This is the largest expansion project in the history of the Canton Fair Complex, with a total construction area of about 560,000 square meters, equivalent to 78 standard football fields. After completion, the Canton Fair will cover an area of more than 1.62 million square meters, adding nearly 6,000 booths. Masterpiece in London stands cancelled

MCH Group has taken the decision to cancel the 2023 edition of Masterpiece London, which was due to take place from 28th June to 5th July. Escalating costs and a decline in the number of international exhibitors mean that the event is not commercially viable this year. Brexit has certainly had an impact on the fair. The number of international applications has fallen 58% since 2018. Jewellers in particular have been affected by the UK government’s abolition of VAT refunds for international customers in 2020. In addition, transport and build costs, impacting fair organisers and their exhibitors have risen sharply in the last two years and are expected to increase further in 2023. The decision to cancel the 2023 edition more than six months ahead of the event has been taken this early to minimise any impact. Masterpiece will be immediately repaying in full any deposits taken for the 2023 edition. Similarly, all contractual obligations with suppliers will be honoured. The brand and event itself continue to have a strong following with over 40,000 visitors attending in 2022.

Australia’s Convention Bureaux unanimously vote for change

On 31 Jan 2023, the Association of Australian Convention Bureaux (AACB) held a special general meeting of its members to vote on the future representation of Australia’s business events industry, and the result was unanimous. AACB’s members have supported a special resolution to establish a new well-resourced peak body, representative of the entire business events community across Australia, together with the Australian Convention Centres Group (ACCG) and the Exhibition and Events Association of Australasia (EEAA). AACB President, Michael Matthews said, “This outcome, in step with other leading bodies, is an important one for our industry and comes at a critical time to face future challenges and strive for growth towards 2030 targets together. A new industry peak with a sustainable business model will be able to achieve far more and have greater influence than the status quo of smaller under-resourced groups with competing priorities. “We will continue to value our united, connected, and vibrant convention bureau community. And with greater investment in research and advocacy, we will be able to better demonstrate the economic contribution and social impact of business events as the true trusted experts and representative ‘one voice’ of the industry.”
