ecord numbers donned their lycra and hit the road for the Karioi Classic, with close to 400 cyclists pedalling the mountain in the popular winter cycling event. For the youngest rider 10-year-old Raglan Area School student Jack Meek, the seed for entering the event was planted by his father Phillip – a veteran of three rides. Taking Wednesdays off school to train was also an incentive and he was hoping the training would pay off with a good finish time. “I hope to do it in three-hours,” he said. Getting ready to tackle the 43km ride with dad, and mum Emily as support crew, Jack was looking forward to the finish line but says his biggest challenge will be the hills. “We are here to support Jack and for us it’s not about winning but giving it a go,” Phillip said. Emily has also ridden the classic a few years back and hoped working out at Raglan Ragbo spin classes would help her in the ride. Event co-organiser Lisa Thomson says entrants come back year-after-year and many appreciate the sense of community and whanaungatanga at the event. “Our timekeeper, Richard from MyTime, has been coming here for nine years and he says this is a highlight event for him and they do many significant events.” Despite the spot of rain and hail, Lisa says all but five riders completed the ride.

“Dirk and I made the call to pull any slow riders out. Once people are tired they make really bad decisions. We have really good mechanisms in place for safety and our ambulance crew were ready to move to wherever we needed them to be.” The three different distance events - The Classic 43km, The Classic XL 57k, The Enduro 85km – offered riding options for cyclists of all ages and fitness levels. arking at the Raglan wharf will once again come under pressure during the peak holiday season, with shoppers, boaties, locals and tourists all competing for prime position. Raglan Sportfishing Club president Ken Barry and The Wharf Kitchen and Bar owner Helen Rowling are concerned that while the Waikato District Council sends time consulting with the community over a long-term solution, there is no consideration for a short-term fix-it to alleviate congestion in the coming summer months. The increase in the fishing population using the wharf, Ken says, has been exacerbated by issues with the 2016 Manu Bay break wall rebuild not providing

adequate protection with boaties opting to use the safer wharf option to launch their boats. Added to the wharf parking woes are the Wallis St boardwalk repairs that have been held up due to resource consent issues. Paid and time-limit parking is one option being explored by the Raglan Community Board but Ken feels this will increase congestion at the wharf as boats line up waiting to launch. “We believe the status quo should stand with mulit-use of the boardwalk and area opposite the cliff on Wallis St on a first come first served basis, and 48-hour parking for overnighting vessels. When the carpark is full all boaties and visitors to the wharf will have to walk.” A park and ride service doing a loop from the Raglan Rugby Club to the library

and out to the wharf is a solution he would like to see happening as soon as this summer, with visitors and boaties directed to the rugby carpark. Helen agrees with the park and ride option but believes there needs to be some time-limit parking at the wharf to get some of the visiting vehicles moving and not sitting in carparks all day. They both agree that wharf parking is at crisis point and how the town is perceived to be dealing with this issue impacts on visitors’ perceptions and overall experience of Raglan. “We don’t want to stop Raglan’s momentum just because we can’t get the parking sorted. We want our visitors to see that we are actively doing something to solve our parking problems,” she says. Janine Jackson

at the Hold on to your Hats Steampunk Exhibition at Rivet Gallery from August 3-5. The exhibition showcases local wearable arts aficionado Lis Hosking’s fanciful creations based around the fusion of old steam-powered technologies of the Victoriana era and hi-tech future sci-fi. Liz’s first steampunk outing was at the 2017 New Year’s Parade and she is looking forward to the opportunity to share her love of the hybrid. “You can pretty much do anything with it.” The former set designer describes her take on steampunk as apocalyptic, channelling her all-time favourite movie Mad Max in the exquisite hats, goggles, weaponry and clothing items she creates. “I’ve worked on perfecting the paint technique for a year now to get different metal effects,” she says. The self-confessed perfectionist says most of the bits and pieces that go into creating her pieces are 90 percent upcycled with much of it coming from Kaahu’s Nest at Xtreme Zero Waste. “I can spend ages staring at the work, adding a little bit here and a little bit there.” Rivet Gallery owner Wendy Lemmon enjoys bringing old machine-aged designs

The pair say opening night - August 3

from 5-8pm - will be fun for all the family with teapot racing and a best dressed competition with judging at 7pm. Everything in the exhibition will be for sale and Liz’s steampunk creations will still be available at Rivet after the exhibition has closed. of Raglan Community Patients Medical Centre will need to go elsewhere to see a doctor when the marae-based facility pares

down its services at the middle of this month. From Monday August 13 patients must opt either to travel into Te Kohao Health

in Hamilton East – of which the Raglan centre has operated as a satellite clinic – or to enrol and make appointments with West Coast Health Clinic in Wallis Street for their ongoing medical care. Currently the clinic at Poihakena Marae is staffed by Te Kohao Health GPs on Mondays and Wednesdays. The ongoing difficulties staffing the Raglan clinic were outlined this week in a letter sent to all Raglan patients by the Hamilton organisation’s practice manager, Linda Elgar. “Our aim has always been to provide a Kaupapa Maori Health service offering optimal quality of care to all whanau who enrolled with the GP service,” she wrote. “One that provides a full time doctor working out of the clinic for at least five days per week. “Unfortunately we have not been able to attract a full time doctor to Raglan and therefore have been utilising our current doctors who are based in Hamilton. “Combined with stretching our current resources and the financial constraints from this, this proved to be a challenge and ultimately impacts on whanau wanting high quality and continuity of care.” Te Kohao Health managing director Tureiti Moxon told the Chronicle the Raglan service had been “financially unviable” for a long time. “We want to give the best possible service but it’s been a bit hit-and-miss (in Raglan),” she said. What was really needed was a doctor living within the Whaingaroa community and working from the satellite clinic. This goal had actually become a reality for a very short time some years back – when a South African doctor was recruited to Raglan – but since her departure it had been a case of “soldiering on regardless”. Tureiti Moxon said it was also unfortunate the Raglan Community Medical Centre hadn’t had enough patients coming

Housing survey: Why do we all need to fill this in?

whaingaroa raglan

T

affordable housing project

his morning there was another desperate plea on Raglan Noticeboard for a place to rent. The house this family are in is suddenly up for sale. They are great tenants, run their own small online business and have employers in town who would be devastated to lose them. After living in Raglan for 20 years, if they can’t find anywhere to live they will have to move out of town or split the family up leaving the Dad living in his van to carry on working and commute to see each other. This is just one of many heart wrenching pleas that appear on the Noticeboard almost on a weekly basis. Property prices too high for people on an average income to buy, the cost of rent rising, and the loss of rental housing stock are all factors. On the other hand, landlords looking to get into the rental market even with a decent deposit, can no longer make the numbers work, the gap between mortgage payments, rising rates, maintenance and rent income is too big when the median house price for Raglan

is $660,000 and rising. As a community, do we stand and watch this happen or do we try to do something about it? It’s a big issue and it needs some creative solutions and serious investment. We don’t know what the solutions could be so we have to start with finding how big the problem is. Then we need to find what an affordable solution looks like for those who need a place to live, and then go out and find the money to create that. Early discussions with central government and our local District Council look really promising but they need numbers and facts and figures so they can understand exactly what it is we need, and then start talking money and solutions. Bob MacLeod, Chairperson for the Raglan Community Board says that “The Community Board fully supports this survey. It will give us essential data that we can feed into Raglan Naturally (the community plan), and use to influence District Council understanding of our community priorities”.

WRAP The housing survey gives us a one shot chance to find out what proportion of our community is really struggling with the cost of housing or finding a place to live. How many people are having to live in a crowded house or in a sleep-out, how many are choosing to go tiny because there’s no hope of buying or renting something bigger, how many people are feeling stressed about their housing situation and how stressed they are (not much? Or so much that it’s affecting their health?). So, if you saw the article in last week’s Chronicle about a housing survey and you’re thinking, “why do we need one?” or “why should I fill that in?”, then maybe pause and think again. If you aren’t struggling with a housing issue, you are still part of the story. If we all fill it in, we will have a powerful story to tell those who have the means to help us. If we don’t, we are just standing and watching as people who may have called Raglan home for decades have to pack up and leave town. WRAP

through its doors to warrant a full time doctor, adding “it breaks my heart to pull out”. But the withdrawal of a GP service was not the end of everything, she emphasised. “We are keeping (some) services out there … and working closely with the marae.” Among those services will be a whanau ora navigator or iwi health worker to support families with high needs in – for instance – health, housing or education. And there will be an integrated attendance service working in with Raglan Area School staff. Also a weekly kaumatua leadership programme for the elderly will continue with local kaumatua Sean Ellison, who has been right behind the initiative between Poihakena Marae and Te Kohao Health since its inception in 2012. The Raglan centre is dedicated to the memory of his late father Tom Ellison, a local GP who served the community for 45 years. It was a longheld dream of Dr Tom’s – as he was widely known – to create a marae-based clinic in Raglan similar to that in Hamilton East where he also worked as a locum. Sean told the Chronicle it was “disappointing” to lose the GP service at the community medical centre because of unviability. Patient numbers weren’t going to increase “with no full time doctor on”. He was sceptical of suggestions that virtual consultations – with a nurse based at the local clinic while ‘zooming in’ on screen to a doctor in Hamilton East – could be a way forward, given that “a lot of our (computer-illiterate) people” might well find this modern technological approach unsatisfactory. Edith Symes

Introduction to Essential Oils

rankincense, F often referred to as “the king

of oils”, offers a variety of health benefits, including helping relieve chronic stress and anxiety, reducing pain and inflammation, and boosting immunity.

When inhaled, frankincense oil been shown to reduce heart rate and high blood pressure. It has anti-anxiety and depression-reducing abilities, but unlike prescription medications, it does not have negative side effects or cause unwanted drowsiness. Frankincense is an antiseptic and disinfectant agent that has antimicrobial effects. It has the ability to eliminate cold and flu germs from the home and the body naturally, and it can be used in place of chemical household cleaners to help reduce yours and your family’s toxic overload. Frankincense has the ability to strengthen skin and improve its tone, elasticity, defence mechanisms against bacteria or blemishes, and appearance as someone ages. It may help tone and lift skin, reduce the appearance of scars and acne, and heals wounds. I will be holding regular classes on essential oils and toxic free living every Tuesday at 10am and Wednesday at 7pm. Please email huntandgathernz@gmail.com or text 0223543812 for more information.

Chasing the sun!

MASSAGE Diane Davies Massage & Aromatherapy....021 969 929 web:................................................www.ddma.co.nz

Make sure you protect yourself from the sun on your tropical holiday.

I

f you are going away on a winter holiday this year chasing the sun, think about preventative and natural treatments so you don’t get sick while away or when you get home. We often see people getting sick from long flights or from gastrointestinal infections which are prevalent in various islands.

Taking a good quality, high dose vitamin C and Echinacea for about a week before you go until a week after you get home, can help boost immunity. A good probiotic helps to establish an army of beneficial bacteria in the gut in case of an attack from undesirable bacteria. There is a specific strain of probiotic that can help to prevent (and treat) traveller’s diarrhoea. It is called Saccharomyces

cerevisiae (boulardii), or more simply, “S.B.”! We have a shelf stable option in store that is perfect for travelling. Wild oregano oil is an antimicrobial supplement that fends off undesirable bugs. Activated charcoal absorbs impurities in the system. If you can’t get away to a sunny destination this winter, consider taking a vitamin D supplement. Vitamin D is otherwise known as “the sunshine vitamin” and our stores can get low in winter, resulting in lowered mood and immunity. An ideal dose is 1000iu per kg of bodyweight per day. Food sources of vitamin D include oily fish, liver, eggs and organic dairy products, or you may choose to supplement. For more options or information, come and see our Naturopaths at The Herbal Dispensary. The Herbal Dispensary, Ph. 07 825 7444.

RAGLAN JUNIOR SOCCER RESULTS // 28 JULY

his week we spoke to the Whale Tails co-manager, Charlotte Hartstone. Who are you manager for and what grade are they? I co-manage the U8 Girls Whale Tails with Liz Hoskings. Have you been a manager before? Yes – all three of my girls have played soccer for the Raglan club over the years and I’ve been a manager every year since my oldest started playing six years ago. What’s involved for you as a manager? My main roles are keeping the team informed about where they are playing each week, making sure the game scores and player of the day results are sent through each week and supporting our awesome coach where ever possible. Why did you volunteer? I don’t know the first thing about coaching soccer, so it’s nice to be able to help out in other ways. Also, two of my girls are in the Whale Tails this year, so I’m going to be at soccer every week supporting them anyway – I might as well be useful.

Luckily my husband Brady can usually help out on days when we have both home and away games. Failing that, my mum and dad or friends come to the rescue. Any shout outs to others who support the team? How do you find the role? I’m very lucky that we have a great bunch of girls that are excited to play each week, so they make my job easy. Communication within the team is simple using our own private Facebook group – it really only takes a few minutes to do my job each week. Don’t be afraid to take on the role of a team manager, it’s not as scary as it sounds. How crazy are Saturday soccer days

welve 9th grade kids turn up to practice each week with enthusiasm and passion and never let us down. We have only won one game but they are the smallest by far. If they were 20kgs heavier and 7inches taller they’d win them all! But they have fun and never give up. I've seen a massive improvement and am so proud of them all. The majority of the team is playing a year above in age and weight. Tommy - 9th grade coach

Agricultural Days are an historical and valued annual tradition for rural families, their schools and communities, and we know the essential qualities it develops in our children. The arrival of Mycoplasma bovis has made us assess not only the logistics of managing biosecurity for Agricultural Day, but also the safety of the animals. After discussing all the information available to us, as a collective we agreed that our schools will NOT be holding Agricultural Day for 2018, but rather postpone it to 2019. Group Day will also be postponed until 2019. We understand this may be disappointing for some families. This decision was not made lightly. The best interests of our communities are paramount. Consideration was given to the wellbeing of the animals, the biosecurity for our local farming communities and the industry as a whole. Students can still enter a lamb or goat into the Waikato A&P show individually. We intend to keep researching best practise health and safety measures for Agricultural Day and return to these annual events in 2019. Raglan Area School, Te Uku School, Te Mata School and Waitetuna School.

Adoption of Waikato District Council Fees and Charges At its meeting held on 22 May 2018, Waikato District Council adopted the Fees and Charges 2018 to 2021. The new fees and charges will come into effect on 1 July 2018.
