Rotary & Peace Exhibition Curatorial Narrative

It is with great pleasure that we present to you the very first Rotary & Peace Exhibition in Hong Kong. In curating this exhibition, we were blown away by Rotary Club’s remarkable history and unwavering dedication to international peace and goodwill. Since the beginning of 20th century, Rotary peace conventions have gathered leaders from diverse nations and professional fields to discuss various social issues and offer solutions that are effective in mitigating conflicts around the world. In hopes to offer a clear and coherent understanding of how the concept of peace has evolved throughout the long history of Rotary International, the exhibition‘s narrative is presented chronologically, guiding you through Rotary’s commitment to peace from past, present to future. Not only does this framework inform you on Rotary International’s historic milestones, it also serves as an open forum for you to exchange personal and cultural ideas on peace, as well as an opportunity to engage in Rotary’s peace-promoting activities. Throughout the exhibition, you are encouraged to ask questions about Rotary’s current community projects and ways to support Rotary’s upcoming initiatives. The launch of Rotary Action Group for Peace (RAGFP) Hong Kong & Macao Chapter, the Futures of Education – a Rotary Perspective initiative, and the RAGFP School scheme are examples of many services and focus in Hong Kong and Macao. To a better future, we encourage everyone to join us and take part in different community outreach programs. We wish that this exhibition incites you to rethink the definition and positive impact of peace in today’s society, and that you resonate with Rotary’s peace-driven goals.

Rotary Peace Milestones CHAMPIONING PEACEBUILDING FOR OVER A HUNDRED YEARS

1905 1912 - 1921 Paul Harris (1868-1947), a Chicago attorney, founded the first Rotary Club, setting off over 100 years of service for the world.

The Rotary Foundation was set up by Rotary International (RI) president Arch C. Klumph in 1928, with a mission to enable Rotarians to advance world understanding, goodwill and peace through the improvement of health, the support of education, and the alleviation of poverty.

1942 1945

Rotary Club from 21 nations organized a conference in London that focused on education, science and culture in preparation for the post-war period. This conference was vital to the founding of UNESCO.

Rotary, as an observer organization, helped finalise the Charter of the UN in San Francisco.

1948 1985 Rotary promised to eradicate Polio as part of their peacebuilding efforts, saving the lives of over 2 billion children. Since 1988, Polio cases are down over 99%. 13

The UN Universal Declaration for Human Rights was finalised based on the framework and guidelines from the 1940 RI Convention in Havana.

1992 1999 - 2004 Rotary Peace Centres, supported by RI, was set up in various parts of the world in collaboration with universities. The first batch of Rotary Peace Fellows emerged in 2004, after completing postgraduate programmes of study with a core curriculum in international relations, peace and conflict resolution.

The first Rotary Peace City was established in Wagga Wagga, New South Wales, advancing a culture of peace in local communities.

2006

Rotary Global Peace Forums were held in Berlin, Honolulu and Hiroshima respectively with focus on exploring ways to promote peace in the daily lives and communities while forming global connections to promote understanding among nations.

A three-month peace studies certificate programme was launched for middle-to upperlevel professionals to be trained in international relations and become leaders in peace and conflict resolution.

2012 - 2013 2012 - 2015 2016 - 2017

RI recognized the Rotary Action Group for Peace (RAGFP) in their support of Rotarian peacebuilding efforts.

NOW

The Rotary Foundation celebrate the 100 years of charitable service. More than 1000 Peace Fellow Alumni worked in over 100 countries.

The Rotary Action Group for Peace Hong Kong & Macao Chapter is launched.

HISTORY OF ROTARY CLUBS & UNESCO The first Rotary Club of Hong Kong continues to work for peace in your community

⾹港扶輪社 禮密⾂

The Rotary Club of Hong Kong ( ) was created by the third Vice-President of Rotary International, James W. Davidson ( ). The Club was admitted to Rotary International on 20 February 1931. In its history, the Club provided clinics, amenities and training opportunities for the underprivileged, supported other charitable organisations, and provided scholarships to help prospective scholars. The Club’s list of achievements is long and impressive. The Club still exists today. It is currently one of many similar Rotary Clubs that together form District 3450 of Rotary International.

District 3450: Hong Kong, Macao, Mongolia, and the Guangdong Province District 3450 of Rotary International comprises Rotary Clubs in Hong Kong, Macao, Mongolia, and the Guangdong Province of the People’s Republic of China. The District has carried out numerous humanitarian projects, saving and improving lives across the region. Two of the projects are: 15

The “Hepatitis B Immunisation” project – Rotarians of District 3450 helped vaccinate one million newborn babies against Hepatitis B within 10 years’ time; The Leprosy Project – Rotarians work to eradicate leprosy from villages in Sichuan Province, serving nearly 1,700 villagers. Today, the district continues to bring humanitarian aid to people in need to embody the motto of “Service Above Self ”. Their most recent work is providing supplies to the underprivileged in response to the COVID-19 pandemic.

UNESCO is a long-time partner of Rotary. The birth of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and cultural Organisation (UNESCO) was brought about by the Rotarians from 21 countries who organised the Rotary conference in London in 1942, focusing on education, science and culture in preparation of the post-war period. Ever since then, UNESCO has been in close partnership with Rotary. In one of the first joint projects, UNESCO worked with Rotary in identifying and awarding social service and educational leaders in war-torn countries. Both UNESCO and Rotary defend education for all regardless of race, gender, beliefs and cultures. They advocate for the protection and diversity of cultures, and for dialogue as a source of tolerance and mutual respect. They also believe in and work for a sustainable development. Today, UNESCO and Rotary are working together more closely than ever, collaborating in various areas including clean water, improving literacy and sanitation.

FUTURE

04 32

Our world is changing; global health crises, accelerated climate change, growing use of artificial intelligence, strong social movements across the globe, just to name a few. What will tomorrow look like?

UNESCO’s Futures of Education: Learning to Become initiative is catalysing a global debate on how knowledge, education and learning need to be reimagined for the future.

Rotary fully supports the Futures of Education: Learning to Become initiative. Complimenting the “Futures of Education for Industry 4.0 & Beyond” Forum by the UNESCO Hong Kong Association Glocal Peace Centre, RAGFP Hong Kong & Macao Chapter has gathered insights from Rotarians through interviews to explore new perspectives on the futures of education. 33
