SPACES OF AFFORDANCE: IDENTITY AS A PROGRAM IN ARCHITECTURE
AFFORDANCE
ANTITHESIS
Affordance is defined as the experiences provided in using an object based on the qualities and properties of the object. With this definition:
Neutral is a term used to describe a space that supports an impartial bias on an individual.
Affordance can be applied to architecture and the space it creates, exploring how the atmosphere, form and ergonomic of a space accommodate for the individual’s gender, faith and ethnic values.
However the word neutral can become a problematic term as it could also appropriate instead of appreciate the identity of the occupants.
To bring a Space of Affordance to a conservative nation where there are judicial and political restrictions to one’s identity requires the overcoming of additional resistance. To integrate Spaces of Affordance in these areas, the notion has to be easily accepted and digestable by the majority. Therefore looking at sire locations that deems repurposing allows for said program to remediate instead of interrupt the city fabric.
Neutral spaces are both phenomenological and subjective as a bathroom space is thought to be a safe and standard environment for cis gendered people but has never taken into account those who do not conform to these standards; A kitchen is organized to maximize efficiency in western cooking but not supportive of other cultures; A multi faith room is most often an empty square room that takes no account for the orientation, movement and privacy that each respective religion practices.
SPACES OF AFFORDANCE: IDENTITY AS A PROGRAM IN ARCHITECTURE PROJECT PROPOSL Spaces of Affordance introduces nodes that appreciates rather than appropriate the spectrum of identities that were historically displaced by the Dutch colonies in Jakarta, Indonesia. By breaking down one’s identity to gender, faith, and culture, these became the driving programmatic factor in developing these nodes. The application of traditional Indonesian vernacular architecture as a structural and organizational skeleton allows for a modular design approach. The use of nodes allows for a softer approach in introducing Spaces of Affordance in Indonesia’s very conservative and Islamic driven laws and regulations. Thus the opportunity to create different Spaces of Affordance that will mediate the tension of identities, and allow for a safe space for non-normative identities. The project will utilize Jakarta’s canal system that was developed by the Dutch colonies and left as ruins. Reclaiming the canal systems and its historical use of Affordance, these nodes will be integrated in a large strand of the city’s fabric. Surrounding the
canal system holds the lower end of Indonesia’s economic spectrum and often becomes the fenced line between the rich and the poor. These Spaces of Affordance can begin to blur the of the economic disparities that is very evident, as well as allow for a place of refuge during the constant flood crisis that wipes out homes of the shanty’s. Avoiding neutrality, where it is used to describe a space that supports an impartial bias on an individual. The word neutral can become a problematic term as it could also appropriate instead of appreciating the identity of the occupants. Neutral spaces are both phenomenological and subjective as a bathroom space is thought to be a safe and standard environment for cis-gendered people but has never taken into account those who do not conform to these standards. The project aims to open conversations and relationships between segregated identities through architecture that will be integrated with the city fabric in a familiar manner.
