BTM has announced the first details of IBTM World 2022 which will focus on ‘culture creation’ as the business events world adapts to a more disparate working environment post-pandemic.
The organisers say the event, which will take place at the Fira Barcelona from the 29th of November to the 1st of December, will bring together attendees to discover how modern business challenges are creating opportunities across the industry, and explore the convergence of events and business culture.
David Thompson, Event Director, IBTM World, comments: “Business events are back to fill the gap they left, but they have also stepped up to fill the new gap that’ s appeared: the place where business culture lives. This year, we ’ re looking at how the technology we are using, the experiences we are creating, and the destinations we are visiting create limitless cultures for businesses and incredible potential for events and deliver the opportunity for better business results.
As part of its focus on creating culture, IBTM World 2022 will include the introduction of IBTM Cultural Roadshows. Designed to showcase different cultural destinations around the world, the Roadshows will explore how destinations use their unique cultures to create huge potential for events.
IBTM World’s Knowledge Programme will focus on the event’ s core cultural theme and include session tracks on connections, business, careers, brands and experiences. IBTM Accelerate will showcase innovative ideas with a roster of speakers delivering inspirational short talks.
IBTM World’ s networking events will this year reflect the unique culture of different destinations, including the hugely popular Networking Hour on the show floor, Club Night, and the Welcome Reception on day one with food, live music and dancing.
Barbara Jamison-Woods, Head of Europe, Convention Bureau at London & Partners, comments:
“I am delighted that the theme for this year ’s IBTM World is ‘Culture Creation’ as we are really lucky in London to have a such a diverse and accessible cultural offering with the greatest number of free museums and art galleries in the world. We are really looking forward to exhibiting with our sustainable hotel, venue and DMC partners at IBTM World on the London Convention Bureau Stand. We will be running several ‘What’ s New’ and ‘How to Do London’ interactive presentations to not only inspire hosted buyers but to discuss how we and our partners can help them with practical and hands on support to fit all budgets and ROI objectives.
Grant Caplan, President at Procurigence, comments: “Our mission to use gatherings of all sorts for culture creation is more important than ever for our clients. Large corporations who may have fewer offices post-pandemic are looking for ways to maintain their unique culture, something that face-toface events can really help forge and maintain. Our mission for IBTM this year is to find great suppliers as always, as well as those who can help us deliver creative cultural experiences for our clients.
To free up time in buyers’ schedules to allow them to attend educational sessions and meetings over the course of the event, this year the Corporate Buyer Programme and the Association Programme will take place the day before the official start of the event, on Monday 28 November.
African Exhibition Industry Outlook: Unlocking Untapped Opportunities In Africa
The one-day workshop and seminar for the African Exhibition Industry Outlook will feature expert speakers from across Africa and the Middle East, including the multi-award-winning journalist and author Bruce Whitfield, whose keynote will draw on fascinating, truth-defying, and inspiring case studies of people and businesses that succeed against the odds.
Other industry panellists will present business opportunities in key African markets, business outlooks, incentive schemes for new entrants, and bilateral cross-border collaboration. Topics of discussion will include how convention bureaus support the industry in South Africa, the economic impact of exhibitions both globally and in Africa, a multinational view on investing in Africa and a presentation of the findings of UFI’s Global Barometer Study with a focus on Africa and the Middle East.
Naji El Haddad, Regional Director MEA at UFI, says: “Africa represents the next frontier for growth and development for the exhibitions industry. There is great potential for investing in, developing and bringing global events to Africa. It’ s particularly interesting to note the launch of geoadapted events that are being brought to Africa, which is a testament to the everincreasing confidence and opportunities available on the continent.
Whilst the pandemic directly affected the events industry, interesting mergers and acquisitions noted in the past two years include RX Global’ s acquisition of two specialized exhibitions; the Media 10 Design Joburg and the Coffee and Chocolate Expo®.
Additionally, dmg Events, with a footprint spanning 25 countries – acquired Addis Build at the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, with the goal to support growth across multiple industries in Ethiopia. Further, the African arm of Clarion Events announced a full rebrand under the name Vuka Group earlier this year to form an independent B-BBEE compliant company, adapted to the unique conditions of Africa.
“We are delighted to be hosting this UFI event at the Johannesburg Expo Centre to showcase the commercial opportunities that South Africa, with the rest of Africa, have to offer. Our nation is well positioned from all aspects to be a hub for global events”, adds Craig Newman, Group CEO at GL Events SA.
The workshop will be hosted on Tuesday, 13 September at the Johannesburg Expo Centre and is organised by UFI in collaboration with AAXO, hosted by GL Events, and supported by Johannesburg Tourism.
“South Africa remains the ideal ‘ gateway to Africa’ and is an appropriate base of operations from which economic connection to the rest of the continent can be formed and business developed thanks to its strong financial sector, sound infrastructure and competitive talent-pool,” concludes Devi Paulsen-Abbott, Chairperson of AAXO.

Over the last two decades since its launch, Neonyt has developed into the most important B2B community platform for fashion, sustainability and innovation. The international fashion business is big, as is the responsibility of the event as an order platform and trend spotter in the sustainability sector, and the interest in the brand around the world. Messe Frankfurt has recognised the potential of Neonyt as a beacon and pioneer, and plans to roll out the event internationally.
The next German edition of this B2B event will be held in Düsseldorf from 28 to 30 January 2023. Messe Frankfurt began investing in sustainable textiles and fashion at an early stage. There was already a rapidly expanding 'green' fashion market when the event now called Neonyt moved from France to Germany in 2012. At that time, environmentally friendly concepts were in demand and supported by the trade, buyers, the industry and political stakeholders. Together with designer brands, fashion producers, NGOs, established brands and newcomers, the forerunners of Neonyt, the Ethical Fashion Show Berlin and the Greenshowroom Berlin, were driving forces for a revolution in terms of value and system in the German capital. In 2019, the two events were merged under the new name, 'Neonyt'.
Today, Neonyt is the synonym for a fundamental process of transformation in the textile and fashion sector. The convenient position of Germany in the heart of Europe and, therefore, its excellent logistical circumstances have proved to be advantageous for Neonyt as the hub of the sustainable textile and fashion business. Neonyt will take place as a B2B event in Düsseldorf from January 2023. Additional satellite events around the world are also in planning. Messe Frankfurt is taking the first step in Germany in cooperation with Igedo Company, which means: Igedo has assumed immediate responsibility for the operative planning and implementation of Neonyt in Düsseldorf. Since being founded in 1949, Igedo has gathered an extraordinary degree of expertise in the fashion sector and, with its events in Düsseldorf, plays a firmly established role on the international order scene at least twice a year.
In future, Neonyt will be held as a licence event concurrently with the FASHN ROOMS in the fashion metropolis of Düsseldorf, thus making Neonyt part of a successful international combination of some 600 international brands. The strictly sustainable spectrum to be seen at Neonyt will be held alongside the Agencies & Premium Brands (Showroom Concept), Avantgarde, Design & Contemporary and Accessories & Shoes segments of Fashn Rooms. This will benefit not only exhibitors and trade visitors because Fashn Rooms in Düsseldorf is also renowned for its content-creator segment, which is in line with the community DNA of Neonyt and offers significant potential as a multiplier.
imm cologne takes the first step into its future: imm spring edition to be hosted in June 2023
For 2023, imm cologne is adapting its concept to the challenges of a transformed market and repositioning itself. The trade fair has been given a new schedule, which will see the international Interior Business Event host a new, one-off spring edition in 2023. “The imm cologne advisory board gave the concept proposed by Koelnmesse for the imm spring edition in June 2023 the green light unanimously. Our thanks go to the advisory board and in particular to the German industry, the retail sector and the purchasing associations for their support. This concept will ensure that imm cologne can take place again after a two-year break. The industry has given its backing to a strong interior design trade fair in Germany, the biggest market in Europe,” says Gerald Böse, Chief Executive Officer of Koelnmesse.
The imm cologne team presented its vision for a new concept at the start of June 2022. The new story for imm cologne will unfold in two steps. The first step will be the imm spring edition from 4 to 7 June 2023. “The spring edition is synonymous with a new beginning. imm cologne wants to use it to motivate and to show how it is experimenting with new ideas and leaving well-trodden paths behind,” explains Oliver Frese, Chief Operating Officer of Koelnmesse. “What's more, the event in June gives our partners planning certainty.” The second step will then follow in the summer of 2023. In close consultation with the industry and the associations involved in the event, the future dates for imm cologne and LivingKitchen will be set. The future vision for imm cologne conceives the interior event as more than just a key business platform.

IFA Berlin 2022 makes an Impressive Comeback
After a three-year break, IFA Berlin has made a strong return as the world’s top event for the consumer and home electronics industry from 2-6 September. Despite the lockdowns and other restrictions that continue to affect parts of Asia, exhibitors took up more than 80% of floor space at the Messe Berlin fairgrounds, with brands keenly taking up the opportunity to finally reconnect face-to-face with retailers, media and the public.
Overall attendance at IFA 2022 was strong as well, especially considering the ongoing travel restrictions in Asia. Just over 161,000 people came to IFA Berlin during the five days of the show; compared to pre-pandemic years, industry professionals and trade visitors made up a higher proportion of all attendees. Many exhibitors reported an unusually high number of business meetings taking place during the show. Despite global challenges like ongoing supply chain disruption and inflationary pressures, the exhibitors at IFA 2022 recorded a huge order volume. Martin Ecknig, the Chief Executive Officer of Messe Berlin said: “It’s been fantastic to see our halls packed once again. I’ ve had really positive feedback from all the global brands and retailers that I spoke to, and I’ m especially pleased that we recorded such large numbers of industry professionals and trade visitors attending IFA Berlin. We are on track for IFA to regain its full strength in 2023. ”
Sustainability was one of the biggest themes at this year ’s IFA in Berlin, alongside intelligent connectivity of devices and Smart Home solutions. This was also reflected in some of this year ’ s IFA Keynotes, with Hakan Bulgurlu, the Chief Executive Officer of Arçelik, issuing a passionate plea to the consumer and home electronics industry to collaborate and do its part to contain climate change and reduce pollution. Gwenaelle Avice-Huet, the Chief Strategy and Sustainability Officer of Schneider Electric, expanded on the theme, exploring how Smart Home devices can make our homes more sustainable.
Another big topic was intelligent connectivity and how it enables seamless experiences. Cristiano Amon, the Chief Executive Officer at Qualcomm, explored the huge potential of connected services and devices in the future. The sourcing show for OEMs and ODMs returned to the fairgrounds at Messe Berlin this year and attracted huge interest from industry professionals. The two-day innovation conference SHIFT Mobility 2022 was a great success. The convention brought together automotive companies like Volkswagen, Ford, BMW and Mercedes Benz, tech giants like AWS and Qualcomm, newcomers like Lilium, Pivt, Lexgo and Autobrains, alongisdetop researchers from places like the Fraunhofer Institute and the University of Toronto, plus very young startups.
CARAVAN SALON 2022 exceeds the expectations of all participating groups
With numerous new products and innovations, very good visitor numbers and an excellent atmosphere CARAVAN SALON DÜSSELDORF 2022 confirmed that caravanning as a form of holiday is absolutely in vogue. From 26 August to 4 September 2022, during the ten days of the trade fair, more than 235,000 caravanning fans from 72 countries informed themselves about the ranges of 736 exhibitors from 34 countries in 16 exhibition halls. Messe Düsseldorf and the Caravaning Industrie Verband e. V. (CIVD) were delighted about the great results.
“Despite a difficult economic environment we have succeeded in reaching out to visitors with extremely high interest in this form of holiday and concrete intentions to buy. Very striking was the excellent atmosphere during the entire duration of the fair, the connected passion for mobile leisure was noticeable at all times. Only CARAVAN SALON reflects the entire caravanning world with its great variety ” , summarized Erhard Wienkamp, Managing Director of Messe Düsseldorf.
He was also pleased with the fact that again more newcomers as well as many young families attended the caravanning fair. For these target groups the advice offered at the “StarterWelt” proved very helpfully; furthermore, the Special “Abenteuer Selbstausbau/Adventure DIY” organized for the first time was approved very well.
CIVD President Herrmann Pfaff , satisfied with the results of the 61st CARAVAN SALON, said : “After two years with pandemic-related restrictions we were finally able to meet again under relatively normal conditions in Düsseldorf in 2022. As expected, this opportunity was used by many people to gather information on the innovations and trends in the caravanning sector. And CARAVAN SALON again more than lived up to its reputation as the leading trade fair. The 61st edition was not only the biggest ever but also set standards in terms of the quality and variety of exhibited products and novelties. There has never been a larger selection of motorhomes, caravans and accessories on display. In addition, the fair has developed into an important dialogue platform where our industry maintains close exchange with decision makers in the political sphere and tourism because the economic and touristic potential of caravanning as a form of holiday is far from being exploited and needs to be promoted more. The CARAVAN SALON has always been not only a stage for new products but also an emotional meeting place both for caravanning fans and for newcomers. This aspect has become even more important in the current times because motorhomes and caravans embody freedom, individuality and dreams connecting people ” .
The 62nd CARAVAN SALON Düsseldorf will be held from 26 August to 3 September 2023.
Hong Kong Watch & Clock Fair and Salon de TE conclude on a high note
Jointly organised by the Hong Kong Trade Development Council (HKTDC), Hong Kong Watch Manufacturers Association Ltd and The Federation of Hong Kong Watch Trades & Industries Ltd, the physical shows of the 41st HKTDC Hong Kong Watch & Clock Fair and 10th Salon de TE held from 07 to 11 September, drew to a successful close. This year’s fairs adopted the new EXHIBITION+ hybrid model, attracting more than 6,200 industry buyers to visit the physical fairs and browse products online, as well as more than 25,000 public visitors to shop for exquisite timepieces. The online fairs will continue to run until 6 October. As of today, the HKTDC has already arranged more than 1,200 business meetings, enabling more global watch and clock traders to explore business opportunities through the fairs’ online platform.
HKTDC Deputy Executive Director Sophia Chong said: “Although numerous sectors around the world, including the watch and clock industry, have been hard hit by the pandemic, we are pleased to see that affordable luxury watches are a hot pick in the market, and that watches featuring innovative technologies and sustainable elements are part of the new fashion trend. This year, the two fairs showcased a wide range of trendy, high-quality products from notable brands. Exhibitors were also able to capitalise on retail opportunities driven by the recent disbursement of the government’ s consumption vouchers.”
The two fairs were open to the general public this year, with a lively buying atmosphere at the fairground. The onsite survey revealed that the per capita consumption of public visitors was HK$1,146. Mike Lam, Chief Operating Officer of Mira Watch International Ltd, said the traffic at the fair was very good. “The average per capita spending by customers at our booth is around HK$4,000-5,000. A mechanical sports watch priced at HK$10,000 has sold particularly well. We expect this year’s on-site sales turnover to reach HK$1 million.
This year’s fairs adopted EXHIBITION+, a brand-new exhibition model integrating online and offline trade show formats, extending face-to-face interactions from physical exhibitions to an online platform. To help overseas buyers maintain contact with exhibitors, the HKTDC mobilised its 50 global offices to invite international buyers to engage in business discussions with exhibitors via video conferencing. In addition, the HKTDC utilises its smart businessmatching platform, Click2Match, to generate AI-recommended leads for exhibitors and buyers until 18 September.
The platform also provides functions such as a meeting planner, instant messaging, video conferencing and file sharing to facilitate communication between buyers and exhibitors. Following a successful series of fairs over the summer, the HKTDC will hold the Hong Kong Electronics Fair (Autumn Edition), International ICT Expo, electronicAsia, Hong Kong International Lighting Fair (Autumn Edition) and Hong Kong International Outdoor and Tech Light Expo from 13 to 16 October, all of which will adopt the EXHIBITION+ hybrid model. The model’s round-the-clock services will boost the flexibility and effectiveness of business promotion for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) and offer benefits ranging from extended fair periods and expanded platforms to enhanced business opportunities.
The Geneva International Motor Show (GIMS) scheduled to take place in February has been cancelled for the fourth year running, the organisers said in a statement. The GIMS will be held exclusively in Qatar in 2023, the members of the Committee and the Foundation Board of the "Comité permanent du Salon international de l' automobile de Genève" decided at a meeting in Bern. The original plan was to hold GIMS 2023 in two editions, the first from 14 to 19 February 2023 at Palexpo in Geneva and the second – a world premiere – in November in Doha, Qatar.
"We have done everything possible to ensure that we could host GIMS 2023 in Geneva in February. The enhanced event format and project had been very well received. But in the end, the risks overweighed the opportunities," says Maurice Turettini, President of the foundation. They said they would focus instead on a complementary motor show, the Geneva International Motor Show Qatar, due to be held in Doha later in 2023.
"Due to the uncertainties in the global economy and geopolitics, as well as the risks related to the development of the pandemic, the organisers have decided to focus exclusively on the planning of the event in Doha in 2023," the organisers, the permanent committee of the Geneva International Motor Show (GIMS), said in a statement.
World premiere in Doha
The first edition of the Geneva International Motor Show Qatar will take place in November 2023 at the Doha Exhibition and Convention Center (DECC) as well as several other decentralised venues, and will offer many unique and spectacular driving experiences. "We are now fully focused on organising GIMS in Doha and look forward to confirming the dates and format of this ground-breaking event with our partners at Qatar Tourism shortly," concludes Sandro Mesquita. The Qatar event is scheduled to take place every two years.

Strong leadership, a culture of innovation and a focus on sustainability at ICC Sydney have contributed to increased event attendance and economic returns to the community during the 2022 financial year. International Convention Centre Sydney (ICC Sydney), managed by ASM Global, has reported that its event visitor attendance and visitor spend in the community have doubled since the
previous financial year following the release of its 2021/22 Annual Performance Review.
Australia ’ s premier convention, exhibition and entertainment venue welcomed over 470,000 visitors that delivered A$190 million in visitor expenditure across 300 events — up from 200,000 visitors and an economic contribution of A$80 million in FY2020/2021. Over the year, ICC Sydney held 300 events – 261 or 87% of those events were held in person, which included 31 events that were a hybrid of in person and online. The venue delivered the majority of in person events and welcomed most of the 470,000 plus people that attended them, between March to June 2022. Condensed largely into four months, the number of in person events was up significantly on the previous year when only 56% of events were held in person.
NSW Premier Dominic Perrottet said ICC Sydney was already contributing to a revitalised city centre while playing a role in attracting business and talent
back to Australia ’s leading global city. The earlier than expected return of international events and the changing values shift of clients and attendees towards sustainable venues and communities have also played a role in keeping strong levels of business flowing to ICC Sydney.
Between March and June, ICC Sydney delivered high impact, high volume events, including:
Ÿ A record-breaking INDO PACIFIC 2022 International Maritime
Exposition attracted over 25,000 visitor attendances to interact with
736 participating exhibitor companies from 23 countries, across an exhibition space 11% larger than the 2019 record. Ÿ The Smart Energy Conference and
Exhibition welcomed 3,800 in person attendees and over 90 exhibitors to the venue attracted national attendance and VIPs, including Australian Prime Minister
Anthony Albanese. Ÿ Tourism Australia ’s Australian
Tourism Exchange this year was the highest selling event in its series. Ÿ The International Conference on
Soil Mechanics and Geotechnical
Engineering held in May, welcomed 1,360 in person attendees, half of these were international delegates from 76 countries, plus another 500 people joined online. Ÿ Live entertainment events drew great numbers of visitors to the precinct including ICC Sydney ’s longest running event Guy Sebastian ’ s
T.R.U.T.H. Tour that attracted over 25,000 patrons to Aware Super
Theatre across five shows from late
April to early June.

Asia has always been and remains a major player in the global exhibitions market. And Asia can benefit from the reopening experience of other global regions. ”
Poh Chi Chuan, Executive Director, Exhibitions & Conferences, Singapore Tourism Board, said: “Singapore is pleased to host the inaugural Asia CEO Summit in 2022, and over the next two years. This affirms Singapore’s position as a leading global business and Meetings, Incentive, Conferences and Exhibitions (MICE) hub in Asia. We look forward to welcome regional government and key industry leaders to Singapore. We believe the robust and insightful discussions as well as exchanges will be valuable to help the regional industry recover and set it on a long-term trajectory of growth. ”
