Tarot Talk

H

ello again from Tarot Talk - a weekly column in which I introduce a Tarot card for the week and provide a little information about it. I hope you continue to enjoy this space.

This week's card is The Moon. The Moon brings many invisible things to the surface: secret motives, clandestine information, ancient hidden truths brought into the light. The Moon’s light is a reflection of the Sun so its light can be shadowy – things look different by moonlight and there may be a need to guard against illusions. It is easy to lose our way in the moonlight. Be careful not to let deceptions and false ideas lead you astray. There may be unforeseen changes and unexpected occurrences and you may be a need to confront your fears in some way. Sometimes the Moon is a signal that you are lost and wandering aimlessly. You must find your way back to your path and purpose. In terms of relationships, this card indicates that at this time in your love life things aren't clear. Your emotional path isn't an easy one right now and your feelings are fluctuating and changing like the phases of the moon. You are experiencing confusion and uncertainty . Trust your instincts and your intuition - solutions to questions or problems may come to you in your dreams so pay attention to them. More information about this card can be found on my Tarot Talk Facebook page https:// www.facebook.com/tarottalknz/ Tarot readings and tuition are available by appointment. Recovery with Irma O n a recent flight to Wellington I couldn't help but notice an advert featuring well-known Kiwi actress Antonia Prebble in the Air New Zealand magazine.

'Beer the Beautiful Truth' is an elaborate campaign brought to you by the Brewers Association of New Zealand, supported by members DB Breweries and Lion. I quote from their website; 'Naturally as brewers of New Zealand’s most loved beer brands we are passionate about beer and want to share this passion with New Zealanders by dispelling myths aroun our fine beverage. We are excited to uncover the truth about beer because the truth is a wonderful thing – it helps you make more informed decisions when consuming beer responsibly.' Brewers Association of NZ, here are some facts you forgot to add to your campaign... 85% of Kiwi's aged 16-64 had an alcoholic drink in the past year. 3 in 5 (61.6%) past-year drinkers consumed more than the recommended guidelines for a single drinking occasion at least once during the last year (Ministry of Health 2009). One in six (17.7%) adults (aged15+) have a potentially hazardous drinking pattern (Ministry of Health 2009). Alcohol consumption has been identified as an important risk factor for more than 60 different disorders (WHO 2007). An estimated 3.8% of all global deaths, that's 288.8 million people, are attributed to alcohol (Rehm et al 2009). In NZ estimates indicate between 600 and 1000 people die each year from alcohol related causes (Berl 2009; Connor et al

2005). 14% of the population are predicted to meet criteria for substance use disorder at some stage in their lives (Wells et al 2007). The NZ police estimate that approximately one third of all apprehensions involve alcohol and that half of all serious crimes are related to alcohol. In 2008 alcohol was a contributing factor in 103 fatal crashes, 441 serious injury crashes and 1156 minor crashes (Ministry of Transport 2009). These crashes resulted in 119 deaths, 582 serious injuries and 1726 minor injuries. Harmful alcohol use cost NZ $4.9billion in 05/06. This campaign is sending all the wrong messages. UGLY TRUTH: Alcohol is one of the most harmful and toxic substances known to man and yet it is legal and socially acceptable. Everywhere we turn we're constantly targeted by boozy marketing and advertising campaigns and the message is clear - alcohol equals pleasure and good times. The supermarket has now bypassed the bottle store. Our biggest 'drug-dealers' are disguised as friendly grocers. I think this illustrates the state of our cultural derangement. Can we just stop for a moment and use our common sense? And the fact that most of the campaigns target women saddens me even more. Alcohol destroys our health, relationships, families, communities, economy and lives. Antonia Prebble I'm a huge fan, but girl!? This is mainstream madness. Irma.

New Zealand’s biggest kite event soars in Raglan

A

balmy Saturday with minimal wind didn’t put off Raglan Kite Jam entrants from getting into the spirit of the competition. The headline race The Downwinder had competitors race 3kms downwind from the kite beach at Riria Kereopa Memorial Drive to the Yot Club, downing a pint of beer and finishing the circuit at Ozone headquarters in Volcom Lane. Ozone New Zealand owner and organizer, Matt Taggart, says despite the less than ideal weather conditions the contestants had a great weekend in Raglan and Friday’s practise day was pumping with action. “I had one of the best sessions I’ve ever had in Raglan on Friday.” The event started life four years ago as a community fundraiser to raise money for a Raglan kiteboarder and solo father who lost his home to a house fire. “The Raglan Kite Jam has always been about organising a fun yet relaxed event for the kiteboarding community, whilst raising funds for good causes,” Matt says.

The Raglan Coastguard service were recipients of $1350 raised this year and they were at the event on Saturday sizzling sausages for a gold coin donation. “The Raglan Coastguard are an amazing bunch of guys and they do a great job supporting water sports and boaties in Raglan.” Attracting its largest pool of entries with 135 kiteboarders aged from 12 to 70, New Zealand’s biggest kite event has become “the premier event” for the kiteboarding community, Matt says. “We were blown away with the entry field response. The last big event I attended was the Nationals in Foxton and there were about 120 competitors there.” Matt and co-organisers, Morgan Coster and Stefano Gigli, have set their sights on growing the event to be a nationwide kite jam. Matt says the continued popularity of kiteboarding has seen the sport added to the Youth Olympics and it signs are pointing towards the International Olympic Committee adding male and female categories in the 2024 games.

The first Youth Olympic Games is October 2018 in Argentina. Ozone NZ plan to develop a Raglan Kite racing youth programme with the aim to have Raglan youth ready to qualify for the next Youth Olympic Games in 2022. THE ANZACS Museum president ‘really feels’ loss of family in World War 1

A

nzac Day will be particularly poignant for Raglan museum president Ken Soanes this year as he remembers a great uncle who died of war wounds on the other side of the world 100 years ago to the day.

“Every man has a story,” Ken observes as the Chronicle delves into a few of them. Farmhand Kenneth Aubrey Moon was also one of the 10 who died in 1918 and whose name is inscribed, like those of his fallen Raglan district comrades, on the war memorial cenotaph downtown. He died on active service during the Ramleh War in Palestine. Quite a few from Raglan went to Palestine where they fought in battles as fierce but lesser known than Gallipoli, says Ken. Other 1918 victims of the war who have descendants still in the district include Patrick Pierce Phelan, who died in France and is related to the Shea family, and Francis Arthur Vercoe who died that year on his return from battle. Benjamin Charles Vernon was another who died of his wounds in France in 1918, having been at a mounted rifles training camp five years earlier along with other Raglan soldiers. Then there’s the story of Alfred Lawrence Galvan, who worked for his father Richard in the original blacksmiths in Cliff Street. Alfred also operated the launch ‘Harmony’ on Whaingaroa harbour, and his family tried to prevent him from going to war. But he was forced to enlist in 2017 only to die of pneumonia while in training in New Zealand the following year. “There’s all sorts of stories … and court cases ... about people getting caught in the ballot,” Ken reveals. Four other locals are listed among 1918’s war casualties: Hugh Saunders Pain, Henry Lionel Coate, Gordon Dodderidge Ferriman and Henry William Phillips.

Arthur William Watkins was one of 10 soldiers from Raglan to die in 1918, the last year of World War 1. All up, 29 of the 154 men from the district who served in the fouryear war did not survive. A sawmiller from Te Uku, Arthur was a stretcher-bearer on the front line, Ken told the Chronicle. After being wounded he was sent to England where he died on what is now Anzac Day, April 25. In Ken’s collection of photos sent home by his great-uncle while on active service in France and Belgium, there’s one with a message that reads: “Put this aside for me when I get back.” It’s a very emotional family connection, Ken admits. “I really feel it on Anzac Day.” There’s also a second link, as it has turned out. Through his work on the museum’s ‘Raglan Remembers World War One’ exhibition, Ken has recently discovered he had a second great-uncle here, Malcolm Mackinnon, who also died in the war. Research reveals he was the first teacher at Waitetuna School. The permanent World War One exhibition includes not only a wall display and comprehensive touchscreen catalogue – with links to the Auckland Cenotaph – but also a ring-binder folder of local soldiers’ personal stories as supplied by their descendants.

Ken in a corner of the museum with the folder of soldiers' stories, touchscreen catalogue and wartime memorabilia.

A 20-minute series of interviews with descendants of some of those from Raglan who fought in the war is also set up on computer on the museum’s mezzanine floor and makes for quite moving viewing, Ken says. The series includes footage from longtime Raglan families who are still here today – like the Wallises, Sweetmans, Gibbisons and Pearts. The wall display itself starts with a timeline showing where New Zealand and particularly Raglan soldiers were involved overseas.

It includes some interesting lesser known facts, Ken says, such as that the first Kiwi to serve in the war was from the Raglan district. He was Captain Herbert Ambrose Cooper, a Waitetuna farmer who joined the Royal Flying Corps in England. Other sections of the exhibition reveal how a patriotic community back in Raglan raised in 1918 the equivalent of $70,000 for the NZ Red Cross through just one day’s fundraising in the local town hall, and how hundreds of horses were sent from Raglan to be used in the war effort. I Remember

I

remember arriving at Gallipoli, fresh off the barge ready to do some damage but instead having to watch the other blokes get shot and never having a chance to see their families again. How bullets the size of hailstones rained down on us wreaking havoc and fear in their wake. How the trenches were like literal hell on earth and almost every second an unlucky chap would get shot, hit by shrapnel or die from hyperthermia. How the sounds of the screams of agony almost drove me for a loop. I can still remember how angry I was that we had been lied to, that it wasn’t an adventure

it was torture. It was supposed to be an opportunity to see the world, but you can’t see anything past the sandbags lining the top of the trench because if you dared to even peek across no mans land you would likely be shot through the brains by an awaiting sniper. I close my eyes and re open them, but still nothing has changed. I remember: The trenches and what horrible conditions I had to live in. Lice coating the peeling skin of almost all the men. Mosquitoes, fleas, flies and any other creature that benefited from living in those hell holes with us. The rats were the worst of all. How they nibbled at your blackening feet and ate away at your food that you had so little of. Me and the other blokes used

to kill them and hang them like trophies since that was one of the only things to do besides get killed ourselves. I remember having to sleep in thick black mud filled with faeces and the corpses of those who fought alongside you. How every day we waited for a letter from home explaining how everyone misses you and having to lie to them about everything. Never being able to share information because of the fear that the letter may be intercepted and handed to the enemy side where they could use it against you. I try to shake the memories from my mind but no matter how hard I try they all still remain. I remember: the cries of pain and terror, the feeling of loneliness, the pit in your

stomach, the rapid machine gun fire ripping through the rotting flesh of unsuspecting soldiers, awaiting death, the barbwire catching the laces of your grubby and worn down boots, the gangrene, the trench foot, knowing that at any moment you could be the next one to drop dead, thinking you’ll never see your family again and …..this is all just the shellshock. I’ve been home for just over a month and every day I am forced to relive this never-ending nightmare. The war is over but not in my mind. There is still a battle for what is reality and what is just memories. A tear runs down my cheek I know its all entirely in my head.

0.11.18. Starved. I realized I had been staring into mid air for a while now. I struggle to sit up, clearing my head. I grab a plank and pull myself to my feet and carry myself in agony over to an old table, standing to where I had dozed. Below me, ankle deep mud, I felt as though it was trying to pull me down and swallow me. I grab my food tin and head for Johnson who was puffing his pipe, leaning against the dirty trench wall. I pull out my pipe from under my ammunition belt, “Here Yeatman,” Johnson offered to light it. We stood there puffing our pipes. We were interrupted by a sudden blast.

8 RAGLAN Chronicle

Ears ringing. I was blind of what was happening around me. The enemies had attacked again, this time with a bomb. I look to my right and find Johnson lying on the bloodied ground next to me. Dread filled up inside me. I thought to go over there and help him but it was too dangerous. Men were shouting to stay down low and to get ready to put our gas masks on to prevent any attempt of the Turks trying to use mustard gas on us. Some men had stopped listening and ran straight out only to be destroyed by a sniper. Shaking, I grab my gas mask and helmet and place both of them on my head. I crawl over to the edge of the wall and take my rifle, attaching my bayonet to

the end of it. I didn’t know what else to do. Silence fell upon the trench. Have they stopped bombing? Have they surrendered? All that could be heard now was the distant noise of men screaming from their wounds, while trying to gasp for the last of air. Without thinking I crawl to Johnson. Dead? The word seemed to be stuck in my head. I closed his eyes while noticing he wasn’t breathing. My arm started burning. Shrapnel. The adrenaline in my body had finally slowed and now my arm felt as though it could drop off. I cringed at the sight. Blood was now streaming out. “Don’t stress mate, we will have you fixed up in no time,” Morrison exclaimed trudging over. It could

have been worse. I lay back and let myself rest. I will live another day. 11.11.18 Its

I get to travel home and once again see my dear wife and beloved children. I will always treasure the memories of my comrades whom I fought side by side with. Lest we forget. Syd Yeatman. Repco new addition to Raglan Engineering hub

S

ituated on a piece of land that has a lot of local history, over the years Raglan Engineering has developed into a mechanical hub and is now adding a mini Repco store and a small motor servicing area to their list of offerings.

motors such as lawn mowers, chainsaws, weedeaters and ride-ons (small motor service area set to open early 2015). While the Repco store will carry nowhere near the range that city stores provide, the product range has been specifically tailored for the Raglan Market. From servicing vehicles to engineering supplies and services like welding and grinding to providing the farming community with tractor 3-point linkage accessories, Peter’s hope is that Raglan Engineering can now provide a wide-range of mechanical and engineering services to the community. With some changes and developments afoot, next year will mark Peter’s 40th year working at 2 Park Drive and can say that the business is now a bit of a family affair. Peter’s son Matt is helping out again in the workshop after an 18-month stint in Canada and with eight years experience working for Beaurepaires in Melbourne he has plenty of his own experience under his belt. Matt’s older brother Stephen, who lives in Auckland, also helps out putting his management degree to good use assisting Peter with the finer details of procedures, stock control and general running systems. “Many thanks to them,” says Peter as he looks ahead to the next step for Raglan Engineering. So while you’re getting a WOF or service, your lawn mower handle welded or a new front steel gate made, check out the new mini Repco reseller store at Raglan Engineering No. 2 Park Drive. There are some great products coming in this week, including Christmas stocking fillers too! Maki Nishiyama

FOR RAGLAN’S LARGEST RANGE OF 4WD AND CAR TYRES SEE :

The site at number two Park Drive was previously owned by the Hartstone family with the original workshop built in the 1940’s. Peter Williams, a long-time worker at the workshop, took over in 2000 starting what is now Raglan Engineering. Over the last decade or so the area has developed into a mechanical hub with the addition of Williams Tyre and Mechanical, Park Drive Panel Beaters and other businesses. “I was nervous as hell when I was about to take everything over but everything worked out and over the last 14 years I’ve had many great tenants,” says Peter. The recent relocation of Raglan-based Aeronavics saw a space open up at Park Drive for a new venture. “It’s something that was talked about for a long time but up to six weeks ago we had nowhere to put it,” says Peter on the addition of the mini Repco and small motor servicing side of the business. For the past few years, Aeronavics who have relocated their main offices to a different site in Te Uku - were leasing the shed space and with their departure a decision had to be made: “find a new tenant or use the vacant space for ourselves.” After a few meeting and inquiries, it was decided that a retail space would be put in with a mini Repco reseller store as well as a separate space for servicing small

finished in the early 1950s, once more saccharin was banned for use in processed foods. Aspartame was discovered in 1965. It is 200 times sweeter than sugar and is relatively cheap to make. However, it only has a shelf life of about six months and is not suitable for cooking. It was thought to cause brain tumours, although scientists throughout the world could not agree on its toxicity. In 2002 a sweeter and “safer version” of Aspartame was developed called ‘Neotame’. Thousands of times sweeter than other artificial sweeteners the amount used to sweeten a bottle of soda is minuscule. In 1977 when the U.S. tried to ban artificial sweeteners, food companies started stock piling Saccharin and eventually public opinion overturned the ban. However, more rigorous testing and saccharin was once more banned in the States and was not lifted until 2000. Meanwhile, the European Commission decided to ban all artificial sweeteners in bakery products! It was thought that chemical sweeteners tended to increase the desire for sweet food and those most at risk of weight gain tend to eat more. And so the debate continues and on April 6 2018, in a bid to reduce rising levels of obesity, the UK introduced a tax on sugary soft drinks.

Although none-the-worse for his saccharin consumption for over twenty years, I am sure if my Grandfather had known about Stevia he would have certainly grown it in his greenhouse along with his tobacco and tomatoes! Pauline Abrahams

Kiwis Against Seabed Mining (KASM), with Greenpeace, is appealing the decision, alongside six other appellants (see notes below for full list). The EPA decision was released in August 2017, a year after Trans-Tasman Resources submitted its application to dig up 50 million tonnes of the seabed a year in a 66 square kilometre section of the South Taranaki Bight – for 35 years. A total of 95% will be discharged, resulting in a large sediment plume, to get five million tonnes a year of iron ore. Of the 13,733 submissions (a record) received by the EPA, all but 147 – one percent – were either opposed to the consent or neutral. “This is a fight for the future of our precious oceans,” said KASM chair Cindy Baxter. “The outcome of this case will set a precedent for a number of other companies waiting in the wings to mine our seabed, in the South Taranaki Bight and beyond. TransTasman has prospecting permits for at least two more in the Bight, and two others around the country.”

“Our Oceans are in distress, and are facing a crisis of marine biodiversity loss. Our oceans provide us vital services, food and livelihoods, as well as oxygen and carbon sequestration when we have healthy ecosystems,” said Michael Smith, a campaigner with Greenpeace New Zealand. “The South Taranaki Bight is one such vital ecosystem, home to a population of endangered blue whales and Maui dolphins. Protecting its biodiversity is why this case is so important..” KASM and Greenpeace are appealing on 12 points of law. Among these is the issue of what is called “adaptive management” whereby an activity like seabed mining is allowed to go ahead, adapting the conditions on which it occurs along the way. “The EPA has set down 109 conditions, but many are still to be developed, such as the effect of seabed mining on marine mammals and seabirds,” said Cindy Baxter. “We are also raising other issues, such as natural justice, the way economic benefits have been calculated, and the role of the precautionary approach.” The hearing began at the High Court in Wellington, 10 am, Monday 16 April 2018 and lasted for four days. 102b Greenslade Road

Darryl has been selling real estate for 19 years and has been involved in close to 800 property transactions. Darryl has been coming to Raglan to surf since he was 14 and instantly fell in love with the place and the lifestyle it offers. Moving fulltime to Raglan three years ago has fuelled an interest in the Raglan market. Darryl is keen to use his knowledge, experience and integrity to make people’s real estate goals become a reality. Darryl is on the executive committee for the Raglan Club and an active member of the Raglan Bowls and Golf Clubs. Community focus is a must in a small town and Darryl’s values enhance this.
