The clean up crew has been steadily chipping away at picking up the enormous amount of roadside rubbish around Raglan.

R

oadside dumping in Whaingaroa has got volunteers out on the weekend walking the state highway in an effort to keep Raglan clean.

Over a period of several weeks the crew have walked 14km of SH23, put in around 12-hours of walking, collected over 500kgs of rubbish and five large barrels of recycling. Organised by locals Lee Knight, Mike Clarkson and Jake Fyalka, the men had initially taken action themselves and Lee says they quickly realised they needed more help. Both Mike and Lee have been picking up rubbish at various dumping sites around Karioi since November last year. “We both noticed the sheer volume of rubbish, and the state highway was getting worse through the summer months and that’s when Jake came on board,” Lee says. Some of the rubbish is accidental but most is either thrown from vehicles or illegally dumped and the men have even dealt with human faeces from freedom campers around the coast.

“It’s very evident that contractors are not picking up litter and are just mowing it up into smaller pieces along the sides of the road.” With around 25,000 vehicles on SH23 over the summer months, Lee says the job they have undertaken will be ongoing and already he’s seen cans littering parts of the road they have cleared in the past few weeks. “I don’t want to just be sitting there saying this is filthy, this is disgusting. I want to just get in and get my hands dirty and get the job done,” Lee says. The group are determined to keep going and have set their sights on making it to the bottom of the divvy this Sunday, and eventually get to the top of the divvy and then tackle Te Mata Road as far as Te Papatapu Rd. “We want to make a big dent in it and then monitor it. It would be nice to just go once a month but come summer the rubbish is just going to be crazy again.” Volunteers are welcome to join the crew and can make contact via their Facebook page – Raglan clean up crew. Lee is a trained Site Management Traffic Supervisor and the volunteers are briefed

about safety. Thanks to Raglan Roast in Te Uku for the free coffees and to Xtreme Zero Waste for free dumping. The next mission is this Sunday, July 8 at 11am, meet at the Te Uku School car park. Janine Jackson

Tarot Talk Hello again from Tarot Talk - a weekly column in which I introduce a Tarot card for the week and provide a little information about it. I hope you continue to enjoy this space. Txt Chrissy on 027 6644261.

T

his week's card is the Knight of Cups. This guy is an idealist, the dreamer; the Knight in search of the Holy Grail.

The things that we wish hardest for, invest most energy into, manifest in our lives. This is why it is crucial to be vigilant and watchful about the way we’re thinking and feeling. If we sink into feeling negative, we often introduce even more negativity into our lives. When we want something strongly enough, our positive energy will find that thing manifesting for us. Explore your dreams and wishes and propel them into everyday life. All we have to do is wish hard enough. The energy of the Knight of Cups will help you to achieve your aims. So spend a little time visualising your goal - then gather all your strong feelings up into a bundle and push them out into the Universe! The Knight of Cups encourages us to follow our dreams. This card can also indicate that an invitation, job offer or proposal is possible. You may fall in love with a person or with an ideal. More information about this card can be found on my Tarot Talk Facebook page https:// www.facebook.com/tarottalknz/ Tarot readings and tuition are available by appointment. Hayley Willers at work in the new collaborative space in Raglan, The HQ, which is located above Bizworx on Wallis Street.

ou may have heard the term ‘coworking’ thrown about Y over the past few years as a way

to describe situations where individuals (whether working for themselves or a company) will come together in a shared space to work on their own projects. Hayley Willers, co-chair of the Raglan Chamber of Commerce and fulltime property lawyer, has recently set up The HQ in Raglan, a coworking space especially for Raglan residents. The Chronicle caught up with Hayley, also a mother of two young girls, to chat about what the new space is all about. What is the HQ – Raglan Co Lab about? What services does it offer? How we work today is changing. Advances in technology allow us to communicate, share files, hold meetings, make transactions, market ourselves and perform countless other tasks instantly and seamlessly. It also means we can work from almost anywhere as long as we have a good internet connection. Employers are beginning to identify this trend and see it as an opportunity to hire the best talent around; talent not always available locally. The term 'remote working' has been coined to describe this new approach as it allows the co-worker the opportunity to live in a more attractive, more convenient or more affordable place. So more and more of us are choosing to go it alone and run our business or do our work from our preferred location. But often we end up working from

bedrooms, kitchens or cafes. Working like this presents its own set of problems. Distractions, isolation, a lack of structure or lack of accountability are just some and they can make our new remote working life hard. The HQ will allow us to get the most out of our working day and be motivated by others in a similar position. It will give us the ultimate work-life balance and more time during the day by cutting out the daily commute. The HQ is a place for professional, creative and social entrepreneurs in Raglan. It offers a collaborative and social environment that shares resources and ideas. It enables the creative environment to meet the professional environment and collaborate together to the benefit of all involved. What benefits does coworking offer in terms of creativity, productivity etc? 1)Expand your personal and business networks with fun and ease 2) Work more productively by surrounding yourself with others hard at work 3) Decrease your feeling of isolation as a freelancer/small business owner 4) Increased sense of community and trust amongst peers 5) Reduce the amount of common office overheads like broadband and printer costs 6) Create new opportunities to collaborate on projects too large for your own business 7) Work at a high quality office or location otherwise beyond your budget

8) More mobility and not having to be chained to long leases 9) Absorb new ideas from other industries not usually within your network Top three reasons why you are enjoying having the HQ 1. It’s local...I have the potential to save myself two hours every day and either give that time to myself, my girls or my work. 2. With the increasing cost of petrol I am saving money and helping the environment. The cost of membership is less than the cost of my commute and we all know it’s better to have less cars on the road! 3. It’s social and is great networking! It has giving me the opportunity to meet and work with new people. Was there a particular existing space that you were inspired by? There are so many amazing co-working spaces around New Zealand, but one that inspired me was the Meraki Workspace in Cambridge. Why did you decide to set this space up in Raglan? After having numerous conversations with people about a shared working space in Raglan I realized that there was an opportunity in Raglan for a space and then following my visit to the Meraki Workspace in Cambridge I realized how amazing it would be to have something similar in Raglan. The concept of co-working being centered around shared values, community, openness, collaboration, accessibility and sustainability I think has a nice fit with Raglan.

andra Jonas doesn’t have to look far for an example of how much the Sproduce co-op she got up and running locally two months ago is already helping Raglan district families.

The Te Mata mother of four who’s taken time off teaching since four-month-old Freia arrived reckons that thanks to Foodtogether – as the national co-op is called – she can now afford to be “generous” with her own family’s supply of fruit and vegetables. Sandra says she’s also been busy recipe-hunting so as not to waste the leftovers from her weekly whanau box, which feeds a household of seven including au pair Soraja Atzerodt who helps out with the initiative. “Now fruit and veggies are not a precious commodity (at home),” Sandra told the Chronicle from the local foodbank building on Bow Street, where Foodtogether boxes are distributed each Wednesday afternoon. She likes that she doesn’t have to limit for instance the fruit her children – ranging in age from babyhood through to teens – can eat every day. Sandra reckons her regular $36.50 whanau fiesta box was filled with close to 20kg of produce recently. “That’s amazing … $1.50 per kilo,” she calculates. The amount varies, though. “Sometimes there’s more bulky stuff, other times more gourmet (depending on seasonal availability),” she points out. Besides the whanau box there are two smaller boxes of produce to choose from: a gourmet box for families of three or four at $26.50 and a value box of basics for one or two at $15. The produce is trucked directly to Raglan from Hamilton’s wholesale markets, Sandra explains. “It’s super-fresh and of really good quality.”

Megan Clemance

Shane Massey

Grown mainly in the Waikato, it has a low ecological footprint and there’s minimal plastic wrapping. It’s delivered on Wednesday mornings to the foodbank building where volunteer Trevor Edgeworth, who lives nearby, unloads the truck of its crates. Sandra and a “handful” of helpers – including Soraja, Alex Crane and Nic Wiley – arrive later in the day and set up a production line of sorts to box the produce, which has been pre-ordered from the Foodtogether website. Co-op members then collect their orders, which in total range from 20 to 30 boxloads weekly. The boxes are recycled from week to week. The Raglan hub has gained momentum quite quickly, says Sandra, with about 200 members joining its Facebook page in the past few weeks. Many have their own vegetable gardens but, like Sandra, need more produce and more variety than they can supply themselves. Foodtogether’s a great initiative that works by cutting out the middle person and running on volunteers, she says. “I (for instance) just have to invest my Wednesday afternoon to help make it work.” The national co-op “exploded” in Canterbury after the Christchurch earthquakes, she adds, and continues to grow in communities around the country. Sandra says the initiative is well summed up in the local Foodtogether Facebook page ethos: “We’re a non-profit social enterprise made up of people right here in Raglan that has the goal of making seasonal fresh fruit and veg accessible to everyone.” Edith Symes

While the stress response has its purpose and can be useful, the prolonged secretion of stress hormones can become damaging to the body by creating acidity and inflammation. This can contribute to many health problems including leaky gut, or the atrophy of the stress and memory glands, which means they start to shrink! You may be familiar with ginseng herbs. These are the most commonly known adaptogens. There are many to choose from, and they all provide varying actions, so you can get one that is just right for you. For instance, Siberian ginseng, is generally considered a male tonic, is stimulating and is a lung tonic, while Withania/Ashwaganda (Indian ginseng), is more feminine, and has anti-anxiety and anti-anaemic actions. Panax ginseng is very powerful and helps to prevent insomnia and cancer. There are also many other adaptogenic herbs besides the ginsengs, such as Schisandra, which is an antidepressant and a liver detoxifyer, Gotu kola which is anxiolytic and breaks down unwanted scar tissue, and Gynostemma, which is similar to Panax, but is also blood sugar balancing, therefore helping you to avoid eating junk food. RAGLAN JUNIOR SOCCER RESULTS // 30 JUNE

Team

They’re the first girls’ team at high school age in Raglan and as luck would have it they’re also the first team to stick together through the transition from the junior club to high school soccer –

Netball M

luckily there was a 9-aside competition available this year. These players led the surge in girls’ soccer in Whaingaroa. They originated as the 7th grade Dolphins in 2012 - Raglan’s first ever girls’ team. They had a lot of fun together and the word spread quickly with girls of all ages enjoying now enjoying the game in Raglan.

- Karioi Rangitahi Coach Angela Massey

y name is Angela Massey and I am the Manager for Karioi Rangatahi.

This team ranges in age from Year 9 to 13 girls and is our only Raglan Club team playing in the Saturday Secondary School Division. We have had a great start to the season and have been stretched by some of the teams we have come up against. We struggle to get a full team on the court some weeks particularly as our girls are also committed to other sports such as Waka Ama. Many of these players have played together for a number of years so we can build on past experiences and then be ready to welcome new members to our team. We struggled at the beginning of the season to get enough Raglan players to form a team and with only nine girls registered we often have to play with no substitutes. So, we continue to work on match fitness and we are therefore incredibly grateful to Honey Armstrong's Twilight team for giving us a game on our Thursday training nights. We are already seeing positive spinoffs from this extra practise against your awesome team. Thanks Honey and friends. As Manager it is just a matter of co-

My right hand girl, Monique Chaplin (Mogz), supports me in her role as team coach and we are very thankful to Sonya Drysdale for her warm up sessions on Thursday training nights. Also, to the mums and dads who support on the side-line at training or Saturday games, we thank you very much. I thank Missy and the rest of the netball committee for all the hard work they do behind the scenes and all the support they offer the teams. Here's to continuing our great run and finishing the season on a high. It will be sad to lose some of our senior players at the end of the season as they will be finishing high school and leaving for adventures new, but we are thrilled to see the talent already shining in our Year 7 to 8 teams and look forward to welcoming these players next year to our Secondary team. I have been involved as a manager over the last six years or so starting out when my daughter played for a Year 4 team at Raglan Area School, so I feel very blessed to have watched these girls grow and mature into the awesome netball players that they are today.

ocal eatery The Shack is celebrating local produce and Māori culture with chef Te Iri Tokitoki (Iri) Ritchie’s entry in to the Matariki Dish Challenge 2018. Iri’s dish, a mushroom broth with black barley topped with micro greens and coriander, uses local Prinz pickled oyster mushrooms, New Zealand seaweed karengo and kawakawa foraged from Karioi. “The dish uses a stock similar to one we used to use at The Shack, but I made it a lot more mushroom based,” he says. The competition sets Waikato chefs the challenge of creating a dish using native, local ingredients, inspired by Matariki, the Māori New year, during the alignment of the Matariki star cluster - the Pleiades or Seven Sisters. In its fourth year, the competition is run annually in mid-winter by culinary promotion group Waikato Food Inc with 25 entries from restaurants and cafes across the region taking up the challenge this year. The Shack is entered in the café section and judges do the rounds of the various eateries across the Waikato incognito.

The secret judging doesn’t faze Iri whose focus has always been on sending out the best food he can every time. And he’s pleased with how the dish has been received by diners so far. “It’s selling much more than I expected.” The 21-year-old started his career as a dishwasher in Wellington nearly four years ago and worked at Orca for two years as a dishie/trainee chef before taking on the cooking challenge at The Shack. He abandoned an academic career in favour of following a culinary calling – Iri’s grandparents are well-known local academics Jane and her late husband James Ritchie, who founded Waikato University's Centre for Māori Studies and Research in the early 1970s. “I had just come out of high school and thinking of going to uni, but it wasn’t really what I wanted to do.” The Matariki Dish Challenge runs until July 14. Check out matarikidishchallenge. co.nz for competing restaurants and cafés. The Matariki awards dinner is on July 30 at the University of Waikato Performing Arts Centre.

SUPPORT OUR SUPPORTERS! The businesses and individuals advertising in the Raglan Chronicle are participating not only to promote their businesses, but to show their support for our community paper – so be sure to tell them you saw them in the Raglan Chronicle. Local businesses are the foundation of our community - and they make it possible for us to bring the Raglan Chronicle to you.

Maramataka Māori

When Matariki rises and when it is celebrated should be predicted using the maramataka Māori, or the Māori lunar calendar, which refers to the moon phases rather than the solar, more common, Gregorian calendar.

Pōhutukawa

Ngā Mata o te Ariki – The Eyes of the God

The maramataka Māori comprises of twelve 29.5 day months and a 354-day year. The Gregorian calendar, which is based on the number of times the Earth orbits the sun, has 365 day years.

Commonly referred to as the Māori new year, according to Dr Matamua, it is a common misconception that ʻMatariki’ means ʻlittle eyes’; there are no stories to support this translation. Matariki is actually an abbreviation of ʻNgā Mata o te Ariki’ – The Eyes of the God. The god referred to is Tāwhirimātea, god of the winds and weather. When Ranginui, the sky father, and Papatūānuku, the earth mother, were separated from their dark embrace by Tāne, Tāwhirimātea was distraught. He tore out his eyes, crushed them into pieces and stuck them onto the chest of the sky. This is why Tāwhirimātea is the blind god, feeling his way around the sky and bringing winds from different directions.

Nine Stars of Matariki

Dr Rangi Matamua acknowledges that differing traditions exist throughout Aotearoa in relation to Matariki. This perspective comes from Dr Rangi Matamua’s research over the years as well as information passed down from his ancestors. He spoke about his ancestors who had reputations as witch doctors and astronomers and were interviewed by ethnographer Elsdon Best for his book The Astronomical Knowledge of the Māori (1922). To date, this book is still the most comprehensive record of Māori star lore, but Matamua’s ancestors are not acknowledged for their contribution of 90% of that knowledge due to their status as witch doctors. This led to Dr Matamua’s ancestors spending 30 years authoring their own book of 400 pages and 1000 Māori star names. Dr Matamua’s grandfather held on to the manuscript for 40 years without opening it and, before he died, he entrusted Dr Matamua with sharing the knowledge but protecting the book, saying:

The best time to observe Matariki is during the new phase of the moon, referred to as Tangaroa, the moon of plenty. This year that occurs between 6-13 July.

Matariki (Alcyone) – the mother of the other stars in the constellation. Rehua (Antares) is the father but is not considered part of the Matariki constellation.

Pōhutukawa – connects Matariki to the dead and is the star that carries our dead across the year (Sterope/Asterope)

Tupuānuku – is tied to food that grows in the ground (Pleione).

Tupuārangi – is tied to food that comes from above your head such as birds and fruit (Atlas).

Waitī – is tied to food that comes from fresh water (Maia).

Waitā– is tied to food that comes from salt water (Taygeta).

Ururangi – is tied to the winds (Merope).

Hiwaiterangi/H iwa – is the youngest star in the cluster, the star you send your wishes to (Celaeno).

ʻKnowledge that isn’t shared isn’t knowledge.’ According to Dr Rangi Matamua there are nine stars in the constellation of Matariki, rather than seven. They all hold dominion over particular areas of our environment as seen from a Māori worldview. There are also nine stars in the Greek tradition of the constellation Pleiades (Matariki).

Waipunarangi – is tied to the rain (Electra).

Lost Tribe Aotearoa get big break with Mai Fm

W

inning Mai FM’s Big Break competition is another step in Lost Tribe Aotearoa’s journey to fame and fortune. The band won a free photo shoot, air play and a dub remix of their first single ‘Irie’ by hip hop artist Sir T. Lost Tribe Aotearoa is comprised of bassist Vince David, drummer Boyd Dixon, singer and rhythm guitarist Tux Severne, lead singer Jesse Biddle, lead guitarist/singer Ben Aves and keyboardist/back-up vocals Lisa McLeod. Tux entered the band in the Mai FM competition and knew ‘Irie’ was the perfect single to showcase the band. “’Irie’ is the first song we all made up as Lost Tribe,” he says. The exposure they have had since the win is priceless, with friends from as far away as Wellington saying they heard the song on Mai FM. “It’s good to get our songs out on the radio,” Tux says. Conceived in Raglan at the end of 2017, the band has members who hail from all over the North Island and credit small-town life with bringing them together. They all have connections in one way or another and the haphazard way they came together seems to have paid off in the little time they have been playing. “I’ve been singing with Ben since we were little kids, but we’ve never lived in the same town. I invited him up for a jam,” Tux says. Tux then approached Vince to play bass with them and he was thrown in the deep end from the get-go. “He told me to come for a jam and it was actually a gig at Blind Tiger. We did the gig and it was good,” Vince says. Jesse, a cousin from Turangi, was hanging out during a band practice and they invited him to sing and knew straight away he was

Lost Tribe Aotearoa.

the lead singer they had been waiting for. They played their first ‘real’ gig together at the Yot Club, opening for Cornerstone Roots. Boyd was just filling in for their original drummer at the time. Cornerstone Roots liked what they heard, but felt the band needed a keyboardist before heading into a recording studio. Boyd invited Lisa who he had played with back in the early days of Cornerstone Roots to bring her keyboard talents to the band. “We all clicked pretty good together,” Boyd says.

With only Vince, Boyd and Tux living in Raglan, band practice often happens just before a gig. Sometimes it’s the morning before. Lisa, a music teacher at Taipa Area School in the Far North, has the most difficulty making practice, but Boyd says the classically trained musician very quickly picks up on what they are doing. Once Lisa was on board, Cornerstone Roots connected them with Neil Finn’s Roundhead Studios and they recorded their first four-4 track EP, which included ‘Irie’

and the soon to be released single, ‘Badman’. “We are really grateful to Cornerstone Roots and to the Whaingaroa community for supporting us on our journey,” Vince says. ‘Irie’ is available on Spotify and ‘Badman’ will be available on Spotify soon – Lost Tribe Aotearoa CDs and t-shirts are also available for sale at Raglan Tattoo on Wainui Road. Lost Tribe Aotearoa are about to embark on a tour with Cornerstone Roots. kicking off at the YOT Club this Friday, July 6. Janine Jackson

Ross Thornton Jones, along with Ro Fawcett Smith, will be holding a contemporary art exhibition this month at the Old School Arts centre.

ontemporary Art is often a challenge for viewers but is designed to be just that, sometimes provoking controversy and discussion.

People can enjoy the colour, movement and composition while trying to unravel the intentions of the artist. The title of a work gives a clue to deciphering any message which might be confronting but demands an opinion and hopefully some appreciation from the browser. Ross Thornton Jones began his journey into painting after an accident which forced him to take a new track. When fully recovered, he found his art to be addictive and now produces large wildly imaginative paintings at every spare moment, when not out surfing or at work.

Retiree Ro Fawcett Smith has been painting colourful landscapes for 30 years but has harboured a secret desire to get outside the box. 12 RAGLAN Chronicle By using unconventional techniques and masses of paint and colour she presents an entirely new body of works. From both ends of the age spectrum these two Raglan artists have combined their take on modern art, as they see it. Throwing caution aside, they present a collection of paintings that have imagination in bucket loads. They hope that Raglan art lovers and visitors will enjoy the challenge and view this very different exhibition at the Old School Art Gallery, open week days and weekends 10am to 3pm until July 26.
