Amman the capital of Jordan is the city I chose for my graduation project , as news and statistic show that refugees in Amman are considered a political problem , other than they escaped from their countries according to the war , they don’t have a place to stay in, or any other major needs as health care and education. After research, to decrease this problem as much as possible , I chose to build a center that include variety of functions to serve refugees through education to enhance their skills in work and production ,and rehab.

Introduction

The Project Center for refugees to learn different skills to produce different products

Importance of the Project • Main: Solving a political problem. • Economical : make their needs as affordable as possible • Flexibility : use wasted space in production • Human needs : accommodate major needs of health , education Scope of the project • The users of the project are refugees in zaataari camp • User age will be of almost young adults to adults • It will host of both males and females

Site’s area • 85,000 m2

Reasons behind choosing this Site. •

Near the Syrian boundaries

Its already there , development for the camp , better living conditions

Inspire - Refugee Center Intends to continue this mission by building a new facility in our community that is a safe place which inspires healing. The intent of the unique design of the new building will be to encompass a variety of schemes that are inspirational and encourage hope. This modern multicultural approach design will encourage and inspire refugees to begin healing from shocking experiences and offer a chance for a new beginning.

Case Study 1

Syrian Refugee School for Women The civil war and conflict in Syria has caused a mass exodus of people from the country seeking safety in neighboring countries like Jordan. Women in these camps are met with huge difficulties dealing with young children and being fearful of leaving the confined housing units offered to them by the UNHCR. The proposal for a refugee school for young women revolves around the concept of creating a central space for the woman to be separated from the men and to have their own space in which they can leave the confined space of their small home.

Case Study 2

1st case study

>Encourage and inspire refugees to begin healing from shocking experiences and offer a chance for a new beginning. > It contains work shops , education.. > A safe place which inspires healing.

2nd case study

> It is proposed in al Zaatari camp >It is an affordable project >Simple and small >Offers education >Environmental considerations

Research outcomes

Introduction A refugee camp is a combination of the needs of the individual, and the demands of a complex urban network In this way they are similar to neighborhoods, within a larger city

Zaatari camp layout • Infrastructural planning in the Zaatari is a blend of grid and cluster planning. • The main street, Camp, runs through the middle of Zaatari from east to west. • Cluster planning gives occupants more freedom and responsibility when it comes to their individual shelter. • In addition cluster planning helps avoid some of the adverse environmental effects that result from the grid planning approach.

Location The site is located in Amman, Jordan , West Badiah District, Zaatri camp , main road ring road , surrounded by a social facility area and a mosque as well as a play ground also movable residential units and offices of police

Climate studies The climate of the region is just as unforgiving. Summer temperatures can exceed 100 degrees Fahrenheit, and the camp in frequently covered in snow in the winter

Typography

As the picture shows that the camp is full of residential units , as well as it includes other building functions of hospitals , school and mosques also shops and others that are centered in the camp , according to this I chose my project in a different space to accomplish verity of functions

The land typography is flat desert , that is divided in a grid shape , to achieve differences the building is designed in curved shaped

Concept Since the camp produces output to the country , it lacks having an input that makes refugees work more productive , Design is based on containment physically by adding circular spaces The passageway in the interior of the building It connects the light masses of the different courtyards together to form a passive cooling system, as it preforms flexibility ,and psychologically where The light enters the courtyard openings which manipulate the natural sun light ,it is also shown in elevations to show Arabic culture since the target is refugees

The Goal To add an input for development for a place that give refugees major needs of health and education The objectives is to make the building energy productive and efficient as well as making people productive to be able to live postwar

Design Process

Skylight are light transmitting (elements filling building envelope openings) forming all, or a portion of, the roof of a building's space for daylighting purposes

Shading devices Tensile fabric is ideal for sun shading as it works both externally and internally. For exterior use, that is waterproof

Courtyard

Mashrabia screen with move able windows gives shade and protection from the hot summer sun while allowing the cool air from the street to flow through.

Environmental studies

is an enclosed area, often surrounded by a building or complex, that is open to the sky.

Shutters in the south elevation to reduce the sun heat in summer also separated to distribute lighting in the building to enhance energy efficiency

Fabric water proof shading devices between buildings to shade side walks to protect from sun heat , rain , and snow while moving between building

In day time, the building will be lighted from the curtain wall , covered with separated shutters , while over the night time , buildings can be lighting from solar panels stored energy

Structure system The economical span of a flat plate for low to medium loads is usually limited by the need to control long-term . An economical span for a reinforced flat plate is of the order of 6 to 8 m and for pre stressed flat plates is in the range of 8 to 12 m.

Construction Local material was mainly used to build, and a well-perceived design with an integral courtyard linked to outer patios providing soft breezes and shady spots to rest. shade outer surfaces and provide aesthetically appealing contrasts. These design features help combat hot desert temperatures in the absence of air conditioning. Reuse Material: The intent of it is to encourage the reuse of building materials through salvage or refurbishment. Reusing resources reduces the extraction of materials from virgin resources, saves landfill space and saves money. •Design with adequate space to facilitate recycling collection and to incorporate a solid waste management program that prevents waste generation
