Mushroom growing venture is percolating in Raglan

Mushroom growers from left, Niels Kolmer and Vanessa Macdonald.

A

start-up business in Raglan is taking used coffee grounds and turning them into mushrooms. Called Champignons (French for mushrooms), the venture is the brainchild of Niels Kolmer and Vanessa Macdonald, who have combined their passion for food and circular economies to grow flamingo mushrooms for high-end restaurants and individuals looking for a healthy diet. The business partners, both originally from France, are hoping to ebb the flow of ever-increasing coffee grounds ending up in landfills by using this café waste to grow the brightly-coloured fungi native to the tropics and Indonesia. Niels and Vanessa shared their favourite way to eat the mushrooms and treated the

Chronicle to a tasting during the interview - fried in olive oil until caramelised with the addition of garlic, salt and pepper to taste, the flamingo mushrooms were full of flavour with a great texture. Niels, a materials science engineer, has been testing the mushrooms in different growing conditions under his house in Raglan West and is determined to grow ‘clean’ produce. “Edible mushrooms are intrinsically healthy and have incredible medicinal properties. But people need to know that when grown on a polluted material they act as sponges soaking up toxic metals in high amounts. And unfortunately it’s almost impossible to know on what soil the mushroom you are eating has been grown. We wish to change that.” Pasteurised by the hot water during the

coffee-making process, Vanessa, a former veterinarian, says the coffee grounds are the ideal material for growing the flamingos and, contrary to popular belief, are not great for putting straight onto the garden. “Where coffee is grown you won’t see other plants growing because it is the caffeine’s role to suppress the germination of other seeds.” The pair have been in discussion with Xtreme Zero Waste about the venture and say what they are doing fits nicely with XZW philosophy. The by-product of the sustainable mushroom farm – myceliumcolonised coffee grounds - could feed XZW composting operation in the near future. From repurposing the coffee grounds as growing material for the mushrooms to opting for reusable plastic growing tubs, Niels and Vanessa say their business model is all about creating a circular economy with a tasty and healthy morsel as an end product. Keeping it as sustainable and local as possible, they source their mushroom mycelium from Lennart Prinz of Prinz Mushrooms and once the venture is in full swing, they hope to recycle up to half of the coffee grounds in Raglan, with the support from cafés and restaurants. They know there is the demand for the flamingos, having already talked to restauranteurs in Cambridge and Hamilton and are now looking for a site with access to power and water in Raglan to locate four 20ft containers needed to increase production. They would love to hear from locals who might have land on which they could set up the business. For more information about Champignons contact Niels at niels. kolmer@gmail.com. Janine Jackson

Tarot Talk

H

ello again from Tarot Talk - a weekly column in which I introduce a Tarot card for the week and provide a little information about it. I hope you continue to enjoy this space.

In this card we see a figure shrouded in black, for mourning, who is contemplating three overturned cups. A river flows past (perhaps representing the river of life itself or the "river of tears" which can accompany grief and loss. Sorrow, disappointment and regrets are indicated by this card. It can show the sadness and confusion that follows the loss of someone dear or which surrounds us when we need to move on from a family situation, relationship, job that no longer serves us. We can feel lost and confused and mourn for that which has been lost. However, we should not lose ourselves in that grief but rather try to focus on what remains - not what has been lost. There are still two upright cups and these can represent the support of friends, family and colleagues who will help us move on when we are ready. They can also show us that not all has been lost and we need to turn our focus to that which remains. Whilst it is important to acknowledge the grief we feel there is no benefit in crying over "split milk" and regrets are a waste of time and energy. This card can indicate that it is now time to pick up the pieces and move on. There is a bridge to the future, shown in the card - we cannot change past events, we must at some stage find a way forward. More information about this card can be found on my Tarot Talk Facebook page https:// www.facebook.com/tarottalknz/ Tarot readings and tuition are available by appointment. Hulking Chiefs prop has happy memories of his Raglan youth

Angus, left, pictured with Chiefs teammate Toni Pulu.

G

iant prop Angus Ta’avao may be chuffed to have resurrected his Super Rugby career at the Chiefs this season but he’s thrilled too to be based so close to the town he once called home – Raglan. The 124kg (near 20 stone} 28 year old lived in Raglan on and off from the age of about 10 through until 17-ish, and says he has “all good memories” of his time here. So much so that Angus – who was thrown a lifeline by Chiefs coach Colin Cooper after failing to pick up a Super Rugby contract either side of the Tasman for 2018 – recently took a nostalgic trip down memory lane, or Long Street to be exact, with his partner Kristyn Bradfield. She’d visited Raglan just the once previously, when playing in Hamilton with her water polo team as a 14 year old. “I took her out there (to Raglan) a few weeks ago and drove around showing her a few different places I lived,” Angus told the Chronicle last weekend. He recalls living with his mother, Wendy McGee, in Long Street and thereabouts.

“Yes, I one hundred percent remember Raglan,” he says from the home in Whitiora, just a stone’s throw from Waikato Stadium, that he has for the Super Rugby season. Angus did only one full year – as a Year 7 pupil – at Raglan Area School, but that was long enough for him to make quite an impression. Principal Malcolm Cox recalls he was “a very big lad, very gentle and a gifted player … he had a talent even then”. Veteran local junior rugby coach Johnny Brown remembers Angus for a different reason: “He was such a big boy for his age I had to go to the senior rugby team to get a jersey for him.” Says Angus of his early Raglan rugby days: “I’m pretty sure I wore black and green, it was such a long time ago.” From 2002 to 2007 Angus went to Dilworth, a private boarding school in Epsom, Auckland. But he says that every holiday, long weekend or when school finished for the term or year he was catching a bus for Hamilton so he could join his mother in Raglan. He remembers jumping off the Kopua footbridge into the estuary and also a holiday job at the then Four Square in Bow

Street over a couple of years as a teen. “I was working as a stock boy, doing lifting out the back.” Angus says he’s been meaning for a while to bring his baby son Leo, who has a genetic disease, out to Raglan and show him the beach. The beach was a big part of his life here. Though he never surfed, he and his mum used to run the beach and swim. “It was a good training ground … especially the run up to the carpark (from Ngarunui).” Angus wasn’t too fussed about Hamilton as a youth but now sees its centrality giving him “the best of both worlds”, with family in Auckland and the beach nearby in Raglan. When he joined the Chiefs early this year it was only to cover the absence of All Blacks in the pre-season, but after a spate of injuries to teammates he’s now become a key component of the Chiefs pack and his contract has been extended to the end of the season. Angus is no newcomer to Super Rugby. He played for the Blues between 2012 and 2015, then linked up with the Waratahs in NSW on a two-year deal. He also played for Taranaki in last year’s Mitre 10 Cup competition, captaining them when they took the prized Log o’ Wood – the Ranfurly Shield – off rugby powerhouses Canterbury. Edith Symes

Is your bunny safe? W hile we remember to consider the vaccination needs of our dogs and cats, we often forget that our rabbits also have these requirements in order to remain in good health and be devoid of unnecessary disease.

rade Aid Whaingaroa Raglan celebrates World Fair Trade Day on Saturday May 12 from 9am5pm with a global feast and the addition of some local flavour.

“Raglan customers are really switched on when it comes to fair trade and our food products sell particularly well. We look forward to sharing some of our favourite recipes with customers and talking about what fair trade means to us.” Head to the Trade Aid store in Bow Street to taste some of the recipes made by Donna and the volunteers using Trade Aid fair trade food products, including Trade Aid’s take on ginger crunch and other tasty delights. 20x3 Janine (11cmJackson wide)

This year store manager Donna McGough is offering a sample of dishes created with a selection of delicious fair trade, organic and artisan-created food products sold in the shop, including a taste testing of Trade Aid olive oil and Ruapuke Artisan Bread. The connection between TradeChronicle Aid and the Raglan tiniest bread shop in the Waikato goes back around 19958/RC five years when Jenny Location: Ham & Chartwell Carter approached former Trade Aid manager Lisa Thomson to use the front section of the store’s storage corridor. “Trade Aid supports Jenny by giving her the space to sell her delicious bread. It works for Trade Aid and Ruapuke Bread we support a local artisan and she helps us out as well. We definitely benefit from Jenny’s customers who make the most of buying their favourite sour dough and then popping in to purchase something here,” Donna says. The global fair trade movement is fundamental to Trade Aid, but so is the relationship the organisation has with the local community, Donna says. “We want to celebrate the amazing fair trade food products we sell in the shop and Jenny’s bread is the perfect accompaniment to our extra virgin olive oil which is sourced from importers in Palestine who focus on enhancing the farmers’ social and economic situations.” The #LiveFair theme for World Fair Trade Day www.patersonburn.co.nz is a call to increase support for fair consumption Call now for an appointment and, Donna says, a 07 839 3072 – 387 Anglesea Street, Hamilton growing number of New 07 855 7872 – Lynden Court, Chartwell Zealanders are realising their consumption has an impact on the people who make the products Trade Aid buys. *Terms and conditions apply.

Calicivirus is a nasty viral infection that is highly contagious and fatal. The virus is easily spread between rabbits and affects wild rabbits as well as pets. Calicivirus essentially causes the rabbit to ‘bleed out’ and therefore is extremely hard (near impossible) to manage once a rabbit has contracted the disease. The best ‘cure’ is prevention through vaccination. The council of Canterbury has recently released information regarding a plan (now approved) to release a new strain of Calicivirus within the wild rabbit population, with the goal of largely reducing the wild population on farms and working towards pest eradication for farmers. A new strain was approved for release as wild rabbits have built up natural resistance to the current strain. Even though it is being released in the South Island, our pet rabbits will also be at risk of disease due to its ability to spread and kill quickly. What can I do at home to reduce the chance of my bunny contracting this disease?

• Book your rabbit in at your local clinic to be vaccinated • Control insects (especially flies and fleas) both indoors and out. The virus is spread largely by flies • Remove any uneaten food on a daily basis • Keep pet rabbits indoors as much as possible • Rabbit-proof your backyard to prevent access by wild rabbits (and prevent your bunny wandering and making friends) • Regularly decontaminate equipment and materials (cages, bowls etc.) with either 10% bleach or 10% sodium hydroxide. A 10-minute contact time is required before rinsing • Avoid feeding grass that may be contaminated by wild rabbits If you own a rabbit, or are considering adopting one, it is important you speak to your local veterinary clinic to discuss vaccinations against this deadly virus. It is our responsibility as their owners to make sure we are doing all we can to keep them safe and healthy. For more information on keeping your bunny safe and healthy, please speak to a nurse at your local Anexa FVC clinic. The Anexa Team

Don’t Feed Your Pet Junk Food!

Not all foods are created equal so make sure your pet gets the best diet possible! As vets we cannot emphasise enough the importance of good nutrition for your pet, to ensure good health. Diets need to be tailored to the specific needs of your pet to ensure they lead a healthy life. There are many reasons why you should consider feeding your pet with pet food purchased from your vet. Advice: Your pet’s dietary needs may change as they grow and age. Your vet/ vet nurse can offer advice on the best nutrition for all life stages of your pet. Range: Vet-Only pet food offers a wide range of special diets, such as oral care, weight loss and hairball control. Tailor-made: Large-breed dogs have different nutritional needs than smaller dogs and therefore need different diet formulations. Breed specific foods are formulated to help control or prevent some of the typical health problems of each breed. Your vet also has access to prescription diets designed for specific health conditions. Much less mess to clean up: Quality food is highly digestible – therefore less mess and smell when your pet goes to the toilet. Weight management: Obesity is the most common form of malnutrition in the pets of today. Feeding pets an appropriate quantity of food is very important. High quality food tends to make the animal feel full and satisfied with a smaller quantity.

Hot deal:

Dental health: Dental problems are the second most common health problem that we see in our patients. Vet-Only pet foods have special features to help keep your pet’s mouth healthy.

May promotion:

Taste: Your pets will love it! Vet-Only diets have a high acceptance rate among pets. But for extra reassurance all our foods are 100% guaranteed. If your pet doesn’t like it we will refund the purchase price.

Te Radar announced as MC for Waipa Awards

T

he 2018 Waipa Networks Business Awards (the Awards) have announced this week that Te Radar will be the MC at their annual Gala dinner to be held at the Mystery Creek Events Centre on the 31st August.

The Gala dinner is the culmination of the Awards process, where all winners are announced – the event is the highlight in the Waipa and Raglan business calendar. Te Radar is best known for his various New Zealand TV documentaries and is a satirist on Radio NZ. He’s won Film and Television Awards for three of his top rating TVNZ documentary series. He’s also won two Qantas Media awards for his NZ Herald columns and is the recipient of the country’s highest comedy accolades. Te Radar commented, “I love awards nights, and I particularly love awards nights that recognise local people for excelling in their business and communities. It gives us a rare chance to celebrate them and the regions we live in, and to remind ourselves

that there’s a lot of fantastic people out there who are making a real difference.” The Gala dinner is becoming the event to attend, and as well as Te Radar, this year’s event promises a three-course meal, goodie bag, the chance to win some great spot prizes and the opportunity to dance the night away to a fantastic live band - to be announced soon. Tania Witheford of the Cambridge Chamber of Commerce, says, “We are looking forward to welcoming back Te Radar as MC for the Waipa Networks 2018 Business Awards Gala Dinner. Te Radar is a popular choice in the region and was a hit at the 2015 Awards. Te Radar’s unique brand and style as an MC, combined with his fantastic humour and comedic prowess, is the perfect choice to celebrate business success in 2018.” The event is on August 31 at Mystery Creek Events Centre and tickets are available for purchase now via the website – www.waipabusinessawards.co.nz .

H

ometown hero Luke Cederman blasted his way through five rounds of surfing at Raglan today (Sunday April 29) to win his first ever national event – the Backdoor Oceanbridge Manu Bay Pro.

The day dawned with barely a wave on the point at Manu Bay but by the time competition got underway, the swell began to pulse until it reached a peak in excess of 1.5m in the afternoon with strong offshore winds from the northeast direction. Cederman won the low scoring final with a 10.67 point heat total which was not representative of his dominant performances throughout the day. “Five heats, I am bloody exhausted right now” Cederman said. “It is my first win ever, I have never made a final out here even [though], I have come close a couple of times so it’s nice to finally win one I guess.” Cederman took the win like he takes most of his surfing, with an ease and nonchalant approach

that seems to have finally worked. “Yeah well I have never really cared too much for competitive surfing although I have dabbled in it quite a bit, but yeah with no real pressure it is nice to come out here, get a few waves and do a few turns. Now I am pumped for next weekend, with back-to-back comps it would be nice to get on a roll.” Cederman defeated Mount Maunganui surfer Matt Hewitt in the final, Hewitt finishing second with a score of 9.80 points. Hewitt led toward the end of the final before Cederman took the title. Dune Kennings (Piha) finished third to secure his best result in several years while Billy Stairmand (Rag) finished in fourth place. Earlier in the day Stairmand and Kennings defeated Alex Dive (Mnt) and Chris Malone (Rag) in the first semifinal. Cederman and Hewitt defeated Sid West (Grt Barrier) and Callum Chuter (Mnt) in the second semifinal. Surfing New Zealand
