PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE “The mediocre teacher tells. The good teacher explains. The superior teacher demonstrates. The great teacher inspires.” -William Arthur Ward As Principal of Raffles College of Higher Education, I am especially privileged to present “InSight”, our graduating cohort and their achievements. There is nothing more wonderful at the beginning of each year than to look upon the fresh new faces that have registered for their chosen field of studies. There is eagerness, an anticipation of things to come during their years of study at Raffles College of Higher Education. Then comes the passage of time, years pass, and final projects are presented at the annual graduation event. How they have changed – they have become more confident and sophisticated, ready for the world. Flipping through the pages of the portfolios and display stands, we see evocative images and illusions, ideas that now seem to re-invent themselves, as now a new attitude exists in them. The ideas now seem to open new avenues of thoughts within each student, and in this state of transformation, what once seemed impossible is now possible. Each student in turn begins to finally realize that today is the first day that their dreams become reality. What was once elusive has now become reality and we the audience now have the chance to see this sight and marvel at their work. As this new reality settles into the mind of each graduate tonight, it is again that familiar ritual that occurs every year, where the graduating cohort leaves Raffles College of Higher Education to begin to live the life and career for which our dedicated staff has prepared them over their many years of study. We look forward to our graduating students in keeping the tradition and passion alive so that years from now, we the staff can say, “I was that teacher who inspired and ignited that flame during their years of studies with us.” On behalf of the staff of Raffles College of Higher Education, we wish them much success in their future endeavours.

FASHION DESIGN “I was alone, so I created my own world, a more colourful world. I drew a lot and created an imaginative world. That became my way of evolving, in a way I think. -Hussein Chalayan Fashion transforms us; it makes us look past the mundane as it evokes images and visions that help us to re-define who we are as designers. Sometimes it is not the fashion itself which drives our choices, but rather an artistic response to the times. The collections merely become an opportunity for the designers to share their experiences, take us on journeys into the past or into the future or more recent influences from pop culture and the subcultures that have braved the test of time.

Catherine Soepadhi Le Logis de l’artiste - The Artist’s Home An artist is idle without a muse. The museartist relationship of Lee Miller and Man Ray started with intimacy then eventually grew into obsession. A riveting passage of their mutual feelings of suicidal love, artistic beliefs, but yet too utterly unconventional to believe in marriage, it is romance bleeding with jealousy and lust. “I have loved you terrifically, jealously; it has reduced every other passion in me and, to compensate, I tried to justify this love by giving you every chance in my power to bring out what was interesting in you.” – Man Ray to Lee Miller

Nguyen Hoang Gia Bao Eric Black Paradox Carrying the Contradiction and Mystery of Gothic Architecture, a new definition of beauty has been created within this collection – “Black Paradox”. The greatness and artistry of Gothic Architecture is conveyed, combined and transferred as style lines, silhouette, and fabric metamorphosis. More than that, reality and spirituality are contained in every Gothic building; it is not simply architecture, rather a heavenly feeling that is perceived which turns it into a shelter where humans go for protection and to find peace in their soul.

An inspiration for women, she is Lady Georgiana Spencer. This collection tells the story about a woman who dares and challenges, about the idea of women’s rights, and how women should be the most beautiful creatures that are celebrated at all times, because to be a woman is to be strong and independent.

Steffie Setiawan The Savants M.C. Escher, Albert Einstein, Andy Warhol, Vincent van Gogh – these are just some of the world’s renowned geniuses and artists. They all have a common trait: they were all autistic savants. Dessy Wijaya The Wilde Dandy “The artist is the creator of beautiful things. To reveal art and conceal the artist is art’s aim.” - Oscar Wilde Oscar Wilde has always fascinated me. Yang Jin Yuan Vicky Tribes Tribes were the most primitive forms of human society, each having its own lifestyle, traditions and religion. Few of these tribes survive; in our modern times, the idea of “assimilate or die has caused many such societies to slow disappear from our world. Unfortunately, because of natural disasters, human factors and climate change, these last few surviving tribes face many threats to survival, and now are gradually disappearing. We need to save them, let these ancient tribes and their culture be preserved, so that they pass into the next century or distant future.

Gan Min Kate The Scream The inspiration of my collection came from a painting by Edvard Munch: ‘The Scream’. In this collection I aim to capture the painter’s feeling and expression of despair and desolation using special beading shapes and dark colors. Nguyen Thuy Linh Gender Bending Not everyone is born agreeing with their biological gender. It is not fair for transgenders to live in a body that’s all wrong for them. In my own opinion, life is all about living and feeling comfortable in both body and mind. The idea of gender-bending dressing has created a blurred line for men and women and has captured the attention of the youths, as well as the society, for decades, which allow people to re-define themselves, emphasizing on freedom.

Lee Min Yi The Raphaelite Mystique ‘I’m a beggar born,’ she said, ‘I will speak out, for I dare not lie. Pull off, pull off the brooch of gold and fling the diamond necklace by. ‘’Nay now, my child,’ said Alice the nurse, ‘But keep the secret all ye can.’ She said, ‘Not so; but I will know if there be any faith in man.” -”Lady Clare” by Elizabeth Siddall, 1857 I am inspired by the feminism themes in the PreRaphaelite art movement of the Belle Epoque Era. Women were frowned upon for wanting to pursue their interests, yet they were an object of attraction, much like celebrities in paintings. They experimented with the arts and literature, and told their stories through their works, encouraging a change in the gender ideology of their time. My collection portrays my belief of feminism: a woman who is strong and independent, yet she also possesses the charms of a lady, fragile at times, but just a façade concealing the real power within.

Eva Yueh Hua Wong Dadaism “To all appearances, the artist acts like a mediumistic being who, from the labyrinth beyond time and space, seeks his way out to a clearing.” -Marcel Duchamp In the art world, Dadaism may have just been a way to protest against the war and society, rejecting traditions of the time. However Dadaism was also a form of art that allowed people to introduce each individual’s points of view with no restriction. There were no rules as Dadaism had no meaning.

Sun Chun Hong Nina Futurism This collection was inspired by the Futurism art movement which includes photography and architecture. The concepts of space, traditional culture and aesthetic value have changed since the first time humans landed on the moon in 1960s. I believe all of this has impacted the fashion industry. Futurism brought us great imagination and limitless possibilities. Longing for the uncertain future will always be an inexhaustible inspiration for fashion.

A culture that is confident, self-aware and has the ability to, as the modernists say, “make it new”. The vibrant musical styles, traditional costumes and art innovations. All of these define the Spanish culture. This collection was inspired by Queen Maria Louisa de Parma, who was known for her domineering nature and iconic fashion styles.

Htet Htet Su Hlaing Bird Of Paradise I was greatly inspired by the various species of these fantastic birds. S o much about them is spectacular: their colours; their feathers; especially the way that they display themselves in order to attract a mate, their bodies taking on a particular shape, like the letter U. This shape became the detail that I have used in my silhouette to mimic the magnificent elegance of this bird.

Amelia Setiawati Deconstruction I was inspired by this theme because it is a unique way to deliver fashion in an exceptional way. There are many different ways of deconstruction, one of them is Anti fashion Deconstruction. It is influenced by and taken “from the streets. One of the designers whom I am very inspired by is Vivienne Westwood. She is such a creative and eccentric and I was very inspired by her design aesthesis. For this collection I mixed a lot of different elements and ideas into a garment. Through the use of asymmetrical style lines and putting different weights of fabrics and lines together, I have tried to create something unique, different and conceptual.

Luong Ngoc Khanh Ha Zen The Dark Side Of The Song The collection is inspired by the mental disease, depression, and its many dramatic moods. I took inspiration from the actions of depressed people, the way they like dark colours, the way they slash themselves in body and soul, the way they are slightly unbalanced, and all of their layers of emotions. The collection is created using these key elements with the major colours black, gray, dark blue and red, with details such as slashes on many unbalance shapes or layers. 57 BACHELOR DEGREE | FASHION MARKETING

Lo Yunike Wildlife It surrounds my collection with its natural colours and touches of metallic gold; we get the impression that we are in the Garden of Eden. Little touches of feathers, combined with dark flower brocade and twotone fabrics, help to create a feeling of the wilderness – savage, dangerous and beautiful at the same time.

Risca Kataren Futuristica Perspectiva A mixture of the past and the future, Futuristica Perspectiva is a representation of what I believe the future would look like and of the thoughts of tomorrow; it is an imagination of the modern life without leaving the originality of Retro Futurism art. As time goes by and as people’s thoughts grow, the future seems to be a constant mystery. Simplicity is what we seek yet art may still be the inspiration.

59 BACHELOR DEGREE | FASHION MARKETING

Zeng Peiying Material Girl This collection “Material Girl” is inspired by a song performed by American singer-songwriter Madonna. It’s about a girl who worships money and all of the things that money can buy. As the saying goes, money makes the world go round, and this material girl is no exception to the rule.

Huynh Thuc Nghi Modern Warrior This collection was inspired by the terracotta warriors, the whole immortal army created by the first emperor of China, Qin Shi Huang. The army has stood the test of time to show us what exactly ancient warriors wore to protect themselves. I was drawn to the bog boxy silhouette and the fading colours as well as their armour.

61 BACHELOR DEGREE | FASHION MARKETING

Valerie Anggerek The Spirit of Life My collection is based on Hua Mulan and Samurai. It is all about the courage of one who is not afraid to die for what one believes in. It does not matter if one is a boy or a girl, one will always make sacrifices for the family.

Jessica Leong Huiqing Creatures Of Light Beneath the deep ocean, where sunlight can no longer penetrate, lies an incredible world of darkness. Against all odds, a diverse group of marine animals have evolved their own ways of dealing with darkness. Through a process known as bioluminescence, they have developed the ability to use chemicals within their translucent bodies to produce light in diverse colours that illuminate the perpetually dark depths of the oceans. The intricate beauty of this remarkable natural phenomenon is a source of fatal attraction.

63 BACHELOR DEGREE | FASHION MARKETING

Erna Beyond Wonderland This collection is inspired by the movie “Alice in Wonderland and the two main characters, Alice and The (Mad) Hatter. This is my portrait of Alice, who is less feminine and slightly mad, with a vintage look and feel expressed by the choices of colours and fabrics. This is how I imagine Alice to be as she ventures in the realm of Wonderland, with the eccentric group of characters that she meets along the way.

64 BACHELOR DEGREE | FASHION MARKETING

Ouyang Mengya Tang Dynasty I was greatly inspired by the Tang Dynasty, which is one of the most prominent eras in China’s history. It was a period of great art and culture as well as a fantastic period for Chinese fashion. I have tried to combine the simplistic yet sophisticated silhouette using new fabrics to create something young and fresh.

65 BACHELOR DEGREE | FASHION MARKETING

Le Thuy Tien Alex Russian Folklore My design is a conversation between modern fashion and the Russian folklore. I used the Babushka doll style-lines, puffed sleeves with floral lace, brightly coloured fabric of the traditional costume silhouette, as well as golden beads, to tell the romance of the traditions in Russian folkloric tales and stories.

66 BACHELOR DEGREE | FASHION MARKETING

Zhong Hao Wen The Original Maori people have managed over the centuries to retain their original culture and lifestyle. Their national costumes, with a large number of black and red shapes and symbols, represent strength and blood. I have tried to capture the essence of the Maori prints and have juxtaposed it with the Japanese style, mixing them together to create something new and diverse.

67 BACHELOR DEGREE | FASHION MARKETING

Franssylvia Harianto Femme Guerrière This ready-to-wear collection was inspired by the warrior, Saint Joan of Arc, who is possibly the most famous female warrior in the history of the world. I wanted to create a collection that is edgy with a touch of femininity, which reflected the confidence and courage of this young woman.

68 BACHELOR DEGREE | FASHION MARKETING

Melinda Karlina Natural Decay I was inspired for this collection by the element of decay in nature. I used colours that range from earthy tone to warm burgundy, thus creating a more contrasting feeling that reminds us that from the moment we are born, we begin to decay. Fashion, like nature, changes from priceless to precious.

69 BACHELOR DEGREE | FASHION MARKETING

Vellia Kurniadi Wood Sculpture This is my collection that is inspired by wood sculptures by Phoebe Hepburn. She is a wood sculptor who uses scraps of discarded wood and works with nude and neon colours. Consequently, in my collection, I use fabrics that have wood grain texture or fabric that have patterns like wood, in brown and beige colours, and also neon colours for the purpose of highlight.

70 BACHELOR DEGREE | FASHION MARKETING

Ha Phuong Linh Juna The Deliverance Of Madness I was very inspired by people who have suffered from various kinds mental disorders. Many have developed this condition because of stress or because they were abused at some stage in their lives. I looked at what they wore when they were in hospitals how they behaved in life and created this collection in homage to them.

71 BACHELOR DEGREE | FASHION MARKETING

Wong Su Hui Human Anatomy My collection is inspired by the Anatomical Exhibition of Real Human Bodies - Body Worlds. I focus on human bones and muscles, which I think are an amazing form of art. I discovered that bones aremostly symmetrical; the combination of bones, muscles and tendons allows both strong, broad movements, and delicate, precise ones. Muscles perform our actions by contracting or relaxing. Following this lead, my idea of using bones and muscles is to show the strong, however delicate, feeling which is connected to every single action that begins with contracting or relaxing.I feel that, like bones and muscles, human and clothes cannot be separated.

72 BACHELOR DEGREE | FASHION MARKETING

Ong May Yuen Justine Ethereal Escape Away from the humdrum and stress of modern urban living, Ethereal Escape explores the alternative avenue of mythical wonder.

73 BACHELOR DEGREE | FASHION MARKETING

Ong Ai Wen Natalli Modern Romanticism I have tried to recreate the principles of Romanticism, as stated by Cunningham and Jardine in “Romanticism and the Sciences: the original unity of man and nature, the history of the universe interpreted in human, spiritual terms, and salvation found through the contemplation of nature.

74 BACHELOR DEGREE | FASHION MARKETING

Nazreena Nisa Knights I want to show a fresh take on “the knight in shining armor”. Stepping away from the cliché of metallics, I want to show the heaviness of the armor together with the softness of the fabric.

75 BACHELOR DEGREE | FASHION MARKETING

Ng Sheng Yuen Owen Water Serpents The “Water Serpents” by Gustav Klimt is a beautiful series of paintings sometimes mistakenly termed “Water Snakes” or “Sea Serpents”. Water Serpents I & II both feature attractive and highly detailed depictions of women, which was the hallmark of this great Austrian artist. In this collection I wanted to portray a mystical and feminine vision through the use of colours, fabrics and ornamentations.

76 BACHELOR DEGREE | FASHION MARKETING

Grace Angela The 21st Century Marie Antoinette Do you, teenagers, want to live your life to the fullest? I believe everyone does, and so do I. My collection is based on Marie Antoinette, a young woman who inspired many people. She was a fashionista, a princess, a queen, and a teenager. Her life as a teenager reflected our life as teenagers today. Living as a teenager may seem good but sooner or later you will face problems that could drastically change you. That is Life.

77 BACHELOR DEGREE | FASHION MARKETING

Yunita Entwined I was inspired by the intricacy of string art and geometric forms. The collection stands powerful yet is soft, edgy and dynamic. It combines layers of strings, drapes and pleats, together with geometric cuts, to create an art that speaks for itself.

78 BACHELOR DEGREE | FASHION MARKETING

Priscilla Iforik Tjuandi Sweet Lolita My inspiration comes from one of the Japanese Style, Sweet Lolita. I have tried to create a doll-like woman, using pale colours, such as pink, lavender, and pearly grey, with details of ribbons and bows. Don’t afraid to be different as being different is the most beautiful thing on earth.

Boasting an area of over 77,500 square feet, consisting of a four-storey building and two blocks of conservation shop-houses, the openness of the building is complimented by glass canopies linking all 3 structures, leveraging fully on natural daylight to illuminate its entire ground area effectively. Artist’s Impression of the new RCHE facade. Within the new layout, students can also look forward to modernistic classrooms, workshops, multimedia labs, a well-stocked library and a stylish student lounge. Besides having more space for hands-on programmes to fuel the academic vision of a practice-oriented and industry-focused institution, Raffles Education Square is also conveniently situated for students and industry partners in the Central Business District. Complete learning resources, exclusively for Raffles students, with a touch of modern contemporary chic.
