source model.

There was insufficient time to call a new TENDER with the right model. CB’s contract expired on 31/3/2014. So a temporary caterer was brought in to provide GT Catering until the damage done by the F&B Sub-Committee is rectified. The General Committee has set up a Task Force to source for a long term caterer for GT.

WHAT HAPPENED? China Blue (“CB”) has been GT caterer for more than 5 years. With input from a succession of F&B Sub-Committees over the years, they have produced almost 100 varieties of lunches and new desserts at reasonable prices. The Club has built up a service team of local, Malaysian and PRC staff. With the opening of the Albatross, the club has now got a trained bartender among the service team. GT service is among the best among Singapore golf clubs.

CB has an option to extend the catering service for 36 months. They put in their request.

The Golfers Terrace is the focal point of the Club. Food and service is of paramount importance. The General Committee will not allow a Sub-Committee to act rashly. The TENDER was voided by the General Committee.

Meantime, we hope that members will bear with the inconvenience as the temporary caterer settles down.

The F&B Sub-Committee, without knowledge or approval of the General Committee, rejected this and proceeded to call for a new TENDER. The TENDER terms, without the knowledge and approval of the General Committee, changed the GT Catering model to COMPLETE OUTSOURCING. This would have made our

A Mesmerising Experience at Ashinoko Country Club

R

CC Member, Ms. Ivy Khaw recently returned from Ashinoko Country Club, our reciprocal club in Japan, and shared her account of the memorable trip with us. 1) Please share with us your golfing and hospitality experience at Ashinoko. “From the time we did the booking, they were helpful by reminding us about the rate, weather, temperature, etc by email.” 2) What impresses you in regards to the service experience, what did you like about this place? “It was a very cold and rainy day when we visited Ashinoko. Mr Steve Nomura (CEO) and Mr Steven Nomura (President) welcomed us warmly, arranged a photo taking opportunity and prepared blankets and heat pads for us as it was really misty and cold. During the 9 hole break, clean and new socks (complimentary) were provided in case our feet were wet due to the rain.”

3) How would you rate the club (overall experience) on a scale of 1 to 10? “The course is beautiful, hilly, and challenging. Ashinoko is also famous for its Mt Fuji view. The people there are nice, hospitable and we enjoyed the tasty food too.” 4) Would you visit the club again or recommend it to our members? If yes? Why? “Surely, I will play there again. I enjoyed the misty early spring harsh weather, and I believe it is more beautiful in summer and autumn.”

Pitch ‘n’ Chips (Golf Themed Café) Opens at Lakefront in June

C

ome June 2014, we are delighted to announce the inaugural opening of Pitch ‘n’ Chips, Singapore’s first fully golf themed café, located at RCC pool side terrace. Overlooking the breathtaking lake course, the alfresco style café stimulates a feeling of dining in an upmarket golf club. The establishment offers a delectable and diverse range of Thai, Indian and Western cuisine that will keep customers wanting more.

The café will also broadcast live championship matches not only for the golf enthusiast but also for people who enjoy watching all sports. Be sure to visit Pitch ‘n’ Chips to relax and unwind with a variety of alcoholic and nonalcoholic refreshments. The café will open daily from 6:30a.m to 8:00p.m with delivery service to offices around the vicinity.

The addition of the professional golf simulator system offers members and the public the opportunity to practice their swing on one of the best swing analysis systems available in the market. Their Indoor Golf Simulators work on an infra-red system which identifies ball speed and carry, shot elevation, club head speed and angle, angle of attack, direction and distance, and many more aspects of the swing. The skills learned and practiced on a simulation system are absolutely transferable from indoor to outdoor play. With over 65 international championship courses, golfers have the choice of playing friendly games, or in tournament modes, such as longest drive, or nearest to pin, in the comfort of an air conditioned room. Plus you’ll never lose your balls!

Yam Seng Pte Ltd started out as a sourcing and distribution company, mainly focused within the travel retail industry sector. Golf Course Design What makes a great golf course?

I

f you go by Golf Digest’s ranking, and you are a history student of the World’s Golf Courses, you will discover that many of the iconic and revered golf courses were built many years ago, during what may be termed the “Golden Age of Golf Design” that is, the period between 1910 and 1937. The Golden Age was the age of many eminent golf Course architects such as Alister Mackenzie, Donald Ross, C.B. Macdonald, A.W. Tillinghast, George Crump, George Thomas Jr., H.S. Colt, C.B. Macdonald, just to name a few. By 1930 America had 6000 golf courses, up from 742 in 1916. Presently it is estimated that there are about 34,000 golf courses worldwide.

Which Is The Best? Pine Valley G.C. (NJ) USA is rated the best of the best, topping the Worlds 100 greatest Courses (Golf Digest _ February 2014). Never heard of this golf course? Not surprising, because it is a very very private members club and does not host tournaments. It is a winner by a clear margin over Cypress Point Club (No. 2), Augusta National GC (No 3), St. Andrews Links (old) (No. 7). Pebble beach ranks No 15. Pine Valley was also given rave reviews by the top golf architects in the era when built (1918). The comments from these architects give some clues what makes Pine Valley the best then and still so today.

Is there any reason why such a large percent of today’s’ World’s Top 100 Golf Courses were from the Golden Age? “To this day, there is no official educational program for those hoping to become golf architects” – Geoff Shackelford

“The Pine Valley Course to a greater degree than any other course I have ever seen possess individuality. Everywhere this individuality was shown, nowhere more than on the greens.” – Chick Evans

I would like to postulate one possible reason. The Golden Age golf architects really looked at the spirit and soul of the game. From this, they appear to come to the conclusion golf is a strategic game. Each evolved their personal design philosophy to flesh out their ideas on golf course design strategy.

“Pine Valley is, with the possible exception of Cypress Point, by far the most spectacular golf course in the world. I have never seen a course where the artificial bunkers have such beautiful and natural appearance, and the undulations on the greens are excellent. On the other hand I do not consider any course ideal unless it is pleasurable for every conceivable class of golfer”. – Alister Mackenzie

“Today’s golf courses are rarely designed to make golfers think … the primary mark of a top golf course during the golden age was not in its prettiness or the color of its grass … the landmark courses were special then and timeless now because of their ability to test the mental as well as physical component of the golfer’s game, a concept better known as strategy.” – Geoff Shackelford “The Golden Age of Golf Design” Are these design philosophies still relevant today? Let us each be the judge in our own mind as we read on. But is there any reason why we should be interested in golf course design in the first place? “Every golfer worthy of that name should have some acquaintance with the principles of golf course design, not only for the betterment of the game, but for his own selfish enjoyment, let him know a good hole from a bad one and the reasons for a bunker here and another there, and he will go a long way towards pulling his score down to respectable limits. When he has taught himself to study a hole from the point of view of the man who laid it out, he will be much more likely to play it correctly.” – Bobby Jones (America’s greatest golfer who had a hand in designing Augusta National)

“I remember that when I visited that truly magnificent and terrifying course, Pine Valley, I remarked to one of my hosts that if the club had any members who were rather old or fat or unskillful, they must find it very hard work. He scouted the notion and declared that such members were as proud as a peacock and as happy as sand boys if they went around in 115 in place of their normal 120. This seems to show that in Philadelphia, at any rate, the poorer golfers are not poor in the manly virtues.” – Bernard Darwin “If one could have a course with sand dunes, with water hazards both as streams and as lakes, with fairways through virgin forests, with long, rolling contours, high plateaus (for greens), lovely little valleys to play through and to cross as hazards, one would have the superlative and almost ideal golf country. Such is Pine Valley... Every true golfer loves Pine Valley. It may be censured by some as very difficult, especially from the rough; yet its charm is the lure of its diversity coupled with the thrill of surmounting its varied hardships.” – George Thomas “Pine Valley is the only course in America which has been loved and pictured as a thing of structural beauty. It is a noble creation, a course of heroic carries it has the rugged grandeur, the wealth of magnificent hazards that makes it the playground of the gods.” – Robert Hunter

On St. Andrew’s “Old Course” “I believe the real reason St. Andrew’s Old Course is infinitely superior to anything else is owing to the fact that it was constructed when no-one knew anything about the subject at all and since then it has been considered too sacred to be touched.” – Alister Mackenzie “It is St. Andrews and its timeless charm that awakened many architects to the possibilities of course designs. The Old Course is strategic golf at its finest. Every hole provides numerous options of play and the best route to the hole is dictated by the varying conditions and the location of the flagstick. …. It plays differently every day and requires the golfer to adapt to its ever changing strategy. No golf course in the world requires more thought and skill, yet the player who plans its attack and executes it successfully can do very well on the Old Course. – Geoff Shackelford in “Golden Age of Golf Design” “The more I studied the Old Course more I loved it and the more loved it, the more I studied it.” – Bobby Jones

Golf Course Design Philosophies A. On Old vs New Golf Courses “Attitudes towards what exactly makes a great golf course differ from country to country. What impresses in China may not impress in Japan or Thailand, for example.” “Asians generally aren’t so in thrall of the older, traditional courses, mainly because most courses in this region are relatively new. Whereas westerners, who dominate the current Top 100 panels, certainty value older courses over new – because North America and especially the U.K. are home to the world’s oldest courses.” “Asians seems to prefer “garden” designs, where the course environment is green, heavily landscaped and manicured, while Westerners would appear to lean towards links-style course that are browner, scruffier and more “natural”. Asians seem to be less incline towards Links-style course.” – Singapore Golf Digest Feb 2014 issue

General Design Philosophies 1. The principal consideration of the architect is to design his course in such a way as to hold the interest of the player from the first tee to the last green and to present the problems of the various holes in such a way that they register in the player’s mind as he stands on the tee or on the fairway for the shot to the green. – William Flynn 2. “A round of golf should provide eighteen inspirations – not necessarily thrills, for spectacular holes may be sadly overdone. Every hole may be constructed to provide charm without being obtrusive with it” – A.W. Tillinghast

17

GOLF

8. “The strategy of the golf course is the soul of the game. The spirit of golf is to dare a hazard, and by negotiating it reap a reward, while he who fears or declines the issue of carry, has a longer or harder shot for the second... yet the player who avoids the unwise effort gains advantage over one who tries for more than in him lies, or who fails under the test.” – George Thomas 9. The premium on accuracy should carry the greatest reward for this is the essence of any game. Carry, while slightly less valuable than accuracy is important in that it promotes boldness. Length may be considered least important but this becomes quite a factor when a player is able ot mould all three tests together. – William Flynn The 8th green (right hand green) at Pine Valley

B. Length vs Strategy

3. “If the average golfer considers the points of strategy which have been worked out in advance for a properly designed hole, he will undoubtedly improve his game in his play of such a problem. There is no question but that the strategy of golf is one of its most important assets, and our newer courses present many most interesting situations which increase their value. The question of strategy is of the utmost importance to the golf architect and to the golfer, and such strategy will be developed more and more during the coming years. – George Thomas writing in his 1927 Book “Golf Architecture in America”

1. “Length means nothing without character, but the true test must have sufficient length and character.” – George Thomas

4. Bearing in mind that golf should be a pleasure and not a penance, it has always been my thought to present a test of the player’s game; the severity of the test to be in direct ratio with his ability as a player.” – Donald Ross 5. “When it is more generally recognized that a truly fine round of golf represents the accurate fitting together of shots that bear a distinct relation to each other, with the greens opening up to best advantage after placed drives, then the game will be a truer test of the mighty ones than so many courses now present” – A W Tillinghast 6. “Wise” is the man who knows how to play each hole as he should play, and skillful the golfer who can place his shots where they should go. Such a player is exceeding hard to defeat (on a golf course)” – George Thomas 7. The best way to whet the appetite and improve the game of any golfer is to offer an incentive and provide a reward for high class play, and by high class play is meant simply the best of which each individual is capable. Placing a premium on accuracy with due consideration for length should be the aim of all men who design golf courses, for accuracy in the play signifies skill and skill is generally the master of brute force. – William Flynn

18

RAFFLES COUNTRY CLUB

2. “The strategy of golf is the thing which gives the short accurate player a chance with a longer hitter who cannot control his direction or distance.” – George Thomas 3. “I must confess to an abiding affection for Merion … Merion has always played a bit on the short side and unless conditions of wind and weather make it otherwise … But chick’s “white faces” (bunkers) will still be there guarding closely the sides of every green and fairway, making it tough for anyone who stray from the straight and narrow.” – Bobby Jones (The 2013 US Open was played at Merion. No player broke par on a course of less than 7000 yds which most people consider very short for a US Open) 4. The desirable length for a good golf course is from 6000-6400 yards. But bear in mind that it is quality, not quantity that counts. In my work I have repeatedly had trouble making committees see the force of this. They seem possessed with the idea that length is the main desideratum. It is beyond all argument that many a long course is noticeably uninteresting, in contrast to shorter ones that are well thought out and skillfully constructed.” – Donald Ross

C. The PAR-3 “One Shotter” With advancing golf equipment technology, clubs that hit longer and straighter, balls that go further and stops on a pinwheel, the “one-shotter” Par 3 holes looks almost anachronistic today. Is it really so? TV fans of golf still stay reverted in their sofa and arm chairs when the pros play such famous par 3’s such as Augusta National’s 12th hole, Pebble Beach’s 17th hole

GOLF

(where Tom Watson’s birdie from the rough saw off Jack Nicklas) and the “Postage Stamp” 7th hole which is a mere 107 yds, St. Andrew’s 11th “Eden” hole where Bobby Jones tore up his card after 3 attempts at getting out of the “Hill” bunker and the 17th at TPC-Sawgrass where Sergio Garcia dumped his tee-shot in the water and never contended thereafter in the 2013 Players Championship. Par 3s “one shotter” holes can be HIGH DRAMA! In fact the Golden Age Architects appear to treat the one shotter as a challenge that required special consideration. Here is what some of them say: 1. “One shotters are most important. In these holes one gets a keener interest on the tee shot than on others because it may be placed on the green by most men.” – George Thomas

Pine Valley 5th Hole

2. “The merit of any hole is not judged by its length but rather by its interest and its variety as elective play is apparent. It isn’t how far but how good.” – A.W. Tillinghast (on the 104 yds Par 3 Fourth hole in Baltimore, one of the most famous par-3s in America). His 190 yrs Par 3 Tenth Hole in Winged Foot Golf Club is self-proclaimed to be “best par-3 I ever built”. 3. “Who shall say which par affords the most superlative play? No one will deny the lure, intrigue and importance of the one shotter.” – George Thomas 4. “I think that I will always adhere to my old theory that a controlled shot to a closely guarded green is the surest test of any man’s golf” – A.W. Tillinghast (on the short 150 yds Par Eleventh Hole in San Francisco Golf Club) 5. “Some of the most interesting holes are those where the best line to the flag is not direct” – A.W. Tillinghast (on the 180 yds Par 3 Second Hole in Somerset Hills golf Club)

St. Andrew’s 11th “Eden” Hole Par: 3 Yards: 174

6. “What I like best about Merion is the character and variety of her short holes … the third and the ninth are of similar yardage, around one hundred and ninety, but an elevated tee makes the ninth play a bit shorter. At the same time, this green is more tightly trapped, and any considerable deviation from the correct line will more than likely result in a penalty.” – Bobby Jones

Lake Course Opening to TifEagle Ultradwarf Greens Friday, 25 April 2014

A

fter a little over 5 months of down time we are getting back to playing on the newly converted TifEagle Ultradwarf Lake Course greens. Many other Singapore golf courses have already completed changing over from their old Tifdwarf and we now are now set to join them with better quality and uniform putting surfaces. Thank you for your patience and understanding during this conversion to the new green grass. What did we do during the 5 months? With the guidance of N&H Design we took on the following tasks:

Greens Green soil profile depths were tested and samples sent to Brookside Laboratory in Ohio to verify and develop our plan. We then removed the top 10-15cm of old thatch and Tifdwarf plant parts. Some of the greens that were not remodeled in 2002 we had to dig deeper to remove heavy organic deposits and then added new sand as needed to reach our 40cm profile depth. The tie-in of the green surface to the green surrounds was improved by taking away that top dressing sand layer buildup and edging groove that caused a sunken “moat type circle around the greens. We now

20

RAFFLES COUNTRY CLUB

have a smoother transition from the Zoysia approaches and chipping areas onto the TifEagle green surface. The collar of the green is Zoysia matrella and it is established outside the plastic barrier we installed to prevent encroachment into the TifEagle.

Bunkers N&H Design marked out new bunker outlines to improve the visibility and aesthetics of the bunker shapes. Since many of the bunkers had serious erosion problems during heavy rains we installed a bunker liner called SandMat to reduce the erosion problems. The new edges were cut out and liner installed by TEHC International. Several bunkers were also moved closer to the greens, especially on holes 9 and 18. The original RTJ2 design had a bunker left of 18 green and that was also restored. A total of 4 bunkers were filled in by N&H on holes 14, 15, 17 and 18. The reasons were playability, highlight the nearby bunkers, and speed of play concerns.

Fairways Fairway lines were adjusted by N&H, mostly to widen and to provide for a more interesting flowing fairway line. The fairway mowing pattern had become quite narrow and straight. They also suggested an intermediate cut of 1.5 meter which we are trying to establish for more definition. The roughs have become 100% Seragoon grass over the

last 12 years since the 2002 regrassing and it tends to lie flattish and the ball sits up higher in the rough. This reduces the definition we hope to establish. Cultural practices of aerification and vertical mowing were carried out 2 times during the 5 month period. These practices will help with providing more definition for the fairways.

Tee Boxes The tees are scheduled for leveling and regrassing starting this July. We have available 3,800m2 of new Zoysia each month and we will complete all the tees over a 4-5 month period. We will install the plastic barrier around each tee to help reduce the encroachment of Seragoon. With a pure Zoysia grass sward we can use preventative and post emerge herbicides to stop the weeds and Seragoon grass from taking over again.

Tree and Ornamental grass Plantings Several new tree plantings were suggested by N&H to replace lost trees and to enhance the views. On number 3 there were 5 Hopea and 8 Coconut trees planted. On number 11 there were 2 coconut trees planted behind and to the right along with 3 Hopea trees behind the green. On number 15 there were 5 Red Palm and 1 Coconut added. Ornamental grasses were planted on number 18 to help hide the big electrical box and large concrete vault.

GOLF

Grasses were planted nearby the irrigation controllers to help hide and protect the controllers from being run into by carts and turf equipment as it has happened many times in the past.

Weed Control Upon my arrival here June 1st 2013, I saw that the roughs were 100% Seragoon and the fairways 50/50 Seragoon and Zoysia. Cow grass, nut sedge, crabgrass and spurge are quite problematic weeds persisting throughout the course. We did hand weed out all the cow grass from the Lake fairways after closing but it is coming back with a vengeance. We have established a fairway spraying program of Barricade pre emergence to help try to reduce the seed germination of many of these weeds that are propagated by seed. Post emerge control is erratic and causes many discolored spots, especially on the sensitive Seragoon grass. Our being on limited chemical usage due to the nearby PUB water catchment area also limits our weed control efforts along with a reduced maintenance budget. We are hopeful the Barricade product will help and our staff will continue to hand weed and spot spray cow grass in the fairways, but in rough areas we will have to let it go until the course can be scheduled for regrassing with all new Zoysia grass in the future after Palm Course is back online.

Retaining Wall

Support and Contact Information

The 18th green side retaining wall was strengthened by adding a steel supporting band and a fabric liner was added to keep sand from sifting through the timbers. This was a safety issue for many of the timbers were becoming unstable. The action the committee took will last for many years until a new wall can be constructed.

The Golf Committee and General Committee fully supported these changes to help provide an enjoyable golfing experience on the Lake course. Please check out some of the work tasks carried out on the Lake Course and to contact me by visiting the following website: rafflesturf.com.

Distance Marking The distance marking has had quite an overhaul on the Lake Course. The 6 metal poles have been replaced by 6 Kirby markers, 2 each for 100, 150 and 200 meter markers located on each side of the fairway and a 150 meter pole for alignment guidance from the tee and judging distance as well. The Kirby markers can be driven over unlike the metal poles or the tee balls in the center of the fairways. The new tee signage posts are located near the cart path all in one location. The old metal distance signs to the side of each tee have been removed. The main purpose of the changes is take advantage of our natural setting near the large lake with a simpler and less cluttered presentation. We have 6 Kirby markers, all the fairway sprinklers with distances, cart path marking and the 150 pole. There is plentiful distance marking indicators for everyone to access.

Staying Healthy on the Course

J

ustine Moss checks out a few products in the market designed to give golfers maximum comfort either pre, during or post-round.

1. Airweave premium bedding toppers Newly crowned HSBC Women’s Champions winner Paula Creamer credits airweave with helping to improve her performance by ensuring a quality sleep whenever she is on the road. She was introduced to airweave after suffering discomfort after a traffic accident in Thailand back in2013. She says, “I have been using airweave’s premium topper and pillow every since and it helps me not only to sleep well but also has become an important factor for my game as well.” Founded in 2007 by CEO and President Mr. Motokuni Takaoka, airweave is a bedding topper made by weaving together resin fibre to offer comfortable support for the best possible quality sleep. The scientificallysupported bedding topper not only allows for more restful slumber through its ergonomic, breathable design, but is also comprised of highly resilient material that allows sleepers to turn over easily while still maintaining a deep and restorative sleep. The dispersion of body pressure also relieves back and neck pain. Airweave is also engineered for portability so users can carry the toppers quite easily. After its first launch in Japan in 2007, airweave

has become Japan’s leading producer of mattress toppers and supplier to the world’s top athletes, hotels and first class airline cabins. In addition, airweave also supports international Olympic delegations including the US Olympic Committee, French National Olympic and Sports Committee, in addition to the Japanese Olympic Committee for the recent Sochi 2014 Winter Olympic Games. They are available in Singapore at Takashimaya, and bedding toppers start at $890 for a single-size topper and $260 for a standard pillow.

2. Physionique There are two types of golf therapy at Physionique, which is a Physiotherapy and Rehabilitation Clinic located in Singapore. They assess your golf game from a physiotherapist’s standpoint. Back pain, tennis and golfer’s elbow, shoulder and wrist pain, and muscle strains are some of the common golf injuries they treat. With the proper tools and know-how, they perform a biomechanical analysis of your golf swing to determine the relationship of your swing pattern to your injury. This together with the golf injury rehabilitation programme is designed to get you back on the course, painfree. The golf performance program aims to give you better alignment, improved body turn, muscle control and power to enhance your game. It consists of a biomechanical analysis of your golf swing and physical assessment followed by a programme

to address your particular needs. The programme combines specialized massage and hands-on techniques with golf-specific exercises. 8 Claymore Hill #01-02 8 On Claymore Singapore 229572 Tel : 6734 0245

3. Heliocare Sun screen protection now doesn’t just come in the form of liquid or spray for the body. Now you can take it orally – Heliocare Oral with Fernblock® can help make up for the disadvantages of topical sunscreen, providing protection to all skin areas and reaching the skin’s deepest layers. It has been extensively tested for its safety and efficacy, with the key ingredient, Fernblock® an excellent antioxidant property that is able to reduce free radicals by up to 50%, preventing formation of hyperpigmentation caused by UV rays. It protects the entire skin surface, increasing the skin’s resistance against sunburn by up to 300%. The protection from Fernblock® also slows down skin aging by up to 55% through the inhibition of collagen depletion caused by UVA. If you still prefer the liquid kind, Heliocare does come in gels and sprays. All products are available for purchase in a number of hospitals and pharmacies across Singapore.

4. KT Tape KT Tape (Kinesiology Tape) is an elastic sports and fitness tape designed for muscle, ligament, and tendon pain relief and support – perfect to strap on before a golf round if you’re experiencing any pain. It is lightweight, easy and comfortable to wear and can be used for literally hundreds of common injuries such as lower back and knee pain, shin splints, carpal tunnel syndrome and tennis and golf elbow. It also provides 24-hour relief per application for days at a time through sweat, strain and humidity, and can even be worn in water thanks to its specially designed adhesive. The KT Tape is applied along muscles, ligaments, and tendons (soft tissue) to provide a lightweight, external support that helps you remain active while recovering from injuries. It also creates neuromuscular feedback (called proprioception) that inhibits (relaxes) or facilitates stronger firing of muscles and tendons. This feedback creates support elements without the bulk and restriction commonly associated with wraps and heavy bracing. It is made up of reinforced 100% cotton sheathes (ORIGINAL) or specially engineered, ultra-durable synthetic fabric (PRO) designed to provide durability and increased strength. These materials provide uni-directional elasticity- allowing the tape to stretch in length but preventing the tape from

stretching in width. These fibres are made to provide stable support without restricting motion. Its unique Matrix Mesh also allows for moisture release which is critical for comfort and wear-ability. The more porous the tape’s weave, the better it releases moisture caused by sweating or being worn in the water. The design provides more breathability and release of moisture so that it is comfortable to wear for up to five days at a time without itching, irritation or reactions with the skin.

5. SpiderTech Kinesiology Tape Another type of KT Tape on the market is SpiderTech and its products use a highgrade cotton material with 100% acrylic, hypoallergenic adhesive. It is water-resistant and breathable, and can be worn for up to five days. The SpiderTech Tape allows one to modify kinesiology taping to fit any need without losing the non-allergenic gentle wave pattern and superior adhesion. The SpiderTech Powerstrips replicate the most commonly used spiders designed to both stand-alone and integrate with existing pre-cuts or modified tapings to maximize kinesiology tape therapy benefits. The range includes SpiderTech Standard, Gentle, Y-Strips and Jumbo and come in a variety of colours. For more information visit www.mysportsstuff.com.sg.

Out Of Africa

Simply Out of This World

O

ut of Africa is a memoir by Isak Dinesen, and most of us would remember the epic movie success with Meryl Streep as lead actress.

It was a project I felt so passionate about and trust me when I say even during last Christmas we were not sure if we would be able to form a group to go visit this far away land. Now after coming back and writing this article to share with you, just the opportunity to have played golf with a scenic backdrop such as this first picture you see here is enough for me to say “Hit me with your best shot!” Besides golf, the lion sighting at Kruger National Park was something that not everyone has had a chance to experience. There were seven lions and lionesses in their natural habitat in such close proximity with no barrier between us. Upon first entering the park, we immediately sighted elephants, zebras and impalas. Over the next 2 days, we spotted many birds, leopard tortoises, porcupines, crocodiles white and black Rhinoceros, hippopotamus, kudu and giraffes, all wild and in their natural setting. We were so lucky to come across the lions at our last game drive. Yen, Alan’s wife, had reservations going on a safari but after the first game drive she was the first one to convince others to go.

Zanna, Patrick’s wife, at the Ernie Els Wine Estate is aspiring to be a golfer. Sundowner at the top of Table Bay Mountain, Champagne. Yen & Zanna, 2 non golfers, at Cape of Good Hope had the time of their lives! Breathtakingly beautiful in all aspects, capturing the scenic sight at The Cape Of Good Hope says it all. Everything we did , everywhere we went. It was picturesque. Needless to say, with impeccable service and the group got along so well the group had an immediate reunion to attend a dinner hosted by Alan to celebrate his hole in one at Pinnacle Point Hole 13. Congratulations Alan! What a way and what a place to reach the ultimate golfer’s dream of a hole in hole!

For me this video shot is priceless, I never knew I was ever getting so close to a real lion, not just one but seven of them, you could hear a pin drop.

Mary Yang’s 1st ostrich ride in her life! How did it feel Mary?... Historically, we would worry if the group was going to be bored, dinner in which restaurant etc. This trip had so many moments for us to pocket, nothing really matters! This group photograph sipping Champagne at Table Mountain felt like we were on top of the world. This trip’s success was all thanks to our guide and good friend, Lucy Kublikowski. Incredible service rendered from the heart & professional in every way possible. From us to you Lucy, thank you for being the gem that you are!

A Harmony of “East meets West” Scotch Whisky Dinner Saturday, 26th April 2014 @ The Albatross

G

oing Places with Lifestyle has been the motto of our Lifestyle Sub Committee headed by Mr.Peter Tan since 2013. it was simple when Whisky Expert Mr. Andrew Skiene approached the committee concerning this Whisky Dinner which is still relatively new as compared to Wine Pairing Dinners.

Andrew even brought his bag of pipes to welcome the guests and he did impress the ladies, he sure did but apparently it was not this musical instrument that had the ladies buzzing like bees ask Miss Denise Seow, our organizing chairman of this event from Lifestyle Sub Committee who has the complete story...

We cannot bring our members physically to Scotland, let us then bring Scotland to Raffles Country Club. Thinking caps on and a few bottles of whiskies later et voila!

Before the end of the evening, a casual survey was done verbally by management to see if members and guests had a great time and if they wanted to have these dinners again. A resounding yes! Now that they realised how fun it is, the next event will be overflowing with family and friends!

A Harmony of “East meets West” - Scotch Whisky Dinner was en route to success. The menu included specialties from Shanghai to America via Vietnam, detour to Singapore transit Hong Kong and final destination Europe. Mr. Andrew Skiene shared his knowledge of cultural whisky tips, making this flagship whisky event (initiated by the Lifestyle Subcommittee) a memorable and successful one for all in attendance.
