Defensive walls are one of the ancient landmarks that were very common in historical cities. They were utilized to encircle and defend the city from enemies. The main concept of the project is taken from the historical Riyadh wall. I choose this to remind us of the old history of Riyadh and how it changed throughout time, becming the large city it is today. I picked the Salam Park site, as it is close to the old city. I started by splitting the old defensive wall into two independent separated volumes with a pathway between them. This pathway connects the urban area and Salam Park. Regarding the west volume, I shaped it to align with the inclinations in its west surrounding.

Merging the landscape with the park and the space between the crack-shaped buildings, allow for ease of entry into the space which increases its livability. The site itself includes vegetation which I merged with the park to encourage a stronger connection between both. This, along with the pathway strengthens the continuity aspect. Also, the in-between area provides a semi-enclosed atmosphere that connects to the outside and to the entrances, serving as a human center. Lastly, choosing a defensive wall as the main concept delivers an authentic feel.

The overlapped villa is in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia owned by a Korean consular family. It highlights and generates the Korean Hanoks in a contemporary approach that suits Riyadh’s climate and culture. The concept focuses on functionality as well as showing the consular’s country home. The form development has openings for natural sunlight and is closed by a combination of U and L shapes to create overlapped floors, which enhances shade on the ground floor. Moreover, the external space has sliding doors all over the courtyard area and a wood stylobate which is an essential level in every Hanok.

CONCEPT
This project is based on how the old city of Jeddah developed throughout the years. The concept has strongly expressed the journey of how people will feel the evolution between the old-city urban and the new urban development. Mainly the zones are divided into three parts, which are the public, semi-public, and private spaces. Starting with the journey, the first zone which is the compact urban and represents the old city with a contemporary sensation. Then we start moving to the transition space where we can notice the strong wind direction that creates the main pathway and connects the public and the semi-public spaces where the transition of the journey begins. Finally, moving on to a more arranged and quite-private area that represents the new development of the city.
